W

elcome to the fortieth annual Fr. Joseph Barry Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament. The tournament has a long and storied history, as you will see on the pages that follow. Listings of past champions, individual and team records and the all-tournament teams are detailed for you. Also included are profiles and rosters of the teams participating in this year’s tournament. Jesuit High School welcomes all of the visiting teams’ players, coaches and their fans, especially those joining us this year from Xavier College of Melbourne, Australia. We hope that both your visit to the Jesuit High School campus in Carmichael and your Fr. Barry Christmas Classic experiences are exciting and memorable. The Jesuit High School administration, athletic department and basketball staffs are grateful for the outstanding efforts put forth by the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic committee. The committee, comprised of alumni parents, would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all of the wonderful organizations that have assisted us in presenting such an outstanding basketball tournament.

Special thanks to: The Jesuit High School Booster Club and its members who have helped provide and serve the meals to the players and coaches, the brunch buffet after Mass and staffed the gate and concessions. The teachers and alumni for their assistance as timekeepers and scorekeepers. The Jesuit student body rooting section for their boisterous support as the sixth man. The host families, parents and students of Jesuit High School who have opened their homes to our special guests. The Hilton Sacramento-Arden West Hotel for providing accommodations to the visiting coaches and families at discounted rates. Darlene and Jerry Skou of Awards by Kay for their generous donation of the trophies and plaques. The families of the basketball coaching staff for their support, patience and understanding.

Dear Friends, Welcome to Jesuit High School and to the Fr. Barry Tournament, one of California’s premier high school basketball tournaments. We hope that you enjoy the competition and be assured that we are thrilled that you are with us. Father Joseph Barry, S.J., arrived soon after the opening of Jesuit High School. His love for this school was reflected in his tireless work to develop a campus worthy of the students who found themselves here daily. His love of basketball brought him to this gymnasium which bears his name regularly. And, we have to add, he was particularly pleased when “his” Marauders gained a victory on the home court. Father Joe loved competition, competition that was hard-fought and fair. But wins or losses dimmed in importance when compared to the lessons learned when talented and well-coached young people pitted themselves against equally talented opponents. Father Joe most of all believed that sport taught important lessons which carried into every part of life. We embrace Fr. Joe’s spirit in this tournament that bears his name. We encourage all of our competitors to play hard and well, and encourage our spectators and our visitors to cheer for all and to enjoy your time with us at Jesuit High School. Finally, allow us to offer a special thanks to the Jesuit High School athletic department staff and our many volunteers, particularly Dick Hamilton, Vince Madden and Steve Fahey, who have worked tirelessly to make the 2013 Fr. Barry Tournament possible. We very much appreciate your efforts on behalf of our programs. As we look forward to the celebration of Christmas, we pray that all of you may discover its true meaning, most especially in the family and friends who share your days and your dreams for a bright future. Sincerely,

Fr. David J. Suwalsky, S.J. President

Lorraine Paul Principal

Fr. Barry Christmas Classic Fans, Welcome to the 40th Annual Father Barry Christmas Classic. This year’s event is filled with talented basketball teams from California, Texas and Melbourne, Australia. St. Ignatius- SF, Marin Catholic, St. Joseph’s Notre Dame and St. Mary’s of Stockton are all past participants in the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic. We welcome Rocklin, Dallas Jesuit and Xavier-Melbourne as first time participants. Over the years, the Fr. Barry Classic has hosted many fine teams and student-athletes in the homes of gracious parents from our school community. I would like to thank those people for their generosity and time, without their support this tournament would not be possible. Our tournament director, Dick Hamilton, has been tireless in his efforts to make this tournament one of the finest in California. I am especially grateful as this allows me to actually be able to watch the outstanding basketball exhibited by the student-athletes participating in our Christmas Classic. Dick has also put together a crew of people, including assistant tournament director, Vince Madden, who donate many hours of their time to this event and I would like to thank them on behalf of Jesuit and our basketball program for their commitment to the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic. I would also like to acknowledge Steve Fahey, Jordan Blair and the rest of the Jesuit High School Communications and Marketing Department, who have devoted many hours producing the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic program. One feature of the tournament that has received many compliments over the years is the dinner that we provide to the players, coaches, and officials each night. This could not be done without the work of the Booster Club, especially Pam and Jeff Lorek. In addition, I’d like to thank Tim Fleming (announcer), Mark Hilder & Dave Alameida (scoreboard operators) and Mike Fleming (shot clock operator) for their service on all twelve games of the tourney. Finally, I would like to thank Robin Cummings, Administrative Assistant Athletic Director, for her countless hours “behind the scenes” including coordinating the housing for our guests. The athletic department, basketball program, and tournament staff extend their gratitude to these volunteers. Finally, I would like to thank our school President, Fr. David Suwalsky, S.J. and our Principal, Mrs. Lorraine Paul for their generosity in allowing our basketball program to host this event. I hope you enjoy the time you spend with us at the Fr. Barry Christmas Classic and I wish you and your families a wonderful and peaceful Christmas season. Sincerely,

Chris Fahey Director of Athletics

Fr. Joseph F. Barry, S.J., 1917 - 1987

T

his is the fortieth year of Jesuit’s annual Christmas basketball tournament. Originally named the Christmas Classic, it was renamed the Fr. Joseph Barry Christmas Classic in 1988. Father Joseph Barry, S.J. was born and raised in San Francisco. There he attended St. Ignatius High School and later entered the Jesuit Order in 1935. Prior to coming to Jesuit High School, Fr. Barry also taught for many years at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. His contributions to Jesuit High School were impressive. Father Barry taught physics and mathematics to a generation of students. He ran the campus bookstore and was one of Jesuit athletics’ greatest supporters. He also took on the responsibility of Director of Grounds and is still largely responsible for the beauty of Jesuit’s campus today. It is estimated that he planted more than 500 trees and established a lush landscape notable for its flowering shrubs and roses. Father Barry was known to be a great sports fan and basketball was a particular favorite. He volunteered to run the clock for home basketball games and some say that that helped to keep his enthusiasm in check. Father Barry’s love for basketball led him to suggest a basketball tournament that has now become a holiday classic. He wanted a tournament made up of Catholic schools in order to showcase their contributions to prep sports. The success of this tournament is due primarily to the efforts of Fr. Barry during its first ten years. In addition, Jesuit High School’s gymnasium was also dedicated to Fr. Joseph Barry, S.J. on the occasion of his golden Jubilee as a Jesuit in appreciation for all that he had contributed to the school since its opening in 1963.

J

esuit College Preparatory School of Dallas (Jesuit Dallas) was founded in 1942 as a private Catholic institution for young men under the direction of the Society of Jesus. Located on a 27acre campus in North Dallas, the school provides a rigorous student-centered Catholic Jesuit education to approximately 1,000 students in grades 9-12 with an 10:1 student-teacher ratio. The faculty totals 111 professionals consisting of Jesuit priests and lay men and women. Currently, 56% of the staff holds an advanced degree. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Jesuit Dallas granted more than $1.8 million in financial assistance to 279 students, or 26%, of the student body. Jesuit Dallas students’ average SAT scores exceed the national average by more than 200 points. For each of the past 10 years, on average, seven students are recognized as National Merit Scholar Finalists, eight are National Merit Hispanic Scholars and one is a National Merit Achievement Scholar. Twelve students from the Class of 2012 were recognized as National Merit Finalists. Virtually all Jesuit Dallas graduates attend college, with 90% of those attending their first-choice school.

20

In addition to a full academic curriculum, Jesuit’s faculty and counseling staff guide students’ social, spiritual, academic and personal growth through a variety of faith formation, athletic and extracurricular activities. More than three out of every four students participates in at least one of the 45 varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams in 18 sports. When all extracurricular activities are included, the participation rate approaches 100%. Community service is a hallmark of Jesuit Dallas. Students participate in the largest, most comprehensive high school community service program in Texas and one of the largest nationwide. Jesuit students contribute more than 56,000 hours of service each year to nearly 100 agencies in the Dallas area and throughout the world. The school’s focus on formation of the whole person results in men who exemplify the ideal described in The Profile of the Graduate. The more than 8,000 graduates — Men for Others — serve as leaders in communities throughout the world.

St. Ignatius Wildcats San Francisco, CA

S

t. Ignatius was founded in 1855 by Fr. Anthony Maraschi of the Society of Jesus. The original school served students ranging from age 8 to 20 and later split into the University of San Francisco and St. Ignatius High School in the 1900s. When SI moved to its sixth site in the Sunset District in 1969, it changed its name to St. Ignatius College Preparatory; it became a coeducational school in 1989. Today, SI strives to develop young women and men of competence, conscience and compassion through an integrated program of academic, spiritual and co-curricular activities. St. Ignatius seeks to develop students to strive toward the Jesuit ideal of the magis: a thirst for the more, for the greater good, for the most courageous response to the challenges of our time in the fullest development of students’ talents and for a life-long disposition to serve. Friendly and Professional Faculty At SI you’ll find more than 120 men and women who love to teach and who have a passion for their subjects. In fact, in 2004, SI was one of 12 schools nationwide to be honored by Today’s Catholic Teacher magazine for excellence and innovation in education. College Prep Academics SI has one of the largest and most succesful Advanced Placement programs in the country. In 2010, students took 1,422 tests and passed 1,142, breaking the school record in both regards. Also, students scored more than 700 4s and 5s on these tests. This performance ranks SI among the top 150 schools in the nation. SI’s pass rate of 80.3% is 23 points higher than the national average. In the 1980s, SI was named one of the top-60 private schools among the

28

6,000 in the country. The award recognized SI’s commitment to excellence in education, supporting a diverse student body and the help it gave students through financial aid. Co-Curricular Programs From sports to fine arts, SI has it all. More than 900 students participate in 15 sports. Some teams have had remarkable success. In July 2006, the SI boys’ varisty crew, following its second national championship in a row, took first place at the Royal Henley Regatta in England for SI’s first international championship. SI students excel in both the visual and performing arts and produce quality publications, such as the school newspaper (Inside SI), the yearbook (the Ignatian) and the literary magazine (the Quill). Campus Ministry Programs Students also grow in faith and learn to work for justice through the various campus ministry programs. Nearly every Senior makes a KAIROS retreat, and many Juniors attend a summer immersion experience, working in solidarity with people in Third World nations. SI prepares students to leaders who know the value of service, empowered to make our world a better place.

Xavier Melbourne, Australia

X

avier College first opened in 1878 and has a proud history as an Australian educational institution. Xavier College is a Catholic school within the spiritual tradition of St Ignatius Loyola. The College is a member of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria. The College educates 2080 students over three campuses: Senior Campus (Kew), boys Years 9-12. Boarders are accepted from Year 9; Burke Hall (Kew), co-educational 3-year-old to Year 4, boys Years 5-8; Kostka Hall (Brighton), co-educational 3-year-old to Year 4, boys Years 5-8. As a Catholic school within the spiritual tradition of St Ignatius Loyola, Xavier College belongs to a worldwide network of Jesuit schools whose origins lie in a vision he formulated four-and-a-half centuries ago. A Jesuit education has a clear purpose: the development of a well-rounded Christian person of competence, conscience and compassion who will be of service in the world and has the generosity to make a contribution. The Senior Campus, from which the Tour players come, has expansive sporting fields overlooking the city catering for Australian Rules football, soccer, cricket and rugby. There is also a large sports pavilion for basketball, indoor cricket, swimming, triathlon and water polo as well as a well-appointed gymnasium for student and staff usage. Xavier rowers train on the nearby Yarra River which ultimately flows through the middle of the city of Melbourne.

34

The College has a proud tradition of academic, cultural and sporting achievements. On the sporting front the College can acknowledge a number of Olympians as well as numerous past and current AFL footballers. Xavier’s 2,080 students and 400 full and part-time staff all feel a strong sense of belonging to a unified school community with the same unambiguous set of Christian values and a consistent underlying philosophy of education. New students settle in very quickly at Xavier. Because boarders have extra adjustments to make, their families are given special attention as they hand their sons over to the care of the school. At all campuses, staff members are extremely approachable and interactions between staff, students and parents, as well as between the students themselves, are friendly, respectful and co-operative.
