W

e at Jetset have always prided ourselves in highlighting the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. Sir. Richard Branson, Mark Cuban, Elon Musk, and our current president are just a few of the iconic business legends that have graced our cover over the years, and we are proud to have brilliant business minds like Daymond John and Robert Kiyosaki write exclusive columns for us each issue. So with that in mind (and as an entrepreneur myself), I am proud to present to you our first-ever Entrepreneur Issue devoted to honoring successful entrepreneurs and sharing the kind of wisdom that, frankly, you can’t find anywhere else. Subtitled “Entrepreneurs Who Are Changing the World,” we have a tremendous, multi-page feature highlighting some of the most innovative and impactful names in business — people like Snapchat’s Evan Spiegel and EMM Group’s Mark Birnbaum. That is followed by page after page of invaluable advice from all of our esteemed executive contributors on everything from how to market your business to how to cultivate a successful workplace environment to how to self-publish a book. I mean, where else can you have Daymond John teach you how to launch a successful brand? If there is a second theme to this issue, it is powerful women. We have insightful interviews from two of the strongest and most talented actresses out there, Evan Rachel Wood and Charlize Theron. As for the former, we talk to the Emmynominated Westworld actress about the hit show and her new band, and for our cover story, we go deep inside just how in her latest movie, Atomic Blonde, Theron kicks more butt than any male action star out there. Elsewhere, we have profiles of two inspiring female entrepreneurs making a profound impact on the world — Jennifer Esposito and Noëlla Coursaris Musunka — as well as some truly great articles from our insightful female contributors like Si Si Penaloza, McKenna Leiva, and Bettina Bathe. And of course, being Jetset, we also have a fantastic selection of luxury goods, destinations, and real estate to bring you. We show you some of the most impressive new watches and jewelry pieces hitting stores; tour the greatest resort golf courses in North America; and tell you where to eat, stay, and dine in one of our favorite cities, Seattle. And that’s just scratching the surface. In summation, while I am proud of every issue of Jetset, this is truly a special one. It is my great honor to share it with you. Enjoy! Sincerely,

Darrin Austin

TRENDING WINE: ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

The late Robert Mondavi is regarded as the Godfather of California wine, and his eponymous winery is one of the most well-known in the world. Just released to celebrate Mondavi’s 50th anniversary in the business, this 2013 Cab is a crowning achievement for the brand. Full-bodied, polished, and rich with tremendous purity, it is a bottle Mondavi himself would surely be proud of.

TRENDING COLLABORATION:

Louis Vuitton & Jeff Koons, “Masters” Two of the biggest names in fashion and art came together for this epic collaboration celebrating the greatest masters in art history. Works from iconic names like Leonardo Da Vinci, Titian, and Van Gogh are reimagined in the pieces of the hottest LV collection in years. Inspired by Koons’ noteworthy “Gazing Ball” series of paintings from 2015 (which reimagined beloved masterworks like Mona Lisa and The Kiss), the 51-piece Masters collection is only available in select stores and at exclussive pop-ups. It features everything from bags and wallets to scarves, laptop sleeves, and key chains. Koons says he intends for the collection to help “erase the hierarchy attached to fine art and old masters,” but whether people view them as homages or misappropriations, their striking sartorial appeal is undeniable.

TRENDING LUGGAGE:

The Samsara Smart Suitcase A Kickstarter campaign launched this innovative piece of luggage, and it famously raised five times its original funding goal in record time. With a price tag of under $690, the Samsara Smart Suitcase will set you back about the same as a piece from the biggest name in the all-aluminum suitcase arena, Rimowa, but offers so much more in terms of included tech. Brilliant design and features like USB ports, and an integrated app, and a removable power bank that can power a mobile device up to 10 times makes this possibly the most efficient piece of luggage ever designed.

TRENDING TIMEPIECE:

Bell & Ross - BR03-94 AeroGT Orange Skeleton Inspired by the AeroGT concept supercar, this bold piece from renowned French luxury watchmaker Bell & Ross is guaranteed to leave an impression. With a 42mm x 42mm square case brightly accented in orange (with sharp, angular bridges reminiscent of the engine chassis of the AeroGT), the head-turning BR03-94 AeroGT Orange Skeleton proudly showcases its gorgeous

skeletonized chronograph movement front and center. Aggressive, sleek, and unmistakable: the watch is the perfect homage to the car it was inspired by. Limited to only 500 pieces, this head turner is a perfectly unique addition to any watch collection. For more incredible original timepieces (including another from Bell & Ross), turn to Page 30 for our exclusive watch and jewelry roundup. ISSUE 3 . 2017

Takeoff // What’s New TRENDING WHISKEY:

Royal Salute 30-Year-Old The Flask Edition Royal Salute was originally created to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and their latest release is nothing less than regal. The 30 Year Old The Flask Edition is an exquisite, robust whiskey that comes with not only a gorgeous decanter but also (as the name might imply), a custom-made porcelain flask complete with a funnel and wooden serving tray. Want one? Act quickly, as The Flask Edition was first exclusively released in China and sold out immediately.

TRENDING AIRCRAFT:

Eviation Alice Commuter This revolutionary all-electric aircraft from Eviation was just unveiled at the Paris Air Show where it made headlines across the aviation world as the potential “Tesla of the Sky.” The Alice seats up to nine passengers, has a cruise speed of 240 knots, and uses lithium-aluminum fusion technology to allow for a 600mile range off of a single charge. This makes it the perfect plane for quick jaunts like LA to Vegas when it takes to the skies in (hopefully) 2021.

Takeoff // What’s New TRENDING ARTWORK:

Andy Warhol, “Self Portrait” Nothing perfectly embodies the sensibilities of history’s preeminent pop art master than this turquoise work. The piece — Warhol’s first-ever self-portrait — sold for $7.7 million on June 28 at a Sotheby’s auction in London. Aptly titled Self Portrait, it was taken in a dime store photo-booth in 1963 or 1964. Decades before selfies became ubiquitous, the man who once said, “in the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes” made this prophetic, quintessentially Warholian piece.

TRENDING HOTEL:

Belmond Hotel Caruso, Amalfi Coast A former 11th-Century palace set on cliffs high above the Mediterranean, the Belmond Hotel Caruso is one of the finest luxury hotels in Italy, if not all of Europe. The Amalfi Coast is one of the premier luxury destinations in the world, and this hotel allows you to savor it all (you are just a short boat ride from sights like Positano or Pompeii). With its carefully preserved fresco-covered ceilings, terraced gardens, and stunning infinity pool overlooking the picturesque waters below, this is without question an idyllic place to stay this summer.

TRENDING RESTAURANT:

Beauty & Essex LA

It began in New York’s Lower East Side, a complete one-ofa-kind restaurant concept hidden behind a front of a pawn shop on Essex Street. Then it expanded to Las Vegas, with an equally lively and exciting location at The Cosmopolitan. And now, Chef Chris Santos has broken ground on a Hollywood location that might just be the best one yet. Beauty & Essex LA occupies over 10,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor seating (a first for the brand) and serves all of Santos’ signature dishes, including the absolute must-try grilled cheese and tomato soup dumplings.

TRENDING SERVICE:

Taste of Blue

In our last issue, we wrote about the world of luxury concierge services and interviewed one of the preeminent names in the industry, The Bluefish founder Steve Sims. For over two decades, Sims’ team has built an advanced network of relationships with the finest travel, leisure, and entertainment organizations on earth. And while The Bluefish is famous for opening doors across the globe for its members, it’s also notoriously exclusive, only accepting about one tenth of yearly applicants. That’s where Taste of Blue comes in. This innovative new service offers Bluefish hallmarks like exclusive access to events, luxury travel perks, and business service discounts, all for a low annual membership fee of just $295. Think of it as Bluefish Lite: all the same access for a fraction of the cost and minus the selective application process. And the best part? It’s all easily accessible via an innovative new app for your iPhone. “The idea with Taste of Blue was to provide the world with the same elite access that our members have been enjoying for years,” Sims says. “We know that some people can’t afford or don’t require all the amenities of a personal concierge, but we still want them to be able to taste the Bluefish experience, hence the name.” Taste of Blue gives you your own private concierge in your pocket, on call 24/7. TRAIN SUITE SHIKI-SHIMA

J 26

BY TOM ZENNER

etset travelers that have only viewed the exciting and vibrant country of Japan as they are landing in Tokyo and then shuffling from one meeting to the next have been missing out. Thankfully, they now have a new way to actually get to know this exotic land a little more intimately — and in five-star fashion, with amenities, dining, service, and accommodations that match a worldclass luxury hotel or cruise line. Train Suite Shiki-shima is a 10-car train operated by East Japan Railway that only has 34 passengers on board at a given time. There are so many amazing features to partake in and enjoy, including a dining car with a menu devised by a Michelin-starred chef that resembles a top restaurant in New York, Paris, or Tokyo. JETSETMAG.COM

Every detail onboard has been meticulously designed and refined to be best in class. Even the champagne-gold color of the train is stunning, and the vessel drips opulence and style from beginning to end. The service is impeccable and includes limousine transport, and your luggage picked up at your home and delivered directly to your personal cabin on board so you don’t have to bother with it. On each end of the train are glass-enclosed observation cars, allowing you to enjoy the sweeping Orient landscape and countryside. Itineraries range from two to four-day trips. And if your travels in the near future include Eastern Japan, you might want to book a suite quickly because they are filling up fast.

THE BELL FCX-001 HELICOPTER By tom zenner

f

or helicopter aficionados and those working in the aeronautic industry, the news of production of new lines of choppers dramatically evolved in the areas of efficiency and safety should come as no surprise. But those of us who want to, need to, and enjoy traveling in them, are going to be excited about how cool, sleek, and sexy some of these latest designs are. One in particular that has caught our eye is heads and (no) tails above others that will soon be churning off assembly lines is the Bell FCX001, which, as you’ll notice in the photos, has a rotor-less tail boom. The FCX-001 looks like something tailor made for James Bond, as much a part of his ensemble as one of the Tom Ford two-piecers

28

JETSETMAG.COM

Daniel Craig seems to fancy. Just a few of its ultra-cool and unique design elements: Morphing rotor blades, safer and more advanced landing gear, and a virtual cockpit that seats just one pilot, allowing the captain of this modern airship to essentially fly this aircraft in tandem with the computer (another modern evolution indicative of the helicopters this sophisticated Bell model is on the forefront of). The FCX-001 is going to literally remove the dashboard for the pilot, but the view is going to improve drastically for passengers, as it has plenty of windows for them to enjoy the views for every moment of this stealth, stylish, yet ultra-safe ride. Consider us ready for takeoff.

NEMACOLIN WOODLANDS RESORT

Mystic Rock

Changing up the scenery and vibe, we head to the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Whether wanting to embark on a more rugged luxury or maintain a high-end French-inspired feel, Nemacolin offers it all. The resort provides guests with five different lodging options amongst its vast, expansive property. These options include the Chateau Lafayette, Falling Rock, The Lodge, personal townhomes, and luxury vacation homes. Each accommodation brings an extraordinarily different atmosphere to the resort experience, leaving guests to discover their own ideal resort getaway. Regardless of which lodging location you select, you will have access to countless outdoor activities including its two immaculate Pete Dye golf courses. The courses at Nemacolin remind me of what Pete Dye once said: “Life is not fair, so why should I make a course that is fair.” These courses provide quite the challenge to any golfer’s game. Dye’s own Mystic Rock course is a Par 72 with a slope rating of 149 from the championship tees, which is one of the highest ratings in the country. It has received numerous accolades such as “Number One Best Golf Course in Pennsylvania” and “Top-40 Best Resort Course” by Golf

Digest and Golf Week, respectively. This Pete Dye course sits on acres of scenic highlands where the tree lines test the golfer’s abilities off the tee while looming mounds and ridged landscapes surrounding the greens test the golfer’s approach shots. Nemacolin recently expanded its golf experience with the inclusion of a second Dye course, Shepherd’s Rock. This highlyanticipated, 7,151-yard, Par 72 course opened July 1st, and already has the media buzzing with Forbes placing it on its list of “The Nine Most Eagerly Awaited New Golf Courses of 2017,” and Golf Vacation Magazine labeling it as one of the “Top Pete Dye Designs to Play in 2017.” Sitting on top of the Pennsylvania Allegheny Mountains, this course will offer challenges like Mystic Rock but with new breathtaking mountainous views that are sure to “wow” its guests. Similar to Boulders, Nemacolin enhances its golf experiences by offering packages such as the “Stay and Play,” “The Double Dose of Dye,” and even an unlimited golf package which allows guests to customize exactly what they want from their experience. The resort also offers guests access to the wonderful Nemacolin Golf Academy with one of GOLFs “Top-100 PGA teaching professionals,” Eric Johnson, and access to extravagant locker rooms featuring billiards, televised seating areas, bars, and much more. INNISBROOK GOLF & SPA RESORT

Island Course - Hole 2

40

JETSETMAG.COM

Heading to The Sunshine State, we travel to the famous Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort located in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. This resort is known for its championship golf courses and is even home to the PGA’s very own Valspar Championship, which it has hosted for most of the last 25 years. With 72 holes of lavish golf, golfers should be prepared for all types of challenges. Beginning with the Cooperhead Course, a 7,340-yard, Par-72 Lawrence “Larry” Packard design, even the greatest of PGA professionals are challenged by its length and tightness. And its recent six-month renovation has the course in the most prestigious shape its been in to date. With the extensive re-grassing of all fairways and roughs, rebuilding each green, and reshaping the bunkers, golfers have no excuses for bad shots. Renovations also included all new tee boxes, some of which were expanded upon from the original designs and some which were moved forward to create a whole new level of difficulty for players of all levels. Cooperhead allows golfers to directly compare their games to some of the PGA’s best —names like Jordan Spieth, Adam Hadwin, and Charles Schwartzel — while taking on the notorious finishing holes known as “Snake Pit”...I think you can guess how it got its nickname. The other three Lawrence “Larry” Packard-designed courses bring the same level of difficulty. The Island Course, a 7,310 yard,

Cooperhead Course

Par-72, is surrounded by Lake Innisbrook and water daunts six of the eighteen holes, leaving the golfer no choice but to rely on their accuracy. The North Course, a 6,325-yard, Par-72, is the most similar in terms of terrain to the Cooperhead Course, yet provides new tests with its extremely difficult par threes and its length added during the new renovations. The last of the four courses differentiates itself greatly from the others. The South Course is a 6,442-yard, Par-71, links-style course, challenging one’s game with its rolling hills and strong breezes from the Gulf of Mexico. The uniqueness and the distinct challenges presented by each course gives guests complete fulfillment to their overall golf experience while allowing you to play like a champion. Named by Golf Digest as one of the “Top-75 Golf Resorts in America” and by GOLF as a “Top- 100 You Can Play,” this resort is a golfer’s dream. When stepping away from the championship golf, the resort offers a number of other amenities and actives to round out the

Innisbrook Executive Suite

full resort golf experience. Be sure to visit the new Salamander Spa for a Golfer’s Muscle Melter Massage after your celebratory rounds to restore the body and mind with the sole purpose of recovery. In regards to lodging, Innisbrook is a Salamander Hotel & Resort property that offers 550 spacious guest suites and rooms and focuses on a “back-to-nature movement” in which they help guests feel at one with the pristine nature that surrounds them. On property, the resort offers three different restaurants and two bars in which they have recently appointed Thomas McKinney-Stehr as the new Executive Chef. McKinney-Stehr, a well-known name amongst the Tampa Bay region, has over 30 years of expertise in hospitality and serves up a taste of European influences mixed with a Floridan flare. One can also tap into their athletic side again by visiting one of the 11 tennis courts, the state-of-the-art fitness center, one of six heated swimming pool complexes, or go hiking at the on-site nature preserve. Without a doubt, this sprawling, 900-acre resort is nothing short of spectacular. InnisbrookGolfResort.com

LAPLAYA BEACH & GOLF RESORT Staying in The Sunshine State, we head down the coast to the gorgeous LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort found on the beachfront of Naples, Florida. To start, the resort is home to the second oldest golf course in North Naples. The 18-hole, Par-72, Robert Cupp-designed course was first established in 1958 as the Palm River Golf Club but was officially taken over by the LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort in 2001. The new management refurbished some of the course’s older features and created a private tropical oasis that without a doubt challenges one’s game. With 14 of the 18 holes featuring water hazards and over 3,000 palm trees lurking around the fairways, this course is all about placement and challenging the golfer’s accuracy. Maintaining the Old World Florida feel, guests are greeted before and after by the elegant clubhouse that features a wraparound veranda, a grill room, a golf shop, and full practice facility enabling golfers all they need before and after a round. Guest may also find themselves sneaking away to the SpaTerre, a massive, 4,500-square-foot spa focusing on elegance and a soothing decor, or to the famous BALEEN restaurant located on the resort’s very own private beach. The latter, recently named by Gulfshore Life magazine as the “#1 Best Restaurant for Waterfront Dining,” is known for its unique and incredible Floribbean coastal cuisine that is only enhanced by the nightly Gulf of Mexico sunset views. Nicklaus then challenges golfers’ short games as they head over to the Punta Mita Bahia Golf Course. Off the course, guests are welcomed by 139 casita-style guest rooms and 38 sumptuous suites that create a modern take on the Mexican culture. illionaire Paul Allen knows a sound investment when he sees one. The Microsoft co-founder’s active investing in Seattle’s real estate should be a clear indicator of how desirable the city is. Because of its rich culture, thriving tech scene, and incredible dining and entertainment, we can see why Seattle has become the single hottest real estate market in the country (see Page 128). So from chic hotel hotspots and incredible culinary experiences to tremendous museums and championship golf just an hour or two away, enjoy our guide to making the most of your next trip to one of America’s greatest cities.

STAY: W Seattle The recent beneficiary of a highly anticipated $18 million renovation, W Seattle is intrinsically connected to the city’s thriving empires of tech, music, and design. All 415 guest rooms and nine stylish suites have been transformed, finalizing the multi-phase renovation that included the hotel’s signature Living Room and Trace restaurant. In a nod to the city’s reputation as a defining music capital, the hotel is now home to the first W Sound Suite in North America. The smashing space functions as a private music studio for professional recording artists, studio musicians, and all hotel guests who wish to record in style while on the road. The Sound Suite is the brainchild of W Hotels North American Music Director Paul Blair, professionally known as DJ White Shadow, and best known for his collaborations with Lady Gaga. His attention to detail ensures a shrewd studio feng shui and top tier recording equipment, optimized for professional use. Imagine a sky-high studio with sweeping views of Mount Rainier. The active volcano is an icon of the Pacific Northwest, inspiring artists for generations. Take a romantic getaway an octave higher in the Sound Suite by having your own personal recording session, complete with all the

bells and whistles of a W stay: cocktails and gourmet coffee delivered on demand, lavish amenities throughout, and a divine bed to escape to at the end of the night. This new initiative illustrates how the evolving wish and whimsy of the modern hotel guest comes to life in the cultural programming of W Hotels. W Hotels dub their lobby areas “Living Rooms” and the W Seattle version is a destination in itself, allowing guests to dive right into a key social hub of the local scene. The northwest corner features a series of oversize wallpaper panels depicting a record collection with many titles from Seattle’s most beloved bands. This certainly gives the space a ‘sonic lodge’ feel, an eclectic mix of materials influenced by Emerald City lore and legend. Similar ingenious design touches can be found throughout. Grand timber “lodge poles” inspired by Northwest Native American culture greet guests on arrival, while tree ring flooring is a clear nod to the region’s logging past. Our favorite decorative element? A threestory fireplace with a built-in DJ booth, cleverly clad in industrialinspired stainless steel tiles evoking an airplane turbine, a tribute to both Seattle’s rich music and aviation histories. PLAY: Chambers Bay An hour drive from Seattle one will find Chambers Bay, a course that excites on all fronts and lures you back time and again. Celebrating a decade of excellence this year, Chambers Bay is heralded as the “#1 Public Golf Course in Washington State” by Golf Digest. After hosting 2015 U.S. Open, golfers from across the country and VIP guests from 27 countries flocked to the course. With no sign of resting on such laurels, Chambers Bay leadership has secured the honor of hosting the inaugural US Amateur FourBall Championship in 2019. Carved into the site of a former sand and gravel mine adjacent to Puget Sound, the course boasts divine views of the sound framed by the iconic Olympic Mountains. Designed by the esteemed Robert Trent Jones II, Chambers Bay possesses all the attributes of the world’s greatest golf courses. Imagine a dramatic links landscape with deep dunes and hypnotizing holes dotted along archetypal Pacific Northwest geographical features. (The most impressive feature to discerning surface snobs? The entire course is planted in pristine fescue, the grass found on traditional British links.) Risk and reward opportunities abound, and wide fairways welcome all golfers to swing away. While playing Chambers Bay, you will notice how distinct each hole is, and you will certainly remember each over a sundown pint at the clubhouse. Jones’ fairways roll true, but the design alchemy of the course forces you to be accurate. Consult with the resident golf caddies on strategies from tee to green that will get you around the course most effectively. Paying attention to yardages will help you set up great birdie opportunities. Be sure to take full advantage of your tee time by checking into Tacoma’s exclusive Hotel Murano for their Championship Experience. Three USGA championship courses are yours to conquer with complimentary same-day replays at Chambers Bay, Gold Mountain, and the Home Course. Negotiations are also underway to develop on-site hotels and accommodations to attract even more guests at this booming golf hotspot.

RELAX: Chihuly Garden and Glass

The celebrated EMP Museum (founded by Paul Allen in 2000) has now been re-opened as the Museum of Pop Culture, or MoPOP for short. Given the behemoth breadth of what the museum houses (including extensive archives on sci-fi and video games), the reboot marks a playful refresh for a new generation. One of the city’s most beloved cultural gems, MoPOP frames an inspiring dialogue on where we are at as a society. So whether you wish to indulge your inner Trekkie, or trace the impact of Seattle cultural icons like Kurt Cobain by touring Nirvana’s historic legacy, this is Seattle’s premier cultural showcase.

Adjacent to MoPOP in Seattle Center — home to the Space Needle and other incredible Seattle landmarks like the city’s renowned Science Center and former home of the SuperSonics, Key Arena — you will find another incredibly unique museum. Chihuly Garden & Glass provides an intimate look at the influences of another Seattle cultural icon, artist Dale Chihuly. Both a comprehensive look at Chihuly’s unparalleled work and an immersive visual experience, the Garden features incredible sights not found in typical museums like hypnotic live glass-blowing demonstrations, and an exquisite “International Fountain” that is perfectly synchronized to music. PLAY: Gold Mountain Golf Club Few discoveries thrill an avid golfer more than the mastery of a hidden gem. The original of the two courses at Gold Mountain, the Cascade Course is shorter than its sibling the Olympic and quintessentially Pacific Northwest in spirit. The back nine features dramatic elevation changes, while the front is fringed with towering evergreens for ample shade. A well-appointed pro shop awaits, where you can brush up on shot selection strategies direct from insiders. The Cascade Course is certainly less demanding than the Olympic course, allowing for a more meditative atmosphere. Imagine wide open fairways that are immaculately groomed to perfection. Once you’re up to speed on these greens, you’ll relish the tricky breaks in play. Feeling energetic? Get out there early and take full advantage of the 36 hole special. Revel in that priceless feeling watching a well-driven ball soar through scenic fairways framed by towering timber. Olympic at Gold Mountain is one of the premier public courses in Washington and a must play when visiting the region. Dense croppings of trees give players a feeling of isolation, and the design lends itself easily to repeat play, delivering more athletic thrills the second time around. The hubris-slaying, uphill Par-4 4th is one of the most confounding on the course, but oh so deliciously so. A thoughtful and stellar series of links, the heroic Olympic leaves you wanting more. Rather desperately. This lengthy course features a handful of long, challenging holes while also presenting opportunities for low scores. Celebrated cuisine anchors Gold Mountain’s clubhouse, as well as the ability to host 300 banquet guests.

2017 marks the tenth anniversary of the Olympic Sculpture Park. The outdoor branch of the Seattle Art Museum, the park is a vehicle for contemporary art, as well as an ideal spot for picnics, scenic strolls, and serene contemplation. The expansive green space features indigenous plants and walking paths that wind past works by top-caliber artists such as Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, and Alexander Calder. (Calder’s cherry red Eagle steel sculpture has inspired a legion of photographers.) The park’s gift shop and café remain big draws, as is a free annual series called Summer at SAM.

Drawing Seattle’s well-heeled elite, Ethan Stowell’s Goldfinch Tavern boasts the most spectacular Elliott Bay views in downtown Seattle. Perched in a prime spot at the Four Seasons Hotel Seattle, this is a swoon-at-first-sight kind of place. The menu is focused on upscale, sophisticated Pacific Northwest cuisine, and Stowell executes an impressive seafood lineup to complement the maritime vibe. Hamachi crudo is a must, as is the sweet dungeness crab when in season. For turf lovers, the kitchen’s Wagyu steak game is on point. Needless to say, this see-and-be-seen hotspot draws major power players come lunch time.

SHOP: The Shops at The Bravern

Affluent travelers always flock to Seattle’s leading luxury shopping destination, The Shops at The Bravern, and the center’s recent partnership with Virtuoso only signals more incredible perks. The agreement treats refined travelers to an elevated VIP shopping experience through signature services such as complimentary welcome gifts, concierge service, car transportation, personal shoppers, and stylists available by appointment. This is where you can shop the legendary Neiman Marcus shoe department, and take in the latest in luxury accessories at stores such as Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Prada. In addition, the area’s first and only Bottega Veneta is now open and luring leather hounds in a big way. Sugar Factory American Brasserie is set to follow, and a nearly 20,000-sqaure foot spa and salon by beauty guru Gene Juarez (one of the most notable salons in Seattle with over 10 locations). Linger after a power shopping session at one of the many exemplary on site restaurants, a great way to wind down after a classic Seattle day.

EAT: Shuckers, The Fairmont Olympic Hotel Oyster aficionados absolutely make a reservation at Shuckers, one of the city’s oldest and most esteemed oyster bars. The cozy wood-paneled resto-bar is perfect for kicking back after strolling Pike Place Market. The perennial hotspot offers a whopping nine preparations of seasonal bivalves and impresses international guests and locals alike with perfectly seared fish entrees and a divine array of raw bar offerings. We may be purists, but hedonistic chowhounds can also order any oyster a la Rockefeller, house-smoked, or a la Olympic (baked with Dungeness crab and bacon on top).

STAY: The Fairmont Olympic Hotel

A Seattle landmark since 1924, the Fairmont Olympic offers an elegant haven and top-notch service. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this magnificently preserved beacon of Renaissance Revival architecture is as grand as it gets for Seattle. Recent renovations mark a return to splendor, to a time when important hotels symbolized the social and economic savoir faire of a city. The Fairmont Olympic Hotel shares deep roots with the city, situated on the original University of Washington campus grounds. The hotel’s loyal executive clientele certainly appreciates the 450room hotel’s prime downtown location and timeless glamor. And adorned in chic flapper-era style, the impressive lobby honors the hotel’s grand past and has played host to many a power meeting. Guestrooms are tasteful retreats with soft pastel colors and period inspired furnishings, while fresh fruit and flowers add a touch of home. Bath products are from Le Labo’s tremendous Rose 31 line and come in recyclable packaging that exemplifies the brand’s eco-friendly choices. A rooftop herb garden and apiary are the crown jewels of Fairmont’s sustainability portfolio. Be sure to order the hotel’s Honey Ale, made with honey from the rooftop beehives. the 42-foot swimming pool, tucked into a solarium on the third floor, is a rarity among city hotels, and its imposing glass walls open to the sky come summer. The hotel contains three tremendous restaurants: The elegant Georgian, The Terrace Lounge piano bar, and local institution Shuckers. The hotel boasts popular private party spaces; the Boeing company retains a private suite for entertaining. Sip Darjeeling under ornate crystal chandeliers at The Georgian, pose for a portrait on the grand mahogany staircase and feel like royalty in the Fairmont’s grand European lobby. Speaking of Camelot, John F. Kennedy stayed in the Presidential Suite during his visit to Seattle. 60 years later, it is no less regal.

S

he is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors of her generation, possessing an uncanny ability to effortlessly inhabit a wide range of characters. Although she is currently most famous for her role on HBO’s smash hit Westworld, every character in her oeuvre is real, honest, and brimming with emotion, whether or not the project meets her talent. So it shouldn’t come as such a surprise that Evan Rachel Wood has slid so gracefully into her latest role...as a rock star.

ast year, Wood formed the group Rebel and a Basketcase with her fiancee and artistic abettor, Zach Villa, and I have been invited to meet the two at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. With its sleek interior, lively atmosphere, and ample music memorabilia, the hotel is the perfect place to encounter a rock star power couple for the first time. The duo is there to perform a special concert to celebrate the launch of Hard Rock’s new WAX program, which allows each guest to have a Crosley record player and a basket of vinyl delivered to their room upon request. It’s a very cool, very Hard Rock program, and I couldn’t think of two more appropriate ambassadors than Wood and Villa. The Rebel and a Basketcase experience is both auditory and visual, with striking pastel images that recall vintage Bowie and music that is a beautiful, freeing assault incorporating an array of genres as disparate as the characters in Wood’s filmography. (Electronic Pop, 80s Glam Rock, Contemporary Alternative...there is a lot to feast on here.) Lyrically it’s a little easier to characterize. The unifying theme of songs like “Today” and “Oh Yeah” is one of freedom — freedom of expression, freedom from inhibition, freedom from dogmatic gender roles. “Why can’t I just be me?” Wood asks repeatedly on the latter track, a single from last year. If you’ve been following her career, you would know that she is not one to readily conform. It may sound like a cliché, but Wood literally has been acting her entire life. She grew up in North Carolina amongst a family of thespians and film professionals. Her father was the director of a local theatre company where as an infant she first appeared in a production of A Christmas Carol, and throughout her childhood honed her skills. By the time she was a teenager, Wood had already appeared in films alongside the likes of Al Pacino and Nicole Kidman, and at the age of fourteen, she earned her first of three Golden Globe nominations for playing a troubled teenager in the controversial movie Thirteen. Both the film and Wood’s performance felt like a revelation.

Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos

Wood quickly developed a knack for stealing scenes. She was riveting as Mickey Rourke’s estranged daughter in The Wrestler and heartbreaking as a tragically naive intern who falls for George Clooney in The Ides of March. But it wasn’t until Westworld that she had another front-and-center starring showcase with the kind of widespread attention as Thirteen. The sci-fi series debuted last fall as the biggest new show in HBO history (yes, even bigger than Game of Thrones), and was just awarded an astounding 22 Emmy nominations, including one for Wood (her second) for her lead role as android “host” Dolores Abernathy. Her character’s journey was tragic, heart-rending, and profoundly cathartic. In a cast that included titans like Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris, Wood shone brightest. To a different degree, the same might be said about her performance at the Hard Rock. Despite some minor technical difficulties and obvious growing pains (it’s only the band’s second or third show with this lineup), Rebel and a Basketcase pulsate with vibrant energy and emotion. While Villa is clearly a seasoned pro, flashing classic guitar god poise, Wood is far less polished, far less calculating, and, just as she is on-screen, undeniably captivating. Towards the end of the show, she boldly stage dives head-first into the crowd. “That was my first time crowd surfing!” she exclaims enthusiastically afterward. One gets the sense that Wood might be having the most fun of her entire life in these performances. It is only fitting that someone who grew up acting in plays would meet her fiancee on-stage in front of a crowd, but that is exactly how Wood and Villa came together. In a meet-cute maybe even too far fetched for Hollywood, the couple first laid eyes upon one another while acting in John Hughes Cabaret with the theatre company For the Record. Both were playing characters from Hughes’ Breakfast ISSUE 3 . 2017

Wood as Dolores on Westworld (HBO)

Club: Villa the Judd Nelson role (“Rebel”), and Wood the Ally Sheedy character (“Basketcase”). The creative chemistry was immediate, the rest is history. Villa seems like a calming, grounding force in the hectic life of a young actress and mother, and both describe their professional relationship as utterly symbiotic. Both write, produce, and conceptualize visuals. Both collaborated to direct their new, blithely 80s video for “Today.” After a while, I get a strong feeling that Wood is the unbridled id — all raw inherent talent — whereas Villa is her more calculated left-brain counterpart. “There are certain things he hears that I just don’t,” she tells me, “he’s really good at fine-tuning the sounds and the instruments; he gets into the minutia where I am like ‘this is so out of my realm.’” Yet she goes on to say: “But then I will come in with these big stupid ideas — ‘it needs an Enya chorus!’ — that somehow work.” It’s “macro/micro,” Villa says. Westworld doesn’t return until some time next year, and while plot details are scarce — “I literally know as much as you,” Wood jokes — one thing we do know is that it would be unwise for her character to not have a central role again. The success of the show’s brilliant, labyrinthine first season hinged primarily on the strength of her performance. Delores was the perfect stand-in for the audience. She personified our confusion. And it was because Wood made this inhuman character so utterly compelling, so feeling, and inexorably human, that the entire journey was so emotional.

“There are certain things he hears that I just don’t. He’s really good at fine-tuning the sounds and the instruments; he gets into the minutia where I am like ‘this is so out of my realm.’” - Wood on working with Villa When I ask her about the heart-wrenching moment when (spoiler alert!) Dolores finally reaches the end of “the maze” and learns the truth about her existence, she reveals that she bawled her eyes out on set that day. “That was tough,” she confesses. Aside from Westworld, both Wood and Villa assure me that a full-length album should be out “very soon,” and Wood admits she wants to start transitioning more into writing and directing. She has a script she co-wrote with Jenny Slate (Obvious Child), a dramedy she hopes will be “kind of revolutionary for women,” and intends to direct in the immediate future. Later as the bar is closing and Wood has gone to bed, I candidly ask Villa if he thinks she can pull it off. “Yes,” he says without hesitation. “She can do anything.”

THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND INSPIRING BUSINESS MINDS WORKING TODAY

EVAN SPIEGEL SNAPCHAT

HOW HE IS CHANGING THE WORLD: The youngest self-made billionaire in the world, 26-year-old Evan Spiegel founded Snapchat shortly before dropping out of Stanford in 2012, and the rest is history. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Spiegel should feel extremely flattered. In the past year, Facebook (whom Spiegel famously turned down a $4 billion offer from) and Instagram have shamelessly aped all of Snapchat’s core features. One thing they can’t copy? The cool quotient. Snapchat remains the go-to app for millennials and teens who reject the manufactured, like-based infrastructure of its competition. And Spiegel? He seems focused on constant innovation and a foundation quietlycreated in February that aims to support “arts, education, and youth [services] over the course of the next 15 to 20 years.”

HEARTS AND MINDS OF AMERICA, GUARDIANS FOR HEROES HOW HE IS CHANGING THE WORLD:

After starting his first business in his teens, Joey Fazio dropped out of college and joined the Air Force. Several years and a few failed business attempts later, he found himself broke and sleeping on an air mattress in his mother’s house. It was there he stayed until he made his first million. Today, amongst other things, he manages the assets of athletes, musicians, and celebrities; owns the sports supplement company FitStrong and multiple Denny’s and Crunch Fitness franchises; and invests in commercial real estate. But his true passion is giving back to disabled veterans like himself and his father. Working with Hearts and Minds of America and Guardians for Heroes, Fazio helps veterans cope with the inherent traumas of war. “I truly believe we will end the relentless suffering of PTSD in the near future,” he tells Jetset. “Nothing will satisfy me more than to give these brave, selfless men and women their lives back.”

HOW HE IS CHANGING THE WORLD: By revolutionizing restaurant and hospitality experiences and transcending normative chef-driven restaurant culture. Birnbaum’s EMM Group has been responsible for some of the New York’s hottest restaurants and nightclubs, but perhaps his greatest claim to fame is the phenomenon known as CATCH. Unlike most restaurants, CATCH is just as much about the experience as it is about great food and service. It manages to find a perfect balance between vibrant atmosphere and fine dining experience, perhaps no more emblematic than at its LA location. There, on any given night, one is liable to spot a who’s who of Hollywood elite, scores of paparazzi camped outside, and Birnbaum in the middle of it all, adroitly running the show.

Honest Advice for Entrepreneurs By Daymond John

I

launched FUBU in my early twenties. As many of you know, I started out sewing hats in the living room of my mom’s house with the money I made working at Red Lobster and selling them on the street corner. I managed to turn that into a $4 billion clothing empire. I am not bragging when I tell this very familiar story; I just want to remind you that anything is possible and take the time to carefully illustrate some of the steps that got me from Point A to B. It wasn’t blind luck, and it certainly didn’t happen overnight. For those of you who have launched successful brands of your own (of any scope and in any industry), then you know the tremendous amount of blood, sweat, and tears that go into building a brand. You have to live and breathe it. You have to represent it at every turn and constantly be thinking about how you can further it. It’s a painstaking process, but when it does finally take off, you feel immense pride and ownership in seeing your baby grow and evolve into something beyond you, something bigger with a life of its own.

Altitude // Shark Talk

“For those trying to launch a new brand, I cannot stress the importance of finding knowledgeable people in your field and doing the proper market research.” Invest in Financial Intelligence In my last Jetset article, I wrote about the importance of educating our new workforce for the jobs of tomorrow. I talked about the antiquated, inept nature of our education system and lamented the fact that people today are not taught basic financial intelligence. Kids come out of college with insane credit card debt. They are brought up in the culture of “you need money to make money.” But whether you are operating a billion dollar business or launching a clothing line or simply managing your portfolio, you need to have sound financial intelligence.

70

As a Jetset reader, odds are you have already scaled to great heights in your field. Every true entrepreneur has tales of success and failure, lessons learned and crises overcame. And when Jetset told me they were running their first ever Entrepreneur Issue — aimed at honoring and educating entrepreneurs both young and old — they asked me what I wanted to write about, what wisdom I had to share on the subject. My first thought was to offer five rules for those launching a brand for the first or fifteenth time. So whether you are young and hungry like I was, or far more seasoned and simply looking to break into a new field, here are a few things I wish I would have known back when I was that kid in Queens with dreams of a brand of my own…. JETSETMAG.COM

This extends beyond going to business school and getting an MBA. Now despite the fact that I never went to college, I will never disparage higher education. But I will say that your education doesn’t stop when you grab that diploma. If you are a real entrepreneur, then your business education is a life-long work-in-progress. It never ceases. For those trying to launch a new brand (or any business venture), I cannot stress the importance of finding knowledgeable people in your field and doing the proper market research. Conduct cost analysis, interview people, study similar companies and market trends. The better your financial education, the better your brand. Period. And be smart with your money. Never let that financial education go to waste. Take Affordable Steps Don’t go out and try to build Rome in a day. If you have ten pieces of product that you can’t sell, then raising $10,000,000 to have a million pieces of crap just puts you in a far deeper hole. You may think you are doing great but you are really just leveraging your brand to death. One of the top reasons a lot of new entrepreneurs fail is not because they lack funding — just look at Silicon Valley, where thousands of VCs out there are just dying to inject nascent businesses with cash — it’s actually the opposite. Many businesses fail because they are overfunded.

Altitude // Shark Talk

“No matter where you are at, take affordable steps. Don’t overextend yourself or ever allow yourself to be dug into a hole.” If someone was starting a company and they went out and borrowed ten times what they are worth and mortgaged their house to fund it, I would tell them they are being extremely foolish. Same for the man with $100 million in assets who seeks a billion dollars in funding to launch a brand. No matter where you are at, take affordable steps. Don’t overextend yourself or ever allow yourself to be dug into a hole. For six years while I was launching FUBU I was still taking shifts at Red Lobster. Why? Because it gave me medical benefits, kept the lights on, and kept me fed (perhaps too well). Now I was only making about $35,000 a year, but over the course of six years, that added up to over $200,000. That’s over $200,000 that I didn’t have to borrow, $200,000 of debt that I didn’t have hamstringing my fledgling business. Never lose that mentality.

72

Rethink OPM Everyone in business is familiar with the concept of OPM, or “Other People’s Money.” Countless billionaires built their entire careers off of OPM. (Heck, our new president has often bragged about his OPM prowess.) But one of my mother’s greatest contributions JETSETMAG.COM

to my financial education, was getting me to think about the “M” in OPM as something beyond money. Other People’s Manufacturing. Other People’s Mentoring. Other People’s Manpower. Other People’s Mindpower…the list goes on. Regardless of how much capital you have, you need to constantly be leveraging. You need to constantly be thinking of ways to utilize other people’s assets. When I got my first $50,000 order, I was ecstatic….until I realized I didn’t have the money to actually fulfill it. Determined to find a solution, I went to the printer who used to charge me $6.25 a pop to screen print a shirt. I told him to instead charge me $7.50 per shirt, ship the shirts directly to the retailer, and in turn the retailer would pay them. Why did it work? Because it was Other People’s Manufacturing. It was a win-win-win scenario. The retailer got to do business with someone they knew had an established business and could trust (not some kid in a busted Nissan), the printer got a new retail contact they could possibly exploit later (and an extra $1.25 a shirt), and I got paid without lifting a finger or (most importantly) giving up a single point of precious equity. Always be thinking about how you can utilize other people’s assets to benefit all parties.

“You must create trust with the people who buy your products and make them invest in you and your business.” Find a Way to Catch Fire When I was trying to make FUBU grow, I knew I needed the proper spokespeople to help it reach the next step. The biggest rapper on the planet at the time was LL Cool J, who had just signed a multi-million-dollar deal with The Gap. Lucky for me LL was from Queens and still lived there. We knew where he lived, so my crew and I camped out at LL’s house for hours, determined to talk to him. When he finally came outside, we showed him the clothes. LL was a businessman, he had financial education, so he was reluctant to wear a product for free when he was getting millions to wear another. But I convinced him that wearing FUBU would prove he still represented where he came from, still hadn’t forgot his roots. He reluctantly took some clothes. A little while later, The Gap aired a commercial featuring LL rapping while wearing nothing but Gap clothes...that is nothing except the FUBU hat they inexplicably let him wear (and mention by name when he spelled out the brand’s acronym in his rap). After that, our orders went through the roof. The next year, we cleared $300 million in sales. In one master stroke, my brand had caught fire. My advice? Find your LL. Find that one person or demographic or venue

74

JETSETMAG.COM

that is going to best help drive your brand into the stratosphere (and at minimal cost). If you are launching a clothing company, you could borrow or spend a ton of capital on a massive marketing budget...or you could just mail one article of clothing to 100 demographically relevant celebrities with a hand-written note. If just one of them wears it on their Instagram, you just did more for your brand than a million dollar marketing campaign ever could.

Know Your Brand...And Protect it at All Costs Your customers are part of your company’s ecosystem. You must create trust with the people who buy your products and make them invest in you and your business. Their belief in what you do will result in returns beyond imagination. But never lose sight of who your audience is, what they want, and above all else, what your brand is. I knew FUBU to its core. I knew that LL was the perfect person to help it grow. If I could have gotten a hat on Steven Tyler, I would have probably said no, because despite his legendary fame, he was not my brand. Never lose sight of your brand. Never lose sight of your core audience. Follow these steps and some day you might be telling tales of your brand in the pages of your favorite magazine….

USING VIDEO TO MARKET YOUR BRAND BY BARRY LABOV

I

f you’re an active Facebook user, then you know how ubiquitous video content is on social media nowadays. You’re hard-pressed to open your page and not see a string of videos posted or liked by friends. In fact, today video posts seemingly outnumber photos and traditional status updates. Video is changing the way we communicate with each other; rather than emails and letters that can be as lengthy as we want them to be, short videos can be much more effective in communicating a message with efficacy — especially to those whose time is in high demand.

It started with (the now defunct) Vine, moved on to Instagram videos and Snapchat (which everyone is copying nowadays), and now an increasing number of people are viewing and creating their own video content. This shows no sign of slowing, and thus video should always be in consideration for any comprehensive marketing strategy. According to CodeFuel, 64 percent of consumers are more likely to buy a product after watching a video about it. Video is a great way to generate excitement about a new product or help customers get more out of a product they already own. Short video tutorials can engage customers and provide them with key information. They can deliver instructions on how to operate a product or troubleshoot a problem efficiently and expediently, increasing customer satisfaction in the process.

Email marketing is another opportunity to implement video. According to research conducted by Email Monks and GetResponse, using video in emails increases click-through rates by 55 percent, and email forwarding by 41 percent. For people inundated with emails throughout the day, messages containing short videos can be a refreshing change. By using videos in emails to showcase products, brands, and services, companies can engage both current and prospective customers in an exciting, new way. Of course, not everything you may want to convey will always fit into a brief, one-minute-or-less video. In these cases, it’s better to break content up into a series of videos. That accomplishes two things. Firstly, it helps keep your videos short — most people will stop watching after around a minute — and secondly, it spreads your content out, in turn creating more opportunities to connect with your audience over a period of time. Some of the most effective video content is user-generated. According to YouTube, 3.5 billion hours of video are watched on its site each month. While not all the videos on YouTube are usergenerated, people are becoming millionaires by starting channels that focus on everything from how-tos to video game playthroughs to toy reviews. Nowadays, a successful business needs a Youtube channel, and companies would be wise to court the platform’s stars to market their products and services and raise awareness. User-generated content can be incredibly effective. One tactic is selecting brand representatives and sending them free product to try with the agreement that they will create short videos that show their excitement about the product and how they’re using it, then share them on social media sites. It’s easy to “like” a video on Facebook, which expands a video’s reach beyond the initial brand representative’s network. To further encourage people to purchase a product, some videos should include a call to action, whether its to visit a product’s site, or provide a coupon code that can be used on the purchase of the product.

Video can also be a highly effective way to communicate your brand to customers, prospects, employees, suppliers, entire industries, and more. The average Internet user spends 88 percent more time on a site with video than without. A company’s site should be one of the primary outlets for conveying and strengthening a brand. Video is also a more personal way to communicate and share a brand. Short videos about what makes a particular business unique, its products, services, and brand story are all reasons for visitors to stay on a site longer. The longer someone remains on a site, the more likely they’ll associate with that brand, which could prompt anything from purchasing products to investing to applying for a job and more.

Surprisingly, despite all the potential video has for marketing products and promoting brands, (according to Kantar Media) only 24 percent of companies are using it to market to consumers. Perhaps companies are intimidated. But while producing a video may be seen as a daunting task at first, when you remember that brevity and succinctness are key when conveying your brand, it can be much easier. If done well, a one-minute video can convey a message equal to pages upon pages of copy (which we all know audiences would never read). And video doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon, which means that it’s always going to be a valid consideration when devising a marketing strategy for selling products or developing and strengthening brands. Here’s to going viral.

FIVE STEPS TO DEVELOPING A WORLD-CLASS TEAM BY KEN MCELROY

I

f you look at some of the biggest, most valuable companies in the world — names like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Facebook — many would wager that their success is primarily attributable to luck (“Not everyone can be like Mark Zuckerberg”). But the truth is, one of the biggest reasons why these companies became massively successful is because they hired the right people early on. The entire strategy at these companies attracts the

right employees. Because employees today want to be part of something grander than just going to work. They want to work for a company that has a bigger purpose, one beyond simply making money. Companies that understand this attract better employees and experience less turnover, which in turn drives profit. JETSETMAG.COM

Hardly a day passes without someone asking me for business advice. I’m sure most entrepreneurs experience the same thing. Be it a student, a struggling entrepreneur, or an up-and-comer at a large company, most people want that “one top tip,” that single piece of advice that can place a person on the path to success. If only things were that simple. The reality is that there are myriad things that contribute to business success. But here are five steps to nurturing the right workplace environment.

# 1. The Power of Vision: “Where Are We going?” If there were one thing I wish I had understood earlier in my career, it would be the power of having a vision. You cannot start planning if you do not know where you are going and what you wish to become. Unfortunately, not all employees are fully aware of where their organization is heading, but having a clear-cut vision can rectify that problem. Everyone in the organization will be kept in the loop, and this awareness will give them the focus to best carry out their assigned responsibilities. Companies with vision have a BHAG. Meaning “Big Hairy Audacious Goal,” the term was first coined by James Collins and Jerry Porras in their 1994 book Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies. A well-thought-out BHAG encourages companies to define visionary goals that are more strategic and emotionally compelling. Because a great vision is inspiring. It gets you and everyone in the organization excited to come to work; it’s the cathedral that disciples arrive every day to passionately construct. But this is not mere abstract thinking — a vision must also be both strategically sound and reasonably tangible.

#2. Culture: It Needs to Be Personal. Once the vision is set, you can move on to building the next important piece, the corporate culture. Two of the most important aspects of this are keeping it authentic and making it personal. Your company culture needs to be an extension of your own consistently held and clearly demonstrated beliefs, and this goes beyond dollars. You should be personally invested in the fate of your company; after all, it’s your baby. Your fingerprints should be clearly visible on everything in your company, and its culture should be a reflection of who you are as a person and what you care about. Steve Jobs was a visionary perfectionist; those ideals still permeate to everything Apple does today. Culture can make or break a company. According to a Bain & Company survey of 365 companies in Europe, Asia, and North America, 81 percent believe that a company lacking a high-performance culture ISSUE 3 . 2017

“If you create a culture where people love coming to work and are moving in the same direction, you will land where you set your heights.” is doomed to mediocrity, yet fewer than 10 percent succeed in building one. Culture is not something you simply write on a wall. You need to nurture it. It constantly evolves from day to day and you need to give it the freedom to grow. There’s a reason an oftcited Gallup survey discovered 70 percent of American workers are disengaged on the job. Companies and leadership can easily get caught up in the everyday struggles and forget the importance of creating an inspiring overarching culture for employees. This is especially important for entrepreneurs and small businesses to keep in mind. You don’t need to be a Fortune 500

company to develop and implement a great culture. You don’t need Facebook’s money, Zappos’ popularity, or even an office slide to build the culture you want. No, the best way to keep the focus on the culture is to assign ownership. It sounds simple, but companies need someone who is directly responsible for their culture. Of course, this person can’t do it on their own, but deputize someone to focus on culture and push everyone else in the right direction (whether they’re hiring candidates or managing company events). Remember, chase the vision, not the money. If you create a culture where people love coming to work and are moving in the same direction, you will land where you set your heights.

#3. Hire Slowly, Fire Quickly. Hiring and firing is a routine part of company growth. This may seem obvious, but many companies are running at such a blistering pace that they oftentimes discount the importance of selectiveness in favor of expediency when filling positions. This one hiring mistake can kill a company’s culture and seriously hurt JETSETMAG.COM

a company’s profitability. Hiring slowly and methodically to find the most appropriate people that fit your company’s culture is of the utmost importance. At our company, we hire for attitude only; we only want positive people in our organization. I firmly believe that someone with a great mindset and positive attitude can and will learn anything. In most companies, attitude trumps experience every single day. In the last five years, our company has won numerous local and national awards. These awards are the result of employee surveys. The reason this is important is because we continue to attract the very best new people. To ensure this, we have a hiring process that consists of three interviews in three different locations with three different people. I want to make sure that we are hiring the right people, and that is worth taking the necessary time. Inversely, be sure to fire quickly because believe it or not, the people you fire are more important to culture than those you hire. By handling toxic people expediently, you will command the respect of the rest of your staff, maintain the culture, and reduce workplace stress.

#4. Functional Systems: The Keys to Working Less. Business systems are often overlooked by many small business owners, as it can be hard to focus on operations when you are busy growing a company. However, developing systems is the only way to truly work less in the long-run and better understand the direction of your business every day. Every business has several key systems that, when run properly, will help the business to be profitable. Monitoring these systems and watching key measurements within them will let the owner know when to make changes and when to keep plotting the same course. Here are my top four systems: Workspace: This comes back to vision and culture. A pleasant working environment with clearly defined goals can really make a difference in employee morale and is usually just a matter of thinking about your employees needs. Good morale brought about by small tweaks to office design or décor can help to increase job satisfaction and productivity making for a more successful, happier

ISSUE 3 . 2017

Altitude // Estates

business. Once a positive system with a clear vision is in place, your office will function more productively. Bookkeeping: Keeping up to date with how your business is doing financially is paramount. Keeping track of expenses will help you to make good buying decisions, and watching the inflows of your business will tell you if your sales and sales conversion are working. This can be done by using software or by hiring a bookkeeper. In either case, the owner must analyze the reports to truly understand if the business is profitable. KPIs / Measurement Systems: KPIs are Key Performance Indicators you must define and keep track of throughout the year. Each measurement should be reviewed with a particular frequency and then adjustments must be made to the business based on the trends the measurements show. Workflow: Define how the work flows within your business. How does a file or order flow through the business? How does the phone get answered in your business and how does the call get handled? What happens when you take on a new client/customer? How does the work get tracked? Who makes the decision when there are conflicts? Define the inputs of each employee involved. Where are the handoffs within the workflow? Look for places with no coverage and define it. You want to build a business that runs efficiently without you and this can only be done with well-defined systems.

#5 Transparency: “The Currency of Trust” Transparency is a powerful thing in all relationships. The reason most leaders are not transparent is because they believe they

84

JETSETMAG.COM

will be viewed as less authoritative — that the credentials they’ve worked so hard to attain will lose their power, leverage, and gravitas — if they peel back the curtain. But people want to relate to their leaders. People want to know that their leaders have experienced the same problems and personal hardships. It humanizes them. If you survey the workplace — aside from the need for job security and career advancement opportunities — employees want to be a part of a workplace culture that puts a premium on delivering the truth. They desire their leaders to be proactive in sharing where the company is headed and forthright about its future. When leaders are transparent, problems are solved faster. By being open and honest about company problems, employees can help find solutions. And several heads are always better than one. A culture that values transparency in the workplace breeds engaged employees. In fact, Harvard Business Review’s 2013 employee engagement survey revealed that 70 percent of those surveyed say they’re most engaged when senior leadership continuously updates and communicates company strategy. And employees don’t just quit their jobs, they quit their bosses. The 2014 CareerBuilder survey revealed that 37 percent of the 3,008 employees surveyed were likely to leave their jobs due to a poor opinion about their boss’ performance. As people become more transparent with one another, their relationships deepen. And who is responsible for leading that move towards transparency? It’s the leadership of the business. Transparency has to start at the top. Begin making these changes today and be closer to having the company you want tomorrow.

How Being Selfish Can Ruin Your Business By Robert Kiyosaki

obody likes cheap people. Just yesterday, I tipped a porter at the airport only a dollar for handling one small piece of luggage. My rationalization was, “It’s only a small bag.” And although he seemed OK with my one-dollar tip, I felt terrible because I felt cheap. But being cheap is not only shameful and embarrassing in social settings, it can be absolutely detrimental when conducting business.

“We all appreciate people who listen to us. The next time you are conducting business, make sure you are actually listening to the people you are working with.”

We all know cheap rich people. I have one friend in particular who is extremely wealthy...and extremely cheap. He is so cheap, it’s often comical. Two years ago, he and his wife hosted a party for a few friends where they shared stories and pictures from their dream vacation to Italy. The couple raved on and on about their luxurious trip: the sumptuous meals, picturesque vineyards, and the fine wines they discovered. We all shared a few bottles of their “new favorite wine” from their “new favorite vineyard” (which was quite good). At the end of the evening, guests were each given a bottle of the storied vino as a gift. My wife Kim and I thought it was very generous of them to transport their special wine all the way from Italy and to give us each a bottle. When we got home, Kim — somewhat of a wine connoisseur — turned the bottle upside down and found a U.S. big-box price sticker on the bottom. The Price? $6.99. Now, my mother taught me long ago that, “It’s not the gift that counts, but the thought behind it,” but after we stopped laughing, we couldn’t help but wonder what the “thought” really was.

hiding behind airline curtains with a bloody mouth was catastrophic negative press for the airline. Even worse, with his insensitive reaction, United CEO Oscar Munoz only escalated the situation and turned it into a full-blown PR nightmare. It’s frustrating because simple respect and generosity may have delivered a totally different outcome (or possibly even circumvented the disaster completely). Let this be a lesson to all CEOs on how not to conduct business. As prominent business people, we are all going to be faced with

I realized they did not have to give us anything. We have enjoyed their company and friendship for years, so the bottle of wine was quite unnecessary. I did my best to remind myself that “it’s the thought that counts.” My problem was I had a difficult time finding pleasant thoughts about my rich (but cheap) friend. I still love him, but miserly moments like that one scar my memory...and make me not want to do business with him. A successful person should never be cheap in any circumstance, but especially when they are dealing with potential business partners.

crises (PR and otherwise), at one point or another. It’s inevitable. But if we learn to handle them with grace and generosity, we can weather the storm and gain people’s respect in the process. Remember when Walmart gave all their employees raises? I bet some cheap people on the board hated the idea. They were probably thinking solely about their bottom line. But not only was it the right thing to do for their workers, it ended up improving their stock price, employee morale, and public perception. Kindness and Generosity always pay dividends.

Kindness and Generosity Remember the viral video clip of a passenger being forcibly dragged off a United Airlines flight? The sight of this passenger, a renowned medical doctor, being dragged down the aisle and then JETSETMAG.COM

Give...and You Shall Receive My mom also taught me that “If you are pointing one finger forward, three fingers are pointing back at you.” It dawned on me that I could be generous if I listened more and talked less. Eventually, I

would apply this to my professional life. We all appreciate people who listen to us. The next time you are conducting business, make sure you are actually listening to the people you are working with. Make sure you’re not just waiting your turn to talk and trying and close the deal without actually understanding the person and their needs. In Sunday school I was taught, “Give and you shall receive.” I have found this works in business as well as in life. I have found that the more I give, the more money drops to the bottom line. In 2002, the real estate market here in Phoenix (where I live) was not just hot, it was simmering. Most properties were being sold before they were even listed for sale. In large commercial real estate transactions, the first dollars to be cut often come from the real estate agent’s commission. Many times, the real estate broker is the first casualty — sometimes cut out of the deal entirely. I took the opposite strategy. In 2002, I went to the number-one broker in Phoenix and instead of cutting his commission, I offered him a raise. My offer was a ten percent commission (rather than six), plus ten percent ownership in the property. In other words, I wanted him to become my partner, not just my broker. I know this sounds foolish to most “cheap” real estate investors — especially investors who think they’re being smart screwing the real estate agent — but I knew better.

Being generous to the best real estate agent in Phoenix ended up paying off handsomely to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. Immediately, the best deals came to us. While most competing real estate investors were working up a sweat, spending days beating the bushes looking for the best deals, the best deals were falling on our laps. Kim, myself, and our agent have made much more money being generous than we would have if we were greedy and cheap. Remember this when you are doing business. Remember that instead of looking solely at a one-time payout, you are building relationships that could be exponentially more beneficial for decades to come. So often, deals get torpedoed by egos. There is an old saying that I’m sure you’ve heard: “Would you rather have ninety percent of a million dollars or a hundred percent of nothing?” Most people choose the latter. They want it all. That’s the price for being cheap. Best known as the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad — the #1 personal finance book of all time — Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world think about money. He is an entrepreneur, educator, and investor who believes that each of us has the power to makes changes in our lives, take control of our financial future, and live the rich life we deserve. With perspectives on money and investing that often contradict conventional wisdom, Robert has earned an international reputation for straight talk, irreverence, and courage and has become a passionate and outspoken advocate for financial education.

Honest Advice for Entrepreneurs By Bettina Bathe

I

f you are a successful entrepreneur, there’s a high probability that at some point in time, you are going to be tempted or persuaded to write a book. Either you or those around you will come to the conclusion that you have an important story or valuable wisdom that you need to impart with the world. But then what? If you don’t already have a publisher secured, get ready for a long, frustrating, and expensive road. Luckily for you, I have been through it all and have some invaluable advice I am happy to share. I published my first book in 2003. A passionate lover of aviation, I spent a vast majority of my adult life as a pilot — flying everything from Cessnas to DC3s to King Airs — and as my career progressed, I had been toying for some time with the idea of writing a children’s book series about a female pilot. I wanted to truly understand my audience, so I would fly over different locales with my children and listen to their observations, which I would later incorporate into the stories so that they captured that ineffable perspective of childlike wonder and exploration. The series would be titled “Violet the Pilot,” and take readers all around the world on educational adventures.

92

I

then began meeting with publishers and pitching my idea. Much to my chagrin, they all “loved” the concept, but still wanted to hire in-house writers to actually write the books. Basically, they wanted to take my baby from me and pay me pennies on the dollar so that someone else could raise it. “Sure you’re an accomplished pilot, but leave the book-writing to professionals,” they said. (Let this also be a lesson that no matter how successful you are in one field, people will still try and pigeonhole you to one talent.) So, I figured if they didn’t need me, then I didn’t need them. I would go it alone. I started doing my homework. I went online and researched self-publishing and found reputable literary programs near me. It’s very important that you study books in your space; whether it’s a self-help book, a romance novel, or a children’s book like mine, you want to fully understand the mechanics of how to write your genre. Then I trademarked my concept — an integral step if you have a unique intellectual property like mine — and started searching for an illustrator. I scoured the internet, academic world, and publishing

You can go entirely on your own (which is a tough process, especially in my field), or, do what I did, and find a publisher you like and work out a share of the profits. You want make sure you receive your fair share, and without a literary agent this can be tough, so you need to be a skilled negotiator. You also want to maintain as much control as possible. (I wasn’t crazy about the level of control I had with my first publisher, so I found a different one and structured a better deal for the rest of the books in the series.) You then need to begin devising a marketing campaign. (Rejoice if you’ve made it this far, as this is where you can finally start to recover some of your investment.) For macro-marketing, contact TV and radio stations and create a website and social media profiles for your book. Then, pinpoint your target audience and figure out how to best reach them. I phoned schools, libraries, and aviation companies to try and connect with both children and my industry. Next I started pre-selling signed copies. I can’t stress how important this is, as you can recoup a substantial portion of your costs up front. Contact bookstores to do signings wherever else you can; it’s great revenue.

“You want to find an editor who not only brings experience, but truly understands your vision.” - Bettina Bathe circles for a talented illustrator capable of capturing what I was looking for in Violet: a whimsical interpretation of my daughter. (This process taught me that illustrators always want to own the characters they draw, so if you have illustrations, be sure to structure an agreement that gives you ownership to not just the property, but the likeness as well.) The next step was finding an editor. In publishing, good editors are utterly invaluable. You want to find one who not only brings experience, but truly understands your vision. Once I had settled on the right one, we began the crucial, painstaking process of actually crafting the first book. This meant illustration, proofing, revisions, rewrites, and developing a cover design. This is where it is important to point out the obvious truth of self-publishing. It’s not cheap. And regardless of how much cash you have, you’ll certainly feel leery about pumping money into something with no guarantee of an ROI. That’s where finding a distributor comes in. If you Google “How to self publish a book,” you will find countless independent publishers.

After that, it’s largely beyond your control. Your baby is off in the world, and all you can do is be a proud parent, promote it as best you can, and prey it’s a hit. I got lucky when Violet took off, as I was able to see a return on my investment and continue the series (now we are in the process of turning it into a TV show), but there are no guarantees. Publishing is a tough industry, and self-publishing can be a scary process. If you fail, it only hurts more because you poured everything into it. But when your book is actually successful, it’s all that more gratifying. Because you truly did it on your own. And isn’t that what being an entrepreneur is all about? With over 20 years of flight experience, Bettina Bathe is an aviator through and through. An accomplished children’s author, she is the creator of Violet the Pilot, and has self-published four books in the beloved children’s travel series, which she’s currently adapting for television. She currently lives in Calgary, Canada with her family. VioletThePilot.com ISSUE 3 . 2017

A GUIDE TO AVOIDING UNFULFILLMENT BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI

A

t any moment, each of us has a unique set of priorities, a hierarchy of values ranging from least to most important in our lives. When we set goals that are in alignment with our true highest priorities, we are inherently inspired to act and thus have the highest probability of fulfilling them. When we set goals that are in alignment with our lower values, we decrease the probability of their fulfillment. And when we set goals for or upon others that are aligned with their true highest priorities (or highest and most intrinsic values), they are then less likely to let us down.

Altitude // Inspire After working with hundreds of thousands of attendees and clients at the seminars I present at or in the consulting I do around the world, I have found that there are a series of common unrealistic expectations that undermine people’s overall level of fulfillment. These unrealistic expectations consistently lead to what I have initially observed and later coined the As, Bs, Cs, Ds, Es, Fs, and Gs of unfulfillment: Anger / Aggression Blame / Betrayal Criticism / Challenge Despair / Depression Exit / Escape Frustration / Futility Grouchiness / Grief

Any time you have an unrealistic expectation on yourself or others, your psychology and physiology will let you know by providing you with emotional feedback. In other words, your unrealistic expectations will result in your feelings/actions from this alphabet toward yourself or others.

The nine more common unrealistic expectations I have noticed are:

1. Unrealistic expectation for other people to live in some purely one-sided manner. Monopolar behavior is unsustainable and unrealistic to continuously expect. If I were to approach you and state that you are always supportive, never challenging, always nice and never mean, and so on, you would innately know that it is a subjectively biased distortion. The same goes with opposite generalizations (always mean and never nice, always cruel and never kind‌). But if I were to approach you and state that sometimes you are nice and sometimes you are mean, etc., you would be far more likely to believe it. This is because we have an intuitive, built-in thermostat that lets us know our own real and balanced nature. Because you have a unique set of values, when others support your highest values it brings out one side (nice), and when they challenge your highest values it brings out the opposite side (mean) of your complete and balanced nature. Expecting others to be one-sided is unrealistic, and will lead their minds/bodies to inwardly respond, or compensate with a neural feedback of things from the alphabet of unfulfillment. 2. Unrealistic expectation upon other people for them to live outside their (or our) highest values.

96

JETSETMAG.COM

Every decision people make is based upon what they believe at any particular moment will give them the greatest reward over risk. They will not necessarily live in accordance with your highest values unless they are either temporarily infatuated with you, or by doing so they believe they will receive some greater advantage in accordance with their own highest values. It is not so much that others betray you. It is more that you are projecting your highest values onto them and expecting them to live in accordance with your highest values more than their own. 3. Combination of unrealistic expectations #1 and #2. These two unrealistic expectations bring about a compound feedback response. Others will not live long-term in a one-sided manner or live according to your highest values. Others want to be loved for who they are, not necessarily what you unrealistically expect them to be. 4 Unrealistic expectation upon yourself to live in a purely onesided manner. It is certainly unrealistic to expect yourself to be always supportive and never challenging, always nice and never mean, always positive and never negative, etc. Again, when you perceive that your highest values are being supported, it will bring out one

Altitude // Inspire

“Setting realistic, objective expectations can set you free of a lot of unnecessary feelings and allow you to fulfill what you truly value most.”

7. Unrealistic expectation upon the collective society to live inside your own highest values. To expect the entire society around you to live in your highest values is delusional. With everyone having a unique set of values, to expect others to live in accordance with your highest value is certainly unrealistic. Others can only make decisions according to their own highest values and not yours. side of you (nice), and when you perceive your highest values are being challenged or threatened, it will bring out the other side of you (mean). 5. Unrealistic expectation upon yourself to live outside your own highest values and inside other’s highest values. Only during times of infatuation with others can you temporarily attempt to live in accordance with their highest values, or when you believe that doing so will provide you more advantages over disadvantages to your highest values. As Emerson stated, “envy is ignorance and imitation is suicide.”

98

6. Unrealistic expectation upon the collective society to live in a purely one-sided manner. Society is composed of a super culture of counter cultures giving rise to collective supportive-cooperative-agreeing-nice and challenging-competitive-disagreeing-mean behaviors. We as a collective society require both support and challenge to maximally adapt, evolve, and grow. Over-support can make us juvenile dependents and over-challenge can make us precocious independents. Both behaviors are required for our overall stability and psychological infrastructure. JETSETMAG.COM

8. Unrealistic expectation upon mechanical objects to function in a one-sided manner. To expect your mechanical devices to support you without challenging you would also be unrealistic. Phones can set you free and at the same time can constrain you to your office. Cars provide you free mobility but add to traffic jams that limit your mobility.

9. Unrealistic expectation upon mechanical objects to live inside your own highest values. To expect current machines to read your mind and only do what aligns with your highest values is certainly unrealistic.

Comparing your current reality, which is balanced and two sided, with one or more of these nine one-sided, unrealistic expectations will lead to unfulfillment and even depression. So the next time you are feeling unfulfilled, review the above list and see which one or more of them just might be underlying your current feelings of dissatisfaction. Setting realistic, objective expectations can set you free of a lot of unnecessary feelings and allow you to fulfill what you truly value most. Just remember to be realistic. DYNAMIC BLONDE BY TY FAHLMAN AND TARA HITCHCOCK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF VESPA

harlize Theron doesn’t play. Her latest film, Atomic Blonde (out July 28), only further lays stake to her claim as the most badass actress in Hollywood. In the picture, Theron kicks ass on a level usually only seen by the most hardened, venerated, (and, yes, testosteronefueled) action heroes in cinematic history. Her MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton is like a female Jason Bourne, dispatching her foes with dazzling precision and unflinching brutality, implementing her hands, feet, and an array of weapons or whatever other tools are within arm’s reach. By the time the credits roll, you realize that this is one of the great action heroes of recent memory...she just happens to be female.

“I think it’s about time that women get a fair shot in all that matters,” Theron tells Jetset while in Berlin amidst a whirlwind press tour for the film. It would seem that Blonde could not come at a more opportune time, as women have irrefutably been dominating the box office as of late. Beauty and the Beast is the biggest film of the year, Wonder Woman is the biggest film of the summer (showing better legs than any superhero movie in over 15 years), and the last two Star Wars movies were each anchored by strong female protagonists and completely obliterated box office records. Meanwhile, newfound action heroines like Theron, Scarlett Johansson, and Angelina Jolie are becoming more consistent draws than most of their male counterparts. We could be witnessing the precipice of a long-overdue, female-led renaissance in cinema. “She’s just as good as a man,” Theron says about her character. “You can take this story and you can flip it and it works exactly the same way.” In one of many standout action scenes from Atomic Blonde, Theron breathlessly slams an attacker onto a collapsible wooden table. The scene required her to master 30 intricate moves of choreography, and the crew to constantly replace the myriad pieces of furnature she kept destroying during the confrontation. Take after take, they watched in amazement until, as director David Leitch says, “[we were] down to our last table.” Leitch (who, off the buzz from Blonde, is currently shooting next summer’s massive tentpole Deadpool 2) goes on to say that “[Theron is] very fluid and precise, understanding just how and where to land for maximum impact on camera.” But Theron has been making maximum impact for decades. Growing up in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid, she found performance at a young age to escape a somewhat tumultuous childhood. She began ballet dancing and then modeling (logical, considering her transcendent beauty), and at age 16 she was awarded a one-year modeling contract. The contract allowed her to travel Europe, before moving to the US where she studied dancing and, eventually transitioned into acting. As story has it, while she was living alone in Los Angeles trying to break into the film industry, a 19-year-old Theron got into a heated dispute with a teller who wouldn’t cash a check so she could pay her rent, and the argument was overheard by a talent agent. Intrigued by Theron’s fiery passion, the agent handed her his card. ISSUE 3 . 2017

Altitude // Cover Feature Two years later, she was appearing in films. Throughout the ‘90s and early 2000s, Theron acted in over a dozen movies — some great (Cider House Rules), others not so much (Reindeer Games) — but most of the press clippings focused more on her beauty than her talent. Then came her revelatory performance as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s Monster. The passion project (which Theron was also a producer on) gave the actress an opportunity to truly demonstrate what she was capable of. As a result, Roger Ebert hailed her work as “one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema,” and Theron would take home almost every conceivable acting award for the film, including the Oscar for Best Actress, a first for a South African. Theron would go on to deliver strong performances in films both large (Hancock) and small (The Burning Plain). Two years after Monster, she received her second Best Actress nomination for her stirring work in North Country and begun regularly producing films. By the time she reached her self-described “Bitch Period,” Theron

According to Leitch, Theron worked hand-in-hand with the stunt team to learn advanced movements, develop choreography, and conceptualize the stunning, raw fight scenes in the film. Her conditioning, skill, and tenacity meant that Leitch didn’t have to “cheat” the audience with effects or editing as is often the case in today’s studio action pictures. He was able to do longer takes, and complex, intricate moves like the aforementioned bit with the table. And by the time cameras rolled, Theron was in near-superhuman shape. “Your body gets to a place where you’re actually functioning on such a high level that you recover a lot faster than you would if you were not that fit,” she says, citing an incident where one day the pain was so unbearable she could barely sit, while the next day she felt fine. When you watch the film, the result is something viscerally more impactful than what you’re used to seeing in the CGI-stuffed action pictures of recent memory. “I just saw an incredible amount of potential in exploring her through this journey,” Theron says. Every single shot you see of Theron fighting is really her, and by the end,

had become one of the most talented, respected, and powerful actors on the planet. The aforementioned epoch is what the actress has playfully dubbed her trio of strong, uncompromising, and somewhat unlikable characters in films Young Adult, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Prometheus. All three films (as well as the subsequent Mad Max: Fury Road) are tremendous showcases of the full extent of Theron’s power, mastery, and range. The same can be said about Atomic Blonde. To prepare for the role, Theron trained rigorously for up to five hours a day for three months, pushing her body to its maximum capability. Fortuitously, her ballet training from all those years prior would come in to play, and Leitch — a respected stunt performer himself with over 50 credits to his name — was so impressed by Theron’s veracity and devotion that he began to expand the fight choreography and tailor elaborate scenes to her awesome capabilities. “She has exceptional athletic ability,” he says, “realizing that it would be a wasted opportunity not to capitalize on [it], I modified the fight choreography and the directives to our stunt team.” His primary imperative was simple. “Go bigger.” She can handle it. JETSETMAG.COM

because you’re actually watching her in these masterful scenes, you feel like you are experiencing everything the character endures right along side her. “It was important for me to show a lot of what this woman goes through,” she says. Over the film’s 115-minute running time, Theron’s character gets bloodied and bruised and beat up in a way we are not necessarily used to seeing. But she goes on to say: “I think the physical brutality that she experiences and the marks left on her face and on her body is very much the empathy of her.” Theron describes the film as “brave,” “refreshing,” “provocative,” “thought-provoking,” and “at moments, uncomfortable.” All are accurate characterizations. It is truly an experience that leaves the viewer shaken, but nevertheless deeply entertained. In a summer with a surprising amount of great movies, it is easily one of the better action pictures of recent memory largely because of Theron’s performance and its artful, balletic, and unflinching action. But for the actress, what really attracted her was always something deeper than how kick-ass the fight scenes felt. “[It’s] not just the physical stuff but...her emotional journey,” she says. “There’s something about her that she has to win.” One might say the same about Theron.

RICH FRONING’S HEART BEATS FOR DISPLACED YOUTH BY LOU RAIOLA AND BRANDON STEPHENSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHASE LAUER

W

ithout a doubt, Rich Froning appears to be Superman. If you are unfamiliar, Froning is the four-time CrossFit Games Fittest Man on Earth individual champion, two-time Affiliate Cup team champion, and a living legend in the global CrossFit community. With his unrelenting, mind-blowing toughness and his insane work capacity, Froning puts together competition performances that inspire. But in reality, Froning is a true superhero to the youth of Mustard Seed Ranch, a children’s home serving those ages five to seventeen who have experienced upbringings of abuse, neglect, and loneliness. The soft-spoken, devoted man of faith is also the father of two young adopted children and a loyal friend to the community of Cookeville, Tennessee, where he was raised. Promises of fame and fortune haven’t tempted him away from his home, and he gives back to it whenever he can.

106

JETSETMAG.COM

Froning first discovered Crossfit in 2009, when the sport was still in its infancy. Broadly defined, Crossfit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. Since its inception, the sport has grown rapidly, and with its growth, Froning has soared. His first appearance at the Crossfit games in 2010 resulted in a second-place finish, narrowly missing first only due to a workout movement he hadn’t mastered yet. The drama surrounding his finish fueled a fire in him and those watching, leading to a four-year reign as Fittest on Earth and hundreds of thousands of fans. In a way, he was the sport’s first superstar, and through it all, his humble nature and kind heart have defined who he is as a competitor, teammate, and star. His endorsements — from Reebok to Advocare to Rogue — have grown but Froning remains the same level-headed champion. Even after his retirement from individual competition in 2014, his success continued, as his team, Crossfit Mayhem Freedom, won the Affiliate Cup Championship two years in a row at the Crossfit Games. But Froning’s success has never deviated him from his goals. Anyone from Cookeville will likely describe Froning the same way: “He’s just Rich.” His presence doesn’t elicit cries of greatness or adulation, rather a smile and a wave. He has been in his community forever; he’s a Cookeville High and Tennessee Tech graduate, and his wife, Hillary, is a kind, genuine small business owner. They are both community anchors with a great love for their hometown. That spirit led to the founding of Rich Froning’s Mayhem for Mustard Seed Ranch, a competition he hosts annually to benefit the children of Mustard Seed Ranch. Life at Mustard Seed Ranch is communal, with children living in a home with a set of live-in house

parents, who become Mom and Dad. These parents take the kids to school, soccer practice, dance recitals, doctor’s appointments, and so much more. They experience life alongside these kids — joy and pain, victory and loss — and help equip them with life skills they desperately need, teaching grace, mercy, and the redemptive power of love. Children at the ranch get the opportunity to work with their hands: feeding the cattle and pigs, tending the horses, and making crafts in the woodworking shop. This ownership helps the kids claim Mustard Seed Ranch as their own, learning responsibility and duty in the process. The Froning family realizes that their own adopted children could have easily ended up in need of a refuge like Mustard Seed Ranch, which has only reinforced their commitment to the families there. As the Crossfit games approach again for 2017, Froning remains a pillar in his sport, his community, and his family. An immaculate champion for both the fitness-minded and children in need...a superhero for all. ISSUE 3 . 2017

magine owning a home at a world-class racetrack. If you’re an adrenaline junkie such as myself, there is no greater dream. Now imagine that place was not just your run-of-the-mill racetrack, but the largest and most unique on earth. That’s exactly what you have with Spring Mountain Motor Resort & Country Club. After a recent visit, it is easy to see why Spring Mountain has a reputation as one of the best private racing clubs in the world. A performance paradise for the discerning racer or entry-level enthusiast, this stateof-the-art motorsport resort and thriving retirement/vacation home community offers something for everyone with a plethora of heartpumping activities, luxury amenities, and innovative track offerings that distinguish it from all other racing locales.

Lake Spring Mountain

Finish Line

Gracefully situated on over 300 acres of cascading Nevada landscape — just a short drive from the excitement of thriving downtown Las Vegas — Spring Mountain holds the record for “longest track in North America” with an impressive 6.1 miles of combined road course. Even more impressive, future developments will add an additional 500 acres to the property and expand the track to a length of over 15 miles, thus surpassing the infamous Nürburgring as the world’s longest racetrack. The racing circuit offers more than 50 different track configurations, with fast corners, a variety of elevation changes, and long straights further adding to the thrill of the resort’s famous track replicas (including the Watkins Glen “Bus Stop” and Laguna Seca’s “Corkscrew,” to name a few). The challenging road course and its unprecedented variety of configurations are the reason why one major manufacturer offers to send its customers to the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School to learn how to drive their new Corvettes, and why the Cadillac V-Performance Academy is proud to call Spring Mountain home. Spring Mountain also provides hands-on training in a variety of vehicles including one of today’s hottest (and one of my personal favorite) race cars, the Wolf GB08. As an exclusive dealer for championship Italian Sport Prototype manufacturer Wolf Racing Cars, Spring Mountain sells a complete range of Wolf models, including the record-setting GB08SM. Wolf designed this breathtaking model directly in tandem with Spring Mountain and it’s tailored specifically for the challenges of North American road courses. The

Course Racing

result is something that provides what is perhaps one of the closest experiences to actually getting behind the wheel of an F1 car. The resort is an authorized Radical dealer as well, and has both the SR3 and high-powered SR8 models on-hand for purchase. In a nice touch, buyers gain access to their entire team of expert technicians who can keep your Wolf or Radical in race-ready condition, so all you need to do is Arrive and Drive. Beyond racing, membership at Club Spring Mountain grants access to an assortment of five-star amenities and accommodations. Activities on-site include the exhilarating new Jetpack America experience at Lake Spring Mountain’s 18 million-gallon freshwater reservoir and a full-service spa. The club’s luxury trackside condominiums, private garages, and immaculate, 8,000 square-foot clubhouse are all impressive, to say the least, and there are a number of attractive real estate investment opportunities to be found at Spring Mountain Estates, with new developments breaking ground every day and a handful of stunning residential homes already completed. Having visited many of the world’s most esteemed racetracks and members-only clubs, I must say that few experiences compare to spending a day (or two, or three) at Spring Mountain Motor Resort & Country Club. The generous staff, extremely well-organized operations, and the extensive selection of both racing and non-racing activities make it a unique and exciting opportunity for both driving enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike. KNOWS YACHTS. This fact is evidenced by a client list that reads like a “Who’s Who” of the world’s most highly successful individuals. Raised by a yacht broker father, Wood lived on a boat for several years and sold his first one at 18 years old. Since launching his company in 1989, Merle Wood & Associates has surpassed expectations, amassing well over $30 billion in yacht deals to date, and has been a top dealproducing company for over 25 years. Leading a team of astute sales professionals, CEO Wood is a master of expertly navigating the yachting industry. His philosophy is simple: “It is important to sell a yacht knowing the client is going to be happy with it, so that he or she will return to me to purchase their next boat and

recommend their friends.” Wood learned two important adages at a young age from two very influential clients that are at the foundation of his philosophy and focus – “The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten,” and, “It’s not what it costs to buy, but what it costs to sell that establishes true cost.” Wood uses these two philosophies to guide each client to the very best yacht for their personal requirements. Merle Wood largely attributes his company’s great success to the strength of the client relationships he and his team work to establish and maintain, which result in substantial repeat and referral business. “Give us a call,” he says. “Our yachts are showcased in ports all around the world, and many will be on display in yacht shows throughout the year.”

Florida’s Gilchrist Club By John DePalma

N

120

estled amongst picturesque white pine and palmetto lies 27,000 pristine acres of private ground in North Central Florida called The Gilchrist Club. “The Club,” as it is known to its members, offers an unparalleled escape from the hustle and bustle of the everyday grind. It’s a place where members partake in some of the finest quail hunting to be found in North America – just like it was in the “good old days.” In addition to memorable hunting experiences, Gilchrist offers fine dining, a state-of-the-art conference center, luxurious accommodations, and impeccable customer service, making it one of the premier getaway destinations in all of Florida. JETSETMAG.COM

Labrador Retrievers flush these marvels-of-flight (and will even deliver the birds right to your hand). If (like our editors) you’ve never hunted quail, their flushing antics may best be described as a fighter jet bursting to flight underfoot, but doing so without your knowledge. Needless to say, the tiny winged masters provide little room for error to those in pursuit with a shotgun. Prepare for the challenge of a lifetime. In addition to quail, members can hunt whitetail deer, wild pig, Osceola turkey, and yes, even gators. You can fish for bass and crappie in Lake Suwannee and popular species like redfish, trout, and flounder at the mouth of the river with the same name. Offshore sportfish are attainable via help from The Club’s astute guides, and you can even don snorkel gear and hunt for delicious scallops at your leisure. On the latter subject, The Club’s executive chef prepares a hearty breakfast at the beginning of every day and a sumptuous lunch for a mid-day break, but dinner is where the staff really shines.

Hunting is something that we seldom feature in Jetset, so when we showcase a hunting experience, you know it’s going to be a good one, and there are few better places in America to hunt than Gilchrist. The Club’s roughly 85 members enjoy the most stunning cover imaginable while in hot pursuit of their evasive game. Earlier this year, a few unabashedly city slicker Jetset editors were invited down to Florida to partake in all that The Club has to offer. That meant fine cuisine, Southern hospitality, and experiencing life as it is known to the club’s members: activities like wild pig hunting, cracking at sporting clays (basically clay birds on steroids you shoot with a shotgun), tossing tomahawks, fishing for bass and crappie, and of course, the best quail hunting known to man. You see, bobwhite quail are truly an American sporting bird, and hunters travel to Gilchrist from across the globe to chase these darling game fowl. Out in the pristine wilderness, business-minded pointing dogs cover terrain to track and hold quail, while spirited

The team adroitly infuses fresh ingredients and secret recipes with meats and seafoods from the region and beyond to create a truly exquisite feast after a day of authentic outdoor adventure. One of the guiding principles they adhere to at The Club is, “Time is not the master of the game, you are,” and across the board it appears as though the staff always strives to ensure they are doing as much as possible to service their members and guests. The prevailing axiom is that at The Gilchrist Club, “members are family,” which in turn makes it quite hard to leave. Luckily, Gilchrist currently has a few select, private memberships still available. Even better, while The Club is accessible via the Orlando, Tampa, and Gainesville commercial airports, if you’re flying private, they will make special accommodations for you to land at a private strip only eight miles from The Club. Now that’s hunting in style. For more information on private memberships, call (352) 4637070 or visit GilchristClub.com. ISSUE 3 . 2017

West Creek Ranch

The most significant land and estate property in the American West East of Moab, north of Telluride and west of Aspen lie the majestic red canyons formed by the Dolores River as it winds its way up the Colorado border with Utah. One of the world’s most stunning landscapes, it would take none other than the founder of The Discovery Channel, John Hendricks, to create a home among the red rock canyon country of Gateway— a unique destination where humanity can pause and contemplate its relationship with nature. This is a place where the planet truly opens up to tell its epic geologic story. Residence The main residence features more than 22,000 square feet of exquisite indoor living space that includes eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms on four levels, in addition to a Creekside Guest House and cabin with helipad. he jewel of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle has become one of the most desirable cities to live in all of North America. The lush green foliage, bustling metropolis, incredible restaurants, art, culture, and no state income tax are just of a few of the reasons so many people are flocking to the Pacific Northwest for a taste of the Seattle lifestyle. (Check out our profile on Page 46 for more on how Seattle is one of America’s premier cities.) The Emerald City’s economy is thriving, and as a result, real estate prices have just reached an all-time high. Because of this recent influx of interest, the market has reached astounding new levels of value. Throughout Seattle and its affluent suburbs, homes are hitting the market and selling at record pace. In fact, a recent survey released on June 23 found that Seattle was tied with Denver for the lowest number of available homes for sale, at .98 months of inventory. That means that if no new homes went up for sale, every single available home on the market would be gone in less than a month! With a market this fiercely competitive, buyers need someone they can trust to navigate the treacherous waters. That’s where Scott Wasner comes in. With over two decades of experience in sales and JETSETMAG.COM
