Jesuit High School welcomes all of the visiting teams’ players, coaches and their fans. We hope that both your visit to the Jesuit High School campus in Carmichael and your Fr. Barry Christmas Classic experiences are exciting and memorable. The Jesuit High School administration, athletic department and basketball staffs are grateful for the outstanding efforts put forth by the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic committee. The committee, comprised of alumni parents, would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all of the wonderful organizations that have assisted us in presenting such an outstanding basketball tournament.

Special thanks to: The Jesuit High School Booster Club and its members who have helped provide and serve the meals to the players and coaches, the brunch buffet after Mass and staffed the gate and concessions. The teachers and alumni for their assistance as timekeepers and scorekeepers. The Jesuit student body rooting section for their boisterous support as the sixth man. The host families, parents and students of Jesuit High School who have opened their homes to our special guests. The Hilton Sacramento-Arden West Hotel for providing accommodations to the visiting coaches and families. Darlene and Jerry Skou of Awards by Kay for their generous donation of the trophies and plaques. The families of the basketball coaching staff for their support, patience and understanding.

Dear Friends, Welcome to Jesuit High School and to the Fr. Barry Tournament, one of California’s premier high school basketball tournaments. We hope that you enjoy the competition and be assured that we are thrilled that you are with us. Father Joseph Barry, S.J. was one of the founding fathers of Jesuit High School. His love for this school was reflected in his tireless work to develop a campus worthy of the students who found themselves here daily. His love of basketball brought him to this gymnasium which bears his name regularly. And, we have to add, he was particularly pleased when “his” Marauders gained a victory on the home court. Father Joe loved competition, competition that was hard-fought and fair. But wins or losses dimmed in importance when compared to the lessons learned when talented and well-coached young people pitted themselves against equally talented opponents. Father Joe most of all believed that sport taught important lessons which carried into every part of life. We embrace Fr. Joe’s spirit in this tournament that bears his name. We encourage all of our competitors to play hard and well, and encourage our spectators and our visitors to cheer for all and to enjoy your time with us at Jesuit High School. Finally, allow us to offer a special thanks to the Jesuit High School athletic department staff and our many volunteers, particularly Dick Hamilton, Vince Madden and Steve Fahey, who have worked tirelessly to make the 2012 Fr. Barry Tournament possible. We very much appreciate your efforts on behalf of our programs. As we look forward to the celebration of Christmas, we pray that all of you may discover its true meaning, most especially in the family and friends who share your days and your dreams for a bright future. Sincerely,

Fr. David J. Suwalsky, S.J. President

Brianna K. Latko Principal

Fr. Barry Christmas Classic Fans, Welcome to the 39th Annual Father Barry Christmas Classic. This year’s event is filled with talented basketball teams from California and Washington. Bellarmine of Tacoma, St. Joseph’s Notre Dame, Modesto Christian and St. Mary’s of Stockton are all past participants in the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic. We welcome St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo, Campolindo of Moraga and Damien of La Verne as first time participants. Over the years, the Fr. Barry Classic has hosted many fine teams and studentathletes in the homes of gracious parents from our school community. I would like to thank those people for their generosity and time, without their support this tournament would not be possible. Our tournament director, Dick Hamilton, has been tireless in his efforts to make this tournament one of the finest in California. I am especially grateful as this allows me to actually be able to watch the outstanding basketball exhibited by the student-athletes participating in our Christmas Classic. Dick has also put together a crew of people, including assistant tournament director, Vince Madden, who donate many hours of their time to this event and I would like to thank them on behalf of Jesuit and our basketball program for their commitment to the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic . I would also like to acknowledge Steve Fahey, Jordan Blair and the rest of the Jesuit High School Communications Department, who have devoted many hours producing the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic program. One feature of the tournament that has received many compliments over the years is the dinner that we provide to the players, coaches and officials each night. This could not be done without the work of the Booster Club, especially Pam and Jeff Lorek. In addition, I’d like to thank Tim Fleming (announcer), Mark Hilder (scoreboard operator) and Mike Fleming (shot clock operator) for their service on all twelve games of the tourney. Finally, I would like to thank Robin Cummings, Administrative Assistant Athletic Director, for her countless hours “behind the scenes” including coordinating the housing for our guests. The athletic department, basketball program, and tournament staff extend their gratitude to these volunteers. Finally, I would like to thank our school President, Fr. David Suwalksy S.J., and our Principal, Ms. Brianna Latko, for their generosity in allowing our basketball program to host this event. I hope you enjoy the time you spend with us at the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic and I wish you and your families a wonderful and peaceful Christmas season. Sincerely,

Fr. Joseph F. Barry, S.J., 1917 - 1987 his is the thirty-ninth year of Jesuit’s annual Christmas basketball tournament. Originally named the Christmas Classic, it was renamed the Fr. Joseph Barry Christmas Classic in 1988.

T

Father Joseph Barry, S.J. was born and raised in San Francisco. There he attended St. Ignatius High School and later entered the Jesuit Order in 1935. Prior to coming to Jesuit High School, Fr. Barry also taught for many years at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. His contributions to Jesuit High School were impressive. Father Barry taught physics and mathematics to a generation of students. He ran the campus bookstore and was one of Jesuit athletics’ greatest supporters. He also took on the responsibility of Director of Grounds and is still largely responsible for the beauty of Jesuit’s campus today. It is estimated that he planted more than 500 trees and established a lush landscape notable for its flowering shrubs and roses. Father Barry was known to be a great sports fan and basketball was a particular favorite. He volunteered to run the clock for home basketball games and some say that that helped to keep his enthusiasm in check. Father Barry’s love for basketball led him to suggest a basketball tournament that has now become a holiday classic. He wanted a tournament made up of Catholic schools in order to showcase their contributions to prep sports. The success of this tournament is due primarily to the efforts of Fr. Barry during its first ten years. In addition, Jesuit High School’s gymnasium was also dedicated to Fr. Joseph Barry, S.J. on the occasion of his golden Jubilee as a Jesuit in appreciation for all that he had contributed to the school since its opening in 1963.

Bellarmine Lions Tacoma, WA ellarmine is a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition of education. It has close ties to the Jesuit order whose inspired leaders began this enterprise in one remote building in 1928 on the present site that overlooks the city and Mt. Rainier.

B

Bellarmine moved from an all boys to a coeducational school in 1974. That year, St. Leo’s and Aquinas Academy girls’ schools joined with Bellarmine and created a consolidated Catholic high school for the Tacoma-Pierce County area. The merger was a success story. Today, Bellarmine enrolls approximately 1,000 students. They travel from as far away as Thurston, Kitsap and King counties. The school sits on 42 acres and has grown from one building to many, including a state-of-the-art library and computer facility. Solid, challenging college preparatory courses form the foundation of Bellarmine’s academic program, but students aren’t limited to the basics. A broad range of elective offerings are available. Students are also encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities, ranging from football to chess.

20

22

The convictions of Bellarmine’s curriculum carry a hope that our students will become men and women who are personally experienced in the Jesuit mode of education. Bellarmine strives to graduate students who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. Central to this experience is the sharing of the Christian elements of education with others. For this reason, education at Bellarmine is a community experience. The goal is to produce “Men and Women for and with Others.”

Our Mission and Philosophy Bellarmine’s mission is to proclaim the Gospel message within an educational community and to graduate students who are leaders in action, modeled on Christ, and committed to the transformation He envisions for the world.

Damien Spartans La Verne, CA n all-boys Archdiocesan Catholic high school, Damien’s primary mission is to teach as Jesus did. This mission, according to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, calls on faculty to integrate in their teaching the fourfold dimensions of Catholic education: message, community, worship and service. While acknowledging the tasks of education as belonging primarily to the parents, Damien views itself as sharing the responsibility and seeks to perform its services in partnership with the parents. Damien fulfills this ministry by helping the students realize their spiritual, intellectual, moral, physical and social potential. This ministry enables the individual to become a confident, self-disciplined Christian who actively participates in the life of the world.

A

The physical and social development of a Damien student complements his spiritual and intellectual development. The program offered at Damien has as its core interscholastic sports, physical education classes, and many of the Associated Student Body club activities. The faculty encourages the students to be involved in these programs that are an important and rewarding aspect of school life. Through these programs, students have opportunities to improve their physical fitness and motor skills. They also have opportunities to develop leadership, self-discipline and a sense of good sportsmanship.

24

26

Mission Statement Honoring the memory of Saint Damien de Veuster, SS.CC., Damien High School inspires in its students the commitment so well exemplified in the person of Saint Damien. The total school program promotes the development of the whole person within the Catholic tradition. Through prayer, fellowship, service, and instruction, Damien High School fosters a learning environment where students have opportunities to realize their spiritual, intellectual, moral, physical, and social potential. Students, parents, faculty, and staff join in community for the purpose of making Damien’s young men ready for the demands of college and the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Call Valley Solar today and let us help you save money by “Going Green” and supporting JHS by scheduling a Solar Energy Assessment.

I look forward to hearing from you. Brad
