I was blessed that I began my cancer saga with an early diagnosis. One of the things I remember was the security and encouragement of my Harbin Clinic surgeon, Dr. Brock, who interpreted my CAT scan to me. He took charge in such a way that I knew exactly what to expect. There was no doubt that I would trust the Harbin Clinic staff for my cancer care. I wanted my information and care to come from my doctors who knew me, my unique situation and my unique responses. I am most grateful for all the Harbin doctors, staff, nurses and support personnel for their excellence and their personal kindness.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE In the summertime, when the weather is high / You can chase right up and touch the sky / When the weather’s right— You got women, you got women on your mind / Have a drink, have a drive— Go out and see what you can find Thanks to the band Mungo Jerry for writing such an upbeat summer anthem, though I certainly don’t condone the “have a drink, have a drive” part. Ah, yes, it is summertime again and the heat is already on. Mother Nature certainly kept all of us on our toes throughout the spring with the vicious string of storms that ravaged our region. Now we can look forward to a much more predictable weather pattern: hot, hot, and hotter. It’s the time of year where I really wish I could be the trendsetter who makes Bermuda shorts and flip-flops the new business-casual. Any takers? I apologize for whining; it’s going to be hot and that’s that. But there are several positives that come with the season as well, with vacation sitting at the top of my list, and we shouldn’t forget that our region is full of fun and constructive things to do during the dog days of summer. This year, our June cover features a lovely infinity pool designed and installed by the talented team at Watters & Associates Landscape (see “The Great Outdoors…Right Next to Indoors”, pg. 26). If you don’t have one of these in your backyard just yet, I highly recommend finding some suitable body of water in which to spend your free time this summer season. Be it a lake or a cracked kiddy pool full of fresh, cool hose water, sitting next to a water source just seems to help—even if it presents little more than the illusion of refreshment. More importantly, though—at least in my view—it seems that turning one’s attention to a quality read while soaking up the rays really helps complete the experience. And, luckily for V3 readers, we have a solid lineup of features and columns this issue to hold your attention. We also welcome aboard to our respected roster of columnists Rome’s most meticulous, trendsavvy event planner and wedding guru, Holly Lynch (see Trends & Traditions: “Will & Kate Plus Fate”, pg. 30), who is sure to keep her new followers in the know as she now graces us with her presence. As always, we promise to keep things fresh and entertaining for all of our loyal readers. All we ask is that you remember to grab your copy before draping yourself across that lounge chair. We hope you enjoy.

With a fat beat, when her daddy with me / We’ll have everybody, but we do as we please / When the weather’s fine— We go fishing or go swimming in the sea / We’re always happy— Long’s we’re living in this sound philosophy Thanks again, Mungo. You really hit the nail on the head.

EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY For Dara Dangler (right) and STUDIO 124, taking killer photos is a big step forward from 'crunching numbers'

D

ara Dangler could not only have handled your finances, but those of her other “clients” (dolls and teddy bears) as well, in her perfectly functional “home office” (bedroom closet). As a child, math had always been Dara’s forte, and so the now artist/entrepreneur had always entertained dreams of growing up to be an

accountant in some lavish, big city high-rise. She would, in fact, go on to utilize her talent with numbers—first at the age of 16, through her father’s woodworking business; again at 20, as an accountant with her former husband’s family-owned construction outfit. But after overseeing the ultra highstress, multi-million dollar account for the company’s construction of Barnsley Gardens, Dara began to realize that the profession was a bit too mentally draining for her taste, and soon sought

"It's always self-gratifying to see my hard work pay off and please customers in the end." a career that would allow for greater creativity and freedom. As it turns out, she was also pregnant. After the birth of her son in 2002, she began taking photography classes in order to better capture her newborn’s most precious moments. It didn’t take long to discover that she was naturally talented behind the lens, and that camera work was something she could legitimately do for a living. At age 24, Dangler opened up her own photo lab, Photo Technix, where she offered all types of

photo processing, framing, retouching and restoration work. Her love was not in finishing photos, though, and just a few years after Photo Technix burst onto the regional photography scene, a second business, Studio 124, was born to Dara and a pair of fellow photographers at 124 South Main Street in Adairsville. After a couple of years in operation as a trio, Dangler decided to focus solely on her passion of portrait photography. She closed Photo Technix, bought out her two partners and moved Studio 124 into a larger space at 104 Public Square in Adairsville. Having been constructed more than 100 years prior, the space where she would start anew took her two months to renovate. The doors were opened to the public the first weekend of October 2009. Today, Studio 124 is home to photographic looks of all style and type. “My favorite subject to photo, by far, is newborns,” Dara says. “I don’t know if it's my motherly instinct or not, but I just love to photograph babies.” Luckily for her, sweet, cuddly, cooing infants are currently one of Studio 124’s biggest market bases, with high school senior portraits trailing closely behind. And ironically enough, second to infants, high school seniors are next on Dara's list of favorites to photograph. Perhaps this is because teens have such vibrant personalities, which, according to Dangler, is what having your photo taken is all about. “Everyone is different,” she says. “I try to capture who each person really is.” Instead of simply adorning your photos with props, Studio 124’s artist-in-chief likes to get to know a client first. She says that when she takes pictures of someone, she is often inspired by that particular person. And passion for your work, Dara says, leads to quality results. “It’s always self-gratifying to see my hard work pay off and please customers in the end.” With Adairsville being such a small town, Dangler has made a name for herself as the local “picture lady.” She takes pride in the fact that people recognize both herself and Studio 124, and notes that she takes

extra care in making sure that each client she services leaves satisfied with the finished product. As a customer of Studio 124, a subject can be sure that at the end of each session he or she will be presented with high-quality photographs—even if a sitting takes a little longer than originally planned. Dara also gifts her clients with a video slide show (complete with theme music) after each shoot. Along with pleasing clients, taking pics of precious babies and having a fun, creative career, Dangler also enjoys the flexible schedule she had longed for while slugging through the workweek as an accountant.

These days, it seems to help foster the laidback, boutique-style atmosphere at 104 Public Square. “I want my clients to feel very relaxed and comfortable when they are here,” she says. If every picture truly does tell a story, this one appears to be headed for a fairytale ending. VVV

CENTS+SENSIBILITY with J. BRYANT STEELE

THERE ARE NO FREE LUNCHES

U

nless you work in a business related to construction, building repair, tree removal, or you happen to work in a building supply business, the recent storms probably cost you dearly. At best, you had to close for days, maybe more. The state insurance commissioner has estimated insured losses, including automobiles, at $75 million. The tornado in Catoosa County reached 175 miles per hour, a vicious EF4 category (Enhanced Fujita scale), rare in Georgia, according to the National Weather Service. Tornadoes, thunderstorms and straightline winds destroyed dozens of homes and damaged hundreds more. Sixteen Georgia counties were approved for federal disaster relief. (To check on assistance for expenses not covered by insurance, whether you are a business or homeowner, go to DisasterAssistance.gov.) Unfortunately, there have been looters in the wake of the storms, and there are businesses that callously jack up the cost of gasoline or lodging following severe storm damage. There is also the aftermath of unscrupulous repair businesses that post flyers everywhere, or even go door-to-door. It is definitely a time to beware—in addition to your other worries. Unless you actually have a tree through your roof, the Georgia Insurance Information Service advises you to have an insurance adjuster climb onto your roof before a roofing contractor does.

18

vini vidi vici / v3 magazine

As victims across the South and Midwest continue to pick up the pieces from Spring 2011's deadly bout of tornadoes, the Fed struggles to keep its own roof from caving in

Particularly following a hail storm, some unscrupulous roofers will use a ballpeen hammer to simulate hail damage, according to Dave Colmans, executive director of GIIS. Don’t sign a contract on the spot; talking to your insurer first is good advice, even though contractors are required to include at least a five-day opt-out clause in the contract. Governor Nathan Deal has signed into law a bill with other protections for the insured. Roofing contractors cannot negotiate for, or in any way represent, the insured in filing a claim; they cannot offer to pay a portion of the insurance deductible as an inducement to signing a contract; and they cannot offer a discount in return for displaying advertising on the insured’s property. The Georgia Insurance Information Service Website, giis.org, is perhaps little known outside of the industry, but it is a treasure trove of information not just on insurance issues and insurance scams, but also on weather updates, including everything from severe storm warnings to drought conditions. Storms often bring about price increases in consumer goods, particularly food and gasoline. But pocketbooks are also being hit by insurers raising rates when policies come up for

renewal, as a result of an unusually high number of storm-related damage claims since roughly 2005. Insurers have been showing underwriting losses since then. The money-wise will review their policies when they come up for renewal and perhaps alter their coverage, or maybe shop around for a better deal.

STEELE'S BIZ BITS

L

et’s look at bits of the big picture and how things intertwine: The nation has reached its credit ceiling of $14.3 trillion on federal borrowing. (The debt ceiling is the legal limit on how much debt the government can accumulate.) And before you think that’s a good thing, consider that the Treasury Department can pay the government’s bills until Aug. 2. After that, the nation could default on its debts for the first time, which would threaten its credit rating and the value of the dollar. It could lead to anxiety— if not panic—in the financial sector and drive the country back into recession.

Congress could raise the debt ceiling, but the divide between the two political parties would have to be bridged. And entrenched partisanship holds up many matters, particularly fiscal matters, in Washington. But the best bet is that the debt ceiling will be raised, because losing America’s top credit rating would be financially irresponsible—just ask Greece. The difference in interest rates on government-purchased bonds can be as low as two to three percent for those with AAA ratings, and 15 percent or more for two-year bonds when the credit rating is subpar. (It’s worth noting that credit rating agencies, such as Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s, rate Georgia at AAA—and don’t take that for granted. Only a handful of states actually have the highest rating.) Speaking of bonds, the Federal Reserve will end its $600-billion government bond program in June. The Fed had bought government bonds to keep interest rates low and help prop up the economy. There are enough small signs that the country will not fall back into recession. Now the Fed must debate whether higher interest rates are needed to stave off inflation, and if businesses in turn pay more to borrow, the cost of consumer goods will go up. Here’s a twist on gasoline news: U.S.

companies sold the most goods and services in 19 years in March, with exports increasing to almost $173 million, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. But the nation’s trade deficit rose to more than $48 billion, the highest in almost a year. The main reason: higher fuel prices. But the good news, at least at the local gas pump, is that the price of crude oil has been dropping, and for gasoline-dependent businesses and consumers, that trend is revealing itself in a gradual decline in prices. Some experts are predicting that rather than gasoline rising to $4 per gallon, it could drop to $3.50 per gallon in June. (OK, that’s not really good news, but it’s better than gasoline going in the other direction.) The state also raised its sales tax on gasoline, effective May 1, whereas normally the tax rate would have been adjusted in July. The state typically makes rate adjustments every six months, but the spike in gasoline prices prompted it to move up its calibration. When the state recalculates in January, the tax rate on gasoline could go down. You could look at the state’s unemployment rate through the same rose-colored glasses, as well. The rate dropped to 9.9 percent in April, according to the latest report from the Georgia

Department of Labor. And while that is still too many unemployed to return to a sustainable economy, the state had been in double digits. Getting below 10 percent is a psychological salve, at least. It’s still going to take construction to help get out of the jobless rut, because homebuilding has a large impact on the overall economy. But in its latest report, the U.S. Commerce Department said construction of new homes fell to a rate of 523,000 houses annually. Storms and floods are not going to help the industry, either. Finally, you’ve always heard there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Turns out that maybe there’s no free app, either. The Associated Press reported recently that a 4-year-old—yes, 4—ran up $66 in charges playing “The Smurfs’ Village” on his mom’s iPad. (Apple refunded the charges after mom’s explanation.) There is a way for owners of Apple devices to block app purchases, actually: Go to the settings menu, click on the “general” button, then click on the “restrictions” option. VVV

I

t is a tradition that has lasted centuries, and one that has been preserved and strengthened by generations of storytellers and musicians. But bluegrass music, a living time capsule of backwood tales and eternal proverbs, is also a vehicle for expressing our modern-day trials and emotions. Appalachian string music, of course, derives its flavor from the legends of love, heartache, drunken rowdiness and murder that British and Irish immigrants brought with them to the New World. Many of these immigrants established their homes on what was then the western frontier, atop the mountains and low-down in the hollows of Shenandoah and Blue Ridge. Isolated both geographically and culturally, many of the traditions of the Old World remained, and many of the songs that were sung and tunes strummed saw little change as the centuries passed. A civil war had been fought and two world wars won, moving images had been broadcast across the globe, but in Appalachia, the songs, for the most part, remained the same. The great Bill Monroe is often called “The Father of Bluegrass”, as he was the man who polished up the rough edges of the original

High Strung String Band: (from left) Rubing Yen, John Mickelson, George Boggs, John Parmer and Ian Blanton

Bluegrass’ place in the modern popular canon continues to this day,

22

as new songwriters and pickers learn variations of the old British and Irish folk ballads, attempting to create wholly new compositions and styles within the genre. Here in the foothills of Appalachia, Georgia’s northern half is positively ripe with musical talent. Soul, R&B, hip-hop and rock all have roots here. But many musicians, young and old, still

look to the rolling hills for their inspiration, searching to put a new twist on a timehonored sound that feels no need to hurry. Athens, Ga.’s High Strung String Band, for one, is carrying on that mountain tradition—and adding to it, as well. The group consists of Rome natives John Parmer (guitar, vocals), George Boggs (banjo, vocals) and Ian Blanton (bass), Rubing Yen on mandolin, and John Mickelson on guitar and slide guitar. And on stage, High Strung, which formed in 2009, deals out a dizzying mix of those great standards from centuries

past and notables from the newer, more popular era. “The traditional songs just pop up from time to time when we play,” says John Parmer, “and it is a great way to really learn how to play with one another. There is a common language there, and these songs are songs that folks who play bluegrass know. You could never have played with anyone before and you can immediately fall right in together.” Yet, High Strung also has a host of original songs that more and more audiences are singing along to, many of which can be found on the band’s freshman 2010 EP, High Strung String Band, and their new live album, 29 String Fling, released in late May. Speed—as in, how fast you can pick and how fast you can fiddle—is a crucial component to bluegrass music, and is demonstrated mightily by groups like the Del McCoury Band, The Packway Handle Band, and world-renowned banjo prodigy, Bela Fleck. As for the High Stung String Band, the quintet does show off its blazing chops with delicate grandeur on its selftitled EP, but on the whole, the album taps into a more laid-back and lonesome side of the genre—thanks in part to the peppering of Mickelson’s slide guitar and the group’s super-tight harmonies. “The lap steel and slide guitar give me the freedom, as a songwriter, to write…with a little bit slower tempo and explore different themes and sounds,” Parmer explains. “Lyrically, it allows us to explore different topics.” Many of these topics include unique takes on the universal themes of love lost and love found, homesickness, and a yearning to free oneself from the mundane and get out on the road. On the song “You’re No Longer Mine”, Parmer sings: You don’t have to say that you’re gonna stay, I can tell you’re no longer mine / You no longer love me, I can see it in you’re eyes / Try to tell myself I’m wrong, but I know it’s only lies… Two songs later, on “Stay With Me”, the schizophrenic nature of love emerges with Parmer rescinding his previous statements and beginning to believe the very lies he had previously refuted: Stay with me / Stay with me tonight / Stay until the morning light... It’s a confusing push-and-pull of feelings that most of us have felt at one time or another, and High Strung uses its “lonesome” sound as a perfect vessel by which to express this side of the saga. For the past two years, High Strung String Band has been playing many of the famed venues found within the Athens and Atlanta music scenes, as well as performing gigs across the state and, increasingly, the South at large. In February, High Strung was the headlining act at the Melting Point

here are some retail spaces that beg you to enter and linger—a music store, a fine gifts shop, a jewelry store. Welcome, then, to Outdoor Living Studio, a jewel unto itself, and just in time for summer. If you’re thinking of making a general upgrade, or maybe creating a place for family and friends to lounge and enjoy a poolside cookout or a

breeze on the patio, Ed Watters has just the place for you to look around and locate your needs. Outdoor Living Studio, 111 South Broad St. in Rome, is the latest addition to Watters & Associates Landscape, which began 18 years ago and has been a mainstay in Northwest Georgia ever since. Watters even has contracts reaching down into metro Atlanta, with jobs that include traditional landscape services, hardscapes, custom pool design and installation, maintenance and irrigation. The company started its Outdoor Living Studio in November 2010, leaving its staff ample lead time to prepare for the busy spring and summer seasons. “We’re in the wheelhouse right now,” Watters says. “People are greening up their yards, and they’re starting to spend more time outside.”

“We’ve been thriving. Business has been good this year,” adds Brad Gilbert, Landscape Architect, RLA, one of Watters’s tenured professionals. Watters talks about the value of namebrand recognition and referrals. His goal

"We manage the total property, from the driveway to the swimming pool. We want to incorporate all the pieces, [to piece together] the whole puzzle, in order to create a master plan." is to be a single source for customers. “We manage the total property, from the driveway to the swimming pool. whether they have kids or pets, whatever. We strive to make that dream come true.” “That dream’s different for everyone,” Gilbert chimes in. “We look at it as a comprehensive plan to enable people to spend time outside with their families.” Watters has 20 fulltime crews, as well as numerous vendors and consultants, for his expansive landscaping business. “We like to work with architects, general contractors, interior designers, landscape architects,” Gilbert says. “It’s best (for the customer) when we’re all working together.” Here at OLS, a typical day begins with jumping jacks to loosen limbs and clear minds, then conference huddles among the architects, who “spend 80 percent of our time out of the office” starting up new installations and meeting with clients, Watters says. Still, “We can always make time for new clients” to come to the studio, says Elizabeth Ogletree, Landscape Designer, MLA. The downstairs of Outdoor Living Studio, a historic building renovated by Watters and backing up to the Etowah River, is a sparkling showroom that exudes casually posh comfort; the upstairs is a design studio with renderings of ideas that will evolve as customers consult with Watters, Gilbert and Ogletree. The layout “helps us connect with existing clients,” Gilbert says. The downstairs conference room is a world away from any sterile corporate chamber, with its artistic depictions and Brazilian cherry wood furnishing, so very smooth to the touch. The outdoor furniture is of high quality, too, and Watters demands that it be durable and capable of withstanding the elements. It includes cast aluminum by Windham (made in Georgia), the New River line which includes the Brazilian cherry wood, and

synthetic wicker furniture. There are also synthetic grasses on display, in addition to pool-related products, pavers and natural stones. Pavers can be used in sidewalks, patios, pool decks, parking courts and other outdoor areas. At large, the concept of the Outdoor Living Studio is “thinking outside of the box,” Gilbert says. “We’re trying to present in our environments a total array of options, as opposed to first going to the client’s house or office. It’s easier for them to pick from the many options they have. Then, we have built a relationship.” The options for pool designs are vast and can be customized to fit the customer’s

unique landscape and wishes. The studio’s showroom is walled with eye-catching samples of pool finishes. The floors display four lines of furniture, pottery, outdoor lighting and other accessories for outdoor rooms. (Truth be told, the accessories would look just fine indoors, as well.) Other accessories include trellises, fountains and ornamental garden accents. One type of feedback Watters receives from potential clients: I hear that y’all are really good, but expensive. To this, Watters says that management of the outside consultants is a factor in cost, but it’s also the quality of the work and the materials. “We’re going to come and put it all together in your space,” Gilbert adds. “The customer doesn’t want to have to call someone to come back and redo [an outdoor room or pool].” With shelter, patio heaters or the Lava Heat Lamp, families can enjoy outdoor rooms just like the indoors, even on chilly evenings or drizzly days. The heat lamp is powered by propane and operated by remote control, in order to provide comfortable conditions except on the coldest of days. Watters says that an outdoor room can be added at 10 percent to 20 percent of the cost of an indoor room. So, let's say that an indoor room addition might cost $50,000; an outdoor room might cost just $10,000. “It’s a great value for the dollar,” Gilbert says. And a great way to live, without really leaving home. VVV

TRENDS+TRADITIONS with HOLLY LYNCH

I

’m often asked about trends in the wedding business. What will be the hot colors for bridesmaid dresses for the next year? Or will the unity candle ever make a comeback? One of the reasons I love the wedding business is because of the trends, and their juxtaposition to the traditions that continue year after year. So it’s no surprise to anyone who knows me that I would watch the wedding of Catherine Middleton and Prince William (to be honest, I’ve already watched it three times). Of course, I was watching for a variety of professional reasons, not just personal curiosity. Being a wedding planner, the trends set by this wedding will impact my business. More importantly, however, is the message that the royal wedding sends about tradition. I’ve been studying the balance of tradition and trend. Many wedding traditions come straight from royal weddings, such as the white gown of Queen Victoria. Ironically, that dress was once considered a ‘trend.’ Now, we’re calling colored wedding gowns a trend. Many modern couples want their weddings to reflect their own personalities, but still embrace many of the traditional elements that make the wedding day romantic. The common trend toward Facebook, Twitter, email, and text message for communication rarely fits in with the romance of a mailed wedding invitation, printed in an old-fashioned manner on—

I’d sleeve can be both beautiful and modern. love to see the return of sleeves to wedding Lace has also been gaining in popularity, gowns, or at least a strap. For so many years, and I expect lace details to make an even stronger appearance in the gowns and design elements of future weddings. The lace for the royal gown was created from floral elements that were repeated on the veil, as well as along the hem and train of the gown. As a favorite florist friend of mine often says, The more you repeat an element, the more impact it has. the strapless wedding gown has ruled the You saw that same floral lace detail faisle. Many will agree that the least exciting manifest itself in the delicate flowers, the moment of any wedding day is watching a trim on the maid of honor’s gown, and bride who is not comfortable in her dress the hemlines of the young bridesmaids’ tug at the bodice throughout the evening.

dresses. The floral detail was again repeated at the reception via the designs on the cake. Although photographs haven’t been released, I expect that the same delicate flowers of the bride’s bouquet and the maids’ hairpieces were repeated at Buckingham Palace during the reception. And the flowers chosen to be replicated were all traditional to England. How grand to have a bounty of white flowers and greenery, very clean and modern, contrasting with the colorful grandeur of the ceremony and reception space. That same principal can be applied to any wedding in Northwest Georgia. The design of the maid of honor’s dress, I hope, will also become more popular. The cap sleeve and cowl neckline was a nice change from the strapless bridesmaid dresses we see so often. I don’t expect the white color to catch on, but the photos of the wedding party were very regal, with all the ladies in white and the men in military dress. Again, the clean lines of a simple white gown contrasted so nicely with the colorful military uniforms. Although the pairing is not new in England, it would be new here since most of our male wedding party members are the ones in a solid color, while the ladies are all neutral. Some of the trends that the royal wedding embraced, although not started by the couple, were exhibited in the reuse of decorative elements—a ‘green’ trend everyone in the know expects to become a tradition over time. The use of trees that can be planted in a yard is a wonderful, ecologically-sound trend. Wouldn’t it be great to ask your grandchildren “what is growing in your yard that you used at your wedding?” instead of “what was your something blue?” I also loved the donations requested by the couple in lieu of gifts. For a ‘regular’ couple, this generosity could be replicated by making a donation to a charity in honor of the guests, as opposed to providing favors. I’ve already seen this at many weddings, and I’d love to see this ‘trend’ become a ‘tradition.’ The royal couple also kept the wedding party to a small, manageable size. And the smallest children were not expected to walk unaccompanied down the very long aisle, nor were they asked to stand up front for an hour during a sacred, serious ceremony. There’s a lesson here. The most impressive moment of the royal wedding, to me, however, was the inclusion of the family in prominent ways. I’m not suggesting that all brides curtsy to their grandmother-in-laws, but wasn’t it nice to see the brother of the groom and the sister of the bride in the most important roles of maid of honor and best man? The Ballad of "PRETTY BOY" Part 2: In the Crosshairs

Text by Brian Foster+Neal Howard Photos courtesy of the U.S. Justice Dept.

Before Cass County became Bartow, before the American economy tanked faster than the Lusitania, a fair-haired child of hard-scrabble lineage was born in Adairsville, Ga. His God-given name was Charles Arthur Floyd, but the devil dubbed him “Pretty Boy”. And when all was said and done, he would brand this moniker on the American consciousness with fearless five-finger discounts, a heavy trigger finger, and unbridled bursts of hot lead from the barrel of his trademark submachine gun

A

dairsville, Ga.’s native son, Charles Arthur Floyd, was no doubt a man of boyish good looks, but the provenance of the nickname “Pretty Boy” has always been in dispute. Perhaps the stark contrast between his cherubic appearance and his violent exploits was enough for someone to jokingly refer to him as “Pretty

Boy”, or maybe it was first used as some sort of put-down. But whether the nickname came from his time spent intermingling with the criminal underworld in Kansas City, through a victim’s description to the police, or from admiring females, Charles Floyd hated his new moniker. Nevertheless, he was stuck with it, forced to see it time and again plastered on wanted

signs and newspaper articles wherever he turned. And in 1932, America was beginning to realize just how ugly “Pretty Boy” Floyd really was. By the middle of that year, Floyd was wanted for a number of murders and was a suspect in the Springfield Massacre. He had also been named Oklahoma’s Most Wanted Man, having been implicated in the murder of a police officer named Erv Kelley. Kelley, who had been appointed by Governor William Murray as a special investigator whose sole purpose was to track down Floyd, was essentially a victim of his own success. He had found Pretty Boy and his partner, George Birdwell, on the evening of April 7, 1932, and was gunned down on a dusty, rural road three miles west of the town of Bixby, Okla. Chances are, this was not Floyd’s first kill. He had been pinned for several previous slayings, including the murder of Ralph Castner, a patrolman with the Bowling Green, Ohio police department. But the death of Kelley had no doubt come at the hands of Charles Floyd, and was the only one that Pretty Boy would ever openly discuss. For much of that summer, Floyd laid low, but the media circus and manhunt that surrounded his exploits were at fever pitch. He had been injured in the shootout with Kelley, and his face was now recognized far and wide. Floyd would spend much of his time hiding out in, of all places, his brother Bradley’s home in Earlsboro, Okla. With him was Birdwell, as well as another former colleague in crime and one-time lover, Juanita Baird, who had been injured in the same shootout that ended the life of Officer Castner. How Floyd was able to go undetected by authorities during this period is a mystery. Though he supposedly did not participate, he commissioned a number of bank robberies throughout eastern Oklahoma and was in communication with a number of the area’s most wanted criminals. He visited his mother during this time, too, and reportedly attended church with her. Soon, Floyd was also approached by a reporter for the Oklahoman News by the name of Vivian Brown. Brown had heard the rumors of Pretty Boy’s Robin Hood-like legend, a bandit who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, but she was also well aware of the many deaths that had been linked to him. Floyd had hoped that meeting with her would set the record straight and inform everyday citizens that he was not the bad guy authorities and newspapers had portrayed him to be. Brown’s article was not published until after Floyd’s death, however,

and it appears to have done exactly as Floyd had hoped. Though many today still recognize Floyd as a ruthless criminal who specialized in robbery and machine-gunning, his story has nevertheless evolved him into a mythological figure, often romanticized in the same vein as Bonnie and Clyde, Billy The Kid and Jesse James. He was a rebel, a bandit, a misunderstood equalizer who killed for a good cause—this is the way he is sometimes characterized in American lore. Brown’s article perpetuated this myth. “There is much to support the picture of Floyd as a modern-day Robin Hood,” she writes. “Like the famed marauder of the English forests, he took money from those who had it—the banks—and divided the proceeds of his raids with the poor. The penniless tenant farmers kept their mouths shut, they had no scruples about taking contraband wrested from bankers.” Regarding Floyd’s murderous ways, Brown quoted Pretty Boy as having said, “I never shot at a fellow in my life unless I was forced into it by some trap being thrown to catch me, and then it was that or else.” And though some evidence points to Floyd being incredibly generous with his bounty, the manner in which he acquired these funds was often overlooked by his many admirers.

B

y the fall of 1932, Floyd had returned to robbing banks in eastern Oklahoma and Missouri. A young, master machinegunner, Adam Richetti, had now joined his crew in replacement of George Birdwell, who was killed during a holdup after a falling out with Floyd. When a number of Floyd’s associates were rounded up by authorities in the late spring of 1933, he and Richetti decided to leave Oklahoma before a similar fate—or worse—befell them. On the night of June 8, 1932, Floyd and Richetti came upon Joe Hudiberg’s farmhouse outside of Cromwell, Okla. Inside Hudiberg’s garage was a big, shiny black Pontiac. Within minutes, the duo was speeding toward Kansas City. But as they cruised north through the Missouri plains, Hudiberg’s swanky Pontiac didn’t prove to be the best escape vehicle. The car broke down near the town of Bolivar and, luckily for the two, Richetti’s brother, Joe,

Dear Sirs — I — Charles Floyd want it made known that I did not participate in the massacre of officers at Kansas City. Charles Floyd

Floyd declared himself innocent, but he carried with him a well-earned reputation. FBI and Missouri officials did not think it a coincidence that one of the country’s most wanted men, a known cop killer, would arrive in town just in time for such a slaughter. Frank Nash was one of America’s most notorious, as well as successful, bank robbers during the ’Teens, 1920s and early 1930s. Like Floyd, Nash had robbed banks throughout Oklahoma. He received a life sentence in 1913 for the murder of a fellow burglar, but in 1918, the sentence was reduced to 10 years in exchange for his service in World War I. He fought for two years in France, but failed to complete his sentence upon his return. Instead, he returned to a life of crime. Nash spent the next 12 years in and out of prision on burglary convictions. He would eventually receive a 25-year sentence and be shipped to the military prison at Leavenworth, Kan., from which he escaped in 1930. The same day that Pretty Boy Floyd was transporting his two kidnap victims to Kansas City, Frank Nash was apprehended in Hot Springs, Ark. by federal agents Joe Lackey and Frank Smith. They were accompanied by Otto Reed, the chief of

police in McAlester, Okla. They then headed north by train, with Nash in handcuffs, to Kansas City. Meanwhile, word had gotten out about Nash’s arrest. His best friend, Verne Miller, a known Chicago bank robber and hitman, had been living in Kansas City when he received the news. In response, Miller quickly put together a team of thugs to meet Nash and his captors at Union Station. When the train arrived in Kansas City, the arresting officers were met by Agents Reed Vetterli and Ray Caffery, as well as Kansas City policemen Frank Hermanson and Bill “Red” Grooms. Together, the group would transport Nash some 30 miles to Leavenworth. The officers and agents, along with Nash, got in their cars to begin the journey and, within seconds, all hell broke loose. Bryan Burroughs writes, “A fusillade of machine-gun bullets raked the car. The two police officers, Red Grooms and Frank Hermanson, jerked like marionettes, splashes of blood erupting across their chests and faces; both men were dead before they hit the ground. In the front seat, Frank Nash’s head exploded. Behind him Otto Reed’s head burst as well ... Ray Caffery was blown against the hood and crumbled to the pavement in a heap. A bullet grazed Reed

Vetterli’s right arm, and he fell beside the car. An instant later, he sprang to his feet and ran back toward the station, a spray of bullets kicking up dust behind him. In the backseat Lackey raised his shotgun, but three bullets hit him and he dropped it; still alive, he fell forward and played dead, as did Frank Smith beside him. Both men had their heads between their knees when the shootout stopped. They heard the sound of footsteps approaching. ‘Everyone’s dead here,’ a voice outside the car said.” Agent Caffery, Chief Reed, and officers Grooms and Hermanson were all dead. In the chaos, Frank Nash had been killed as well. At the time, the FBI banned its agents from carrying guns; within 24 hours of the Kansas City Massacre, that ban had been lifted by Bureau Chief J. Edgar Hoover and agents in Kansas City were sent machine guns. It was the beginning of the largest investigation and manhunt the thenfledgling FBI had ever undertaken. A number of names were discussed as potential suspects. Nash had masterminded a prison break years before for a number of convicts, including Harvey Bailey and Wilbur Underhill, and the Bureau soon theorized that the men he had helped escape had returned the favor by trying to

break him loose. Soon, Verne Miller’s name came up and they were able to trace him to the K.C. Massacre a couple of weeks later, through phone calls made after Nash’s arrest and fingerprints left at the scene. The FBI had reason to believe that he had committed the killings with the help of two individuals, but who were they? The list of possible suspects in cahoots with Miller was still pretty long—Floyd and Richetti, Bonnie and Clyde, Doc and Fred Barker, Bailey and Underhill. Bailey and Underhill knew they were suspects and soon informed police that they had actually been

apparently after Miller emphasized that there would be no gunplay involved.” With the beer bottle and LaCapra’s story in hand, Hoover needed a corroborator. After days of intense interrogation and questioning by the FBI, Miller’s girlfriend, Vi Mathias, confirmed the story and picked both Pretty Boy and Richetti out of Bureau photographs, saying that the pair had visited her and Miller’s home after the killings. Hoover announced on Oct. 10, 1934 that Miller, Floyd and Richetti were the men who had killed Frank Nash and the four law enforcement officers outside Union Station in Kansas City a year prior. With the recent death of John Dillinger in Chicago, Charles Arthur Floyd was now Public Enemy Number One.

and sent another running before his own weapon jammed, then tossed the gun and escaped back into the woods. Accounts vary as to what precisely happened over the next 48 hours, but Floyd, again on the lam, hijacked cars and evaded police roadblocks in an attempt to get to Youngstown. Melvin Purvis, the FBI’s top man in Cincinnati, was called in to hunt down Pretty Boy soon after Richetti’s identity was discovered at the Wellsville police station. Within two days of Floyd fleeing from Chief Fultz, dozens of agents arrived in the area, as well as hundreds of police. Floyd found a few hours respite at the farmhouse of Ellen Conkle, a hospitable widow who had allowed Floyd into her home when he arrived “lost” and looking for a meal. She would later admit that she had been afraid of the man, even though she was oblivious to his true identity. Floyd soon hitched a ride with Conkle’s brother-in-law, who had agreed to drive him to Clarkston. They were met at the road by Purvis, his accompanying agents, and a brigade of uniformed officers. Floyd fled, disregarding their shouts to “Stop! Halt!” as he sprinted across an open field in hopes of reaching the tree line. A bullet pierced his arm and hurtled him to the ground. The officers approached with .45s drawn and disarmed a still resistant Floyd. As he lay dying, he was questioned by Purvis and his team about the massacre in Kansas City. Accounts vary as to what his response was. Some reports have Floyd denying his role in the murders, while others attest that he refused to talk and cursed at his interrogators. Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd, dead at the age of 30, had been the most wanted criminal in America. And though his guilt in both the Springfield and Kansas City Massacres are disputed, he was certainly guilty of robbing and killing his way across the Dust Bowl and Midwest during America’s Great Depression. Perhaps Adairsville’s most famous citizen isn’t the one it is most proud of, but, nevertheless, Floyd remains a legend. A poor man’s hero who lived and fought in a much wilder time, he made his name when the lines between good guys and bad guys were not so clearly discerned amidst a population desperate to put food on the table. An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people attended his funeral in Oklahoma, and just as Floyd had vowed after he escaped prison in 1930, he never again saw the inside of a jail cell and never grew old, cementing the lasting image of himself as a “Pretty Boy” who terrorized the Great Plains, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. THE ROOD REVIEW

Instead, trust the fact that each of the books from the with MATT ROOD series on which the show is based have all found their way to the New York Times Bestseller List, and author George R.R. In terms of performance, there isn’t one lame actor in the bunch. Actually, each actor seems to have tapped into his or her character with full-on precision, though special mention should go to Peter Dinklage, who shines as the terribly misunderstood Tyrion Lannister. I then had a premonition that the ladies of the world will one day realize they don’t men to make them laugh, and that very soon we’ll have to call it quits as a sex altogether— seeing as how we can’t make new people on our own, nor muster the courage to consult a doctor for more than three visits per lifetime. Eye of the Beholder: Dissecting the Bevy of Options for Corrective Eye Surgery

Dr. Paul Harton practices at the Harbin Clinic Eye Center in Rome, in addition to several offices throughout Northwest Georgia. He performs all of the surgeries mentioned in the corresponding interview, in addition to cataract surgery. Harton is also a national course instructor for the ICL procedure, and has lectured extensively on various refractive surgery topics both in the U.S. and internationally. Free refractive surgery consultations are available by calling 706.233.8556. For more info, visit harbinclinic.com/eyecenter.

When discussing vision problems, sometimes the term “refractive error” is mentioned. What does that mean? In the normal eye, light is focused precisely onto the retina to produce clear vision. This is done by two structures, the cornea (front windshield of the eye) and the lens (inside the eye). If light is not focused sharply on the retina, a “refractive error” occurs and results in blurry vision. Refractive errors include nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Changing the shape of the cornea alters the way light is focused on the retina, making it possible to correct refractive errors.

How is the Excimer used in LASIK and PRK, and how much recovery time is needed? In 1996, the Excimer laser was approved for use in LASIK surgery in the United States. LASIK has an additional step to PRK. First a flap is created in the cornea, usually with another type of laser. This flap is laid back and the Excimer laser treatment is applied to the deeper layers of the cornea. The flap is then replaced, allowing for quicker healing. While both PRK and LASIK are very effective at correcting vision, most LASIK patients can return to work the day after surgery. PRK patients may require several days before they can function normally. With the recent addition of Intralase technology, the LASIK flap can be cut with a laser instead of a razor blade. This “All-laser” or “Bladeless” LASIK approach adds another degree of precision to this already excellent procedure. This precision, coupled with quick recovery time and the ability to correct nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness, has made LASIK easily the most popular refractive surgery procedure in the world.

When did laser surgery originate in the U.S., and how effective is it in correcting vision? In 1995, the Excimer laser was introduced, and this “cool laser” technology revolutionized cornea-based refractive surgery. The use of this laser in LASIK surgery is familiar to most, but the original use was for a procedure called Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). In a PRK procedure, the laser is applied directly to the surface of the cornea.

Is lens implant surgery an alternative option to laser surgery? Rather than reshape the natural surface of the eye, it is possible to correct vision by implanting a new lens inside the eye. The most impressive of the lens-based options is the Implantable Contact Lens, or ICL. The ICL is a powerful tool for the correction of nearsightedness. I was privileged to implant the first ICL in the state of Georgia after FDA approval, and have been an instructor at many ICL certification courses around the country.

The ICL is a very thin lens that is inserted into the eye while under minor sedation, then placed between the iris and natural lens. There are no sutures, and the ICL does not require maintenance like a regular contact lens. This procedure also does not require removal of the natural lens already present in the eye. Many nearsighted patients who are not LASIK candidates often can be corrected with the ICL. Even more impressive is the fact that the ICL can be combined with LASIK or PRK. This might be done for an extremely nearsighted person or one with significant astigmatism that cannot be corrected by the ICL alone. This combination of technologies, called “bioptics”, allows us to correct patients who would never have dreamed of having an option just a few years ago. Is there a lens-based method available for older farsighted individuals, for whom LASIK is not really on option? Yes, another lens-based surgery is called a Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE. Here, a lens is also implanted in the eye. However, while ICL surgery does not require the removal of the patient’s natural lens, in an RLE the natural lens is first removed or “exchanged” for another lens implant, as would be done in a cataract surgery. It is also possible to combine RLE with PRK or LASIK, further increasing the range of this procedure. The options can be confusing. How do I know what is best for my vision? With so many options available, patients should seek out a surgeon experienced in all procedures to [ensure] they have all options explained to them thoroughly. VVV
