A GUIDE TO EVERYTHING THAT SHOULD BE ON YOUR RADAR RIGHT NOW

TRENDING AUTOMOBILE:

2020 Tesla Roadster

The most revolutionary American automaker in generations began its foray into the market in 2008 with one bold piece of machinery: the Roadster. Now with ten years of innovation under its belt, Tesla is reinvigorating the model that started it all and the specs are staggering. With a reported zero to 60 time of under two seconds, the new Roadster is the fastest street legal car available for purchase. It also has a top speed of over 250 mph and a price tag of $200,000, so basically you get Bugatti-beating performance at about one-tenth the price. Oh, and did we mention the all-electric juggernaut can travel 620 miles on a single charge? Pre-order now.

TRENDING WATCH SAFE:

Buben & Zorweg Solitaire Vision The perfect gift for those who really value their timepieces, this is the most sophisticated and elaborate watch safe we have ever seen. The Solitaire Vision contains a host of over-the-top features like a built-in timepiece with a stainless steel bezel, LED lighting, and bulletproof spy glass to protect up to 46 of your treasures. As if this wasn’t enough, the safe integrates a cigar humidor, bar module, and Hi-Fi system, turning into an entertainment system fit for a king.

TRENDING CONCEPT:

Artur Trendak Twistair 2.0 Gyrocopter Expected to make its physical debut in the first quarter of 2018, Trendak’s bold second iteration of the Twistair is a striking, two-seater tandem gyrocopter. Designed with comfort and safety in mind, this fun transport will be available in three options: naked with the front window only, semi-opened, and a full body kit with all the cockpit covered (pictured). The open version adds to the sense of speed and adrenaline, while the fully closed model provides a more serene experience.

TRENDING WATCH:

Bell & Ross BR-X1 Skeleton Tourbillon Sapphire Full sapphire cases are one the most prominent recent trends in high-end timepieces, with premier watchmakers like Richard Mille and Hublot releasing lovely pieces incorporating the gemstone. Bell & Ross is the latest to enter into this exciting world with perhaps their most stunning masterwork yet, the BR-X1 Skeleton Tourbillon Sapphire. The sapphire used for the watch’s case is pure to 99.997%, and that purity results in transparency which allows one to fully appreciate the mechanics of the watch’s masterful movement.

And oh, what a movement it is. The hand-wound calibre BR-CAL.288 with tourbillon escapement has been completely skeletonized, with all the bridges open-worked so that you can literally see everything. The tourbillon in action is a marvelous sight to behold, and brilliant design elements only augment the experience. Despite the $500,000 price tag, the first five pieces in the collection sold out immediately last year, prompting Bell & Ross to release eight more that are sure to go quickly. ISSUE 1 . 2018

Takeoff // What’s New TRENDING TECHNOLOGY:

Oculus Go VR Headset The first name in VR technology returns with what Oculus head Hugo Barra calls “hands-down the easiest way to get into VR.” Arriving early in 2018, the Go was designed for comfort, with breathable fabrics, and features new lenses, a 2560x1440 screen, and spatial audio built in, meaning it doesn’t require headphones. But perhaps the best feature? It is entirely selfcontained and doesn’t require any PC or wires, allowing you to enjoy over 1,000 VR games, social apps, and 360° experiences anywhere life takes you.

TRENDING COLLECTION:

Montblanc 1926 Heritage Made with the adventurous jetsetter in mind, this collection of original leather pieces was meant to endure countless journeys. These bags have a rugged, vintage look, yet still offer the same level of exceptional craftsmanship that Montblanc is known for. The whole collection is made from vegetable-tanned leather treated in the Tuscan tradition — giving each piece a rich patina that only improves with age and wear — while the bright red printed interior lining offers an elegant punch of flair.

TRENDING COLLABORATION:

Triton and Aston Martin’s Project Neptune

24

After proving its nautical design skills with the AM37 powerboat it unveiled at 2016’s Monaco Yacht Show, Aston Martin is teaming up with renowned yacht-maker Triton to create yet another one-ofa-kind vessel. Aston Martin Consulting’s managing director Bradley Yorke-Biggs says “It is a clear and engaging demonstration of how Aston Martin’s expertise in sports car design and craftsmanship can be extended into new aspects of the luxury world.” JETSETMAG.COM

One look at this $4-million, three-person luxury submersible and you can tell it’s an Aston Martin, as the silver body and sleek lines clearly take their cue from the automaker’s distinctive sports cars. The sub can remain underwater for up to 12 hours, and a pilot operates it via a combination of joystick, touchscreen, and manual override controls, while an exterior array of five 20,000-lumen LED lights help guide your way.

TRENDING ACCESSORY:

Solloshi Cronus-Desktop Cigarillo Holder Solloshi is known for making bold accessories, and this is one of their biggest statement pieces yet. Milled from a single block of CNC-machined, aerospace-grade titanium, this bulletthemed cigarillo holder is sure to start any conversations in the office. Modeled after a Colt revolver, the Cronus makes removing a tiny cigar an experience. The cylinder rotates, the revolver ratchets and clicks in place, and you remove a titanium bullet and enjoy your smoke. Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name would surely approve.

TRENDING EXHIBIT:

“Rodin: 100 Years,” Cleveland Museum of Art Museums across the globe are celebrating the centennial of the death of one of history’s foremost sculptors with traveling exhibitions, permanent installations, and educational activities. The most prominent in the US is this special display at the Cleveland Museum of Art of over 40 works from the museum’s permanent collection. Perhaps most iconic is one of the museum’s signature works, the monumental Thinker — which was severely damaged by a bomb in 1970 — and the massive plaster sculpture Heroic Head of Pierre de Wissant.

TRENDING RESTAURANT:

LAVO Singapore

TAO Group has been on fire lately. They launched the third location of their successful LAVO concept with a bang on December 31st by throwing an epic New Year’s party featuring Jamie Foxx and host of celebrities. If you’ve never visited either the Vegas or New York locations, LAVO is an Italian American bistro with an upbeat atmosphere (they call it “vibe dining”) and a nightlife component that includes live DJ sets. Perched 57 stories atop the architectural marvel that is the Marina Bay Sands hotel — and offering a fantastic traditional Italian menu, a luxurious lounge, and sprawling outdoor terrace overlooking the skyline — LAVO Singapore is genuinely one-of-a-kind.

The Jetset Wine Review: shafer vineyards By tami austin

2013 Shafer Vineyards “Hillside Select” 100% Estate Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley Release Date: September 1, 2017 Vineyard Location: Made entirely from Shafer’s Hillside Estate Vineyards in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley Brix at Harvest: 24° – 26° Cooperage: 32 months in all-new, 60-gallon Allier and Tronçais French oak barrels

2013 Growing Season: Daytime heat and evening coolness were consistent, creating warm, sun-soaked days and perfect, chilly nights resulting in an ideal growing season. As a result, the fruit was harvested at tremendous ripeness and was bursting with vibrant color and flavor.

Our Taste: Shafer’s 2013 Hillside Select is a 100 percent estate Cabernet Sauvignon engulfed in a symphony of complex, explosive depth, with a blue-black and ascending dark purplish-red color. It’s a young, but full-bodied wine with remarkable concentration, distinct aromatic perfection, legs of steel, and modest meniscus. It offers a rich bouquet of continuous dark fruit, cocoa, dark chocolate, tobacco, black tea laced in stone minerality, and has a lasting tannic structure of pure silk. A divine work of art in winemaking.

28

JETSETMAG.COM

2015 Shafer Vineyards “TD-9” Proprietary Red Blend (56% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Malbec) - Napa Valley Release Date: September 1, 2017 Vineyard Locations: Stags Leap District, Yountville, and a vineyard in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains just south of the Stags Leap District. Brix at Harvest: 23.5° – 25.5° Cooperage: 20 months in all-new, 60-gallon Allier and Tronçais French oak barrels

2015 Growing Season: Spring through early autumn was filled with warm, sunny vintages, and this was no exception. Because of the reliably consistent levels of daytime warmth and cool temperatures in the evening, this was another ideal growing season which resulted in fruit bearing abundant color and concentration and aromatics that were both full and enticing.

Our Taste: Shafer’s new proprietary red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec is an adventurous, yet bold new creation. With deep purple color and concentration, this vintage reveals intense primary aromas of ripe black and red fruit, and a flavor profile with subtle hints of lavender, cocoa, licorice, and dried herbal notes which dance together on the palate in a lively fashion. TD-9 also offers savory, earthy minerality with a lengthy finish.

The Best Yachts and Yacht Concepts By ty fahlman

36

JETSETMAG.COM

W

e’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. There is simply no greater status symbol purchase than a massive vessel perfect for you and a few dozen friends to explore the most beautiful and exotic parts of the globe. So for those in this elite club (or those ready and eager to join), we have prepared a prime selection of the most exceptional yachts for sale and yacht concepts for 2018. Fresh from the big boat shows (Fort Lauderdale, Monaco), here are our most illustrious finds.

Sinot: Nature

Pushing the Boundaries of Contemporary Yacht Design Unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in September, the 120-meter (394-foot) Nature is one of the most striking boat concepts we have ever seen. As the name might imply, the design works to seamlessly blend natural elements like abundant wood and an onboard garden with modern, geometrical design touches. Everything about Nature is designed to feel organic and harmonious with the environment, and the result is something that feels like the perfect synthesis of nature and design. If built, it has the potential to be one of the greatest superyachts on earth.

“The name of the yacht has duality in purpose,” says superyacht designer and Sinot founder, Sander Sinot. The entire vessel is designed to use as much natural light as possible, and at the bow of the ship, you’ll find an upper deck observatory with floor-to-ceiling windows that give an almost “infinity pool” effect, blurring the lines between where the vessel meets the water. Nature features eight luxurious state and VIP suites, a complete spa deck, massive sealevel swimming pool, and observatory. The aforementioned garden is climate controlled, while the master suite is connected by a circular staircase to a private, 9,688-square-foot, panoramic deck.

Italian designer Cristiano Gatto personalized the interiors of this all-aluminum beauty to have an extremely modern and stylish feel. This is reflected in the linear styling, glass-sided veranda, use of matte finishes, and freestanding Paola Lenti furniture. Home accommodates up to 12 guests in six staterooms and implements two main engines and a diesel-electric propulsion system.

Dynamiq: GTT 115

Forward-Thinking Design by Studio Porsche When Porsche designs a yacht, you know it’s going to be special. Upon its debut in Monaco, Dynamiq CEO Sergei Dobroserdov hailed the 35-meter GTT 115 as “the culmination of a long process of design and development to introduce a new kind of superyacht to the market.” The GTT 115 certainly looks like no yacht we’ve ever seen. With its sleek design, lavish interior, and all-aluminum frame, it apparently takes its styling cues from the iconic sports car brand.

Lürssen: TV

Sophisticated Design and Engineering Although technically not “new” — it was built in ‘08 and was a finalist at the ‘09 World Superyacht Awards — the 78.4-meter TV is currently on the market and was the biggest yacht on display at the FLIBS. We’ve always been in love with this behemoth, as its Alberto Pinto interior is stunning, its design is borderline brilliant, and it has ample room for 16 guests in nine staterooms plus 25 crew members. TV was practically made to throw epic celebrations.

Ferretti Group: Custom Line 120

High Standards in Contemporary Concepts The latest superyacht from the Italian yard makes landfall in the form of the Custom Line 120, a 38.36-meter bespoke vessel developed with the help of renowned designer Francesco Paszkowski. A reimagining of life at sea, the Custom Line 120 caters to any individual yacht owner’s desires while applying many of today’s modern architectural elements to complete its sleek appearance and innovative hull structure. Stunning design with ample room for hosting makes the Custom Line 120 one yacht you’ll definitely want docked at your slip.

Arcadia Sherpa: Panta Rei III Haute Couture Inside and Out

The 60-foot Sherpa is one of the most elegant and efficient small yachts around. Already renowned for its intelligent and beautiful space-saving design, Arcadia’s smallest yacht recently received a one-of-a-kind makeover. At the behest of its owner, the Arcadia spent over two months meticulously recreating the aesthetics of a “silver sand” Rolls-Royce to make the Panta Rei III, unlike anything we’ve seen before, with hull paint laboriously engineered to both precisely match that from Rolls and withstand nautical travel.

Baglietto: 43M FAST An Iconic Model Restyled

42

Baglietto recently restyled their iconic 43-meter yacht, and the results are spectacular. With sleek, streamlined lines, oversized windows, two terraces, and a beach club, it offers both style and functionality in a compact package. She sleeps 12 guests – all below deck — in five cabins including a spacious master suite. Interiors are both lavish and contemporary with beige and brown tones and stylish modern furnishings. The FAST also lives up to her name, with a very formidable cruising speed of 28 knots. JETSETMAG.COM

The New Year’s Finest New Aircraft By ty fahlman

44

JETSETMAG.COM

A

new year brings a whole new crop of private aircraft for sale. After visiting NBAA in Vegas and chatting with some of the premier manufacturers in the world, we have compiled this list of every new plane that should be on a buyer’s radar in 2018. From stunning new jumbo jets from the biggest names in the business to several innovative and efficient smaller planes hitting production, this selection offers a little something for everyone. Whether you need a new company plane to ferry your entire executive team or just a light jet for quick family trips, this list is guaranteed to get your engine revving.

Bombardier: Global 7000

The Industry’s Largest Purpose-Built Business Jet With its combination of smooth ride, spacious interior, and all-around efficiency, the Global 6000 has been our favorite large aircraft for some time now. With the release of the 7000, Bombardier is only improving on a good thing. The company is calling it “largest purpose-built business jet in the industry,” and after seeing it up close at Henderson Executive Airport at NBAA this past October, it’s hard to argue with the statement. At over 111 feet long and 27 feet tall, the new $70-million Global casts a mighty shadow on the tarmac. Inside, it offers room for up to 19 comfortable passengers, a lavish interior, and a master suite with a bed for getting peaceful rest on cross-ocean flights. A range of 7,400 nm and a host of technological advancements including an air management system that provides 100 percent fresh air round out its impressive list of features.

Embraer: Phenom 300E

Designated “E” for “Enhanced” The most popular private jet in the world just got even better, as the Phenom 300 was given a comprehensive high-tech facelift. Interior designer Jay Beever worked to provide passengers with more cabin room and greater luxury, incorporating fuller isles and design cues from luxury cars, as evidenced in the very Rolls-Royce-esque instrument gages and Tesla-worthy tech panel. The $10-million 300E also offers a range of over 2,200 nm, meaning it can make almost any trip within the US without refueling.

XTI Aircraft: VTOL TriFan 600

Extended Technology and Innovation The world’s first-ever hybrid electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, the $6.5-million TriFan 600 has the potential to be genuinely revolutionary. On display at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November, the company is already reporting over 60 pre-orders of this game-changing craft. It has the ability to takeoff from nearly anywhere on either land or sea, and a top speed of 345 mph and a range of up to 1,200 nm.

HondaJet: HA-420

A High-Performance Sports Car in the Sky Because of its size, styling, and affordability, HondaJet has quickly become a favorite of those looking for an economical small plane. In fact, it’s hard to think of another aircraft in the $5 million range we’d recommend over the new HA-420. The updated interior is surprisingly comfortable, and the technological innovations and use of carbon fiber make it a light-but-speedy companion with a cruising speed of 368 knots and a range of 1,206 nm.

Gulfstream: G600

A Combination of Form, Function and Efficiency

48

Gulfstream’s G series is the global gold standard in large aircraft, and the G600 is their premier plane. The fastest in its class, the $55-million G600 carries passengers 6,200 nautical miles at Mach 0.85. Designed to carry up to 19 passengers and sleep nine, it offers ample room to work and rest with both single seats and divans that convert into beds. Elsewhere, a new media system allows up to 19 personal devices to stream while in flight. JETSETMAG.COM

ACI JET HELPS FIGHT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRES BY MATTHEW VON DAVEN

a

n eerie glow discolors the horizon; choking smoke fills the sky. In the distance, a wildfire rages, threatening to envelop a community of homes. Cresting a ridgeline, pilots with nerves of steel swoop low in a series of coordinated air attacks, dropping a viscous red liquid to contain (and hopefully extinguish) the inferno. An aerial symphony plays out overhead. The worst fire season in years is marked with grim statistics. In 2017, fires burned over an estimated one million acres of fertile California land – more than twice as many through the same time period in 2016. The conductors of that aerial firefighting symphony, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (or simply CAL FIRE as it is often known), relies on an orchestral team — each of whom must play their part to perfection. And one of those critical supporting organizations keeping tempo is our friends, ACI Jet. Few in the business aviation community are aware that ACI Jet is in the life-saving business, providing ground support to the CAL FIRE Air Attack Base in Paso Robles. An “Air Attack Base” is much like it sounds. The symphony builds. The slap of rotor blades from firefighting helicopters gives way to the roaring jet engines of lumbering air tankers as they take to the sky. Moments earlier, an OV-10 Bronco, a nimble lead aircraft operated by CAL FIRE has departed to coordinate those air assets. Like any other battle, human and technical performance will help to overcome the enemy — in this case, raging wildfires. Twelve-hour days are the norm as ACI Jet employees quickly refuel CAL FIRE aircraft seven days a week, ensuring each aircraft minimizes ground time so it can be back up in the sky where it belongs. Tired and drained, reinforcements are often called upon from ACI Jet’s San Luis Obispo headquarters to continue supporting the firefighting effort. Whether refueling or providing a multitude of other logistical support services, the ACI Jet team does whatever it takes to keep the CAL FIRE crews in the air, and working to contain the fire. As day gives way to dusk, and with refueling now complete, an ACI Jet employee wonders aloud, “Is that pilot going to save my home?” Like far too many in California, the recent wildfires have threatened the homes and loved ones of ACI Jet employees themselves. Whether saving business travelers’ time in its Executive Terminals in Santa Ana and the Central Coast or saving lives from Paso Robles, this is personal to ACI Jet. So on behalf of everyone at Jetset, we salute and support these brave men and women in their valiant efforts. About ACI Jet ACI Jet is a leading California-based business and private aviation service company, enabling aircraft owners and operators the freedom to focus on their businesses rather than their travel accommodations. Organically grown, from a single aircraft operation to a multi-base fleet operator, and privately owned since its founding, ACI Jet is the premier provider of aircraft ground support services, maintenance and inspections, full-service aircraft management, and private jet charter services on the West Coast. More information can be found by visiting them at ACIJet.com.

With its pristine conditions, four sets of tee marker options

The Quail Lodge Golf Club also houses its own golf academy and offers a variety of learning experiences for all golfers, with the academy’s director, Katherine Marren, being acknowledged as Golf Digest’s “Best Teacher in the State.” Also located at the clubhouse is one of the resort’s main dining experiences, Edgar’s. STAY & PLAY: Carmel Valley Ranch Speaking of the wild side, we head over to our next hidden gem, Carmel Valley Ranch. This resort places its emphasis on the “idea of play.” From rounds of golf to an intense bee experience (suiting up in a beekeeper’s suit and getting up close and personal with the bees), this is a spot for play for all ages. The suites and guest rooms draw upon a California ranch style from their vantage point sitting on the ridges and rolling hills of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Guests can choose their suite location from three different neighborhoods depending on their view preference of the valley, the bluffs and golf course or the incredibly intimate courtyard gardens. The rooms themselves define the precise point where luxury meets bliss. Focusing on the idea of play, we head over to the resort’s 18hole golf course which is the only Pete Dye-designed golf course in Northern California. With a recent multi-million dollar course enhancement, the par 70 course challenges your game with its dramatic elevation changes while forcing you to avoid its natural surroundings like vineyards, lavender fields and old oak groves that guard each hole. The award-winning views mixed with the unique microclimate that provides over 300 days of sunshine promises nothing but the perfect round of golf. After playing 18 holes, you’re welcome to enjoy the gorgeous clubhouse that in 2013 underwent a million-dollar enhancement. Golfers have access to the newly-placed fire pit seating areas, updated locker rooms and huge outdoor patio seating to further take in the views and ambiance surrounding the course. TASTE: Swing Wines at Carmel Valley Ranch

Stepping back indoors, we head over to the newly remodeled Valley Kitchen, where Chef Tim Wood reiterates that the kitchen is the heart of the home (or in this case the Ranch). The freshly expanded Valley Kitchen creates a highly vibrant environment that connects its guests with the local community through the taste of food and is arguably the social hub for the entire resort. Focusing on the popular “farm to table” concept, Wood encourages his chefs to be creative and unique. The menu is broken down into three sections — “Let’s Taste” (nibbles), “Let’s Share” (commune) and “Let’s Eat” (full portions). Diners are meant to feel as if they are experiencing a home-cooked meal which they are sharing among their family. All items are sourced from the valley region and the dining experience is inspired by the area’s natural surroundings. Carmelvalleyranch.com/dining/valley-kitchen

To further help guests experience the local Monterey culture, the Ranch has even created its very own wine label. Swing Wines launched in fall of 2015 and is curated from its Carmel Valley Ranch Pinot Noir Vineyard that spans four acres across the actual ranch. Winemaker Peter Figge, who sadly passed away this year, held a zest and passion for life that he poured into his wines. Among the wines curated, some of the most notable were the 2015 Swing “Reserve” Pinot Noir Carmel Valley, a rich bodied Pinot with flavors drawing from dark cherries, plums and earthy threads. The 2015 Swing Pinot Noir is a vibrant, bright bodied wine known for its long finish from bing cherries, blackberries and earthy nuances. And last but not least, the 2016 Swing “Reserve” Rose is crisp, clean, and full of summery acidity created from hints of strawberries, melon and white cherries.

t’s been called “the most exclusive home in Las Cabos.” A near perfect vacation villa that rivals or exceeds any other private vacation destination anywhere in the world. Casa Fryzer is an incredible palace set high above a bluff in the exclusive, gated, private community of Palmilla, looking out and over a majestic and tranquil vista that takes your breath away whether it’s the first time you gaze out over it or the one hundredth. It seems every single detail, no matter how significant or minute, has been meticulously planned for and delivered. The house stretches along 300 feet of hillside, which means you have a never-ending panoramic view of the crystal blue waters of the Sea of Cortez, as well as sweeping views of the city of San Jose in front of you throughout your stay. The home makes you literally feel as though you are on top of the world, and the relaxing environment this home naturally conveys couples with over-the-top service from JETSETMAG.COM

The list of amenities is extensive, and all of them feel naturally situated in Casa Fryzer and seamlessly blended into the design of the home. There is a fully-stocked, high-performance fitness facility overlooking the Sea of Cortez that allows you to get your workout in at any time you want. The private home gym has a pilates reformer, yoga gear, TRX, weights, cardio equipment, and of course, a worldclass resident fitness director named Modu Seye who’s trained the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Eli Manning. The five-person, full-time professional staff also includes the resident chef who trained with Enrique Che Olvera at Michelin-starred Puyol in Mexico City, one of the top 50 restaurants in the world. The design of the home is remarkably efficient and exquisite; it offers 8,000 square feet of interior space that couples with a staggering 13,000 square feet of outdoor space, and every square inch of the property is livable and meant for guests to enjoy and explore. Comfort and opulence abound at every turn, and despite its size, the home evokes a feeling of intimacy. The layout is ideal, with six bedrooms and two master suites. In the more massive master, there is a steam shower, fireplace, and massage table, and the dual-master wings are situated about 300 feet apart from each other on opposite corners of the home, which offers optimal privacy for guests.

The kitchen is restaurantgrade, and the bar located inside the vast family room that looks out through a wall that opens completely allowing fresh air to circulate through the home is stocked with all the familiar liquors and beers. The professional-grade pool table sits just in front of the glass doors that open to invite the ocean breeze. There’s also a 2,000-square-foot infinity pool with a swimup bar, and because the house is situated at the highest point of the private community, it is the most private home in the ultra-upscale development, and the breathtaking views are never-ending. ith its immaculate hand brushed-sand and mangrovefringed flats, Turneffe Island Resort casts a spell at first sight. Located at a secluded, 14-acre private island on the southern tip of Turneffe Atoll 30 miles off the coast of Belize, the resort is blessed by the teeming marine life of Caye Bokel. This atoll is so pristine it all appears photoshopped by an overzealous designer at Italian Vogue. Framed by cognac colored sandbars studded with windswept brush, the vodka-clear water teems with tarpon. Gentle surf laps up to palm-thatched villas straight out of Robinson Crusoe.

62

JETSETMAG.COM

From descending to Jacques Cousteau-like depths to cave diving 130 feet into the infamous Great Blue Hole for surreal stalactites and shark sightings, there is much to explore at Turneffe Island. I recommend a five to seven-night stay in order to take full advantage of all of Turneffe’s proprietary perks, like high-octane sport fishing. Boasting six expansive saltwater flats, the lodge attracts avid anglers from around the globe. Here you can attain the prestigious Caribbean Grand Slam – reeling in a bonefish, tarpon, and permit, possibly all in one day. For those that prefer spin fishing, there are miles of lagoons for lively trolling and deep sea fishing.

Arriving by helicopter is the only way to go for those wanting to maximize their time and sense of arrival. Astrum Helicopters is the finest local fleet for business class travelers. Astrum operates the Bell 206 helicopter; the spacious cabin offers a seating configuration ideal for executive transport. Best of all, you feel like royalty landing on the white sand beach of this wee remote island, right next to the Presidential Villa. Speaking of which, the grandest accommodation here is a nod to laissez-faire, laid-back luxury. In other words, it doesn’t try too hard. An homage to seaside romance, the Presidential Villa is a kiss

of bliss on the sand with two bedrooms with alfresco showers, a sprawling terrace featuring a private plunge pool, a chic living room for lounging in between excursions. It makes the perfect lodging for a week of luxury and adrenaline-fueled fishing. While the area is renowned for bonefish, tarpon, and permit, you can chase the grand slam or spend your day reeling in snapper, barracuda, and jack. Be sure to pack fly fishing-specific sunglasses, as they are an absolute must. You’ll use them every single moment on the flats, abandoning them only when you target tarpon by moonlight. Despite the allure of barracuda, my eyes remain fixed on bonefishing. The bonefish’s mirror-like scales mimic their environment in an impressive, albeit infuriating, natural camouflage. Imagine dense mangroves framing miles of scalloped sand submerged under knee-

deep tide: this is ground zero for bonefish. Careful not to trip or drop your rod; this will scatter the school in a skittish flash panic. I hooked one on day two, and it took off full throttle, like a Ducati at the Dakar Rally. My heart lurched with it, talk about an adrenaline spike. While there are endless activities on offer, there’s also the liberty and beauty of doing something so relaxing the only threat to maximum relaxation is a possible coconut concussion. Do check into the resort’s Serenity Spa to relieve all the tension built up in your casting arm; the therapists here are accustomed to working one on one with guests towards specific healing goals. Sunburned guests rave about the spa’s locally-sourced seaweed wrap. Cleverly scaled for an island this intimate, Serenity is the proverbial cherry on top of a grand stay. HOW CAMBRIA CEO MARTY DAVIS HELPED EXPAND HIS FAMILY EMPIRE BY TOM ZENNER

70

JETSETMAG.COM

S

ome people reach the pinnacle of success by sheer will. Others may achieve it with an abundance of talent, or work ethic, or fortuitous timing and good fortune. There’s also a rare type of CEO that can do it by possessing a combination of all those attributes, and one such individual is the head of a thriving family business in Minnesota.

If you don’t know the name Marty Davis, chances are you have either seen, are aware of, or even routinely enjoy some of the products and services his family’s company has provided for the past eight-plus decades or so. The dynamic and charismatic CEO is the driving force behind a billion-dollar global family empire which began as a dairy business in the 1930s and expanded into an entire portfolio of companies — respected, popular, and profitable enough to propel the family into the rarified air of the billionaire club of American families. “I love that I grew up in our family business,” Davis tells Jetset. “And really, our family DNA and our love of business were all born from that early creamery company.” Davis, his brother Mitch, and father Mark prove their acumen and love for business time and again with their leadership in their disparate industries. The Davis Family’s agribusiness operation is one of the largest producers of cheese in the United States. They also owned Sun Country Airlines for six years, turning the company into a profitable venture before agreeing to sell it to an investment firm in December of last year. But perhaps their most famous creation is Cambria.

If you are unfamiliar, Cambria produces high-end natural stone countertops for homes all over the world and has several luxe showrooms across the US. Their countertops are regarded as some of the finest money can buy, and make an artful addition to any kitchen. Davis launched the brand back in the early 2000s when he was searching for a new challenge and looking to carve his own niche within the family portfolio. ISSUE 1 . 2018

Altitude // CEO Profile “Today, certainly my baby is Cambria,” Davis says, “and it’s because I was fortunate to have founded it, and essentially do what my dad had done with the cheese business...his company was a very important part of his life; I really understand that.” Visiting with him, it is easy to understand how he has attained his level of success. His enthusiasm is infectious, his warmth, and sincerity combine to make him a force of nature that motivates, inspires and leads people around him in business, philanthropy or whatever endeavor he’s involved in. Success stories like Davis’ are beneficial for anyone aspiring to be the very best at what they do because they show that the journey to the top isn’t paved in gold. Or devoid of potholes. The secret to Davis’ success isn’t a mystery. “I like the term ‘fail forward fast,’” he tells us. “The key is if you’re not right, get right so that it can be a positive adventure and not your demise.” To Davis, it’s all about perseverance, an incredible belief in what you are doing, work ethic, delivering a phenomenal product people want or need, having excellent employees, and the calculated guts to take risks when it is necessary. “I gained a lot of confidence in taking risks by watching

my father build his company, and the company got into trouble multiple times because of risk-taking,” Davis says. As a world-class salesman, a closer, a visionary, and a pseudocelebrity in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul because of his philanthropic endeavors, Davis certainly has an illustrious contact list. In the early days of Cambria, around 2001, one particular celebrity helped keep Davis’ new business afloat, as high production costs meant Cambria was losing over half a million dollars each month. Drastic times called for extreme measures, and Davis made the bold move of approaching radio newsreader and pitchman Paul Harvey about doing live commercial reads for the company. The risk paid off, and to this day, a vital component of the Cambria marketing campaign involves celebrity endorsements. Davis has built a thriving company with Cambria, and while he takes his roles in all of the family businesses very seriously, another secret to his success is how seriously he takes enjoying life. “I have an urge to be active,” he says. “I’m very curious, optimistic, and stay active in a lot of different ventures.” Davis believes he possesses a

natural instinct to keep moving. (“It’s a thrill, and I love it as much as I love to hunt and play baseball, travel and other things,” he says.) Davis travels a great deal, and although he does have a company plane, he makes sure it is strategically used primarily by his sales team, as they commute to their factories or showrooms in Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, and California. A long time ago a friend in the cheese business told Davis to get a jet but stressed that it was most important to get one plane for his employees. “He said ‘get them out early Monday morning, let them stay all week and get home Friday so they can spend the entire weekend with their families,’” Davis says. And that’s when he decided to purchase a jet. “I can pretty much get around commercially, but I use the private plane when it makes sense,” he adds. When you watch the Super Bowl this year (which takes place in Davis’ backyard of Minneapolis), take a good look at the beautiful stadium in which the two teams will be playing. U.S. Bank Stadium is widely regarded as the crown jewel of playing facilities in the NFL, a

billion dollar-plus glass and steel work of art (with Cambria product installed throughout the stadium from the highest luxury suites down to and through the players’ locker room) that took a collaborative effort to build. Minnesota Vikings ownership and league officials needed the assistance of their most connected, dynamic supporters to assist in getting the stadium off the ground, and Marty was more than willing to lend a hand in any way he could. But that’s what he does. He envisions things and uses his energy and talents to help build them...whether it’s a company, a community masterpiece, or (now) a legacy.

he was born in California, but spent most of her childhood in Mexico. She did volunteer work in Kenya and Brazil, and spent extensive time in Ireland and other parts of Europe. In short, Kiara Beltran is a true student of the world. The award-winning actress, model, and 2017 Miss Jetset runner-up has already lived and experienced a lot in her 22 years, but after a quick chat, it is easy to see that she is still hungry for more. “I want to make a difference,” she tells Jetset, “I want to make my mark in the world.”

74

JETSETMAG.COM

“I always loved the idea of acting, but my primary love has always been helping children.” - Kiara Beltran, 2017 Miss Jetset runner-up

Beltran has already taken some sizable steps in that direction. A glance at her IMDB page reveals 18 acting credits and another 15 miscellaneous production credits. She has already tackled a wide array of characters and been featured in projects of varying size and scope. Short films, car commercials, music videos...Beltran is thoroughly committed to obtaining as much experience as she possibly can. She currently lives in Burbank, right across from the Warner Bros. lot, and looks at it every day she says. “It serves as a constant reminder to never give up on my dreams.” But acting wasn’t always the dream for Beltran. And she has a clown to thank for the shift of direction. Seriously. “I always loved the idea of acting,” she says, “but my primary love has always been helping children, so the plan was to be a doctor, working in the field of pediatric cancer.” But then one day she met a clown who visited children’s hospitals cheering up kids with terminal illnesses. “It showed me that I didn’t have to choose between my two loves,” she says. “I could still help children while pursuing my dream of being a performer.” Beltran pinpoints that moment when she began to realize the importance of seeing different perspectives, understanding that there is more than one way to look at a situation. “I started traveling, and I realized that there are a lot of ways to live your life,” she says. “Different religions, ideas, cultures...it made me grow to realize people are different than me.” And as she continued to gain experience as an actor and model she never wavered in her commitment to helping children, focusing specifically on assisting the abandoned and those with cancer.

Then the Miss Jetset competition came along. For Beltran, it felt like the perfect opportunity. “Here was a chance to not only help raise money for an incredible organization that helps children with cancer (The B+ Foundation), but to model as well,” she says. “How could I say no?” She describes the experience of competing as “amazing,” and says that even though she finished in Second Place, just shy of the title, she’s “very appreciative” for both the chance to represent the Jetset brand and the money she’d helped raise. “It was humbling, truly humbling,” she says. Moving forward, eventually Beltran sees herself owning production company, having a charity of her own that helps children with cancer, and amassing a whole lot more acting credits. She recently graduated from the New York Film Academy (NYFA), and has started to use her Spanish speaking to her advantage as an actress. “In the beginning I only acted in English, but then I realized I had a whole other world of work I was missing out on.” The shift paid off, as she was recently cast in Telemundo telenovela. “All I can do is continue working hard and focusing on my dreams,” she says. It’s precisely that attitude that certainly makes Kiara Beltran one to watch.” ISSUE 1 . 2018

Jared Chandler, Chandler Hotel Group by ty fahlman

f

or almost 20 years, Jared Chandler has been the driving force behind one of the preeminent names in the hotel real estate business. His eponymous boutique firm has built relationships throughout the industry with CEOs, architects, construction companies, public and private owners, operators, and more. Now a staple in the hotel world, Chandler Hotel Group sells across 11 states, and has expanded into an advanced firm with ties across the globe providing fullservice investment brokerage and advisory expertise as well as comprehensive management services. Why hotels? According to Chandler, there is no more exciting or profitable venture in commercial real estate...but also none more complex. Because of that, Chandler operates in an incredibly rare niche. “Very few firms, regardless of their size, have teams that specialize in hotels,” he tells me. “Most people, including most people in real estate, don’t even realize that you can actually own major hotels,” Chandler says. They assume that the major chains — your Hiltons, your Hyatts — own all their own hotels. “But they are most certainly for sale...and the returns are tremendous.” The only catch is you have to know someone who fully comprehends this very esoteric industry. This is where Chandler’s multifaceted knowledge comes into play. He calls a hotel the most management-intensive asset one can own. “Selling an apartment complex, or office building, or retail center, it’s very easy to put together the math and do an evaluation,” he says. “But a hotel is a living breathing animal: it’s a business first, a piece of real estate second.” Therefore, Chandler’s team has to understand every facet of this animal, from what a brand’s current identity is, to a hotel’s functionality, ownership, and beyond. It’s daunting work, but CHG’s ability to do so has led to considerable returns. On that note, after a particularly successful 2017, Chandler finds himself refocusing a little. Genuinely self-made and from humble Texas means, he admits that for years he was married to his work. But his current number-one priority is spending more quality time with his impressively smart ten-year-old son Brockton. He also has plans for launching a non-profit and continuing to educate people about his complex industry. “I am a firm believer in paying it forward and spreading goodwill,” he says with a smile. “As with hotels, the returns are phenomenal.”

NEW OFFICE DESIGNS INSPIRE COLLABORATION AND CREATIVITY

BY BARRY LABOV

Apple Park

78

JETSETMAG.COM

C

ollaboration can significantly enhance creativity, but it isn’t something that always comes naturally. The environment we’re surrounded by every day can be a significant factor in how much we collaborate with colleagues. That’s why some of the most creative companies in the world — Apple, Google, and Pixar, for example — have designed their headquarters to promote teamwork, literally around every corner. The work environment has the potential to foster collaboration and creativity (just as it has for these highly innovative companies), or it can do the exact opposite.

One of the newest and most talked about headquarters to open is Apple Park. It’s been years in the making and is yet another brainchild of Steve Jobs who guided its design until the end of his life. He envisioned the 175-acre campus as a center for creativity and collaboration. The main building is in the shape of a ring and is comprised of the world’s largest panels of curved glass. The open interior is organized into pods for office work, teamwork, and socializing. And from the specially designed door handles to the custom-made, timber-veneered recycled wood office walls, the attention to detail throughout the campus is intended to inspire higher levels of quality from Apple employees. Before Apple Park, Jobs helped design Pixar’s headquarters with the same goal, to foster collaboration and creativity. He was so committed to its design that the headquarters is often referred to as “Steve’s movie.” In his biography, Jobs stated the headquarters was to be a place that “promoted encounters and unplanned collaborations.” The building was designed to draw employees out of their offices and into the common areas where chance meetings and discussions could happen. Pixar’s previous campus separated employees by discipline…animators, computer scientists, etc. Jobs ensured that would not be the case with his design, which purposely brought people together. If blockbusters like Toy Story and Finding Nemo are any indication, the idea of creating opportunities for chance encounters and collaboration is working. Offering employees perks like free meals and haircuts, Google’s headquarters, Googleplex, is another open-design headquarters. Multiple common areas, high-traffic staircases, and places to socialize encourage employees to leave their offices and interact with one another. Amazon has taken a creative approach to providing spaces that encourage employee interactions. In addition to new highrise buildings at its Seattle headquarters, a series of spheres are expected to open in 2018. The three intersecting glass and metal globes provide 65,000 square feet of space for employees to meet, chat, brainstorm, and so on, all while surrounded by plants and natural light, which have been shown to increase productivity. Unlike other mega-brands, Zappos didn’t include many customarily added perks (like fitness facilities) at its headquarters. The company’s theory is that its expertise isn’t in running a gym, so instead, they worked with a passionate local entrepreneur to build and operate a fitness facility downtown near its headquarters. Additionally, the company created “inconveniences” throughout its office to create more interactions between employees. For example, they cut off a sky bridge that connected the building to the parking garage. Even though the bridge was convenient, by closing it, the company efficiently forced employees to walk through a central

Amazon Headquarters in Seattle

plaza, encouraging chance meetings, and yes, collaboration. And finally, to foster even more interactivity, the desks and walls at Zappos are easily moveable so that spaces can be altered as teams and needs change. Automotive manufacturers are jumping in on the trend, with companies like Toyota and Volvo designing campuses that encourage interaction among employees. Those working at Volvo Car’s North American headquarters don’t even have assigned workspaces. Instead, employees have lockers for their personal belongings and can choose from workspaces throughout the building where they can set up their laptops and work each day. That includes the company’s CEO Lex Kerssemakers who, just like other employees, does not have an assigned office. For those times when quiet or confidentiality is needed, there are meeting spaces and small, enclosed areas where private phone calls can be made. The open design has created cross-functionality where people from different departments are working together. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one. Collaboration allows us to better solve problems, create original ideas, vet other’s ideas, and learn from and be inspired by one another. Even with all its benefits, collaboration isn’t always easy. That’s why many corporations are creating work environments that deliberately put people together. A chance encounter or simply being in close proximity to someone you normally don’t work with can spark collaboration, and as a result, increase creativity and innovation. In short, it pays to work together. Literally.

MILLENNIALS AND REAL ESTATE INVESTING By Ken McElroy

Note: It’s not easy for a 50-year-old person to speak for millennials, so I asked Jamie Fleetwood to work on this article with me. She’s worked closely with me for two and half years, bringing a relevant, youthful perspective to an array of topics. She’s attended our company events, retreats, worked with me on KenMcElroy.com, and much more. Given the insight that Jamie has, she’s was deftly able to blend my more seasoned philosophies with a millennial voice.

w

ithin the past year, millennials have risen to the top in becoming the single largest generation of Americans. There are currently around 84 million members of this thriving demographic, outnumbering the once-dominant baby boomer generation by nearly 10 million. Naturally, being the largest age group in America, millennials have a lot of power in shaping the future real estate market, which is why it’s so critical to pay attention to their views on real estate investing and other investing opportunities.

Altitude // Estates Millennials Are Most Likely To Value Real Estate Over The Stock Market Thanks to the economic downturn of the Great Recession, most millennials graduated from college and entered the job market when it was rather difficult to find employment. Millennials have watched the stock market crash and burn, and watched as it negatively impacted their parents’ lives. Meanwhile, since the year 2000, real estate has outperformed the stock market. For instance, during that period, the S&P 500 yielded a 5.43 percent annual total return, while real estate produced a 10.71 percent return. Millennials have also watched real estate bounce back in a massive way over the years. Although in some markets it has taken nearly eight years to recover from the bubble,

The Advantages in Physical Assets and Technology According to Fannie Mae, research reports that 85 percent of millennials agree real estate is a good investment. Most are intrigued by real estate investing because you can physically see your investment. Anyone who is more visually minded or imageoriented (a good chunk of millennials) is fascinated by real estate investing because of the hands-on nature of it. Growing up in a world of technology, millennials have one significant advantage when it comes to real estate. The National Association of Realtor’s Research Department showed 99 percent of millennials use the internet to search for properties, and 58 percent found properties on a mobile device. While the substantial down payment needed to invest in real estate is the chief reason millennials aren’t currently buying, thanks to online real estate investing platforms and other creative tactics, millennials can now invest in real estate without having to save tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars first for a down payment. In essence, the more millennials continue to venture into real estate, the more ways they will find and create to invest in it. Real Estate Investing Challenges Millennials Will Face in the Future As much as millennials are anxious to get their feet wet in real estate investing, they do have some challenges standing in their way that they’ll have to overcome. According to FICO, a good chunk of millennial home buyers can’t get loans backed by Fannie Mae due to not being able to meet the median credit score of 750. Poor credit scores can be attributed to the high amounts of student debt weighed on the backs of millennials. According to Student Loan Hero, the graduating class of 2016 had an average of $37,172 in student loan debt, a six percent increase from 2015. These obstacles will make real estate investing more challenging for millennials, but not impossible.

82

others — like the millennial-favored cities of Denver and Portland — are super-hot. The heat in these markets is shining a spotlight on real estate, making it an attractive investment opportunity for millennials. What’s also making real estate stand out to millennials is the fact that American homeownership has been consistently trending downwards. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, homeownership has leveled at 63.7 percent, which is the lowest it’s been in decades. On top of that, out of 1.4 million new households that are projected to form within the next year, 1.3 million of those are expected to be renters, not buyers. This increase — combined with the fact that the majority of new household formations are made up of millennials themselves —means the rental market is in for a massive spike, which is good news for future real estate investors planning to buy and hold. JETSETMAG.COM

Although real estate investing is proving to be a more difficult journey for millennials compared to other generations, this burgeoning new generation is both determined and creative. Despite their challenges, due to this generation’s size, millennials are expected to become the majority of real estate investors. They already see real estate as the best way to invest their hard-earned dollars, and with technology firmly on their side, they now have multiple ways to invest in real estate. Once they can overcome their financial challenges from student debt and have positive returns on the horizon, the future of real estate investing will be bright, and millennials are going to play a huge role in it. Those of us from an older generation best get used to dealing with these savvy young folks when it comes to real estate transactions.

Money: Past, Present, and Future By Robert Kiyosaki 84

JETSETMAG.COM

Stone Money One interesting form of historical currency is the stone money found on the South Pacific island of Yap. As the story goes, around about 500 A.D., a person from Yap discovered limestone, 280 miles away on the island of Palau. The people of Yap already used stones as money, but since limestone was not found on Yap, limestone money became very highly prized by the Yapese. Today, although the U.S. dollar is the primary currency of the Yapese, limestone money is still prized by the people of Yap for marriage dowries, inheritance, and political favors. For hundreds of years, entrepreneurs from Yap risked their lives, sailing tiny canoes across open ocean to Palau, to acquire this precious limestone money. They paid for it with beads, coconuts, and copra (the fruit of the coconut palm). The real risk in the venture was returning to Yap with huge stones on tiny canoes. (Ironically, the value of the stone went up if an entrepreneur lost his life in acquiring the limestone money.) The stone money of Yap varied in size from just a few inches in diameter to the largest being about 12 feet in diameter and 1.5 feet thick — and weighing over 8,500 pounds. There was a hole in the middle for a pole to fit through for transport of the stone. Once the large stone was in place — generally in front of the owner’s house — the stone was rarely moved. If it was sold or transferred to a new owner, the stone tended to remain in the same place, with only the title transferred to the new owner.

H

ow often do you ask yourself: What is money? Throughout the ages, money has been different things to different people… at different times. At one time or another, shells, colored beads, feathers, stones, and cattle have all been used as currency, as mediums of exchange. Today, the modern forms of money are gold, paper, and the hot new kid on the block...Bitcoin. I have always found money — in all of its forms and functions — fascinating, and today with the invisible, could-be-gone-in-a-poof cyber ‘coin, it forces me to think about money and how it has evolved.

Paper Money To most of us, the idea of a large stone disc weighing thousands of pounds and sitting in front of our house seems ludicrous. For most of us, money is paper — cash we carry around in our wallets, deposit with a bank teller, or withdraw from an ATM. In reality, paper money is really electronic money. There is very little actual paper money in existence in 2018. Most modern money is digital, an electronic value on a computer screen — a single blip representing anything from a few pennies to billions of dollars. And one reason why banks are hesitant about savers withdrawing large amounts of cash is because they no longer keep much paper money on hand. Modern money is digital, electronic. Gold Thousands of years ago, modern paper money started as gold. The owner of the gold deposited it with a trusted person, known today as a banker. Once the gold was deposited, the “banker” would issue the gold’s owner a receipt, a paper certificate. The owner would put that piece of paper in his or her pocket and go on their merry way. Having “paper gold” — that receipt or certificate — was lighter, safer, and easier to use in doing business than carrying real gold. “Bankers” soon realized the real owners of the gold preferred using the banker’s “paper gold” more than their own “real gold.” The bankers started “lending” more “paper gold” to people who needed money. This was the start of the modern banking system, known as the fractional reserve system. In other words, there was more paper gold in circulation than there was real gold in the bank’s vaults. And who needed real gold if people are happier with “paper gold”? ISSUE 1 . 2018

Altitude // Finance Today, modern American economists such as Milton Friedman (1912-2006) considered “real gold” to be as ridiculous as Yap stone money sitting in front of your house. Many people believe that English economist John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) once said, “Gold is a barbaric relic of the past.” Keynes did not say that. What he did say was: “The gold standard is a barbaric relic of the past.” He was saying the “paper gold” standard was barbaric. He never said, “real gold” was a barbaric relic. At the time, he was critical of the “barbaric gold standard of England,” because the antiquated gold standard was choking the English economy. Keynes also said, “When the facts change, I change my mind.” Is it time we change our minds about money?

Bitcoin Bitcoin is cyber money. Bitcoin was created in 2009 and sounded like science fiction, created by an anonymous person known as Satoshi Nakamoto and who was operating outside the traditional banking system. As the story goes, one of the first Bitcoin transactions was for two Papa John’s pizzas, negotiated for the price of 10,000 Bitcoins. Today, as I write this, Bitcoins are selling for record highs, and the value of a single Bitcoin is $17,599. You can buy a lot of pizza for $176

million. Some people are predicting a single Bitcoin to be soon worth over $100,000. Others are calling for its collapse. No one really knows how the story of Bitcoin will play out, which brings us to the 176 million dollar question…

Do I Own Bitcoin? As the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, the number one personal finance book of all time, nowadays I am often asked about Bitcoin. My answer is simply: “No, not yet.” Being somewhat of a technological dinosaur, I did not hear about this cryptocurrency until 2012, and I did not buy in when it was proposed to me. Now of course, hindsight is 20/20, and like everyone, I wish I had purchased a few coins in 2009 (much like I wish I had purchased shares of Apple or Amazon around the same time). But alas, I did not. So when I am asked if I recommend buying Bitcoin, my reply is always the same: “If you are going to invest in anything — be it stocks, bonds, real estate, gold, oil, or Bitcoins — first study the subject and then find someone who is investing in the asset you are interested in and ask them questions.” A friend of mine began investing in Bitcoin early and has done very, very well. He is on the board of a hedge fund that invests in technology, so he has had a front-row seat on the Bitcoin train. And I did exactly what I suggest you do. My wife Kim and I took him to lunch and asked him many questions. At the end of our lunch, Kim

and I decided our best plan was to continue to do what we have been doing for years — invest in real gold, not paper gold like gold ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds). I have spent much of my life studying gold, silver, oil, business, and real estate. All things considered, I have done very well as an investor. I do not need any more money, nor do I want to be foolish or greedy chasing the next hot asset. But if you do feel you need more money, then studying and investing in Bitcoin or other cyber currencies might be your way to financial heaven. Nevertheless... The Reasons I Stick With Gold Are: 1. Gold is made by God. Gold is atomic number 79 on the periodic table of elements. Gold is not man-made; the dollar and Bitcoin are. 2. Gold is not an investment. Gold has no yield because there is no risk. Man-made money must offer ROI, because man-made money has risk.

3. Gold has little industrial value. It is not a commodity like copper or oil. During the Great Depression, as commodity prices fell, gold prices did not. The reason the price of gold goes up and down is that the value of paper money is going up and down. The more paper money the government prints to pay its bills, the higher the price of gold. How long can governments keep printing money? No one knows. Silver is both money and an industrial metal… atomic number 47. Many believe this makes silver more valuable than gold, especially as supplies of silver are depleted. I am one of those people. Gold is not used for anything except for jewelry. Gold goes into deep storage because gold is real money. I save real gold and real silver outside the banking system. I do not save cash, stocks, bonds, ETFs, or Bitcoin —

or anything dependent upon a human being, an organization such as a bank, or electricity for its existence.

4. Gold is simple. Life is getting more complex. If there is a “black swan” event — an unknown catastrophe such as another 9/11, or a hacker who wipes out our military weapons systems, or an EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) that fries our electrical system — all money backed by electricity, such as paper money, stocks, bonds, and Bitcoins, will be destroyed.

5. I purchased my first gold coin in Hong Kong in 1972. I paid approximately $50 for that coin, and I still have it. Today it is worth about $1,500. It has not gotten any bigger or more substantial, but the dollar has lost its value. History has proven that not one form of “manmade money” has ever survived. All man-made money, over the course of history, has always gone to its true value: zero. I often wonder if the U.S. dollar, stocks, bonds, or Bitcoin will be around in 20 years. I don’t have to wonder whether gold, silver, and that Yap Island stone money will still be here. Call me old-fashioned, but I still cling to what I can hold.

Best known as the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad — the #1 personal finance book of all time — Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world think about money. He is an entrepreneur, educator, and investor who believes that each of us has the power to makes changes in our lives, take control of our financial future, and live the rich life we deserve. With perspectives on money and investing that often contradict conventional wisdom, Robert has earned an international reputation for straight talk, irreverence, and courage and has become a passionate and outspoken advocate for financial education.

“Many people have milliondollar ideas. They’re confident their new product or service or innovation will make them rich. The problem is: Most people don’t know how to turn their million-dollar idea into millions of dollars.” - Robert Kiyosaki 88

ne summer day, I was standing outside the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, that hot spot for celebrities and wannabes, when I watched a fascinating phenomenon in action. It was the It Factor, that special something only a few people have that almost defies description. In this case, it was radiating from global superstar Chris Hemsworth, the Australia native whose Marvel character Thor has captivated a worldwide audience. Watching him stroll into the hotel and seeing the reaction of his fans made it pretty easy to understand why he’s become one of Hollywood’s hottest leading men.

Playing a long-haired, mythical, hammer-wielding, ass-kicking comicbook character has had a superpower effect on Hemsworth’s career. The original Thor film, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures, burst onto the scene in 2011. It was the 15th highest grossing film that year, doing just a shade under $450 million worldwide. Two years later, Hemsworth followed it with Thor: The Dark World, banking over $644 million worldwide as the series was finding its footing and Hemsworth’s profile as a bona fide action and adventure superstar was taking shape. And late in 2017, Thor: Ragnarok brought in almost $850 million, bringing the franchise total to just a shade under $2 billion at the box office. Those kinds of numbers all but assure fans that a version of Thor Four is probably being written right now. In fact, rumor has it that Hemsworth and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi rang in the New Year together, brainstorming ideas and what-if scenarios for a possible fourth entry in the mega-successful franchise. Even though all of this success and fame has earned Hemsworth a well-deserved spot on the movie industry’s A-list, he seems to take his work a lot more seriously than he takes himself. As he explained, “As a kid, you run around the house pretending to be a superhero, and now to be doing it as a job, I feel very lucky.” It’s this unassuming charm and relatable persona, combined with a chiseled frame and rugged demeanor that have turned him into one of the most likable, bankable actors in Hollywood.

Now he’s moving on to play another type of superhero, one that’s not fictitious. Hemsworth’s latest film is 12 Strong, an action-packed war drama depicting true events that followed 9/11. In this film, Hemsworth plays Captain Mitch Nelson, a real-life hero who leads a U.S. Special Forces team into Afghanistan. The mission is fraught with danger and set inside hellacious, mountainous terrain, as Hemsworth’s character tries to convince the general of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan to join the American dirty dozen to fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda. It’s a powerful, realistic, pulse-pounding film that allows Hemsworth to showcase the impressive depth of his acting. It also gives him a chance to demonstrate his equestrian skills, since this group of American Special Forces soldiers had no other option but to travel on horseback. At no point will you feel you are watching Thor on the screen in 12 Strong. Because of the intense physical requirements of the role and his transformation into an American soldier, Hemsworth must convince audiences to buy into his character and feel the danger of a mission that could very well end horribly. He pulls off the role as well as anyone you could imagine. The success of the real-life mission carried out by Captain Nelson and his team of “Horse Soldiers” would play a key role in thwarting future attacks and combatting terrorism. To fully appreciate how Hemsworth earned his place as a member of Hollywood royalty, it helps to understand his background. ISSUE 1 . 2018

Hemsworth as Thor (Produced by Marvel Studios, distributed by Paramount Pictures)

92

He was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1983, where it was never a foregone conclusion that he and his brother Liam would eventually become pop culture icons. Hemsworth’s parents weren’t famous, they certainly weren’t rich, and Hemsworth and his family spent a substantial and very memorable part of his childhood in Australia’s rugged, remote Outback region. It’s an area that isn’t exactly known for producing jet-setting famous actors. It was in the Outback that Hemsworth got an early introduction to what it means to be a hero. As he stated, “Growing up, my parents were my heroes, in the way they conducted their lives.” He was deeply affected by seeing his parents struggle at times to make ends meet, and it inspired him to do whatever it took to eventually earn enough to pay off the mortgage on his family home. His early career path was hardly glamorous, either. As he explained, “I entered the work force cleaning breast pumps at a pharmacy! It was a part-time gig while I was at school . . . no interview required.” Acting would eventually provide Hemsworth the opportunity he was looking for, but he didn’t just jump into a comic superhero costume. He started his career at the age of 19, appearing in several episodes of a fantasy television series in Australia. After that, he JETSETMAG.COM

segued into the world of soap operas. Those early jobs allowed Hemsworth to work regularly, keep his acting skills sharp, grow as a performer and pay the bills. He even leveraged his burgeoning celebrity status to appear as a contestant in season five of the Australian version of Dancing with the Stars. Those dues-paying days early in his career allowed Hemsworth to evolve in ways that are paying off significantly today. In 2017, he was listed by Forbes Magazine as the 11th-highest paid actor in the world, bringing home an estimated $31.5 million. Even though he’s built himself into a highly bankable Hollywood he-man, the range he has shown as a comedic actor has endeared him to audiences and allowed him to avoid pigeonholing himself into one specific genre. Critics and audiences alike raved about his comic timing in the Thor series, beginning with the second film, which industry experts agree was one of the primary reasons for its radically improved box office numbers. It has been reported that 95 percent of the dialogue in Thor: Ragnarok was improvised. It turns out Hemsworth had some unexpected help coming up with one of his best lines. As he explained, “We had a young kid, a Make-A-Wish kid on set that day. In between

“Growing up, my parents were my heroes, in the way they conducted their lives.” the takes I was talking with him, kind of going back and forth. And he goes ‘You know, you should say, ‘He’s a friend from work!’ So that young man actually came up with it.” Hemsworth delivers the line enthusiastically when he’s about to face an unknown competitor who turns out to be The Hulk played by Mark Ruffalo. Consistent, quality work for over a decade without any scandalous setbacks has allowed Hemsworth to enjoy a very good life, jetting back and forth from Australia to Los Angeles and wherever the principal photography may take him on his films. Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky were living in Malibu up until 2015. They then sold their home and moved with their three young children back to Australia, into a 7.1 million-dollar property near Byron Bay so their kids can enjoy life in Hemsworth’s native land. He even used his surging industry influence to shoot Thor: Ragnarok in Queensland, which meant he didn’t have to commute halfway around the world to his job, like he did to New Mexico for the original Thor. Maybe Hemsworth’s greatest accomplishment is the fact that he remains so likable. For a guy who’s been named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” and has the looks of a Greek god, he seems so well grounded that it’s not likely he’ll let his success go to

his head. Which leads me back to that summer day in Beverly Hills when Hemsworth ducked into a five-star hotel and caused a stir simply with his presence. With no cameras rolling, he simply acted like a guy that was grateful for his lot in life, signing autographs for those who asked. The characters he plays may be larger than life, but his ego obviously isn’t. In Hemsworth’s words, “It’s a very humbling experience any time you have someone come up and say they love what you do and they get great joy from it.” ISSUE 1 . 2018

air loss is a problem for both men and women all over the world. It is estimated that forty to fifty percent of men and women will experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime. In an effort to understand this and help find ways to combat it, Jetset has invited Dr. William Rassman, a world leader in hair restoration, to give us some insight into current trends and state of the art treatment. Jetset: Can you explain hair loss? Dr. R: For men, hair loss is mainly hereditary. It is often said you inherit the trait from your mother’s side, but this is not always the case. Scientists still have not found a specific gene for hair loss, and while it is a genetic trait, it can sometimes skip generations and come from both the mother and father’s side of the family. You can quickly pick out hereditary hair loss in men because it occurs in a specific “pattern.” This is why it is often called Male Pattern Balding (MPB). MPB may start as early as your teenage years as the changing hormones during puberty “triggers” the gene for MPB.

Jetset: What treatments are available for those who are losing hair? Dr. R: For men with genetic hair loss, there are three basic treatments: medication, surgery and scalp micropigmentation. There are medications such as Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil). These drugs help maintain and sometimes regrow hair on the top of the scalp. They do not regrow the receding hairline. For receding hairline, hair restoration surgery can transform a bald young man by establishing a non-balding “frame” to their face giving them their youth William Rassman, M.D., founder of New Hair Institute Medical Group in Los Angeles, California is a professional inventor with more than three dozen U.S. Patents in a wide range of fields. His most notable accomplishment was his pioneering work on the Intra Aortic Balloon Pump which has saved millions of lives. In recent years, his work and patent have been licensed to the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant machine. He is credited for having introduced the modern day hair transplant Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) to the hair restoration community. Dr. Rassman is also the author of Loss and Replacement for Dummies. For more information, visit NewHair.com or call 1-800-NEW-HAIR.

back. Finally for men who are completely bald and want the shaved look without the “horse shoe” outline of a bald man we can mimic the look of a closely shaved head with Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP).

Jetset: Scalp MicroPigmenation sounds very interesting. Can you tell us more about the process? Dr. R: Scalp MicroPigmentation is a permanent medical-grade tattoo similar to permanent makeup or a traditional tattoo. The doctors at the New Hair Institute specially formulate the pigment.

Jetset: Would people be able to tell that you have a tattoo on your head? Dr. R: A great SMP result should be undetectable just like a great hair transplant result. If someone ever compliments you on a great SMP or hair transplant work, then that would mean we did not do a good job. It’s rather ironic that our work will go unnoticed by others and only appreciated by the individual.

Jetset: Would you be willing to share any stories of actors whom had work done? Dr. R: You should know better than that! We can never divulge private patient information. I do wish more people would be open to having had hair restoration procedure so the public can be more aware of what is possible. As I said, the good work should not be detectable. It’s the bad work that gets all the publicity. I will say several of my patients are Oscar winners, but the majority are normal, everyday people.

For more insight, information, and advice from Dr. R on combatting hair loss and hair restoration techniques, visit JetsetMag.com to read our latest Contributing Editor’s column, or email him at wrassman@newhair.com and he will respond promptly.
