Dedication SIFU ALAN GOLDBERG “COMBINING THE HARD & THE SOFT TO MAKE THE GREAT!” BY JOE CORLEY, PROFESSIONAL KARATE ASSOCIATION

If you step into the streets of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs, and if you came from a laid back and genteel part of the world sprinkled with “pretty pleases” and “thank you’s”, you likely experience a pretty quick, and some would say, “rude awakening”. Others would sing you a few chords of “Welcome to the Jungle”, and still others would say “Get used to it darlin’!” This is the Big Apple. The place where the Big Ball drops every December 31 in Times Square, where the movers and shakers will tell you that all the moving and shaking goes on. From the Trump Tower to Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building to Ellis Island and Wall Street, huge cyclones of big action and big change emanate from this steel jungle. Some call it “Hard”. It is from this hard environment that the grit and determination of one Sifu Alan Goldberg was molded, and he has been a one-man cyclone in effecting a special kind of change. To effectuate the atmosphere for the change he heralded into East Coast Martial Arts, he decided at the turn of this new millennium to plant a seed 132 miles from the center of the “harshness” of the Big Apple in neighboring New Jersey’s Atlantic City, and Sifu Goldberg was determined to grow one of the most prestigious martial arts events in the world today. Now, 19 years later, the man who went from hard style Shotokan to the softer, but still hard style Wing Chun, set his series of events into motion in a more “polite” surrounding of the Tropicana in Atlantic City. Here, the still strong men and strong women of the Big Apple, the polite and quietly deadly Martial Artists from the South, the West, the Midwest and New England, from Europe, South Africa, South America, Canada and points everywhere gather to bask in the hospitality of togetherness this sometimes brusque New Yorker has nurtured now for nearly two decades. This event has “style”. It starts with the host, clad in a dapper black suit and black hat and a positive swagger that says “Time to get things done”, mixed with the kind of personality that says “I have your back”, and the “Welcome to Atlantic City” reserved for the cadre of martial arts stars, film celebrities, politicians and others who descend on his Mega Event, the Hall of Honors. “Our event started with the aim of rewarding hard-working people with coverage in our Action Martial Arts Magazine” Sifu Goldberg said, “and it has evolved in so many ways, with so many great people having graced our ‘Halls’. In many ways, it has taken on a life and energy of its own, and I am very pleased and proud of the people attracted to the event. We all leave better off for having been here and having connected with each other. At first, I wanted to connect the East Coast with the west Coast, but it has morphed to seeing the whole world of martial arts now connect.” Publisher, Master Martial Artist, Producer, Mentor and recipient of his late friend Joe Lewis’ Eternal Warrior Award, Sifu Alan Goldberg has combined the best of the Big Apple with the Best of the Martial Arts, and for that, the martial arts world is indeed thankful. Congratulations on another outstanding success, Sifu!

This important book is a compilation of legends, leaders and teachers. As Martial Artists we have the commitment to inspire, motivate, give back and encourage sports participation. Promoting a life of health, fitness, and wellness in the Martial Arts. When you give you get. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give. When you focus on making a difference in other people's lives, your life is the one that improves the most. To be successful you must have inner strength, an unbreakable will, and unstoppable spirit and persistence. You will FAIL. You will FAIL often. It will be very discouraging at times. It will test you to your very core. DO NOT FEAR FAILURE! We all share the experience of adversity, challenges and obstacles, the failures and successes. Everyone fails...I have failed many times. How you handle FAILURE is what will define your character and determine how your story will end. This is what separates the winners from the losers . Part of the journey to greatness is accepting...... that you will fail. At that moment of failure you are tested. You either quit, give up, stay down OR you get up and YOU RISE. Never allow your mind to negotiate with your will to succeed. The World Martial Arts Leaders in this book will all tell you the same thing. It takes years of focus, discipline, commitment, relentless drive and a very hard work ethic. It is about having a dream, turning that dream into a vision that you set into motion with a goal and a plan. Winners never quit, and quitters never win. What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th. Persistence overcomes resistance. Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence. Whether you think you can or you

think you can’t, you’re right. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% of what u do about it. What will your legacy be? What do you want to be remembered for? Be the change you wish to see in the world...There is no greater satisfaction than knowing you had positive impact and made a difference... You can get everything you want in life if you will just help enough other people get what they want. We must always strive to do better than our previous best. Be a lifelong teacher, mentor and leader and share your Art, so that Martial Arts and the lives you touch becomes your legacy.

Introduction to

WHO’S WHO IN THE MARTIAL ARTS

The Martial Arts Masters & Pioneers book is not intended to be just another martial arts book. It is intended to be both inspirational and motivational as you discover martial artists whose lives have been changed through the study of an application of the principles taught in the martial arts. For more than 1500 years, martial arts has played a key role in personal development training and through the pages of this book you will discover the journey of hundreds of martial artists sharing their journeys, describing how the martial arts has impacted their lives. Masters & Pioneers represents the shift we Americans have brought to the arts, by recognizing the accomplishments of the individuals who practiced and perfected their arts, as opposed to the glorification of the arts themselves. In reading about what the Martial Arts Masters & Pioneers Leaders here have done, one can only marvel at the magnitude of individual effort expended and sacrifices made, from the grassroots activities to global media and organizational results. So, rather than debating which blocks or strikes or styles are more perfect, this work heralds the individual strengths of those who share the marital bond in America, whose legacies have impacted martial arts in America and thus, around the world. No matter where you are in life, the martial arts offer a powerful tool to aid you physically, mentally and spiritually as your mind and body work better together. The study of the martial arts helps individuals look inside and find their purpose. Along the path, they discover how to let go of the negativity and the things that hold them back in life. Enjoy here the journeys of Masters and Pioneers.

SHIHAN ABBOTT

Recently, I have noticed many following a narrower path with a less strenuous physical approach being pursued. Once where technique was practiced until perfection has given way to spoken theory and verbal discussion of techniques rather than physically/ mentally applying them. I’m old school, which means…if you want to attain a certain level of proficiency you must adhere to the age old tradition of practice makes perfect without over2

thinking the process. It is easy to become proficient in executing sword techniques but to master those techniques and fine-tune them to the next level becomes much more demanding and stringent. If I weren’t committed to my goal many years ago I would not have become the martial arts master I am today. Nor, I never would have been considered or placed on the cover of Black Belt Magazine. With diligence, motivation and my goals, I became a part of a select group of elite martial artists who also have been fortunate to grace the cover of Black Belt Magazine over its past 57 years in publication. If these selected martial artists can do it… and I can do it…So Can You. Remember, you are only limited by your own motivation and determination.

Pioneers

I’ve discovered over the years…that my dreams and desires were different than the goals and aspirations of many other martial artists. Even though, I was fascinated by the old masters I did not actually participate at that point in time. Then in the Fall of 1978 I earnestly begin to pursue the art. My thoughts and dreams were slowly becoming a reality and motivated me to proceed to my next level toward the attainment of perfection. In gaining this knowledge I realized one of the biggest aspirations to succeed is totally within oneself… mind and body! It’s all dependent upon your motivation and desire. I still remember all the extra efforts spent to perfect my techniques as I was being guided by master swordsmen who possessed the ultimate experience. Fortunately, I was in the right time and place.

“M R. USA” TONY ATLAS Anthony White (born April 23, 1954) better known by his ring name Tony Atlas is an American bodybuilder, powerlifter, and professional wrestler who has held multiple titles and championships in each sport. He is also known by his bodybuilding title, "Mr. USA" (a distinction he earned three times), the nom de guerre the "Black Superman", as well as an alter ego named Saba Simba. He returned as an on-screen manager for WWE, appearing on its now-defunct ECW brand. He re-signed with WWE in a Legends deal in mid-2012. A former bodybuilder turned World Tag Team Champion turned WWE Hall of Famer, "Mr. USA" Tony Atlas is also one of the most influential and significant African-American Superstars in the history of sports-entertainment. Prior to beginning his in-ring tenure, Atlas had a successful career as a bodybuilder, winning the title of Mr. USA. He also won numerous power lifting and bench press competitions, cementing his reputation as a bona fide strongman. After training with Larry Sharpe -- who would also later train such legends as Bam Bam Bigelow and King Kong Bundy at his "Monster Factory" in New Jersey -Atlas debuted in 1974 in the NWA. Known for his imposing physique and signature Gorilla Press Slam, "Mr. USA" 4

was particularly successful in Georgia early in his career, winning the NWA Georgia Heavyweight, Television and Tag Team Championships. Atlas also won several other regional championships during his time in the NWA. In the early 1980s Atlas came to WWE, where he became a regular partner of Rocky Johnson. On November 15, 1983, Atlas & Johnson made history when they defeated the Wild Samoans to become the first African-Americans to win the World Tag Team Championship. After losing the gold, Atlas became a frequent partner of Special Delivery Jones; he also participated in the WWE/NFL Battle Royal at WrestleMania 2, where he was eliminated by fellow Class of 2006 Hall of Fame inductee William "The Refrigerator" Perry. Following his time in WWE, Atlas toured Puerto Rico, winning the WWC Caribbean Championship and North American Tag Team Championship in Carlos Colon's World Wrestling Council. Tony then moved on to Texas, where he became a regular in World Class Championship Wrestling,

Anthony White honor in sports-entertainment: induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. Sent into the Hall by good friend SD Jones, Atlas gave one of the most memorable and moving acceptance speeches ever, touching on how he overcame extreme poverty during his youth in Virginia to become a sportsentertainment legend. winning the WCCW Television and Texas Tag Team Championships. He also competed in the AWA for a brief time near the end of the promotion's existence. In 1990, Atlas returned to WWE as Saba Simba for a brief period of time. He quickly moved on to WCW, where he teamed with Cactus Jack and The Barbarian in their rivalry with then-WCW Champion Ron Simmons. Following his departure from WCW, Atlas remained active in various independent promotions in the Northeast and MidAtlantic states, while also becoming a certiďŹ ed personal trainer in his home state of Maine.

Legend is a perfect way to describe Tony Atlas. His contributions to sportsentertainment will never be forgotten, and his place in history is cemented by his Hall of Fame induction and his trailblazing reign as World Tag Team Champion.

Even though he scaled back his in-ring appearances, Atlas got involved in other aspects of sports-entertainment. In addition to personal training, "Mr. USA" has tried his hand at promoting, running shows in New England under the banner of Atlas Championship Wrestling. He ran a small wrestling school in Maine as well. In 2006, Atlas was given the biggest 5

BOB

BACKLUND Robert Louis Backlund (born August 14, 1949) is an American retired professional wrestler with an in-ring career spanning over 30 years, best known for his tenures in the World Wide Wrestling Federation/World Wrestling Federation (WWWF/WWF, later known as World Wrestling Entertainment and currently simply known as WWE), where he is a two-time WWWF/WWF Heavyweight Champion/WWF World Heavyweight Champion (Backlund's first reign is the second-longest reign in the title history, behind Bruno Sammartino's first), as well as being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. As American as apple pie, Bob Backlund experienced success as both an adored hero and a loathed villain in a WWE career that spanned across three decades. The kid from Princeton, Minn., quickly became a fan favorite and the seventh WWE Champion in the company’s history at Madison Square Garden in 1978. But when Backlund left WWE for good in the mid -1990s, he was a deranged madman despised by the fans for his outlandish behavior. It was a stunning transformation for the once beloved man who reigned atop sports-entertainment in the pre-Hogan era. Backlund was a television staple after arriving in WWE thanks to his boyish 6

demeanor and superior talent, and on Feb. 20, 1978, he achieved what few before him had ever done and won the WWE Championship by defeating the flamboyant “Superstar” Billy Graham. A former athletic standout at North Dakota State University – where he won the NCAA Division II heavyweight wrestling championship – Backlund had the rare combination of good looks, pure strength and technical skill. The list of opponents’ that succumbed to Backlund during his reign reads like a who’s who of wrestling greats, including Sgt. Slaughter, Greg Valentine, Antonio Inoki, Don Muraco and Jimmy Snuka. He even defended the title against other promotions’ top dogs, including the NWA’s Harley Race and

Robert Backlund years prior. The devastating hold put even the most talented Superstars in muscle-stretching agony and has been known to literally tear men apart.

Ric Flair and Bockwinkel.

the

AWA’s

Nick

By the early '80s, pop culture was changing and so was WWE. Backlund lost the WWE Championship to The Iron Sheik while trapped in the Camel Clutch in Madison Square Garden. Backlund never submitted, but his manager Arnold Skaaland opted to throw in the towel to avoid permanent injury. Three weeks later, Hulk Hogan became champion and Backlund quietly left WWE. After a decade, Backlund made an unexpected return in 1992. At this point, WWE had undergone many changes, and Backlund's boy-next-door looks didn't receive the same reaction they once had. After losing a highlyanticipated WWE Championship opportunity against Bret Hart, Backlund snapped and became Mister Backlund, a bowtie-wearing, dictionary -toting madman who enraged the WWE Universe. He assaulted WWE personalities with the Crossface Chickenwing, including Skaaland, who Backlund blamed for his title loss 10

Backlund received another opportunity at Hart’s WWE Championship at 1994’s Survivor Series in a “Throw in the Towel” Match. In spectacular irony, Backlund regained the WWE Championship the same way he had lost it 11 years earlier. With the “Hit Man” locked in the Chickenwing for more than eight minutes, Bret’s mother played the role of Skaaland and threw in the towel. He might have been more “eat your broccoli” than American apple pie, but Mr. Backlund was once again the champ. The three total days of his second reign did not quite match Backlund’s first six-year run with the title. Backlund slowly ended his in-ring career, had a memorable run for President of the United States in 1995 and briefly managed another American hero, Kurt Angle. Backlund’s impressive run at the top and subsequent descent into absurd lunacy makes for one of the most unique careers in WWE history. That’s why it was no surprise when the former WWE Champion was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in Madison Square Garden in 2013. Backlund was an accomplished amateur wrestler for the North Dakota State University Bison from the late 1960s to early 1970s. 7

HANSHI BOWEN Karate International of Durham was founded in 1980 by Hanshi Jessie Bowen as a Karate International franchise school under the Karate International brand. Hanshi Bowen spent the first three years of his martial arts study as student, instructor, and competitor. He began teaching the martial arts full time as an instructor for O’Sensei Wellendorf and built a reputation in sport karate. He became known throughout the southeast for his martial arts skills in form, weapons, and fighting. The American Martial Arts Association was the first martial arts organization to offer a business degree in martial arts management. Hanshi Bowen was one of its first graduates. The program was mandatory for anyone wanting to own a Karate International franchise. Karate International of Durham opened in 1980. Since opening, Hanshi Bowen has promoted over 400 students to black belt. Hanshi Bowen has been recognized by organizations throughout the country for his contribution to the martial arts. He was one of the first martial arts instructors to integrate martial arts into sports. He started with Coach Dick Crum, football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the mid 80's. He was also a 8

martial arts performance coach for four seasons under Coach Mack Brown, former UNC football coach. He was also a personal trainer for Carlos Boozer. He is a member of the Internal Mind Game Coaching Association, International Federation of Coaches, and Sports Hypnosis Coach, NLP Coach, Silva Life System Seminar facilitator and Life coach. Hanshi Bowen learned to apply the principles of martial arts and sports mind game coaching into bowling, winning over 40 amateur titles before becoming a PBA

Member (Professional Bowlers Association) in 2002. He became the bowling instructor for Duke University and performance coach for NCCU Women's Bowling Team, winning NCCU's first CIAA title. O’Sensei Jan Wellendorf sanctioned the advancement of Hanshi Bowen to 10thDegree Black Belt and assigned him the task of creating his own system of martial arts Aiki-Shinkai Karate. OSO CASEL Some of the most Powerful and influential words spoken to me by my Teachers, Mother/ Father/ Martial Artist/ Mentors: Do Your Best! Each One - Teach One! Eye to Eye - Heart to Heart! Always Be Prepared to Defend!

Show Your Strength and Have Faith in your Training!

My continuing study of the martial arts has taught me that I can Learn MORE! (and should).... That what I may see is the Top, still has a higher level above my sight or accomplishments. Humility is essential to grow.

Defend those who are Weak and Crush those who have no Respect for Humanity.... Then Teach a Better Way of Love for All!

I KNOW we Must Honor Our Ancestors, Honor our Teachers, Honor our Elders and Do Our Best to be Worthy of Honor!

My long career of martial arts competition, instruction and community service is part of my legacy (easily verifiable). I love my art, teach the art and live the art. By using the principles of the martial arts and many of the tenets of the most recognized religions of the world (and many obscure but profound teachers with spiritual consciousness), I have shared them with everyone I have come in contact with as a student, stranger on the street and have been willing to LEARN from them as well.

I have taught at:

Be Kind, Truthful, Honest, Courteous! Do Not Be Afraid - And If you Are, Don't Show It,

GM CORLEY

10th Degree Black Belt With A Mission

Corley began his karate classes at age 16, earned his black belt at 19, opened his first studio at 19, won three US titles in the next three years, founded the Battle of Atlanta at age 23 and has fervently spread the word ever since. Joe has sought to share the most practical physical karate movements available and combine those real life defensive techniques with modern American positive philosophy. 14

There are but a handful of men in the martial arts anywhere in the world who have accomplished so much for the furtherance of the martial arts philosophy and physical applications. As a fighter, Joe Corley won three United States Championships in point karate

Pioneers

Atlanta's Joe Corley is still a black belt and sports entrepreneur with a mission, most recently featured on the cover of the 2017 LEGENDS edition of the AMAA Who’s Who in the Martial Arts 2017 edition. A Now a Grand Master instructor with more than 5 decades experience in the martial arts, and the producer of PKA KARATE & KICKBOXING for television, Corley's life -long purpose for being has been to share with everyone the positive feelings of confidence, courage, intensity, focus, personal discipline and integrity engendered by good martial arts training and competition. He has done that through the promotion of the martial arts in his Atlanta chain of studios, through his Battle of Atlanta World Karate Championship and on television around the world .

Wallace won the first of its kind 9 round bout. Master Corley would later be hired by CBS to cover Superfoot’s future bouts because of his ability to articulate the inner workings of the sport and the techniques and strategies of the fighters.

and went on to retire as the number one ranked Middle Weight contender in the world. Now a 10th degree Black Belt in American Karate, Mr. Corley and his Black Belts have taught more than 50,000 men, women and children in his chain of Atlanta studios. As a Black Belt in Tang Soo Do, he opened Atlanta's first full time karate studio in 1967 while he was still competing and expanded the studios to become the most well known martial arts chain in the Southeast. In 1970, Joe Corley founded the BATTLE OF ATLANTA, one of the most prestigious open karate tournaments in the world. The Battle of Atlanta recently completed its Golden Anniversary and the GATHERING OF WORLD CHANGERS. The Battle, now owned and produced by Truth Entertainment, again hosted competitors from all over the world. In 1975, Joe Corley challenged Bill “Superfoot” Wallace for his PKA World Middleweight Title in what became a historic fight before 12,000 in Atlanta’s Omni.

Because of the great ratings at CBS, Master Corley also became the voice for American Karate and PKA KICKBOXING on other networks. He actually produced the programming and did commentary with long-term friends like Chuck Norris and the late Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) on NBC, CBS, ESPN, SHOWTIME, USA NETWORK, TURNER SPORTS, SPORTSCHANNEL AMERICA, PRIME NETWORK, SPORTSOUTH and on international television syndication. As expert analyst and host for PKA KARATE World Championships on network, cable and pay per view, Mr. Corley became synonymous with the sport to the millions of fans who followed the 1,000+ hours of coverage on television. With events originating from such diverse locales as 50 cities in the United States, Canada, France, Belgium, South Africa, South America and the United Arab Emirates, Joe Corley has educated 4 generations of sports fans. Master Corley has been named Official Karate Magazine’s Man of the Decade, was inducted into the prestigious Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame and the International Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame and has received more awards than anyone can count. 15

But the thing that continues to drive Joe Corley is the knowledge that he and his accomplished associates can use all their experiences to share with everyone around the world on television the great feelings of confidence, courage, discipline, honor and integrity that come from presenting the martial arts properly. His PKA KICKBOXING projects are the perfect vehicles to spread the messages of positive martial arts on a global scale. “The unequalled success of the UFC, built on our previous successes, has set the stage for real martial artists to achieve the ‘fame and fortune’ the athletes of the UFC are now enjoying”, he said. Joe is in regular meetings with astute sports entrepreneurs in order to kick off the new project for 2018-19 and beyond. “We have the UFC’s own research to indicate the timing is perfect for us now”, he said. Mr. Corley’s bride--Christina-- is his right arm and chief administrator in the Joe Corley Studio. Mr. Corley’s daughter, Christiana, 20, continues to be his lustrous link in this new millennium and his compelling force to make the martial arts world an even better place. Master Corley’s closest friends point to the PKC 10th Degree Grand Master certificate, saying the language of the certificate reflects the philosophy and humility they know to be the real Joe Corley. It reads:

16

Master Corley is consulting with a number of martial artists to share his wisdom and has been recruited to consult on other projects outside the martial arts. One such project is the introduction of a generation system destined to change the worlds of Solar, Wind Generation and Electric Vehicles. “Martial arts provided me with the opportunity to learn so many skills that apply to so many aspects of life”, he said. “I look forward to this ‘next half’ of my time on the planet applying the skills learned. I also fiercely love being a student, and I look forward to learning as much as I can in this last half. Learning brings me joy”, he smiled .

Joe Corley HUMILITY OF A GRAND MASTER One who has achieved the rank of GRAND MASTER in MARTIAL ARTS, in fact, DOES NOT FEEL WORTHY… Having BATTLED through the WARRIOR BLACK BELT RANKS OF 1ST, 2ND and 3RD DEGREE And Having PROUDLY ADMINISTERED the TEACHER / INSTRUCTOR RANKS OF 4TH and 5th DEGREE And Having skillfully and masterfully EDUCATED THE INSTRUCTORS as a PROFESSOR 6th and 7th DEGREE and Grand Master’s Jeff Smith & Joe Corley receive their PKC 10th Degree Black Belts at Battle of Atlanta 2016

Having CONSISTENTLY and DUTIFULLY GIVEN BACK TO THE MARTIAL ARTS COMMUNITY as 8TH and 9th DEGREE

“After 19 years as a 9th Degree Black Belt, I was so proud to earn my 10th Degree from the PKC and Grand Master Glenn Keeney. I was honored to have GM Pat Johnson, GM Allen Steen and GM Pat Burleson approve the PKC promotion. It was doubly sweet because lifelong friend Jeff Smith earned his that same day. These 5 men have all had such a great influence on my martial arts career in so many ways”.

The GRANDMASTER knows what he does not know; he knows how much there is left to learn. At the same time, he embodies the sentiments in Master Educator Stephen R. Covey’s 7 HABITS and his expression of HUMILITY: “Humility is the mother of all virtues. Courage is the father. Integrity the Child. Wisdom the Grandchild.” Having honorably carried out the BLACK BELT RESPONSIBILITIES above and having demonstrated exceptionally the virtues of WISDOM, INTEGRITY, COURAGE and HUMILITY THE PROFESSIONAL KARATE COMMISSION DOES HEREBY BESTOW UPON JOE CORLEY THE GRAND MASTER RANK OF 10th DEGREE BLACK BELT Article by Paul K. Arlington for Rainbow Publication’s Black Belt Magazine

SENSEI DELAUNAY I started martial arts when I was three years old. My mother wanted my brother and me to learn how to defend ourselves at any point. That time was needed - especially after her time was done here on earth. I grew up in Grass Valley, CA. My schooling was successful, and I graduated two years early. My junior year, I was the only one picked out of the school Nevada Union for Who's Who Among Students for having the highest GPA of 4.0 and higher. I have had my bumps through the years. I have studied Kempo Karate, Shotokan, aikido, BJJ, boxing, kickboxing and Tang Soo Do under Jake Dabis, GM Ed Parker Sr., GM Gary Garrett and Kioshi Rocknew Ryan. I am now studying under Soke Jody Perry and Master Jay Perry. I was determined I would just not give up. On top of that, I am a severe asthmatic, which made things much harder for me to accomplish; but I did it - I got mad and stayed with it no matter what. Now I use my martial arts knowledge to share with our youth how never to give up, and how they too, can become a true martial artist if they just pick the right path to humbleness and stay drug free. I had many obstacles to overcome, but determination, heart and support helped me to stay focused. I have had many goals, I have achieved almost all of them, and 18

then some. The martial arts study has given me self-confidence, courage, the utmost respect and the correct understanding of how things work growing up not only to myself, but also to many others. I never thought this all would’ve happened, but again here I am succeeding because of those who believed in me. So, a big thank you to those who have been with me on this wild journey. My utmost respect, love and support goes to my mother and dad. I started teaching at the age of 17. I have many idols, Bruce Lee, Cynthia Rothrock, The Dragon, Steven Seagal, Billy Blanks, Tony Satch Williams, Bill Wallace, Eric Lee and Larry Lamb were

just a few that inspired me. I think the most awesome feeling was growing up and now being able to communicate and saying “thank you” to these exceptional martial artists. But my number one was my mom she was a green belt under me. Besides the martial arts world, I played basketball, did speed skating, played softball and when I was young, I started playing music. I am a drummer and a piano player, and I have messed around with a guitar. Music was also second nature. I always was very active.

but that. I started breaking boards when I was 16, when I was told I couldn't break bricks because I was a girl, I took that as a challenge. That's when I started the brick breaking with my head. I got up to 10 with my head. I am a Two-time record holder in brick breaking for GSKA.

I was asked in 1999 by Big John McCarthy and Doug Guns Ekman to come train with them and prepare for the UFC. My mother started tearing up and asked not to take it that far. I just couldn't do it knowing she was that worried. So, I decided to do everything

Personal Achievements Two-time belt holder for International Martial Arts Confederation for sparring, kata, as well as a point leader, seventime belt holder for Golden State Karate Association for sparring, kata, point leader, Undefeated brick break champion. Two-time record holder in brick breaking for GSKA. I was the first within 19 years to break a record of 69 bricks in 2013. In 2014, I went back and beat my own record, breaking 100 bricks. I made history with these two breaks. 2016 Broke for Guinness book of World Records 150 bricks in 1 min and 33 seconds. I am hoping to break this record this year with 300 bricks.

MASTER GOLDBERG One must wonder what Master Goldberg, publisher and promoter of the event is thinking looking out in this vast sea of martial artists. How did it all start? Over fifty years ago Alan Goldberg set forth on a path in Martial Arts that some of us could only dream of. Master Goldberg’s early training was in the art of Shotokan Karate and he studied with Masters Manard Miner and George Cofield. He would later learn the traditional and non-traditional arts of Five Animal Kung Fu.

Sifu Lau is the disciple of famed Shaw Brothers stable, Master Jiu Wan. Sifu Lau and Master Goldberg would form a student and Master bond that has lasted over thirty years. Their friendship so close that they even spent five years living in a Shaolin Wing Chun temple with three other disciples, and Master Lau now holds the title of #1 Disciple of the Family. Master Goldberg jokes of those days saying, “Sifu Lau would wake up at 2:00 in the morning, telling his disciples it was time to train.” For Master Goldberg, it was like a dream. But sometimes woke up the next morning wondering was it or wasn’t it. “I would have lived there 30

longer with Sifu Lau, but I was due to get married soon and my wife did not agree with my continued plan of living in a temple.” (And he wonders why not…) When Sifu Lau left New York City in the early 80s, he suggested Master Goldberg train with the late Sifu Moy Yat of the Yip Man family. This would give Master Goldberg the opportunity to

Master Goldberg now teaches Wing Chun Kung Fu in the heart of Brooklyn to a small but dedicated group of students. The temple has been active for over 25 years and there have been opportunities to expand it as a business. “I have had opportunities to expand, but I am really not interested in having a large school because it loses some of the tradition and close family ties that I have built with my students,” Master Goldberg tells us. The tradition continues as three of his oldest disciples teach in different areas of the United Stated. Master Goldberg’s other notable students include actor Joe Piscopo of Saturday Night Live, Heavy-weight World Champion Dimitrius “Oak tree” Edwards who is notoriously known as the man who broke Mike Tyson’s ribs in a sparring match, and world renown orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Pearl.
