Fr. Barry Christmas Classic Welcome to the 41st annual Fr. Joseph Barry Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament. The tournament has a long and storied history, as you will see on the pages that follow. Listings of past champions, individual and team records and the all-tournament teams are detailed for you. Also included are profiles and rosters of the teams participating in this year’s tournament. Jesuit High School welcomes all of the visiting teams’ players, coaches and their fans. We hope that both your visit to the Jesuit High School campus in Carmichael and your Fr. Barry Christmas Classic experiences are exciting and memorable. The Jesuit High School administration, athletic department and basketball staffs are grateful for the outstanding efforts put forth by the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic committee. The committee, comprised of alumni parents, would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all of the wonderful organizations that have assisted us in presenting such an outstanding basketball tournament.

Special thanks to: • The Jesuit High School Booster Club and its members who have helped provide and serve the meals to the players and coaches, the brunch buffet after Mass and staffed the gate and concessions. • The teachers and alumni for their assistance as timekeepers and scorekeepers. • The Jesuit student body rooting section for their boisterous support as the sixth man. • The host families, parents and students of Jesuit High School who have opened their homes to our special guests. • The Hilton Sacramento-Arden West Hotel for providing accommodations to the visiting coaches and families at discounted rates. • Darlene and Jerry Skou of Awards by Kay for their generous donation of the trophies and plaques. • The families of the basketball coaching staff for their support, patience and understanding.

Dear Friends, Welcome to Jesuit High School and to the Fr. Barry Tournament, one of California’s premier high school basketball tournaments. We hope that you enjoy the competition and be assured that we are thrilled that you are with us. Father Joseph Barry, S.J., arrived soon after the opening of Jesuit High School. His love for this school was reflected in his tireless work to develop a campus worthy of the students who found themselves here daily. His love of basketball brought him to this gymnasium which bears his name regularly. And, we have to add, he was particularly pleased when “his” Marauders gained a victory on the home court. Father Joe loved competition, competition that was hard-fought and fair. But wins or losses dimmed in importance when compared to the lessons learned when talented and well-coached young people pitted themselves against equally talented opponents. Father Joe most of all believed that sports taught important lessons which carried into every part of life. We embrace Fr. Joe’s spirit in this tournament that bears his name. We encourage all of our competitors to play hard and well, and encourage our spectators and our visitors to cheer for all and to enjoy your time with us at Jesuit High School. Finally, allow us to offer a special thanks to the Jesuit High School athletic department staff and our many volunteers, particularly Dick Hamilton, Vince Madden and Steve Fahey, who have worked tirelessly to make the 2014 Fr. Barry Tournament possible. We very much appreciate your efforts on behalf of our programs. As we look forward to the celebration of Christmas, we pray that all of you may discover its true meaning, most especially in the family and friends who share your days and your dreams for a bright future. Sincerely,

Fr. David J. Suwalsky, S.J. President

Lorraine Paul Principal

Fr. Barry Christmas Classic Fans, Welcome to the 41st Annual Father Barry Christmas Classic. This year’s event is filled with talented basketball teams from throughout California. St. Mary’s of Stockton, Damien, Archbishop Mitty and Cathedral Catholic (formerly University High School, San Diego) are all past participants in the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic. We welcome St. Francis-Mountain View, Xavier of Palm Desert and Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks as first time participants. Over the years, the Fr. Barry Classic has hosted many fine teams and studentathletes in the homes of gracious parents from our school community. I would like to thank those people for their generosity and time - without their support this tournament would not be possible. Our tournament director, Dick Hamilton, has been tireless in his efforts to make this tournament one of the finest in California. I am especially grateful, as this allows me to actually be able to watch the outstanding basketball exhibited by the student-athletes participating in our Christmas Classic. Dick has also put together a crew of people, including assistant tournament director Vince Madden, who donate many hours of their time to this event, and I would like to thank them on behalf of Jesuit and our basketball program for their commitment to the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic. I would also like to acknowledge Steve Fahey, Mala Paul (and the rest of the Jesuit High School Communications Department), who have devoted many hours producing the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic program. One feature of the tournament that has received many compliments over the years is the dinner that we provide to the players, coaches, and officials each night. This could not be done without the work of the Booster Club, especially Pam and Jeff Lorek. In addition, I’d like to thank Tim Fleming (announcer), Mark Hilder and Dave Alameida (scoreboard operators) for their service on all twelve games of the tourney. Finally, I would like to thank Robin Cummings, Administrative Assistant Athletic Director, for her countless hours “behind the scenes” including coordinating the housing for our guests. The Athletic Department, basketball program, and tournament staff extend their gratitude to these volunteers. Finally, I would like to thank our school President, Fr. David Suwalsky, S.J., and our Principal, Mrs. Lorraine Paul, for their generosity in allowing our basketball program to host this event. I hope you enjoy the time you spend with us at the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic and I wish you and your families a wonderful and peaceful Christmas season. Sincerely,

Chris Fahey Director of Athletics

Fr. Joseph F. Barry, S.J., 1917 - 1987 This is the 41st year of Jesuit’s annual Christmas basketball tournament. Originally named the Christmas Classic, it was renamed the Fr. Joseph Barry Christmas Classic in 1988. Father Joseph Barry, S.J., was born and raised in San Francisco. There he attended St. Ignatius High School and later entered the Jesuit Order in 1935. Prior to coming to Jesuit High School, Fr. Barry also taught for many years at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. His contributions to Jesuit High School were impressive. Father Barry taught physics and mathematics to a generation of students. He ran the campus bookstore and was one of Jesuit athletics’ greatest supporters. He also took on the responsibility of Director of Grounds and is still largely responsible for the beauty of Jesuit’s campus today. It is estimated that he planted more than 500 trees and established a lush landscape notable for its flowering shrubs and roses. Father Barry was known to be a great sports fan and basketball was a particular favorite. He volunteered to run the clock for home basketball games and some say that that helped to keep his enthusiasm in check. Father Barry’s love for basketball led him to suggest a basketball tournament that has now become a holiday tradition. He wanted a tournament made up of Catholic schools in order to showcase their contributions to prep sports. The success of this tournament is due primarily to the efforts of Fr. Barry during its first ten years. In addition, Jesuit High School’s gymnasium was also dedicated to Fr. Joseph Barry, S.J., on the occasion of his golden Jubilee as a Jesuit in appreciation for all that he had contributed to the school since its opening in 1963.

xavier Palm Desert, ca Xavier College Preparatory, founded in 2006, is a Catholic, Jesuit high school in Palm Desert, CA. One of the newest Jesuit high schools in the country, Xavier is also a leader for the next era of Jesuit education: schools founded and run almost entirely by lay women and men. From the initial class of 48, Xavier’s population has soared to almost 600 students, with incoming freshman classes reaching approximately 140-150 students per year. Xavier students come from every religious and socioeconomic background, from all nine cities in the Coachella Valley (as well as a few foreign countries), and from more than twenty feeder schools, most of which are public. In its short history, Xavier has established an outstanding record of athletic and academic success. Its volleyball, soccer, and cross country teams have won Desert Valley League championships, and Xavier graduates now attend colleges and universities throughout the country, including USC, Georgetown, Santa Clara, Boston College, Loyola Marymount University, Stanford, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Notre Dame, Harvard, and more. A significant number of Xavier graduates are first-generation college-bound students.

22

In the spirit of the school’s patron, St. Francis Xavier, students direct thousands of hours into service projects and immersion trips. For example, students tutor and volunteer throughout the Coachella Valley, assist at Dolores Mission and Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, meet and work with communities at the U.S.-Mexico border and El Salvador, and have recently established a partnership with Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles.

DAMIEN SPARTANS la verne, CA An all-boys Archdiocesan Catholic high school, Damien’s primary mission is to teach as Jesus did. This mission, according to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, calls on faculty to integrate in their teaching the fourfold dimensions of Catholic education: message, community, worship, and service. While acknowledging the tasks of education as belonging primarily to the parents, Damien views itself as sharing the responsibility and seeks to perform its services in partnership with the parents. Damien fulfills this ministry by helping the students realize their spiritual, intellectual, moral, physical, and social potential. This ministry enables the individual to become a confident, self-disciplined Christian who actively participates in the life of the world. The total school program, especially the religion curriculum, faculty witness, retreats and liturgies, promotes the spiritual growth of Damien students. Within the Catholic tradition, students develop recognition of self-worth and the dignity of others. They learn the understanding and tolerance needed in a pluralistic society. They also become aware of their obligations to individuals and to the community through the internalization of sound values. Students find opportunities to develop their unique talents and to use those talents to assist and to enrich the lives of others. The school family lives as members of a caring Christian community in an atmosphere of mutual support and trust.

26

The faculty and staff of Damien High School provide the students with opportunities to acquire the knowledge and develop the abilities necessary to prepare for the future. The emphasis in the curriculum is college preparatory. Upon graduation, a student has acquired a broad-based knowledge of basic subject matter in required and elective courses. Beyond the subject matter, students also learn to analyze, understand and solve problems, and express their ideas in a clear and meaningful fashion. The physical and social development of a Damien student complements his spiritual and intellectual development. The program offered at Damien has at its core interscholastic sports, physical education classes, and many of the Associated Student Body club activities. The faculty encourages the students to be involved in these programs that are an important and rewarding aspect of school life. Through these programs, students have opportunities to improve their physical fitness and motor skills. They also have opportunities to develop leadership, self-discipline and a sense of good sportsmanship. Students learn tolerance and selfacceptance. They also learn to act responsibly and cooperatively. In all of its endeavors, Damien tries to meet the rightful expectations of students, parents, church, and society.
