a new world

In the likeness of the ancient Roman and Greek empires, Great Britain viewed itself as a modern ruling empire. With a number of established colonies in North America, Great Britain received the allegiance of the American colonists, who viewed themselves as citizens and subjects of King George III.

Within the colonies, social lines were well-drawn. Birth and pedigree were paramount to the social structure and cultural interactions. As the colony stabilized following a period of unrest, the white middle class emerged, bringing with it the importance of social interaction, manners, and deportment.

Loyal subjects to the English Crown, European settlers established a colony in Virginia for the purpose of creating trade goods and sending them back to England. These ties to Britain reached beyond trade relationships, into the way in which they were governed.

As American colonial life became less fraught with struggle and survival, America emerged as a land of opportunity and relative equality. With opportunities to make a good living and life, colonists found themselves embracing new beginnings in the wilderness of this foreign land.

THE NOUVEAU BRITISH CONCEPT IMAGERY

American colonists were a people of paradox: venturing to a new country with boundless optimism for a fresh future, while remaining closely connected with their British heritage. Into this new land of opportunity they established British customs, aesthetics, and cuisine. Just as with these early adventurers, for this space at the Inn, time-period elements will enrich and enliven the new. Stately textures and lines inspired from the 18th-century British gentry social class will co-mingle with elements that embody the simple, functional spirit of the original colonists.

THE NOUVEAU BRITISH SPATIAL IMAGERY LOBBY

Upon entering the Inn, guests will be met with the same sense of drama and excitement that greeted the new colonists when they reached Plymouth. Here, guests will marvel at the majesty of the flora and fauna of the New World. The grandeur of the woods, stones, and precious metals will temper the freshness of the architectural lines.

Taking design inspiration from the gentry male persona, the Rockefeller Room will encapsulate the cool sophistication of the period's fashion. Before they were Americans, of course, the colonists were British, and they brought with them a British sense of economics; fortunes were made in dark-paneled rooms over cigars and ale. The new designs will maintain the intimate, masculine, and comfortable qualities of the places in which a businessman from the era would feel most at home. SCALE: 1/4" = 1'-0"

NOUVEAU BRITISH CONCEPT IMAGERY THE FORMAL GARDENS

In many ways at odds with the uncultivated wilderness of America, The British Garden harnesses nature through greenery that is manicured and symmetrical. The refinment in its aesthetic is reflected in the topiary and tiling observed throughout the gardens. Above all, the garden serves as an active social place, where guests can gather with friends in the shade by a cool fountain, romantic enough to even perhaps inspire new love.

HENRY MORRISON FLAGLER

THE COCONUT PALM

GREAT BLUE HERON

Flagler was an American industrialist and founder of Standard Oil. He is known as the father of St. Augustine, Miami and Palm Beach Florida. As a wedding present to Mary Lily in 1902 Flagler, built a Beaux-Arts mansion,. Whitehall. With more than 100,000 square feet and 75-plus rooms, Whitehall was described in 1902 by the New York Herald as, “... more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world.”

Palm Beach received name from a shipwreck named the “Providencia” which washed ashore in 1878 with a load of coconuts. It’s load of coconuts was taken as salvage, and within a decade the area was filled with coconut palms. Coir, or coconut fibre, is a natural fibre with bold texture. Texture will add a subtle, yet powerful dimension to the interior and is responsible for keeping the space memorable.

Native to Palm Beach, the great blue heron, is the largest heron in North America and one of the continent’s most recognizable wading birds. Notable features of the great blue heron include gray with a slight azure blue flight feathers, redbrown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front.
