portrait sessions Your photo session is designed, first and foremost, to be as comfortable and as casual in method as possible. When you, your family, or your child is encouraged to be yourself in front of a camera, well... the pictures just make themselves. I suppose my experience and craft come into play, but really, it is hard to get a bad shot when you look like you are having fun. As parents know too well, just getting a child to a photo session clean is feat, and then getting them to pose seems almost impossible. Just know, I have my ways. It isn’t about posing, it is about doing. Your photo session with your little ones will involve a variety of games, locations, and general silliness to get your little one looking happy! Nothing cheesey, just time proven methods that result in photographable moments. When you book your Portrait Session with us, you choose the location (if you are coming up blank, I have a variety of places to recommend), and either a morning or afternoon session. Midday shoots are discouraged due to unflattering light. Shoots typically last 1.5 hours, but can go as long as 2. I always encourage creative ideas, props, outfit changes, and general thinking “out of the box.” If you need some inspiration for clothing or color options, please refer to page 13; and for tips and tricks to ensure a successful shoot, please read page 17. Finally, when you are ready to book your session, shoot me an email and I will do my best to find a time/date that accommodates your needs, jessi@jessilemayphotography.com.

what to wear?

rule #1 - look like you

...or maybe a slightly dressed up version of you. My photography style is natural portraiture, and ultimately I don't want your photos to look too forced. If you are from the more formal end of the style spectrum, own it! But if you tend to be more earthy or casual, then bare feet and jeans is probably a great choice! Think about the end product: photos hung on your wall. What do you want them to say about you? These photos (in my humble opinion) should look like the normal you, on the best, happiest day of the year. With all that said, rules are made to be broken, and I like rebels too.

super girly? totally casual?

vintage maven?

rule #2 - a good fit

This is a simple rule, but an important one. proper fitting clothing is an essential part to a good portrait. Too big: What are you hiding? Too small: Why are you living the past? What you wear, like it or not, is a communication and often times a first impression. No matter your size, nice fitting clothes (and especially pants and shoes) look classy and polished.

*Great tool - Check out the BBC’s, “W hat Not To Wear” guide to finding the best fashion items for your body shape right HERE 13

rule #3 - pick a color scheme, not one color

visit design-seeds.com for inspiration

rule #4 - think broader than one season . . . while Christmas and Easter are often favorite times of the year, they are also f leeting. My goal is for your photos to look right at home, on your walls, every day of the year.

* great tool -

www.polyvore.com, you can plan your outfits!

rule #4 - a few textures add interest

rule #5 - super busy patterns and large logos are distracting I am more interested in your face, not that you heart nike.
