Jesuit High School Mission Statement Jesuit High School of Sacramento is a Roman Catholic college preparatory dedicated to forming competent young men as conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others for the greater glory of God.
Policy of Non-Discrimination Jesuit High School admits students of any religion, race, color, national origin or disability to the rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, employment or other school administered programs.
Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignatian values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community. Through participation in athletics at Jesuit High School, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God; that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond self-interest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes. Jesuit 101 Enrollment: 1068 School Colors: Red and Gold School Mascot: Marauders The faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued support of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout our 53 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition.

elcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your enthusiasm and generosity. Please accept our thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community. Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (We like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it all for God’s greater glory. What will we do with what we have been given? All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words, but by our works. To our student-athletes, we encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches and teachers. To our parents, coaches and teachers, we encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, we encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stands, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are. Our sports success over the years has come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder, become more skillful and give opportunity to show all who come to see our teams play what is possible when talent and desire combine in response to challenge. We welcome you and your fans to our campus. Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. To our JHS Booster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches. Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs. May God bless you. GO MARAUDERS!

From the Athletic Director Dear Parents, Friends and Fans of Jesuit,
W
elcome to the 2016-2017 Winter Sports season, traditionally the time for Basketball and Wrestling, but this year Soccer has switched from the fall to the winter season for the first time. Our student-athletes have been working hard at practices to meet the challenges of their preseason schedules and to prepare for the always-competitive Delta League, featuring teams from Jesuit, Davis, Elk Grove, Franklin, Grant, Monterey Trail, Pleasant Grove and Sheldon high schools. I encourage all of you to enjoy this time of year and to cheer on the efforts of our young men as they represent our programs and our school throughout the season. The winter sports season promises to be an exciting one for Jesuit High School fans. The basketball team looks to go deep in the section playoffs, with many players returning for second year coach Jon Rotz ’92. They are poised from the experience of a strong run last season that ended with a onepoint loss to Berkeley in the second round of the Nor Cal Playoffs. Soccer, coming off a Sac- Joaquin Section Division I title victory over Oak Ridge in the fall of 2015, returns another strong class for legendary coach Paul Rose. Their sights are set on duplicating the magic of last year. Jesuit Wrestling and coach Tom Tirapelle are excited about the upcoming campaign, as they return numerous varsity wrestlers from last year’s team and look to strengthen team depth with many new faces this season. The ultimate goal is to send some wrestlers to represent Jesuit at the State Meet in Fresno, March 3rd and 4th. I would like to recognize the efforts and the support of the Booster Club, Kim Sax (volunteer coordinator) and Scott Sackett (President). Their coordination of volunteers to work at all of the home athletic events makes it possible for our coaches and staff to concentrate on the games. I urge all of you to be a part of the Jesuit Booster Club and become involved with our school’s co-curricular programs. Furthermore, I’d like to express my gratitude for our game staff working the scorer’s table: Tim Fleming (Announcer), Mark Hilder, Mike Fleming, and Dave Alameida (Scoreboard Operators). Please enjoy the 2016-2017 Winter Sports Program which includes individual and team pictures, rosters, and team profiles for each of our sports. I also urge you to read the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” pages within this program and follow the CIF’s guidelines and expectations for good sportsmanship. Jesuit High School is known for its incredible fan support, and I am proud of the manner in which we model true sportsmanship to the officials and our guests from other schools. Let us continue to display such behavior throughout the year. In addition, I ask that you patronize the businesses that advertise within this program. Their support is paramount to the financial support of our athletic programs at Jesuit High School. On behalf of our coaches, Assistant Athletic Director, Ross Evans, and Administrative Assistant Athletic Director, Robin Cummings, I want to thank you for your continued support of our teams, our student-athletes, and our school. We look forward to serving you this season and hope you enjoy the athletic experience at Jesuit.
Go Marauders!

Our Students
A
s a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory, we are committed to the excellence of our broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students’ recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice. The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

elcome back, Marauders, and welcome, to our new Jesuit families. The Jesuit Boosters hope that you had a great summer and that you are ready for the new school year and a fantastic line-up of fall sports and activities. When your son attends Jesuit, he is not just attending a great high school; he is entering a Jesuit community that welcomes his entire family. At Jesuit there are many ways to be involved in that community and one of the ways that you, as parents, can be involved is to support or join the Jesuit Boosters. The Boosters main purpose is to enhance and “boost” the Jesuit experience for our sons and Jesuit families. We “boost” the boys by providing support for concerts, plays, coaches’ banquets, and the snack bar during sporting events. We “boost” the parents by organizing BBQs, tailgates, and crab feeds and other events that bring alumni and families together to have fun and promote our school. From athletics to the arts, your Jesuit Boosters are here for our sons and families to make this brief high school time a fun and fulfilling experience. Jesuit Boosters offer many ways for parents to get involved and enjoy the Jesuit experience with their sons. It is never too late to join, but if you are new to Jesuit, get in the mix early and enjoy the opportunity to make new friendships and share great experiences with your sons and fellow Jesuit families. Join us for events like the “Back to School Bash” that kicks off our new school year or our famous Boosters Crab Feed. You can volunteer to host an athlete for the Fr. Barry Basketball Tournament, sell fireworks, chaperone at an overnight retreat, or help out at the fall and spring coaches’ dinners. Jesuit Boosters offer many ways to help promote the spirit of Christian service and Jesuit pride. If you haven’t joined us, I invite you to become a Booster and take advantage of the unique opportunity you have to be involved in the Jesuit High School community. Again, welcome back and God Bless! Basketball Preview and Coaches Welcome to the 2016-2017 Jesuit Basketball Season. We are off to a great start in our workouts. With an intriguing mix of youth and strong veteran leadership we have a chance to grow into something very special. As always, a tough schedule will present the team with countless opportunities to grow and compete at a high level. Our coaching staff looks forward to guiding this team to victory and continuing the honored tradition of Jesuit Basketball. The Seniors: Senior Matt Ehrlich has a proven track record of success and we will rely heavily on his ability to lead our team. Matt has worked diligently in the off season and his hard work has paid off. He will have quite a challenge this year but he is no doubt up to the task. Matt will be asked to perform at a high level everywhere on the court. He will score, distribute, rebound, defend, and lead the team through his words and his actions. Senior wing player Justin Gregg has worked hard in the off season to get stronger and has stepped into the role as one of the team’s leaders. His dedication, growth, and improvement are evident and needed to guide the younger players through this season. George Manikas and Roy Gonzales have an unconditional will to compete and their attitudes serve as reminders to everyone what true passion for the basketball looks like. George will play in the post and Roy on the wing. Kyle Hewitt is the bounce back player of the Senior class, steady and passionate about his role on the team, he always finds a way to contribute to all areas of the Marauder basketball family. The Juniors: Jake Virga brings a great shooting stroke, passing ability, aggressiveness to the rim, leadership, and athleticism to the guard position; he has worked hard and improved tremendously throughout the off-season. Chris Simpson is a great shooter from the wing spot, is rapidly improving off the bounce, and will be able to play in the post on occasion as well; Chris’ ability to knock down 3’s, lead, rebound, and defend will be keys for the team. Darin Similai will get heavy minutes in the post; he has worked hard and is rapidly getting tougher and more accomplished in all phases of the game. Nick Miller is a Junior player who loves to put his body on the line; as Nick develops, he will look to give the team a boost in the paint and on the boards. Versatility and instinct are two words that describe Dominic Wall; his understanding of the game and increasing willingness to make hustle plays are keys to the season. Junior Casey Gilles is a knockdown shooter and tireless competitor who will compete whistle to whistle. Josh Farr brings penetrating ability, toughness, speed, and a great attitude to the guard spot. Jake Malaney is a wing who can help the team on-and -off the court in a variety of ways. Jake will be asked to defend and rebound at a high level. Kobee Byrd brings toughness and a football mentality to the hardwood; he is great off the drive, can make the open jumper, and works extremely hard on the court. The Sophomore: Isaiah Rutherford is an extremely quick guard who is returning after a successful Freshman year. He gets into the lane and creates major problems for the defense, he defends well, gets to the rim, and sees the floor at a high level. He is working hard to get up to speed on the basketball court after a very successful season as tailback with the Maurader Varsity football team. This group of players are relentless, dedicated, and versatile leaders who are a key part in continuing to develop and maintain a selfless, team-first foundation throughout the program. All are extremely important to our success and will contribute in many areas on and off the court.

Soccer Preview and Coaches
T
he 2016-17 Varsity Soccer team hopes to continue the success of last year’s squad. The 2015 squad won the Delta League with a record of 13-0-1. This team finished the season as the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section Champions while posting an overall record of 24-2-1. In addition, the Marauders received a NSCAA Final National #15 ranking (twice ranked in top 10 nationally during the season), a #6 National Ranking in the TopDrawerSoccer National Poll, and a #44 National Ranking by MaxPreps at seasons end. The Marauders were ranked #1 in California. This team had one of the most difficult schedules in the country, playing competition from Portland through the Bay Area. Four Seniors moved on to college programs including Matt Glass (Harvard), Gabe McEwen (Westmont), Mitch Johnston (Irvine), and Cooper Renteria (Chico). These Seniors join a long list of more than 30 Marauders actively playing at the collegiate and professional levels. This season’s team hopes to continue the Marauder tradition of excellence. The 2016-17 team is composed of a talented group of Seniors and Juniors boasting a solid group of returning starters and contributing returning players. Three Seniors are already committed to college soccer programs or have offers. Challenges will begin early with games against talented teams including Buchanan (Clovis), University (SF), Marin Academy (San Rafael), Holy Cup rival – Christian Brothers, and neighborhood rival – Rio Americano. Hopefully, with unselfish play and hard work, the 2016-17 team will achieve the goal of another section title.

Wrestling Preview and Coaches
T
he Jesuit Wrestling Team looks to improve on a 3rd place finish in the 2015-16 Delta River League season. The stakes are higher this year as two teams from the DRL will qualify for the Section Team Dual Championship Tournament. Last year’s team champion, Elk Grove HS, returns a solid group and looks as the preseason favorite to repeat, but the second spot is up for grabs and will be contested with three or four teams battling in dual meet competition. Jesuit returns two Masters Tournament qualifiers, Senior Kyle Hagy and Junior Dylan Ford. Seniors Alex Mar, Michael Xavier, Nate Parry, Jose Maravilla, and Chris Miranda have been in the Marauder program four years. Second-year Senior Tyler Duhon is determined to wrestle his way into a varsity spot, with the entire group counted on to mentor and lead the charge for all returning underclassmen. Juniors Branden Madsen, Crispin Cabrera, Koner Maneewong, Luke Moreno, Luke Singh along with returning Sophomores Josh Bagwell, John Irwin, and Aiden Elko will get their shot contributing at the varsity level. This group shows positive signs to solidify a line-up that will be fun and exciting to watch. Twenty-five Frosh/Soph have started their quest to contribute to the Jesuit Wrestling Program. In the history of the program 13 athletes have qualified to compete at the State Championship Tournament with 8 qualifiers in the last four years. Jesuit’s first and only state place winner, Erik Medina (2014), received his 8th place award in the Rabobank Center, Bakersfield. The Jesuit coaching staff is excited to see “who’s next” and the future of the Marauder Program.

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor Principles: 1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.” 2. It’s the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership - including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.” 3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible. 4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and they must conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character. 5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators. 6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules. 7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents. 8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed. 9.
