VERTICAL FARM Spring 2010 Design Studio 5 Professor: Christian Pongratz Duration: 12 weeks Site: 510 W19th Street, New York, NY
Initially the design concept was driven by the movement of the sun and light circulation within the building to aid in day lighting requirements for farm production and comfort levels in residential spaces. The existing architectural environment gave the challenge for a form that was complex and innovative, while still remaining appropriate for functional requirements of a vertical farm and residential apartments. After a study on the sun’s circulation path, the form was twisted to receive sunlight throughout the entire building at specific times during the morning, afternoon and early evening. Hence the building was able to take full advantage of the sun’s natural light from sun rise until sun set, decreasing electrical energy consumption for the building’s performance. A structural lattice was developed to support the building entirely and eliminated the use of structural columns within the footprint, leaving the floor space free for farming and growing large trees. The lattice was derived from a study on the structural system of the John Hancock Center, focusing on the structural triangulation of steel tubing. This was then applied using reinforced concrete.

TEXAS TECH AQUATIC CENTER Project Description: Design a new permanent roof structure over the aquatic center pool area replacing the existing pneumatic roof. As a restriction the existing reinforced concrete rim is to serve as the only anchoring point, and loads must be adequately distributed to avoid intermediate columns. The notion of water movement is constant at a molecular level and at no instance will the water not be in movement. To realize this idea the structure appears to be constantly shifting from bay to bay must be implemented. The clashing of water ripples was set as a basis of form development.

MODULAR MARKET KIOSK Fall 2009 Design Studio 4 Professor: Joseph Aranha Duration: 4 weeks Site: Lubbock, Texas
Project Description: The goal was to create a modular kiosk that will serve as an icon to the city of Lubbock Texas. The modules should also be arranged on a typical 150’ x 50’ corner lot, and constructed of a steel structural frame. The concept was derived from a spacial analysis sketch of how one would interact with a kiosk which offered fresh fruits and at the same time be able to make fresh juice and provide an area to sit and rest. The amorphic form was derived as a natural style which opposes the current city transit plan of a grid system.

Art Gallery + Studio Spring 2009 Design Studio 3 Professor: Lahib Jaddo Duration: 6 weeks Site: 2702 27th Street, Lubbock TX
Project Description: Design a space for artist Lahib Jaddo that will provide an area to show and create art. The creation a space that is unique to the area and at the same time takes into consideration the existing surrounding environment was a major emphasis as the site rested on an existing residential lot.
