J ES S I CA WO N G Portfolio
JESSICA WONG
Driven by a passion for light, water and natural materials, my work strives to explore how these elements can interplay to create finely crafted, experiential spaces for private and public use. Coupled with an acute awareness of socio-economic & environmental issues within today’s society, my architecture is one that is holistic and sensitive to the opportunities unique to its context. It focuses on the built form as a creative response to often conflicting contextual demands, an inspired intervention that enables people to connect with place.

Dimension: 7.5m x 9m
“The theatre of the city is animated through the collective actions of individuals, exchanging, signs and meanings, in dialogue and in conflict. Seeing and being seen, telling stories and enacting the core rituals of performance. In doing so citizens become fully engaged as co-performers and spectators in the theatre of social action.”
modified by the passerby’s that encounter it. Far from a serious affair, ‘The Lost Thing” seeks to bring a sense of childish whimy and wonder.
Designed as a fully demountable temporary pop up, my proposal seeks to extend from the traditional notion of the flexible black box theatre, seeing opportunity in integrating the public realm into theatre experience. In some ways resembling an oversized ‘prop’, my proposal offers a series of stages that can be appropriated, manipulated and
Structurally, the theatre will be built from bolted steel beams using an integrated Jib crane. Lightweight corrugated panels applied in various directions and clipped to the exterior, break down its scale & seeks to bring about a strange familiaty to the ‘Lost Thing’. Overall the proposal seeks to see the process of construction as part of the overall theatre experience.

DIALOG: A NEW MODE OF LIVING
Location: Port Melbourne
Program: M.Arch, Studio D
Supervisor: Hannes McNamara
Material: Dampalon, Mesh, Concrete, Plywood
Type: 80 work-living apartments
Dimension: 53 x 52m
“ The current domestic landscape is characterized by an increasing gap between, on the one hand, temporary dwellers, freelance workers, and single parents producing new forms of co-habiting, and on the other hand, the reassuring and often celebrated clichés of traditional family life.”
Spaces are imagined as conditions that can be constantly negotiated day to day, month to month and year to year.
Drawing on the ever present overlapping of production and living, ‘Dialog’ speculates on an alternate shared live-work typology. Through a careful mediation of the risks and opportunities that lie in a space where living and working occur, my project seeks to open the dialogue to reconsider the private property and the hegemony of the family as the only way to live together.

Inspired by Melbourne's laneway culture, my project ensures a nuanced approach to community whilst retaining a degree of privacy within a busy school area. It sees opportunity to introduce a vertical laneway spine in which residents are able to utlise and expand their otherwise compact living and dining room spaces. Through this, natural light and the vibrancy of shared community living is allowed to flood in from the often overlooked 'corridor' or laneway space.

The underlying awareness for rising water levels over the next 100 years provides a framework for understanding South West Rocks. Situated in northern NSW, the proposal considers a series of coastal pools, cafe, and performance space along the protected back creek.
The delicate coastal dunes that surround the site stress a solution of minimal imposition. Daily tidal changes at present foreshadow rising sea levels and inevitable flooding at 2050 and 2100. The dynamic nature of this site have been carefully considered within the new proposal.

Situated in northern NSW, the proposal considers a series of coastal pools, cafe, and performance spaces along the protected back creek. A simple and linear structure positioned inland enhances its immediate environment. One meaders through the ‘pavillion’, which at time floats lightly above and other times comfortably on the dunes, accentuating their significance and subtle changes. The open structures provide shelter but also endow a sense of awareness of ones surroundings. They embrace the vernacular outdoor lifestyle - typical to coastal Australia.
