Jeff Koons’ ‘Rabbit’
Following stints at the Guggenheim Bilbao, Tate Modern and Château de Versailles, Jeff Koons’ playful rabbit sculpture has become the most expensive work by a living artist ever to sell at auction. Measuring just over 3 feet tall, the stainless-steel figure sold for more than $91 million at Christie’s New York, smashing auction estimates. The auction house initially estimated that Koons’ faceless “Rabbit” would sell for between $50 and $70 million. After more than 10 minutes’ of rabid bidding, the winner came in at $80 million which — including auctioneer’s fees — triggered a final sale price of $91,075,000.

The Valhalla and Vanquish Vision Concept represent Aston’s bold outlook for automobility by David Haraldsen
a
32
ston Martin is no stranger to innovation. The revered British nameplate has been a driving force behind the hypercar movement, leading the charge in high-performance hybridization, while simultaneously redefining what it means to be a technologically advanced luxury automotive manufacturer. Case in point: Aston Martin debuted two new mid-engine supercars at 2019’s prestigious Geneva Motor Show. Originally code named “AM-RB 003,” the new Valhalla (or “Son of Valkyrie,” as some affectionately refer to it) is the latest model in an impressive line of groundbreaking designs from the Aston Martin brand. The new fourwheel-drive Valhalla is powered by a hybrid twin turbo-charged V6 and electric motor powertrain configuration, a significant departure from the Valkyrie’s V12 setup. It’s a direct competitor to the Ferraris and McLarens of today and aims to be the world’s absolute best hypercar. On the inside, a wealth of new tech innovations provides a unique driving experience that’s certainly not for the faint of heart. With more space than its predecessor, Valhalla’s cutting-edge interior features apex ergonomics (for perfect positioning) developed almost entirely from ultra-lightweight 3D-printed carbon. Cameras, both side and rear, take the place of traditional mirrors (a necessity with no rear window), while meticulously integrated touch-sensitive buttons and displays are used throughout the cabin. Valhalla’s exterior offers a fascinating glimpse of the future of automotive aerodynamics. Building on lessons learned from the JETSETMAG.COM
brand’s highly successful Formula 1 team, no stone has been left unturned in the development of Aston’s latest unveiling. Even the headlights on this impressive machine have been painstakingly engineered for weight reduction. Massive diffuser “tunnels” run parallel beneath the vehicle for substantially increased aero, while the front lip splitter features intricate end curves that create a literal vortex of strategic airflow to the tires and undercarriage. And in an envelope-pushing automotive industry first, Valhalla’s remarkable NASA-validated “FlexFoil” technology allows the carbon spoiler to bend as needed for maximum downforce. Given its over-the-top futuristic design, Valhalla will likely enter the market at a price point north of a million dollars, which is why Aston Martin has coincided the launch of its groundbreaking supercar with a more consumer-friendly version of the popular Vanquish model. The new Vanquish Vision Concept doesn’t stray far from its high-performance counterpart either. With a number of innovations duplicated from Valkyrie, the Vanquish Vision Concept is Aston’s first mainstream mid-engine vehicle that’s essentially a “daily driver” version of the Valhalla. Featuring a carbon/aluminum tub, the same hybrid twin turbo-charged V6 as Valhalla (albeit a slightly more modest tuning), and a low-slung rear end, the newest concept also takes design queues from both the Valkyrie and DBS lines. Although still just a concept, the Vanquish Vision is slated to hit showroom floors in the next few years. We’ll be waiting... as patiently as we can.
“Aston Martin really is on a relentless path of reinventing itself and pushing to expand its product portfolio. - David King, Vice President and Chief Special Operations Officer

The Latest Luxury Timepieces By Si Si Penaloza
CHANEL Première Velours Timepiece As Coco Chanel once said: “Black has it all.” How strikingly apt in describing this issue’s spotlight on noteworthy new timepieces. An instant ingenue at Baselworld, the Chanel Première collection welcomed its newest member, Première Velours. A spellbinding balance between horology and high jewelry, the watch features an 18-carat yellow gold case with a velvet smooth strap. This haute modern reinvention of the Première classic, created in 1987, is also offered with 116 brilliant-cut diamonds set on a dial the size of a postage stamp. Talk about a tight and tidy cabinet.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium
BULGARI Serpenti Tubogas
While most Top Gun editions already feature a dark case and dial, the new Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium introduces black pushers and crown as opposed to the previous metallic finish. Moreover, the hands are black-coated resulting in a hypnotic, subtle shimmer. Sub-dials and the day-date wheels are also fully black. IWC’s Pilot concept has never been so bold. Complementing the look is a black rubber strap with a distinctive textile inlay.
Renowned for its iconic Serpenti watch, Bulgari continues to evolve as a movable feast of innovation and elegance. The Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas — the seducer snake— succinctly expresses the Roman jeweler’s repertoire of creativity and technical virtuosity. The serpent is portrayed as a shapeshifting creature of hypnotic sensuality, as well as a symbol of immortality. Who wouldn’t want a little eternal life in their timepiece collection? Though born in gold, the watch is meant to be enjoyed on any occasion.
JAEGER-LECOULTRE Rendez-Vous Day & Night
GIRARD-PERREGAUX Cat’s Eye
ULYSSE NARDIN Marine Mega Yacht
Gems continue to inspire our favorite watchmakers this year. The Rendez-Vous has quickly become one of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s flagship women’s offerings. Solitaire-setting techniques used in ornamental jewelry allow more light to ignite the diamonds’ clarity, setting this watch apart vis-à-vis 186 diamonds weighing a total of 3.52 cts. You’ll be waving to the waitstaff in style with this one.
Ovals are a rare pleasure in watch design, especially when oriented horizontally. Exquisite and feminine, this Cat’s Eye edition gives haute horlogerie a rather ravishing feline twist. Gem-setting takes center stage here; the elegance lies in its superb size and stance on the wrist. Girard-Perregaux continues to seduce its female clientele with superior substance and styling.
An unabashed grand gesture to the high roller’s aquatic life, this watch was built with the stalwart stance of a multimillion catamaran bridge. The 44mm solid platinum timepiece features a blue enamel dial that hints at a yacht bow’s shape, while the tourbillon’s cage takes the form of a propeller. The scene stealer? A spherical moonphase detailed with tiny craters, sparking the illusion of a lunar surface.

lying private is both luxurious and exclusive, making private jet travel the preferred choice among executives and celebrities. Brave new business models have risen to meet the increasing demand of a new generation of tech savvy leisure travelers who crave the perks of flying private, without the burden of ownership costs, or heavy upfront membership dues. Brokers access a variety of operators to create a “floating fleet”, answering only to their clients, leveraging buying power to offer the best deals. A common filter that private jet junkies vet is the aircraft’s age. Those in the know request a jet that’s less than five years old. Truly unique in the industry, Red Label by Flexjet offers fractional owners the most modern aircraft in the industry, flight crews dedicated to a single, specific aircraft and more than 25 artisan cabin designs spread across the Red Label fleet. The industry’s most modern fleet: The average age of aircraft is six years, with new aircraft arriving monthly. The Red Label fleet is made up of the Embraer Legacy 450, Bombardier Challenger 350, Gulfstream G450 and G650 and the Bombardier Global Express largecabin long-range aircraft. Red Label simulates a private flying experience as empowering as owning one’s own aircraft, bridging the gap between traditional fractional ownership and wholeaircraft ownership. ISSUE 3 . 2019

XOJET, which operates a fleet of super-midsize private jets and has a $100 million dollar charter brokerage, continues to build its luxury lifestyle partnerships, adding The Resort at Paws Up as its newest brand partner. Recruiting the world’s foremost wine experts, including those from Marchesi Antinori, Rothschild (Lafite), Ca’ del Bosco and Artemis Domaines, gives VistaJet a definitive edge in serving discerning clientele. By tasting on the ground and in the sky, experts revealed how taste and smell are the senses most affected by atmosphere in a pressurized cabin; fruit flavors are diminished, while bitterness and spiciness are largely unaffected. VistaJet provides bespoke access to the world’s best winemakers and wine clubs through the VistaJet Chairman’s Office. The Wine Tours include a three-day experience hosted by Marchesi Antinori, to enjoy a dinner with the family at Palazzo Antinori, tasting wines from their private collections, before visiting their historic vineyards in Tuscany and Umbria by helicopter and staying in the family estates’ exclusive guest houses. Can’t quite make it to Italy? ver buy a product online from a retailer you’ve never purchased from and suddenly you’re bombarded with daily emails trying to get you to buy more? How about shopping at a store and you get the high-pressure sales pitch? How did it make you feel? Most would say aggressive sales approaches such as these are immediate turnoffs. The number of times this kind of technique drives off prospective customers far outweighs the few times it actually works. While it seems like the dangers of aggressive selling are obvious, it can be easier today than one might think to push too far and lose prospects as well as loyal customers.

Altitude // Industry Now that customers have access to a vast amount of information on the Internet, they are relying less and less on salespeople. According to MineWhat.com, 81 percent of shoppers conduct online research before buying. So if they do their research first before visiting a store, buyers often don’t want or need a sales pitch that tells them what they already know. If a salesperson ignores this fact and insists on delivering scripted information anyway, they risk insulting their prospect’s intelligence, wasting their time and distracting them from their intended purchase. All causes for a prospect to walk away from a sale. While many business-to-customer products no longer require traditional pitches, many business-to-business products and services still call for a good sales presentation. It’s important in this case to carefully determine how much information to share. Share too much
Social media is another area where overly aggressive selling can turn customers and prospects away from your brand. The general rule is 80/20: 80 percent of your content should interest your audience and engage them in conversations and 20 percent of your content can promote your brand. Social sites like Facebook and Twitter are where people want to engage with each other and build relationships. If they like or follow a brand’s social media pages and all they get out of it is a continuous, aggressive sales pitch, the customer will disconnect from the brand. When brands start to see a decrease in likes, shares and comments, it can be a sign they’re overselling and a review of their social strategy is needed. Email is another point of customer interaction that must be protected. A customer or prospect’s inbox is their personal territory and should be respected by brands. Too many emails, too often, not

information and one comes off as insecure and needy. Too many details can overwhelm a prospect—immobilizing them and making it impossible for them to make a decision. An overabundance of information can also overshadow the great ideas, benefits or features that by themselves could make the sale. Talk too much about all the extras a product has and the customer could begin to doubt they need it. Bells and whistles are fine for some prospects, but for many they can be intimidating and seen as added luxuries they shouldn’t be purchasing. Ever encounter a product that didn’t live up to the hype? Brands oversell all the time. They overpromise and under-deliver, disappointing customers and sending them running for the competition. Promoting a product or service that doesn’t live up to what the company is promoting results in customer distrust of that product, as well as the entire brand. JETSETMAG.COM
only creates white noise which leads to emails being immediately discarded, but it also frustrates and even angers people. Segmenting mailing lists and sending targeted, personalized emails based on customers’ interests can be a more effective approach that gets results. Provide them with content that helps them enjoy their product more, not just sales pitches geared toward getting them to purchase again. Overly aggressive sales techniques can overshadow what’s most important — meeting the customer’s needs. They can also send the message that the product, service or brand being sold is weak and needs to be proven with words and overbearing sales methods. Let a product speak for itself, at least in part. Or better still, let loyal customers speak for it with glowing reviews. When in doubt, take the lead from the customer, provide only information they will value, then support them after the sale and pave the way toward future sales opportunities.

(UNLESS YOU WERE BORN TO RICH PARENTS)
By Ken McElroy

t
here are lots of ways to financial freedom. The fastest and easiest is to be born to rich parents. According to economists, about 60 percent of the wealth in America now comes through inheritance. But if you, like me, weren’t lucky enough to be born to rich parents (or find some to adopt you), don’t despair. We “60-Percenters” have other methods to financial freedom. We can climb (or should I say “claw”) our way up the corporate ladder, invest in stocks or bonds or mutual funds, write a bestselling novel or win the lottery. ISSUE 31 . 2019 2018
59
Altitude // Estates But earning a top executive position in a corporation can take a long time. Stocks can be volatile. Bonds, annuities and mutual funds often offer less than satisfactory returns. Writing a novel is hard work and only a few make The New York Times bestselling lists. And the lottery — well, your odds of striking it big are 1,800 times less than being killed by lightning strike. Each “wealth stream” has advantages over the others. (Lottery tickets are cheap.) But none has a better track record than real estate, especially multi-unit rental properties. Since 1940, apartment communities, like homes, have appreciated in value about six percent a year. Monthly rental rates have appreciated about nine percent a year. Adjusted for inflation, rents have increased nearly five-fold, from an average of about $250 a month to a whopping $1,200.
60
This appreciation in property values and rent means that you have a built-in hedge against inflation, plus some. Although stocks prices have increased faster in value than homes and rents (about 10 percent a year since the 1930s), stocks lack cash flow (like the profit from monthly rent checks). In fact, when compared side-by-side, real estate outperforms stocks by a wide margin. I’ll prove it to you. Let’s begin with two investors, each of whom has $22,000 to invest. One puts his money into stocks, which, as I’ve noted earlier, increases an average of 10 percent per year. At the end of the first year, that initial investment of $22,000 (subtracting $100 for the cost of initially placing the order to purchase the stocks through an online investment site), grows to $24,090 — a $2,190 increase. At the end of ten years (interest is compounded from year to year), the total investment grows to $56,803 — a 158 percent return on investment (ROI = [gain from investment – cost of investment] ÷ cost of investment). JETSETMAG.COM
That’s a pretty good ROI. But watch what happens when the other investor puts her money into real estate. She purchases a $100,000 rental property. Two thousand dollars goes into closing costs, and the remaining $20,000 goes to the down payment. Because property increases at an average rate of six percent per year, after one year, her investment is now worth $6,000 more (six percent x $100,000). That’s $3,810 more than the $2,190 increase for the other investor. But her gains do not stop there. The average national rental rate for a $100,000 unit is $1,000 per month (rates are generally one percent of property value). The monthly mortgage payment for a 30-year fixed-interest mortgage at six percent interest is about $480. According to industry standards, the average expenses for a unit like this are about $235 a month. This leaves a cash flow, or profit, of $275 per month. So this investor’s first year cash flow will be $3,300. She has earned $9,300 so far. But there’s more. The rent covers her mortgage payment, part of which pays off the principal. This creates equity for her. After the first year, the equity from principle is $982. So now we can add it all up. Her total net gain or profit in the first year is $10,282, nearly five times as much as the other stock investor, who earned $2,190. At the end of her first year, her total investment is now worth $30,282 ($20,000 down payment
+ $6,000 in appreciation + $3,300 in cash flow + $982 in principle equity), compared with $24,090 for the stock investor. Wow! But there’s even more. Because rent increases at a rate of about nine percent a year, her rental payments will continue to increase through the years, offering her another hedge against inflation and more profits, as inflation usually is less than four percent per year. The graph above summarizes what I’ve just discussed. At the end of the 10-year time period, the stock investor’s ROI is $56,803, or 158 percent, and the real estate investor’s ROI is a whopping $162,262, or 638 percent. So, if you owned just six small rental properties, you could become a millionaire in 10 years. With an investment strategy like this, who needs rich parents? The Truth About Bubble-nomics By Robert Kiyosaki
T
he stock market is reaching all-time highs and so is real estate in many parts of the country. The question is: Is this a good time to be investing? Are fools rushing in . . . or are smart investors getting out?
The biggest financial crisis in history is brewing, and, in my opinion, few people know about it. It is a crisis in our pension funds. There are two reasons why asset prices are high. One is because pension funds are desperately trying to make up for lost time. The other is that the Federal Reserve Bank keeps interest rates low and prints money when necessary. These factors blow both the stock market and the real estate market into massive bubbles. As I write this article, the stock market is hitting record highs — nearly twice the highs achieved before the 2008 crash. In the world of investing, there are two types of investors — pros and amateurs. The problem is that the vast number of amateurs have no idea who the pros are ... and who are the con men and women.

Rubber-Chicken Dinners A friend of mine, a long-time professional financial advisor — a CFP, or Certified Financial Planner, which is levels in education above the average financial planner — often goes to what he calls “rubber-chicken” dinners. His name is John MacGregor. He was telling me about a dinner he went to where he choked down the rubber chicken and waited for the presenter to address the group. Just after dessert, a trim and handsome man (tan, welldressed . . . and about 35 years old) took the stage. The speaker “wowed” the audience with stories and humor, as well as a few facts, charts and numbers. As soon as the speaker was finished, most of the audience rushed to the tables to sign up for an interview and portfolio evaluation. My friend John joined the crowd ... and went up to a table to make an appointment for a personal portfolio evaluation. JETSETMAG.COM

It was not long before the young woman realized John’s questions about the financial program she was proposing were more sophisticated than those of the average individuals she typically worked with. Exasperated, John asked if he could meet personally with the well-dressed and engaging speaker he had listened to at the rubberchicken dinner. John kept insisting and she kept avoiding John’s questions. In response to John’s increasing exasperation, the young woman finally admitted that “the speaker is not a financial advisor. He is a professional actor hired from a Hollywood talent agency. You may have seen him in the pizza commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.”
Stupid FAQ After writing Rich Dad Poor Dad, which over the past two decades has held its own as an international bestseller and was on The New York Times bestseller list for nearly seven years, many people thought I dispensed or sold investment advice. Untrue. I am an entrepreneur, educator and professional investor, investing for my own portfolio. I am not a financial planner like my friend John. Yet, no matter where I go, people come up to me and ask, “I have $100,000. What should I do with my money?”

My response is always the same. “If you do not know what to do with your money, don’t announce to the world, ‘I am an idiot with money.’ If you don’t know what to do with your money, there are literally billions of people who do. Their financial advice is, ‘Give me your money. I know what to do with your money. I’ll spend it for you.’” That is what people do at rubber-chicken dinners. They line up and hand over their money to total strangers, sales people and (sometimes) Hollywood actors. The problem with the financial planning industry is that most financial planners are salespeople, not rich people. The same is true for real estate brokers, stock brokers and insurance brokers. My rich dad often said, “The reason they are called “brokers” is because they are broker than you.” Warren Buffett says, “Never ask an insurance broker if you need more insurance. If you ask an insurance broker that question, the answer is always ‘Yes. You need more insurance.’” Warren Buffett should know. GEICO, one of the largest insurance companies in America, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. What Should You Do? I am a financial educator, an entrepreneur in financial education. I always advise, “Invest in financial investment courses before investing your hard-earned money.” That is the same advice my rich dad gave me

in 1973, the year I returned from Vietnam. My rich dad said, “I am an investor. I am not a teacher. Find a teacher, take courses, and then talk to me about investing.” Late one night, in 1973, I was channel surfing and saw an infomercial about investing in real estate. The program offered a free seminar, which I attended and then signed up for the three-day course. The three-day course cost me $385 — a fortune in 1973 — but that investment has made me a multimillionaire many times over. Today, I continue to attend two to three investment seminars each year. I take seminars on stocks, bonds, real estate, oil and precious metals. So, do most of my friends. Birds of a feather, as they say, do flock together . . . at investment seminars.
The Good News and the Bad News The good news is that the world economy is in a giant bubble, the biggest bubble in world history. The bad news is, the bubble is about to burst. A bursting bubble can be the best news for someone who invested, first, in their financial education before putting their money into an investment, the type often sold at a rubber-chicken dinner. In 2008, my friends and I knew the market was about to burst because foolish people were investing in real estate they could not afford. Many were using NINJA loans, No Income/No Job subprime loans, and buying their dream houses, houses they could not afford. When we saw fools rushing in, in 2008, my friends and I sat back and waited. In 2009, after both the real estate market and stock market crashed, we began investing.
Today’s world is all about deciphering fact from fiction... and truth from lies. Robert Kiyosaki’s position: Fight fake with facts. As a global advocate for financial education, he believes that real education starts with an open mind.

As the old saying goes: “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” In 2019, we are in such a time. As I write, the U.S. economy is red hot ... and fools are rushing in. Please do not be one of the fools. Since I sell financial education, I suggest investing in your financial education and getting ready for the crash and fools who start rushing out.
Real Financial Education I’ll close with a final bit of real financial education. There are two types of financial bubbles. Today’s bubble is a bubble caused by debt. Ever since 2008, the world economy has been blown into the biggest debt bubble in world history. The second type of bubble is an economy that’s growing because businesses are growing. For example, Silicon Valley is in a bubble because Silicon Valley is where the Information Age blossomed. When the next bubble bursts, look for areas that will grow again and avoid areas that will need government handouts to survive. Seeking real financial education is a much smarter move than saying, “I have $100,000. Tell me what to do with my money...”
Best known as the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad — the #1 personal finance book of all time — Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world think about money. He is an entrepreneur, educator, and investor who believes that each of us has the power to makes changes in our lives, take control of our financial future, and live the rich life we deserve. With perspectives on money and investing that often contradict conventional wisdom, Robert has earned an international reputation for straight talk, irreverence, and courage and has become a passionate and outspoken advocate for financial education.

Remembering to Hustle With Purpose By Daymond John 68

I
begin my new book with a quote from the Dalai Lama. In it, he says his biggest surprise about humanity is that we sacrifice our health to make money, and then spend our money to take care of our health. He goes on to say that as a result, “Man does not live in the present or the future. He lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” It is powerful stuff, and it really opened my eyes to the cruel reality that many successful people face. We work so hard to build an empire that we sacrifice our lives and health to get there. Just look at Steve Jobs. Probably the most admired entrepreneur of the past century, anyone who’s read Walter Isaacson’s brilliant biography of him knows that he was notoriously obsessive and devoted to his work. The man often worked from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and would go without sleep altogether when he was locked into a groundbreaking project like the iPhone. He would demand things of his team that were deemed impossible, but somehow under his leadership, they found a way. As a result of his tireless efforts, he made Apple what it is today and left us with some of the most substantial innovations of our time...but he also wore himself down and died at the age of 56. Now as you may know, two years ago, I learned I had stage II thyroid cancer. Luckily after having surgery to remove the nodule on my neck, I am fine. But the incident put things into perspective for me. As anyone does when faced with their own mortality, I began to reflect. It took this giant wake-up call for me to realize that the reason I was put on this earth was to make life better for the people around me — not just the people I love and keep close, but the people all around me. So how do you change the world like Steve Jobs and still have time for your family or your health? Because if you think about it, time is the only thing we can’t get back in this world. Once we spend it, it’s gone, so you’ve got to make sure you’re investing it wisely. And whether we have a hundred dollars in the bank or a hundred million, we all get the same twenty-four hours a day. The key is learning how to put those hours to work for you so that you can make an impact while being as productive as possible.

Altitude // Shark Talk Every day I get up — before the sun, some mornings — and start grinding at my goals, hard. I go to sleep—stupid-late, most nights — still grinding. Because when I hear people say there isn’t time enough in the day to do everything they need to do, it gets me upset. Yeah, I get that it sometimes feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day, but the feeling only hits me when I’m not using those hours wisely. When I’m not efficient, organized, on it. But if I’m on top of my game, in tireless pursuit, there’s always time. And if it starts looking like the clock is about to run out on me, I’ll work even harder. Now I’ve seen some things, met all kinds of interesting, ridiculously successful people. I’ve hung around with world leaders and game-changers. I’m always learning from these people, and one of the things I’ve learned is that there is no secret formula for success. However, there are specific essential ingredients that are always in the mix. One common trait I notice in all the people I meet who are thriving and striving: every single one of them has got a killer work ethic. Seriously, they are up and at it each and every day, and they are at it hard. You could call it drive. You could call it determination. You could call it oomph, grit, or hustle. I call it rising and grinding. And in my latest book, Rise and Grind, l share a bunch of my day-to-day habits and routines to show how I make the best use of my 24/7. I also break down the rituals of some of the world’s most successful people, from all walks of life — people
who inspire me, who amaze me, who push me to be the very best I can be. I asked them what they do as soon as they get up in the morning, where they turn for inspiration, how they organize their days. I asked them some tougher questions, too — questions I’m asked almost every day by aspiring entrepreneurs who want to make something of themselves, and by corporate leaders who bring me in to motivate their employees and get them to start thinking outside the box. As a successful person yourself, I am sure you have your own set of rules and routines for maximizing productivity every day. I am sure you have your own specific guidelines for grinding. But my advice is never to forget that we grind to get and keep ahead, but that we also grind to make our world a better place for the people we love. For some of us, that might mean our world close to home. For others, we might keep a bigger picture in mind. At the very least, we always need to make time for our loved ones (and because we care about them, take the best possible care of our health) and be mindful of the impact we are leaving on the world. So keep grinding my friends...just make sure you’re doing it efficiently and never losing sight of what’s important. Daymond John’s latest book Rise and Grind: How to Out-Perform, Out-Work and Out-Hustle the Competition is available online and in bookstores everywhere.

HOW TO TRIUMPH OVER THE EXISTING PARADIGM BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI
T

o be a great leader, your first, foremost and most essential intention will be to spread and expand your inspiring mission, vision, message, ideas or principles among as many individuals as you intend, or is possible. Second would be to then structurally and strategically organize the emerging followers and members of your new movement and ideology. This will require that you let it flexibly evolve organically but not too rapidly. When you initiate a set or series of ideas and lodge them into the minds of a certain critical number of individuals, they will tend to form a certain degree of order among them, and out of this natural inner formation, something very valuable will organically emerge. Although followers can hesitate, especially at the beginning, to submit to the governance of an emerging leader, or at least a more inspired vision, persistence of your clear intent amongst these followers and members will cause your mission to expand, endure and transform. JETSETMAG.COM
“To be a great leader means that you are able to move individuals in the collective towards your intended chief aim or end. - Dr. Demartini
As a great leader it is wise and also essential to first propagate and publicly expound your new and inspiring ideas or principles on which your movement is founded. This work of propagating the mission, vision and message is to continue for a certain time and is to be directed from you, the leader, or at least from your one central directing source. When your inspiring ideas have gradually won over a sufficient number of individuals, your new social collective will then need to be carefully sifted for the purpose of selecting those who have ability in secondary leadership and putting their ability and participation to the test. If you are primarily a great master of theory, you may not also be a great organizer of individuals. So you, as a leader, are to take and appreciate individuals as they are, and get to truly know them and their highest values and communicate your emerging mission and vision accordingly and congruently. You are not to have too high (infatuated) or too low (resentful) of an estimate of their human nature or become overly altruistic or narcissistic in your approach. ISSUE 31 . 2019
73
Altitude // Inspire You would be rare if you were a great theorist, and, at the same time, a great leader and organizer, though. To be a great leader means that you are able to move individuals in the collective towards your intended chief aim or end. Your gift of formulating abstract ideas has little to do with your capacity for practical leadership and your noblest conceptions of human understanding remain without purpose or value if you, as the leader, cannot move your collective individuals towards them in an organized manner. As a great leader, you are to fix your aim at solving that which collective human beings struggle with, for without pursuing a solution to a great humanitarian problem and cause, no collective and catalytic involvement can or will emerge or be sustained. But when you demonstrate the uniquely combined abilities of theorist, organizer and leader, and you unite them as a truly rare individual towards a great cause that serves, then you demonstrate the rarest phenomenon on this earth. It is that union which produces within you a great human being and true and great leader. It is wise to gradually and organically gather together a small nucleus of individuals who appreciate your new mission and ideas and become inspired by them. When your inspired movement has gathered growing numbers of individuals, you are to then divide this collective into two groups: namely, followers and members. It is your task as the propagating leader and missionary to recruit the followers and it is the task of the organizer (whether you or another) to select the members. The majority of human beings are less than inspired and more socially timid and often subordinate to some traditional collective through conformity. To propagate a new inspiring idea, you, the leader, are to seek untiringly to acquire new followers for your movement, whereas the organizer (you or another) must diligently look out for the greatest individuals among such followers, so that these individuals may be transformed into your actively engaged members. The organizer will then select those individuals who are most capable of actively helping to bring the movement to transcendent ‘victory’ over a currently selected and outdated pre-existing paradigm. The followers of your movement are those individuals who understand and appreciate your chief aim, those whom you, the propagating leader, have converted to the principles of the movement and those who only need the passive recognition of the inspiring idea. ‘Godfather of Multiculturalism’ Stuart Hall, Britain’s leading intellectual, sociologist and cultural theorist, had a huge influence on academic, political and cultural debates for over six decades.

The members of your movement are those individuals who, in essence, ‘fight’ for the fulfillment of this inspired aim or mission. They are those who will be inspired by the organization to collaborate in winning over new followers from which, in turn, new members can be formed and those who need the means to represent that idea and actively ‘fight’ for its fuller expression. Your chief aim as the propagating leader is to induce the whole collective into appreciating your new mission, vision and ideas and

engaging them into its pursuit. You or your organizer will then include in your body of membership only those who, on psychological grounds, will not be an impediment to the further diffusion of the mission and principles of your movement. You as a propagating leader and your emerging organization, with your followers and members, will then stand towards one another in a definite mutual relationship to serve your greater cause. As previously stated, your first duty as the propagating leader is to inspire and win over individuals who can subsequently be taken into

the organization. And the first duty of the organizer (you or another) is to select and train these individuals so they will be capable of actively and assertively carrying on the mission, vision and message. The primary objective of the whole organization is to disrupt the existing paradigm or order of things and make room for the penetration of the new inspiring movement, which your inspired ideas represent. The secondary objective of the organization is to persist for the purpose of securing greater power, so that the principles may finally gain appreciation, vast usage and triumph. In every great and inspiring revolutionary movement that is of global importance, its ideas or principles are to be spread abroad through the operation of the mission to be propagated. The supreme task of the organizer, whether you or another, is to see to it that any discord or differences which may arise among the members of your movement will not lead to a split and thereby cramp or restrict the work within your movement. This requires that you display masterful, transcendent leadership, certainty and clarity, as well as sufficient democratic, higher value-based communication. It is your responsibility or duty to see that the inspiring mission of your movement doesn’t diminish its collective enthusiasm and die out, but that it is constantly reinvigorated and re-strengthened by your continued clarity and communication. Only a fraction of humanity generally has the inspired energy and courage to lead globally. The greater and more revolutionary the principles or set of principles you as a leader propagate, the more

active will be the spirit inspiring your body of members. This is because the subversive energy of your unborrowed and innovative principle or set of principles will frighten way the previously conforming chickenhearted and small-minded. Any emerging organization that you initiate with vastly growing numbers of members, inspired by your truly veritable mission, but revolutionary idea, will attract into the body of your membership only the most active of those believers who have been won for it by you, its propagating leader. One of the greatest challenges that can deter your inspired movement is an overly rapid increase in the number of your members, owing to your too accelerated rate of growth. The increasing numbers of smaller minded (disengaged) individuals can turn your movement and degrade it to the service of their personal interests and debase it to the level of their own prideful heroism. They will no longer be struggling for the triumph of your original inspiring and grander idea or mission. To preserve your new movement, it will become essential to partly or fully close the enlisting of new membership the moment it builds sufficient momentum and strength, or otherwise cacophony and splintering can emerge. Your great movement, whether of a social, political or religious nature, will owe its imposing achievements to the recognition and adoption of your original inspiring principles. And no durable JETSETMAG.COM
achievement will be conceivable if your principles are not sound, observed and preserved. The more inspiring and enthusiastic you, as the innovative leader, become, the more you will frighten weak and wavering individuals away, thus preventing them from entering the first nucleus of your movement’s organization. Only those individuals ready for the innovative ideas or views will be disposed to become your lasting members. The principle of full responsibility and engagement is to be adopted little by little throughout your emerging movement and organization. No concessions whatsoever can occur for the fear of responsibility. It will take real work instead of talking to fulfill your inspired mission. At a time when the majority dominates everywhere else, a movement which is based on the principles of you as one inspired new and great leader who has the ability to bear full responsibility and accountability for the direction of the official acts of the movement itself will one day transcend and overthrow the present situation and triumph over the existing paradigm. That is a mathematical certainty. So it is time to take the lead and make your great global leadership difference.

FROM MOONLIGHT MILE TO MYSTERIO BY SI SI PENALOZA

ore endurance athlete than sprinter, Jake Gyllenhaal is clearly driven by the marathon aspect of performance. His most nuanced feats marinate in the magic that lies in the margins between sprint and slow burn. Over the course of two decades, Gyllenhaal has been pretty handedly handsoming up the silver screen. One of the most magnetic actors working today, he cleverly opts for uncanny projects from quixotic indies to singing Sondheim in full pastiche. If you’ve worked as many festival junkets as I have, you know he is an industry treasure. He’s on time and game to play; he knows his every move may be a meme in the making. An enduring paradox in Gyllenhaal’s career remains: despite boyish features, he manages to weird out in ways that surprise us. His overtly striking facial beauty doesn’t quite allow him to disappear into character. Gravitas disguised as a lightness of being, a steel born of satin effect. We’re often at odds with what to do with exceedingly pretty faces — Ryan Reynolds and Charlize Theron can tell you that. The latter endured hours of facial prosthetics to cinch that Oscar, while the former completely concealed his face behind the Deadpool mask to make his comedic mark. For his part, many of Gyllenhaal’s most memorable roles don’t require such transformation. He took it upon himself to bulk up big time for the pugilist overture Southpaw, with a daily regime of 2,000 sit-ups and six-hour training sessions. He then famously starved himself to play the emaciated, ambulance-chasing lead in Nightcrawler. Sure, he’s descended from Swedish nobility, but the guy has a work ethic, an affability, bathed in a boy-next-door vibe he seemingly hasn’t lost. When I first met him, he struck me as far too sensitive, almost absurdly sincere for Hollywood. The year was 2002, he was in Toronto to promote Moonlight Mile alongside co-stars Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sarandon confided to me later that we should ignore Gyllenhaal’s good looks, furthering that he would make for a compelling Holden Caulfield. Indeed, even at the tender age of 22, the actor bore a promising intellect and a truly adventurous mind. Gyllenhaal isn’t faking it when he talks Tom Stoppard. He maintains a legitimate lifeline to stage work. Fast forward to sitting across from Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger at the dramatic press conference for Brokeback Mountain at TIFF 2005, when the cast found out in real time that the film had won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Producer James Schamus played breaking this tidbit of news like Gustav Mahler, sending the gathered international press into a frenzy. I recall Jake’s face erupting into a beautiful car crash of emotions, a collision of cheekbones and brows. He shot Ledger a mercurial grin, knowing both their careers were about to break the stratosphere. Michelle Williams got visibly emotional as well; her breakout performance JETSETMAG.COM

led to major accolades. Gyllenhaal’s first Oscar nomination also hailed from Brokeback Mountain, his hypnotic supporting performance went on to garner his first BAFTA win. It was quite a buzz-fueled press conference to say the least. Stronger, the first film made by Gyllenhaal’s production company Nine Stories, reveals the actor’s commitment to authentic storytelling. As well as acting as producer, Gyllenhaal played the lead role of Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs at the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and upon whose book the film is based. The 2017 biographical drama directed by David Gordon Green follows Bauman in his journey to adjust to harsh new realities. The most striking aspect of Gyllenhaal’s performance is how he refuses to simplify the subject into a hero, as one might expect of a survivor story. The film focuses more on how the wide-eyed, working class Bostonian rebuilt his life after trauma; how he learned to adapt to prosthetic legs, and in the process matured enough to make a life with a wife and child. Critics lauded the filmmakers for resisting over the top stunts, the inciting force deliberately unravels in unspectacular fashion, as a simple background to the main themes. In Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, a seductive drama about the damage that damaged people inflict, Gyllenhaal sealed his status as a serious director’s dramatic contender. He plays a devastated lover, Edward, but also Tony, a character in a book Edward writes, whose carnal identity as a father and husband is brutally shattered. A brooding, gothic meditation on modern America’s dark rural past, it’s an intellectual overture to be sure, touched by incendiary violence. Gyllenhaal’s performance is a savage revelation, one of his finest to date. In the recent blockbuster hit Spider-Man: Far From Home, Gyllenhaal delivers his peak unhinged performance as the villainous Mysterio, the meta-role that fuses the film’s deeper narrative. He goes full wacko and it works. Gyllenhaal stars as Quentin Beck, initially a big brother figure who saves the day early in the plot, making a big impression on the young Peter Parker (Tom Holland). It’s a rather fun trampoline act to watch this renowned workaholic tackle the script’s JETSETMAG.COM
trope of actors playing actors. He was similarly batty in 2017’s Okja as a scientist with an erratic perma-grin, made only more eerie paired with an unnervingly high-pitched voice we had no idea he was even capable of. Despite anchoring more than his fair share of rom-coms, he’s increasingly at home in his wheelhouse of playing the clinically deranged. As agile as he is as an action hero, Gyllenhaal is more deft at letting it ride on the desperate, drawn out pauses, not satisfied to rely on dialogue alone. The manifestation of his character’s motivations always hides suspended between the words. If the scene work is solid enough, he trusts it will take the audience there. He’s ravishingly fluent in the language of film because that is his native tongue. He grew up speaking it with his father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, a film director and his screenwriter mother, Naomi Foner. Sister Maggie Gyllenhaal co-starred with Jake in the cult classic Donnie Darko, and emerged as a force in the industry on both sides of the camera. Those eager to catch up with Gyllenhaal’s passion project have until September 29 to do so. Fresh off a sold-out Off Broadway run of Sea Wall/A Life at the Public Theater, the actor announced last April a remount of the doubleheader at the Hudson Theater on Broadway. Sea Wall is written by Simon Stephens and performed by Tom Sturridge, while A Life is written by Nick Payne and performed by Gyllenhaal. The pair of monologues grapple with similar dilemmas about men managing both loss and ennui as sons and fathers, giving the two stars ample runway to simmer and shine. Nine Stories, Gyllenhaal’s production company, is producing the plays, opening August 8 and closing September 29. Gyllenhaal leans into his oddball indie cred any chance he gets; this is much of the reason he skirts the typical self-absorbed trajectory of the classic Hollywood movie star. He’s no Leonardo DiCaprio, and he’s a far cry from Brad Pitt. Yet his every appearance on screen proves intriguing and compelling to follow. He’s clearly not too sensitive for this industry; he’s just clear, focused and friendly, full stop.

With ACI Jet providing the venue, logistics and ground handling support to International Jet, who provided the aircraft and flight crew, Make-A-Wish children were able to fly around the Orange County area, enjoying a view that very few are ever able to see. For nearly three decades, International Jet has provided flights to hundreds of children, which aligns well with ACI Jet’s corporate culture of giving back to the communities they serve. Upon arrival to the ACI Jet facility, each family was given the VIP treatment and spent the day as honored guests of ACI Jet — complete with a lunch for the children and their families, goodie bags and a private tour of a hangar full of aircraft. The event also included a visit with the Orange County Fire Authority, who allowed the children to ride on their fire truck and spray the hose, as well as to spend time with bomb-sniffing dogs from the Orange County Sherriff’s Department. While ACI Jet is no stranger to charitable events at their JWA facility, this was extra special as the company’s employees had the opportunity to brighten the day of the Make-A-Wish children hosted — many of whom have daily struggles — by making each one of them feel like a celebrity. “ACI Jet has always focused on our communities first,” said Joe Daichendt, Senior Vice President, FBOs, for ACI Jet. “Our track record shows that wherever we have a facility, we become an active part of that community. It is who we are. Our partnership with International Jet and

Make-A-Wish was extraordinary for us, and allowed the kids to have a hands-on experience and be awed by the wonders of aviation.” The highlight of the Make-A-Wish event was the excitement that the children all experienced while flying in International Jet’s Learjet. Aptly named the “Dream Chaser,” this rainbow-colored jet — which some have described looking like a LifeSavers candy roll — took the kids on several memorable flights around the Orange County community and the California coast. While the families were welcome to attend the day’s activities, the flights were limited to only the Make-A-Wish kids. This allowed them an opportunity to get their minds off of their medical conditions or upcoming treatments. It provided them with a special introduction to aviation, allowing them to sit in the cockpit, chat with the pilots and ask all the questions they wanted to about airplanes. In short, it provided them something unique, memorable and fun — a rare treat in the life of a child with a life-threatening condition. And, as Daichendt noted, “Most importantly, it allowed them to just be kids.”
About ACI Jet: Founded in 1998 by the company’s chief executive and avid aviator, William Borgsmiller, and headquartered in California, ACI Jet is a recognized leader in private aviation services. The company enables aircraft owners and operators the freedom to focus on their businesses rather than their travel accommodations. Organically grown, from a single aircraft operation to a multi-base fleet operator, and privately owned since its founding, ACI Jet is the premier provider of aircraft ground support services and fuel, maintenance and inspections, full-service aircraft management and private jet charter services on the West Coast. A New Architectural Masterpiece Rises in SoCal By karen brost

he Pyramids. The Parthenon. The Colosseum. Such structures are stunningly beautiful, shattering geopolitical boundaries to be universally revered as both works of art and marvels of engineering. Yet to us, the Pyramids, the Colosseum and the Parthenon have simply always been there to be admired. No one alive today was around for the architectural or construction meetings that led to these masterpieces of architecture. In some cases, perhaps that’s a good thing. One wonders how many firms the pharaoh interviewed before one enterprising architect convinced him that the pyramid is “the hip new shape in the Nile Valley.” Said a different way, it is one thing to appreciate an architectural masterpiece already built, but quite another to watch history being made — in real time — as a new work of art is brought to life through bold vision, an exhaustive design process and ultimately, construction. Today, an undeveloped, seven-acre property at the Camarillo Airport stands ready for history to be made. By year’s end, a magnum opus will begin to rise on its grounds to be admired for years to come, CloudNine at Camarillo. Just as the early gladiators watched with anticipation as the Colosseum rose brick-by-brick, future owners of each of the four, 25,000 square-foot private luxury hangars will have the same opportunity. The first steps are already taking shape as the supporting infrastructure is born: The construction of a private entrance off Las Posas Road has begun, signaling that what is to be built is something special indeed, for CloudNine is the only development on the north side of Camarillo Airport. For future owners of the luxurious hangars, an award-winning architect has already been chosen: J.R. Miller Associates, or JRMA. This architectural engineering firm is no stranger to Southern California aviation properties, having designed award-winning Fixed Base Operations (FBOs), hangars and other aviation properties in Burbank, Van Nuys, Santa Ana and San Bernardino, to name a few. With permits anticipated to be in hand in September, there is no better architectural firm in aviation than JRMA to design what has never been built before, to create CloudNine at Camarillo. JETSETMAG.COM
Yet the owners at CloudNine at Camarillo will be unlike the gladiators who watched the Colosseum rise but didn’t own the venue in which they did battle — the Roman Empire did. Unique in the aviation industry, each hangar at CloudNine at Camarillo will be owned by the aircraft owners themselves, making each owner an emperor in their own right. Rare is the opportunity to watch history be made; even rarer to own a part of it. With ground breaking in December and delivery of the hangars in late 2020, a new architectural masterpiece is rising in Camarillo. While most will only admire CloudNine from afar, a select few will stand on its grounds, as owners. About CloudNine: CloudNine is a luxury, private hangar complex for the discerning aircraft owner at select markets throughout the country. Created by visionary commercial real estate developer Ron Rasak of RKR, Inc., the first CloudNine breaks ground in Camarillo, CA in 2019 and offers some 100,000 square feet of private hangar space. For hangar customization and pre-leasing information, visit RKRinc.com/cloudnine.

LaSalle Nova Capital Markets Offers a Unique Blended Structure
G

ray Sheldon, managing partner of LaSalle Nova Capital Markets of Chicago, has developed a new financial formula for Real Estate Preferred Equity transactions to achieve much higher leverage ratios on the capital stack than the traditional model. For the new RE Preferred Equity Group at LaSalle Nova (the PEI model), Sheldon has coined a unique blended structure with elements of private equity, mezzanine debt and investment finance. Mezzanine loans and preferred equity investments are used to achieve very high leverage on large commercial projects. Normally, conduits, banks and life companies will not exceed 80 percent loanto-value when making commercial mortgage loans. Mezzanine loans and preferred equity investments are stacked on top of big construction loans or big permanent loans to achieve loan-to-cost ratios as high as 95 percent in most cases. A preferred equity investment is quite different from a mezzanine loan, but it accomplishes nearly the same thing. The lender makes an investment of equity in the LLC that owns the big commercial project to achieve a preferred return. If the management of the LLC fails to pay the preferred member the promised return, the management is ousted and the common members of the LLC JETSETMAG.COM
(the former owners) lose their voting rights, dividends and right to the distribution of any profit. Preferred equity investment is here to stay and will play an important role in filling the gap left by traditional financing. Our current lending environment, with the introduction of BASEL III international banking regulations and recent adjustments to High Volatility Commercial Real Estate (HVCRE) regulations, will require financial practitioners to be much more solution-oriented with a high-level efficiency than ever before. The real estate preferred equity formula from LaSalle Nova presents an innovative solution. It makes an equity investment in the real property of the borrowing entity, and while it is junior to the development debt lender, it is senior to the borrower’s equity. It is secured and packaged under a new formula into a single asset instrument equity joint venture (EJV) with far fewer provisions, eliminating all threats of violating the senior lender’s loan agreement. For more information on this new preferred equity model, contact Gray Sheldon at gray@lasallenovacapital.com or at 312-224-4160. LaSalle Nova Capital Markets is located in Chicago’s Loop Financial District. Lasallenovacapital.com

Final Descent // Miss Jetset Event
Jetset Celebrates and Donates BY DAVID HARALDSEN

he fifth annual Miss Jetset soiree took place on Saturday, May 11th, 2019, and this year’s event certainly did not disappoint. Hundreds of the world’s most beautiful models and successful visionaries gathered at Jetset’s private airplane hangar in Scottsdale, Arizona, for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to mix and mingle for an evening filled with good vibes and great entertainment. The 2019 edition of the highly-acclaimed Miss Jetset cover model search garnered a record-breaking response with more than 25,000 women registering to compete for the coveted title. After multiple rounds of intense competition, 27-year-old Las Vegas resident Enea Culverson ultimately prevailed and earned the opportunity to grace the cover of Jetset Magazine. In keeping with tradition, an extravagant celebration was arranged to honor Jetset’s newest brand ambassador and to present The B+ Foundation with a check for this year’s donation. Upon arrival, guests were flanked by an impressive selection of luxury and exotic vehicles as they walked the red carpet and made their way into the venue. VIP guests enjoyed a variety of libations and danced the night away to the sounds of the lovely DJ Jen Jones, while aerialists could be seen on either side of the stage performing in steel hoops positioned high-above the dance floor. JETSETMAG.COM
This year’s runners-up were recognized on stage and presented with their prize winnings. Then, just as things were beginning to reach a fever pitch, our new Miss Jetset was chartered to the party in grandiose fashion aboard her personal private jet. The atmosphere was electric as guests lined the taxiway to witness her arrival and capture the moment on camera. Miss Culverson then made her way to the stage to enjoy a clever montage created by the team at Jetset before receiving her crown and grand prize check for $50,000. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Joe McDonough, President and Founder of the The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, was brought on stage and presented with a check for $196,273.35 from Jetset Magazine in support of The B+ Foundation’s mission to assist children and families dealing with the harsh realities of pediatric cancer. It’s a cause that’s very close to our hearts and Jetset is honored to stand alongside such a worthy organization. A special thanks to our amazing event partners OHSO Brewery, ACI Jet, DJ Jen Jones, Divinity Lighting, The Collection of Scottsdale, JR Garage, Aeroterra Arts, Paul Matthew Photography, W Valets, and everyone in attendance who came out to celebrate with us.

Paris Fashion Week has been a Mecca for the “fash” pack, and naturally these fabulous people need fabulous parties. PFW is also a great excuse for grand openings, promotional events and lavish celebrity-studded parties thrown by anyone who’s anyone. Where water, sun and soul connect. The call of lake, land and location intrigued the owners to build the next generation Lake Tahoe property. Growing out of the land on a magnificent hillside, it took five years to build the main residence and guest house. After a ten-year process to obtain permits, an incredible lakefront “beach house” was completed in 2016 and offers the ultimate enjoyment for family and friends. With few rivals in the world, it is truly a world unto its own, a world to share with the people you love. Designed to honor the natural essence of the land, overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Tahoe, Crystal Pointe is Lake Tahoe’s most exclusive property. Crystal Pointe is offered for sale completely furnished. Rare architectural elements include two glass funiculars connecting the garages with the main residence and beach house. There are level grounds with gardens weaving through sculpted streams, waterfalls and stunning landscape. The secluded private lakefront and pristine forest surrounding this quintessential mountain estate provides the perfect backdrop—peaceful and private, intimate yet grand, with awe inspiring views of Lake Tahoe. Enjoy Nevada tax advantages.
