the most exciting two minutes in all of sports, it’s no surprise that the southern panache surrounding the Kentucky Derby (held this year on May 7) spreads so easily to the metro. Kansas City actually has a winning history with the rosy race. The 1938 trophy went to a copper-brown colt named Lawrin, who was born and bred on Prairie Village’s Woolford Farm, land that is now Mission Road Antique Mall, Corinth Shopping Center and Corinth Downs. So really, it’s your obligation as a Kansas Citian to throw a charmingly posh Derby party packed with springtime blooms (our gorgeous palette of pink and peach petals was arranged by Beco Flowers), traditional Derby dishes and hat-bedecked guests. Don’t stress. We’re here with all the resources you’ll need to jockey your bash from the first toast to the finish line. story by elyse weidner | photographed by aaron leimkuehler

clockwise from top: It's easy to get carried away with festive flair when dressing your table (and yourself for that matter—but more on that later) for a Kentucky Derby affair. To keep your table from tilting over-the-top, choose a simple, uncovered surface to anchor your flowery spread and surround it with unfussy chairs. An elegant white linen napkin monogrammed and bordered with pink and green embroidery and gathered in a blooming napkin ring, both available at Sharyn Blond Linens, are the perfect accompaniments. If you're not lucky enough to throw your fete in the center of a thriving horse farm, find unexpected ways to work in equestrian touches like horseshoes, prize ribbons or old racing photos. An oversize julep vase holds roses and peonies in shades of pink, arranged by Beco Flowers.
At left and below: Our menu (housed in a frame from Webster House) features traditional southern dishes like beef tenderloin with Henry Bain sauce, a topping famously created by a Louisville waiter of that name. A bourbon hazelnut pecan pie, made by Sara Bleything of Sorelle Pie Bakery and on a cake plate from Scandia Down, is served with crème de menthe-infused whipped cream. above: Fashion blogger and stylist Jessie Artigue (styleandpepper.com) tops off her spring look with a striped hat from The Missing Piece.
