Almost half (49%) of consumers believe greater collaboration between local councils, property developers and social housing associations is critical if the UK is to build the right mix of properties in future.

Collaboration critical if the right mix of homes are to be built, say consumers That’s according to a research report published by Eurocell plc, the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor and recycler of PVC-U window, door, conservatory and roofline systems. Other factors identified by respondents as critical to ensuring the right mix of homes is built included providing more opportunities for public consultation during planning decisions (35%), more powers being given to local planning authorities for better local oversight (29%) and more strategic leadership at a national level (21%). The findings are part of a report by Eurocell that explores how the communities of the future may look. It includes insights from five architects from practices BDP, Stanton Williams, TOWN and Urbanist Architecture. When asked about the current mix of homes being built, half of the 1,000 respondents reported that they felt not enough affordable

homes for first time buyers were being built, while an almost identical number (49%) said they believed not enough social housing was being built. This fell to 31% when asked about the amount of private rental (PRS) options being built, while 37% said that not enough homes in general were being built. As a result, two fifths of respondents, who were equally split between private renters, home owners and social housing tenants, said that PRS, social housing and homes to buy should be of equal priority as more homes were built. However, 28% identified social housing as the priority, 17% said homes to buy and 10% said PRS options should be the priority. Analysing the findings, Doriano Chiarparin, architect at Stanton Williams, commented: “Unless there is a push towards more social and affordable housing in city centres, land values alone tend to create socially segregated cities. In any productive

environment, you need different levels of skill, different types of people and levels of affordability – so there definitely needs to be more support towards affordable residential and social housing in order to keep cities working.” The public’s view on their preferred housing mix for the communities of the future certainly provides food for thought. The UK has typically been a nation of aspiring property owners. However, these findings suggest that there could be a shift towards more continental attitudes towards homeownership where renting is far more common. As the construction sector continues to design, plan and build the communities of the future serious consideration will need to be given towards this issue to ensure that the needs of consumers are being met. In 1999, there was a total asbestos ban in the UK, but the deadly building material is still claiming the lives of more than 5000 people every year.

Additionally, it may also be present in premises soils and surrounding grounds.

Companies advised to check paperwork on used forklifts CFTS explains why employers should demand to see a Thorough Examination Report Companies purchasing or hiring used forklift trucks are being urged to make sure that they see a valid Thorough Examination Report for every machine they bring on site. “Any piece of materials handling equipment must be fit for purpose and not pose a risk to health and safety,” said Geoff Martin, Chairman of CFTS — the body behind a UK national standard for the Thorough Examination of lift trucks. “A Thorough Examination Report will show you that the truck has been assessed and whether there are any faults on it. Without the Report, you have no assurance of the truck’s condition.”

It is a legal requirement that forklift trucks receive a Thorough Examination at least once every 12 months. Employers have a responsibility to ensure a truck has valid documentation when taking

possession under any kind of lease, hire or loan agreement. “Insisting on checking the Thorough Examination Report when you get a truck is a sensible thing to do as it gives you peace of mind,” said Mr Martin. “More importantly, you are fulfilling your legal obligation to your employees to provide safe equipment. If you are investigated by the HSE and are deemed to be acting negligently then you could personally face a significant fine or even prison; and will shoulder the responsibility and guilt if one of your staff is injured.” Designed specifically for lift trucks and based on HSE guidance, a CFTS Thorough Examination embraces all specified requirements of LOLER and PUWER regulations, plus a 34-point inspection of forklift attachments. It can be

applied to a wide range of vehicles, including counterbalance trucks, telehandlers, rough terrain trucks, man-up models and reach trucks, and certifies that they work in accordance with legal standards. Mr Martin added: “All our CFTSaccredited companies must provide an up-to-date Thorough Examination Report with their trucks, in compliance with the law. If you are in any doubt about the inspection status of a used truck that you have purchased or hired, I would recommend contacting your local CFTS member to arrange a Thorough Examination.” CFTS established a national standard for Thorough Examinations in the UK forklift truck industry. As the nation declutters post Christmas Veolia, the UK’s leading resource management company, is calling on the public to reclaim the value of batteries and recycle them properly to prevent fires but also preserve valuable resources. Found in a number of consumer gadgets and more and more household items, lithium ion batteries can become damaged in transit or by handling them and potentially cause fires when they are in flammable wastes (paper, plastics). Fires in waste vehicles are up by 37.5% since 2017. One of the biggest culprits is from Lithium-ion batteries which when thrown away and damaged by the vehicles compactor can set alight. The research shows that people are unaware of the consequences of damaged Lithium-ion batteries, and perhaps also the benefits of recycling them. All over the UK Lithium-ion fires are igniting great issues, with recycling and waste plants also suffering with more than 300 fires a year. Fresh YouGov research, on behalf of Veolia, highlighted that just over half of the public always remove batteries when disposing of their old electronics. Removing batteries from electronic devices and placing them in special disposal containers, such as those available at Veolia Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs), is the key to ensure that they are safely and carefully recycled in the correct facilities.

How Houses Have Changed Over the Past 100 Years There’s no place like home, as the saying goes. But what makes an ideal home can be quite personal. The wide variety of houses available today in terms of design and architecture is a reflection of the huge shift in how the general population live. We’re not just talking about the caves our ancient ancestors used to live in, but just how much has changed over the last century. Over the past 100 years, there have been huge changes in how houses are designed and built, from the introduction of indoor plumbing to luxurious extravagances like stained glass windows. There has also been a huge change in the construction industry as a whole, which has affected housing for everyone. Join us as we take a journey through how homes have changed over the last century, explained by the experts at Build-Zone.

1901 The turn of the century saw the end of the Victorian era. This meant that many of the homes in the early 1900s were Victorian style. Railway travel became more accessible, while patterned bricks and roofing tiles became popular. During this time, it was common for there to be a fireplace in every room to keep the house warm, while stained glass windows and ornate ‘gable’ trim also became fashionable. More and more homes were also built with the addition of front porches. This ranged from fully enclosed concrete designs to partial coverings. They are still seen on homes built today. But, one of the most revolutionary changes to houses during this era was the introduction of indoor plumbing. Richer households even had indoor flushing toilets, rather than the traditional outhouses. This was not a requirement for poorer houses, and poor/affluent houses had different regulations back then.

1901-1918 Following the Victorian era came the Edwardian period, which brought different things to houses and the world of construction. The number of rooms in houses began to decline, but the rooms that were constructed were built to be more open and airy. Porches continued to be an important feature of a house, showing status and wealth. The very upper classes had large and opulent porches. The simpler design is matched with wide hallways, bigger windows, and simple interior features. This roomier design was achievable because these homes were often built in the suburbs, rather than inside cities. Arguably the most defining factor in Edwardian architecture was the desire to add handmade touches to the home, in response to the mass production seen in the Victorian era.

Post WW1 Up until 1918, the difference between living standards for the rich and the poor was vast. The class divide resulted in huge differences in housing, but, after WW1, the government made its first real attempt at restricting the gap between how the classes live. With the war, came the reminder of the value of human life, sparking the ‘Addison Act’ which was the beginning of what we know today as council housing. The proposed houses were to have a parlour, living room and scullery. This age set in motion the right to access housing for all.

1930s In 1922, King Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered, and this, in turn, inspired the art deco style which echoed through to the design of houses at this time. New materials became more commonplace in house building, such as concrete and steel. This was an important era for houses because it’s when boxy semi-detached houses became very popular. It’s one of the most common architectural styles you see in Britain today. The semi-detached homes were designed with curved bay windows and hipped roofs. Another particularly important part of the 1930s was the introduction of the precursor to the Structural Warranty. It was brought about to combat the lesser building standards of the post-war era. This was a revelation, and an invention which has been developed into the structural warranties we see today from companies like Build-Zone, providing comprehensive cover to housing developers and homeowners.

Post WW2 Just like after the first world war, the postWW2 era brought a resolve to build affordable housing for all. There were also lots of houses to be rebuilt. One of the most popular styles of housing of this time was ‘Airey Houses’, which were prefabricated buildings that could be built quickly, as the main material was concrete slabs. But, this choice of material makes these types of houses difficult to heat - leading some councils to add more insulation in later years. During this period, people also preferred their houses to be detached or semi-detached, rather than terraced.

The Building Regulations Act 1965 Change was afoot in the 1960s, as buildings were finally adapting to the times. To improve the standard of buildings throughout England and Wales, the first set of national standards were introduced in the Building Regulations Act of 1965. These standards defined what qualified as building work and the notification procedure that must be followed when starting, carrying out and completing building work.

It also outlined the structures that were exempt from the regulations, such as temporary structures, as well as requirements for specific aspects for building design. This regulation ensured that a proper procedure was followed when building a structure, increasing the quality of buildings throughout England and Wales. In other words, the Building Regulations Act was the first introduction of the 10-year structural warranty, something in which Build-Zone has offered to UK clients since 2003.

Housing Boom The popularity of terraced houses resurfaced during this time, as well as high-rise buildings. This was likely due to the fact that there was still a large amount of housing needed after the war. The terraced houses were thought to be more modern and radically new, reaching their peak during the 70s. Although terraced houses were experiencing a resurgence in popularity, the previously mentioned high-rise buildings were replacing some of them. In fact, the demolition of seemingly outdated terraced housing became an issue in some areas, such as Leeds. Residents were against the demolition of back-to-back housing, claiming they were a great fit for older people or those with a low income. The Building Act 1984 Two fundamental changes were made to the Building Regulations Act, which ultimately changed the industry. Functional performance standards were introduced, set in terms of what was adequate, reasonable or appropriate, supported by statutory guidance in the Approved Documents. Competition was promoted within the building control sector through the addition of private sector approved inspectors. (Such as Build-Zone.) As a result, standards became flexible and supported innovation. This increased the efficiency of the construction industry, while also maintaining the quality that the original act intended. Lenders also started requiring structural warranties to protect investments.

Modernisation in the 90s The 1990s came with the need for a modern version of Victorian developments, which saw the trend for builds that were defined by their mock timber framing, rendered walls and cottage features. Unfortunately, this housing development was stifled by the recession in the 90s, and it only recovered properly once the 90s ended. This recession saw house prices plummet, but that didn’t stop other styles, such as postmodernism, from flourishing.

Housing Today The houses of today display that modern architecture is on the rise. You’ll see an array of housing styles from modern developments with thatched roofs to sustainable, environmentally friendly builds. So, the past 100 years has seen a lot of change in the housing industry and it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for construction in the years to come.

The symbiosis of environment and experience

The push for credits BREEAM and green building certifications increasingly characterise our spaces - how they’re designed, built and function. These programmes are characterised by credit systems. That’s all that separates, for example, a BREEAM Outstanding project from one that is Good. Across every category, from energy and innovation to wellbeing and waste, there is a continual push for credits at every stage of the design and build process. Here, the ceiling contributes again: visual, acoustic and thermal comfort, the minimisation of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), recycling and hygiene - all play their part in securing credits. This essentially improves the experience of the environment for everyone involved.

In environments like hospitals, schools and public or retail spaces, bacteria and infections can also present risks. The use of passive inhibitors offers a first level of protection as well as contributing to the greater technical performance of a space. But over and above this, by inhibiting the growth and spread of bacteria, they enhance the experience of a space. It’s another example of how the technical performance behind a space can contribute to the experiential factors in people’s minds. The experience economy coincides with a growing trend for responsible consumerism; for

User-centred design and keeping wellbeing front of mind are essential to creating great experiences. Just think about retail environments: supermarkets undergo regular in-store reshuffles as they seek to improve not simply the environment but the experience. By doing so, they transform these hubs into desirable destinations. The same applies for work environments and hospitals that are rated for comfort as much as capability. Ultimately, every space is a shop window - how it appears, how it sounds, how it feels and how it performs, its impact on our planet, and its potential for future generations. All of this combines into how a space becomes an experience. And with this in mind, is how we need to design.

Behind the experience Designers need to get the fundamentals right to score the essential points needed to create a great experience. Safety and hygiene are two examples. In terms of safety, ceiling solutions must conform to all relevant fire resistance/reaction standards. Equally, the use of ‘anti-seismic’ solutions adds reassurance to projects in earthquake areas. These features do far more than simply safeguard lives. They also add reassurance to the overall experience.

Schöck Combar reinforcement for Eurotunnel power delivery

Already running almost 400 trains a day, Eurotunnel is forecasting a significant increase in traffic. But increasing the power of its network to ensure a constant flow of electricity is critical.

A new Converter Station is being constructed – and it requires substantial concrete groundbearing base units. Traditionally steel rebar has been used as standard reinforcement – but here Combar is the preferred material.

With more than 4.2 million vehicles and 20 million passengers travelling under the Channel each year, the Eurotunnel is recognized as the world’s busiest rolling motorway. It takes almost 400 trains a day to transport these numbers and traffic is forecast to increase significantly within the next few years.To meet this level of demand, Eurotunnel needs to substantially increase the power and stability of its network to ensure a constant flow of electricity. This is especially pertinent during peak demand times when up to eight trains can be running simultaneously inside the Tunnel. As a result, Eurotunnel has awarded GE Grid Solutions a contract to supply a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), to improve the stabilisation of power supply on the catenary traction system

World’s largest for a railway traction system The new Converter Station will be sited at Folkestone in Kent; and when completed will be the world’s largest load balanced STATCOM technology connected to a railway traction system. It is claimed that the solution will reliably power almost double the Eurotunnel traffic capability. Michel Boudoussier, Chief Corporate Officer at Getlink (formerly Groupe Eurotunnel, the public company that manages and operates the Channel Tunnel) commented: ‘Our choice to go with GE’s STATCOM will put Eurotunnel at the forefront of electrical regulation technology for the new generation Velaro trains. It will also enable us to continue to purchase electricity where it is least expensive“.

Steel is not the ideal solution for reinforcement The STATCOM utilises highly dynamic voltage source compensators and along with the reactor and transformers, the Folkestone Converter Station requires substantial multiple concrete ground-bearing base unit slabs. Traditionally steel rebar has been used as the standard reinforcement in constructions like this, but despite its inherent strength, steel is not the ideal solution for reinforcement – especially in electromagnetically sensitive environments. Where high electric currents are concerned, inductive currents are generated within the reinforcing steel. If located too close to these coils there will be a loss of strength as the steel rebar heats up. There are seven base units at the Folkestone site and all have Schöck Combar reinforcement specified, with a minimum design value tensile strength of 445N/ mm2. The elements involved on the project are all part of the Schöck Combar range of ribbed

February 2020 Buildings, Designs reinforcing bars, made of corrosion resistant glass fibre bound by a vinyl ester resin. The reinforcement cages incorporate a combination of prefabricated bent bars, straight bars, tubes and spacers – all installed within the concrete ground-bearing base unit slabs – a total area of around 416 square metres.

A special two-part manufacturing process It is the two-part manufacturing process which enables the ribbed GRP bars to meet the requirements of reinforcing bars. First, in the pultrusion process, high-strength glass fibres, bundled as densly as possible, are pulled through a closed chamber where they are impregnated with a synthetic resin. The parallel alignment of the fibres results in maximum strength of the material. The profiling process then sees the ribs cut into hardened bars and given a final coating. As the vinyl ester resin is diffusion tight and every glass fibre is completely surrounded by resin, the result is a durability in concrete of up to 100 years. Because the product is so highly durable, much stronger than steel, corrosion resistant and not electrically conductive, Schöck Combar reinforced foundations can be built near transformer coils and reactors. The enclosures can be much smaller, without hindering the units performance, which significantly reduces construction and operating costs. Combar is therefore also ideally suited for installations in switchyards; steel mills; aluminium smelters; research and industrial facilities. Wider application examples include its easy machinability in tunnel construction and complete corrosion resistance when building bridge parapets and barrier walls.

FUTURE Designs completes lighting for 22 Bishopsgate FUTURE Designs, the international manufacturer of luminaires and bespoke lighting solutions, has completed the office lighting for 22 Bishopsgate, the tallest tower in the City of London, standing at 278 metres high. The project is developed and managed by AXA IM – Real Assets on behalf of an international consortium of investors, with Lipton Rogers Developments retained as developer. FUTURE Designs has provided the 1.4 million sq ft (130,000 sqm) development, set to be Europe’s first vertical village, with GLOS, a contemporary and minimalist luminaire that results in a perfectly illuminated environment. This linear recessed luminaire was developed in conjunction with HDR | Hurley Palmer Flatt and 22 Bishopsgate’s architects PLP. Wellness and its subsequent impact on productivity of workers is a high priority for the design of this office building, as exemplified by 22 Bishopsgate having London’s largest cycle park and a state-of-theart gym, complete with a climbing window, 125 metres above the ground on level 25, as well as a wellbeing retreat on level 41. It is also the first building in the UK to apply for the Delos WELL Building Standard. GLOS is highly efficient with a lumen per watt value of 157, whilst the careful design ensures the fixtures could be installed in a simple manner reducing install time.

The air handling testing was carried out by BSRIA, an independent research consultancy that provides specialist services in construction and building services. The test confirmed an air handling requirement of 45 litres per second through air slot apertures designed for the maximum pressure drop of 5Pa.

This people-focused building is a complex, 22 sided, faceted glass structure. The design is built and managed to satisfy the changing nature of the City of London in terms of the type, size and priorities of companies based there, including demands for high standards of technology and sustainability. According to the statistics from the City of London Corporation*, while just over a third of businesses were financial services, tech was the fastest growing major sector in the City with jobs growth of 16% , the quality of workspace needed to reflect that in order to attract a more diverse range of tenants. Emphasis has been placed on constructing a building with flexible floorplates, high ceilings and exemplary lighting that compliments the natural light flow, which is enabled with three metres high, triple glazed windows.

The creation of approximately 100,000 sqft of social spaces and services throughout the floors was a key part of the design. There is a 22,000 sqft area of food and dining space on level 2, a members’ club on level 57 and London’s highest public viewing gallery on level 58. Recognising the fact that 99% of City businesses are SMEs, there is an innovation hub for small businesses and start ups on level seven. Levels three and four, meanwhile, will house a new 51,000 sqft events and meeting venue available for use by the hour or day. As well as providing a place for 12,000 people to work, creating a diverse business community, 22 Bishopsgate also provides a range of retail, bar and restaurant units.

OAKMAN INNS & RESTAURANTS REFINANCES DEBT WITH CYNERGY BANK PROVIDING FIRM WITH MORE CAPITAL FOR BUSINESS PLANS Oakman Inns & Restaurants Limited, which owns and runs 24 pubs, restaurants and hotels in the South-East and Midlands, has refinanced the debt on two of its properties.

These are: The White Hart in Ampthill, Bedfordshire; and The Royal Forester in Ascot, Berkshire. The White Hart is a historic Grade II listed building, which features a wall mural above the bar’s fireplace of the Prince of Wales feathers, created by local artists in 1646. The pub also has a 1930s dining room which was built toward the end of the arts and craft era. The Royal Forester has been a meeting place in the centre of Ascot for over 140 years. The historic building has been refurbished, remade and redesigned since joining the Oakman Inns group. It now has 24 guest rooms, each with bespoke, contemporary interiors.

Cynergy Bank provided circa £11 million in newly negotiated loans for the two properties (£3.172m for The White Hart and £7.809m for The Royal Forester). Both loans were previously being charged at a higher interest rate and the new deals will significantly reduce interest charges. The loans were provided with an initial 12-month interest only period followed by repayments modelled over a 24 year term. (46t) capacity lifting beam for the latest phase of the wharf modernization at British Antarctic Survey’s Rothera Research Station. Caldwell specifically designed and manufactured the lifting system to suit the harsh, cold environment. 32

he model 24S-46t-315 adjustable bail lifting beam was delivered by Caldwell’s UK-based partner, Bishop Lifting, to BAM, who is working in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), to deliver civil projects associated with the new RRS Sir David Attenborough, a research vessel owned by NERC and operated by BAS for scientific research and logistics projects. Principally, a new wharf will provide safe berthing and efficient operations for the iconic ship.

The beam packaged for export from Caldwell to BAM Nuttall Limited. The 8,217mm (27ft.)-long beam was designed by Dan Mongan, special application support, new product development specialist at Caldwell. Due to the cold weather in the Antarctic, steel alloy selection, welding processes, and type of paint were all important considerations at the outset, he said. The beam was based on the standard model 24 adjustable bail lifting system, but offered higher capacity. ‘Bail’ refers to the center item that the crane hook attaches to. It was 1,372mm (4.5 ft.) wide, 1,920mm (6.3 ft.) high and weighed in at 10,100 lbs. (4.58t). They are often used, he said, for loads that are balanced and symmetrical,

but with lifting points not located in a position for a level lift. They are also suited for use when lifting loads at any desired angle, simply by lifting the with sling legs at that desired angle. Over the next decade, British Antarctic Survey’s Research Stations will undergo a comprehensive modernization program to ensure that facilities continue to enable world-leading research. The new wharf is scheduled to be built over two Antarctic seasons, starting in November 2018 and completing in spring 2020, in order to improve ship and boating operations. The rear section of the new wharf was constructed in the first season, then the front section attached during the latest phase. Gates added: “This is a very interesting project. Hanson contractor Cris Services Group has underscored its commitments to safety and compliance by adding a sixth low-entry Mercedes-Benz Econic mixer truck to its fast-growing fleet. Like its predecessors, all bar one of which entered service within the last 12 months, the new 8x4/4 chassis was supplied by Dealer Sparshatt Truck & Van, and wears the colours of the operator’s leading customer, Hanson UK. Former driver Cris Calina founded his business with a single truck in 2002. A Gold standard FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) member, Cris Services Group now runs a fleet of 35 eight-wheeled mixers, which also includes five muscular Mercedes-Benz Arocs.

Rather than maintaining his Mercedes-Benz trucks in-house, however, Mr Calina prefers to take out Complete Service Contracts and entrust his Econic and Arocs mixers to the expert aftersales team at the £2-million dealership in Dartford which Sparshatt Truck & Van opened last summer.

Mirroring Cris Services’ previous Econics, the new truck is a 3235 L model, and powered by a 7.7-litre six-cylinder engine which produces 260 kW (354 hp). However, while earlier vehicles drive through sixspeed Allison automatic gearboxes, the latest employs a 12-speed version of the fuel-efficient Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated manual transmission. Its ENA configuration – single front steer axle, double-drive bogie and rear-steer axle – gives the truck a surprisingly tight turning circle. The resulting, enhanced manoeuvrability compared to a standard 32-tonne construction eight-wheeler is a major advantage for operation in the capital. As with all new Econics supplied through the manufacturer’s UK Dealer network, the vehicle is covered by a three-year/160,000 km warranty. Cris Calina commented: “Our first Econic has been on the road for a couple of years now and has been

very good – we’ve had no reliability issues with any of our Mercedes-Benz trucks. “There was a bit of initial resistance to the Econic’s low-entry cab from some drivers, but this was quickly overcome. Within a very short time at the wheel they realised how much better the visibility is, and, as a result, how much less stressful the job could be. The Econic is also air-conditioned and flat-floored, which makes it comfortable and very easy to access or exit safely.” He added: “Sparshatt’s new facilities in Dartford are very impressive, and the Dealer provides a highly professional service. RSS Adds Food Grade Hoists to JDN Range Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd. (RSS) is stocking JD Neuhaus’s (JDN) new range of food grade Mini air hoists. RSS, a supplier of lifting and rigging equipment, secured a partnership with JDN UK in mid-2019 and has since offered its pneumatic and hydraulic hoists, crane systems, and components, manufactured at headquarters in Germany, principally for use in extreme environments. It has added to the portfolio a product for lifting in areas that require extreme cleanliness and hygiene, such as the food and beverage sector.

Hutin also pointed to twist lock hooks (top and bottom) and the availability of the hoists with 5m height of lift and 4m length of control. Lifting speeds with full load vary from 6.3 m/min (Mini 1000) to 20 m/min (Mini 125). Lowering speeds with full load also vary from 12 m/min (Mini 1000) to 40 m/min (Mini 125). All models are suited to use in ATEZ Zones 2 (hazardous gas, vapour, and mist environments) and 22 (hazardous dust). Crucial for all companies who wish to be successful, Aluprof now takes this to the next level by continually pushing the boundary of what is currently being achieved in the fenestration market and raising the bar through innovative design. By way of example, Aluprof was the first company to introduce the insulator ‘Aerogel’ into their aluminium profiles to increase thermal efficiency with very little weight gain. Aerogel is a synthetic, porous and ultralight material which is derived from a gel, where the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas. The resultant material is still a solid, but with an extremely low density and low thermal conductivity. The ‘MB-86 AERO’ system by Aluprof was the world’s first aluminium window and door system to use aerogel offering a Uf value from 0.57 W/(m2K) and UW up to 0.8 W/(m2K). At just 86 mm wide the system is capable of carrying quadruple glazing to easily achieve passivhaus standards. Pioneering fire rated aluminium systems for both internal and external use, Aluprof have for some time incorporated both ceramic and gypsum cores within their profiles with various mechanical fixtures to offer screens which give EI120 fire protection for the most robust installations imaginable. System design focusses on narrow sightlines and where required can always be matched in sightline with standard systems for non-protected areas of the building giving specifiers free reign on design. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible, Aluprof have recently worked with high specification glass processors of fire rated glasses to test and achieve glass-to-glass joints within fire screens. This Aluprof innovation allows specifiers to achieve longer runs of glazing which are not interrupted by mullions. Staying with innovation in fire rated system, but this time in external curtain wall systems, Aluprof are the first company to design and test a ‘capless’ stick curtain wall system which achieves a fire rating of EI60. The ‘MB-SR50N EI efekt’ system has been used on various schemes across the UK where fire needs to be contained with the added benefit that the system can be seamlessly linked in with non-fire rated areas of curtain wall, again giving specifiers the freedom of design whilst meeting strict safety issues.

One of the most recent innovations is the development of new transom to mullion fixing arrangements on the company’s popular ‘MB-SR50N’ curtain wall system. Aluminium joints between mullions and transoms are often the limiting factor when using large glazed units in curtain wall. With the dead load being transferred from the transom to the mullion there is also a large turning moment as the glazed units sit to the front of the structural transom. The new development from Aluprof caters for a safe transom to mullion carrying capacity of 550 Kg at each of the transom, potentially allowing for a glazed unit of over 1 tonne in weight being accommodated into the MB-SR50N curtain wall system. This carrying capacity far exceeds many of the curtain wall systems currently available on the market. The key to Aluprof’s innovation is the adoption of a group-wide iterative process that requires feedback on real project designs, requirements and installations, which is then brought back into the design department. Over time, product is enhanced and improved, and, along the way, every so often an innovation or step change will naturally follow. It will be interesting to see what the new decade brings for Aluprof’s systems. Grass that is too short can have a hard time surviving the colder weather, whereas grass that is too long can become brittle with the frost, so a happy medium is required.

It is important to keep weeds and moss under control throughout winter as they can quickly take over your lawn. It is also a good idea to regularly rake fallen leaves and other debris so that the grass still has access to the sunlight.

As the temperatures drop, the plants that are not killed by the frost prepare to go dormant until the warmer weather comes. Cut off any blackened stems and clear out any dead foliage such as annual flowers and vegetables to prevent diseases from spreading to other areas of the garden.

Gardening equipment such as lawnmowers are rarely needed during the winter, so it is the perfect time to service it. Sharpen the lawnmower blades and ensure that the engine is serviced to keep it in tip top condition. Empty any remaining fuel or check that the electricity lead is well maintained before storing away.

Spread a thick layer of mulch over all of the remaining plants and soil; this keeps the temperature much more even so that the plants can acclimatise much faster without being stressed; fallen leaves from any trees on the property also make a good source of mulch so don’t discard them.

Drain all of your hoses to prevent frost attack and wrap hessian fabric around any external taps and pipes to protect them from the cold. Tools which will not be needed such as lawn edger’s and pruning shears should be wiped clean and all metal parts sprayed with a lubricant like WD40 to prevent corrosion. For tools which will still be in use such as garden spades and forks, these should be cleaned off after each use.

Sussex to host South East Construction Expo 2020 Sussex will host its third annual South East Construction Expo in 2020 on the earlier date of 28th April 2020 at the South of England Event Centre in Ardingly.

Over 2,500 delegates attended the Expo in September 2019, where 120 companies in the construction industry exhibited the latest technology, ideas and expertise and dozens of workshops and presentations were held on key topics for the industry. The trade show, founded 12 years ago and previously held in Kent, showcases the region’s largest range of construction products and services and is a ‘must visit’ for anyone whose business deals in development, property and construction. An exciting programme of speakers is being put together for 2020 and will be announced over the coming months. Delegates attending can sign up to one of the largest FREE ‘Meet the Buyer’ one-on-one sessions with business leaders and attend a range of useful workshops and networking opportunities. Sussex Chamber of Commerce is supporting the event this year as well as the Institute of Directors. Big name businesses as always will be involved.
