ew year, new president, and a new issue of Jetset...

Welcome to Issue One of Jetset Magazine for 2017, where our esteemed collective of contributing editors constitutes one of the most effective creative cabinets in all of publishing. Our very own Secretary of Style and Entrepreneurial Domination, Daymond John, tells you how to sensibly present your business to your customers with affordable and functional office space. As someone who launched FUBU from his house and turned it into a multi-billion dollar empire that eventually took up multiple floors of office space, Daymond is an expert on co-working and shared office spaces. Meanwhile, Ken McElroy has excellent insight on how to start thinking like banks in order to put your money to work for you in the most effective way possible. Investment guru Robert Kiyosaki shares valuable tax lessons he’s gleaned from life and studying presidential candidate’s tax returns (with practical implications you can apply to your tax strategy now). Barry LaBov shows business owners how to build customer loyalty in 2017, Dr. Demartini has a fascinating piece on the importance of dressing for success, Linda Henley-Smith shows you how to fan the flames of enthusiasm, and “Master Closer” Elio Khalife breaks down his essential life lessons. Our cover story focuses on Hugh Jackman, the Hollywood veteran leading man who is admired, respected, and considered to be one of the finest actors working today by Democrats, Republicans, and X-Men enthusiasts alike. As he portrays his most famous role for the final time in Logan, we discuss the future of his illustrious career. Elsewhere, we sit down with the man responsible for LA’s hottest nightclub, Darren Dzienciol, and profile an accomplished and impressive woman who finished second in a very important election in 2016. No, not that one. I am talking about Jaime Lee, the New Hampshire native and Miss Jetset 2016 runner-up making a major impact educating Americans on the importance of health and fitness. And as always, these pages are filled with tons of great luxury content. For anyone in the market for a supercar, yacht, or vacation property in 2017, our comprehensive “Luxury Auto Preview,” “Yacht Buyers Guide,” and “Resort Residences” guide are, respectively, the most helpful tools out there for selecting the perfect status symbol, be it on road, sea, or land. And we also take a look at some tremendous contemporary Chinese art, and examine high fashion from prodigious designer Breccia Aurora Demartini. So enjoy the issue. Keep visiting JetsetMag.com often, and let’s continue to make affluent lifestyle great...again.

THE FUTURE OF BOATING BY BOZCA DESIGN BY MATTHEW VON DAVEN

w

ith its dramatic lines and stealthy fastback figure, the new Sarco 19-meter luxury yacht is bound to turn heads. Inspired by the head of the extinct Sarcosuchus crocodile, this carbon fiber-laden beast is one of the fiercest looking boats we have ever laid eyes upon. And its bite certainly matches its bark, as its twin MTU V10 2000 M94 engines can hit speeds of over 53 knots, placing just out of the speed boat category (a tremendous feat given its amenities). Envisioned as an amalgam of automotive and yacht designs, famed designer Timur Bozca’s latest revolutionary boat was inspired in large part by fine luxury cars and products. Like many high-end automobiles, the body has a sharp front-end design and a curvy rear, while upper side glass connects with the lower glass to help give the Sarco an unmistakable identity. The cockpit is uniquely positioned in the center to accentuate the power of the position, while the boat’s powerful engines are proudly displayed behind a rear glass cabinet seamlessly connected to the sun bed. Inside, the Sarco is as high-tech as boats come, filled with enough simplistic but innovate design touches to make Apple CEO blush. With smart OLEDs used for lighting and display, the interior is both striking and futuristic, while also somehow feeling inviting, making this certainly one to watch.

To see more unbelievable boats, turn to Page 30 to check out our roundup of the 57th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 Motorcycle BY David Haraldsen

T

his past October in Santa Monica, BMW Motorrad debuted its groundbreaking new VISION NEXT 100 design. This revolutionary concept aims to solve the safety concerns often associated with highperformance motorcycles by creating a self-balancing (nearly self-driving), fully integrated riding experience for both novice and experienced riders alike, one that doesn’t require a helmet. Here’s how it works. While you ride, a “Digital Companion” is constantly evaluating riding conditions and providing assistance when needed. It suggests ideal lines and banking angles; if a rider fails to correct their line or angle and is put in danger, the bike will automatically correct itself. The design also eliminates most of the buttons and displays commonly found on

today’s vehicles. A “Visor,” controlled solely by eye movement, seamlessly gives riders access to a plethora of information related to driving conditions and hazards. Meanwhile, sensors in your suit keep track of pulse rate and body temperature, while the bike’s frame has been sculpted as a single integrated piece of metal, allowing it to be steered without the use of bearings and joints (turning the handlebars adjusts the entire frame of the bike). And it’s all powered by a zero-emission powertrain unit that actually changes shape depending upon usage conditions.

THE ULTIMATE TEST DRIVE BY DAVID HARALDSEN

o you’re considering purchasing a new Lamborghini. But to fully grasp the potential of these extravagant works of art, one needs to actually get behind the wheel and experience them firsthand. That’s why our good friends at the esteemed Italian automaker have created an unparalleled test driving experience specifically for affluent buyers. I recently had the privilege of attending the Lamborghini Esperienza at Palm Beach International Raceway and it was a full day of track activities, including four high-speed racing sessions with four new Huracán models. From a full throttle trip down PBIR’s straightaway (with a lesson in trail braking and cornering techniques) to a breathtaking slalom course to full speed laps around PBIR’s challenging 2.034-mile, 10-turn road course, every activity was an exhilarating showcase of the Huracán’s power. JETSETMAG.COM

I got to explore the vehicle’s three different driving modes (Strada, Sport, and Corsa), and the Huracán handled so smoothly I could hardly believe my eyes when I glanced down at the speedometer and realized I was going 160 mph. At the end of the session, it was clear to see why Lamborghini has remained a worldwide leader in the supercar market for the past several decades. So, whether you’re on the fence about purchasing a new Lamborghini or you’re just looking for a small taste of what it’s like to get behind the wheel of one of the world’s most exhilarating and highlyrespected automotive masterpieces, the Lamborghini Esperienza is one opportunity you should absolutely race to sign-up for.

ntrepid. Audacious. Fervent. These are all adjectives that define an effective businesswoman. Those three words, in all their authority, typically distinguish the good from the best. In the case of this female, her audacity comes with integrity that is deeply rooted from childhood. As an introspective high fashion designer, she has a keen sense of her own design focus and ideals and elicits this profound sensation rather wholeheartedly. It truly sets her apart. “I want to dress the everyday entrepreneur,” says designer Breccia Aurora Demartini. This past year, the 28-year-old has focused her efforts on custom designs for clients (and even construed her first wedding gown and shoe line) but still designs plenty of custom ready-to-wear for boutiques. Due to a cultured upbringing and personal drive, the style of her clothing is unmistakably evocative, with a hint of sexy masculinity, all the while not lacking any feminine sophistication. With inspirations like Jackie Kennedy and Game of Thrones (Think braid crowns, capes and romantic lace), her collections have taken on the likeness of a modern day art piece full of cultural cues and, of course, immaculate design. Before the idea for her fashion company was in place, Breccia chose to pack up and leave the country to make sense of her purpose. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I just knew I wanted to study fashion,” she says. The native Texan went to college in Melbourne, Australia at RMIT University, and after some inspirational travel to Paris, came back home to Houston to finish her studies and open the doors to her sought-after fashion company. And in 2013, Demartini Fashion became Breccia’s most prolific namesake. Although fashion has been a large part of her life since she was a young girl, she attributes a lot of her success to her father who was always supportive of her choices and encouraged her to live out her dreams regardless of social norms. Breccia’s father Dr. John

Demartini, a human behavior researcher, best-selling author and public speaker, led a busy life of travel during Breccia’s younger years. Even so, Breccia often felt her father’s positive impact when he was not physically there, and this encouraged her to push through and be the relentless fighter she is today. But it wasn’t always easy. Early in the developmental stages of her business, the young designer encountered obstacles with structuring her team. Team members lacked her vision which proved an integral part of the brand’s overall success. “You need a team to build a dream.” She confides, “I did it all wrong.” She then sought to focus her time and money on the collections and has completed five seasons to date. She is currently working on her Fall/Winter 2017 collection entitled “Absence of Color”, which stands ISSUE 1 . 2017

for the idea that black is not actually a color but instead acknowledges the notion of, “Notice me, but do not intrude.” The pieces also allude to the brand’s unknown journey ahead. “I want to build my own brand and I want to be just as big as Chanel,” Breccia says robustly. “Chanel was a dominating woman, and she took on a man’s world.” The last few months, she has worked fervently to rebrand the company in hopes of perfecting the business side of it, and in turn, complete the whole learning process. Breccia plans on expanding her repertoire to big-time department stores and will even debut a menswear line. She also plans to create more shoes and even design an exclusive jewelry collection. Following in her father’s footsteps, she envisions writing a book to chronicle her unique experience with the brand by showcasing all that led to her achievement. She also plans to do London, Milan, Paris, New York, and Vancouver Fashion Weeks by the end of 2017. Some apparent nostalgia sets in as she begins to describe her favorite piece from her first collection she ever made, a gorgeous mermaid skirt, that ran in New York Fashion Week and Fashion Houston. She also recalls a silk sharmuse goddess dress in lovely red marsala that was another one of her favorites. With nearly any hesitation, she remarks, “This is just the beginning of my journey.” And it’s with that confidence she began her venture roughly three years ago. Now, with some hard-earned experience under her belt and an ardent heart, a bright future seems just that much more tangible. Demartinifashion.com

Everything You Need to Know About Building, Buying, and Enjoying By ty fahlman

The Dynamiq D4 Jetsetter

t's the greatest status symbol on the planet. Nothing conveys to the world “I've made it like having your very own yacht over a hundred feet long, with room for a full crew and a half dozen of your luckiest friends. Yet as anyone who has ever actually owned one can tell you, aside from when you are out exploring the world's most exotic locales, yacht ownership is a daunting task. Serious depreciation aside, it is incredibly expensive, and there are numerous pitfalls and headaches that arise. A great alternative is chartering, but there is something special when its your yacht, outfitted exactly as you see fit. So to make navigating these waters as enjoyable as possible, we have assembled this comprehensive guide to conceiving, purchasing, staffing, and exploring.

ISSUE 1 . 2017

BUILDING Buying a yacht is a daunting task, but the first thing you need to do is determine whether you want a used or new one. If you go the latter route, you will certainly be paying more and waiting longer, but you will have a creation that is entirely your own in both conception and design. You can make it exactly as big or as fast as you want, with the exact layout and number of guestrooms you desire. If owning a yacht is the ultimate status symbol, then building your own is the ultimate way to do it. But first, ask yourself these questions: Where do you plan on sailing? How often will you use it? How many people will be on-board? We recommend chartering first to help answer these crucial questions. Next, instead of finding an insane concept floating around and taking it straight to a builder, find a yacht designer with a strong reputation, one whom shares your vision, and understands exactly how you intend to use the yacht, as functionality is everything in yacht design. This is less like finding an architect and more like selecting a wand in Harry Potter; expect to spend a while finding the one that's perfect for you. To make things easier, JetsetMag.com has a tremendous, comprehensive directory of all notable designers. JETSETMAG.COM

Unless you are dealing with a designer from a massive company that handles everything (like Fraser Yachts), you are then going to need to locate a builder and shipyard to actually bring the thing to life. Your designer will most certainly have a builder and shipyard in mind that they have worked well with in the past and recommend, but that doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't shop around just like you did when found the designer. Regardless, during construction (one-to-three years, depending on size and scope) you will want to keep an eye on everything, ensuring that the project is coming in on budget, on time, and faithful to your vision. And remember, patience is a virtue.

BUYING If that sounds like too much work, you take the less-expensive rout and purchase a yacht that is either previously owned or new from a broker. There are dozens of great new yachts for sale (like the ones on Page 30), and many prominent brokers out there, like Moran, Fraser, Northrop & Johnson, and SYS. In the US, most brokers are based in either Florida or California (about 800 and 300, respectively), and JetsetMag.com also has a very comprehensive directory of them. A few questions to ask when buying a used yacht: How much repairs/

renovations are needed? What was the original purchase price? What is the estimated value? Why is it being sold? Where has it been used? How much has it been used? The owner/broker should have a full maitenience log and readily be able to answer all of these questions.

REGISTERING/INSURING/MAINTAINING Regardless of where you're docking it (but especially if it's in Florida), for tax reasons, you will probably want to register it elsewhere. Stateside, the place is Delaware, while the Cayman Islands, Marshall Islands, Liberia, and Malta are some of the most popular foreign registration destinations. We like Cayman the best — especially if you intend to sail the Caribbean and Mediterranean — because vessels registered there benefit from all the privileges of the British flag, while simultaneously having the tax-free and confidentiality perks the nation is known for. When it comes to insurance, you are going to want to make sure that your coverage includes hull protection, liability, hurricane reimbursement, just to name a few. Also, before you set sail anywhere, make sure you are covered in that territory. We can't stress this enough. Expect to spend about 1.5 percent of your yacht's value on premiums for proper coverage. As for maintenance, you want to find a company that handles everything (cleaning, electrical, mechanical…), and some major companies also offer captains and staffing.

Greek Islands

CREW If you own a jet, you already know that assembling and keeping a good crew is essential, and it is no different when owning a yacht. Most major yacht-management companies, like Northrop & Johnson and Luxury Yacht Group, have entire divisions dedicated to making sure owners find the perfect crew. This is perhaps the most important job that these companies perform; they vet people, try and match them to your needs and desires, and make sure they're a good fit. Almost all of this time will be spent finding a captain. A good captain is invaluable, as they usually already have a crew (including a chief stewardess, first mate, chief engineer, and chef) and have the knowledge and experience you need. LOCALES And now, on to the whole reason why you've endured all of the above — the pure, unparalleled thrill of setting sail to the most gorgeous and exotic locations in the world in your very own vessel. But where to go? These pages are filled with some of the most idyllic and desirable yachting destinations in the world. From Fiji to the Greek Isles, from Bermuda to the Amalfi Coast, these are the places where you will truly be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Because if you've come this far, you deserve it.

The amenities are always first-rate, the service impeccable, and the residences are perfect for those seeking effortless ownership at the highest level of luxury. The last point is certainly the case with the 52 private residences being built at Montage Los Cabos. Such amenities include multiple gourmet dining options, a 20,000 square foot pool, renowned full-service spa (with spa pool), well-appointed fitness center, Montage’s signature children’s program, Paintbox, and access to a brand new Fred Couples Signature Golf Course. Homes are located within the exclusive, secluded Twin Dolphin master planned community. Named after (and built on the site of) the legendary icon of luxury, the former Hotel Twin Dolphin, this community also encompasses the adjacent Maravilla private residential community and spans both Santa Maria Bay and Las Viudas Beach. Maravilla offers a variety of residential options for homeowners, including custom homesites, villas, and townhomes. The overall themes of the Montage Residences Los Cabos seem to be effortless ownership and ingenious design. They are offering comprehensive property management, optional rental management, and concierge services; and they have turn-key, furnished, two- and three-bedroom options with open floor plans

that compliment year-round, indoor/outdoor living. Featuring luxury amenities throughout, at each home you will find exquisite details like expansive terraces overlooking the ocean and enveloping vistas and landscapes, and unfettered access to the swimmable bay for snorkeling or diving. The architectural and design styles are intended to highlight the natural coastal beauty of the region while also reinforcing conservation and sustainability. Acclaimed architect Robert Glazier is overseeing the project and working to ensure that the homes embrace the stunning Baja desert landscape and crystalline waters of the Sea of Cortez while also being eco-friendly both inside and out. Homes are being crafted using only the highest-quality locally-sourced and environmentally-respectful materials wherever possible, and the properties will feature a variety of native materials and a palette of natural desert tones, making them both one-of-a-kind and one with their surroundings. Montage Los Cabos is set to open in early 2018. Shortly thereafter, it is guaranteed to instantly become one of the most prestigious and desirable vacation spots in all of North America. And its residences are poised to become one of the most elegant and sought-after private communities in the region. So with residences now available for pre-sale, our advice is that you act quickly. MOTORCYCLING ACROSS NEW ZEALAND’S SOUTH ISLAND BY TARA HITCHCOCK

I

was convinced Robert Redford had been to New Zealand many times. After all, the Oscar winner has a career that spans five decades; certainly his passport (which resembles the ink work on Ozzy Osbourne’s chest) includes at least one stamp from the “Land of the Loud White Cloud.” But I was wrong. Redford’s first trip to New Zealand was only a year or so ago. The acting legend spent a few months there shooting Pete’s Dragon, and during his time, he fell in love with the place. When I interview him about the film (out on DVD now), I tell him I am headed there for a motorcycle trip with my husband Kenn, he gets excited. “Are you going to ride?” he asks. “Nope,” I reply. “That’s my husband’s job. I’m on the back.”

Kenn and I decide to focus our trip on New Zealand’s picturesque South Island. After spending our first night in Christchurch, we head to South Pacific Motorcycles to pick up our BMW K-1600. “Did we just rent a Grand Torino minus two wheels?” Kenn asks upon seeing the bike (affectionately named “Fiona”). A 6-cylinder behemoth, Fiona was by far the largest motorcycle we had ever rented, and she introduces herself with a roar as we slowly make our way out of the driveway and towards the “Adventure Capital” of New Zealand, Queenstown. The Road to Mt. Cook hugs the edge of Lake Pukaki, and after taking the trip in and back out, we decide to spend the night near Twizel at a luxury B&B called the Matuka Luxury Lodge. Matuka’s proprietors, Peter and Jo, are prototypical Kiwis, and they go out of their way to make us feel right at home. The next day, our trek through fields of yellow and gold tussock, farmland, and vineyards brings us to Queenstown. Roughly 11,000 people call this picturesque city home, but that number swells significantly each year as over a million tourists come to visit, many of them hoping to do things that defy all common sense, like free-falling 140 feet from a narrow bridge overlooking the Kawarau river (which Kenn did). When Redford was filming Pete’s Dragon in the small fishing town of Tapanui, he treated his family to a Queenstown getaway,

chosing luxury villa Wyuna House as his base. Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters shuttled the actor to the villa in the town of Paradise, and the Redfords dined across the street at the five-star Blanket Bay Luxury Lodge. We opted for the Stoneridge Estate, a small lodge surrounded by twelve acres of lush gardens and vineyards with incredible views of Lake Hayes. Stoneridge is just a stone’s throw from one of New Zealand’s top-rated dining spots, Amisfield Winery, and was a location on Season 13 of The Bachelor. We spend the next day on the Milford Sound Road, and one of the world’s great drives does not disappoint. We follow the road through Te Anau, passing Lake Te Anau and the densely forested Murchison Mountains before heading toward the engineering marvel known as the Homer Tunnel. It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust, but when you reach the other side of the tunnel, it’s like you’ve entered Middle Earth and expect to see Gandalf any moment. There are an array of fjord boat tours to pick from once you get to the Sound, so you can spend as much time as you’d like on the water. Or if time is an issue, you can shave off some hours by helicoptering back to Queenstown. The most scenic way to “The Coast” is through the Crown Range toward Wanaka. No trip west is complete without a stop at the historic Cardrona Hotel, one of the only remaining buildings from the

“New Zealand is a country with a smile on its face.” - Robert Redford area’s gold rush. After that, we head the Wanaka way and over the Haast Pass toward the Tasman Sea. It’s rainforest country, and there’s no shortage of waterfalls and jaw-dropping photo ops. Our goal is to make it to Franz Josef and the Te Waonui Forest Retreat, another five-star eco retreat, and one of a few luxury options in the area. After checking in and soaking in the local hot pools, we wait for the skies to clear so we can get up close and personal with the glacier. The Franz Josef and Fox glaciers are just a few highlights of the Westland National Park. You can walk in and get close to the mouth of the glacier or you can opt to land directly on one. We of course choose the latter. Our Glacier Helicopters pilot snakes his way through the craggy peaks and touches down on the Fox Glacier just as the sun is moving overhead making the ice look like jewels. The next day we

arrive at our final South Island stop, the Arthur’s Pass Wilderness Lodge, to take part in their evening “sheep demonstration.” After a delightful three-course meal of venison and New Zealand wine, it’s off to bed, as our bike trip comes to an end the next day in Christchurch. As we ride back down across the gorgeous countryside, I try to take a moment to savor the vast expanse of unfettered beauty that engulfs me. If you have never been, I simply can’t urge you enough. As Redford told me after his own South Island adventure, “New Zealand is a country with a smile on its face.” I couldn’t think of a more apt description. Yes, it’s a long ways away, but there is something so unique and exuberant and enchanting about this place that you are destined to remember it for the rest of your life. I know Kenn and I will. And I am pretty sure The Sundance Kid will too. The Finest Gathering of Classic Cars, Aircraft, and Yachts in the World 60

JETSETMAG.COM

C

onsider yourself an admirer of classic cars, yachts, and aircraft? Since its inception, Vintage Weekend has grown to become one of the most highly anticipated events for people like you. Celebrated annually at Ocean Reef Club, this long-standing tradition brings collectors and admirers of vintage modes of transport together — not only those passionate about classic conveyances, but all who appreciate history and tradition. And you don’t need to know much about cars, boats, or planes to be thrilled by the epic celebration that is Vintage Weekend.

A Storied Tradition Over four days on the first weekend in December, Ocean Reef Club members gather alongside vintage aircraft, yachts, and automobile aficionados to showcase their vintage modes of transport for viewing, touring, judging, and appreciating. It all started more than 20 years ago, when Vicki and Alan Goldstein brought the idea for Vintage Weekend to The Reef, marking the beginning of this popular event. After attending a classic yacht show in Southwest Harbor, Maine; Vicki pursued the idea of holding a similar event at Ocean Reef. In its first year, 1994, twenty yacht owners accepted her invitation, and Vintage Weekend was born. The following year, vintage automobiles were added with the help of a few slightly passionate members. Together they brought in classic cars, and the famed Concours d’Elegance was born, bringing beautiful classic Rolls Royce, Packards, and Pierce Arrows, among others, to the Club. Shortly thereafter, the weekend’s pièce de résistance was added, as the Ocean Reef Airport Manager recruited aviators. Today, the aerobatic air show over Buccaneer Island attracts spectators from around the world to marvel in sheer amazement. ISSUE 1 . 2017

61

Three dedicated club members make up “The Committee,” a group that for the past twenty years has worked fervently to bring Vintage Weekend to where it is today. What started with vintage yachts has grown into a four-day sold-out celebration complete with social gatherings, costume attire, and this year, nearly 100 antique and classic automobiles, yachts, and aircraft. Whether by land, sea, or air, each conveyance has a particular charm and a very unique history. In any given year, more than 50 vintage and classic cars, 20 airplanes, and at least a dozen wooden boats and yachts converge at The Reef for a one-of-a-kind event in the world of collecting. It’s the only show anywhere in the world where you can see all three categories in such close proximity and represented to this extent. And in addition to all the fun, highlycoveted awards are presented each year to recognize the dedication that members have to their individual hobbies.

62

By Land For people who are passionate about fine automobiles, the event attracts winners from the world’s most prestigious of car shows. Vintage Weekend is renowned for always showcasing the rarest and most coveted automobiles on the planet, and a few notable cars to JETSETMAG.COM

roll through the Ocean Reef Concours are the 1995 Jaguar D-Type Open Racer, awarded with Best of Show; the 1995 Ferrari Alloy Body 250 GT, winner of Best Ferrari; and the Judge’s Choice, 1929 Bentley 4 ½ Liter Touring.

"In any given year, more than 50 vintage and classic cars, 20 airplanes, and at least a dozen wooden boats and yachts converge at The Reef for a truly unique event in the world of collecting."

At the Marina The yachts at Vintage Weekend are always spectacular, antique works of art and testaments to fine engineering, design, and craftsmanship. Attendees can expect to tour some of the finest yachts ever created, their popularity quantified by the massive amounts of shoes sitting dockside throughout the day. People’s Choice this year was The Nymph, a 1913 75’ Matthews; while the Trumpy Award was granted

to Rhino, a 1958 54’ Rybovich; and the Nostalgia Award presented to The Flying Lady, a 1937 57’ Mathis Yacht.

At the Airport For aviation enthusiasts, there is always an impressive collection of meticulously restored, working aircraft to round out the selection of exhibits. This year’s stand out and Best of Show was a 1942 C-47 entitled Placid Lassie. Spectator’s Choice was given to a 1950 NA T-6G, while Most Unusual was presented to the Emigh Trojan. The proud owners of these eye-catching creations are among the hundreds of guests and members who make Vintage Weekend such a lively affair. A Celebration The weekend is also filled with many esteemed social gatherings and memorable themed events. While some of the weekend’s festivities are only open to registered Vintage Weekend participants, many are available to all members. The weekend kicks off Friday with a road rally that motors around The Reef and beyond, culminating with lunch at vintage roadside attraction Alabama Jack’s, while the afternoon sees the Water Shuttle Marina Tours and a grand cocktail reception. Saturday is a daylong celebration of automobiles, yachts, and aircraft. Spectators fill the grandstand early to watch the Concours d’Elegance, a pageant of automotive history (well covered in Jetset),

as well as the stunning Yacht Exhibit. Participating yachts welcome boat lovers to come aboard and take a sentimental voyage without leaving the dock. Later that afternoon, everyone is invited to admire the vintage planes on display during the Aerobatic Air Show & Luncheon at Buccaneer Island. And Saturday night there's a festive dinner dance with live music at Town Hall, while Sunday morning sees show winners honored at a prestigious awards breakfast, followed by a farewell fly-out.

An Experience That's just a taste of what is so special and unique about Vintage Weekend at Ocean Reef Club. It’s a few days, worked toward for decades, in which members, neighbors, friends, and guests come together to share in the pure joy of appreciating the absolute finest in vintage conveyances...and to have a lot of fun. Vintage Weekend is not only a one-of-a-kind experience, it’s also one of the best ways to experience the unique way of life that is Ocean Reef Club. How Darren Dzienciol Built the Hottest Club in LA By ty fahlman

S

ince its opening over two-and-a-half years ago, 1OAK has developed an unassailable reputation as the single hottest nightlife spot in Los Angeles. It’s a place where successful (or privileged) men in their mid-twenties and earlythirties literally line up outside for the “opportunity” to spend $10,000 on a table. It’s a place where Rihanna choses to celebrate her birthday, or Jamie Foxx impulsively grabs the mic for an unforgettable impromptu serenade. And the man largely responsible for it is 30-year-old Darren Dzienciol.

“These musicians, rappers, famous artists, they contact us now asking to perform there… ninety percent of the time, we don’t pay them.” - Darren Dzienciol

“It’s actually...shocking,” Dzienciol (“jen-SH-ol”) tells me about the club he co-owns with renowned nightlife impresario Richie Akiva. “These musicians, rappers, famous artists, they contact us now asking to perform there.” He goes on to point out that “Ninety percent of the time, we don’t pay them. Ninety percent of the time, they just jump on the mic...I have never seen anything like it.” That type of notoriety is something you cannot buy, and Dzienciol knows it well. Upon entrance at the club, you’ll find a neon red sign that reads “Ended Up at 1OAK.” (The slogan can also be found on their Snapchat filters and in myriad social media posts from wild nights there.) The theory is that there is a sense of spontaneity to a journey to 1OAK; it is a place that one somehow finds themselves towards the end of an epic evening. “It’s mystical, adventurous...it sort of takes you into this dark, romantic story of nightlife with the horses and the gorillas,” Dzienciol says. He likens the gorilla artwork to the unbridled male id, the ancient imperative impulses that swell to the surface when it’s 1:30 in the morning and you’ve had five Redbull-vodkas. But while 1OAK unabashedly wears its colors on its sleeve, its owner is far more unassuming than his cacophonous club. He speaks in a soft, calming cadence, and has comforting eyes and a

mischievous-but-inviting closed-mouth smile. I can instantly see how so many people (famous and otherwise) have found themselves drawn to his orbit. A story made the rounds last year in which Rihanna ended up at 1OAK and returned home with an adorable little dog she subsequently named Pepe. “That was my dog,” Dzienciol says of Pepe, “and it wasn’t in the bathroom at 1OAK; it was at my house.” He goes on to point out that “People like that, that we consider family — Rihanna, Leo — we make sure that they can come in the back, free from the press, and they feel like it’s their home.” The origins of Dzienciol’s mythological second home for celebs dates back to his time in the fashion industry. A prodigy of sorts, he would customize sneakers for kids in his high school. Eventually major rappers were coveting his creations and they started popping up in music videos. Before he knew it, he was getting $200,000 to start his own clothing line, one which was very well received, but later went broke when Dzienciol spent all his money going to clubs every night. Convinced he was in the wrong business, he leveraged his reputation as a prescient tastemaker to launch two successful smaller venues, Guy’s and Trousdale, before convincing Akiva (who owned 1OAK New York) that if he gave him a piece of the brand, he would “take it to the next level” in LA. Looking towards the future, Dzienciol saw nightlife headed towards more gigantic, theatrical venues that could afford to pay electronic DJs hundreds of thousands of dollars. The clubs being erected in Vegas and Miami were massive prurient playgrounds, monuments to excess. Yet despite 1OAK LA’s size, Dzienciol wanted to insure it still felt intimate...and special. “Ending up at 1OAK” meant maybe running into a friend you hadn’t seen since high school or meeting the love of your life. “To me it wasn’t just about having the size to have the sort of acts and capacity we wanted,” he says. I get the sense he believes the key to a successful nightclub lies deep in the intangibles and abstracts. It’s about the atmosphere, the feeling, the vibe. He discusses his club in terms not unlike how a filmmaker or visual artist describes their work. It’s less about the angles, the brushstrokes, or the bottle service; it’s all about the feel. He also oversees everything. He makes sure the lighting and sound are perfect and the music is specifically curated to build to an appropriate crescendo. He runs around to every single table, meeting, greeting, and ensuring everyone is enjoying their time. A constant challenge is when a major celebrity texts him and tells him they are five minutes away and he has to quickly find them a table. “I usually have to see if there is anyone we can bump,” he says. (If not, they are of course always welcome to commandeer Dzienciol’s personal table.)

68

Dzienciol sees 1OAK as a long-lasting Hollywood institution, something destined to thrive for generations. “Most nightclubs in LA are lucky if they last six months...we just signed a 20-year lease,” he says. And the brand is undergoing a rapid-but-measured expansion, with such exotic locales as St. Barts, Miami, Tokyo, Dubai, and London on the horizon as well as myriad one-week “pop-ups” during the biggest cultural events around the world, like Cannes or Art Basel or the Super Bowl. (San Tropez, Ibiza, Monaco, Paris: Dzienciol’s recent itinerary resembles the production schedule for the next James Bond film.) Among his many other ventures are Beacher’s Madhouse — the surreal, prurient nightlife experience hidden behind a bookshelf at the Hollywood Roosevelt — and a restaurant he’s developing with Koi mastermind Nick Haque he intends to be the first ever to successfully cater to both foodies and partygoers alike. If that weren’t enough, ten years from now, he envisions himself living in a hotel that he owns. “It would be very cool, but it would be very luxurious,” he says. As with the restaurant, it would be the first of his kind, a place that bridged hip, cool atmosphere and décor with exceptional service and luxury amenities. Some may decry such a project as infeasible, but for Dzienciol, dreaming big has always paid off.

Lessons in Life from a Master Closer By ty fahlman Photography by Jahrel Olson

o

ver the past three decades, Elio Khalife has earned his sterling renown as a master closer in the world of commercial real estate. The founder of First American Investment, LLC, Elio is the guy people bring in when they are having trouble sealing the deal. He’s like Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction; things go wrong, his phone rings. He’s a guy with a golden reputation both personally and professionally — one of the few who had the prescience to get out of the market before the housing bubble burst in 2008 — and a contact list that is seemingly infinite. Wondering how he did it? It just so happens Elio relishes imparting wisdom.

70

JETSETMAG.COM

A man as rich in proverbs as he is in spirit, Elio is always dispensing jewels. “It’s not what you make, it’s what you keep.” “Leave some meat on the bone.” Spend a few hours with this man and you are guaranteed to glean some valuable knowledge. On his desk sits a framed plaque of one of his personal favorite bon mots, a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. “The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going,” it reads. It would seem that for quite some time now, Elio has known precisely where he is going. But for anyone searching for direction, he is happy to offer the following nine pieces of advice… 1. Build Relationships Elio describes the day he got his real estate license as “the day he was born,” and ever since that day he’s been fostering relationships with people across the globe. He has a magnetic way about him; he’s the sort of guy people just want to be around. Everyone knows a guy who “knows everybody,” but mention a name, and odds are Elio knows them and has a great anecdote. The secret? He treats everyone he encounters with respect. From the doorman to the waiter to the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, Elio believes that everyone deserves to be shown the same level of decency.

2. Learn to Focus Your Efforts One of the things Elio noticed before the bubble burst was that too many brokers were becoming developers. “These guys were trying to do something that they didn’t understand, and guess what? They failed.” he says. His advice? Regardless of your industry, pick one thing you know you’re good at and stick with it. As Robert Greene wrote in The 48 Laws of Power, “concentrate your forces.” Don’t allow yourself to get distracted. Elio succeeded where many failed because he refused to overextend himself. 3. Don’t Chase Money, Let Money Chase You One of Elio’s biggest lessons is the importance of persistency, not giving up, but there’s a difference between being persistent and money hungry. According to him, if you build strong relationships, work hard, and stay focused, the money will come naturally — especially if you learn to check your ego at the door. “So many deals get torpedoed when they become pissing contests,” he adds. “Eliminate your ego. Focus on the task at hand and be persistent. Success will follow.” 4. Never Leave the Office Whether he is in his penthouse at CityCenter in Vegas or his beach house in Huntington, the very eligible bachelor is always working... even if no one notices it. “In the car, on the plane, at the gym, at a party: if you really want to be successful then you have to be willing to work everywhere,” he says. “But you absolutely still need to leave time for family.” Elio attributes a lot of his success to the “incredible” job his parents did raising him, so he always sets aside time to spend with his two sons, Andrew and Matthew (the former of which is currently obtaining his real estate license). ISSUE 1 . 2017

71

Altitude // Investment 5. Live Within Your Means When Elio and his former wife were first starting out, they lived in a double-wide trailer. And even when the money started really coming in, he was hesitant to move out. “So many guys just want to be seen — flashy house, flashy car — and if you can afford it, great,” he says. “But don’t get trapped in a lifestyle that you can’t maintain if things go sour.” Elio knows that in business (especially real estate) fortunes can change on a dime, so you should always have your contingency plan in place.

6. Don’t Be Myopic According to Elio, one of the biggest dangers people face in real estate is that they become like Captain Ahab chasing that proverbial white whale while losing sight of everything else. “I would rather make a bunch of small deals than one big one,” he says. At his heyday, Elio was making anywhere from 30 to 50 transactions a year, considerably outperforming those who were losing their hair trying to close one or two big deals. “It always pays to focus on the bigger picture,” he says, “and remember, no one closes everything.” But still, you need to... 7. Learn to Close This one is admittedly hard to teach, as Elio acknowledges that he was born with a gift, but if he can distill the essence of the art of closing — a subject that a few billion books have been written on — he would say that it comes down to trust, comfort, and understanding. “I like to make people comfortable, he says. The truth is, people just want to feel at ease; they want to know they can trust you.” Elio will use humor to ease the tension, making sure people know at the end of the day, it’s just business, and he sees things from their perspective. “And sometimes,” he adds, “people just need a little push. They need permission to say yes.”

72

8. Don’t Get Greedy This ties into his classic quip about leaving meat on the bone. Be happy with enough as opposed to obsessed with too much. “One of the biggest factors that contributed to the crash was that so many guys weren’t satisfied unless they had it all,” he says. “They became consumed by greed.” As a result, Elio watched several of his colleagues commit suicide. “It was heartbreaking,” he says, “There’s so much more to life.” Which brings us to...

9. Pay it Forward At 50 years old, Elio admits he is a much better person today than he was when he first became a millionaire in his twenties. “I had a lot of friends die with a lot of things and not much else,” he says. Perhaps for that reason, over the past few years, he has begun to really focus his efforts on giving back. Elio always tries to help as many people as he can, in whatever capacity he can, and in return, he is happier than he’s ever been. “Remember, our time on this earth is short...enjoy it,” he says with emphasis.

The Benefits of Shared Offices for Your Small Business By Daymond John

74

JETSETMAG.COM

The sense of a community is one of the things I loved most about those early FUBU days. We turned my home into a factory/ headquarters/living space, with raw materials in the basement, production on the main floor, and our office and sleeping areas upstairs. We lived like that for about two years, and you certainly feel a bond with your employees when you see each other every single day. I imagine it’s how all the tech startups running their business out their houses in Silicon Valley feel. I imagine it’s how Steve Jobs and the Apple guys felt back in the day. But like I said, for your business to truly be a business, eventually you have to take the next step. And if you still want to feel that sense of unity, but look professional and save money, I love the shared option. What it does is it allows you to work alongside other startup companies in the same space. This constant networking can pay off big-time for your business, but beyond that, it allows everyone to feed off of each other’s creativity. You can see what works for other businesses and what doesn’t. Co-working spaces foster interaction while giving you a peek at what other companies of comparable size are doing.

I

f your business is really a business, then you have employees. And if you have enough employees, then you have to have an office. On Shark Tank, Kevin is always talking about the difference between a business and a hobby. Well an office is a pretty good way to make the distinction. It’s the difference between when I was knitting hats alone in my living room and actually running FUBU with a team of people on each floor of my house. At the time, I ran the business out of my house out of necessity and as a way to save money. Why pay a high price for office space if I don’t have to? I thought. But nowadays, there is another option for small business owners. It’s called co-working spaces, or shared office spaces. One of the hottest new trends in the business world, here’s how it works. Basically you pay for memberships (the prices of which vary based on the size of your business) at large communal office spaces, typically in urban and metropolitan areas. A far cry from those awful, brain-draining, florescent-lit cubicle farms people associate with large workspaces, these are usually in cool, modern buildings. They have nice new furniture, lots of large windows, and a layout specifically designed for one purpose...to foster interaction.

As you may have heard, I had an opportunity to invest in Uber a while back and regretfully passed. It kills me to this day because I pride myself in being able to see trends and knowing when something might be the next big thing. But in my opinion, co-working spaces are the way of the future, and I want to be a part of it in some way. I love the concept so much that I am launching my own shared office space, blueprint + co, in Midtown Manhattan this year. I want it to be a place where like-minded entrepreneurs can work alongside one another, sharing ideas, helping each other along the way. I also want it to be an affordable and accessible option for entrepreneurs. I will never forget what it felt like when I was first struggling to make it with FUBU. We did the home factory/office out of necessity, but I wish there was something like this available. I am truly confident that blueprint + co is going to be fantastic, but regardless of where you are or which one you choose, I strongly urge all small business owners to consider the shared office option. Working with young and new entrepreneurs has been perhaps the greatest thing to come out of Shark Tank. I get inspired and encouraged by their passion and creativity with every interaction. The best thing I can do is give them the proper tools to succeed. ISSUE 1 . 2017

UNDERSTANDING COMPOUND INTEREST AND NEGATIVE INTEREST RATES BY KEN MCELROY

T

76

JETSETMAG.COM

here is perhaps nothing more important to understand than interest rates if you are going to retire comfortably. Interest rates are one of the most integral components of the American economic system. They influence the cost of borrowing, the return on savings, and are an important component of the total yield of many investments. Moreover, certain interest rates provide insight into future economic and financial market activity. In essence, interest rates control the flow of money in the economy.

I never understood why people would pour their hard-earned savings into a bank account when the interest on the account is less than one percent. If you have $10,000 dollars in the bank making one half of one percent on your $10,000 savings account, it is generating you just $50 dollars a year, or less than $5 dollars a month. Theoretically, at the end of one year you should have $10,050 on your bank statement; however, what is happening at the exact same time is that prices are rising while the purchasing power of your savings account is declining or inflating away. In other words, inflation is taking away from your savings progress. (Check out the year-by year inflation figures at USInflationCalculator.com.) So, using that same example, the $10,050 in your savings account actually only buys about $9,700 worth of stuff, and so on, year after year. Most people are going backwards each year and don’t even know it (in this case, 2.5% or a negative $250 dollars each year). I wish I would have learned this at an earlier age. I don’t know about you, but for years I wasn’t getting ahead financially and inflation

was wiping out any progress I was making in my savings account each year. I would look at my bank statement and see more money, but I didn’t correlate it to rising gas prices, rising rent costs, rising food prices, and so forth. I was falling behind for years until I finally figured out about compound interest. One of the ultimate tools in making money is the ability to use compound interest for compound growth. Albert Einstein famously stated: “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it...he who doesn’t...pays it.” Compound growth means your interest earns interest. When you have a growing thing which creates more growing things, which in turn creates more growing things…your return adds up fast. There are numerous ways to earn more interest on your hard earned money than in a savings account, you just need to educate ISSUE 1 . 2017

yourself. The banks know this. They take the money in your savings account that pays you one half of one percent and loan it out at a higher rate and then make the difference. That’s the bank loan you might use to buy a car or a house. They give you less than one percent for keeping it with them and lend it to others for six percent to buy a car. That’s how they make their money. In this instance, they make over five percent on your money annually. It sounds crazy, but in this example, the savers are the losers. How do you combat this? Just start thinking like the banks. Start trying to figure out how you can put your own money to work to earn a higher rate. Even better, think about how you can use other people’s money (OPM) and earn an even higher rate. This is exactly what my partner Ross and I do on a daily basis. We find investments that produce high returns and ask people to participate in them. Most of my investors do not want much money in savings accounts because they barely makes them any money. They are constantly looking for better ways to invest because they understand compound interest. Now let me throw a twist at you. Have you heard of negative interest rates? Well they may be coming soon to a neighborhood near you. Imagine that banks have to pay a fee to keep their deposits. These are called negative interest rates. Did you know that in Denmark homeowners are now receiving checks each month because their mortgages have negative interest rates? A negative interest rate means the lender is paying the borrower to borrow money from them — basically, borrowers get paid and savers get penalized. Yes, once again, the savers are the losers. The Bank of Japan, the European Central Bank, and several smaller European authorities have ventured into the once-uncharted

territory of negative interest rates. There is speculation that one day the U.S may do the same. If this happens, savers will be the losers yet again. This is why your financial education is so important. So what does a negative deposit rate accomplish, and why do it? In theory, it pushes down short-term rates on other types of lending as it is supposed to provide an economic boost. The idea is that people will borrow to buy things which is good for the economy; however, it can also weaken the country’s currency. Going back to the original interest rate discussion, low rates typically make investors try to move their money to places where interest rates are higher, and when they do this, they sell their currency and buy what that makes them more. (The same applies with positive interest rates.) So how can you stay on top of all this? Well, in the 1990s, former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan remarked that if he could only view one indicator to gauge the health of the economy, it would be the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rate. Why is this rate so important? One reason is that it is the rate most closely tied to mortgage rates and mortgages are a significant part of the economy. In addition, when fear rises, investors tend to sell their risky assets (i.e. stocks) and buy safe assets (i.e. U.S. Treasury bonds), and the 10-year Treasury is one of the most popular. Therefore, when fear rises, demand for Treasuries increases, pushing their price higher and yield lower. In summation, you really need to pay attention to what’s happening with your money and what it is earning you today. You need to be sure to make prudent moves in the future; your retirement depends on it. Don’t just turn it over to anyone, even a financial planner, without completely understanding how it is invested and how it is doing. Too many people are so busy that they barely spend time opening and reviewing their statements. Make this a priority and you will be glad you did. JETSETMAG.COM

THE SECRET TO ANY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS BY BARRY LABOV

W

ith an ever-increasing number of choices available to us these days, holding on to loyal customers is more challenging than ever. While that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to build loyalty, it does mean that companies must try harder to deliver a customer experience that promotes satisfaction. With so many products that offer many of the same features and benefits, it’s the experience with a particular product and brand that can differentiate it.

82

JETSETMAG.COM

“It can be anywhere from five to 25 times more expensive to acquire new customers than it is to keep existing ones.” There is all kinds of research that supports the value of investing in customer loyalty. Depending on the industry and the source, it can be anywhere from five to 25 times more expensive to acquire new customers than it is to keep existing ones. Not only that, the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 to 70 percent while the probability of selling to a prospect is only five to 20 percent. According to these stats, the bottom line looks a lot better with repeat, loyal customers. So the research supports the value of a loyal customer, but how does a company go about encouraging loyalty from its customer base? One of the most important ways is delivering on your customer promise. Most brands have a customer promise — an agreement between a company and its customers. Oftentimes it’s a collection of “we will” statements: “we will treat you fairly,” “we will deliver a quality product,” and so on. The customer promise is what separates a company from its competition and why customers should consider doing business with them. The customer experience is dependent upon how well a company fulfills its promise. For smart brands, that means not setting the bar too high because failure to fulfill a customer promise is one of the fastest ways to lose loyal customers. Therefore, formulating a customer promise

must be a careful and thoughtful process. It requires examining what steps customers go though in doing business with a company; identifying every point of interaction, including the “pain points” where the experience is less than stellar; and then addressing those points in the customer promise and committing to making the customer experience a pleasant one. According to a 2015 Gallup poll, the highest-performing companies deliver on their brand promises only 75% of the time. Whether or not a company fulfills its brand promise depends on those who are on the front lines and are expected to deliver that promise: your employees. If your employees aren’t on board with and equipped to deliver your customer promise, then it’s nothing more than a collection of words with no meaning or substance behind them. A brand promise also is not a “set it and forget it” kind of thing. It takes periodic re-evaluation to ensure it remains relevant to the customer and is something employees are able to consistently fulfill. If you do happen to stray from it or make a mistake, it is important to quickly correct it until customers are satisfied. And remember, customers who are dissatisfied are actually an opportunity to expand your loyal customer base. Studies have shown that dissatisfied customers made satisfied are actually more loyal than customers who were never dissatisfied. So it pays to go out of your way to satisfy a disgruntled customer. Customer loyalty can be rated based on the level of customer engagement. Frederick Reichheld of Bain & Company developed the Net Promoter score, an index made up of three different kinds of customers: promoters, passives, and detractors. Promoters are loyal enthusiasts who keep buying and referring others to a brand. Passives are customers who are satisfied, but unenthusiastic and more likely to jump to a different brand. Detractors are unhappy customers who can damage a brand through negative word-ofmouth. The more promoters a brand has, the more likely it will outperform its competitors and remain a strong brand. They are a company’s most engaged audience and have a strong, emotional attachment to a brand. The investment made in promoting customer loyalty pays off in repeat and additional purchases, as well as referrals — all of which positively impact a company’s bottom line. Those who remain true to their company’s brand promises deliver customer experiences that create confidence and satisfaction with their products, which in turn leads to greater loyalty. Promoting customer loyalty is time well-spent and an investment that pays off exponentially. And it’s absolutely essential for a company’s survival in today’s competitive marketplace. ISSUE 1 . 2017

THE TRUTH ABOUT TAXES

BY ROBERT KIYOSAKI

D

uring the 2012 election, the candidates’ tax rates provided fodder for discussion… on taxes. President Obama reported he paid 20.5% in taxes and Governor Romney disclosed he paid 13.9%. Many believe this difference in effective tax rates was the final nail in the coffin for Romney’s bid for the presidency. During the 2016 election, Donald Trump never released his tax returns, and won. Which begs the question: Did our new president learn from Romney’s mistake?

Now let me ask a few questions. How much did you pay in taxes last year? What was your effective tax rate? If you made millions and you could pay less in taxes, would you? Do you? Personally, I found it interesting that many Americans got angry rather than inspired to get educated. If I were an angry American, I would want to learn how to make millions and pay less in taxes. In this article, I will do my best to explain how Romney and Trump do it, and if you haven’t learned already, how you can too. Taxes are an emotional subject. Many Americans believe paying taxes is patriotic, yet most forget that America was born out of a tax revolt, the Boston Tea Party, a protest against British taxation. Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 of the Constitution assigns Congress the power to impose taxes, but for years, America was a virtually tax-free country, with income taxes being raised only during times of war. As part of the Revenue Act of 1913, Congress enacted an income tax to help finance World War I. The problem is, the temporary tax became a permanent one — along with the belief that taxes are patriotic. The Current Tax Payment Act granted the IRS the power to take taxes from an employee’s paycheck. In other words, the government got paid before the employee got paid. And the employer, the entrepreneur, had “wiggle room,” time to take appropriate steps to legally minimize the amount of tax paid. In other words, if you are an employee, with W-2 income, there is very little you can do. For employees who need tax assistance, mass-market tax preparer tools—like H&R Block or Turbo Tax — will do. Employers, entrepreneurs, and business owners require more sophisticated counsel and strategies, a higher level of tax advice. My personal tax advisor, Tom Wheelwright, is the smartest CPA I have met, and I have met many. Tom specializes in tax strategies for entrepreneurs. The best thing about Tom is he is a great teacher, keeping tax and taxation simple enough for an entrepreneur like me to understand. His book, Tax-Free Wealth, is a must-read for entrepreneurs who want to earn more — and keep more of the money they earn by reducing the taxes they pay. If you believe you are paying more than your fair share in taxes, you may want to read the book and then have your accountant read it and begin a heart-toheart discussion. ISSUE 1 . 2017

Altitude // Finance KISS: Keeping It Super Simple For those who may not have read my book Rich Dad Poor Dad, my rich dad was my best friend’s father who began teaching his son and I about business, money, and entrepreneurship when we were only nine years old. Pictured below is my rich dad’s CASHFLOW Quadrant. It’s a simple diagram my rich dad used to explain the world of money to us.

In the diagram, “E” stands for employee; “S” stands for small business, self-employed, or specialists, like a doctor or lawyer; “B” stands for big business (one with 500 employees or more); and “I” stands for professional investor vs. passive investor. Passive investors are individuals who have 401(k), IRA, Roth IRA, or a pension plan and tend to invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs. Notice the employee in the E-quadrant pays approximately 40% in taxes while the professional investor in the I quadrant may pay 0% in taxes. By the way, these percentages are worldwide. I state this because Tom and I teach all over the world, and no matter where we are, someone always stands up and says, “You can’t do that here.” Obviously, the people who say this earn their income in the E or S quadrants. In most cases, these are the same people who get upset with Romney and Trump. Another way to look at the CASHLFOW Quadrant is to overlay our political leaders on the quadrant.

Taxes Are Fair Another comment Tom and I often hear is: “Taxes are not fair.” Tom’s reply is, “Taxes are fair. Tax laws are available to everyone, rich or poor. Anyone can pay 0% in taxes, if they do what the people in the I quadrant do. The problem is, our educational system trains people to work in the E and S quadrants, not the B and I quadrants. Taxes begin when a parent says to a child, “Go to school and get a job.” The student, following this advice, winds up in the E quadrant. Or, if the parent advises the child to “Go to school and become a doctor,” that student often winds up working in the S quadrant. JETSETMAG.COM

“Once upon a time… all a person had to do was go to school, get a job, work hard, save money, buy a house, get out of debt, invest for the long term in the stock market... and live happily ever after. The problem is: This fairy tale is over.” - Robert Kiyosaki

“You Can’t Do That Here” When Tom hears this, he agrees that you can’t pay less in taxes from the E or S quadrants. If the person wants to pay less in taxes, that person needs to change quadrants. For example, one of Tom’s clients is a medical doctor in California. The doctor was happy because he finally grossed over $1 million. The problem was, he paid nearly 70% in taxes. To reduce his taxes, the medical doctor bought a large office building and began renting medical offices to other doctors. In other words, he kept his job in the S quadrant and also became a professional real estate investor in the I quadrant. Today, he is making much more money because he has a supplemental rental income. On top of grossing more, his effective tax rate is now around 18%...in the same category as Romney and Trump.

88

Tax Incentives Tom points out that the tax code is not about paying taxes. Ninety percent of the thousands of pages of tax code are about how to pay less in taxes. Tom has taught me that the government offers tax incentives to anyone who will partner with them. For example, the entrepreneur in the B quadrant pays less in taxes because he or she and their business is creating jobs. The government wants people to create jobs, not look for them. The real estate investor in the I quadrant pays less in taxes because the government wants entrepreneurs to provide housing and use debt to finance their properties. The government wants people to own their home, so there are also tax incentives for homeowners, and they want you to be charitable, so most donations are tax deductible. Again, most of the tax code is not about paying taxes, its about partnering with the government to do what they want done. Look at it this way. An employer offers an employee overtime if they work harder. The overtime pay is an incentive. For the affluent JETSETMAG.COM

in the B and I quadrants, the government offers tax incentives: the opportunity to pay less in taxes. These incentives are not loopholes. They are not accidents, waiting for a clever person to cheat the government. The tax code is made up of thousands of pages because there are thousands of ways to partner with the government. It is up to you to decide if you want to do it. Paying less in taxes is patriotic. (Unless of course you actually are cheating on your taxes, which is simply unacceptable.)

Final Word on Taxes Who pays the highest percentage in taxes? The answer to that question is found in the three types of income. Passive Income pays the least in taxes, possibly 0%. Portfolio Income, or capital gains, pays the second least in taxes, approximately 20%. And Ordinary Income pays the highest. People who have a job and earn a paycheck work for Ordinary Income. Interest from savings or a 401(k) is taxed as Ordinary Income. In other words, many of the people who got angry at Romney and Trump are the people who work, save, and invest for ordinary income. And most of these people are decent, hard-working Americans who believe they are doing their civic duty. But if they learn to switch the types of income they earn by partnering with the government, they can make more money while being truly patriotic. Best known as the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad — the #1 personal finance book of all time — Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world think about money. He is an entrepreneur, educator, and investor who believes that each of us has the power to makes changes in our lives, take control of our financial future, and live the rich life we deserve. With perspectives on money and investing that often contradict conventional wisdom, Robert has earned an international reputation for straight talk, irreverence, and courage and has become a passionate and outspoken advocate for financial education.

THE NEXT CHAPTER BY TY FAHLMAN

ome actors end up being largely defined by a singular role. They play a character who is so iconic, so beloved, so universally popular, that it becomes forever associated with their name. Sean Connery and James Bond. Marlon Brando and The Godfather. Matt Damon and Jason Bourne. For some, this can become a curse — as dramatized in the movie Birdman — but in the case of Hugh Jackman and Wolverine, the 48 year-old Australian has always chosen to embrace the role that made him a superstar, gamely portraying the iconic mutant a staggering nine times in the last 16 years, beefing up and giving his all with every turn.

But all good things must inevitably come to an end, and so with the release of the latest (and final?) Wolverine film (Logan, out March 1st), the actor has announced that he has donned the claws for the final time. “It was a gut feeling,” he says of the decision, and as he approaches his fifth decade on earth, the level of strenuous devotion and the physical toll portraying of muscle-bound genetic anomaly takes on one’s body has begun to take its toll. “I don’t know how many more egg white omelettes I can eat,” he confesses. But regardless of the reasons, it is time to forge the next chapter in what, upon re-examination, is an objectively illustrious career. ISSUE 1 . 2017

Altitude // Cover Feature Growing up, Jackman dreamed of traveling the world (“I used to spend nights looking at atlases,” he says). As fate would have it, in college, on a whim, he would discover his ticket. “As a boy, I’d always had an interest in theatre,” he says. But, thinking it “wasn’t something [he] could make a living out of,” Jackman never actually pursued his passion until he began taking drama classes his Senior Year. Realizing how much he enjoyed it, upon graduation, he enrolled in a one-year course entitled “The Journey” at the Actors’ Centre in Sydney, which actually landed him a part on the beloved Aussie soap Neighbours. Yet, unlike fellow Jetset cover star Margot Robbie — who used the show to springboard her career — Jackman felt he needed more time to hone his newfound craft, and turned the role down. “When I started at drama school I was like the dunce of the class,” he recalls, “it just wasn’t coming right to me.” But Jackman is a man who relishes in working hard to achieve one’s goals, and loved the idea of feeling like an underdog back then. “I think it is good to come from behind as an actor,” he says. “I think it is good to go into an audition thinking ‘Man I’ve got to be at my best to get this gig.’” So he allowed the craft to consume him, tirelessly devoting himself to becoming a better actor while in Perth. By the time he graduated, he had made major inroads, and on the night of his final performance, received a call offering him a role on a new TV series. The call was more fortuitous than Jackman could have ever imagined. While the show only lasted 10 episodes, it was on set that he met his wife of 20 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, and it led to a series of well-received turns on the stage and in Australian films and TV. But the actor would not gain renown outside of his native land until he played the lead in a West End London

“I think it is good to come from behind as an actor. I think it is good to go into an audition thinking ‘Man I’ve got to be at my best to get this gig.’” production of Oklahoma! For his work, Jackman would win an Olivier award. Then, when the man initially cast as Wolverine — Scottish actor Dougray Scott — dropped out to play the villain in Mission: Impossible II, it left producers scrambling to find a suitable replacement. Gladiator-era Russell Crowe declined the role, but suggested director Bryan Singer consider his fellow Aussie Jackman, who had auditioned months prior. Back in 2000 (pre-Spider-Man, Avengers, and Dark Knight) superhero films were long-since declared dead, and in many ways, the original X-Men was a gamble, an attempt to rekindle a once-mighty genre. But the film was a hit — grossing four times its $75 million budget worldwide and eventually spawning eight sequels and spinoffs — and Jackman stole the show. Making the most of his limited dialogue, the actor possessed the confidence, charm, and sarcastic wit of a bygone era. As Wolverine, he radiated a hyper-masculine intensity, a charisma reminiscent of a young Clint Eastwood or Steve McQueen. Hollywood had found its next big leading man.

Les Miserables (2012, Universal Pictures)

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016, 20th Century Fox)

Logan (2017, 20th Century Fox)

“I’m really, really proud of this movie. I was really keen that I didn’t leave the party feeling like I could dance more. I think I’m pretty much danced out, and I had a great time.” However, to avoid getting typecast as a stoic action hero, Jackman made sure his subsequent roles showcased his unique range. He played a hacker in the techno-action/thriller Swordfish, and a time-traveling Victorian English duke in the romantic comedy Kate & Leopold (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination). He won a Tony for his work on Broadway in The Boy from Oz, and hosted the awards (as well as the Oscars), to much acclaim. And in 2012, he won a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nomination for his virtuoso performance as Jean Valjean in Les Mis. It’s hard to name actors who possess Jackman’s skill set. His ability to sing, dance, and be both a convincing action hero and powerful dramatic actor place him in a unique class in cinematic history. Even in a film like the overstuffed, failed franchise attempt Van Helsing, the convoluted noir Deception, or the uneven throwback epic Australia, Jackman gives his all, doing the best to endow each character with as much depth and pathos imaginable. This is particularly evident when he plays Wolverine; even in the horrendous first solo Wolverine film, his charisma is undeniably captivating. Still, it would seem that with Logan, the actor was determined to go harder and further than he ever has with the character — not just physically, but emotionally as well. If you’ve watched the brilliant first trailer, then you know it is an atypical X-Men film. The first and only picture in the franchise to be rated R, the tone is serious,

somber, and yet despite its post-apocalyptic setting, resoundingly hopeful. The movie centers on an older, grizzled Logan (Wolverine’s real name) who through unforeseen circumstances, joins forces with a young mutant girl for one last shot at moral redemption. Of course he kicks ass, but this feels like something far more existential, uncompromising, and, dare I say, profound. It also offers the perfect sendoff for the beloved character. “I’m really, really proud of this movie,” Jackman says. “I was really keen that I didn’t leave the party feeling like I could dance more. I think I’m pretty much danced out, and I had a great time.” As the film’s director James Mangold (Walk the Line) tells it, Jackman actually took a pay cut so that the film could maintain its R rating, and he strived to ensure that he delivered something that would not just satisfy the millions of fans of the character, but his perfectionist self as well. As for the future, Jackman seems determined to continue seeking parts that test the limits of his tremendous talent. (He is currently shooting six days a week for his role as P.T. Barnum in the ambitious upcoming biographical musical, The Greatest Show On Earth.) And when asked if he has any regrets about leaving behind the role forever synonymous with his name, he is quick to say, “It’s been an unbelievable ride...but [walking away] feels right.” Let’s hope the next chapter is no less unbelievable.

CAN YOUR ATTIRE REALLY IMPACT THE LIFE YOU LIVE? BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI 96

JETSETMAG.COM

I

n the early summer of 1978, I was 23 years of age. I had just completed my bachelor’s at the University of Houston, and as I was about to enter professional school, I acquired a part-time job working in the men’s apparel department of a major chain department store. Before that time, men’s fashion and suits were not exactly a focus of mine, yet the job opportunity was conveniently located, and I needed the money. Upon being hired, I was required to purchase and wear one of the suits I was selling.

And from the moment I put it on, I instantaneously felt a profound change. I noticed a difference in the way I felt and acted, as well as the way other people I interacted with responded to me. I found myself behaving more maturely and in a more professional manner, and in turn, I was treated with more intrigue and respect. Because I was upgrading my image on the outside, it assisted myself and others’ perception of an upgrade on the inside. It was quite remarkable — there was certainly a distinct difference in the many immediate responses I received. Until that time, I had little understanding about how the simple selection of clothing could impact a person’s life. As I passed through my next four years of advanced professional schooling and eventually attained my doctorate, I wore the nicest clothes and suites I could afford each day. This decision had a further impact upon the way I viewed myself as well as how my peers and

patients viewed me. I think I was the only student that never missed a day wearing a suit, or at least a tie and slacks. I did not want to wait to the end my professional training to suddenly become dressed like a professional. I wanted to prepare my mind along the way for the new role and fully own it; I wanted to exemplify the position from the beginning. And in turn I truly believe that I received many clinical opportunities that others missed out on. After I graduated with honors, became licensed, and opened up my first private practice, I chose to attend a Robert Pante´ Salon on professional image for achieving greater success. I learned a lot from Robert. He transformed the outer appearances and the inner self-images of the attendees to match their desired outcomes in life, and I watched their achievements emerge within the months that followed. Our personal presentations impacted both our outcomes and incomes. ISSUE 1 . 2017

Altitude // Inspire Although there are seven areas of life we are able and desire to master (and each serves and empowers us further along our life’s journey), quality clothes certainly impact our opportunities and achievements along the way. Quality clothes bring capital gains that pay dividends, and these dividends impact and enhance all seven areas. Since my first encounter with that new department store suit, I have consciously made it part of my brand to dress well and to inspire others to live well and do the same. I have also gone on to invest in more refined apparel with higher-quality fabrics, feels, and affects. It has been one of the great action steps I have made in my life. Once I valued myself, more in the world valued my services. So if you asked me the following two questions: “Does wearing quality clothes make any significant difference in your life?” and, “Would it be wise to invest in quality clothes over quantity clothes?” I would say emphatically, yes. Although there are many investments in life that pay great returns — chiefly, education and mentorship — how we present ourselves stands out as one which we all can prosper from. Today I still consistently wear quality stylish suits made of quality fabrics with quality feels. The way I see it, the costs

At Robert’s suggestion, I went to my closet and threw out any clothes that did not make me feel like a higher-achieving professional and multi-millionaire. This amazing act was truly liberating. Although I had fewer clothes, I had those that catalyzed a different and more empowered me and a different and more inspiring response from others. I then hired a personal shopper to assist me in purchasing a higher standard and quality of clothes that matched my life mission, vision, and long-term brand ambition. I immediately could tell the difference in the fabric feel and the fit and styling. It was remarkable and inspiring to see, feel, and receive the benefits of this difference. It was not an expense to me; it was an investment in my future. And it certainly paid off handsomely. Within a week, I received some great new publicity, the opportunity to have my first TV show, an expansion in my practice volume, and a different response from my patients, peers, and social and professional networks. There was no way I was not going to take advantage of the power of the new look and feel. It was another simple key to the advancement and progression of my professional life goals.

are insignificant compared to their returns. I sometimes overdress for occasions but the feeling I get from surrounding my body with finely tailored clothing that has been designed and created by those that love what they do leaves a lasting effect on my accomplishments and my interactions with others. So when you are considering your next purchase of apparel, consider quality selections more than quantity purchases. A few masterpieces that awaken your uniqueness and feelings of an elevated personal standard will rub off on your overall achievements and lead to greater fulfillment in life. Today my fashionista daughter Breccia Aurora Demartini (profiled on Page 22) and I have carried on my original tradition of wearing and appreciating finely crafted clothes and my love for quality apparel to help ourselves and others have higher quality lives. And it is in that spirit that I say, may the masterpieces you wear inspire the masterpiece you live. Altitude // Motivation

How to Remain Motivated Through Success

I

LINDA HENLEY-SMITH

know about heat. After all, I live in Phoenix. Before I was born, my parents chose to move here from the East, and they did so in July. I believe the reason they stopped here in the desert is because they didn’t have enough gas to make it to the face of the sun. This past summer the temperature reached 120 degrees and it felt like I was sitting in a 500 degree oven while someone was blowing a hot hair dryer into my mouth. Rather than running, roadrunners were taking buses and lizards sizzled when they stretched out on rocks. Although this is what we usually think about when the word “heat” is mentioned, there is another kind of heat that is vital if we are to accomplish goals, move ahead, continue to grow personally and professionally, and most importantly, just enjoy life. I call it the heat of enthusiasm. It’s the kind of heat that fuels our creativity and keeps us from getting stuck in a rut. Conversely, it is this heat that also keeps us from experiencing burnout. It’s easy to lose that spark when we stay in the same place too long, or work isn’t going the way we expected, or we don’t feel like we are getting anywhere, and so on. Mainly, burnout is just that...proof that the fires of enthusiasm have flamed out. ISSUE 1 . 2017

101

Altitude // Motivation on what you don’t have, you overlook what you do have. How does feeling grateful for your blessings help make you more enthusiastic? For one thing, when you focus on your abilities, talents, friends, health, or anything positive in your life, you have a starting point. Rather than to take the good things in your life for granted, celebrate them. Gratitude is a positive feeling from which enthusiasm can grow.

Fake it ‘til you make it. Positivity and enthusiasm for life are habits. It is a matter of how we train our brains to think about things. When you memorize a song, the words get stuck in your head. In order to learn different words to that same tune, you have to repeat the new verses many times until they replace the old ones. The same concept applies to our attitudes. Sometimes you have to act enthusiastic until the feeling kicks in. It’s not about acting phony; it’s about knocking out those negative thoughts and replacing them with something more positive. Here’s the thing: if you’re still alive, you still have a purpose. Unless your chosen purpose is to be a speed bump or a door stop, it’s helpful to have some enthusiasm about what you’re doing. So how do we stir the ashes of burnout and fan the flames of enthusiasm?

Embrace your creativity. Everyone can be creative, though many will say they are not. If you have an imagination, you are creative. Since creativity is essential to enthusiasm, step out of your comfort zone and try being innovative in whatever you are doing. Wake up dormant creativity by getting in touch with your inner child. The more successful you become, the more you need to remember to stop thinking like a grown-up and try new things. Don’t allow the adult in you to smother the child-like curiosity you need to keep enthusiasm alive. And don’t forget to laugh. A lot. If you think this makes you less professional, you are wrong. There is a reason why many very sucessful people attend expensive workshops to simply learn how to be more creative through play. Maintain an attitude of gratitude. Although the phrase may be overworked, the concept is definitely a worthy one. When you focus

102

JETSETMAG.COM

Be reasonable and evolve. Nothing will squash your spirit like making unreasonable goals. You lose your momentum and your enthusiasm bites the dust. If you are excited about embarking on a fitness regimen and expect to have a whole new body in two weeks, you are setting yourself up for a big let-down. Let your expectations evolve and fuel them enthusiastically…with logical thinking. Remember that you are constantly evolving. Explore your opportunities. Imagining future possibilities will stoke the fire of your enthusiasm.

Surround yourself with positive people. It’s not easy to remain enthusiastic about anything if you are with people who constantly try to shoot down your excitement. Don’t let anyone drag you down into the pit of despair. Sadly, there are those whose hobby is complaining, and they only feel comfortable if they have pity partners. Don’t go there. Even if you have negative trolls in one part of your life, make sure you also keep some joyful people around you. Make sure you keep moving forward with excited anticipation. Don’t keep looking back on past mistakes or failures. That gets you nowhere in a hurry. Remember that bubbling with enthusiasm doesn’t mean being agitated and impatient. Enthusiasm should keep you motivated, but also provide you with a sense of peace. Keep fanning the flames.

The New Hampshire-born realtor was always an active person — she played soccer growing up and exercised regularly — but once she began pursuing fitness full time, it felt like a revelation. She loved channeling her restless determination into something tangible, and once she began assisting others, she knew she had discovered her true calling. Today she takes pride in working hard to help everyone from new mothers to senior citizens achieve the body and mindset they desire. “I feel for them,” she says, “I also have gone through a transformation [Jaime lost over 20 pounds when she started competing], so it’s very exciting to see them so happy and proud.” Jaime, a BPI Sports sponsored athlete, offers a number of comprehensive, targeted meal plans and programs online (like “Glutes of Steel”) and loves assisting people who are training for bikini and fitness competitions, but her biggest pride comes from working oneon-one to directly help improve people’s lives. She shares the story of a woman who recently came to her who had battled cancer and was having a very difficult time losing weight. “She was at a point of frustration and near despair,” Jaime says. She describes assisting the woman through her transformation as “one of the most gratifying experiences of my life.” Another major life highlight for Jaime was competing to become Miss Jetset. Her fierce competitive nature meant she wasn’t intimidated by the 12,000-plus women in the competition, and she says she was “honored to raise money for an organization like the B+ Foundation that does such amazing work for children.” When asked if it was bittersweet to go so far in the competition, only to come up one spot short of the title, she says she has no regrets: “All the women in the Top 5 were incredible and worked very hard; I was happy to finish among them.” Jaime is about as classy as they come.

How the TAG TECSLATE ™ is Revolutionizing Business By Matthew Von Daven

I

f you are a loyal Jetset reader, you probably already have an idea of what the TAG TECSLATE ™ is and what it can do for you and your everyday business needs. We have run multiple stories about this incredible piece of technology, and the device has become an important staple in our boardroom and our creative meetings. The challenge behind describing this device is to show its many features so it doesn’t only look like a television or a big tablet, because a picture doesn’t do it justice.

“There is no better device currently on the market at this price point that compares to the TECSLATE.” - John Lek, SVP and General Manager of the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum

Calling the TAG TECSLATE™ a “tablet” is like calling a Bugatti a “car.” Its rich collection of innovative features and advanced software put it squarely above its “competitors.” TECSLATE Pro Interactive Software is the ultimate collaboration software, allowing you to annotate and collaborate from multiple locations, and all changes to documents, images, and spreadsheets can be saved directly in the program. SplitView Screen Partitioning Software enables a true multi-monitor experience, terminal services, remote desktop access, as well as other visualization and thin client technologies. The TAG TECSLATE’s multitude of revolutionary features and functions have revolutionized the way people do business in the 21st Century. “I was in search for a cutting edge, interactive, game changing technology that was versatile for the many various needs for my clientele and came across the TAG TECSLATE,” says John Lek, SVP and General Manager of the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum. “There is no better device currently on the market at this price point that compares to the TECSLATE.” Countless CEOs have given similar

The TAG TECSLATE’s revolutionary Digital Signage Software can be used to both inform and advertise. There are several key benefits in opting for digital signs over traditional static signs — mainly, the ability to update content remotely over the web, adapt different screens to different viewers, and even interact with your local audience. And tablet/laptop screen mirroring enables you to wirelessly share videos, music, photos, web pages, and many different types of documents from your phone, tablet, or laptop to the TAG TECSLATE™ with the greatest of ease. Many businesses today have adopted video conferencing in order to do work via remote staff. The TAG TECSLATE™ is designed around anticipation of telecommuter growth for mobile technology. According to Jessica Foreman of Oil Industries, the TECSLATE Pro has increased their meeting productivity by 28 percent, and Unlimited Gym President Darren Thomas says the TECSLATE Pro has reduced his travel expenses by 40 percent. It’s impossible to fully articulate our love for this device. After spending over a year with it, we find it hard to imagine going back to the old way of doing business. That would be like giving up our new iPhone 7s for flip phones. No, the future is here. We encourage you to get on board.

THE RISE OF CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ART BY JOSEPH MANQUEROS AND MARC BOLLANSEE

T

112

JETSETMAG.COM

he contemporary Chinese art boom was initially fueled by the interest of Western collectors and museums captivated by the Chinese appropriation and interpretation of Western art forms. Many of these works were infused with the artists’ experiences of the Cultural Revolution and their personal tragedies. At the forefront of the movement were outstanding pioneers like the painters Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, and Yue Minjun.

In the early Nineties there was also an underground scene in small artistic communities where artists experimented with new ways of expression like performance and photography in order to visualize social problems. The generation that was born after the Cultural Revolution has totally different concerns that vary from cartoons and video games to more intimate personal interpretations of their social conditions. Globalization, consumerism, and urbanization all very strongly influenced a new generation that embraced new media. Lately there has been a strong revival of abstract art in the West, which has been noticed by the Chinese who focus on new forms of geometrical abstraction that are often tinged with conceptual aspirations. Some artists have renewed their interest for calligraphy, finding ways to reinvent this specific Chinese art form, and in some cases, even combining it with new media. There has also been a real U-turn in the mentality of artists who understand that they live in a highly complex world upon which they need to reflect with their cultural tradition, open minds, and high sensitivity. The issues they address relate to and echo the lives and interests of people all over the world.

Sun Xun, 21K-50, Pastel on canvas, 2010, 100 x 140 cm

Xu Zhen, Eternity, Sculpture in sandstone, artificial stone and fiberglass, 2013, 288 x 75 x 60 cm

Moreover, the environment they live in represents the future world that is coming. Densely populated cities, lack of space, increased insecurity, surveillance, and the growing dangers of the Internet are all problems that the Chinese handle naturally because they are confronted by them on a daily basis. The days of opportunism are also gone and the key artists are confident in the long-term approach. The kaleidoscope of pictures gives the reader a condensed overview of the most recent tendencies in Chinese contemporary art. Like his eminent colleague Zeng Fanzhi, He Wenjue moved from beautiful Hunan to Beijing where he became fascinated by the movie industry. He then carefully selected some iconic images from popular films to make his “Watch Movie” series. This was followed by a new period called the “Daily Images” where the focus lay in the act of translating reality into an image that represents daily activities, travels, moods, and emotions. Museum shows a solitary lady resting on a bench in a museum. The typical blurry technique used by He adds abstract emotions evocative of Luc Tuymans’ paintings. Shanghai-based installation, performance, and video artist Xu Zhen is a master of ironically subverting political exploitation and artistic conventions. He likes to juxtapose elements from different cultures; his stone sculpture Eternity is a technical tour de force that manages to realize a balanced structure of two massive stone sculptures. Xu makes us travel in time and reflect on physical and spiritual issues that are still very relevant today. ISSUE 1 . 2017

Arx Lee, Aviator II, Oil on canvas, 2011, 160 x 200 cm

114

One of the youngest and most promising artists in our overview, Sun Xun lives in Hangzhou. The artist produces a multitude of drawings with incorporated text and then films them sequentially to create animations. Fascinated by world history, politics, technology, and natural organisms, his references span thousands of years and range from Song Dynasty calligraphy to something reminiscent of his favorite artist, Albrecht Dürer. (There is also a distinct overlap with William Kentridge, the South African artist who also uses hand-drawn animation to tell the violent story of his country.) The featured pastel-on-canvas painting 21K-50 testifies to Sun’s fertile imagination by showing a spaceship of the future. Spaceships are also a fixture of Arx Lee’s work, and his “Buda Pest” series is named according to the surnames of two fictional lovers who live in a desolate world after the end of the human race. The heroes move in space via spaceships that appear to be made of advanced and old technology. The Aviator depicts Buda discovering a spaceship in the form of a beetle, which allows him to escape from a dreadful place to be reunited with his beloved Pest. Like Sun, Arx is fascinated by animation and it is his avowed ambition to turn “Buda Pest” into an animation film. And although Zhao Yao is active in various media, his forte is clearly conceptual painting. His recent series “A Painting of Thought” reveals a sense of mission that deals with fundamental questions with art. He likes to use found materials (like used fabric) on which he displays his brand of conceptual abstract art. The viewer has the feeling to be confronted with brain games, dissection puzzles like the centuries-old Tangram. With each new series, Zhao finds new models that redefine the balance between art and artist, art and the viewer. JETSETMAG.COM

Liu Wei, Purple Air, Oil on canvas, 2008, 300 x 540 cm

Beijing-based artist Liu Wei has mastered a wide range of media and techniques including photography, painting, sculpture and installation. Found objects are an inherent part of his art and he reworks and transforms them into sculptures and installations. He is well known for his “Purple Air” painting series in which he shows us the city as a dynamic and vital force, where nature still has a role to play. The reproduced paintings reveal abstracted patterns of upward reaching vertical lines that represent the buildings of the future. Liu also uses computer software to produce a multitude of images from which he selects the best for his final works. Yang Zhenzhong has constructed a multi-faceted oeuvre that consists mainly of photography and videos. Early in his career he metaphorically represented the nuclear Chinese family by photographing several combinations of a rooster, a hen, and their chickens to articulate his interest for family policy and social planning. He focuses on the intrinsic disharmony and the

discrepancies observed in Chinese society. Passage is a recent video that pertains to time, space, and the contrast between the long and the flat spaces of the screen. It is an aesthetic metaphor of life and death, an ultimate achievement by one of the few Chinese video artists who can truly rival the great Yang Fudong. Alongside her husband, Song Dong, Yin Xiuzhen forms the preeminent power couple in contemporary Chinese art. She is famous for her portable cities — suitcases filled with discarded fabric and equipped with speakers that give each “city” its own soundtrack. Her main issues concern the construction of history and memory. The installation “One Sentence” consists of 108 objects, numbered stainless steel tins filled with clothes from various friends and arranged in a circular configuration. The title refers to the words of a sentence that form a unit like the tins, which are numbered and stamped on the lid. Inside the tins the clothes produce a beautiful abstract portrait of colors and patterns.

Xie Molin, Overlay no 10, Acrylic on canvas, 103 x 103 cm, 2012

118

The pioneer of Chinese abstract and conceptual art is clearly Wang Guangle, whose beautiful terrazzo paintings are reminiscences of the tiled floors in his childhood home. The elements of time, memory, and evolution all play a crucial role in his works. The younger abstract painters we have selected have other concerns but they are equally concept-based. Xie Molin is an arist who builds drawing machines that create complex, organized abstract paintings to expand the potentialities of the medium. Some of his paintings, like Overlay No. 10, show horizontal bands of radiant colors, while others feature a vertical or rainbow configuration. His recent paintings are monochrome with an irradiating light in the center. Xie is not throwing the dice like John Cage, but he keeps a balance between chance and concept as can be clearly understood by the differences in his various series. The amazing diversity displayed by these artists is the living proof of their innovative skills, conceptual and moral strengths, and JETSETMAG.COM

infinite potentialities. The inexorable rise of Chinese contemporary art will undoubtedly strongly challenge the present supremacy of Western art in the years to come. Serious Western collectors would be wise to pay attention to this burgeoning movement.

magine the calming sounds of water lapping along the lakeshore, the gentle whistle of an evening breeze, the woodsy fragrance of the forest, the orange-colored sunset perched along the horizon. This is an everyday reality at 550 Red Barn Lane. Virginia’s jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Smith Mountain Lake is a majestic escape with an impressive, 40-mile-long expanse of over 22,600 acres of crystal-clear water. The locale was most notably featured as the backdrop to the 1991 comedy What About Bob? starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss, and in person, it will simply take your breath away. hether it’s in Vegas or Orlando (where it added an estimated $53 million to the city’s economy over its three days this year), NBAA is when the biggest names in private aviation come together to break major news and show off their latest and greatest creations. This year, about 1,100 exhibitors were divided between 25 acres at the Orlando Executive Airport and the Orange County Convention Center where industry insiders, private jet owners and buyers, and Jetset editors like myself wandered the halls together in search of the next great thing in private aviation. The following are a few such highlights. It wouldn’t be NBAA without a major announcement from Cessna. One of the foremost industry leaders, they love using the platform to unveil something spectacular, and this year they finally JETSETMAG.COM

Elsewhere, Honda Aircraft company made waves with the United States National Aeronautic Association on hand to formally present the HondaJet with speed records over two recognized courses — from New Jersey to Fort Lauderdale, and Boston to Palm Beach. The HondaJet is the first aircraft in its class to officially achieve the Boston to Palm Beach record. The aircraft achieved a maximum ground speed of 422 knots (486 mph). Factoring average headwinds of 30 knots (35 mph), the flight took two hours and 58 minutes. “We chose several of the busiest business aviation airports with extremely popular routes to demonstrate that the HondaJet will get customers where they need to be faster than any other light jet,” said Honda Aircraft President and CEO Michimasa Fujino. A perennial favorite of those shopping for a small private jet, the HondaJet is still the fastest in its class (with a maximum cruise speed of 422 knots), the quietest in its class, soars the highest in its

revealed the details of their long-awaited Citation Hemisphere. We learned that the aircraft will be powered by two Safran Silvercrest engines, giving it over 12,000 pounds of thrust, and an expected range of 4,500 nautical miles and a cabin altitude of 5,000 feet. With a 102-inch cabin, flat floor, and 74-inch stand-up clearance, it will be able to seat up to 19 passengers. The Hemisphere also features plenty of other touches private jet owners will appreciate. Its 20 oversized windows and skylights are specifically engineered to provide natural light, while the seats will come equipped with “thermo-electric technology to optimize heating and cooling comfort for passengers.” If that weren’t enough, the baggage area will be fully accessible while airborne. The Hemisphere is expected to ship in 2019.

class (with a maximum altitude of 43,000 feet), and the most fuelefficient light jet in its class by up to 17 percent. The sold-out static display at Orlando Executive Airport (ORL) featured 114 aircraft. Bombardier’s static display is always a sight to behold, and this year they had 10 jets lined up outside a massive hospitality area that included a lounge, private meeting spaces, and a waterfall. Other highlights include a stirring opening day tribute to late golf legend and aviation enthusiast Arnold Palmer by NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen, and an annual charity benefit which raised more than $450,000 for Corporate Angel Network’s efforts to provide cancer patients with free air travel to specialized treatment. For aviation enthusiasts, NBAA is always a special time of year. 2016 did not disappoint. ISSUE 4 . 2016
