s always, the affluent lifestyle is represented very well in this issue. Our Fall Watch Guide is always a huge hit, and after navigating the most exclusive corners of Jewelry Week in Las Vegas, our comprehensive review covers timepieces ranging from a $315,000 Bovet to far more accessible diver’s watches. For those of you looking for sartorial elegance to pair a new timepiece with, The Fashion Collective inside has the latest trends from Versace, Monique Lhuillier, Louis Vuitton, and many others top designers. Our travel features include a stop on gorgeous Kiawah Island, off the coast of Charleston, where we show you the best dining, accommodations, attractive real estate investment opportunities, and best golf courses in the US. We stay in the South for an exciting peek into the vibrant and flourishing scene in Nashville, showing you just what makes Music City so special, before taking a detour to stunning Harbour Village in the tiny, secluded Caribbean paradise of Bonaire. Finally, our CEO and Publisher himself, Darrin Austin, takes you inside the most incredible flight of his life in the cockpit of a fighter jet with the legendary Breitling Jet Team! Staying with our themes of elegance and excellence, Feature Editor Ty Fahlman delivers three probing profiles on three very different masters of their craft. The first is our cover story of an American icon, the great Tom Hanks, with photos shot by the brilliant Jesse Dittmar. In his new film Sully (directed by another American Icon, Clint Eastwood), Hanks portrays the famous pilot responsible for the “Miracle on the Hudson,” and we take you inside how Hanks became the American hero. We also have a profound and insightful sit-down with Gary Player, the “World’s Most Traveled Athlete,” who has flown a staggering 14 million miles in his illustrious 80 years. Finally we journey inside the incredible life of another brilliant photographer, Michael Muller, who has shot some of the most astonishing images of sharks ever for his new book. As always, our executive contributors deliver invaluable insight and this issue is filled with so much phenomenal knowledge and advice that it’s impossible to put a dollar amount on. Our favorite shark, Daymond John, breaks down the virtues of owning versus chartering private jets. Barry Labov teaches you how to foster employee trust with your business, while Dr. John Demartini teaches you how to better manage your priorities. And shifting to world affairs, Ken McElroy discusses our education system, while Robert Kiyosaki offers personal wisdom on fighting terrorism. Please enjoy the issue and everything inside, and thank you to the millions of people who continue to visit JetsetMag.com every month for more exclusive content from our esteemed contributors!

ll seasoned jetsetters possess a keen eye for the attire they wear on their grandiose escapes. Whether sipping martinis in the French Mediterranean or seafaring the glassy waters of the Caribbean, they like to make a statement. To complement their exceptional itinerary, we offer a glimpse into the most avantgarde ready-to-wear trends from a few choice designers’ lust-worthy collections. JETSETMAG.COM
versace As the mastermind of fashion in pop culture, Versace maintains bold color and architectural elegance in every garment. The luxury Italian fashion house launched women’s fashion in 1978, opening their first boutique in Milan’s Via Della Spiga. In line with the season’s trends, the violet and orange Duchess dress in luxurious zebra print pairs immaculately with the Palazzo Empire Bag and Medusa Sandals radiating unrivaled high-style. versace.com
Monique Lhuillier Provoking luxe femininity with modern sophistication, Monique Lhuillier’s dainty details make up a line all her own with soft lace, bold floral, and chic A-line hems. The luxury lifestyle brand — which includes Bliss Bridal and ML Monique Lhuillier — was established in 1996, and offers ready-towear, evening gowns and couture bridal for fanciful females. Lhuillier’s signature looks and ethereal quality take it down a notch in her 2016 resort collection which prudently blends business with play and leaves us falling in love with each and every piece. Botanical print frocks are similar to those of the early 1950s, while loose and lightweight pantsuits offer a flirty take on office apparel. And by the end, boundless embroidery and appliques will mentally escort you to a romantic French rose garden. moniquelhuillier.com
st. john The high-end American knitwear designer St. John is most known for its use of primary colors and elaborate yarn work. Knitted blazers and skirt suits are the brand’s outstanding trademark, but they design everything from luxury swimwear and accessories to evening gowns. Capturing the mood of the arid landscape, the designer’s pre-fall 2016 collection, entitled Desert Dream, conveys everything that the name suggests. Earth tones of sand and bronze complement brighter hues of fire coral and vibrant midnight and carry over to a mesmerizing array of prints and intricate jacquard. Styles reminiscent of a colorful Afghan throw are tastefully trimmed in fringe, while casual bohemian dresses feature modest necklines and flared hems. For eveningwear, dramatic gowns in shimmery shades impart an aura of the Southwest nightsky and are subtly sexy while at the same time, prodigiously elegant. stjohnknits.com
Michael Kors The global brand Michael Kors embodies a sporty, jet-set aesthetic with deluxe clothing and sought-after accessories, with their exclusive women’s collection offering unparalleled opulence at a reasonable price point. The designer’s spring/summer 2016 collections convey the essence of the early renaissance with loose, layered blouses, stand-out belts, and iron-clad studded details. In line with the season’s trends, suede jackets color-blocked to perfection and multi-layered dresses take on a modern day gypsy vibe. The collection epitomizes “earthy elegance” with light, airy looks adorned with watercolor florals and all the soft frills to match. Draping leather satchels take on a bohemian quality and pair effortlessly with seamless silhouettes, all in the name of MK. michaelkors.com ISSUE 3 . 2016

Louis Vuitton The unrivaled fashion house, Louis Vuitton, settles for nothing short of perfection — especially when it comes to typifying their own personal monogram. Most notable is the house’s pristine luggage collection, which has remained a classic since its creation in 1854. The house and America’s Cup, bonding over their simultaneous love for travel, have introduced an exclusive collection in honor of the 2017 fleet race regattas. Sharp windbreakers, neoprene sneakers, cargo shorts, quilted gilets, and sleek turtlenecks round out the savvy, seafaring line. The collection also features two regatta travel bags that are must-haves for avid jetsetters. In masculine damier cobalt canvas, the bags feature the Gaston-Louis Vuitton logo in blue, red, and white multi-color and are undeniably sophisticated — even while being stowed away in the overhead bin. louisvuitton.com
tom ford Tom Ford launched his eponymous accessories line in 2006 and continues to manufacture sought-after leather goods, jewelry, and shoes for charmingly-sophisticated males, with dress shirts and designer denim to compliment the looks. The men’s spring/summer 2016 collection features dark alligator and metallic calf-leather card holders and bi-fold wallets, casual Cambridge sneakers, as well as sleek, lace-up dress shoes. Renowned T-buckle belts in luxurious leather are a reinterpretation of the classic and compliment ever-so-dapper pocket watch chains. Apart from the collection, sunglasses in a variety of styles take us skyhigh with enthusiasm. Signature aviators and wayfarers comprise the trendiest pieces in the men’s shade collection. Truly, the line features the impeccable little additions to complete any man’s signature look. tomford.com
Hugo Boss The German brand Hugo Boss began in 1924 with a focus on manufacturing readymade men’s suits. Later, fragrances were introduced, and now exists a global clothing and accessories fashion house as part of BOSS, BOSS Orange, BOSS Green, and HUGO. The brand most recently released a Boss for Mercedes-Benz collection with Mercedes AMG Petronas team racing drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg as the faces of the campaign. The six-piece, sophisticated, jet-black line warrants modest street style on and off the race track. Smooth leather and trim cuts give racers a little extra momentum. Jackets of lambskin, nylon, and textured cotton layer well over soft, breathable t-shirts and polos. Lustrous black calfskin sneakers finish off the line with ease. Ideal for the exceedingly debonair male, the collection is urban and sporty, yet refined. hugoboss.com

he ICON A5 marks a ravishing return to the original spirit of aviation. Think unbridled flying and the sheer thrill of feeling airborne. Powersports have a new champion in ICON CEO Kirk Hawkins, as he’s bringing sensual hedonism back to the world of private pleasure craft.
I arrive at the launch in Napa Valley with healthy journalistic skepticism, ready to be underwhelmed. The hyperbolic pomp heralding the ICON A5 is rarely seen in this notoriously jaded industry. Talking points like “light sport” and “folding-wing amphibian” tend to incite eye rolls among aeronautic insiders. Until now. It’s truly hard to remain stoic in the face of such intoxicating aerial thrills. First of all, sitting in the two-seater cockpit is not unlike kicking back in a sporty convertible — the dashboard and interior bears more in common with a luxury sedan than a utilitarian transport. In keeping with the laid-back Silicon Valley sensibility, this gathering of top aviation and lifestyle media on Lake Berryessa feels
like summer camp. Two fully-stocked houseboats flank a sandbar where the barbecue pit is abuzz. Camera crews capture three A5 planes in tight formation worthy of a Fourth of July airshow. The vibe is spot-on, as ultimately, this launch is all about lifestyle. The A5 is that next-level aspirational trophy, provoking envy in both your private plane and bespoke boat cohort. Anchoring this air of conviviality is the dashing Hawkins, the man of the hour. The Stanford Business School alumnus and former Air Force F-16 pilot flies his modern marvel of engineering while sporting a t-shirt and sandals, illustrating his ethos rather perfectly. Like most visionaries, he’s invested in sparking a broader cultural and philosophical shift. “Flying can be wondrous in and of itself, not merely a way to get from point A to B,” Hawkins muses. “It’s thrilling, the potential for a sporting community to rise and rally around the A5...social flying clubs inspiring a new generation of aviation and design enthusiasts.” At the top of the morning, instructor Greg Zackney tells me to hop into the pilot’s seat. I must admit, it’s a rush to take the main yoke, a testament to how refreshingly un-intimidating this plane really is. The most smashing achievement? Earning its nickname as the “Tesla of planes,” this all-composite amphibious light-sport aircraft weighs just 1,000 pounds, with an impressive range of 450 miles. I’ve held

posh steak knives that weigh more than the A5’s removable side panels. Such innovations allow for a casual effervescence, and soon I find myself winging my elbow out the window, channeling Steve McQueen in Bullet. After relishing an unparalleled experience landing on both aquatic and terrestrial runways in the first fully-conforming ICON A5, I can attest that this game-changer exceeds its high expectations. In fact, this revolutionary craft redefines the very notion of “runway.” The world is a catwalk for the A5, boasting the stamina of Heidi Klum with its range, and the gravitas of Gisele Bündchen with its flawless aerial lines. Even prior to the final design phase, ICON made aviation history with the A5’s Angle of Attack system. The California-based company’s aeronautical engineers built the world’s first production aircraft to comply completely with the FAA’s 23 spin-resistance standards, benefitting from decades of NASA research. Firing up the 100-horsepower Rotax 912 iS engine, I’m pumped to put this to the test. The A5 shut us down when we tried to provoke it into a spin; it simply won’t be goaded into stalling, even on a dramatic ascent. Smart interior design coupled with the stellar responsiveness of the yoke encourages a surprisingly relaxed body position. I feel like Jordan Spieth on the Masters putting green rather than a complete novice piloting a $250,000 plane. And the adrenaline junkie in me

“It’s thrilling, the potential for a sporting community to rise and rally around the A5, social flying clubs inspiring a new generation of aviation and design enthusiasts.” - Kirk Hawkins, CEO couldn’t resist a round of high-G donuts on water, proving this plane is also one of the best maneuvering boats to boot. Hotly anticipated since 2008 — to the tune of $450 million worth of pre-orders — this summer’s delivery of the ICON A5 marks the beginning of a new era in both aviation and transportation. Early adopters are drawn to its safety and ease, and the LSA license necessary to operate it requires about half as much in-flight training as a regular pilot’s license (about 20 hours). Suddenly, a romantic escape to the mountains, or a retreat to a remote island for an impromptu bonfire picnic seems as easy as driving to the store for milk. Consider me impressed.

The Thrill of a Lifetime By darrin austin 40 40

I
am 10,000 feet above the ground, upside down, and every part of my body is feeling the legendary effects of G force. They told me I was going to experience up to eight Gs — which essentially means I am going to feel eight times my body weight — and they weren’t lying. They also told me to tighten up all my muscles as they perform these astonishing aerobatic maneuvers in an attempt to prevent blood from rushing to my head, and I am trying to do that but I am also overcome by a sensation that feels like a roller coaster times 10. Maybe that isn’t the best analogy, as I cling to the cockpit for dear life and learn that we are going nearly 500 miles per hour, I can’t help but think that this is the most incredible sensation I have ever felt in my life. As the CEO and founder of Jetset, I have been fortunate enough to do some pretty unbelievable things over the last seven-plus years — things the average person (or even the average affluent person) rarely gets to do. I have had dinners with celebrities and flown on private planes with business and political icons. I have been to some of the most unbelievable resorts, restaurants, and destinations. I have eaten the best food, driven the fastest cars, and been to the most exclusive parties. But nothing in my tenure has ever compared to this. I am a special guest of Breitling, the legendary Swiss watchmaker, at their Breitling Experience — a special, invitation-only event in Florida earlier this year. The event is for the company’s most cherished jeweler clients and buyers of the Bentley Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series automobiles. I am proud to say that my wife (Jetset Editor-in-Chief Tami Austin) and I were privileged enough to be the only media partners invited to the event. We figured it would be a great party. But we really had no idea what we were in for.
Precision. Speed. Audacity. These are the words Breitling uses to describe its Jet Team — the largest professional civilian aerobatic jet team in the world. The Dijon, France-based team is made up of former fighter pilots and other aviation aces who perform daring aerial feats while flying in formation in a fleet of seven sleek L-39C Albatros jets. The team is currently dazzling audiences in air shows across the country for its 2016 North American Tour. It’s natural that Breitling would sponsor this precision team, since the watchmaker has a long history in aviation dating back to 1931 when they developed the first onboard chronographs for use in aircraft cockpits. Breitling is also famous for creating the chronomat: a precision instrument that has become the benchmark for chronographs worn by pilots. In 2002, Breitling also began partnering with Bentley to provide technical instruments and onboard clocks for the aforementioned Continental GT — the most powerful Bentley ever built. (I used to have one, and I can attest to its deceptively smooth power.) Upon arrival in Florida, Tami and I settle into our luxurious ocean view accommodations at the Boca Beach Club: a Waldorf Astoria Resort located in Palm Beach County the Gold Coast. After checking into our lavish room, we arrive in the lobby for a brief introduction ISSUE 3 . 2016

to members of the Breitling staff. After a drink, we board the resort’s water taxi, Mizner’s Dream, for a scenic trip to Lucca Trattoria for a dinner of fine Tuscan cuisine where we met the elite pilots of the team I be flying with the next day. These guys are going to have my life in their hands. I hang on their every word. In the morning, we enjoy a hearty breakfast at the resort’s SeaGrille restaurant. (Breitling recommended we have a good breakfast to help maintain our blood sugar levels in preparation for the flight.) Then we are transported to the Sheltair hangar in Pompano Beach where we don authentic Breitling flight suits and are given a pre-flight orientation that includes a demonstration on how to use the ejection seat should it become necessary. (Side note, I really hope it wouldn’t become necessary.) After a few more refreshments, we are ready to take off. Tami — either less adventurous or way smarter than me, depending upon how you look at it — elects to safely enjoy the show from the ground. So I kiss her farewell and board the jet with former fighter pilot Bernard Charbonnel. Doing so, I can’t help but feel like Maverick from Top Gun. As a lover of aviation since childhood, this truly was a dream come true. And while I am a student pilot and a pretty experienced skydiver, I have certainly never had the opportunity to do anything like this before. Am I scared? Do I have second thoughts? Ugh…. Too late. Soon those unbelievable engines fire up and we are off in formation. This alone is an amazing experience, because the jets come

as close as 10 feet apart. You’re normally never in a plane and another plane is right there on your wing, let alone being surrounded by them. After flying out over the ocean, the pilots turn back toward land and start doing barrel rolls in formation. These maneuvers give me an even greater respect for these expert aviators. I wonder how on earth they manage to keep their composure while doing barrel rolls. Soon I have lost all sense of reality. I can’t tell up from down. It is absolutely surreal, and I am laughing like a little kid the entire time. When the flight of my life finally comes to an end my whole body is numb. My senses are shot. I am in shock, yet still elated, my heart beating a million miles a minute. It was 20 minutes that I will be replaying for the rest of my life. I let out a little “Woo!” and run over and hug Tami. “Was it everything you thought it would be?” She asks. “No,” I reply. “It was so much more.” I fly in private jets all the time, but I’ve never done anything like the aerobatics that I was a part of that day. It was the most amazing, crazy, surreal, over-the-top experience, and months later I can’t seem to shake the feeling I had up above those clouds. After reading about it and watching the videos on Youtube for years, I can finally say that I’ve done it and unless I get to go in space (call me, Sir Richard!), there is probably nothing that will ever top it. My bucket just received a major revision. Thank you, Breitling. For more information about the Breitling Jet Team and its North American Tour, visit Breitling-jet-team.com.

hat is paradise? Merriam-Webster’s offers three answers: One, “a very beautiful, pleasant, or peaceful place that seems to be perfect.” Two, “a place that is perfect for a particular activity or for a person who enjoys that activity.” And three, “a state of complete happiness.” Harbour Village Beach Club somehow manages to embody all three of these definitions. Located in the Dutch Caribbean on the tiny island nation of Bonaire — near Curacao, off the coast of Venezuela — Harbour Village sits on a pristine, four-acre, private peninsula within an exclusive beachfront enclave. Designed to perfectly embrace the surrounding splendor, Harbour Village radiates the type of supreme serenity that can only come from a place with just 38 intimate luxury suites. From vacationers to the few lucky residents docking their boats on the marina, everyone who stays at Harbour Village enjoys a level of blissful seclusion rarely seen outside of owning a private island. As for convenience, Harbour Village is just a few minute drive from Bonaire’s FBO and yacht owners should appreciate the fact that they can park their baby right at the resort. The suites at HVBC are spacious and well-appointed down to the last detail. Mine was located on the first floor and walked out to the picturesque white-sand beach, making it perfect for al fresco dinners on the terrace as the waves subtly crashed into the shore. What struck me the most during my stay was the overarching sense of seclusion. Most of the time I stepped out on the terrace, the beach was devoid of other vacationers; the only sound was the crashing of waves. During your stay you will slowly start to believe that this is really your own private island. Adding to the illusion, the service at HBVC is utterly first-rate across the board. The staff subtly makes it their duty to do everything possible to make your Caribbean experience unforgettable. From
newly-appointed chef Sebastiaan Vink (who boasts years of Michelinstarred restaurant experience), La Balandra boasts a delectable, newly-redesigned menu of creative dishes focused on “dock-to-table” ingredients plucked from the ocean that day. Each night you can savor the sunset as you dine over the water and then marvel at the schools of “dancing” fish illuminated by LED lights beneath your table. Bonaire is a truly secluded nation. It is a country with no stoplights and a population of just over 16,000 (or about 2,000 less than the flamingo population). And HVBC boasts the only private beach on this very private island. What’s more (and this is crucial to those who frequently visit the Caribbean), Bonaire is located outside of the Hurricane Zone, making it an ideal destination year-round. With its always perfect temperatures (high 70s/low 80s), exceptional service, astonishing beauty, and easy private plane and yacht access, Harbour Village might just redefine paradise. ISSUE 3 . 2016

“You can’t bring a shark into the studio, so I had to bring the studio to the sharks.” - Michael Muller

SWIMMING WITH SHARKS By ty fahlman
M
ost preeminent celebrity photographers like to stay firmly within their comfort zone: being chauffeured to lavish shoots at expensive studios or plush, catered locations surrounded by sycophantic assistants. But not Michael Muller. He is the type of artist who has never taken the easy route. How else could you explain how at the height of his power, after he had fought and clawed to establish (and reestablish) himself as one of the most gifted and respected photographers in the business — a man singlehandedly responsible for Hollywood’s most striking and memorable movie posters — Muller decided to embark across the globe on a series of death-defying dives to compile his stunning new Taschen book, Sharks: Face-to-Face With the Ocean’s Endangered Predator.
On a sunny spring afternoon, I am greeted by Muller at the door of his spacious Studio City home. With his convex fauxhawk and beard that would make King Leonidas proud, he looks every bit the part of a rock star photographer who Green Day once delayed Lollapalooza for because he was running late. Yet as I am led outside and past the pool where his young girls are swimming, I am reminded that today he is a family man. Inside his expansive home studio the walls are littered with movie posters and pictures of celebrities like Brad Pitt and Scarlett Johansson Muller has shot. It is a true artist’s den, and a million little creative artifacts abound, including a very realistic, miniature statue of Iron Man beside a massive computer monitor where the terrifying visage of a white shark awaits more fine-tuning.

The statue a reminder of Muller’s friendship with Robert Downey Jr., a man whom he has photographed countless times, and in person, Muller’s affectation is a bit like the surfer version of Downey’s. Thoughts flow with a mellow rapidity in a mesmerizing stream-ofconsciousness. Each idea dives abruptly into the next, only to possibly resurface later. There is an underlying sense that once he gets revved up, there is no stopping him. Soon he is off and reflecting on his unique childhood growing up in Saudi Arabia. “Photography was a hobby of his,” Muller says of his father, an engineer who when Muller was in the third grade, was tasked with the world’s largest construction project overseas. “He was always taking pictures, and so he got me my first camera: a waterproof Minolta Weathermatic.” “We lived right on the Persian Gulf, so there was a lot of snorkeling and diving,” Muller recalls.“I was in the water a lot, so one day I took a picture of a shark.” He showed the image to his friends who were ecstatic. “That’s when I really saw the power of a photograph,” he says. So when he started high school back in the States, Muller and a friend raised enough money to compile a snowboarding calendar. Soon — when he wasn’t competing against Lance Armstrong in triathlons (“I was fifth in the world and had like 15 sponsorships,” Muller tells me) — he was hustling record labels for press passes to shoot bands like the Rolling Stones when they came into town. Shortly after he graduated high school, he abandoned triathlons (which he didn’t see as a viable long-term career) and moved to LA and to pursue photography full-time. After one fruitless semester of

art school, Muller (who was self-taught and had no formal training) started shooting local models he had met through a friend. “I treated every one of those like it was the cover of Vogue,” he says. “I would get six different looks on six different blocks — I would make this one look like Paris, this one look like New York — and I was shooting every single day: two, three people a day.” Soon Muller found himself entrenched in the Young Hollywood scene of the early ‘90s. “We would go to Hermosa, and everyone was there; it was Leo [DiCaprio] and Drew [Barrymore], and I got to shoot them all.” Before he was old enough to drink, Muller had an agent and a reputation as one of the most coveted young photographers in town. Some of his images (like one of Juliette Lewis downing a carton of milk), became iconic. He was touring with rock stars and partying with A-listers. But it was too much, too fast, and Muller quickly found himself jaded and battling addiction. A dark period ensued. By the time he had cleaned up, all the agents who were in love with him in the Nineties were giving him the cold shoulder. This ignited a fire (“I am going to show you,” he recalls thinking), and Muller became a man possessed. He shot incessantly, whatever he could, just like in those early days. For the first time in his career, the former prodigy started implementing lights, thus revolutionizing his work. And “within a year or two, all those agents who blew me off started calling, like ‘let’s go to lunch,’” he says, laughing. “Every one of them!”

Takeoff // Profile “Since ‘92, a Taschen book was a dream of mine,” Muller says about the publisher renowned for their definitive compilations of artists’ works. For Muller, a Taschen book embodied the ultimate testament to his nearly thirty-year career. But he didn’t want to do just another monograph (“too predictable,” he tells me), so in thinking outside the box, he remembered the image that started it all. Muller had already shot colossal campaigns for Speedo over the better part of a decade, and in the process pioneered revolutionary new methods of underwater photography implementing massive lighting setups. He figured it was time to venture out of the pool…. “You can’t bring a shark into the studio, so I had to bring the studio to the sharks,” Muller says, smiling mischievously. And so began a two-year expedition across the globe (armed with a patented, seven-bulb, 1200-watt plexi-encased strobe lighting rig developed with NASA engineering) in search of the most incredible shark images ever captured by man (like the first-known photograph of great white breaching at night). But there was a greater purpose at
Fast-forward fourteen years and Muller is the man Marvel calls when they need to shoot the poster for the new Captain America, or Gucci picks when they need to hawk their latest fragrance campaign. He’s the guy Rihanna enlists to shoot her new album cover and be her personal tour photographer for three months, or Facebook brings in when they are acquiring Instagram and need someone to create a series of image filters that could rival Instagram’s in just a week’s time. (Facebook ended up scrapping Muller’s 100-plus filters when they bought Insta, so Muller decided to release his own successful app, MullerPhoto, which gives the editing power to user.) He had seemingly conquered it all...except for one thing.

hand. “I was off the coast of Guadalupe, hanging out of a cage staring into the eyes of a gargantuan great white,” Muller recalls. “And I felt this unmistakable connection to this creature. I realized that it wasn’t just some mindless killing machine. And I felt sad, because unless we do something, my daughters aren’t gong to be able to see these beautiful creatures in the wild.” Sharks’ 334 pages are crammed with vibrant images, each bursting with Muller’s unmistakable flair, and each as captivating as the ones featured in this issue of Jetset. Since its March release, the book has already become one of Taschen’s most successful titles ever. But moreover, Muller hopes that it helps paint the titular predators with a new brush, and that people who buy it gain a better understanding of the endangered species. (The images are accompanied by essays from Philippe Cousteau, Jr. and marine biologist Alison Kock, who discuss the dire need to preserve our “oceanic kingdom.”) “I’m proud to do my part to make some sort of a difference,” Muller says. Yet it is clear that through his legacy of remarkable pictures, he already has.

he romance of the Deep South is alive and well on Kiawah Island. Off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, sits this highlycoveted, ravishingly unspoiled travel destination made for the executive elite. Imagine picturesque streets lined with magnolia trees and pastel-painted houses with pillars and porches — perfect for languid afternoons spent lounging with a mint julep. An antidote to high-rise congestion, Kiawah Island is a low-rise haven to those seeking a hushed, coastal retreat with zero stress. Just 1.5 miles across at its widest point, this top-rated barrier island is home to seven high-ranked courses (two of which, Cassique and the River Course, are among GolfWeek’s “Best 100 Residential Golf Courses”), a Forbes five-Star hotel, endless dining options, and more activities than you can exhaust in a week.

The Ocean Course: This being Jetset, let’s get straight to the golf, as it is what attracts most people to this coastal paradise. The most famous course on Kiawah is the legendary Ocean Course. Voted the number three public golf course (and 20th overall) in the U.S by Golf Digest, the course has hosted a number of events, including one of the 2007 Senior PGA and the 2012 PGA Championships. Wind is a huge factor at this Pete Dyedesigned course, and the direction and strength of the wind can make up to an eight-club difference from one round to the next. Cassique Course: Now on to the lesser-known, private courses. Cassique opened in 2000 and is Tom Watson’s debut solo design in North America. A par-72 links-style course reminiscent of tracts found in Scotland and Ireland, Cassique’s classic seaside setting offers its members fashioned holes that could be played in numerous ways depending upon the conditions and the creativity of the golfer. Watson imbued Cassique’s front nine with a definitive Scottish flair in this South Carolina Low country. Holes 4 through 6 have the unique feature of being able to play two completely different ways using alternate teeing grounds and split fairways. The two setups are referred to as Pulpit and Nip Tuck. The 6th hole is certainly the most obvious nod to the UK architecture style. This 520-yard par-5 was modeled directly after the 14th hole at Carnoustie known as “The Spectacles.” The back nine layout is more closely associated with the area with low lying swampland, vast fairways, steep rolling mounds and deep
bunkers. The key to a great round is keeping your shots straight. Low handicappers will want to reach for their 3-wood on the tee box to find the short grass. And your putter will ensure a better chance of getting up and down off the greens. One also cannot overlook the impressive visuals with long vistas in every direction throughout your round. The facilities are also first class with a large clubhouse and impressive dining services that are a nice perk for the members.
The River Course Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1995, the private River Course is more traditional for the region and houses plenty of water and boasts some bite and splendid scenery. Portions of the track wind alongside the Kiawah River and through “clusters” of holes separated by large expanses of green space, while other junctures are near marsh savannas and oak-filled forests. The River Course provides a challenging and inspiring 7,039-yard test. Since opening, the course had garnered numerous accolades including Golf Digest’s “Top Five Private Courses in the Nation.” The stunning clubhouse is one to be treasured when arriving at the River Course. It was rebuilt after a fire a number of years ago, and after an extensive rebuild the place screams elegance and comfort. Most strikingly, the men’s locker room features a barrel-style ceiling, oyster shell walls, and full service bar, perfect for unwinding after your round. The River Course Clubhouse has always been, and will now even more become, the more relaxed, come-and-sit-awhile, have-a-drink-on-the-backporch, cozy nook for Island Club members.

I play occasionally, follow a few players like Jordan Spieth, and at least watch The Masters every year, but I don’t live and breathe the game like many of my colleagues. So while I was familiar with Mr. Player — I knew he JETSETMAG.COM
was the “Black Knight,” a former phenom who had won nine major championships and now in his eighties supposedly still does 1,300 sit-ups a day — when I drove to meet him at the Intercontinental on a picturesque afternoon in L.A., I really had no clue what to expect. I assumed we would talk golf. I assumed it would take effort on my part to get interesting answers out of him. I assumed wrong. What ensued was one of the most enlightening conversations I’ve ever had in my life. From the moment I shook his hand and was thrust into the middle of an impassioned discussion he was having regarding the morning’s bombings in Belgium, I knew he was a deeply intelligent man who cared very much about the state of the world. “We should be striving for peace, bettering the planet, but I am afraid we will have wars forever,” he says, the wisdom of his 80 years showing. Moments later he smiles and says, “I learned long ago that I will never have the money of Bill Gates, so I will have to be a talker, not a doer.” And boy, can he talk. Soon we are off on a wide array of topics, and Player continually posits probing questions (“In a leading country like the United States of America, why are there so many homeless?”). Everyone in the room is transfixed by this tireless octogenarian. (The fact that they are members of Team Player and should be accustomed to this by now, only makes it all the more impressive.) I soon learn that there is one thing above all that continues to drive Player. “I have traveled for 63 years, and if I can say one thing, it is that education is so important,” he tells me, “and there is nothing more important than educating others!”

You see, education saved Gary Player’s life. Growing up in extreme poverty in South Africa, his mother died of cancer when he was eight. When he was nine, his brother went to war. Player was grateful to have a good school to attend to give him hope amidst the despair. “Sometimes you lie in bed and you cry,” he recalls. “And you wonder if there is a life beyond what you know.” So as he gained success, he never forgot that feeling. The humility of his upbringing and his constant meetings with the less fortunate of the world have kept him grounded. “I get more of a sense of gratitude the older I get,” he tells me. He opens the door to the bedroom and shows me the sheets on the bed. “White sheets,” he says emphatically, looking deep in my eyes, “I never forget that there are people in this world who will live their entire lives without ever sleeping on clean white sheets!” Soon I learn the story behind his incredible fitness regimen. “Before my brother went to war he asked me what I wanted to do with my life,” Player says. “I was eight. And I told him I wanted to be a professional athlete. He laughed. ‘You’re too small’ he said. So we went out and got me a weight set. And I promised him that every day I would work on being as strong and healthy as possible.” When I ask him if he still does all those famed sit-ups, he says, “Yesterday in Japan I did 1,000 crunches, I ran the treadmill at max speed, 16 miles, and pushed 400 pounds with my legs.” Truly astonishing for a man JETSETMAG.COM
of any age. (Another confession: I don’t think I have performed 1,000 crunches once in my lifetime.) Perhaps for that reason, Player believes that it is imperative that we educate people on fitness. By his estimation, “about one out of every twenty thousand people exercises and eats properly in the world.” He recently went to Capitol Hill to speak on the subject and was told that due to budgetary cutbacks, any additional funding simply wasn’t in the cards. “It was rather frustrating,” he tells me, “I walked out of there with my tail between my legs.” But he refused to give up. “What an education I’ve had,” he tells me. “I have played golf with most of the presidents of America, met with the emirs of the Middle East, sat down with prime ministers, and the Royal Family. But I’ve also dined with the villagers in the huts of Africa, sat with the poor children on the streets of Mumbai. And I learned as much from them as I did from the higher echelon!” By all indications, Player is determined to spend the rest of his life traveling the world educating as many as he can while adding to his own erudition. “It’s been an incredible journey,” he says with a smile. And my guess is, it’s far from over. t’s easy to see why Nashville is called Music City — you can find performances in virtually any genre you can imagine here — and country enthusiats legendary honky tonks like the Bluebird Cafe and Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. This capital city also boasts an impressive collection of museums and cultural attractions to explore; and when you’re ready to sample the local cuisine, there’s everything from elegant French bistros to down-home barbecue joints. With so much to do, you just might have to grab a latte at the Frothy Monkey to keep your energy level high.

What is the Best Way to Fly Private? By DAYMOND JOHN
A
74
s someone who has been fortunate enough to fly private for almost two decades, I would like to think that I know a thing or two about the luxury of private air travel and how much easier and more care-free it can make your business trips and vacations. Between filming Shark Tank and my role as a Presidential Ambassador, between the dozens of businesses I manage and countless speaking engagements I have each year, I am flying constantly — and commercial air travel is simply not a viable option. What would take me a week flying commercial will take me two days in a private jet. (And now as Shark Tank gets more popular, I tend to get stopped more and more at commercial airports by people pitching their business ideas, which chews up a lot of my time!) JETSETMAG.COM
I will never forget the feeling of purchasing my first plane back in 1999. It was obviously a huge milestone in my life (as I am sure it was in yours, if you have been lucky enough to experience the same feeling). As a kid from Queens who started his business by selling hats on the streetcorner, owning a private jet was the ultimate status symbol. It was the kind of thing I had dreamed about but could never actually imagined happening. It was one last way to show the world that I had arrived. But after a few years, I started examining the costs of owning the jet and realizing that it was quietly bleeding me. Between housing the plane, fuel, pilots, crew, taxes, fees, and more, it was starting to become a huge burden. To me, it didn’t matter that I had a six billion dollar business — I certainly didn’t get to where I was by being foolish with my money (as my book, The Power of Broke, and last two Jetset columns can attest) — and dumb money was dumb money. So I started to wonder if there was a more viable option. As it turns out, there was… I did my research and found that the cost-per-mile when you own a plane is (on average) around $12, whereas if you charter, the cost is anywhere from $6 to $10 per mile. Furthermore, the annual

cost is on average about $800,000 for ownership versus $450,000 for chartering. Even if, like me, you charter 20, 30 times a year, you are still saving money. Almost as important, you are saving the hassle and headache associated with owning an aircraft. (I don’t care how rich you are, it still stings going on a two-week Caribbean vacation and have to spring for your entire crew to have one too!) So around 2002, I sold my plane and started chartering, and have never looked back. Now, of course there are still several pros to owning your own jet: You can decorate your plane however you chose, and every time you fly, you can leave your personal belongings on-board. You can throughly vet your pilots and crew, and control exactly who does (and does not) ride on your aircraft. And then there’s the big one — the one that, let’s face it, everyone really cares about. When you own your own jet, it’s your jet, and you can make sure everyone knows it (heck, you can even write your name across the side in big, bold letters like Donald Trump). There’s a special ring to saying, “Hey want to take my private jet to Vegas?” Like I said, it’s the ultimate status symbol. But if you’re like me and your bottom line is more important than impressing people — if you want to enjoy the ease of private travel without breaking the bank — then chartering (or maybe fractional ownership) is probably the best way to go. Today there are a number of charter companies that offer proven safety, reliability, and service — and most of them, like VolJet and JetSmarter, have their own apps that make chartering a private jet cross-country almost as easy as calling an Uber. JETSETMAG.COM
“If you’re like me and your bottom line is more important than impressing people — then chartering (or maybe fractional ownership) is probably the best way to go.” - Daymond John Personally, I have been using JetSmarter for a while now, and I could not be happier. When I have to go shoot Shark Tank, or speak at something like the Global Entrepreneur Summit, I just fire up the app or give them a call, and I have a G4 waiting for me in no time. It is honestly as easy as booking a commercial flight on Expedia, maybe even easier. Like a lot of these companies, they offer memberships that provide many useful benefits and discounts to people like me who fly constantly — including great rates on “empty legs” all over America. So while nothing can truly compare with the total control and “look at me” status that owning your own private jet provides — and if you have billions in the bank like my fellow shark Mark Cuban, more power to you — for me, the more sensible option is chartering. I save money, save headache, and still always arrive in style...and isn’t that all that really matters?

ntelligent citizens are difficult to govern. It’s just a fact. The more intelligent you are, the more likely you will know the issues and be aware when you are being fed a bunch of crap. Now ask yourself, how did education in America transform from a system that imparts knowledge to one that uses behavior modification techniques to influence the attitudes and beliefs of those passing through it? By systematically trying to create a nation that works instead of thinks, that’s how. Because the less educated they are, the easier the masses are to control. But how beneficial is that really for the progress of our country? ISSUE 3 . 2016

“Take away the calculator on their phone and the newest generation of workers cannot add or subtract.” You see, the aim of public education is not to spread enlightenment; it is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed a standard citizenry, to suppress dissent and originality. Public education does not encourage critical thinking nor does it foster imagination. It does not teach emotional intelligence. It does not encourage the pupils to work together to solve problems. It does not seek out and help nurture an individual’s innate skills and abilities. It just gives you tasks. As Albert Einstein said, “Never confuse education with intelligence.” In his book, The Dumbest Generation, Mark Bauerlein reveals how a whole generation of youth is being dumbed down by their aversion to reading anything of substance and their addiction to digital “crap” via social media. In American schools the culture exalts the athlete and the comely cheerleader. Conversely, overtly-

intelligent and intellectual students are commonly referred to as “nerds,” “dweebs,” “dorks,” and “geeks,” and are relentlessly harassed and even assaulted by the more popular “jocks” for openly displaying any intellect. Summarily, we are creating a world of dummies. Angry dummies, who feel they have the right, the authority, and the need not only to comment on everything, but to make sure their voice (however inane) is heard above the rest — and to drag down any opposing views through personal attacks, loud repetition, and confrontation. When you argue with an idiot, you have two idiots. Don’t agree with me? Then sit down with someone you know and watch an episode of Jeopardy. If neither of you knows the answer to anything other than the television or film questions, you’re in trouble. Now extrapolate that against an entire population of Americans who don’t know the answers either. Take away the calculator on their phone and the newest generation of workers cannot add or subtract. Take away “spell check” on their computers and they are helpless to spell accurately. These are basic skills Americans used to learn in one-room schoolhouses heated with a wood-burning oven. They could also tell you the branches of the US government and a whole lot more than today’s graduates. Why are they in the workforce? The truth is, America

needs workers that aren’t that smart. Ask anyone responsible for the management of an organization — from a local bakery to a major corporation — what their primary problem is and they will tell you it’s finding good workers with even the most basic education or skills to perform any job with a minimum of competency. This is the result of an education system that has been foisted on this nation and its been that way since Rockefeller and Carnegie pulled American farmers into their factories in the early 1900s. In 1902, John D. Rockefeller created the General Education Board at the ultimate cost of $129 million. The GEB provided major funding for schools across the nation and was very influential in shaping the current school system. As Rockefeller put it, “I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers.” Even more compelling are the words of Frederick T Gates, business advisor to Rockefeller: “We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into JETSETMAG.COM
philosophers or men of learning or of science. We are not to raise up among them authors, orators, poets, or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians….” It’s time for a reality check. We need to start properly educating the coming generations. Because the more educated you become, the better choices you have, period. I am certainly proof of that and I speak from personal experience. The choices I made after school were the ones that opened up my world to more possibilities. Regardless of what happens with education in this country, the intelligent will continue to survive. It is my belief that if we don’t do something, the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but rather those who cannot unlearn and relearn. So we need to reform our public school system, encourage the latest generation to put down the smartphone and pick up a book, and turn this nation of workers back into a nation of thinkers...before it’s too late. It’s difficult to get on board with a change after the fact, and even more challenging to consistently represent a brand and its values to a customer (or others outside the company) when you don’t know the reason or thought process behind them. That’s why it’s so important to engage from the inside of a company out. It not only gets employees on the same page and gives them the knowledge they need to go out and communicate a brand and its values to others, it establishes trust, which is essential in any organization.
Research shows there’s a direct correlation between trust and corporate performance. Employees that trust in a company and its leadership tend to stay with the company longer and perform at a higher level. Conversely, employees who don’t trust their employer or its leaders are usually disengaged. According to Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For,” “Companies ISSUE 3 . 2016
85
Altitude // Industry whose employees praise the high levels of trust in their workplace are, in fact, among the highest performers, beating the average annualized returns of the S&P 500 by a factor of three.” When a company is introducing new branding and informing employees first before informing dealers, customers, and the industry, it can go a long way toward strengthening employee trust. The first step in conveying any change is to ensure that all leadership is on the same page, so that they may communicate a consistent message to employees. Sending conflicting, varied messages to employees will do the opposite and reduce trust levels. Once leadership is unified and understands how the new branding is being communicated, it’s time to begin engaging employees. Employees are a company’s brand ambassadors. How well they understand and convey a brand’s message and values directly influences the success of that brand. When they trust in a company and are informed and engaged with its branding, vision, and business strategy, that trust and engagement are conveyed to customers and others in the industry. To engage employees with new branding, one must ask how that new branding connects to the different kinds of employees working at a company. Just as there are many customer personas, there are also many employee personas. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to employee engagement, a company may choose to explain new branding in focused workshops with employees who work in similar roles. Leadership and marketing/branding partners can lead these workshops and help make the connection between what an employee does and what the company’s branding means to their role. That will give them the information they need to more accurately convey the branding in their interactions with the external world. Internal marketing can also be used to engage employees with new branding. A microsite that’s accessible only to internal employees
can include information about the new branding — whether it’s relating the story behind a new logo, explaining why a particular tagline was chosen, communicating the company’s elevator speech, or showing a new advertising campaign. Another way to engage employees with new branding is through social media. A closed, invitation-only Facebook group can create internal two-way conversation about a company’s branding, advertising, strategy, and so on. Leadership can answer questions, respond to comments from employees, and post the latest information to keep them informed. In turn, employees will be energized and feel that they are a greater part of a company, its branding, and its future. Internal marketing aligns employees with the strategy and goals of a company (as well as any new branding). It’s only when employees understand these elements that they can work toward common goals and represent their company in a consistent way. Alignment means customers also have a more consistent experience. If you think about some of the businesses you frequent on a regular basis, you can probably pick out which ones do a good job of engaging their employees, and which ones do not. When you’re treated consistently — no matter what employee is helping you — chances are that company is doing a good job of aligning employees with its overall branding, strategy, and goals. With what companies invest in marketing and communicating their brand to customers, they should never overlook engaging their employees. Employees are the face and voice of a brand and play a critical role in successfully communicating it. Engaging from the inside of a company out means that employees have the knowledge they need to consistently represent a brand to customers — and, in addition, have greater levels of trust in their employer and its leadership. Win-win.
“Employees are the face and voice of a brand and play a critical role in successfully communicating it.”

Lessons from JFK on Fighting Terrorism By Robert Kiyosaki 88
JETSETMAG.COM
I
n 1960, my parents dragged the four of us kids to hear Dr. Tom Dooley. Known as The American Doctor, Dooley was working to save lives in Vietnam and Laos. He was young, handsome, and charismatic, much like Senator John Kennedy, a man who would soon to be our president. Dr. Dooley’s talk struck a chord that had many people crying as he described the cruelty of the Viet Cong in Vietnam and Laos. I was 13 years old that day, just becoming aware of the world outside of my tiny hometown of Hilo, Hawaii.
My mother, a registered nurse, wept as Dr. Dooley described the wounds and trauma he and his team faced on a daily basis. After his talk, most people in the room gave generously; it was their way of fighting the war on terror. Afterwards, we drove home in silence. I could tell my parents were deeply disturbed and deeply in thought. Mom turned to us and said, “I hope you boys won’t have to fight in that war.” Nevertheless, a few years later my younger brother and I were fighting terrorism in Thailand and Vietnam…. Today we are threatened by terrorism from groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS. Terrorism has invaded our cities here, not half a world away in some remote Asian jungle. On September 11, 2001, we were attacked and 2,996 people died. It was the deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States, with 343 and 71 killed, respectively; on April 15, 2013, two brothers set off pressure cookers during the Boston Marathon; on December 3, 2015 in San Bernardino, California, 14 people were killed and 22 wounded in terrorist attack…. Millions wonder how we will fight today’s “war on terror.” How do we fight an enemy who may be a co-worker, a fellow passenger, a sports fan, a concertgoer…or the person living next door to us? ISSUE 3 . 2016

Altitude // Global A Message from President John F. Kennedy: In the early Sixties, the world faced a different terror, the terror of nuclear war and possible annihilation of the human race. In schools we practiced hiding under our desks, in the event of a nuclear attack. How a desk was going to save us, I still do not know. Many families built fallout shelters; I remember going to fallout shelter parties and wondering where our family would hide, in the event of a nuclear attack. The words “Cold War” and “Nuclear Winter” were in thoughts and conversations daily. On January 20, 1961, President Kennedy’s inaugural speech carried words on fighting terrorism that are as relevant today as they were 55 years ago: “The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe — t he belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.”
In 1962, my mom and dad took sabbaticals from their jobs and joined President Kennedy’s Peace Corps. The cut in pay put a strain on our lifestyle, but those years were our family’s happiest. Rather than dig a hole in the ground and build a fallout shelter, mom and dad went to work against two of the common enemies of man:
poverty and disease. In 1966, at the age of 19, I sailed into Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam on board a U.S. Military Transport, delivering 500-, 750, and 1,000-pound bombs for the military build-up in Vietnam. In 1972, I was flying in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot. I went into the service against man’s common enemies: tyranny and war. How do we fight terrorism in 2016? Again, JFK’s inaugural address speaks to us today: “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”

In November of 2015, I was in Vietnam once again. I had time to visit the Củ Chi tunnels, just outside of Ho Chi Minh City (formally Saigon). It was my third trip back to Vietnam. I return periodically to make peace and seek answers to questions that may never be answered. Today, the Củ Chi tunnels are a tourist attraction. Rather than hide in tunnels from U.S. aircraft and bombs, tourists today pay to wander around the grounds, crawling in and out of the tunnels connecting underground rooms where the Viet Cong lived, fighting first the French and then the Americans. As I wandered around, I was reminded of how many times the enemy just seemed to…disappear. Now I know where they went. More importantly, I began to understand why a poor, third-world country beat the most powerful country in the world. They wanted to win more than we did. It was not easy looking at captured U.S. weapons. It was not easy watching their films in which they proudly described how they beat French and American terrorists. It was not easy hearing

Altitude // Global the Vietnam War called the American War. It was not easy crawling in and out of underground rooms in which the VC lived, cooked, and cared for their wounded. I felt for the U.S. troops, known as “tunnel rats,” who went into the tunnels with only a flash light and a pistol. My hosts were children of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese parents. One of the hosts, a young woman, said her parents fled South Vietnam and moved to North Vietnam, moving away from the unlawful American occupation of South Vietnam. Her parents did not want to live under a corrupt Ngo Dinh Diem government of South Vietnam. Diem’s government reportedly murdered and imprisoned hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese, in compliance, some believe, with the wishes of the U.S. government and the CIA. As I toured the Củ Chi tunnels, my guide’s words reminded me of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shia CIA puppet, who failed to unite the factions of Iraq. And what does Iraq have in common with Vietnam? That three-letter word: oil. Today the core of ISIS is made up of Sunnis, once members of the U.S.-trained Iraqi army. My other guide was a child of a Viet Cong doctor, fighting in the south. He said his father, a doctor in civilian life, left home in 1960 and did not return to his mother until 1975. His father was much like Dr. Tom Dooley, caring for the wounded and dying, in the underground hospitals of the Củ Chi tunnels. Both of my hosts were born after the “American War,” and held no animosity toward America or me. For them, the American War was over. I was still in Vietnam on November 13, 2015, when the terrorists struck Paris. It was interesting to be in Vietnam, knowing that, to the Vietnamese, the French, and the Americans were former terrorists of some kind. I return to Vietnam to teach, to make peace, and to seek answers to unanswered questions, questions such as, “Why were we fighting in Vietnam?” “Why were we fighting people who had not attacked the United States?”

Today I ask similar questions. Like: “Why did we attack Iraq when the 9/11 terrorist came from Saudi Arabia?” “Where are the weapons of mass destruction?” “Why did we kill Saddam Hussein and destabilize the entire Middle East?” “How will the world deal with millions of refugees seeking a better life in the free world? Once again, President Kennedy’s inaugural address offers a vision of the future: To our sister republics south of our border, we offer a special pledge — to convert our good words into good deeds — in a new alliance for progress — to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty. But this peaceful revolution of hope cannot become the prey of hostile powers. Let all our neighbors know that we shall join with them to oppose aggression or subversion anywhere in the Americas. And let every other power know that this Hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house.
Soon we will elect a new president. Let us pray that our new president, regardless of party, be a leader with the same heart, strength, and vision of John. F. Kennedy. Because JFK’s words are still true today: “In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger.” Of course everyone remembers: “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” And it’s a great line. But I especially like the one that follows: “My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man….” Robert Kiyosaki is an entrepreneur, educator, investor, author of the international bestseller Rich Dad Poor Dad and a global advocate for financial education.

t is how you use your time that determines the degree of meaning or fulfillment you have and the money you make. Your time is both your life and your money. Your so-called time management system can be judged by the service it provides, the fulfillment it brings, and the economic rewards it produces. But there is no such thing as true time management. You have the same exact amount of time as anyone else, 24 hours, in a day to work in. Getting more done is not about managing your time; it is about how you chose to focus your attention and intention during the time you have. When you focus on scheduling your day to do certain higher-priority actions, they are more likely to get done. In order to focus on your central bullseye of impacting long-term high priority actions, it is important to take command of your daily schedule. No one else is going to assure that you are living according to your true highest priorities.
“Your assertiveness, integrity (and at times tactful bluntness) will allow you to get your most important job done. - Dr. Demartini

Altitude // Inspire If you fill your day with high-priority actions that inspire you, your day won’t fill up with low-priority distractions that don’t. Since you can have more than one kind of high-priority action, it is wise to define them accordingly by further prioritizing your high priorities. High priority items or actions can fall under one or more of the following categories: Those needing to be strategically planned (working on the business) Those needing to be done in relation to yourself Those needing to be done in relation to your employees Those needing to be done in relation to your clients, customers..etc. Those needing to be done that are creative (new divisions, services, products, markets…) Those needing to be delegated outside your company (outsourced) Those needing to be delegated inside your company (insourced)
. . . . . . .
96
In order to fill your day with your highest priorities, it is essential to master the art of saying no to anything less important. Pause for a moment. Take a deep breath. Then practice responding to requests and offers with responses such as: “Thank you, but no thank you – I do appreciate your request/ offer though.” “Thank you for the offer, but at this/that time, my schedule is full and will not allow for your request.” “I appreciate your invitation, but at this/that time, I am not available.” “No thank you, that will not work for me. I have other plans at this/ that time.” “No thank you, that does not exactly inspire or appeal to me.” “Thank you for the opportunity, but I am going to pass at this time.” “I would first love to check my calendar, schedule, and itinerary, and then determine what truly is of highest priority and then possibly get back to you later.” “Thank you for the opportunity, but I love giving my all to my projects, and I have other very high-priority projects on my plate at present and so I could not give it my all.” JETSETMAG.COM
When you are unclear about what your true highest priority or business mission is, distractions can take you “off track,” and consume your time, attention, energy, focus, concentration, and productive capacity. All of this can become a tremendous distraction to you and prevent you from achieving what you truly would love. Knowing what your highest-priority business objectives are prevents you from being as easily distracted by every so-called “opportunity” that comes along. It allows you to be more discerning about the activities you choose to take on board, and those you discard. Clarity of mission gives you the ability to ignore distractions, and that can be both incredibly inspiring and empowering. It is wise to say “no” to your low-priority distractions and say “yes” to your highest-priority actions. You cannot please everyone so don’t waste your time trying. Continually saying “yes” because you can’t bear the short-term pain of saying “no” will cost you greater opportunities and lead you to bite off more than you can chew. Your time is finite. If you don’t make your life about what you would love to say “yes” to, it will keep becoming filled with what you probably intended to say “no” to.
“People are effective because they say ‘no,’ because they say, ‘this isn’t for me.’” - Peter Drucker
Block out all less-important distractions. Give them up. Embrace your trade-off. If your answer to whether to do something is not a clearly a definitive “yes,” then it is wise to make it a “no”. Say no gracefully and you will receive greater long-term respect. Ask yourself, “Is this truly essential?” If not, say no. Try eliminating, or scaling back some of your activities to determine if reducing or eliminating them makes any real difference in your results. This also helps you determine which actions are truly the most productive priorities. Deliberately eliminate (or at least reduce) your trivial, unimportant, unnecessary, and irrelevant actions. Your intentional limits can help you become more limitless. Give yourself permission to say “no” to low priorities, distractions, and outer noise and stop trying to do it all. Stop saying “yes” to

Gracefully, respectfully, and reasonably saying “no” may temporarily disappoint the opportunist, but eventually it will lead them to respecting and appreciating you even more. It shows that you are a professional more than just an amateur, and that you value yourself and your time more than their distractions. It is wiser to have a long-term gain in respect than a short-term bump in popularity. You cannot be popular with everyone all the time anyway. Sticking to your own higher priorities each day raises your selfworth, while others’ distractions can lower it. If you don’t fill your day with inspirations, it can fill up with desperations. Consider the benefits to yourself and others for telling them the truth and clear any burdening emotions. Take command of your time before others do and tell them the truth, or they may keep demanding more from or pestering you. Your assertiveness, integrity (and at times tactful bluntness) will allow you to get your most important job done. Your true friends or colleagues will respect your time and your priorities. If you don’t intensify your day with inspired actions, things can slow down. Your time times your intensity will determine your results. Many distractions that are being initiated by others are often opportunistic in nature. Many are simply others trying to sell you something — an idea, a viewpoint, an opinion, a friendship — in exchange for your valuable life and time. Simply being aware of what is being sold allows you to be more deliberate in deciding whether you want to buy or spend time on it. JETSETMAG.COM

America’s Favorite Actor Becomes Sully By ty fahlman PHOTOS BY Jesse Dittmar

om Hanks is an American icon. Like McDonald’s or the Yankees, he’s an integral part of our cultural DNA. After over three decades in the spotlight, he has become a beloved, avuncular staple in American popular culture: a celebrity whom everyone feels like they know, and most feel like they love. His presence on the screen is reassuring — he is the easily-identifiable voice of reason in almost every film he plays in — and we instantly buy even a more ludicrous plot in a movie like The Da Vinci Code quite simply because Tom Hanks is on the screen. We also love him because he just genuinely seems to be a good guy; even if you don’t agree with his politics, odds are you can’t help but personally like America’s Favorite Actor.
100
Hanks’ acting career is so prolific that it would be superfluous to recant it. His films have grossed over $8.5 billion worldwide, and I probably don’t need to remind you about how great Big, Saving Private Ryan, or Forrest Gump are; chances are those films already have a firm place in the hearts of you and your family. So let’s instead focus on the present. With his latest film, the Clint Eastwood-directed Sully (out September 9th), Hanks portrays “Miracle on the Hudson” hero Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, who famously saved the lives of 155 passengers of US Airways Flight 1549 back in January 2009. After the incredible rescue, Captain Sully became a fixture on talk shows and red carpets; his story was the kind of feel-good tale of heroism that rarely penetrates all of the glib sensationalism and tragedy in our news media. In interviews, Sully came across as an easily-likable, quintessentially-American everyman (not unlike Tom Hanks). Yet as with most of his films, Eastwood’s depiction dares to go beyond the surface in attempt to penetrate the soul of its protagonist — showing us more about the affable hero pilot we think we know in the process. (Anyone who’s seen Unforgiven knows that Eastwood likes to poke at the notion of what “heroism” is.) The film shockingly marks the first time that icons Hanks and Eastwood have worked together, and it continues Hanks’ recent trend of portraying real-life, everyday American heroes. On the surface, Sully is very similar to 2014’s Captain Phillips — another biopic about a seemingly-ordinary guy forced to rise to the challenge of a very extraordinary situation. But while that (terrific) film chose to focus solely on the incident which catapulted its hero to fame, Sully instead chooses to focus on the aftermath. “People saw the landing, but what followed is where the conflict is,” Eastwood says. “There was an investigation into his decision and it was painting a picture that he had done the wrong thing...what happened behind closed doors is what most people don’t know.” JETSETMAG.COM
ISSUE 32 . 2016

Altitude // Cover Feature Instead of Captain Phillips, the more apt analogy would be the Denzel Washington film Flight, as the miraculous landing is only the beginning in Sully. To prepare for his role, Hanks frequently spoke with the real-life Sully who helped him gain a better understanding of what it felt like to not only be in that cockpit on that fortuitous day, but to also find yourself labeled a hero overnight and the inherent pressures that brings. During production, Sully would visit the set and served as a consultant to make sure that all the details were right. As an actor, Hanks has always worked to get the details right. To portray a shipwreck victim in Cast Away, the two-time Oscar winner studied the psychology of people in similar situations and famously lost 50 pounds during the course of production (Hanks’ diet for the film was so extreme that, as he recently revealed, it may have caused his Type 2 diabetes). For Philadelphia, Hanks met with AIDS patients and completely transformed his appearance to become a man coping with dying from the disease. For Captain Phillips, Hanks not only also met with the man he’s playing, but also spent time on a similar ship to the one that was held hostage in the film, studying exactly how the captain and crew behaved. Hard work is what has helped Hanks transition himself from a goofy, lovable comedy star in the Eighties to one of the most respected dramatic actors on the planet in the Nineties. Growing up, Hanks studied theater, a medium which the self-described “spaz” used to channel his creativity. “Acting classes looked like the best place for a guy who liked to make a lot of noise and be rather flamboyant,” he once said. “I spent a lot of time going to plays…I’d just drive to a theater, buy myself a ticket, sit in the seat and read the program, and then get into the play completely.” Young Hanks spent years learning every aspect of theater production — including lighting, set design, and stage management — and that knowledge and work ethic would help propel him throughout his career. Hanks is so easily believable in his roles, that we probably fail to realize just how much effort he puts into becoming each character. But his costars see it. Aaron Eckhart (who plays copilot Jeffrey Skiles in Sully) says that Hanks “really embodied” and “obviously spent a lot of time with Sully.” According to Eckhart, “[Hanks] started holding himself straight like Sully did, and his economy of speech, and all of that sort of stuff that really nailed the precision of Captain Sullenberger. It was really impressive.” Even more impressive is that after he has endeared himself to the world, won every conceivable award (including some presidential praise at the Kennedy Center Honors), and cemented his place as one of the all-time greats, Tom Hanks is still not afraid to work tirelessly when it comes to nailing a character.
Hanks with Clint Eastwood on the set of Sully
102
After Sully, Hanks returns as Robert Langdon in October with Inferno — his third appreance as the Dan Brown character (following Da Vinci and Angels and Demons) — and he has already been putting in long voice sessions as the beloved Woody in Toy Story 4 (out 2018). And while Sully certainly feels like the kind of film sure to be up for several awards come Oscar season, if Hanks fails to get nominated (as he did with Captain Phillips), we get the feeling that he could really care less at this point. It seems like he just wants to be inspired...and make films that inspire others: “I’ll read anything that comes across the pipe,” he says, “but it’s got to be about something, at the end of the day.” JETSETMAG.COM

ver sensitive to the fluctuation of a volatile market and hindered by a shortage of approved financial vehicles, Chinese investors have driven the art market to exceptional highs. Now the affluent are taking a second look at jade, the rare green gem of translucent beauty, and driving prices sky high. As a result, American investors looking for a place to park funds are well advised to follow the lead of their Chinese Counterparts and look into investing in this lucrative green commodity for the long term. Two years ago, Sotheby’s estimated a jade necklace with a Cartier emerald and diamond clasp at $12.8 M. When the necklace of twenty-seven graduated jade pearls went on the podium, it inspired heated bidding that drove the final price up to $27.7M, making it the most expensive jade item in the world. It is no wonder that Chinese investors have reaffirmed that one of their best investments is also one of their oldest and most cherished natural resources.

Although there are no set standards for jade similar to the HUI or XAU gold index — and nothing akin to Tavernier’s law that is used to determine the price of a diamond — jade has been a soughtafter commodity since Neolithic times (6,000-5,000 B.C). Over the years, its hardness made it a desirable medium for weaponry, and later its rarity gave it legs as currency. Too hard to carve, it was abraded in the earliest times with bamboo, bone, and stone tools — a time consuming process that made decorative objects and jewelry affordable only by the wealthy. During the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), the wearing of jade was restricted to emperors and highly-placed ministers. Later when America’s great collectors discovered the stone’s allure, they were seduced. In 1902, Herber Reginald Bishop endowed the Metropolitan Museum with a collection of jade so extensive that the museum
But people rarely amass collections like that anymore. Most western investors (detached from the Chinese symbolism that is integral to jade’s history), are more likely to take an eclectic approach to collecting, focusing more on individual items like the Sotheby’s necklace. Barbara Hutton, the “poor little rich girl” of Woolworth fame, was given the twenty-inch long necklace by her father to celebrate her marriage to Prince Alexis Mdivani. Unlike the signed jewels of western makers, China’s jade artisans were anonymous, held in service to the royal courts. Consequently, the gemologists of the Hutton-Mdivani necklace are unknown. The size of the jadeite pearls, some measuring nearly an inch, and the consistency of their color, a telling indicator of quality, suggest it was an 18th century tribute to the Qing imperial court. The necklace ended up in Europe during the political instability of the late

dedicated an entire room to it. In 2015 Christie’s held a famous weeklong sale of the collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth. A rare, large, bluish olive-green jade dagger/axe from the Late Shang dynasty (11th century B.C.) reached $233,000. Its pre-sale estimate topped off at $150,000.

19th century. It was insured by Cartier in Paris for $55,000 in 1933. That same year the house fashioned the art deco clasp. The HuttonMdivana necklace now resides in the Cartier corporate collection as its value ascends. For those wanting to purchase jade as an investment, I suggest doing so through selective auction houses. The finest jade carvings — whether jewels, pebbles kept in your pocket as touch stones, carved boulders designed to help scholars focus, or reticulated decorative items that reflect Chinese affinity for symbolism — are of the Qing Dynasty. If you have doubts of authenticity, certificates of gem identification and GIA authentication provide a level of comfort. And if you shop retail jewelers who beguile you with jade offerings both antique and modern, be aware that there are two different minerals commonly referred to as “jade.” The stone traditionally prized as jade in China is nephrite, a translucent stone that ranges in color from white to green, grey, and black, and has been mined throughout China since ancient times. Conversely you have jadeite, which is usually a deep emerald green comes from Myanmar (formerly Burma). Now the Chinese consider both of these minerals “jade” and both are highly regarded; but ultimately, it is the color, cut, and craftsmanship that gives jade its value.

Buyer’s Guide // Health
O
n the morning of September 11th, as the twin towers were under attack, I was being rushed into emergency intestinal surgery on a late-stage tumor that was doubling in size every day. Before my diagnosis, I was pretty much a typical Jetset reader — I ran a successful business, worked long hours, and traveled constantly to meetings, corporate functions, galas, and speaking engagements. I was firmly of the belief that if an obstacle presented itself, there was always a solution. Then suddenly I was wondering what my two young children would do without their mother. The feelings of uncertainty and futility were almost unbearable, but my faith in God gave me the strength and guidance to pull through. I had been told that my colon cancer was basically “incurable,” and I had a very slim chance of surviving. “Get your affairs in order,” they told me. Refusing to give up, my husband and I scheduled meetings with many of the preeminent doctors and clinics in the country. We assumed that our wealth meant that I would have access to special care, but those “top” doctors from Mayo Clinic and Sloan Kettering all pretty much offered the exact same thing: the same mandated prescription of chemotherapy and radiation. I felt defeated. Could this really be the best modern medicine had to offer? So in my desperation to survive, I searched for a treatment center that used a different, more personalized approach — one that crafted a treatment plan that was unique to my specific cancer — and I found just that in Scottsdale, Arizona with Envita Medical Center. Envita stood out because they offered me an extensive array of unique, targeted cancer treatments, including conventional and advanced natural medicine from around the world. To me they were offering light amidst the darkness.
“And the results were nothing short of miraculous. I felt better almost immediately, and in a matter of months, I was virtually cancer-free.”
Soon I was in complete remission, and today I feel even better than I did before I was diagnosed in my late thirties. I’m back to traveling constantly, but now I have made it my mission to teach people that, with access to the right care, terminal illnesses don’t have to be terminal. Today Envita has grown way beyond the tiny clinic I visited all those years ago, and their treatments, staff, and technology have developed exponentially. I have proudly referred countless patients over the years who have experienced similar results themselves. When it comes to treatment, no guarantees are made and individual results will vary, but to learn more about how Envita is helping people like Sandy beat complex and late-stage cancer, fibromyalgia, lyme disease, and various other chronic diseases every day, visit Envita.com or contact their exclusive Jetset concierge at 1-866-830-4576 to speak with a patient care coordinator today.

hile Nashville’s deep-rooted Southern charm remains as pronounced as ever, it’s no secret that Music City is undergoing the kind of renaissance that few cities across the United States have been fortunate enough to experience. As a result, the buzz surrounding Tennessee’s capital has been off the charts in recent years. A combination of the city’s steady job growth, its reputation as an entrepreneurial haven and its massive influx of development — more than $2 billion in new projects alone — has led none other than The New York Times to call Nashville an “it” city. In addition, Nashville’s convenient geographic location, quality workforce, and lower tax rates further add to its appeal as a great place to do business. And thanks to the city’s thriving music scene, nightlife, and wide variety of cultural attractions, there’s always plenty to do when the business day is done. In fact, the readers of Travel + Leisure named Nashville the “Destination of the Year,” selecting it over some very well-known international hotspots. One of the reasons they chose Nashville for this honor is the food; the diversity of the city’s cuisine has earned Nashville a well-deserved place as a culinary capital of the new American South. Naturally, increased interest in the area also is reshaping Nashville’s residential landscape. “With all of the publicity and attention Nashville is receiving, we are now one of the top cities for relocation,” says Marisa Morgan, Affiliate Broker of The Lipman Group Sotheby’s International Realty. “Our economy is consistently strong

due to its diversity, low costs of living and doing business, thriving creative culture and our well-educated population.” Trending neighborhoods throughout Nashville speak to the myriad lifestyle options available in the city, ranging from contemporary penthouse condominiums offering spectacular views of downtown Nashville, to spacious estates with authentic Southern charm. ou’ve worked hard for your family and sought to create memory-making holidays. Fortunately, those golden moments don’t have to be relegated to an annual event. So much more is possible because you’ve just found Dercum’s Dash at Keystone in the captivating Rocky Mountains. You choosing Keystone Resort as a place for your family’s adventures to begin is akin to Walt Disney knowing where to invest in his Disneyland. Consistently ranked one of the best ski destinations for families, Keystone boasts 3,148 skiable acres and the largest night skiing operation under the celestial Colorado sky. The three mountains of Keystone offer beginner to expert slopes and one of America’s best terrain parks. Year round adventures abound for those who enjoy fly fishing, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. All this is conveniently close to the Denver International and Eagle airports — yet largely a secret from the world (unlike the inundated resorts nearby). Carved into the mountainside, and surrounded by national forest, a community of luxury homes has been planned for those with discriminating taste. Nestled out of sight, the homes here have direct access to the slopes and River Run village. This enclave of enviable residences is Dercum’s Dash, named for Keystone founder Max Dercum. JETSETMAG.COM
Max created a legacy on which you can now build your own. He knew the value of creating something extraordinary for the delight of future generations. Bringing a respected reputation for fine craftsmanship, Crestwood Homes offers 24 exclusive residences in Dercum’s Dash. The generous-sized rooms and open floor plans are the perfect backdrop for family gatherings. Final Descent // Events
In a one-of-a-kind annual event held each August, 200 of the most prized collector cars roll onto what is often called the best finishing hole in golf: the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Tire meets turf and transformation occurs as the stage is set for one of the most competitive events in the automotive world. But the Concours is not a contest of speed, but rather (as its name would imply), one of elegance. Automobiles and motorcycles are judged for their historical accuracy, their technical merit, and their style — and the best garner coveted reward and recognition. This year, among the many Bizzarini automobiles featured will be the very first car made by Giotto Bizzarini back when he was a mechanical engineering student at the University of Pisa. Nicknamed “The Machinetta” in 1953, it ultimately provided the foundation for the start of a brilliant career. Additionally, the owners of every major race-winning Ford GT40 have agreed to display their cars on this scenic and famous swath of green. Some of the racing greats who drove these cars to victory will also be on hand; Chris Amon, Dan Gurney, Jacky Ickx, David Hobbs, Brian Redman, and Sir Jackie Stewart are all hoping to attend. The Concours d’Elegance will also showcase the artist whose lifelong dream in bringing Ford GT40s to life will be realized. In 1965, as a young designer fresh out of the Art Center College of Design, Ken

Eberts went to work for Ford Motor Company, helping to design cars like the Econoline, Falcon, and Galaxy. But it was the GT40 that Eberts dreamed of styling. Unfortunately that dream was unfulfilled, and in 1968 Ken left Ford to focus on fine art, eventually founding the prestigious Automotive Fine Arts Society. But nearly five decades later, he has been asked by Edsel Ford and commissioned by Concours to create the main event poster for the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This poster features the iconic Ford GT40s that finished first/ second/third at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, breaking a six-year winning streak by Ferrari and recording the first win by an American constructor. “While I didn’t actually work on the design of that American icon at Ford, I am honored to be doing this painting of the three Le Mans winning GT40s now,” says Eberts, who has produced approximately 1300 automotive fine art paintings in his lifetime. Only the most beautiful and historic cars are invited to appear on the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links and connoisseurs of art and style gather to admire these masterpieces. Charitable donations raised by Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance now total over $21 million, and, as always, the event is shaping up to be an an absolutely unforgettable experience for admirers of both collector cars and automotive history.
