Hello!

My name is Jessica, I’m an Architecture graduate from Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung. From what I have learned in college, I believe architecture is about problem solving and structural thinking, rather than just a good, eye-catching outlook. I become passionate to create spaces that can increase human well-being. I consider myself an organized person, and a fast, independent learner. I have been an active member of the Parahyangan Architecture Student Association (HMPSArs) from 2017-2019. I have also participated in the Bamboo Nation Network volunteer activities that collaborating with other universities. From these experiences, I realized I’m an eager person and very adaptive to various tasks given both individually and in groups. I believed I’m a responsible and creative person, who is quite attentive to details. About personal interest, I love hand-drawings and architectural rendering, so I always eager to improve my skills in those area. I am constantly curious about different cultures and places that exist around the world, and because of that, I love learning new languages and always open myself for new knowledge.

01 NON-ACADEMIC PROJECTS Non-academic projects include projects I was working in my internship and professional work at an architectural firm. The projects showed are the ones that I worked by myself with guidance from the principal architect as final decision maker. Through these projects, I learned about different areas in architectural design, and get to broaden my knowledge in architectural details such as lighting and interior furnishings. Through assisting these real projects, I also learned about how to communicate ideas with clients, knowing and giving solution to client’s needs.

12

LIGHTING DESIGN A traditional complex houses, the tasks are to design exterior lighting for the building and surrounding area, design landscape around the house, the entrance, and parking area, also visualize design proposed. Software used: Sketchup, Autocad, Photoshop, Lumion

13

The exterior lighting are made to accentuate the shape of the building, so the lights used are beamed from the bottom up. The use of lights with this technique also can give the building a more magnificent effect.

INTERIOR RENOVATION PROJECT The project is a big multi-storey house, which the interior is felt a little bit empty and less homey. This family wants to change the atmosphere of their living room, by giving a new style to the house. The challenge felt by designer is how to make large space feel more homey. Software used: Sketchup, Autocad, Photoshop, Lumion

19

The family loves Japanese culture, they love reading comics and collect lots of antiques. To fulfill their needs, this living room is designed with a little Japanese-style touch, a mini-library, and lots of shelves to store their collections. The large space is accented by using a ceiling design, that formed space inside space, which is also to differentiate activities and provide a feeling of warmth and homy in the space.

26

FURNITURE DESIGN The task given is to design a series of furnitures that implements today’s home furniture trends. After analyzing and researching, designer found that natural-earthy tones, sustainable, and wood-based furniture are the popular trends in furnishing minimalist houses.

27

RATTAN SERIES With light-coloured wood and natural rattan material, these furnitures give of warm and comfy feelings of home. The furnitures designed are dining chairs, bar stool, and rack. Software used: Sketchup, Enscape, Photoshop

28

FURNITURE DESIGN The task given is to design a series of furnitures that are ready-made and easy to mass-produced, but still shows the aesthetics and functionality as a product. The challenge is about how to attract consumers because of the uniqueness and the originality of the design, and how the product must blend in any places with various design styles and existing conditions.

29

STACKED SERIES The “stacking” concept was chosen because of its effective and functional nature that matches as a mass-produced products. In addition, this “stacking” concept makes furniture storage much easier and not taking up space for both consumers and manufacturers’ warehouse. By paying attention to details of the designs, the furniture can still look attractive either separated or stacked.

02 MICROLIBRARY

The microlibrary aims to create and develop reading habits for children, and also supports community learning activities at all levels, both formal and informal. This building has a function of a microlibrary on the top floor, while on the ground floor it functions as a multi-purpose room and children’s playroom. The function of this multi-purpose room is specialized for the locals because of the needs to have a place for community to gather around. Located in Desa Manteos, with a site surrounded by two road entrance and one river-view side, being on the lowest ground compared to other houses. The building is characterized by its open nature, natural air circulation, and the effectiveness of local materials used.

32

Design Features River View The building was designed to optimize the potential view towards the Cikapundung River on the South side of the site. The entrance, multi purpose room, and the balcony on the top floor which is a reading room are also made open facing the South to get the best view.

Climate-based Zoning Spatial planning takes consideration of climate and sun condition, where the service and circulation areas are located on the West side of the site. Meanwhile, the multi-purpose room, play room, reading room and the library are placed on the East-South side of the site because the spaces are used for a long time.

Cross Ventilation The building is designed by utilizing the natural ventilation system, by ensuring the cross-ventilation system runs in the building. To maximize the air movement, every sides of the building use porous walls, such as the use of openwork bricks in the circulation area, the use of green facade in the form of bamboo pots that arranged vertically, and also the bamboo partitions used in the children’s play area on the ground floor. The use of porous walls also make the building look more open and friendly.

03 THE PERPETUA

The Perpetua is a wide-span building with concert hall as its main function. Carrying the theme “music is timeless”, the designer believes that music is something that everyone likes regardless of age, will forever be remembered, and will continue to innovate according to the trend at the times. In accordance to the theme, the concept adopted in this design is ‘everlasting’ or ‘eternal’, which is what the name implies, perpetua. This concept is then applied to 3 (three) aspects of design, which are the characteristic, the form, and the abstraction. Located in Kota Baru Parahyangan, Bandung, most of the area around the site are still empty. One of the challenges is to make a splendid concert hall that complement the surrounding area.

38

DESIGN CONCEPT Form Idea The idea of the form comes from the shape of a musical note that sits between two stave lines. The shape made is an oval that flanked by two stripes. The building plan and site plan are then adjusted to the analysis of the site and function requirements for the building.

Eternity The character ‘eternal’ is represented by the form of the main mass which is round, a shape that has no end and considered to symbolize eternity. This musical note was also chosen because it is the language of music that is still used from the 13th century to the present, thus proving that music is timeless indeed.

Abstraction The character ‘eternal ed into a design tha and able to adapt to environment. This sus can be seen in the opt of renewable energy u as well as cross-vent the lobby.

l’ is also abstractat’s substainable, o the surrounding stainable concept timization the use using solar panels, tilation system in

39

Blur-Effect The concept of ‘adapting’ can be seen from the facade, which made from hollow metal frames arranged in such a way to form a frame like a bird cage. This frame is intended to give the building a “blur-effect”, blurring the tall building to make it friendlier to the empty surroundings.

Axis & Hierarchy Having a clear axis between the building, the site, and the roundabout which is the focal point to the site. The axis becomes a hierarchy in the building, where the direction of the stage and the seating of the audiences also leads to the axis. In addition, pedestrian way which is also the focal point of the landscape design is also made to follow this axis and hierarchy.

04 M HOTEL

The big theme “Bandung as Creative and Educational City” was chosen because designer saw a great potential of the site in developing Bandung’s creative industry. The building is named M Hotel, M is taken from the word marche, derived from French, means market. Marche translated into Bahasa also have meaning as walking. Both of these meanings are related to the design. The hotel provides an avenue atmosphere on the ground floor, as a form of response towards the urban context. Located in Merdeka Road, Bandung, is a travelapolis area that is very strategic. For this reason, in the design, the pedestrian walk is one of the main focus, is made wide and integrated with the podium floor to become an “avenue” which has retail function.

46

47

DESIGN CONCEPT Tenuous Building Area The surrounding area which is a tenuous building area is responded by creating a public space on the ground floor, and the building’s podium is following the road border line, in order not to damage the city road space that has been formed. Urban Study Design Prioritizing pedestrians, meaning that the car lane is not exposed but is placed on the edge of the site. The building design is also following a perpendicular grid like the surrounding buildings. Responses towards the roundabout are carried out by providing pedestrian access, and the corner of the building towards the roundabout is made not sharp. View-Study of Cultural Heritage Buildings Cultural heritage buildings become the vista of hotel rooms. In the West, there are BIP, Sariningsih Hospital, and low-roof housing. In the East, there are apartment and connecting park between apartment and hotel. Circulation Study The circulation for pedestrian is not cut off, is made wide and people can enter the building from all directions. Circulation in and out for services is through R.E. Martadinata Street, while the circulation for user is through Merdeka Street.

Perspective of the Textile Gallery

DESIGN FEATURES The hotel has textile gallery, which can be used by local craftsmen to showcase their works. The textile gallery is also intended to support and introduce various creative industries in Bandung. The hotel building has a total of 10 floors, with 1 semi-basement and 2 basement for parking and utility purposes. The ground level is raised 1.2 meter of the ground, to provide air circulation for the semi-basement, to make loading dock on the ground level, and to create a difference of space between pedestrian and ground level, since it has no walls to separate them.

Perspective from Textile Gallery to Innercourt

The hotel also has indoor and semi-outdoor restaurant, which can be used for various events. The swimming pool which is placed on the 2nd floor is also a combination of outdoor and semi-outdoor. The total number of rooms in this hotel is 70 rooms, with 3 types of units: standard unit, deluxe unit, and suite unit.

05 AVONTUUR

Down-syndrome and autism are still often considered as mental illnesses. The lack of concern from government nor family has caused these children with special needs can not develop optimally. The government program that focused on optimizing inclusive schools only seem unhelpful for children with severe autism/down-syndrome. This project has purpose to fulfill the rights of every children, that is education, specifically for those with special needs; to get education according to their ability, being in a community that support each other, and to get the medical help in form of therapy and psychologist consultation.

56

COMMUNICATION-RELATED HANDICAPS Autism and down syndrome are different, but they have one main deficiency, that is difficulty in communication. This is the background of the site and building concept determined, centralize. The practice of this concept in design also to focus on increasing intimacy and togetherness between users, with expectation that children will feel at home, and communicating more comfortably.

57

NATURE AS COMMUNICATOR This site located in Sub-Urban area is chosen because its surrounding that are still green and natural can help children get neutrall, comforting stimulus which are rare to be found in cities. Having fairly steep contour, the site is designed to be “adventurous” area for children, so they can get experiences of going to school and going back to home, gather up with friends at some point area, et cetera.

59

LANDSCAPE PLAN

One of the main characteristic of the design is flowing buildings, means every mass has their own order, connecting with each other, creating sequence for users. By blurring out the boundaries between building and nature, users can feel the light and wind that are flowing through as if they’re walking in a forest.

60

COMMUNITY BUILDING

DORMITORY BUILDING

The design is divided into 4 big functions: education complex, health complex, community complex, and dormitory. The whole masses are connected with semi-outdoor circulation, consists of ramps and stairs, protected from rain, and surrounded by farming garden, in which children can have gardening activity and also acts as location marker, by planting different types and colors of the vegetation.

61

HEALTH BUILDING

EDUCATION BUILDING

Education complex contains classes from kindergarten, primary school, and vocational school. This building also holds hydro-therapy, gym, and apartment/office simulation rooms. Health complex contains therapy rooms, consultation rooms, and examination room. Community complex contains administration office, multi-function hall, and family-support rooms. The dormitory can hold up to 52 children, with dining area, pantry on every floor, and caregivers rooms.

06 VISUALIZATION PROJECTS The images shown are the ones that I worked by myself, my selected favorites. I started to built interest in architectural visualization in the final year of my college, specifically when I started my internship. At first I was assigned to create basic visualization, and I have zero knowledge about archviz. But after I started, I find archviz very interesting because there are so much to explore. I started to learn independently, while getting assist from friends and mentors. I believe archviz can help designer communicate their ideas in a better way to people.

66

The images shown below are design for a renovation project. The house that has already built, has its own difficulty in re-design processes, because of structures, other architectural element, and client’s spatial needs that need to collaborate to fulfil client’s wishes. In this project, I assisted the design process, spesifically in interior design, also helped with 3D modeling and created visualization images for presentation. The whole process took only 2 months, because of the house demolishing schedule that took almost the same time. The existing house has a modern-classic style that is maintained in the new design, while adjusting to a new concept of a white house. With all-white interior, the house look more elegant, with a little touch of wood and greeneries to give tropical house vibes.

The main building is the lobby area, is designed to be an iconic building on the site, that people can see and detect from far away. The facade is made from polycarbonate with led light which can glow at night. The villas are also made with a lot of glass openings, to maximize the view of the Bandung City.

73

The images shown below are visualization for villas project in Gunung Batu, Bandung. The site has a pretty steep contour, so the villas design proposed is made like house on stilts. In this project, I just assigned to make the visualization images for day and night. Software used: Sketchup, Lumion, and Photoshop.

07 SKETCHES & WATERCOLOUR I was one of those people who wanted to study Architecture because I like to draw. Over time even though I knew Architecture is much more than just ‘drawing’, my love for drawing has not faded. I like to sketch, doodle, or even just holding my mechanic pencil everytime. I think sketching is one of the simplest and easiest way for brainstorming ideas. I also think it is the fastest way to translate or illustrate concept in mind into tangible things. I still keep drawing as one of my hobbies which I will always try to improve.

87

08 MAQUETTES Besides sketches and water colour, I also love doing other handcurated things, such as maquettes. The image shown on the left is one of my commision project for existing maquettes. I think maquettes are the realest kind of visualization that represent design best, because of how we can feel the scale, the proportion, how we can touch, and see a bigger picture of the design and the context. For me, maquette has also helped me thorugh the beginning of design processes, especially massing. Maquettes help me analyzed the best forms, spatial, or even material realtionship, that can not be replaced by modeling in a software. I believe the act of making and manipulating things with our hands can produce more efficient, creative, and insightful solutions to problems.
