TRENDING AIRCRAFT: Hill Helicopters HX50 Hill Helicopters is well on their way to revolutionizing the light helicopter industry with its concept for a sleek, five-seat turbine helicopter model dubbed the HX50. The company plans to bring the HX50 to market as early as 2023 at a price point of US$665,000. An American Supercar Breaks The Mold by David Haraldsen

I

t’s as American as apple pie: for nearly 70 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has been among the automotive world’s most recognizable icons, one that classic car collectors have consistently coveted not only as a savvy investment, but also for the unmatched driving experience afforded by this quintessential American-made V8. With the advent of the high-performance automotive age, though, with high-priced European supercars dominating the road and the buzz, the Corvette was barely a part of the conversation. Clearly, the model needed a revamp, including fresh design cues and cutting-edge technology capable of competing for market share alongside today’s popular exotics. Following years of anticipation and speculation about what Chevrolet’s ambitions would conjure, the all-new 2020 Corvette Stingray made its debut in the summer of 2019. My initial reaction to the 2020 Corvette was equal parts shock and awe. This particular exotic car enthusiast was blown away by the striking body lines and bold supercar vibe of the new ‘Vette. Visual wow factor aside, the obvious question is whether the Corvette’s new mid-engine C8 platform delivers on performance; with a starting price under $60,000, can the new model actually contend with the likes of Ferrari and McLaren? The short answer: YES! Sky-high demand for the new ‘Vette makes it a bit of a unicorn at the moment (albeit not for much longer). Fortunately, our friends at Chevrolet kindly allowed us to spend some with the car to give our readers a first-hand take on how the new 2020 Corvette Stingray lives up to its hype. The heart of the stunning Stingray is its new, naturally aspirated 6.2L small block V8 (dubbed LT2), capable of producing 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the optional Z51 package (a must-have upgrade given the vehicle’s exceptionally low starting price and performance potential). The new motor has been harmoniously synced to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters. The Stingray’s innovative mid-engine configuration launches it from zero to sixty in a staggering 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of up to 194 mph. The new model also features a variety of driving modes to accommodate drivers’ personal preferences, including the unexpectedly smooth Tour mode that turns the snarling American supercar into an exceptionally comfortable daily driving cruiser. A right turn of the control knob presents Sport and Track modes, the latter of which quickly became our go-to setting, with both modes opening the exhaust baffles and stiffening up the suspension.

On the inside, the Corvette features a gorgeous driver-centric cabin design, with cleverly placed buttons for driver and passenger climate control settings along the center console. A racing inspired hexagonal steering wheel allows for easy viewing access to the model’s 12-inch digital instrument panel, while the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is strategically angled toward the driver. Various interior trim levels come in a variety of colors and options of leather, micro suede, and carbon fiber, as well as three different seating choices. Overall, the new interior is a substantial improvement over previous versions and far exceeded our expectations. The new Stingray is available as both a coupe and a convertible, with nearly identical performance metrics (an impressive feat in itself). This also marks the first time a Corvette has featured a hardtop convertible option, with the drop top operating in merely 16 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph while still maintaining the vehicle’s rear trunk space, even with the roof down. The new C8 Corvette has already received massive acclaim, winning multiple Car of the Year awards in addition to taking home the GTLM class win in the 2020 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. he Nashville food scene recently got an upgrade with a luxury edge when James Beard Award-winning and Michelin-starred Chef Tony Mantuano and celebrated wine and hospitality expert Cathy Mantuano joined The Joseph, a Luxury Collection Hotel, as food and beverage partners with the Pizzuti Companies. Prior to putting down roots in Nashville, Tony was the founding chef/partner of Chicago’s iconic Italian restaurant, Spiaggia, where Cathy ran its revered wine program. The Mantuanos direct the culinary experience at The Joseph where three distinct restaurants carry an overarching sensation of refined warmth and comfort, with a welcoming that is synonymous with Italian hospitality. Yolan, The Joseph’s signature restaurant, is ‘Nashville’s love letter to Italy’ as it marries the Mantuano’s Italian influences with the Nashville culture, bringing friendly reception, high standards, classic, simple ingredients, and local produce to light. When constructing the menu, Tony said, “We decided that we wanted to do classical Italian, with a slightly elevated plating design. The pastas honor the Roman culture; the antipastos are creative. Then, for the main course, we have a wood-burning oven for a perfectly

cooked steak or piece of fish.” The lavish dining room features modern décor, contemporary art, a temperature-controlled display case that houses nine 80-pound wheels of Parmigiano-Reggiano, and a wine wall that holds 600 bottles, each of which is carefully curated. Cathy continuously explores the modern viticulture in Italy, where she’s seeing more organic biodynamic sites and more artistically labeled bottles. Denim, inspired by Italy’s casual cafés, is a hip indoor-outdoor rooftop lounge with panoramic views, a lively bar, pool deck, and ambient music. It is laidback luxury with an American Mediterraneaninspired menu. Four Walls, expected to open this fall, is sort of a dive bar but in a more sophisticated manner. It’s cozy and Nashvillefamiliar; an intimate cocktail bar that channels the guys and gals of classic country music. When I spoke with the easygoing (yet passionate) culinary leaders, they expressed great enthusiasm in their role of setting a fresh path for a new hospitality landscape by bringing their authentic Italian cuisine to a place best known for biscuits and BBQ. “Now, there is an element that is raising the ceiling. Nashville has been anxious for fine dining and luxury hotels to arrive to the downtown area.” And here they are. ISSUE 1 . 2021

WHEN BRAINSTORMING, KEEP AN OPEN MIND BY BARRY LABOV

S

o you’re in a creative meeting and the first thing the organizer says is, “There are no bad ideas.” You sit there looking at everyone in the meeting and think to yourself, “Yeah, right, everyone at some point has come up with a bad idea or two.” The reality is, there are indeed bad ideas . . . lots of them, but that’s ok. In fact, bad ideas are a crucial step in the process of getting to a really good idea.

It’s natural to want that first idea to be the idea that works. It’s quicker, makes you feel good and you can get right to the business of executing. That’s not the norm, however. While the world’s greatest innovators are remembered for their successes, they had to go through many failed attempts to get to the one that worked. Many ideas were put to the test, sometimes several at one time. If they were lucky, there was one idea that worked. If they didn’t succeed, they had to go back to the drawing board and start creating and testing more ideas. In his book, “The Medici Effect: Breakthrough Insights at the Intersection of Ideas, Concepts and Cultures,” Frans Johansson states, “The strongest correlation for quality of ideas is, in fact, quantity of ideas.” The more ideas we have, the more likely we will discover quality ideas that can be tested and implemented. Studies have been conducted that support this assertion. When we’re encouraged to develop lots of ideas—good, bad and mediocre—it’s easier to let the creativity flow. There are many strategies out there for creating ideas. One exercise we use in our collaborative strategy sessions is showing clients a positive headline about their company three years in the future. We ask them to discuss what things had to have happened to make that headline a reality. Then we show them a negative headline and ask them to do the same thing. Just imagining these two extremes can focus teams on the right strategies and before you know it, you’re jamming on ideas for executing those strategies. Jamming is a core value at my company. It brings a group together to brainstorm and build off each other’s ideas—much like a band does when jamming to create a new song. Someone plays a few chords, someone else builds on that with their own chords and

before you know it, a song is taking shape. It might not be a numberone chart topper right out of the gate, but it could very well be the foundation of one. Ideating is about exploring. Bad ideas are an integral part of the process. Sometimes you might discover the new world . . . other times you may land in a swamp. Maybe you come up with an idea that could never be executed. It’s just too unrealistic, too out there. Try taking a deeper look and figure out why it’s not possible. Can it be fixed? Can parts of it be combined with another idea? Some of the best ideas are a Frankenstein-type creation—pieces of different ideas that couldn’t stand on their own, but when put together make something that works and is entirely unique. Many successful start-ups seem like a really bad idea at first. Airbnb began with three guys buying air mattresses (the “air” in Airbnb), placing them on the living room floor in their San Francisco loft and renting them out to guests to help pay the rent. As odd it may sound to rent an air mattress in a stranger’s apartment, they actually had a few bites. After some failures and reinventing themselves into a massive online vacation rental business, Airbnb is now worth $38 billion and recently started the IPO process to take the company public. So the next time you’re in a brainstorm session, keep an open mind. Accept that bad ideas are usually not all bad. They are part of the creative process. There may be parts of an idea you can use or maybe it just needs a little help to become a good one. When you limit yourself to good ideas, it’s more likely you’ll subconsciously recycle ideas or parts of ideas you’ve used before. Take a cue from Apple’s headline, Think Different. Be bold. Don’t let the fear of a bad idea stop you from exploring. ISSUE 1 . 2021

HOW HAVING “GOOD” DEBT CAN BE A WISE MOVE BY KEN MCELROY

ost governments around the world are in significant debt and it’s growing. Most people around the world are in significant debt and it’s growing. In the United States and around the world, the coronavirus pandemic and the pending fallout that follows will leave most countries with a lot of unpayable debts. Consumers who lose their jobs will have difficulty making payments on credit cards, auto loans and student loans. Businesses that lose sales will default on loans. It would be one thing if our tax code was designed to fund all the promises we’re making. But it’s not. The U.S tax system does not generate enough revenues to cover the spending that policymakers have enacted. This rapidly growing imbalance between revenues and spending leads to higher and higher annual deficits, and the result is an increasing national debt balance.

This is just basic math. When a country like the United States spends more than it earns, it will get more and more into debt as they have to borrow money (or print money) to cover the shortfall. If you’re dealing with some form of debt, take heart, you’re not alone. According to Debt.org, over 87 percent of United States households are in debt. Debt is not something to be afraid of nor is it too complicated. It is just something, typically money, that is owed or due. Many countries like the United States have many people at home that may be in financial trouble and need to use debt to survive just to cover their expenses or liabilities. However, people at home cannot just “print” money to cover their shortfall, unlike many countries with central banks. Debt is something you need to learn about in order to stay ahead financially in this new economy and the good news is that there is a lot each of us can do. The key is what the debt does for you—and it should always be more than what you do for the debt. But first, let’s talk about inflation. Inflation is the decline of purchasing power of a given currency over time. Many things get more expensive during inflationary periods. This is precisely why Robert Kiyosaki, author of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad,” says, “Savers are losers.” Each month, most of us happily place our money in a savings account. On the surface, it appears we are making the right financial decision, but below is an example to help put things into perspective. Let’s say you were getting a higher-than-average interest rate on your savings account of one percent, and at that time, inflation was two percent. When you run the numbers, you will see that you are

losing money each month and not actually making money. Add on top of that the bank fees, and you lose even more of your savings. A dollar doesn’t buy nearly as much as it once did, as the cliché goes. Since the early 20th century, the decline in the value of a dollar has been dramatic due to inflation. A dollar in 1913 had the same buying power as $26 in 2020. The Federal Reserve System, often referred to as the Federal Reserve or simply “the Fed,” is the central bank of the United States and in its most recent statement, the Fed says it “will likely aim to achieve inflation moderately above two percent for some time.” Federalreserve.gov/faqs/economy_14400.htm Inflation is an important thing to understand as it pertains to your financial future. The truth is, you are either moving forward or backward financially, and the decisions you make will have a major impact on your financial future. Our past President of the United States Ronald Reagan said it best, “Inflation is as violent as a mugger, as frightening as an armed robber and as deadly as a hit man.” When the Fed or central banks increase the money supply (as has happened in the past and will happen in the future), this can create inflation. The worst possible scenario for a central bank is that its quantitative easing strategy may cause inflation without the intended economic growth. An economic situation where there is inflation but no economic growth is called stagflation. This is what we are facing right now. So here is where it gets interesting. Inflation actually helps those that hold debt and penalizes those that hold cash. It’s the opposite of what you might think, but in the future, debt will be an asset and cash will be a liability. Altitude // Estates The government can shrink the mountain of debt weighing down the U.S. economy with inflation and you can do the same if you have debt. Inflation doesn’t care if you are the government or an individual. It just does what it does. Let me explain. Most interest payments are fixed in nominal terms. Inflation makes existing debt less important in real terms. Raising the long-term inflation target from the current two percent to let’s say a still-modest four percent would substantially increase the rate at which debt effectively vanishes over time. History has shown that the U.S. has used inflation to reduce its debt. Economists Joshua Aizenman and Nancy Marion wrote about this in a research paper called “Using Inflation to Erode the U.S Public Debt.” The average inflation rate over the period (from 1946 to 1955) was 4.2 percent . . . inflation reduced the 1946 (federal) debt/GDP 108.6 percent ratio by almost 40 percent within a decade. This all starts to make sense now that the U.S. central bank recently announced a more relaxed view on inflation. It is probable that the Fed is not serious about fighting inflation anymore, and inflation will soon be going up, to reduce our current public debt and deficit, just like it did once before, in 1946. If this is true and we have another decade of higher inflation, just about a four percent inflation rate would lower all debt by about 40 percent, not just government debt, but your debt, too. There is much controversy on the published government inflation rate. Your grandparents may have hidden their money under the mattress and scoffed at the idea of owing anyone money. Using “good” debt is borrowing that helps you build long-term wealth. “Bad” debt, on the other hand,

can harm your credit and deplete your finances. The difference comes down to two factors: risk and cost. I would equate bad debt with taking on too much risk without the ability to repay it. Credit card debt is probably the most common example of bad debt. The average card balance is over $6,000 per person in the Unites States and It’s considered to be a form of bad debt because of its high interest rates. Car loans are another example of bad debt because they’re used to borrow money to buy an asset that depreciates. In general, borrowing to support ongoing living expenses is not a good use of debt. Good debt is debt that’s used to pay for something that has longterm value and increases your net worth (such as a home) or helps you generate income (such as a smart investment). Unless you take on good debt, you may not be able to buy a home or get a college education—all investments that can enhance your income or net worth. Managing debt responsibly also helps you build a good credit history. Since your credit scores can be a factor in everything from renting an apartment to getting a job, a good credit score can open lots of doors. It’s true that it’s better to have no debt than to have bad debt—but having good debt and managing it wisely will be a smart financial move. If you talk to your accountant, they would argue that “the primary difference between liability and debt is that liability is a wide term which includes all the money or financial obligations which the company owes to the other party, whereas the debt is the narrow term and is part of the liability which arises when the funds are raised by the company by borrowing money from the other party.” The above statement is definitely true as it pertains to a financial statement, but when cash and debt are measured in dollars that can be devalued and could erode over time with quantitative easing and through inflation, then it’s better to hold large amounts of debt rather than large amounts of cash. aniel Craig single-handedly shifted the cinematic archetype of James Bond from one-dimensional playboy with a pistol, to a complex, emotionally scarred agent provocateur. More astronauts have moonwalked than have played the iconic role, and Craig has embodied Bond for the longest of all—14 years. In 2005, the “it” Brit was a buff, bleach blond 37 when he cinched the enviable role of the world’s most infamous spy. Now 52, his cropped hair a salty gray, he chuckles about feeling arthritic twinges on rainy days. In 1998, I was first transfixed by Craig as he smashed a supporting role as a cold-blooded priest-cum-assassin in the hypnotizing Elizabeth, starring Cate Blanchett as sovereign. He played the violence with such feral restraint; a damaged, dangerous young man on a cathartic mission. I later interviewed him for Layer Cake at the Tribeca Film Festival in the wake of 9/11. The stylized noir thriller allowed Craig to seethe and smolder with unsentimental intensity, a role that pretty much proved a sizzle reel to play the orphan turned steely MI6 agent. More state of mind than mere color, I recall flinching under the gaze of Craig’s piercing ice-blue eyes—two gas-rings left to burn on the highest setting—in a wordplay encounter that lingered for days. The business of Bond speaks volumes. Craig’s films in the title role have already grossed more than $3 billion to date. The cunning actor subtly but fundamentally rebuilt the role from the brogues up; he smashed the 007 mold in more ways than one. With an estimated budget of $250 million, No Time To Die is the most expensive Bond film to date, and one of the most costly films ever made full stop. The much-delayed release is reportedly costing MGM around $1 million per month in interest. Held back from its original April 2, 2020 release date, fans anticipated the next installment in the US on November 20. As coronavirus cases rose and cinemas in key markets remained closed, the studio announced that the film will be delayed once more. Eric Gitter, producer of Extraction and Atomic Blonde, deems it money well spent. “When you consider the “event” nature of a historic edition such as Bond 25, this strategy will pay off in spades,” he muses optimistically on our call. “If MGM schedules the release wisely, it may mark the return to life as we recognize it. From a business perspective, it boils down to protecting your initial investment. The appetite for finally seeing this film theatrically, when it is safe to do so, will feel symbolic in a sense. This premiere promises to be a juggernaut if played right.” Martin Katz, internet pioneer and producer behind David Cronenberg’s finest work and Oscar-nominated Hotel Rwanda, agrees. “There is no sense releasing a film to a world that lacks theatre screens. And there is a precedent for holding back films. It was reported that Paramount delayed the release of The Sum of All Fears after 9/11 because of its terrorist attack plot,” he explains. “In an increasingly unstable world, the theatrical business may now have to face market timing not just around school holidays, but also wildfires, political unrest and pandemics.”

In speaking with Kirstine Stewart, Head of the Future of Media, Entertainment and Information and Member of the Executive Committee at the World Economic Forum, she gives us a macro perspective. “In a world where a new streaming service seems to be launched almost weekly, MGM is in the unique position of being one of the few studios with a great catalogue of content, but with no streaming service of its own,” she observes. “The James Bond series is their jewel in the crown, and it makes a lot of sense for MGM to preserve the exclusive theatrical nature of their next Bond release while Apple and others are rumored to be looking at them for acquisition.” At press time, No Time To Die is currently slated for an October 8, 2021 release. The new year certainly hasn’t magically resolved the issues that have held the industry hostage; the same market forces remain in play and continue to inform the strategic decisions of distributors. “What we are seeing is studios’ streaming services growth strategy at work. But as studios launched streaming services the gates were put in place and they kept titles for themselves - Warner Brothers’ Wonder Woman 1984 pops up on HBO. High stakes Hollywood tradecraft of the highest order. With a significant chunk of the marketing budget spent, the date change would likely leave the studio hemorrhaging between $30M and $50M out of pocket–hardly chump change, but better than taking a Covid-19 direct hit and losing out on an estimated $300M. The Bond cinematic lexicon firmly remains a family business, which only intensifies the mystique and mythology. Albert Broccoli shot Dr. No, the first film in the franchise, in 1962. Fifty-eight years and 25 movies later, the torch is carried by his daughter Barbara Broccoli and stepson, Michael G. Wilson, who began his career on

When asked if this legacy gives No Time to Die a kind of “unicorn status” when it comes to release flexibility, Gitter remarks, “Film fans have an affinity for Bond that allows for inspiring re-imaginings and revivals. If I was running MGM, I would be taking the same steps.” Working with charismatic draws like Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, Gitter has seen firsthand the value of an A-list lead simply owning the part from day one, as Craig has. “He’s absolutely a part of that advantage,” he concludes. When it comes to a dual filmmaker and business-friendly distribution ecosystem, where online and the theatrical experience coexists and works in synergy, Katz conceives of theatrical enhancements leading the way. We saw a glimmer of this with Uncut Gems, Roma, and The Irishman (all of which had a minor gap, or none at all, between cinematic and online release dates). “I saw all three in a theatrical environment. Without exception, my experience of seeing those titles was superior to colleagues who stayed home to watch them on streaming platforms,” Katz enthuses. “Windows between theatrical and home video or streaming releases are now going to get narrower. We may well see additional scenes in theatrical release films that will increase their attractiveness to true fans the way Imax, ATMOS, 3D and RealD enhancements already do.”

Katz sees a real opportunity for the Bond franchise to grow out of its mold. “It would be interesting to see them follow the lead set by Armando Iannucci in The Personal History of David Copperfield and Ava Duvernay in Bridgerton and finally give us the gift of Idris Elba as Bond,” the intrepid impresario proposes. On the lasting legacy of Daniel Craig, Stewart relishes in the stamina of the actor as he takes his final curtain. “I’m Craig’s age, so as he’s gotten older as a fan it is fun to watch and wince with every stunt, thankful I’m in the audience passively watching him make 50-something look good on Bond,” she reflects. “I say Skyfall is Craig’s best Bond film to date - from Adele’s opening note to the Scottish landscapes to the farewell to Dame Judy to the end.” What is crystal clear is that cinema and culture remain cherished by society. Exceedingly relevant, especially in moments of adversity such as this. Cinemas may come back to find the audience has changed. Anxiety has been hardwired into us, as we grasp the gravity of our stark new world realities. Daniel Craig’s Bond understands the gravitas behind unseen and unshakeable odds. He’ll be the ideal antidote after an annus horribilis—to borrow from Queen Elizabeth—when we can all catch our breath, and marvel in breathless signature Bond sequences in the cinema once more. lthough several years have passed since that fateful day, it lives in my memory as if were yesterday. It was a lesson not only about power, but about the strength to face challenges head on and affirm our unwavering commitment to a mission. This was the situation: Peter asked to have lunch with me. There was something he wanted to discuss. Peter had worked for us in two of our many companies. He had moved up the ranks over the years and was now in charge of all operations for our hobby-turnedbusiness company. It was a favorite of mine. I liked Peter. I trusted him. I considered him a friend. He started the conversation with these words: “There are two things I want your agreement on . . . If not, I will quit.” I was completely taken aback. This ultimatum had come totally out of the blue. “Quit?” I asked. “Really?” Then, as the reality of the situation set in, I asked, “What are the two things you want?” “What I want,” he stated, “is an equity share in the company. The second thing I want is to shift the company’s sole focus to making money.” I took a deep breath . . . and just listened. Peter went on to explain why these changes were important to him and he kept reiterating that “. . . otherwise I will quit.” I left that lunch meeting in a state of shock. My head was spinning. Peter had been running our company for several years. He knew more about the company than anyone else—including me. Because of my trust in him I had turned over much of the responsibility for running the company, and my day-to-day involvement was minimal. JETSETMAG.COM

My first thought was, “If he quits, then who would run the company?” My next thought was, “I would have to jump in and run the company.” My plate was already very full with two of our other companies that I was very involved in. Initially, I felt both ambushed and trapped—as if I had no other option but to give in to his ultimatum. Then I took a breath . . .

High Emotion—Low Intelligence A saying we have is, “When emotions are high, intelligence is low.” So I did my best to take my emotions out of the equation . . . and took a hard look at what he wanted: equity in the company and replacing our mission with money. Equity. Many years ago, when I was just starting out as an entrepreneur, I was taught a valuable lesson. An accountant wanted a small ownership stake in one of my first companies in exchange for her accounting services. Instead of having to pay her every month, she would contribute her accounting skills to the business. As I was considering this proposition, a very dear and wise friend named Frank said to me, “Kim, never give up equity for services that you can buy in the marketplace. Only give up equity if someone brings something truly unique to the table.” Did Peter bring something truly unique to the table? My answer was an unequivocal “No.” And now that I was questioning both his loyalty and his friendship, I had to admit that I could pay someone to do what he was doing. So, I could not agree to his first demand.

Altitude // Finance His second “ask” went against everything I believe as a business owner and entrepreneur. The purpose of a business is to solve a problem. If you find a need that no one else is fulfilling—and you fill that void—then the money will be a by-product of that product or service. In my experience, whenever the primary focus of a business is to make money, that business will never grow far. On top of that, this was a mission-driven company. And, as we were fond of saying, “Don’t mess with the mission.” So my answer to his second demand was also a most definite “No.” But what was really gnawing at me was how I was feeling inside. I felt as if I was given an ultimatum, not a “let’s work this out together” option. It also seemed that Peter thought he had me backed into a corner. As if he was confident in saying, “You need me. You’ll give me whatever I ask for. You cannot afford to have me quit.” And with that, my trust in him was broken. And that’s when the lightbulb went on . . . I knew what needed to be done. If I felt that I absolutely must have Peter stay with the company, then I am at high need. And if I am in high need of him not quitting, then that puts me in a position of low power when it comes to negotiating with him. High need, low power. Believe me, this is a horrible position in which to find yourself.

The question I then had to ask myself was, “How do I go from a position of high need–low power to one of low need–high power?” The answer came quickly. And it would immediately reverse the equation. To put myself in a position of low need—high power, I had to allow Peter to quit. It was not a pleasant decision, but it felt like the right decision.

Every Day Is a Negotiation Have you ever been in a negotiation, in business or with a family member, where you felt there was only one answer? You had to have that one outcome and nothing else would do? For example, “Yes, dear, I’ll buy you that new bike if you’ll stay at grandma’s this weekend.” Or “Of course, Mr. Customer, I will cut my price on your order if you’ll tell my boss what a great job I’ve done for you.” Or “Yes, I will give you the raise you want, just don’t leave the company.” In each of these instances you know you’re giving in and taking the easy, short-term path of least resistance. The problem is that you know, in the pit of your stomach, you’ve compromised a piece of yourself to get what you think you needed at the time. JETSETMAG.COM


Low Need—High Power How do you go from a position of high need–low power to one of low need—high power? I will tell you this, making this switch requires you to take the harder road, not the easy one . . . and to make decisions that do not simply placate, conciliate or pacify. We face situations every day in which we are put into positions of high need–low power without ever realizing it... There is only one grocery store that has your favorite brand of coffee, but because of “social distancing” there is now a line outside the store. And you hate waiting in line. Your high need of this specific brand of coffee and low power forces you to wait fifteen minutes to get into the store. How to reverse it? Seek out an even better brand of coffee somewhere else. Order multiple bags online and have it delivered. Or find out what days and times the store is least busy and shop then. How often have you faced airline delays that caused you to miss flights or have to stay overnight at an airport hotel? I dealt with that exact situation not long ago in Savannah, Georgia. I was flying from Savannah to Phoenix via Atlanta. I was at the gate waiting for my flight to Atlanta when they announced mechanical problems that would delay us thirty minutes. I thought, “No problem. I have plenty of time for my connection.” Thirty minutes turned into one hour, and then it became an hour and a half. Now I would miss my connection in Atlanta and have to spend the night in Atlanta. My high need was

that I needed to get to Phoenix for a meeting the next day. I would have to wait it out. Low power was that there were no other flights that afternoon that would get me to Phoenix. I was at the mercy of the airline. How to reverse it? The questions I asked were, does my “high need” really exist? And is there another option? Sure enough, I made some quick calls and we agreed to do the meeting via Zoom and we would follow up with a face-to-face later in the week. With that I left the gate, rented a car and headed back to my vacation home where I had a wonderful stress-free evening. The next day I flew back to Phoenix.

The Opposite Is Also True... This also works in reverse. Often times we chase after an outcome that we think must come to fruition without asking ourselves, is this outcome really that important? And is this the best outcome possible? For example, a good friend of mine was meeting with a potential business partner for his highly-innovative learning organization. He told me, “I went into that meeting crystal clear on what I wanted to get from that meeting. I knew the exact outcome I wanted and I used ISSUE 1 . 2021

every power of persuasion to get it.” He cut to the chase in admitting: “And guess what happened? It was a disaster. I didn’t hear a word anyone was saying because I was so hell-bent on getting my outcome out of that meeting.” He went on to say, “Since then I have learned to go into meetings with no definite outcome or solution. I am truly there to listen and brainstorm. And guess what happens?” He didn’t wait for my response before he said: “The outcomes, the solutions we come to are always better than what I could have come up with on my own.” So sometimes if you are in high need of attaining a specific outcome, you can quickly put yourself in a position of low power in achieving the best possible result. Turn the Tables... One way to identify if you are in a high need–low power situation is to ask yourself these questions: “Do I feel like I have no other option?” “Do I feel like I’m being taken advantage of and have no way out?” The ultimate turnaround is the “walk out.” Buying a car is often the perfect example of this. You find the car of your dreams and you begin the negotiation. You think you’ve reached a deal when another cost or twist is added to the mix. You finally get so fed up with the negotiation that you walk out on the deal. This is a prime example of

going from high need—”I want this car.” — to low need — “I’ll buy my car somewhere else.” Ideally, when we find ourselves in a high need—low power position, there can be many options in which both parties can get what they want. The first step, however, is to recognize when you are in a high power–low need negotiation (even with your kids) and then take the steps necessary to come to the optimal solution. The best way that I’ve found to turn the tables from high need to low need is to take a hard look at my options and alternatives. In most cases I find that what I perceived as ‘high need’ was, in fact, high comfort . . . or blissful complacency . . . or my path of least resistance. One thing I’ve found to be true with most every entrepreneur I’ve met is that we are great at finding solutions . . . and that ability can turn the tables in shifting high need to low need—even no need. And that’s the power we hold . . . in taking control and ensuring that all of our negotiations are from the position of high power. Your highest values filter your attentions and sensory perceptions of reality and help you selectively attend to and bias the received information according to the hierarchy of your values, or what is most important to least important in your life. Your inter-neuron decisions are based on what you believe at each moment will provide you with the greatest number of advantages over disadvantages, rewards over risks. And your intentions and motor actions will be most consistent with what you truly value most.

Knowing what’s highest on your unique list of values or priorities and learning how to live by your highest priority can transform your life and awaken your greatest potential.

It is therefore wise to know what is truly most important, or what is truly highest on your list of values—particularly your highest priority. Many people have unrealistic expectations, delusions and fantasies about what is important to them instead of looking at what actually is important and what their lives actually demonstrate. In one of my most popular seminar programs I present, the Breakthrough Experience®, I have worked with thousands of individuals who say they have goals that they intend to accomplish, but somehow they don’t ever get around to beginning or following through on the very crucial action steps to achieving them. They will often not either initially act on them, act on them only half-heartedly, or soon give up, and they are then left with the perception that there is something wrong with them, or that they lack self-discipline. But, in fact, it is simply not truly as important as they initially imagined or fantasized about. In many of these cases, I found that this was often a result of them injecting and inculcating other people’s values—people they have unwisely put on a pedestal and envied and tried to imitate—instead of honoring what was truly most important within themselves. So, they end up self-depreciating, beating themselves up, trying to live in other people’s values and trying to conform instead of standing out and being unique. Therefore, they experience futility more than certainty and utility.

Many people often say they want to do something they claim is important, but their actions don’t demonstrate that it truly is. Your actions speak louder than your words. I often hear people say, “I want to do this, and I want to do that, but I just keep sabotaging it and not doing it.” My response to them is that it’s likely that they don’t consciously know what their true highest values are and what is evidently most important.

One of the reasons I put a complimentary Demartini Value Determination Process on my website (drdemartini.com) is because there are millions of people who are wandering around thinking that they know what is truly most important to them, when their lives already indicate that they don’t—at least consciously. As a result, they often end up setting goals that aren’t really theirs, and then wondering why they are not fulfilling them or making tangible progress in their pursuit. I often say to my students that depression is often due to a comparison of your current reality to a fantasy about how you or your life are “supposed” to be. Many people have fantasies that they are going to be or do something that’s not really as valuable or as important as they initially imagined it to be, which is one of the many reasons why I am inspired to talk about the importance of values as much as I do. This is seen every January with New Year’s resolutions. ISSUE 1 . 2021

Altitude // Inspire Every human being consciously or unconsciously lives by a set of priorities or set of values or that which is most important to least important in their life. Their set of values is unique to them. They are like fingerprints. Therefore, trying to copy somebody else’s set of values or priorities is almost certain to diminish your potential and result in your being second at being somebody else, instead of being first at being the true and authentic you. There’s actually no competition to your true you. There only appears to be competition to people similar to you, maybe, but not the authentic and unique you. That unique set of values you live by does change over your life—you will tend to have different priorities and values when you are a child or teenager than when you are more mature or an older adult. It would be wise to prioritize and structure your life around and fulfill what is truly most important to you at any one moment in time. Not narcissistically at the expense of others, but equitably and sustainably where you fulfil your highest values while you also simultaneously serve and solve the problems for others. Your self-worth tends to go up when you live spontaneously by and congruently with your true highest value(s). When you set a goal that is aligned with your true highest value, you’re most likely to be spontaneously inspired to act on it and have the highest probability of achieving it. You are also more likely to embrace whatever challenges you may face in the pursuit of it because when your “why” is big enough your “hows” take care of themselves. Your highest value can be perceived as being your “why” or most meaningful mission. Your highest value is also what you filter your perceptions, decisions and actions by. It has been defined as the telos by the ancient Greeks, which is your teleological purpose or mission. So when you are looking for a sense of purpose and mission in life, it’s right there in your very highest value.

Your highest value or priority is what you are most likely to build momentum toward and excel at. Your highest value is where you tend to be the most inspired, most spontaneously active, and where you are likely to be the most fulfilled and find the most meaning by. It’s also where you tend to be the most objective, balanced, resilient, adaptable, disciplined, reliable and focused and expanded in awareness and potential. It’s also where you tend to expand your space and time horizons, open the doors for expanded opportunities, and play in a bigger field of possibility. When you’re unwisely attempting to live according to other’s values through imitating or conforming and not living by your own true highest values, it is most often due to making inequitable comparisons between yourself and others more so than by comparing your own actions to your own highest values.

The moment you minimize yourself and compare yourself to other people, thinking with admiration that they have or do something more than yourself, then you put them on a pedestal and yourself in the pit, in turn. You’ll exaggerate them and minimize you and you’ll likely inject some of their values which will cloud the clarity of your own highest value or inspired mission of service and fulfilment. Values flow in society from those who have the most power to those with the least power, perceptually. So, the second you minimize yourself and inject other’s values, you’re likely to cloud the clarity of your own highest values. This is when you can begin feeling uncertain and give your natural intrinsic power away to others. Then the more uncertain you feel, the more you will tend to offload your decisions back to the people that you give your power to. You might also compare yourself to other people and feel proud and superior to them, and then try to project your own values onto them. Both injecting values from others, or projecting values on to others are impossible to sustain—trying to live in other people’s values or trying to get them to live in yours long-term is futile. You have a natural inclination to want to be authentic and to be loved and appreciated for who you are and so do they. And your identity revolves around and is an expression of your highest value and so, too, for others.

Any time you are not living by your highest values and try to live by other people’s values you envy or admire, it can result in internal conflict. Many psychological conditions emerge out of such an internal conflict between what you think you “should” be doing, “ought” to be doing, “supposed” to be doing, “need” to be doing, “have’ to be doing, and “must” be doing that result from other people’s expectations and values, instead of your own, or what they “should” be doing in turn. It is wiser to: • Know what your true highest value is and give yourself permission to live congruently according to whatever that is daily; • Structure your life by priority and do the highest priority daily actions that serve the greatest number of people that also compensate you financially in return in fair exchange; and • Fill your day with high-priority actions that inspire you, instead of with low-priority distractions that don’t.
