Jesuit High School The faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued support of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout our 50 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition. The advertisements in this booklet were sold by the Jesuit Booster Club to help support the students and the programs of the school. Please patronize the businesses who generously chose to advertise in this program; they, together with loyal support of the Jesuit Booster Club are, in great part, responsible for our school’s continued development and success.

Mission Statement Jesuit High School of Sacramento is a Roman Catholic college preparatory dedicated to forming competent young men as conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others for the greater glory of God.

Policy of Non-Discrimination Jesuit High School admits students of any religion, race, color, national origin or disability to the rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, employment or other school administered programs.

Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignation values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community. Through participation in athletics at a Jesuit high school, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God: that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond self-interest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

From the President and Principal

W

elcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your enthusiasm and your generosity. Please accept our thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community. Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (We like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it all for God’s greater glory. What will we do with what we have been given? All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words, but by our works. To our student-athletes, we encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches and teachers. To our parents, coaches and teachers, we encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, we encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stand, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are. Our sports success over the years has come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder, become more skillful and give opportunity to show all who come to see our teams play what is possible when talent and desire combine in response to challenge. We welcome you and all your fans to our campus. Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. And to our JHS Booster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches. Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs. May God bless you. GO MARAUDERS!

From the Director of Athletics Dear Parents, Friends and Fans of Jesuit,

W

elcome to the 2014-2015 school year. I am looking forward to another exciting year of Jesuit Athletics and would also like to welcome the Class of 2018 to the Marauder family. I hope that many of you decide to become involved with our athletic program along with the many other incredible co-curricular opportunities offered by Jesuit High School. Last year was another successful one for Jesuit Athletics. Our varsity teams captured six Delta River League titles and three teams (Cross Country, Basketball and Tennis) won Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, while Rugby captured the 2014 Tier II National Championship in Elkhart, IN. I would like to again call your attention to the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” program, which is based on good sportsmanship. I am extremely proud of the way our school community treats both officials and our guests from other schools. It is important that we continue to model that respectful behavior for our students to witness. Furthermore, I’d like to recognize the efforts and the support of the Booster Club, especially Hugo Schmidt (President) and Jamila Masarweh (Volunteer Coordinator). Their coordination of volunteers to work at all of the home athletic events makes it possible for our coaches and staff to concentrate on the games. I urge all of you to be a part of the Jesuit Booster Club and become involved with our school’s co-curricular programs. I’d like to express my gratitude for our game staff, Tim Fleming ‘77 (Announcer), Mark Hilder ‘80 (Scoreboard Operator) and John ’70 & Ellie Meissner (Chain Gang Coordinators) for their continued support of Jesuit Football. Finally, please support our many patrons who are advertised in these pages and have signs placed at our athletic venues during our games and matches. Your sponsorship enables us to purchase many needed items for our teams and student-athletes in order to provide them with the finest equipment and facilities possible as they represent Jesuit High School through our sports programs. On behalf of our coaching staff, our Assistant Athletic Director Ross Evans, and our Administrative Assistant Athletic Director, Robin Cummings, I want to thank you for your continued support of Jesuit High School. We look forward to serving you this year and hope you enjoy the athletic experience at Jesuit. Sincerely,

Chris Fahey Director of Athletics

Our Students

A

s a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory high school, we are committed to the excellence of our broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students’ recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God in service who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice. The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

From the Booster Club President

Welcome Back Marauders!

W

elcome back, Marauders! Whoever said, “Once your son ends up in high school, you won’t ever see them again,” obviously did not get involved with their school. When your son attends Jesuit, he is not just attending a great high school; he is entering a Jesuit community that welcomes his entire family. At Jesuit, one of the ways that you, as parents, can be involved is by supporting or joining the Jesuit Boosters. Our main purpose, as Jesuit Boosters, is to enhance and boost your family’s experience at Jesuit. We “boost” the boys by running the snack bar and by providing support for concerts, plays, BBQs and banquets. Jesuit Boosters are actively boosting all aspects of school spirit. From athletics to the arts, your Jesuit Boosters are here to deliver a fulfilling high school experience for your sons and your family. Jesuit Boosters offer so many ways to enjoy the Jesuit experience with your son. Don’t be that parent that wishes they had been involved more. Get involved early so you can benefit by the memories and friends you will gain. Join us for events like the Bash+1 that welcomes in the new school year or the best crab feed in the area in January! You can volunteer to host an athlete for the Fr. Barry tournament or chaperone a dance. Jesuit Boosters offer many ways to help out in the spirit of Christian service and Jesuit pride. If you haven’t joined us, I invite you to become a Booster and start collecting those memories that will stay with you forever. God Bless! Hugo Schmidt Booster Club President

Football Preview and Coaches

J

esuit Football is very excited about the 2014 season and looks to build on the success of last year’s campaign. The Marauders return 22 lettermen from the 2013 team, including many from key positions on both sides of the line of scrimmage who have had a very productive spring and summer “off season.” The season kicks off with the high profile game at Cal Memorial Stadium against nationally ranked De La Salle of Concord and the competitive pre-season continues with games against Yuba City and Christian Brothers in the 44th Annual Holy Bowl. After a bye, Jesuit will begin competition in the grueling Delta League with games against Pleasant Grove, Davis, Elk Grove, Sheldon, Franklin, and Monterey Trail before finishing the season off against Grant. The game against Elk Grove will be played in Levi Stadium. Players and coaches in the Jesuit Football community will continue to foster a program built on the identity of the “Marauder Way;” an identity created through mental and physical toughness, unity as a group and a commitment to working hard every day. Character reflects each player’s willingness to be honest, to communicate and listen to both coaches and fellow teammates. Community is developed by gaining trust, working hard to fill a role on the team, being supportive of each other regardless of the circumstances and pride in being a Marauder. The Marauders have worked hard to challenge each other on and off the field and continue to grow as a team. Look for the Marauders to play with passion, energy, and intensity in 2014, as they represent the Jesuit community during the 50 + 1 anniversary of the school.

F

resh off a sixth place finish at the 2013 CA State Meet, the returning DII Section Champions look to repeat and improve upon their successes in the 2014 season. Graduating only two from the 2013 varsity, the Marauders return the next 15 runners from that squad. Last year’s Sophomore class ran the fastest class time in school history at the meeting of the Marauders, broke the Sophomore class records (team and individual by Sean Kurdy) at the Bronco Invitational, and placed fourth in the section, despite running their top four at the varsity level. The Freshmen class of 2017 developed well, breaking the class record (team and individual by Brendan Jones) at the Bronco Invitational and winning the section title by placing all five scorers in the top ten. The Marauders captured the 2013 Delta River League title over Sheldon for its 39th league title and the final title of the now-dissolved Delta River League. Jesuit moves into a new league, joining with 2013 D1 Section Champion Davis, Franklin, Grant, Elk Grove, Sheldon, Pleasant Grove and Monterey Trail. With Davis being the pre-season favorite for the league and section title, Jesuit checks in at number two based on preseason returnees. Junior Sean Kurdy leads the team as the top returner, running in the #2 or #3 position for most of the 2013 campaign. Kurdy was the Section runner-up in the 3200m last spring in a personal best 9:26 and is one of the top returning in the section. Junior Michael Lackner is Jesuit’s top returner from the Section Meet and was a consistent scoring member of the 2013 team. Senior Andrew Huitt returns from a stellar track season where he ran 4:33 in the 1600m. Junior Evan Cross, the Frosh-Soph league champion in the 3200m, and Junior Matthew Sickman also return from the 2014 varsity squad. Several runners will be vying for varsity positions, including Junior Kyle Guthrie, a member of the 2012 varsity squad, Junior Patrick Cummings, who sat out much of the 2013 season due to injury and Sophomore Brendan Jones, the section champion in the 800m and freshman cross country. Senior Cristian Hernandez, Junior James Wilde, and Sophomores Ben Holland, Robert Bell, Randy Stralen and Patrick Caslin are also top returners from the 2013 team. The Cross Country program boasts nine state titles, 28 section titles and two appearances at the national meet under the guidance of Head Coach Walt Lange, now in his 45th year of coaching at Jesuit. The following assistant coaches support Coach Lange: David Zielke (23rd season), Tom Witzgall ’98 (9th season) and Nick Lai (4th season). Jesuit Cross Country will kick off the 2014 season with the annual Meeting of the Marauders on Saturday, August 23rd at Granite Regional Park.

Water Polo Preview and Coaches

T

he 2013 Jesuit Water Polo team was a year of rebuilding. The Marauders went from 10-17 in 2012 to 21-10 in 2013 under first year head coach Boyd Lachance, earning a runner-up finish in the 2013 CIF final. Leading the way this season will be four highly regarded collegiate prospects: Max Merchant, starting goalkeeper, Ed Smet, one of the country’s best left handed attackers, and returning utility players National All-Americans Will Peterson and Nick Giancanelli. Complementing them will be Sophomore center Josh Orrick, who was recently named to the USA National Cadet Team. Others who will be relied upon immediately are Junior Erik Echeona and Seniors Ryan Neil and Stetson Wheeler. Jesuit is scheduling the very top teams in the state to prepare for November. The Marauders will travel to the prestigious Santa Barbara Invitational in mid September, and compete in an away game at Nor Cal #1 team Campolindo High School; and participate in the October S&R Cup in Irvine as well as the Finis Memorial State Invitational in San Jose. Additionally, Jesuit is hosting their own tournament, the Capital Classic, that will feature some of the Central Valley’s best and perennial powers from the NCS, CCS and teams from Southern California. This year is going to be a great challenge and one I’m really looking forward to. There is no doubt this team is the favorite to win CIF while also having the ability to compete with the top teams statewide and nationally.

Soccer Preview and Coaches

T

he 2014 Varsity Soccer team hopes to continue and surpass the success of last year’s squad. The 2013 squad won the Delta River League with a record of 10-0-0. This team finished the season as the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section Finalist while posting an overall record of 26-1-3. In addition, the Marauders received a NSCAA Final National #17 ranking (twice ranked #1 nationally during the season), a #12 National Ranking in the StudentSports. com National Poll, and a #2 National Ranking by MaxPreps at season’s end. This team had the most difficult schedule in the country playing competition from Portland, St. Louis, Kansas City, and the Bay Area. Six Seniors moved on to college programs including Anthony Ayala (Seattle University), Evan Barrett (UC Davis), Tucker Bone (Air Force Academy), John Bovill (St. Louis University), Kannon Kuhn (Chapman University), and Matt Nemeth (CSU Sacramento). These Seniors join a long list of Marauders actively playing at the collegiate and professional levels. This season’s team hopes to continue the Marauder tradition of excellence. The 2014 team is composed of a talented group of Seniors and Juniors boasting five returning starters and eight returning players. Three Seniors are already committed to college soccer programs or have offers. Challenges will begin early with games against talented teams including Davis, Tamalpais, University (SF), and Marin Academy (San Rafael). Jesuit will test its talents against out-of-state teams from Portland. Hopefully, with unselfish play and hard work, the 2014 team will achieve the goal of another Section title. The 2014 Junior Varsity team, both the Sophomores and Frosh, will combine efforts and continue their winning ways as they again hope to dominate non-league and league play. The JV will play with two teams – red and gold. Both teams will face tough competition in the Delta League and in very tough non-league play. The teams promise a bright future for Marauder Soccer.

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor Principles: 1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.” 2. It’s the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership - including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.” 3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible. 4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and they must conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character. 5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators. 6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules. 7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents. 8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed. 9. School Boards, superintendents, principals, school administrators and everyone involved at any level of governance in the CIF must maintain ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of CIF programs. Such individuals must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals and that the academic, social, emotional, physical and ethical wellbeing of student-athletes is always placed above desires and pressure to win. 10. All employees of member schools must be directly involved and committed to the academic success of student-athletes and the character-building goals of the school. 11. Everyone involved in competition, including parents, spectators, associated student body leaders, and all auxiliary groups have a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and to treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a special responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that their student-athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct, including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations.

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor 12. School Boards, superintendents, and school administrators of CIF member schools must ensure that coaches, whether paid or voluntary, are competent to coach. Training or experience may determine minimal competence. These competencies include basic knowledge of: 1) The character building aspects of sports, including techniques and methods of teaching and reinforcing the core values comprising sportsmanship and good character; 2) The physical capabilities and limitations of the age group coached as well as the first aid; 3) Coaching principles and the rules and strategies of the sport. 13. Because of the powerful potential of sports as a vehicle for positive personal growth, a broad spectrum of school sports experiences should be made available to all of our diverse communities. 14. To safeguard the health of athletes and the integrity of the sport, school sports program must actively prohibit the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and performance enhancing substances, as well as a demand compliance with all laws and regulations, including those related to gambling and the use of drugs. 15. Schools that offer athletic programs must safeguard the integrity of their programs. Commercial relationships should be continually monitored to ensure against inappropriate exploitation of the school’s name or reputation. There should be no undue influence of commercial interests. In addition, sports programs must be prudent, avoiding undue dependency on particular companies or sponsors. 16. The profession of coaching is a profession of teaching. In addition to teaching the mental and physical dimensions of their sport, coaches, through words and example, must also strive to build the character of their athletes by teaching them to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and good citizens.
