AREA GOOD NEWS As our Illinois operations continue to grow, so has the need to stay at the forefront of employee development. In February of 2015 NPL Illinois will have a 20 person training and computer lab designed to facilitate OQ training, new hire orientations, foreman meetings, and other staff functions on a weekly basis. Additionally the area will be adding a mobile field evaluation trailer to provide hands on training with the use of props and simulations. Joshua Adams, Operations Manager states, “The addition of the mobile evaluation trailer and training facility demonstrates NPL’s commitment to safety and quality. By providing employees the best facility for training and testing, we will continue to leverage our talent to ensure our customers’ needs are exceeded.”

A FORGOTTEN ART THE HANDWRITTEN NOTE When was the last time you received or sent a handwritten note? For some us, it’s been too long — unless you’re Paul Theisen! Recently, Paul, VP, Information Services, received a handwritten note from Brigadier General William “Bill” Hall thanking him for supporting a team member serving our country. Paul Wagner, Manager of Business Services – Information Services, has been a member of the Arizona Army National Guard for 24 years. We all thank you for your service Paul!

GOOD CATCH PROGRAM A GOOD CATCH IS WHEN AN EMPLOYEE REPORTS A NEAR-MISS, A BEST PRACTICE UNKNOWN TO OTHERS, EQUIPMENT ISSUES OR UNRECOGNIZED HAZARDS TO THE SAFETY AND QUALITY DEPARTMENT.

THINK AHEAD

Forms for reporting a Good Catch are available in crew trucks, training areas, common employee message areas, or online at www.GoNPL.com/goodcatch. Employees can also contact a member of the Safety Department or call the Ethics Point Hotline at: 623-879-4663. A near-miss reported by an employee can help improve the knowledge, skills and abilities of all NPL employees.

Reporting a near-miss event can help prevent an injury or even a fatality of a fellow worker and has worked effectively in other industries, including aviation and military. Studies have shown that for every injury there were 30 near misses and industries using near-miss reporting systems have lower injury rates and fewer worker fatalities.

REACHING OUT TO OUR COMMUNITIES In November, NPL hosted a group of excited young minds from Arizona State University who were interested in learning more about career opportunities in the construction field. They were introduced to the NPL Internship Program offering students in Construction Management a chance to get their hands dirty with some on the job training!

“The internship program between ASU and NPL will provide our students with excellent exposure to real-life utility construction. This invaluable experience will help cultivate and develop future utility professionals.” – Dr. Samuel T. Ariaratnam Professor, Arizona State University
