JESSICA STEELE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
Here, then, is what I wanted to tell you of my architecture. I created it with courage and idealism, but also with an awareness of the fact that what is important is life, friends, and attempting to make this unjust world a better place in which to live. -Oscar Niemeyer

GROWING TAPESTRY | PUBLIC SPACE INFILL
SITE: HISTORIC MARIETTA SQUARE, GEORGIA FIFTH YEAR | 2014-15 | PROFESSOR MINE HASHAS
The Growing Tapestry inacts the unsused spaces in our cities, creating a new public threshold for the local residents and businesses. The gridshell canopy system fills in the left over spaces between the buildings creating indoor/outdoor rooms for the already existing activites in the historic downtown area. The chosen site lies in downtown Marietta along a pedestrain and biking trail that will connect the suburb city to downtown Atlanta. The trail runs alongside an existing railroad line that poses pollution issues for inhabitants. The canopy and green walls act as a screen for the CO2 pollutants released by the passing trains and creates spaces for year round community use.

VIVERE L’ACQUA {LIVING WATER} | LAKE COMO WATERFRONT WORKSHOP SITE: COMO, ITALY; PIAZZA CAVORI AND OTHER SITES ALONG THE WATERFRONT
We sought to restore the original intent of the waterfront to create a connection between the elements of water and land without controlling nature. The site is situated along the shore in Como, Italy. Working with a group of 8 different nationalities over a two week period, we came up with a solution that brought the water lifestyle back to the residents and visitors of Como. We chose key areas where the water once was to become the focus of the project. The moving water platforms create flexible areas to lengthen the city. Softer edges dissolve the barriers that were present on the site both physically and visually. 13

KINETIC EVOLUTION | URBAN DESIGN STUDIO SITE: WEST ATLANTA - EAST OF NORTHSIDE DRIVE FOURTH YEAR | FALL 2013 | PROFESSOR AMEEN FAROOQ
The site is situated at Northside Drive and 17th Street; directly North of Ikea and Atlantic Station but seperated by the railroad running along the Southside of the site. It lies in a former industrial area with the many of the buildings demolished or vacant. The site seperates the Loring Heights neighborhood from Atlantic Station and the rest of Atlanta to the South and East. This creates a dangerous (in terms of the lack of walkability and eyes on the street) and useless area that has potential to become an efficient mixed-use development designed for the wide array of people in an urban environment. We are proposing a design that creates new links and connections for residents, the public and visitors generating social engagement with each other, the natural landscape and the built urban environment bringing a kinetic spontaneity to Atlanta's West side. Our vision is to bring out the rustic urban nature of Atlanta. LORING HEIGHTS

TREEHOUSE REST STOP | RESTROOM PAVILION SITE: ROTTENWOOD CREEK TRAIL; BETWEEN LIFE AND SPSU; MARIETTA, GA SITE AND LANDSCAPE ELECTIVE | FALL 2013 | PROFESSOR MOONEY
SITE PLAN “My treehouse is also this kind of everyday antipole: as concrete as its location in a real, existing tree may be, the house itself is - in a literal sense - ‘removed’; although it as no foundations, it is still firmly rooted. For me, it is the embodiment of a childhood dream of freedom and safety.” -Mirko Bogataj, Seeboden 2005 (from Treehouses) 17
GEORGIA WILDLIFE FEDERATION MILL CREEK NATURE CENTER SITE: ADJACENT TO THE MALL OF GEORGIA; BUFORD, GA THIRD YEAR | SPRING 2013 | PROFESSOR LIZ MARTIN The Mill Creek nature center is an 88-acre tract of land maintained by the Georgia Wildlife Federation for the purpose of wildlife conservation and recreational walking trails. The nature trails wind through forest and wetlands that are home to over 100 species of birds, mammals, numerous species of reptiles and aquatic species. Trails connect with the Greenway Walkway leading to the Gwinnett Environmental Heritage Center. The nature center’s structure is inspired by the elevated duck blind on site. The metal re-bar facade allows visitors to view the bird habitats without disrupting the ecosystem and protects the birds from flying into the glazing. The bridge level is cantilevered over the ridge to allow expansive views throughout the wetlands and trails. The structure is also universally designed so that it is accessible to all.

WOVEN REFLECTIONS CHILDREN’S GARDEN PAVILION SITE: ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN SECOND YEAR | SPRING 2011 | PROFESSOR JAMES MORRISON The small pavilion was inspired by many of the beautiful plants throughout the garden and the site itself is surrounded on three sides by mature oak and other greenery. The ultimate goal was to create a structure that reflected the surrounding environment for visitors of all ages to pause and reflect. The structure itself was inspired by many of the climbing vines seen throughout the garden and woven willow structures by artist Patrick Dougherty.

SCRAP DOME | EXPERIMENTAL WOOD STRUCTURE ENVIRONMENTAL TECH 1 | FALL 2012 | PROFESSOR JOSEPH CHOMA The structure was built to explore the properties of wood. We choose to use scraps of wood from local construction sites along with wooden dowels to form a simple connection. The result is a undulating semi-dome pavilion for pause and reflection with views focused towards the sky.
