JESSICA NOBLE, JEWELLERY & SILVERSMITHING BA (HONS) Exploring the symbiotic evolution between man and urban space, Jessica's designs respond to the energy and exhilaration found in the everyday city landscape. Focused around the streets of London, Jessica’s current project, Body, being and Environment captures ideas of modern urban social theory, questioning how we adapt and evolve with the city environment and how the flow and energy of urban space brings us together both socially and spacially, exaggerates our need for individuality and prompts a sense of being. Jessica’s designs invites celebration of this synergy between man and space. studio-jndesign.moonfruit.com jessicanobledesign.moonfruit.com

Body, Being & Environment Contemporary urban social stimulus Living in a vibrant, busy and densely populated city, I am constantly invigorated by the sheer energy of city life and often left lingering in amazement at the complexities of our social behaviour within such a crowded, fast paced and energetic environment. The relationship between the body and urban space seems to be evolutionary; we continually strive to adapt to more efficient and innovative ways of utilising the city landscape, and in turn, the landscape evolves, shapes and adapts with us, constantly shifting in an on-going state of flux. Exploring the cohesive relationship between our physical being and our surrounding urban environment, I am interested in how urban space works in synergy with the body, how we engage and interact within urban space and how the overwhelming stimulus of the city environment shapes our sense of being, prompts behaviour and brings us together; socially, spatially and physically.
TOGETHER: The thick, swelling crowds of the city may draw out feelings of loneliness and isolation, but much joy is also experienced when we are brought together. Togetherness can give a sense of belonging, of safety and sense of self. Urban life unifies us, brings together social, cultural and spatial ties. It forms a contemporary idea of community: the sharing of diverse cultural, moral, social ideals. Spatial and social togetherness draws us physically together, crowds move fluidly in bodily closeness through and around enclosed spaces. The closeness of others, the crowds, the exhilaration. The intoxicating joy of togetherness.
MOTION Drawn physically together within urban space, human motion organises into a continual and speedy flow. Crowds gain momentum and motion, sweeping and flowing; a natural kinetic current, flowing with energy. The speed of the fast paced urban life leaves no time for stillness. The city is continually moving, flowing with people, ideas and commodities. Spaces, though often enclosed, are not always as restrictive as may be assumed. Enveloping city spaces manipulate the movement of people, adapted to enhance the fluidity of human motion, to encourage mobility and speed. To be transitional. Synergising human movements with urban spaces evokes a sense of intimacy between us and the surrounding space, being part of the surrounding environment and the environment becoming part of our self.
IDENTITY When together amongst the dense populations found in our city life, it can be said that we strive for the independence of the individual. Surrounded with many other identities, we risk being just one of the crowd. in fear of being washed out in a sea of crowds, identity becomes exaggerated. De-individualisation of the masses is transformed to strong individualism, an independence from the crowd. The need to stand out and be noticed is increased and identity is asserted. The emotional intensification of city life increases our desire to find our sense of self. This display of self, is a performance to the masses: A declaration of independence. In large social units, such as in the urban environment, anonymity is a further catalyst to identity behaviour. It is the safety of being anonymous that enables identities to be reinvented: Anonymous eccentricity. This metropolitan anonymity removes the fear of personal judgement. To be anonymous, also provides the safety to blend in. To be unnoticed, to be part of the crowd. Whichever choice, standing out or blending in, urban life enables us the unconstrained luxury of being seen, or not.
