JET MUNSTER Selection of projects as an Urban Design student |april 2022

Welcome to my Urban Design portfolio. In this portfolio, you can see my work as an Urban Design student. Project for clients related to school projects as well as projects directly from the work field. Let me inspire you while looking at my projects!

My qualities and fascination My character has always been social and communicative. While paying attention to the world and people around me, I am able to adapt to situations and atmospheres to stay focused on my tasks. I love to learn and know more about other people and cultures, to influence my thinking in a positive way. While doing so I get inspired by the people and work around me. My fascinations with Urban Design come from my characteristics. Everyone experiences the city in a different way, which means everyone uses it differently. Being able to design interventions in this experience inspires me because I am able to improve the way people use the built environment. With this in mind, the flexibility and different layers of a city, village, or landscape make a mixture of new design ideas and possibilities. The key is to find balance in the possibilities and creative ideas when designing a plan.

“First we shape the cities – then they shape us.” Jan Gehl | Cities for People

The Josink Es, a business park located on the west side of the city of Enschede will be transformed into a mixed-use environment. The philosophy of this project comes from the goal to offer adaptive housing, Monotome wijken public spaces, and a flexible built environment to quickly changingMRA vs Euroregio demographic developments. The project area will be divided into atmospheres and functions to allow use for different social groups. The Kwaliteiten en kansen urban structure will consist of a strong public space, which allows the design to be more flexible on the smaller (micro) scale. Within this portfolio, the toolbox designed for the analysis, the areas of research, and the project area can be seen. The principles for the masterplan will be done soon whereafter I can start visualizing the final design. These visuals give an insight into my project. The project will be finished on the 7th of June. Which will be presented on my Issuu page.

The green heart of Ulft Wesenthorst | Ulft 10 weeks project

CityLad project Saxion

Hidden behind a rich grove in the area of The Wesenthorst is a former secondary school that closed its doors in the summer of 2021. The building is located in an imposing park-like area in the heart of Ulft. The goal of this project was to redevelop the area so that the area will be connected to its surroundings again and add value to the town. Three other students and I achieved this goal by inventorying, analyzing, and doing research for the spatial themes and the different scenarios. While analyzing the area we came to the conclusion that the area consists of different atmospheres and themes. Therefore, the area was divided into four sections that were designed individually and connected later on. The role I fulfilled was analyzing the historical structure of the area and working on two sectors from the plan. The former Wesenthorst building, which is no longer in use, and living in the park. Therefore those designs are the ones featured in my portfolio. The goal for the Wesenthorst building was to provide space for the stakeholders, houses are located in the park to create a new living environment within the town of Ulft.

Valiyathura redesigned for water resitance Valiyathura | Trivandrum | India 10 weeks project

CityLab project Saxion

Next to the airport of Trivandrum lies the neighborhood Valiyathura. An area where the fisherman community of the cities lives and works. Were old traditions related to their culture still exist, while being in close contact with the sea. People living in Valiyathura see the sea as their second home. They fish, use boats as transportation and use it for recreation. Unfortunately, due to climate change and an unregulated government, the shoreline is becoming less and less due to erosion. The people of Valiyathura are in great danger, which is the reason three other students from my study and I went to India to research the area and hope to find a solution. The goal of this project was to analyze the situation and design a solution where the residents of Valiyathura were not only safe but could also keep their way of living in close connection to the sea. While doing research in India the other students and I worked together with students from the College of Architecture in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. The research was about the neighborhood and its surroundings and consisted of a field visit, talking to residents, and sketching the current situation. When finishing the work in India the other students from Saxion and I designed a master plan as a solution for the people of Valiyathura. While working on this project I did not only gain knowledge about the built environment and house typologies in India, I also gained knowledge and design skills from the architecture students. *note: the sketches underneath the building typologies were made by an architecture student

The nature-inclusive landscape of the future Lemelerveld 8 weeks project

Minor landscape architecture

The writers of the essay ‘Natuurlijk Nederland’ state that the landscape of The Netherlands consists of too much agricultural land to be prepared for the future and climate change. The landscape of the town Lemelerveld is an example of this statement. This town consists mostly of agricultural landscapes where the farmers of the town have their crops and animals. For this project three other students from the minor and I worked under the name ‘Be Green’, to explore the possibilities for the landscape of Lemelerveld. With this project, we designed possibilities with the philosophy of being as eco-friendly as possible. The landscape was ecologically designed and the people living there use resources from the landscape while the houses produce their own energy. While doing so the landscape of Lemelerveld can be an example of similar landscapes in The Netherlands. With the main goal to create as much eco-friendly landscape as possible. The role I fulfilled was analyzing the area to develop the interventions that can be seen on the right sight, with a more in-depth analysis of the gradients to enable overflow and the eco-friendly villages. *Note: the masterplan design is also created by one other student, we also worked together on the Twinmotions renders

Redesigning the city through trees KNSM-eiland | Amsterdam 8 weeks project

Minor landscape architecture

When dealing with high urban density in a residential area allowing softer principles in the project area can be the solution to create a better living environment, in this plan participially. The KNSM-eiland is located on the north-south side of Amsterdam and surrounded by water. The area is petrified which causes problems with water drainage and other climate-related problems. Trees located on the KNSM-eiland are not future-proof due to the petrified environment and life expectancy. While following the minor landscape architecture I did research on the relationship between the built environment and nature. With this project, the two came together where nature needed to improve the built environment. While working on this project I expanded my knowledge about trees and their qualities for the environment. De different species were placed strategically for the island to improve in the (near)future. Water drainage of the island will be improved as well as extra shadow places in the summer, which will cause less heating of the area. In the current situation, the pavement is damaged due to the roots of the trees that were not positioned correctly, in the new plan this problem will no longer be present. *Note: this is a group project, the analysis was done together. The visuals individually.

Redevelopment industrial area Rigtersbleek Twekkelerveld | Enschede 8 weeks project

Internship municipality of Enschede

The former industrial area of Rigtersbleek will be transformed into a lively living and working environment while keeping an eye on the industrial heritage of the textile industry. The area is located between the city center and the neighborhood Twekkerveld. A place where the textile industry flourished during the industrial revolution but is now characterized by decay. The goal of this project was to analyze the area and design the first steps for the redevelopment of the area. The framework consists of elements to restore the features of the industrial area and connect the area to the network of the city by adding slow traffic routes, and also strengthening the green structures. While doing so, living spaces will be added as well as working places for creative entrepreneurs. I worked on this project individually while working as an intern at the municipality of Enschede.
