what’s in store? Museums are known for the wealth of objects that they have on display. But behind the scenes there are also many items that are in store. This exhibition shows some of the more unusual items from STEAM’S collection stores and tells the stories behind them. Stores fulfil an important function. They are not only a safe area to keep those items not on display, they also provide an environment where important historical artefacts can undergo remedial care, conservation, cataloguing and research. It is also important for a museum to have a reserve collection that allows us to rotate items on display. This allows artefacts to “rest” in a dark, environmentally controlled store. Equally, some of the items are too delicate to ever be on public display but are still an important part of our GWR collection. Items in store help us build a more comprehensive story of the GWR. We have items in the collection that do not fit the current themes of the main displays, but these items are brought out for display in temporary exhibitions or for use by historical researchers.
