For my Studio 3 project we were to design a mausoleum for the American Philosophical Society. My design was conceived from the idea of erasing the largeness of the site and project criteria by finding strength in personal moments.

The design of the APS museums were an extension of the mausoleums form. Each building holds a specific function, and each box within the building holds to a specific exhibit. The concept was to have the exhibits float within a structure mainly of glass.

The site and project were one big landscape, and through manipulation, that idea was erased and a blur between landscape and construct was developed. In the creation of the big arc, smaller spaces and events were exposed in the large structure. This is where people can find their personal place and moment for reflextion. Multiple spaces are available with the redefining of a central mausoleum as a path, rather than a singular plaza. The landscaped environment along the path also offered an invitation of space with the placement of trees and changes in topography.

SITE AND MAUSOLEUM MODEL

SITE PLAN

INITIAL SKETCHES The site, at the Airforce base in Colorado Springs, consists of a large open field with sloping topography surrounded by the interstate to the East and a tree covered creek path to the West. The space in-between was uninhabited and open, with no place to feel close or connected to anything. By generating a place holder for people to inhabit, it creates a comfortable environment where one could find ownership and boundaries in their own space. There is also strength in how the site would be viewed from above. It cuts through the landscape significantly.

DIGITAL FABRICATION - WOODEN HAMMOCK

For my digital fabrication project I worked in a group with Kenneth Kottwitz and Garrett Vaughn. We decided upon creating a wooden hammock based off the form from the undulated surface of a surf board. The initial shape was then contoured using a Grasshopper script, through the program Rhino. We produced a unique form for every wood rib constructed.

By using spheres as separators for the ribs, the hammock can bend when the weight of a human body is placed upon it. This allows the hammock to contour to the curvature of the spine without each gap pinching inwards, and the ribs provide stability.

ORIGINAL SHAPE

WIREFRAME

MODELED CONTOURS

The idea of a wooden hammock sounds uncomfortable and unusable. This was the challege we brought upon ourselves to discredit. We had to combine comfort with structure and performance in order to create something more than just an artistic piece.

CUT SHEETS AND PROFILING MODEL The wooden ribs we formed were then built by laminating together layers of cabinet grade plywood and cutting them out with the CNC (computer numberical control machine). The ribs were cut in three board peices and the head peices were each cut from a large block of laminated wood.

The design and documentation of this project was a collaboration with SA+R Architects and Davis Partnership Architects. The interior design team consisted of Cynthia Steinbrecher (Associate) and myself. All design decisions were made in close collaboration with Holland Development to reach the final renderings shown. My responsibilities on the project included Client/Developer/ Engineer/Architect/Interior OAC meetings, investor presentations, finish selection and documentation, value engineering studies, all Revit construction coordination, detailing and documentation and furniture and art studies.

COMMUNITY ROOM AND POOL DECK RENDERING

The initial design concept was derived from the idea of Natural Luxery, inspired by the rugged natural terrain of the northern west coast. A highend clientel led us to design with timeless base materials. Textured stones, warm woods and crisp, nuetral tile and paints. Bright color was added in furniture and fabric to incorporate current trends. MASTER FINISH BOARD

ELEVATOR LOBBY CONCEPT 2

This concept is derived from the weather worn but texturally rich landscape of Colorado. Both the built and un-built environment of our state inspire the repetitive yet organic forms of the space. Soft warm tones are offset by rich, bright and unexpected hues.

CONCEPT BOARD

Located in Lakewood, Colorado, the Belmar area is developing into a new urbanized neighborhood. The Davis Partnership team designed a two block development complete with a 3 story single-stacked, with attached garage, condo community, and a 4 story Texan wrap apartment complex. The project architect was Fred Pax (Associate) and David Daniel (Associate Partner). The interiors was led by myself and overseen by Cynthia Steinbrecher (Associate). My responsibilities included all phases of design from schematic through construction documents. Close coordination on unit and kitchen layouts were developed with Holland Development. Electrical layouts and lighting selection, value engineering studies and final detailing and documentation were also complete.

LEASING LOBBY RENDERING

The mixed clientel base led me to design with timeless materials and a warmer color palette. Lighting and art added a playfulness to the overall design. Design features of importance to Holland Development included transparency but privacy between spaces, large sliding glass doors into the leasing office, double-sided fireplace, multi-purpose community kitchen and gathering space, and multi-use conference room. Everything needed to feel high-end but with a very tight budget.

UNIT LAYOUT 1

UNIT LAYOUT 2

Between both blocks there was a total of 22 different unit layouts. All units were studied per code requirements and kitchen layouts were modeled and rendered in SketchUp to review in detail with the development team. With the SketchUp models we were able to walk through the units and push and pull questionable items to show exactly what they were looking for before documentation.

STUDENT LOCKER ROOM LOUNGE RENDERING

With a strong alumni design team from Davis Partnership, and with sports coordination from Cannon Design, a LEED Platinum college athletic facility was put forth. Currently under construction the center consists of renovation of the existing rec center with a large addition. Different sports areas were created with weight and cardio equipment intermingled, creating more intimate zones and many different dedicated sport centers. The design concept focused on organic forms, modern elements, and warm tones, all relating to the lifestyle Boulder embodies. The interior design team consisted of Jennifer Henry (Senior Designer) and myself. My responsibilities included initial design presentations, finish selection and documentation, and construction administration primary interior contact. STUDENT LOCKER ROOM LOUNGE AERIAL VIEW

E-Source is an energy consulting company that out grew their original office space and wanted to move and expand into a new building. They sought for a design that was fun, energized and “Google-design oriented”, but for a low budget. Cynthia Steinbrecher (Associate) and myself worked in close collaboration with the uses to create a space specific to their needs. The design also included building energy efficiency upgrades per Boulder’s standards; adding light tubes through the two story space to brighten the main level workspace. My responsibilities on the project included all phases of design and documentation, pricing studies, as well as construction administration and site visits, and custom furniture ordering.

The new and fastly growing technology based company was looking for a “Googleinspired work place with a Boulder, Colorado inspiration. The building, which would be shared with my project E-Source, was brought through initial layout decussions and beginning design communication. We developed a board (as shown on this spread) that communicated the basic design ideas, materials and application they would like to have in their workplace. This was sent to Hyder Construction for preliminary pricing for future construction.

ROOF DECK RENDERING

Bancroft Development was looking to study the potential of an outdoor work place on the un-used deck spce of an older building in Scottsdale, Arizona. I spent several hours in SketchUp putting together a series of images which we could create pricing and discuss design opportunities before the property was purchased.

EXTERIOR FACADE RENDERING

The owner of several downtown Denver bar’s saw the opportunity to transform an old bar into something better. Through close design development with Davis he aspired to create a new client base with a mid-century working class tone. He wanted to incorporate strong rust, structural steel and worn brick. I worked closely with the team to document the existing conditions and study how those conditions could be developed into something new.

Dr. Geraghty’s practice had outgrown their old space and sought to build new in a vacant tenant space. I worked closely with the client, overseen by Joe Lear (Associate Principal), to create a new office space with strict design guidelines. As the project manager I completed all documentation, contracts and handled all client/contractor/engineer coordination both in the office and in the field.
