magine how incredible it would be to enter a specially-designed glass capsule on your yacht, then descend down through the hull to take in breathtaking 360-degree views of the ocean environment beneath the surface. That’s the concept for the Hydrosphere from UK-based Gresham Yacht Design. With a capacity to seat up to seven guests at one time, the Hydrosphere can be used day or night, thanks to onboard lighting that can illuminate the water. Of course, safety is paramount, which is why the shell of the Hydrosphere extends through the hull so that guests may enter and exit the unit safely via a curved staircase. When not in use, the Hydrosphere retracts into the hull and is protected by an external hatch. The Hydrosphere is designed to enable guests to get below the waterline quickly so they won’t miss any of the mesmerizing underwater scenes that lie below. “The only other way to get this type of experience is to dive in a submersible,” says Steve Gresham, principal

designer and founder of Gresham Yacht Design. “This takes time though—to get a sub ready to launch and into the water takes at least an hour, if not more. Our Hydrosphere takes mere minutes to deploy, meaning that you don’t miss that fleeting moment when a beautiful sea creature swims past.” With the Hydrosphere onboard your yacht, you and your guests will be able immerse yourselves in the underwater world any time you like without ever getting wet. “Only the House of Rolls-Royce can offer its Coachbuild clients the inimitable opportunity to commission a product of future historical significance.” - Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce

t

he competition rages on for top honors among Europe’s elite automakers, and the coachbuilders at Rolls-Royce have joined the battle in hopes of reclaiming the title of “world’s most expensive new car.” After originally earning the coveted moniker in 2017 with the brand’s ultra-exclusive Rolls-Royce Sweptail, the British marque has re-entered the race for affluent superiority with the introduction of the completely bespoke Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, limited to just three units and boasting an estimated cost of nearly $28M. Designated for only the most royal of riders, each unique rendition of the Boat Tail is composed of more than 1,800 newly crafted parts which have been created exclusively for the uber elite convertible. This modern megacruiser, inspired by the rather peculiar looking 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail (a vehicle well worth a quick web search), brings land yacht ideology into the new millennium with a virtual smorgasbord of cutting edge technology and one-of-a-kind details worthy of a king’s ransom. The world’s first opportunity to see the new model reveals a beautifully bespoke two-tone blue paint scheme with complementary interior and a cleverly integrated rear deck lid parasol, perfectly paired with built-in tables and matching stools for picnicking with your passenger. The center-hinged

wooden hull-inspired trunk lid can be opened remotely and gives way to a gorgeous array of customized crockery and cutlery. The client’s favorite vintage champagne can be stored within the Boat Tail’s double refrigerator, an accessory that has been meticulously calibrated to chill spirits to a sommelier’s specified temperature setting. The supersized Boat Tail, measuring nearly nineteen-feet long, took more than four years to develop and is completely bespoke based on the commissioning client’s precise specifications. Sharing only the chassis and bodywork (loosely based on the highly-successful Phantom platform), each of the three Rolls-Royce Boat Tail vehicles will be hand-built from sheet aluminum with entirely different appointments and applications. The first version as shown also includes a set of “his and hers” custom Bovet 1822 wristwatches which strategically integrate into the dash to serve as the vehicle’s onboard clocks. The timepieces took an impressive three years to create in collaboration with the British luxury manufacturer. Rolls-Royce’s street-legal superyacht is a genuine masterpiece of engineering, ingenuity, and craftsmanship. Its sleek lines and simplified fascia impressively highlight the marque’s relentless pursuit of perfection and emphasis on coachbuilding as integral features of its vision for the future.

| JetsetMag.com

T

here’s an exciting buzz in the air as the highly charged future of travel begins to take shape. The global integration of eVTOL technology (short for electric vertical take-off and landing) is just over the horizon, and many of the world’s biggest corporate players, including behemoths like Uber and Amazon, are already jumping on the bandwagon by placing significant orders for eVTOL aircraft capable of moving both people and packages. We’ve taken some of the guesswork out of the equation to give you a better idea of what the future of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and airborne public transportation might hold. Believe it or not, eVTOL technology is nothing new. It’s essentially the same concept behind many of today’s popular remote control drones, from high-flying digital camera operators to more elaborate racing drones (yes, it’s an actual sport). Until recently, though, the idea of using this breakthrough technology as a method of transportation seemed far removed from reality. Today, while Marty McFly’s hoverboard might still be a few years from hitting store shelves, flying cars are no longer merely the stuff of childhood fantasies and futuristic films.

The technology behind eVTOL vehicles reflects a variety of approaches. Tilt-thrust, widely regarded as the most efficient configuration, employs a set of movable rotors that allow the aircraft to shift from vertical to horizontal flight. The tilt-thrust method is often combined with a traditional aircraft wing to add increased lift and streamline forward motion when in flight. Alternatively, multi-rotor configurations have been designed to tilt the entire vehicle forward to engage forward motion similar to the movement of a traditional helicopter, while Lift and Cruise eVTOL technology varies from the multi-rotor and tilt-thrust designs by utilizing a second fixed motor for forward propulsion. As electric mobility solutions continue to reflect a more ecofriendly market attitude, with everything from high-speed EV hypercars to battery-powered airplanes becoming the norm, a cadre of industry innovators is poised to dramatically alter the air transport landscape. These optimistic providers are each vying for their piece of what could be a very lucrative pie, with some estimates projecting the industry will grow exponentially over the coming decades.

The VoloCity Air Taxi doesn’t need streets. It flies quietly and is emissionfree in flight. Combined with VoloPorts, it connects key transport hubs like main stations and airports to enable seamless, faster, and more convenient travel within the city. The VoloCity is not just another aircraft, it’s a game changer. 32

Uber S-A1 Air Taxi - Photographer SeongJoon Cho

Chinese tech developer Ehang, a major competitor in the race for eVTOL market share, bills itself as the global leader in Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) technology and has taken a stake in advancing Urban Air Mobility as a viable solution for transporting both goods and passengers. The company’s core focus is to help define regulations and commercialization of AAV technology with a mission of making safe, autonomous, and eco-friendly air mobility solutions available to the public. The brand’s second eVTOL model, the EHang 216, has already entered production and features a 17kW battery pack, similar to an electric car. With sixteen propellers helping the aircraft reach speeds of nearly 100mph, the EHang 216 can travel just over 40 miles per charge. The AAV is expected to be used for a variety of tasks including public transportation, tourism and sightseeing, emergency medical assistance, and short distance logistics. Also entering the logistics arena, Germany’s Volocopter and Pennsylvania-based Near Earth Autonomy have partnered to develop and deploy the team’s 18-rotor VoloDrone, capable of delivering a cargo load of up to 440 pounds as far as 25 miles. The collaboration will allow the two companies to feature the eVTOL aircraft’s “beyond visual line of sight” (BVLOS) capabilities in an effort to showcase the future of autonomous aerial cargo transportation. In speaking about the recently inked relationship, VoloDrone’s chief engineer Christophe Hommet says, “Near Earth Autonomy has years of experience, shown real results, and is going to help our VoloDrone stay ahead of the curve with autonomous capabilities.”

Moving packages is only one element of the UAM movement, and there are numerous eVTOL brands who view public transportation possibilities as the driving force behind the technology’s widespread implementation. For example, Uber and popular private air taxi company Blade have both placed significant orders for eVTOL aircraft which they expect to be fully operational by 2026. While Blade’s acquisition of 20 electric aircraft from eVTOL manufacturer Beta will help elevate the public transportation sector, Beta is also producing 150 delivery-enabled AAVs for UPS, as the logistics provider looks to minimize its carbon footprint and streamline future operations. Conversely, Uber is participating in an estimated $1.6B investment in Joby Aviation, along with financial backing from BlackRock and Fidelity, as the popular ride share company prepares for the future shift of on-demand transportation services from street to sky. In addition to a strategic partnership with Toyota, Joby Aviation’s acquisition of Uber Elevate (Uber’s eVTOL division) will help position the electric aircraft developer as a prominent player in the public air transport vertical. In another noteworthy partnership, US-based Associated Aircraft Group (AAG) and UK-based Halo Aviation Ltd have joined under the Halo banner. (Both companies were acquired in 2021 by Issue 3 . 2021 |

“It won’t be long before your packages are delivered via autonomous drones and your ride to the office is an airborne taxi.” OneSky Flight, a division of parent company Directional Aviation which also owns and operates private jet brands Flexjet, Sentient Jet, PrivateFly and FXAIR). The brand aims to become the first global provider of Urban Air Mobility services and has already purchased 200 eVTOL aircraft from leading aviation manufacturer Embraer’s Eve urban air mobility solutions. OneSky’s Andrew Collins, leading the brand’s vertical lift transition strategy, says, “Where private aviation was previously thought of in terms of moving people from airport to airport, today’s travel is becoming a doorstep-to-doorstep concept.” Employing a novel approach to the electric air taxi concept, LA-based eVTOL company Talyn Air was founded by two former aeronautical engineers who previously worked on the development of the ground-breaking Falcon 9 orbital rocket (the first of its kind capable of re-flight) and the SpaceX Crew Dragon. Utilizing a drone and main aircraft configuration, Talyn’s innovative concept is estimated to fly more than three times farther than traditional eVTOL aircraft by using a lift and launch design that reduces the

Joby Aviation 34

| JetsetMag.com

main aircraft’s battery usage by employing a large drone to assist with takeoff and landing. The absence of traditional VTOL rotors and vehicle architecture will also help reduce drag for improved flight and battery efficiency. Estimates are that Talyn’s aircraft will be capable of carrying as many as five passengers up to 300 miles with a top speed of nearly 200 mph, an impressive feat considering the predicted range of most eVTOL models is below the 100-miles mark. Another common characteristic of current eVTOL technology is limited capacity, with most aircraft being held to a rather underwhelming max payload. To overcome the challenge, New Yorkbased Kelekona is developing a “blimp-like” aircraft made from 3-D printed composite and capable of transporting up to 40 people or an equivalent payload of up to 10,000 lbs. Where most eVTOL developers have emphasized vehicles with a 2-5 passenger capacity, Kelekona hopes to create an air minibus focused on mass transit with the ability to travel from LA to San Francisco in one hour, roughly the same time it takes on a traditional airplane but without the need to visit a crowded airport. The company also sees a future use for the tilt-thrust eVTOL as an air ambulance or military transport. From Airbus to Boeing, the secret is officially out and the world’s biggest aviation providers are welcoming eVTOL technology with open arms. It won’t be long before your packages are delivered via autonomous drones and your ride to the office is an airborne taxi.

In 2021, Breguet adds to this line new variations in rose gold with a slategray dial, and in titanium with a blue dial. The variations in rose gold of the Marine models feature a type of guillochage specially designed for the collection that mirrors its original inspiration. The gold dial, like a ship’s porthole revealing a glimpse of the sea in motion, incorporates a guillochage pattern in the form of waves. This piece of craftsmanship, which has always adorned Breguet timepieces, adds an extra touch of character to these watches, thanks to the expertise of the engine-turning artisans trained at the House of Breguet. 36

HUBLOT & BERLUTI

Big Bang Unico Berluti Cold Brown The collaboration between men’s fashion house Berluti and watchmaker Hublot has given life to a series of monumental watches. Bringing together the former’s legendary Venezia leather with Hublot’s art of horology, this model is based for the first time on the iconic Big Bang Unico chronograph. A construction encases the leather between two pieces of sapphire glass, cut out for the first time to allow the wearer to admire the gears of the Unico movement.

Napoleon Westminster Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon

CARTIER

Santos de Cartier Cartier introduces multiple new variants of the Santos de Cartier. The iconic design remains unchanged but is now available with ADLC finish. The two new references are only available in the LM size: one model featuring a black dial with a full ADLC finish on the case while the other features a grey dial and an ADLC finish on the bezel.

To reward his bravest soldiers, Napoleon created, from the start of his reign, the Legion of Honor and his famous medal. Christophe Claret decided to put the exceptional symbol on the tourbillon cage of this timepiece. This tribute is further embodied by a Westminster flying tourbillon minute repeater provided with a jacquemart automata featuring Napoleon with his soldiers. The back of the watch allows a view of the mechanism of the Westminster minute repeater as well as a memorable epitaph.

Villeret Women Date

Twenty~4 Collection

The Villeret collection has benefited from the results of Blancpain’s latest research into movement production. Correctors beneath the horns, protected calendar and moon-phase mechanisms, prodigious power reserves, everything is brought into play to add value to exceptional timepieces.

Versatility was top of mind when Patek Philippe designed the Twenty~4. By cleverly combining rectangular shapes, Patek Philippe struck the perfect balance between jewelry and horology, giving the timepiece an instantly recognizable profile.

Tambour Carpe Diem

Designed as miniature works of art, these numbered, limited-edition timepieces embody the maison’s savoir-faire. The sun shines through the dial, composed of a light dome adorned with honeycomb-set yellow sapphires and diamonds. Sunbeams gleaming in yellow gold alternate with white gold rays adorned with plique-à-jour enamel for subtle transparency.

This new coveted Bovet uses a completely new material and a new process to create a dial that has never been seen before in watchmaking. One made from pure sugar. First, sugar crystals are prepared so their structure will not change when exposed to light or heat. Prized crystals are selected for size, then combined with special paints and hand-applied to the dial.

The structure of the Tambour Carpe Diem looks nothing like you’d expect from a traditional watch, brimming with incredibly vivid Calavera imagery. With a press of the snake, the watch whirrs to life as the skull on the dial begins to reveal the words Carpe Diem inside its mouth, while the Louis Vuitton logo inside its eye morphs in shape.

imitless vehicle designer, Timur Bozca, has VISION. But it’s more than a little extra perspective. He doesn’t simply sit back, close his eyes, and imagine a future that does not yet exist. Oh no, this vision is different. It is divination drawn from the cosmos. It is a journey without limits, without compromise, without boundaries. Bozca lives, works, and breathes on another level of existence, and he brings his creations and his imaginations to our reality. The Turkish designer behind Bozca Design Ltd. works in all vehicle sectors creating next-level transportation for tomorrow, the day after that, and the day after that. Bozca has considerable experience in automotive and transport design with a specialty in digital modeling. His award-winning studio is one of the most exciting and rapidly growing portfolios of nextgen superyachts. Bozca Designs’ long-awaited concept, Esquel, has finally entered into earth’s realm. We sat down with the designer to get some insight into his ethereal vision for the Esquel expedition yacht, where he draws inspiration from, and what we can look forward to in the coming years.

45

Takeoff Takeoff //// Taste Design The plans for the Esquel expedition were revealed at the Dubai International Boat Show in 2019. The ultraluxe superyacht has a strengthened hull, Polar classification, a top speed of 16.5 knots, and a cruising range of 7,000 nautical miles, making it a multifunctional resource for exploring the world. To further solidify its expedition potential, the boat can carry two submarines, a land vehicle, motorbikes, water toys, and a helicopter — all for land, sea, and air exploration. Design features include an aft deck glass superstructure with an indoor pool/beach club area, a wellness designation, and panoramic views. Interiors are geared towards “depicting the life, influences, and home of a young explorer,” said interior stylist Gina Brennan. “It features an eclectic mix of antiques and artifacts collected on his/her travels.”

46

Jetset: First, let’s talk about Esquel, Oceanco’s project in collaboration with Bozca Design, stylist Gina Brennan, Lateral Naval Architects, and Pelorus. Bozca: Esquel represents a new revolutionary type of multi-purpose superyacht. It is a state-of-the-art 105-meter diesel-electric motor yacht, both an expedition vessel and a sophisticated superyacht. As the exterior designer of Esquel, our inspiration was a space rocket. The exterior is one single cohesive form designed to embody simplicity and strength. While her lines are stately and chic, she is a no-nonsense high-tech go-anywhere vessel that can sail from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, through the Arctic Circle, and back around again. We also conceived Esquel as a vessel for people who are passionate about marine life and highly keen on exploration studies. There is an option to create reef farms (onboard) to contribute to the preservation of natural sea flora. Esquel can also investigate the atmosphere, the ocean, and

| JetsetMag.com

the seafloor. A test facility for clean marine energy can be on board for marine suppliers to test fuel cells or deploy other emerging technologies in real-world environments. The exterior design works seamlessly with the interior design. We wanted a maximum number of exterior views from the interior, so we have incorporated large windows and skylights.

Jetset: What is your definition of a true designer? Bozca: A true designer is the one with unlimited imagination; they create the non-existent. Designers nurture their vision with the experiences and, subsequently, create solutions through design by considering human factors, technology, and aesthetics — as we did in the collaboration for Esquel. It is very important for designers to have an active life to increase their senses: touching, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and learning to maximize their vision. Thus, they can eliminate the limitation of their imagination and maximize their creativity.

Jetset: What is the story behind your slogan Limitless Design? Bozca: I have an artistic family — my father is an architect, my mother is an artist-painter, and my sister is an interior designer. Thanks to this and my curiosity, I was surrounded by the utmost creative atmosphere. Then, while studying at university, I started to work on freelance projects such as wine bottles, furniture, advertising campaigns, and websites. I officially started my career as a car designer and then moved into helicopters and architectures; naturally, for me, yachts followed. I prefer to work in harmony to reflect all these experiences into a single form. That’s why I never limit my creativity in a single industry, and I believe this is making us limitless in our field. Jetset: Tell us more about your inspiration series. Bozca: The series observes inspirational animals, structures, and

plants to apply their look, moves, and character into superyacht design. The focus on nature reflects my own passions, and the latest series promises to take this even further. As a self-proclaimed nature addict, I believe that some of the greatest sources of innovation can be found in the surrounding environment. Nature is the world’s most effective designer; millions of years of evolution have created some of the most sophisticated and efficient design solutions. Jetset: What are your current and future projects? Bozca: We are currently working on a wide variety of projects, from a blend of submarine and boat to a mega-ship conversion, a hydrogen yacht, and a 5-star ski hotel. We have a plan to build revolutionary yachts, floating villas, and eco-villages implemented by our own companies through the innovative features we have determined in the future.

RESIDENTIAL LIVING IS EXPERIENCING A PARADIGM SHIFT BY ANNE-MARIE PRITCHETT

t 48

hese challenging times have brought about an opportunity for change, which is the precursor of growth. As such, we expect to see positive shifts in healthcare reform, personal and public hygiene, travel, technology, and home design. As we evolve together as a society on a large scale, we retreat as families and individuals. Our homes (our sanctuaries) have become makeshift offices, schools, restaurants, spas, gyms, movie theaters, and conference rooms. People value their homes now more than ever and continue to be reminded how beneficial they are to our well-being. | JetsetMag.com

a

rchitects and designers are seeing an uptick of interest in areas of design that can better both our at-home lives and the environment. Efficient power and water, indoor/outdoor spaces, UV sensors, roof terraces, solar panels, urban farming, reimagined floorplans, EPAfriendly products, and a more hygienic atmosphere are some of the widespread upgrades expected in residences across the globe. Thoughtful design in architecture is top of mind as indoor and outdoor living takes new shape. Clearly Defined Spaces As more people work remotely and newly acquired behaviors are becoming more permanent, the functionality of the home is getting an upgrade. Flexibility is one of the top priorities for luxury homeowners who find themselves with multiple spatial needs. Therefore, the popular open floorplan concept is predicted to morph into reimagined layouts with clearly defined spaces. Look for separate entrances, extended foyers, and mudrooms to act as a barrier from the outside world. These areas work as ‘drop zones’ where shoes can be removed, and hands can be sanitized before entering the sacred space of the home.

As we see longevity in the work-from-home model, a home office is a must-have. Not just any old makeshift home office, but a defined, technologically equipped, sound insulated, private space. The windows will be large allowing for natural light and a connection to the outdoors. The new home office will act as a private communication room with good acoustics and great lighting for virtual work meetings. Outdoor Living This is the time to evaluate and alter the layout and functionality of outdoor spaces. “We need to be able to move around in nature, and because of COVID-19, we have learned that our front and backyards are the safest places to do so,” said architect Sybille Zimmermann, the founder of L.A.-based Studio Zimmermann. As indoor/outdoor living grows in popularity, alfresco dining and entertaining areas are getting some much-deserved attention. From vast, sweeping patios with gorgeous seating areas to hefty outdoor kitchens replete with pizza ovens, built-in WiFi grills, stainless steel appliances, and coordinating dining tables, designers are making our post-

coronavirus outdoor dreams come true. At the same time, they are bringing the surrounding landscape to life by integrating elements like water features, fireplaces, stone walkways, and custom lighting. The new luxury home will include a rooftop terrace retreat outfitted with a cozy seating area, lush greenery and planters, and trellises or canopies creating a space to relax and enjoy the fresh air and views, further extending the indoor/outdoor living concept.

Interior Design When it comes to interiors, hygiene is a top priority. Nonporous surfaces are gaining ground due to their antibacterial properties. High quality Caesarstone quartz countertops are environmentally responsible and available in designs that imitate marble and granite. These types of surfaces are flexible, allowing for several different applications around the home including office desks and workstations. Other hygiene products that are trending include Monogram professional cooktops, ovens, and refrigerators which feature WiFi connectivity with app-controlled settings that reduce the need to handle surfaces. Another welcome change in the kitchen, wet bar, and bathroom will be the addition of copper fixtures, sinks, and bathtubs, due to the metal’s sanitary properties. “Kitchen and bathroom sinks are among the most frequently used items in the home, so opting for a copper sink can play a powerful role in maintaining a truly sanitary environment. It is a beautiful, sustainable, and highly practical

Designers are also harnessing the power of UVC light, which has been proven to kill airborne viruses, as a tool to help stop the spread and multiplication of viruses. Along with UVC disinfecting lamps that can be placed around the home, Smart UV has designed portable UV light sanitizing devices to take on the go. Look for vast improvements in air filtration systems, and further progress in home automation connectivity. Crestron Home has changed the game by delivering a seamless wire-free system that delivers one touch control of the entire home— lighting, temperature, entertainment system, security, and other audiovisual installations. Home workout equipment like Peloton and Mirror have seen sales spike. Homeowners are already transforming extra rooms into home gyms, so expect to see wellness rooms as prevalent as the home office in new builds. These spaces can be used as meditation areas too; anything to enhance our wellbeing at home.

“The design of the spaces we inhabit impacts on the way we feel, perform and behave.” - Oliver Heath

Biophilic Design Biophilic Design is more relevant than ever as nature is essential for health and well-being. “The basic concept of a desire to be in and around nature and closer to it in terms of how we build has become known as biophilic design,” said Oliver Heath of Oliver Heath Design. “It’s a common misconception that biophilic design is just about adding plants and greenery to spaces. It’s how we use the design of the building to improve mental well-being and help people to be less stressed, undertake tasks more efficiently, and recover from mental/emotional/ physical exertion.” While not a new concept, it is an important one to implement into residential design. By adding sustainable materials, good acoustics, natural lighting, vegetation including phytowalls, and opportunities to interact with nature, designers are able to create more productive spaces to live and work.

WHAT’S IN THE SECRET SAUCE OF CENTURY-OLD COMPANIES? BY BARRY LABOV

T

ake a moment to think about how many companies you know that have been around for 50 years. Now how about 75 years? 85? 100? Likely the number of companies you were able to come up with decreased as the years increased. That’s because 96% of businesses fail in the first 10 years. It’s a depressing statistic to be sure, but it’s a cold, hard reality. So, when a company not only makes it past 10 years, but joins that impressive echelon of 100+ year-old enterprises, it’s truly remarkable. Over the years, I have worked with several companies that have reached this stratum. There’s a lot that can be learned from resilient establishments that have weathered the storms for a century or more and come out on top.

Reinvention and realignment. One thing you’ll hear from companies that have been in business for over 100 years is they’ve continued to evolve. That can mean realigning to keep products relevant as the world changes. It can also be a complete reinvention. Look at Procter and Gamble (P&G). The company began as a soap and candle company in 1837. Today, P&G owns a raft of iconic brands, from toothpaste to detergent. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Kodak, once a film giant in the photography industry. It failed to reinvent itself when digital photography disrupted the market. What’s even more astonishing is that it was one of Kodak’s own engineers who invented the first digital camera in 1975. It could have remained a forerunner in the industry, but failed to realign its products to meet a changing market. Customer centricity. To reach 100 years and beyond, companies need to be customer and market centric. That means staying in tune to what customers want. Needs change over time as markets evolve along

takes someone from the outside looking in to identify all the processes, technologies or features that truly make them remarkable. And when those differentiators are promoted, these century-old companies solidify their place in the market for years to come. Superior quality. Customers have choices—more so now than ever before. That’s why quality is one of the foundational must-haves of any company that’s survived for a century or more. If they failed in that department, customers would turn to other options available to them. And once they’re lost due to a quality issue, it’s an uphill battle to get them back. For a manufacturer, quality can only be achieved by working closely with suppliers. An end product is only as good as the pieces and parts that go into it. Any 100+ year-old manufacturer will tell you that establishing strong supplier relationships is a key part of their success. Ultimately, it’s about never letting the end customer down or giving them a reason to take their business elsewhere.

“Through the years of change both internally and in the world around them, these centenarian companies have learned to adapt and remain relevant.” with the discovery of new technologies and innovations. Companies that stay close to their customers will recognize these transformations, which then informs how they need to change to remain relevant. This evolution is absolutely necessary for growth and continued success. Unceasing innovation. Harley-Davidson got its start in 1903 when two industrious friends put a small engine on a bicycle. Had they stopped there, they wouldn’t have gotten very far, literally or figuratively. As the years went by, the engine got bigger and more powerful; the frame became sturdier and more refined. Today, HarleyDavidson is among the most iconic brands in the world. One of the company’s leadership principles is “agility—accelerating, innovating and thriving in a rapidly changing environment.” That direction is evident in the brand’s first EV motorcycle, the LiveWire®. It represents the company’s continued drive to transform its product offering. Focus on differentiation. Longtime companies realize even greater success when they focus on what makes them unique. It often

Focus on people. Long-lasting organizations unleash the power of their teams. They inspire them to generate ideas and see them through. They provide the support and training needed to drive the company forward. Some of the most innovative, fastest-growing businesses give their employees a stake in their success. Whether it’s bonuses or tying performance to base salaries, innovative compensation programs motivate employees and establish an entrepreneurial, thriving culture. Century-old companies are an interesting study. Some have remained family-owned businesses while others have been acquired by larger companies. Some have held true to their core business while others have expanded into other areas or reinvented themselves altogether. Through the years of change both internally and in the world around them, these centenarian companies have learned to adapt and remain relevant. We can all learn from their resilience as we strive to be counted among their ranks in the future.

Real Estate Investing

MAKE YOUR MONEY WORK FOR YOU BY KEN MCELROY

W

hen I think back to what I knew about taxes when I was starting out as a real estate investor compared to what I know now, my education has been stratospheric. I’m not claiming to be a tax expert, but I have learned a lot over the years, and the main headline I can share with you is that real estate investing offers tax advantages that few other enterprises do. We are uniquely fortunate to be able to use depreciation to our advantage, to defer large tax liabilities by reinvesting and to deduct all kinds of expenses to minimize our tax liability.

| JetsetMag.com

GETTING SET UP One of the most important things you can do at the outset of your career as a real estate investor is to form a limited liability corporation, or LLC. When you take your property or properties out of your name and put them into an LLC, it will help you tremendously and spare you some major headaches. There are several advantages to LLCs, but the chief one is that it protects your personal assets. If you are ever sued for something that happens at one of your properties, you won’t be personally liable and your personal assets are protected. While the requirements and procedures vary from state to state, forming an LLC is a pretty straightforward process and you can file the paperwork for your LLC online. Once you’ve chosen a name for your LLC that no one else is using, you’ll file your articles of organization, which generally require information about the company principals. If you have partners, some states will require an operating contract, which is essentially an agreement among the LLC members about the breakdown of responsibilities, obligations and how profits and losses are distributed. The final thing you need to do to start your LLC is to obtain the business licenses and permits necessary for your industry. Beyond the liability advantages, there are strong tax advantages to operating as an LLC. A real estate LLC can save you thousands of dollars. It allows for pass-through taxation, which means that the business won’t be directly taxed. Instead, investors report their company’s profits or losses on their personal tax returns. In most cases, this will result in a lower rate for business owners and avoids double taxation. There are different types of LLCs depending on how many members there are. In a Single Member LLC, the LLC business is not taxed. Instead, the member is taxed through their personal federal tax return. In a Partners LLC, members elect to be taxed as a traditional partnership. Their tax liability is determined by their share of ownership. In a Corporation LLC, members become shareholders. The corporation pays taxes on its income, and as a shareholder you only pay taxes on any dividends you receive.

“The most tax-efficient way of building wealth through real estate is to hold on to your investment properties for as long as possible.”

ADDING PROPERTIES TO AN LLC AFTER THE FACT If you need to finance your property as a new investor, it may not be possible to secure financing with your LLC as the lendee. After all, the bank wants to know that they will be repaid, and a brand-new LLC isn’t the safest bet from their standpoint. It may take a year or two to be able to secure financing in the LLC’s name due to it being a new company. As soon as you have a chance, refinance the property in the LLC’s name, even if you must go with another lender.

DEDUCT AWAY! While real estate investing isn’t the only occupation that allows you to make tax deductions, the volume and variety of them will allow you to hold on to a sizable chunk of your income. When you are a real estate investor, you’re able to make deductions for the construction, management and maintenance of your property. That includes: • Property taxes • Property insurance • Mortgage interest • Property management fees • Costs of maintenance and repair Sounds like a lot, right? Well actually, those are only some of the deductions. You can also deduct for any expenses related to your real estate investing business. That includes: • Office space • Office equipment • Advertising • Legal and accounting fees • Any employees or independent contractors you pay • Travel, including mileage to and from your site Issue 3 . 2021 |

67

Altitude // Estates These deductions can really add up. The key to reaping them is to make sure that you are able to provide proof of your expenses, so it’s up to you to meticulously save any receipts, invoices and other documentation of your business expenses. Those receipts are money, so be sure to hand every last one over to your tax preparer.

DEPRECIATION AND COST SEGREGATION Depreciation is a deduction taken on materials that break down over time. It’s not a concept unique to real estate. In fact, it’s used in most businesses. Typically, real estate investors depreciate their residential properties on a 27.5-year schedule, which is known as straight depreciation. (Commercial properties can depreciate over the course of 39 years.) This depreciation can only be applied to the actual property, not the land it’s on. Real estate investors can also employ cost segregation, which is a way to accelerate their depreciation. With cost segregation, you can reclassify a portion of your assets as personal property instead of real estate property in order to depreciate them on a much faster schedule (such as five, seven or fifteen years). This lowers your tax liability, allowing you to hold on to more of your income. You can apply segregation depreciation to items such as your property’s carpeting, kitchen appliances, lawn sprinkler system and even the parking lot. LOWER TAX RATES ON CAPITAL GAINS A capital gain is the profit you make when you sell an asset for more than you paid for it. A long-term capital gains tax is a tax on any profits from the sale of an asset held for more than one year. For the tax year 2020, the long-term capital gains tax rate is 0 percent, 15 percent or 20 percent depending on your taxable income and filing status. The 15 percent rate kicks in at earnings above $40,000 per year, and anyone earning $441,451 or more would be subject to a tax rate of 20 percent. The most tax-efficient way of building wealth through real estate is to hold on to your investment properties for as long as possible. Or, as Warren Buffett famously remarked, “my favorite holding period is forever.” When you sell, you pay transaction fees, commissions and taxes. All of these costs will impede your profit because you will forever lose out on the passive income from your property and the long-term benefits of appreciation. Real estate appreciation doesn’t get taxed by the IRS until you sell the property. So, if you buy and hold for many years, your net worth will grow with minimal tax exposure. And when you do choose to sell, the capital gains tax rate is still less than the equivalent income tax on ordinary income, even in the higher capital gains brackets of fifteen or twenty percent.

1031 EXCHANGE Once you decide that it’s time to sell, putting your profits into a 1031 exchange will enable you to hold on to your money. The 1031 exchange gets its name from Section 1031 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, which allows you to avoid paying capital gains taxes when you sell an investment property and reinvest the proceeds from the sale in a property or properties of like kind and equal or greater value. That means you won’t be taxed on any capital gains from the sale, so long as you use all of the proceeds for your new investment.

THE BIDEN PLAN There is a caveat to all of this. Biden, like pretty much every president before him, has said that he’s looking into modifying the existing framework around 1031, capital gains taxes and the step-up basis (casually known as “inheritance tax”). Real estate investors are waiting to see what will happen with the Biden administration’s proposed tax plan, which would raise the top capital-gains tax rate from 23.8 percent to 43.4 percent for those earning over $1 million. The Biden plan has also set its sights on modifying the 1031 exchange. As it currently stands, any amount of money investors place in a 1031 exchange remains tax-free. If Biden’s proposal becomes law, investors would only be allowed to defer taxes on profits up to $500,000. While this would undoubtedly impact high-earning investors, it wouldn’t cancel out the other advantages of real estate investing: cash flow, numerous tax deductions on your investment income and the long-term appreciation of your real estate. Even if Biden’s proposed reforms become law, real estate is still an excellent way to make your money work for you.

CONCLUSION Unlike other industries, you don’t need to take a loss in order to have any tax advantages. With real estate, you can reap the benefits of monthly passive income and still be able to experience the tax benefits of real estate investing. You’ve worked hard for your money; now it’s time to make your money work for you. I

n 1964, I was 16 years old when I first noticed a copper tinge around a silver dime. I did not really know what the change in color meant—that copper tinge—but something inside of me knew something had changed... and that something was wrong. Little did I know I was sensing the effect of Gresham’s Law, which states: “Bad money drives out good.”

72

| JetsetMag.com

I

had never heard of Gresham’s Law and operated on instinct when I went to my local bank and changed a $10 bill for $10 in rolls of dimes. As soon as I got home with my dimes, I went through the rolls of dimes and began pulling out the dimes with the copper tinge. The next day, I rolled up the dimes with copper—the “fake dimes” that I had identified—and returned them to the bank for new rolls of dimes. For about a year, the process of exchanging paper money for rolls of dimes, quarters and half-dollars kept me entertained. Soon, I had a large canvas bag filling up with real dimes, quarters, and halfdollars... my life’s savings. In real money. As I said, I had never heard of Gresham’s Law. I just sensed that something was wrong. In August of 1965, I received a Congressional appointment to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. I headed off to school and left my canvas bag of money at home in Hawaii. I estimate I had almost $100 in real silver coins in that bag. In 1966 I returned home to Hawaii from New York for Christmas break. When I could not find my canvas bag, I asked my mom what happened to my “life’s savings,” my canvas bag filled with coins. Her reply: “I spent it.” GLOBAL CRISIS In 2021, the world is embroiled in a massive financial crisis. In some ways, this 2021 global crisis is the same crisis my mom experienced when she spent my bag of real silver coins. The crisis— the 2021 gap between the rich, poor, and middle class—has reached dangerous levels. If millions of Americans do not receive their next “stimulus check” there could be massive civil unrest with looting and burning like we experienced in 2020. Civil unrest and the gap between the rich and poor are byproducts of people, like my mom, who are not aware of Gresham’s Law, and why “bad money” is driving out “good money.”

“In 1965, when my mom told me she took my canvas bag of silver coins and spent it, I sensed that my family—and the world—was in trouble. I did not have the heart to tell her the truth, the truth being that she did not know the difference between real money and fake money.”

In 2021, there are many reasons for the socio-economic problems America and the world are facing. In 2019, COVID-19 was definitely the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back.” But COVID-19 was only a straw. Today’s financial crisis has been brewing for years. Financial crises, like the ones we face today, are nothing new and world history supports that. Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 due to Gresham’s Law. Zimbabwe collapsed due to Gresham’s Law. In 1971, today’s financial crisis began when President Richard Nixon took the U.S. dollar off the gold standard, again violating Gresham’s Law. Today’s financial crisis started in 2008, when the Fed printed trillions in fake U.S. dollars to bail out “too big to fail” banks.” The Fed, in that case, was violating Gresham’s Law. MRS. O’LEARY’S COW Another example of a trigger to a massive disaster took place in 1871 when Mrs. O’Leary’s cow Daisy (as the story goes...) kicked over Mrs. O’Leary’s lantern, igniting her barn and starting The Great Chicago Fire. That fire destroyed 3.5 square miles of the city and left 120 people dead and thousands more homeless. Mrs. O’Leary and Daisy were blamed for the massive fire, yet the facts show that conditions were perfect for a catastrophic fire. Much of the city was built of wood and Chicago was in the grip of a massive drought—both conditions perfect for a catastrophic fire.

THE GROWING GAP In 1871, conditions in Mrs. O’Leary’s barn were perfect for a spark that would ignite The Great Chicago Fire. In 2019, the world was ready for the COVID-19 Great Economic Disaster. COVID-19 was our Daisy, our Mrs. O’Leary’s cow. The economic disaster was going to happen, with or without a Daisy or a COVID-19.

The disaster that COVID-19 exposed was the growing gap—both financial and in terms of happiness— between rich and poor. In addition to income inequality, it is the growing financial unhappiness between the rich and everyone else that is the drought, the straw and the wood for the coming fire. My concern is that the United States may be on the verge of another economic disaster, possibly a Great Fire of 2022. The problem with printing trillions of fake U.S. dollars to pay our bills is that it causes the gap between rich and poor to grow wider. The problem is we keep violating Gresham’s Law. And our schools teach us little if anything about money. The problem is that our academic elite, who know nothing about Gresham’s Law, believe giving poor people fake money will solve our financial problems. I see the history of financial disasters repeating itself because we keep violating Gresham’s law.

CAUSES... AND CONSEQUENCES Dr. Thomas Sowell was born in North Carolina in 1930, grew up in Harlem, New York, served in the Marine Corp during the Korean War, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in 1958, received a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1959, and earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago in 1968, where he was a student of Milton Friedman. Today, Dr. Sowell is an economist and senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. He is an African-American who has a lot to say about politics and the growing income and economic divide. Dr. Sowell is not popular on the left, but he is a darling of the right because he says such things as:

“The problem with printing trillions of fake U.S. dollars to pay our bills is that it causes the gap between rich and poor to grow wider. And our schools teach us little if anything about money.” “Although the big word on the left is ‘compassion’... the big agenda on the left is dependency.” He also says: “When you want to help people, you tell them the truth. When you want to help yourself, you tell them what they want to hear.” I do not know if Dr. Sowell would agree with me or not, but I believe one of the primary reasons for the growing gap between rich, poor, and middle class goes back to Gresham’s Law—bad money driving out good money. I do agree with Dr. Sowell on this point: If we want to help people, we need to tell them the truth. In 1965, when my mom told me she took my canvas bag of silver coins and spent it, I sensed that my family—and the world—was in trouble. I did not have the heart to tell her the truth, the truth being that she did not know the difference between real money and fake money. In 2021, the truth is that most poor people still do not know the difference between real money and fake money. If we do not know the difference between real money and fake money, the gap between rich, poor, and middle class will continue to widen and civil unrest might be only one of many troubling consequences.

TRILLIONS... IN FAKE MONEY In 2021, President Joe Biden is expected to print an additional $4 to $6 trillion in fake U.S. dollars. In 2021, millions of once-productive Americans are now waiting for their “stimi checks.” Who can blame them? Why not wait for free money? As Thomas Sowell said: “When you want to help yourself, you tell them what they want to hear.” Dr. Sowell also says: “The fact that so many successful politicians are such shameless liars is not only a reflection on them... it is also a reflection on us. When the people want the impossible, only liars can satisfy.” I want to point out that I am not pushing a political agenda or a conservative or liberal philosophy. I am not a Republic or a Democrat; I am an Independent. I write simply because, as Dr. Sowell says, “When you want to help people, you tell them the truth.” The facts are that, in 1971, President Nixon’s action that took the U.S. dollar off the gold standard meant that the U.S. dollar became “fiat” money or, more accurately, “fake money.” One reason Donald Trump and I wrote two books together is because most people, even highly educated people like my poor dad and my mom, did not know the difference between real money and fake money. That is why the gap between rich and poor will grow. The problem today is that highly educated people like my mom and dad do not

“President Nixon’s action that took the U.S. dollar off the gold standard meant that the U.S. dollar became “fiat” money or, more accurately, “fake money.” know or understand Gresham’s Law. They do not know the difference between good money and bad money, real money and fake money. This financial ignorance is the crisis. In 1964, I began saving silver and since the mid-1970s I have been saving gold, although it was illegal for Americans to own gold prior to 1974. Gold and silver are ‘god’s money.’ They have been here since the earth was formed. In 2019, as soon as COVID-19 shut down the U.S. economy, I began saving Bitcoin. Bitcoin is ‘people’s money,’ not Central Bank’s money. I trust god’s money and people’s money more than I trust fake money from Central Banks. In 2021, as the U.S. government prints trillions in fake U.S. dollars, I will grow richer as my gold, silver, and cryptocurrency become more valuable. There’s also talk from the Biden camp that the government must raise taxes on the “greedy rich” who “aren’t paying their fair share”—if there is any prayer of paying for the trillions in fake dollars.

Issue 3 . 2021 |

77

Altitude // Finance Thomas Sowell has this to say about “greedy” people: “I have never understood why it is ‘greed’ to want to keep the money you have earned... but not greed to want to take somebody else’s money.” My next book is titled Capitalist Manifesto. I have written it because I am a capitalist. I fought communism in Vietnam as a Marine pilot. In that upcoming book, I post warnings from Marxists like Vladimir Lenin, a person committed to destroying free market capitalism, who said: “The best way to destroy the system is to debauch the currency.” And Karl Marx, who warned: “There is only one way to kill capitalism—by taxes, and more taxes.” REAL NUMBERS . In 1965 the dime my mom spent was worth 10 cents. . In April 2021 that same real dime is worth $1.94.

. In 1965, the quarter my mom spent was worth 25 cents. . In April 2021, that same real quarter is worth $4.85.

. In 1965, the half dollar my mom spent was worth 50 cents. . In April 2021, that same half dollar is worth $9.70.

In 1964, I stopped saving fake money. Instead, I have been saving god’s money, gold and silver and, in 2019, people’s money—Bitcoin. In 1997, The Rich Dad company was founded, dedicated to teaching people—educated or uneducated, rich or poor, young or old, regardless of race, religion, or gender—a subject not taught in school... the subject of money. I’ll close with final words of wisdom from Thomas Sowell: “Ours may become the first civilization destroyed not by our enemies but by the ignorance of our teachers and the dangerous nonsense they are teaching our children. In an age of artificial intelligence, they are creating artificial stupidity.” And: “When you want to help people, you tell them the truth.”

Watch for the release of my new book Capitalist Manifesto – How Entrepreneurs Can Save Capitalism later this summer.

ason Statham wasn’t always a world famous grimacing muscle man. Born in Derbyshire, England, the son of Eileen and Barry Statham, a lounge singer, the rugged leading man first came into the public eye as a model for French Connection clothing brand. In his youth, Statham’s great passion was diving and he went on to finish 12th in the World Championships in 1992 and for twelve years, he was a member of Britain’s National Diving Squad.

It was Guy Ritchie who introduced the brooding brit to big movie audiences with his first major hit Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The director was looking for a street-wise conman when he found out about Statham’s past as a black market salesman. Their collaboration continued in later films shot by Ritchie including Snatch and Revolver. Riding high on the Ritchie notoriety, Statham was able to break into Hollywood with action hits like The Transporter in 2002, successful enough to inspire two sequels. By 2010, Statham had starred alongside fellow action legends including Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li and Mickey Rourke, in The Expendables. He reprised the role of Lee Christmas, a former SAS soldier, in The Expendables 2. At 53, Statham is fit beyond belief, light on his bare feet, and younger looking than his years. Somehow, he always looks wrung out and world-weary. Pissed off and smoldering dark, onyx black eyes. He regards things with a sideways look, often incredulous followed by a twitch of exasperation. He is himself, a cool tough guy to the core. Sure, Statham began his career in earnest as a diver, gymnast and model, but he endeared himself to the world in Guy Ritchie’s swaggering cockney gangster magnum opus. Honestly, with his charm, good looks, and gift-of-the-gab, it was bound to happen. We first fell under the Statham spell in Crank, a perfectly formed and knowingly absurd action movie with a simple premise: the hero needs constant adrenaline. Or he’ll die. It’s Peak Statham. We love the laissez faire he brings to casually blasting his way through the pedestrian trappings of Macy’s and the mundane food court. On the personal side, Jason met his long time love, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, in 2010 at the Coachella Music Festival. The supermodel, actress, and Victoria’s Secret Angel inspired pretty volcanic feelings in Jason and the pair almost immediately started dating. Unlike other celebrity couples, they carefully concealed their relationship and weren’t quick to expose their feelings. After nearly 6 months, the couple began to live together

Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham on the set of Wrath of Man

The Expendables 2

Wrath of Man

and openly go out together. They caught a lot of public speculation and notoriety due to their 20 year age difference. In January 2016, paparazzi snapped a photo of a diamond engagement ring on the model’s finger. The couple later confirmed that they were engaged, but did not comment on the wedding. In autumn of the same year, Rosie appeared on the red carpet with a belly, and in June of 2017 they welcomed their son — Jack Oscar Statham, to their home in the Hollywood Hills. After spending the last few years battling a very fast and furious family, and a 75-foot shark in splashy, big-budget movies, Statham is clearly excited to get back with his onscreen roots. Statham has transformed into one of Hollywood’s go-to action stars and a franchise machine. Wrath of Man is tops on Vudu and Fandango, has earned about as much worldwide as Mortal Kombat, and has a bigger global total than almost any other Statham action movie that is non-franchise, non-ensemble. In that sense, one of this summer’s happiest box office stories has been Ritchie and Statham’s reunion on the action hit. It was the smallest summer kick-off movie, opening with just $8.3 million. But by Jason Statham standards, it’s a huge hit. According to Forbes, that $8.3 million launch was Statham’s first chart-topping solo action flick since Transporter 2 (a $20.5 million FriMon debut over Labor Day weekend) in 2005. It marked the first time a non-franchise Guy Ritchie flick (obviously not counting Aladdin and the Sherlock Holmes duo) had opened at the top of the domestic box office. It was right in the $6-$9 million comfort zone of almost every Statham actioner (Transporter, Crank: High Voltage, Safe, Homefront, The Bank Job, Parker, etc.) that actually got a nationwide theatrical release. Even with theaters operating with limits on capacity and operating hours, Wrath of Man still pulled 100% “business as usual” business.

Once Wrath of Man passed $25 million domestically, it topped the unadjusted domestic grosses of Killer Elite (a $70 million actioner costarring Clive Owen and Robert De Niro) and The Transporter (which helped turn Statham into a household name). Based on the 2004 film Cash Truck, Wrath of Man stars Statham as H, a cold and mysterious stranger hired by a Los Angeles company responsible for moving hundreds of millions of dollars a week. What his new co-workers don’t know is that he’s on the hunt for his son’s murderers. Make no bones about it, Wrath Of Man majorly reaffirms Jason Statham’s bankable worth as an action star. The grimdark flick has also earned $80 million worldwide. Moreover, partially but not entirely thanks to $24 million in China, Wrath of Man is one of the biggestgrossing solo Statham actioners ever. Statham is clearly at the enviable stage of his career where he can pick plum roles, and can also decide what directors to work with. He has a shorthand cinematic language with Guy Ritchie that just seems to get better with age, marinating into a rather marvelous meal of a movie. All the better for fans, who trust him to never ham-hand or overdo the dimensions of the action star. Next up for Statham in the name department is another banger: Orson Fortune. Do you have the fear of public speaking? Why are so many people afraid of public speaking? What are some of the tips to help overcome this common fear? 84

| JetsetMag.com

M

any people can become terrorized and immobilized at even the thought of standing up before others and presenting an unprepared yet formal speech. The fear of public speaking is one of the greatest fears the majority of people ever face. But if they understand the most common reasons for their fear and learn to break through or dissolve these reasons, they will be able to stand up and out with power, present a meaningful message and go on to pursue many more great social achievements.

What exactly is this fear of public speaking that so many people are plagued with? The fear of public speaking actually has little to do with the fear of speaking. People speak fluently to other known people every day without becoming terrorized. It’s not even the fear of speaking in front of a great number of people because many have achieved this during their schooling or career paths. The fear of public speaking boils down to the fear of speaking in front of people that the speaker assumes or perceives to have something they don’t, or at least more than they perceive themselves to have. Although there are other, specific, individual fears that can also become associated with or underlie the fear of public speaking, there are seven primary reasons underlying the most common form of public speaking fear. The first reason is the fear of speaking before others who are perceived to have more intelligence, more specialized knowledge or more degrees than they do. So, if you are a high school student and you look out into the audience and see a prestigious college professor who is an expert on the subject you’re about to present about, you’ll have a higher probability of the fear of speaking out. Because anytime you exaggerate somebody outside of you, you’ll subordinate or minimize yourself on the inside. As long as you live in their shadows you’ll be afraid to stand upon their shoulders.

“If you can stand up and speak concisely and clearly and move an audience and have them discover their mission and have them reach out and inspire others and impact millions across the world, you rise up into the top .032 percent of the world.”

The second reason is the fear of speaking before others who are perceived to be more successful in business and have achieved more, resulting in comparing yourself to them and minimizing yourself and exaggerating their achievements. So if you are speaking on business success in front of people who have multinational corporations and you’ve just started your mom-and-pop business, you could possibly compare yourself and think you’re not as successful. When you minimize yourself to others, you will tend to withdraw and hold back from confidently speaking out and sharing what is inside. The third reason is the fear of speaking before people who are perceived to be more financially savvy, wealthier and more affluent than you. If you’re talking about how to become wealthy and financially independent, you’ll probably feel intimidated and minimized compared to those more abundant. Speaking out about something that you are not highly confident about, particularly in front of those perceived to be more adept on the topic, can make you hesitate in your speech. The fourth reason is the fear of speaking before people that are perceived to be more stable or impressive in their family dynamic. So if you were speaking on family or relationship issues in front of somebody that has fulfilled a stable 40-year marriage while you have just become married or have already had three divorces, you would probably be intimidated because you’re comparing yourself to those assumed to be more masterful, knowledgeable or stable in the field. The fifth reason is the fear of speaking before people that are perceived to be more socially powerful, more influential and more respected than you. Once you compare yourself and subordinate to them and/or feel intimidated by them, your resultant fear of rejection

Altitude // Inspire from a larger social group can impede your full vocal expression. You will tend to quietly listen to those you look up to and speak boldly before those you look down upon or who look up to you. The sixth reason is the fear of speaking before people that are perceived to be healthier and more beautiful than you, or who have more knowledge or skill in those particular fields, particularly when you are presenting on the topics of health and beauty. I once remember observing an overweight lady confidently speaking about the importance of loving yourself until she suddenly spotted a really fit, stunning, beautifully dressed and well packaged and empowered woman walk into the hotel ballroom where she was presenting. The moment the lady perceived the more empowered woman walk in, she suddenly became less fluent, hesitant, thrown off track and less confident in her presentation. The whole audience even noticed and turned around to look at the more empowered woman. The seventh reason is the fear of speaking before people that are perceived to be more spiritually aware, or have a higher so-called moral standard, or are higher up in the ranks of whatever you and they perceive to be spirituality. The moment you subordinate to those who you feel to be superior, you will close down and withdraw from revealing your inspiring message. The moment you perceive or think that others have more than you in any of these seven areas of life, you will tend to withdraw and become less empowered for fear of what they might think of you. Whenever you assume that other’s opinions of you are more important than your own opinion, you will tend to draw back into your shell for protection. You’ll have the fear of speaking out before others when you perceive yourself to be less influential or powerful than any or all of them in any or all of these seven areas of life. The underlying reasons for fears of public speaking all boil down to subordinating to those you perceive and feel have something you don’t. So when you minimize yourself to them or exaggerate them, your ability to fluently and confidently speak will diminish. In many cases, when you combine more than one or even all seven fears together when you look out at an audience and think that some of them are more intelligent, more successful, wealthier, more stable in relationships,

more influential, healthier and more spiritually moral, the fear of public speaking will probably overcome you. We are not here to live in the shadows of anyone; we are here to stand on the shoulders of giants. To overcome these fears, it’s wise to then ask yourself where and when you demonstrate these same traits in some form within yourself to the same degree as you perceive in others. The moment you can identify these same traits or skills and own them to the same degree quantitatively and qualitatively and see yourself as an equal, your fear will subside and you can fluently share your message of inspiration. What you perceive in others lies within. You are simply too humble to admit you have it to the same degree. You would not recognize these admired traits in others without them lying dormant, unrecognized or hidden within. There is nothing missing in you; you have all the traits of greatness you will ever see in others. You just have not recognized or acknowledged their unique forms. The moment you discover how nothing’s missing within you through reflecting upon and owning these traits you admire in others to the same degree, you’ll awaken greater confidence and a feeling of a mission and boldly share your message before others. By realizing that there is nothing missing within, you can overcome the fear of public speaking and let out the powerful message lying dormant inside and allow your inherent leader to emerge on a

If you can stand up and speak concisely and clearly and move an audience and have them discover their mission and have them reach out and inspire others, you rise up into the top .16 percent of the world. f you’re a die-hard racing enthusiast like me and the chance to drive a certified race car sits high atop your wish list, the BMW Performance Driving School’s M4 GT4 Experience at the Thermal Club outside Palm Springs, California, is a must-do bucket list item. Included in the full day racing experience are a variety of performance driving activities in an impressive selection of BMW M vehicles. From seat time on the school’s challenging autocross course (complete with a time trial session for the ultimate bragging rights among your group), to high-speed laps on the Club’s 1.8 mile South Palm course, the new M4 GT4 racing program affords the perfect opportunity to experience what makes the legendary German sports car brand the ultimate driving machine. Along with time behind the wheel of BMW’s revolutionary M2, M4, and all-new M5 LCI vehicles, the program’s top-speed session allows passionate drivers to take control of the brand’s trophy-winning M4 GT4 race car. The race-spec M4 model features substantial weight reduction and aerodynamics upgrades, with up to 431 horsepower at the ready from the brand’s tried and true twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine delivering power to the M4 GT4’s sticky Hankook racing tires. Once the school’s pro drivers help each guest get properly positioned behind the wheel before exiting the pits, lead-follow laps quickly increase in speed with each pass of the finish line, while coaches provide expert-level advice and feedback throughout the session. The M4 GT4’s racing controls can seem overwhelming at first glance, but the intuitive race car proves to be an easy-to-use platform for even novice drivers. And the “push to talk” button is sure to make any driver feel like a true professional as they communicate with the school’s racing experts through their helmet’s builtin headset. A day of training at the Thermal Club provides a fantastic introduction to the world of BMW racing. For those who consider themselves one step above novice, we suggest you try the M4 GT4 private coaching course with its 250 miles of high-performance lapping. It’s the ultimate opportunity to experience the thrill of driving a BMW race car at one of the nation’s premier performance racing schools. Read our full review at JetsetMag.com. | JetsetMag.com

Drive: Cara Delevigne shot in Arches National Park, Utah, 2021

Issue 3 2 . 2021 |

93

Takeoff // Profile

Bonnie Creede, Colorado, USA - 2021

SP: In South Sudan, where you photographed the Dinka people engulfed in cattle, dust and shadows on the career-defining shoot of Mankind, describe the visceral feeling that remains with you to this day, the rush or adrenaline of capturing civilization in this sense. DY: I had a preconception of the image that I wanted to return home with – something that conveyed the raw enormity of a Dinka cattle camp in an elemental and biblical setting. Something timeless and vast. Like a Rembrandt, I wanted people to be able to look at the picture for hours and find new stories each time. I think at that moment in time I had three emotions. Firstly, I knew that our research had paid off. Secondly, I was worried about walking across the Nile in the dark with crocodiles, and thirdly, I wanted to go home and get some much needed sleep!

94

SP: A major economic preoccupation in the 19th and early 20th century American West, the cattle drive has been glorified in mythology and culture as an eternal symbol of the American spirit. The Thundering Herd gives us an unflinching, atmospheric sense of the scale and intensity of the drive. How did observing and engaging with Texas wranglers Craig Carter and Ryon Marshall inform your photographic captures of the complexities beyond our collective cowboy mythology? DY: First, the whole thing played to my purism in its conception. This is cowboy country in its purest sense. They are working cowboys,

| JetsetMag.com

and to me, it is crucial to do cowboy culture justice as I have massive respect for it. Whilst I can’t say I identify with cowboy culture, I highly respect their work ethic, decency and manners.

SP: Cara Delevingne has said that she loves working with you because you are the epitome of an artist, going above and beyond to capture a moment in its true essence. She says, “he makes me feel safe and inspired whilst always producing a visual feast.” How has your ability to establish rapport with human subjects evolved over the years? DY: It’s all about trust. If you are working with extraordinary people whose time is an opportunity cost, you can’t let them down. You have to make sure that their days working with you are happy, good and memorable. If you can combine the removal of stress with art creation, there’s more chance of them coming back to work with you. And like most things in life, I think you get better as you get older because you learn from what he didn’t do quite right before.

SP: What is it about Cara’s particular acumen that makes her a chameleon capable of collaborations that may capsize a lesser model? DY: She’s unique, authentic, and in many respects, in a league of her own. I am humbled to have worked with her over the years. The problem of working with the likes of Cara is that it is hard to exceed the product of any other collaboration.

The American Dream Canyonlands, Utah, USA - 2021

SP: Hitchcock inspired one of my all-time most consciousnessexpanding moments as a young art writer standing in a gallery. Douglas Gordon’s, 24 Hour Psycho. Your 2020 work, The Birds, also influenced by the late auteur, has me itching to see the genuine article. In the age of Google Image Search, where I can access a considerable body of your work as 2 inch expandable thumbnails, a contemporary condition that can leave us feeling freakishly phenomenal and absurdly empty all at once. I perhaps naively hope that the viewing experience will always matter, no matter how much the analog world becomes extinct or passé. Given this, what hotel or private entity has presented your work most interestingly or impressively to your eyes? DY: The Thompson in Dallas, which is as close to a six-star hotel there is anywhere in Dallas. They have 50 of my works on show. But I guess the piece that gets the most referrals, because it gets so much footfall, is the Cindy Crawford piece in Sass Cafe in Monaco.

96

SP: With your visually arresting images literally raising monumentally significant sums for conservation, you have emerged as one of the most relevant photographers of your generation. In what sense have you enjoyed wielding this positive influence most? What communities are you proudest for supporting and assisting with your charitable giving? DY: My proudest contribution is towards the pediatric Cancer Care Hospital in Wisconsin, a collaboration with Cindy Crawford, where we’ve now raised over a million dollars. Helping any charity is

| JetsetMag.com

Ain’t My First Rodeo Texas, USA - 2021

a privilege, but given Cindy’s personal connection - this cause was of significant importance.

SP: Your accomplishment at staged storytelling has set the gold standard very high. I find a chilling cinematic syntax to your still images that evokes the moods of Stan Douglas, Christian Marclay, Richard Prince. What were some of the narrative art house or mainstream feature films that stirred your young imagination? DY: My heroes are Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott and Clint Eastwood. They all have many things in common. That’s work ethic, making screen sweat, but most of all, emotional engagement. I have a lot to learn as a storyteller, and I still am gripped by their every scene.

SP: I found your tribute to Peter Beard via Instagram so deeply soulful and stirring. Incinerating the rule book was his play book. You have that same irreverent streak. Who do you see on the horizon, say under the age of 30, that excites you as much as the epiphany you felt being in Peter’s gallery in your 20s? DY: As a father of two kids under the age of 21, I would encourage them to look to Emerald Fennell, who won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for her film, A Promising Young Woman. I know her dad well. I can’t think of a dad more proud of a daughter than Emerald’s. Her chosen star in the film has got to be the most promising and talented British actress of her generation, Cary Mulligan. The two together are an example for everyone who is growing up and wishing to get involved in the arts.

The Thundering Herd Texas, USA - 2021

SP: You write so eloquently on Peter in the Instagram caption: “Peter was a photographer who had contempt for photography; a diarist whose densely adorned volumes have influenced artists and writers as disparate as Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Truman Capote. Above all, he was unique - a sacred word.⁣“ As such a gifted writer, give us a few opening lines on Tom Brady if you had to return the favor. Speaking of which, is there an interesting backstory for how Tom Brady and Cindy Crawford came to write the Foreword and Afterword to your latest book? DY: No, but I’m very flattered that they have. They’re both successful people who have always seen the benefits of collaboration. It’s nice to be dragged up by people rather than dragged down, and they set a high bar of commitment to excellence.

SP: A thoroughbred’s imposing proportions — a sublime orchestration of sinewy muscles and brawny bones — are much easier to admire without the distortions of a heated race. As you “freeze” animals

associated with speed - horses, lions, and wolves - does this play into your sense of composition? DY: As a still photographer, I have no choice but to freeze motion. The only thing I have control over is where I freeze the motion. That decision will be taken with regard to emotion but also to the glorification of the animal. I am a romanticist before I am anything else.

SP: Over the years, have you developed a sixth sense when it comes to location scouting? Who or what has been the most useful tool or resource when it comes to this? DY: I don’t know whether it’s a sixth sense, but we will not settle on a location until we know it’s absolutely right. In many ways, I’m guided by filmmakers like the Coen brothers, who want to make sure that the backdrop is an additive, not an afterthought. If you stage a shot, you have all the cards in your hand, so it would be a crime to ever settle for something that’s not perfect.

Chambers Bay is easily one of the most photogenic golf courses in the United States and this image comes from my very favorite spot on the entire property. With train tracks and the “Lone Fir” looming in the backdrop, Chambers Bay is a truly unique scene for an exceptional golf course. You don’t always have to be taking photos of the world’s best golf courses to capture a beautiful moment, like this little gem from Costa Mesa Country Club in CA.

Often heralded as the very best course in the entire world, Royal County Down in Ireland gives the golfer everything that one could dream of. Beauty, challenge, variety, and playing conditions are the very best on the entire planet.

When you survey a course pre-production, what influences your approach to the shoot? I look for interesting features. I look for elevated perches that provide a compelling vantage point. Most importantly, I look for the way the light hits the golf course, sunrise and sunset lighting is the most important factor.

What golf course designers really speak to your photographic sensibility? Tom Fazio builds a beautiful golf course, but they can be somewhat predictable. Pete Dye gives you wild and bold features that can be a lot of fun to shoot, even the golden age architects provide interesting bunkers that photograph well from elevation. Every architect that has had some success has something worth highlighting in a photograph.

Compositionally speaking, describe some of the elements you most enjoy finding on a golf course. It’s the elements that I don’t expect that usually delight me. A surprise that makes you go, oh yeah, that’s it! Like the mountain range behind the Devil’s Cauldron in Banff. I wasn’t expecting it to be so bold. It’s always the one of a kind features that are most excellent. | JetsetMag.com

How has the advent and increasing sophistication of drones affected your photography practice? It makes a massive difference. I incorporate drone photography into just about every photoshoot that I do. The angles in the sky are almost infinite and provide a whole new range of possibilities. A golf moment that sparked a major life idea or solution. 2018’s RGV Tour was a major turning point in my life. After that tour, I gave up my sales job and pursued a career in golf. So far, I haven’t had to go back to the corporate grind. Celebrated golf courses that have truly lived up to the hype. Cypress Point, Oakmont, NGLA, Merion.

Is golf with Bill Murray, a national treasure in our book, as hilarious as it seems? Does he have a stronger long game or short game? Every bit as good as advertised. Bill’s game fluctuates wildly, sometimes he chips like Jesus and then he lays the sod over one. Sometimes he bombs it down the middle, other times he bombs it into the houses wide right.
