Jesuit High School
Mission Statement Jesuit High School of Sacramento is a Roman Catholic college preparatory dedicated to forming competent young men as conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others for the greater glory of God.
Policy of Non-Discrimination Jesuit High School admits students of any religion, race, color, national origin or disability to the rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, employment or other school administered programs.
Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignatian values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community. Through participation in athletics at Jesuit High School, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the studentathlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God; that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond self-interest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

Jesuit 101 Enrollment: 1068 School Colors: Red and Gold School Mascot: Marauders The faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued support of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout our 53 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition. The advertisements in this booklet were sold to help support the students and the athletic programs of the school. Please patronize the businesses who generously chose to advertise in this program; they, together with loyal support of the Jesuit Booster Club are, in great part, responsible for our school’s continued development and success. 4
From the President and Principal
elcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of W Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your enthusiasm and
generosity. Please accept our thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community. Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (We like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it all for God’s greater glory. What will we do with what we have been given? All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words, but by our works. To our student-athletes, we encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches and teachers. To our parents, coaches and teachers, we encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, we encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stands, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are. Our sports success over the years has come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder, become more skillful and give opportunity to show all who come to see our teams play what is possible when talent and desire combine in response to challenge. We welcome you and your fans to our campus. Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. To our JHS Booster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches. Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs. May God bless you. GO MARAUDERS!

From the Director of Athletics Dear Jesuit Families, Friends & Fans: The 2016-2017 school year is here and there is so much to anticipate as we roll out another competitive group of Jesuit athletes! Now, with one year under my belt as your athletic director, I am especially looking forward to an exciting year of Jesuit Athletics, and I want to extend a warm welcome to the Class of 2020 as they join the Marauder family. It is my hope that many of you will consider participation in our athletic program along with many other co-curricular opportunities offered by Jesuit High School. The 2015-2016 athletes brought home many notable accomplishments on behalf of Jesuit Athletics, including Delta League titles in Cross Country, Soccer, Golf, Swimming, and Volleyball, as well as Sac- Joaquin Section Titles in Soccer and Cross Country and a National Runner-up finish for Rugby.

We couldn’t maintain the sports programs at Jesuit without our Booster Club. I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize the efforts of the entire board and especially, two key members: newly elected President Scott Sackett and Event Staffing Chair Kimberly Sax. The Jesuit Booster Club is vital to the function of the athletic program, and I would like to encourage all members of the Jesuit community to consider becoming involved. Special thanks go to our 201617 game day staff Tim Fleming ’77 (Announcer), Mark Hilder ‘80 (Scoreboard Operator) and John ’70 & Ellie Meissner (Chain Gang Coordinators) for their continued support of Jesuit Football. In keeping with our tradition of sportsmanship, I would also like to highlight the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” program. Our student athletes, Jesuit families, friends and fans demonstrate gracious and respectful behavior to officials and our guests from other schools at athletic events. I am proud of the way we pursue victory with honor and want to emphasize how important it is that we continue to model that respectful behavior for our students to witness. Finally, please support our many patrons who are advertised in these pages and whose signs are displayed at our athletic venues during our games and matches. Your sponsorship enables us to purchase many needed items for our teams and student-athletes in order to provide them with the finest equipment and facilities possible as they represent Jesuit through our sports programs. Thank you for your continued support of Jesuit High School. Our coaching staff (Assistant Athletic Director, Ross Evans, Administrative Assistant Athletic Director, Robin Cummings and myself) look forward to working with you to execute another exciting athletic experience at Jesuit High School. Go Marauders! Best, Gregory C. Harcos Director of Athletics

Our Students s a Jesuit, Catholic college A preparatory high school, we are committed to the excellence of our
broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students’ recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God in service who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to justice. The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

From the Booster Club President Welcome back, Marauders, and welcome, to our new Jesuit families. The Jesuit Boosters hope that you had a great summer and that you are ready for the new school year and a fantastic line-up of fall sports and activities. When your son attends Jesuit, he is not just attending a great high school; he is entering a Jesuit community that welcomes his entire family. At Jesuit there are many ways to be involved in that community and one of the ways that you, as parents, can be involved is to support or join the Jesuit Boosters. The Boosters main purpose is to enhance and “boost” the Jesuit experience for our sons and Jesuit families. We “boost” the boys by providing support for concerts, plays, coaches’ banquets, and the snack bar during sporting events. We “boost” the parents by organizing BBQs, tailgates, and crab feeds and other events that bring alumni and families together to have fun and promote our school. From athletics to the arts, your Jesuit Boosters are here for our sons and families to make this brief high school time a fun and fulfilling experience. Jesuit Boosters offer many ways for parents to get involved and enjoy the Jesuit experience with their sons. It is never too late to join but if you are new to Jesuit, get in the mix early and enjoy the opportunity to make new friendships and share great experiences with your sons and fellow Jesuit families. Join us for events like the “Back to School Bash” that kicks off our new school year or our famous Boosters Crab Feed. You can volunteer to host an athlete for the Fr. Barry Basketball Tournament, sell fireworks, chaperone at an overnight retreat, or help out at the fall and spring coaches’ dinners. Jesuit Boosters offer many ways to help promote the spirit of Christian service and Jesuit pride. If you haven’t joined us, I invite you to become a Booster and take advantage of the unique opportunity you have to be involved in the Jesuit High School community. Again, welcome back and God Bless! Scott Sackett, Booster Club President

Football Preview and Coaches
J
esuit Football looks to the 2016 season with excitement and hunger. The Jesuit Marauders return a skilled group of athletes from our 2015 Varsity Team and welcome a large and talented group of Juniors to the squad. The team looks poised to be competitive in what is arguably our toughest schedule yet. The season will kick off with a Friday evening home opener against the Granite Bay Grizzlies. The following week, Jesuit will travel to Folsom to take on the Bulldogs. The final nonleague game is the cherished and storied tradition of the 46th Annual Holy Bowl against Christian Brothers on September 10, 2016. After a bye week, Jesuit will play seven league games in the highly competitive Delta League. Our first two games will be on the road against Pleasant Grove and Davis. We return home to host Elk Grove and Sheldon and then travel to Franklin. For our two final league games, we host Monterey Trail and Grant. To prepare for this intensely competitive season, Jesuit has been working feverishly as a team in the off-season to further our commitment to each other and the Jesuit Community. The coaches and players continue to foster a football program built on the identity of the “Marauder Way.” This identity is created through mental and physical toughness, unity as a group, and a commitment to work hard every day, every play, and every down. Through the game of football, the coaching staff aims to inspire our young men to consistently be their best self. Football is the ultimate team sport and every player has a role to play on that team. It requires players to play unselfishly for their coaches and team mates. This unselfish commitment to the team creates the brotherhood of Jesuit Football that says, “you can count on me.” The 2016 Jesuit Football Program, coaching staff and players thank the Jesuit Community for its support. We appreciated the huge galley crew and fan support last year and look forward to seeing all of you in the stands again this season. Go Marauders!

Cross Country Preview and Coaches The 2016 Cross Country team returns three runners from last year’s third place state meet team. Several others had promising track seasons and should be worthy replacements for those who have graduated. Leading the Marauders will be Seniors Brendan Jones and Ben Holland. Jones recorded fine track marks of 4:18 and 9:20, while Holland had bests of 4:27 and 9:24. Seniors Robert Bell (4:46,10:05), Patrick Caslin (10:07), and Alex Tyree (4:49,10:22) are top-seven candidates as well. Also expected to contend for a top-seven spot will be juniors Jordan Rahe (4:43,9:47) and David Vincent (4:36,10:03), and Sophomores Colin Ryan (4:46,10:07), Miles Worthen (4:45,10:06), and Colin Brannan (4:47). Freshman Matthew Strangio brings a 4:42 8th grade 1600 meter time into the mix as well. The Marauders are pre-season ranked among the top three in the Sac-Joaquin Section, and among the top teams in Northern California as well. Armijo and Bella Vista are expected to provide plenty of competition for the Marauders on the Section level. The Marauders open with the annual “Meet of the Marauders” on August 20 at Hoffman Park. Their team schedule features large invitationals nearly every Saturday, including three majors: DeLaSalle on September 17, Stanford on October 1, and Clovis, October 8. The championship meets include the Delta League meet October 29 at Willow Hill, the Section championships November 12 at Willow Hill, and the State Championship meet November 28 at Woodward Park in Clovis.

Water Polo Preview and Coaches he Jesuit Water Polo team is looking forward to another highly competitive 2016 season. T The Marauders return a core group from last year’s squad including Senior starting goalie Marc Boudreaux and Senior attacker John Olsen. Head Coach Zac Koerner enters his second season leading the program and looking for big improvements from the team.
“I can’t wait for the season to get started. Our athletes have put in a lot of hard work throughout the off-season and it is going to be a lot of fun to watch them compete this fall. We are going to be a young team that will continue to get better throughout the season. “ In addition to the two Seniors, Marc Boudreaux and John Olsen, the team expects big contributions from a Junior class that got a lot of experience last season when they were Sophomores. Junior Attackers Spencer Beckwith, Luke Chandler and Drake Charamuga will play major roles for the Marauders at both ends of the pool. Sophomore Joseph Cavazos is also expected to carry a big load for the team after working his way into the starting rotation as a Freshman last season. The 2016 schedule will be another challenging slate for the team with many of the top teams in Northern and Southern California on the calendar. The Marauders will open the season travelling to the Schmitt tournament in San Jose before early season non-league contests with Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek and with Rio Americano High School. Additionally, the team will travel to the S & R Sport tournament again along with hosting the Jesuit Capital Invite and the Delong tournament in Modesto. “Every year I try to put together a really challenging schedule that will give us a chance to play against as many of the top teams as possible. This gives us the best chance to grow and improve throughout the season, individually and as a team. Our goal is always to play our best team water polo in the final stretch of the season.”

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor 1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.” 2. It is the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.” 3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible. 4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character. 5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators. 6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules. 7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents. 8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed. 9. School Boards, superintendents, principals, school administrators and everyone involved at any level of governance in the CIF must maintain ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of CIF programs. Such individuals must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals and that the academic, social, emotional, physical and ethical well-
being of student-athletes is always placed above desires and pressure to win. 10. All employees of member schools must be directly involved and committed to the academic success of student-athletes and the character-building goals of the school. 11. Everyone involved in competition, including parents, spectators, associated student body leaders, and all auxiliary groups have a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and to treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a special responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that their student-athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct, including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations. 12. School Boards, superintendents, and school administrators of CIF member schools must ensure that coaches, whether paid or voluntary, are competent to coach. Training or experience may determine minimal competence. These competencies include basic knowledge of: 1) The character building aspects of sports, including techniques and methods of teaching and reinforcing the core values comprising sportsmanship and good character; 2) The physical capabilities and limitations of the age group coached as well as the first aid; 3) Coaching principles and the rules and strategies of the sport. 13.
