Jesuit High School

T

he faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued support of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout the nearly 50 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition. The advertisements in this booklet were sold by the Jesuit Boosters Club to help support the students and the programs of the school. Please patronize the businesses who generously chose to advertise in this program; they, together with loyal support of the Jesuit Boosters Club, are responsible for our school’s continued development and success.

Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignation values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community. Through participation in athletics at a Jesuit high school, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God: that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond selfinterest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

From the President and Principal Dear JHS Fans,

W

elcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your enthusiasm and generosity. Please accept our thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community. Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (We like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it for God’s greater glory. What will we do with what we have been given? All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words but by our works. To our student-athletes, we encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches, and teachers. To our parents, coaches, and teachers, we encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, we encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stands, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are. Our sport successes over the years have come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder and become more skillful. We welcome you and all your fans to our campus. Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. And to our awesome JHS Booster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches. Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs. May God bless you. GO MARAUDERS!

From the Athletic Director Dear Parents, Friends and Fans of Jesuit,

W

elcome to the 2014-2015 winter sports season for Basketball and Wrestling. Our student-athletes have been working hard at practices to meet the challenges of their preseason schedules, and to prepare for the always competitive Delta League feauring teams from the following high schools: Jesuit, Davis, Elk Grove, Franklin, Grant, Monterey Trail, Pleasant Grove and Sheldon. I encourage all of you to enjoy this time of year and to cheer on the efforts of our young men as they represent our programs and our school throughout the season. The Winter Sports season promises to be an exciting one for Jesuit High School fans. The Basketball team looks to re-load after graduating several key players from a team that won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title last year. The Marauders will continue to improve throughout the season, as only four returning players (Isaiah Bailey, Malik Duffy, Austin Plaat and Ethan Pangelinan) saw regular minutes last season, while challenging for a Delta League championship and CIF Sac-Joaquin Section title. Jesuit Wrestling is excited about the 2014-2015 campaign, as they return numerous varsity wrestlers from last year’s team, and look to strengthen team depth with twenty seven wrestlers this season. Returning wrestlers; Anthony Wesley and Alex Elko (CIF California State Tourney qualifiers) will guide the Marauders through the ultra-competitive Delta League. I would also like to recognize the efforts and the support of the Booster Club, especially Jamila Masarweh and Linda Metcalf (volunteer coordinators) and Karen Barbre (Snack Bar Chair). Their coordination of volunteers to work at all of the home athletic events makes it possible for our coaches and staff to concentrate on the games. I urge all of you to be a part of the Jesuit Booster Club and become involved with our school’s co-curricular programs. Furthermore, I’d like to express my gratitude for our game staff, Tim Fleming (Announcer), Mark Hilder (Scoreboard Operator) and Dave Alameida (Shot Clock Operator). Please enjoy the 2014-2015 Winter Sports Program that includes individual and team pictures, rosters, and team profiles for each of our sports. I also urge you to read the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” pages within this program and follow the CIF’s guidelines and expectations for good sportsmanship. Jesuit High School is known for its incredible fan support, and I am proud of the manner in which we model true sportsmanship to the officials and our guests from other schools. Let us continue to display such behavior throughout the year. In addition, I ask that you patronize the businesses that advertise within this program. Their support is paramount to the financial support of our athletic programs at Jesuit High School. On behalf of our coaches, assistant athletic director, Ross Evans, and administrative assistant athletic director, Robin Cummings, I want to thank you for your continued support of our teams, our student-athletes, and our school. We look forward to serving you this season and hope you enjoy the athletic experience at Jesuit. Go Marauders!

Our Students

A

s a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory high school, we are committed to the excellence of our broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students’ recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God in service who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice. The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

From the Boosters Club President Boosting Our Marauders! Whoever said “once your son ends up in high school, you won’t ever see them again” obviously did not get involved with their school. When your son attends Jesuit, he is not just attending a great high school, he is entering a Jesuit community that welcomes his entire family. At Jesuit, one of the ways that you, as parents, can be involved is by supporting or joining the Jesuit Boosters. Our main purpose, as Jesuit Boosters, is to enhance and boost your family’s experience at Jesuit. We boost the boys by running the snack bar and by providing support for concerts, plays, BBQs and banquets. Jesuit Boosters are actively boosting all aspects of school spirit. From athletics to the arts, your Jesuit Boosters are here to deliver a fulfilling high school experience for your sons and his family. Jesuit Boosters offer so many ways to enjoy the Jesuit experience with your son. Don’t be that parent that wishes they had been more involved. Get involved early so you can benefit by the memories and friends you will gain. Join us for events like the Bash+1 that welcomes in the new school year or the best crab feed in the area in January! You can volunteer to host an athlete for the Fr. Barry tournament or chaperone a dance. Jesuit Boosters offer many ways to help out in the spirit of Christian service and Jesuit Pride. If you haven’t joined us, I invite you to become a Booster and start collecting those memories that will stay with you forever. God Bless! Hugo Smith Booster Club President

Basketball Preview and Coaches

L

ast year will be a tough one to follow, losing seven seniors from a team that won the DI Sac – Joaquin Section Championship, but early indicators have shown that the 2014-2015 Jesuit Marauders Varsity Basketball Team has the fight and drive to continue to improve and make a run at repeating. Yet it will be a process of growth and understanding. This off-season has been dedicated to revitalizing a culture of hard work and team buy-in. Only experience needs to be added to the attitudes of this young group. Senior Guard Isaiah Bailey has early on, put a lot of the burden of our success on his shoulders, having scored over thirty points three times. For us to reach our maximum potential he is going to have to work with this group of young players to develop the trust in their skills, and allow them to take some of that pressure off of his plate. Returning Junior, starter, Ethan Pangelinan, a defensive stopper last year, will be looked to increase his offensive output and continue to guard the other team’s best player. Austin Plaat, who started off and on at the point the last two years, will be needed for senior leadership, as he quarterbacks the team. Malik Duffy, has gone through the biggest transformation that we have seen from any player in this program from his freshman year to where he is now as a junior, and that hard work and dedication has really paid off going into his senior year. His added strength and skill make him a formidable post player and one that can continue to improve and put his stamp on the program. Three other seniors will be asked to contribute. Mike Beachley, an under sized banger and hard worker, Anthony Simon, a much improved wing player, and Greg Romo-Vaughn, a feisty player who seems to be in the right place all the time. They will be competing intensely to find minutes and increase their roles, as they step up for their senior year. Also competing for these minutes are juniors Cole Kelly, who played a lot of point guard last year on the JV team and brings a strong competitive spirit, Derek Cantrell, who has a strong understanding of the game and a silky shot, Mario DeLeon, who is an athletic guy with a great motor who is getting better every day, Kelly Reilly, an offensive minded guard who is continually knocking down shots, and Armoni Rivers, who may be the best of the bunch once he learns how to be consistent. This year we also have many firsts. Sophomore Ponderosa transfer Matt Ehrlich, will join us in early January, and hopefully solidify our guard rotation. We have three freshmen playing varsity as well. Kobee Byrd, an athletic guard who has proven he can defend, Darin Similai, a 6-7 post who is being groomed as the presence in the middle for the future, and Jake Virga, a heady point guard, who has already stepped in and played important minutes. All are gaining much needed experience. Hopes are that they can come in and contribute right away, giving us much needed depth and punch off of the bench. This group has many interesting pieces that the current staff must mold together into a cohesive unit that continually improves throughout the year, and makes a push in league to earn a position in the playoffs. More important than wins and losses though is that they will represent Jesuit Basketball and play hard and to the best of their ability night in and night out.

Wrestling Preview and Coaches

G

raduating five seniors and Jesuit High School’s first and only State Championship place winner Erik Medina (8th), are rebuilding from their best season in school history. The Marauders ended last season placing 7th at the Sac Joaquin Masters Tournament and 22nd at the CIF State Wrestling Championship in Bakersfield. With returning seniors Anthony Wesley (3rd at Masters; top 12 at State), Nick Dalke, Sam Nettles, Nolan Sheehan and junior Alex Elko (2nd at Masters and 2 time State qualifier) the Marauders hope to have another strong post season finish. The rest of the line up will be filled with juniors Paul Periolat, Fox Tresemer, Patrick Mastro, Michael Chappelle and Sal Ordonez. An exciting and talented group of sophomores have already shown they will be big contributors to the 2014-15 season. Alex Mar, Michael Xavier, Kyle Hagy, Julian Ochoa, along with freshmen Devon Flores and Seneca Silva are keys to the stability of the Marauder Wrestling Program. Working hard in the room are twenty seven first and second year marauders looking to contribute someday at the varsity level. The realignment into the Delta League poses a high level of competition with the future of the program looking bright. A diverse schedule will provide all of the Jesuit wrestlers an opportunity to compete and improve their skills. The Jesuit coaching staff is looking forward to the 2014-15 season.

CIF Pursuing Victory with Honor Principles: 1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.” 2. It’s the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership - including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.” 3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible. 4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and they must conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character. 5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators. 6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules. 7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents. 8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed. 9. School Boards, superintendents, principals, school administrators and everyone involved at any level of governance in the CIF must maintain ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of CIF programs. Such individuals must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals and that the academic, social, emotional, physical and ethical wellbeing of student-athletes is always placed above desires and pressured to win. 10. All employees of member schools must be directly involved and committed to the academic success of student-athletes and the character-building goals of the school. 11. Everyone involved in competition including parents, spectators, associated study body leaders, and all auxiliary groups have a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and to treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a special responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that their student-athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations.

34

36

12. School Boards, superintendents, and school administrators of CIF member schools must ensure that coaches, whether paid or voluntary, are competent to coach. Training or experience may determine minimal competence. These competencies include basic knowledge of: 1) The character building aspects of sports, including techniques and methods of teaching and reinforcing the core values comprising sportsmanship and good character; 2) The physical capabilities and limitations of the age group coached as well as the first aid; 3) Coaching principles and the rules and strategies of the sport. 13. Because of the powerful potential of sports as a vehicle for positive personal growth, a broad spectrum of school sports experiences should be made available to all of our diverse communities. 14. To safeguard the health of athletes and the integrity of the sport, school sports program must actively prohibit the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and performance enhancing substances, as well as a demand compliance with all laws and regulations, including those related to gambling and the use of drugs. 15. Schools that offer athletic programs must safeguard the integrity of their programs. Commercial relationships should be continually monitored to ensure against inappropriate exploitation of the school’s name or reputation. There should be no undue influence of commercial interests. In addition, sports programs must be prudent, avoiding undue dependency on particular companies or sponsors. 16. The profession of coaching is a profession of teaching. In addition to teaching the mental and physical dimensions of their sport, coaches, through words and example, must also strive to build the character of their athletes by teaching them to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and good citizens.
