The Forest House is a two-storey residential project located in the Philippines. The lot is adjecent to a forest giving it a perfect view and a close relationship to nature. The most notable aspect of the house is its brise soleil. The wood slats surround almost every outer layer of the house imitating the forest that it overlooks. Besides the brise soleil feature, the house still maintains its close relationship to nature by maintaining the trees that were on the property and building the house around it. The connection to nature is not just visual in this case because there are portals that can easily remove the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. Once the boundaries are lifted, the relationship between the spaces become more apparent. The design shows how nature was used to strengthen the relationship between two spaces within the house and change the way they were meant to be used.

MALATE LEARNING CENTER AND PUBLIC PARK

The Malate Learning Center and Public Park is a shared space that would allow and encourage students from all of the educational institutions nearby to collaborate and interact with each other. Being a public park with resources such as food production and market space, this would also encourage the local community in Malate to make full use of the space. In order to combine both the educational and local community, it is important to have a space that belongs to both communities. Public school students can also make use of the learning resources provided in the space, such as computer stations, as well as the shared learning study hall. Private classrooms and meeting rooms allow more focused and small groups to interact with each other. These are also positioned away from the main road, reducing its exposure to noise and allowing a more conducive learning experience. The facade of the building also provides shelter from the noise and heat of Malate through the use of a green wall, and wood slats that highlights the programs of the park while adapting to the context of Taft Avenue.

SUBJECT:

The goal of this project was to incorporate an artist into the design of a series of art studios. For this project, it was inspired by Miya Ando’s Kumo, which primarily uses metal as a medium. Through her art, I was able to craft a minimal and peaceful concept that encourages collaboration and interaction between artists. Using Ando’s work to create studios for artists is perfect because her main goal is to create spaces for introspection and meditation. For artists to create meaningful art, it is important for them to think about their own goal and how they can create something that represents their own identity. With a space that inhabits the same goal, artists can not only have a space to create, but also to showcase their own work.

OASIS PARK SUBJECT: Architectural Design 4 SITE: Bagbaguin, Sta. Maria, Bulacan

The Oasis Park seeks to provide a green space that is focused on catering to the development of communities. The concept originated from the idea of an oasis, meaning a space of refuge, as well as a green area in an arid region. The climate in the area is dangerously hot for its users, made even worse by the lack of shading, narrow sidewalks, and obstacles from storefronts and vehicles. Oasis Park provides its users a space of refuge, not just from the climate, but also from the noise of the streets.

The Philippines is considered to be one of 18 countries that are classified as mega-biodiverse. In comparison to other countries, the Philippines even stands out due to the concentration of unique species per unit area in the world. Despite this, there aren’t plenty of spaces that showcase our biodiversity and even worse, the lack of conservation efforts continue to damage it. Incorporating a botanical garden into the airport showcases and helps further the image and identity of the Philippines as a mega-biodiverse country. For the form and aesthetics, I wanted to connect it locally since the botanical garden is already designed to represent the entire country. Based on my research, I was able to find out Pampanga’s deep relationship with biodiversity. Candaba, a city in Pampanga, houses one of the largest nature reservations in the country called Candaba Bird Sanctuary or Candaba Wetlands. Every year, during February, migratory birds flock to Candaba, attracting birdwatchers and tourists. With this in mind, I wanted to showcase this unique attraction as the inspiration for the form of the airport. Since flight is a commonality between birds and aviation, I wanted to take inspiration from the patterns and form of both local and migratory birds in order to relate the airport to its context and even raise awareness to the problems occurring in the Candaba Wetlands. I picked the Philippine Eagle as my design inspiration, not only because it is our national bird, but also to bring awareness to its conservation and status as critically endangered.

UNITY PARK SUBJECT: Architectural Design 6

The goal of the project was to create a space that addresses a spatial conflict between two groups of people. We were given the freedom to utilize fictional groups based on other forms of media. For my project, I decided to use the world of Avatar: The Legend of Korra, an animated show wherein a huge part of the population, called benders, have the abilities to control the 4 elements: Air, Water, Fire, and Earth. Based on my analysis, the source of the problem stemmed from all interaction between the two groups only being based on commerce and entertainment.

Using the Sport-for-Development Framework, I was able to create a common space for both of the users that uses sports as an incentive to showcase their abilities, encourage practice and learning of new skills, as well as sports and recreation to create bonds between the two groups. Each program within the park is adjacent to the walking path in order to combine passive participation in both recreational activities, as well as sport activities. Since most of the programs are based on sports, the site is separated into 3 levels to create a visual relationship between each space. This allows every user to participate in all of the activities regardless if they are passive or active.

Park Hyatt Clark is a high-rise 5-star hospitality project with the goal of connecting Philippine Culture into accessible, luxurious, and innovative ways to both international and local guests alike. The hospitality complex is separated into two parts; the hotel building, which has a east and west wing, and the commercial building, which houses programs such as a casino, kid’s club, museum, mall, etc. The concept takes inspiration from the form of a volcano considering Pampanga’s rich history and environmental context. The volcano is broken down into slopes and central points and translated into openings and breathing spaces like the atriums which are presents in all of the spaces. The materiality of volcanoes is also incorporated by incorporating various concrete finishes, as well as through the mud spa that utilizes lahar instead of traditional mud. Lastly, lush greenery is incorporated to represent the revitalization of the environment after volcanic Inactivity.collaboration with: Janika Santos and Jasmin Garcia PARK HYATT CLARK SUBJECT: Architectural Design 7 SITE: Clark Freeport Zone, Mabalacat, Pampanga

The 2-Storey Residential Project is a 3-bedroom house with a modern industrial style. The ground floor was designed to have an open floor plan in order to maximize the 110sqm usable floor area. The open floor plan was also designed in consideration of the lifestyle and activities of the owners, such as hosting events and other family-related activities. The living space has a clear visual relationship all the way to the lanai, creating an indoor-outdoor experience that further expands the space. Another feature of the house is the floating stairs, which blends metal and wood, while allowing the morning sun to filter in through the large corner window in between the steps. The interior of the space was also designed according to the owners’ taste, using a monochromatic palette while incorporating potted plants and wood as a way to add color to the spaces.
