ell, with the presidential election season mercifully over, I think it’s fair to say that you all deserve some serious indulgences. How about an ultra-luxurious ski trip to Vail, or a golf excursion to Hawaii to play on the world’s most pristine and exclusive courses? If active vacations aren’t your thing, perhaps a visit to one of the continent’s most lavish and innovative suites, or a private estate villa in Jamaica just minutes from the FBO better suits your needs? Regardless of what your travel preferences are, this issue of Jetset will help you find a way to treat yourself or someone you love with something special. In addition to our comprehensive list of the finest wine, spirits, cigars, and champagnes around, our annual Holiday Gift Guide will surely give you some great ideas. Of course, we also have some unbelievable cars, experiences, and one amazing yacht, as well as many tremendous profiles of accomplished people from all backgrounds. We find out just what drives “Millionaire Mentor” and business guru Dan Lok. We sit down with the biggest action star in Hong-Kong and star of the new Star Wars movie, Donnie Yen. And we go in-depth with famed celebrity portrait photographer Jesse Dittmar. And as always, our esteemed contributors have provided many pages of valuable, astute insight and analysis that can only be found right here. But back to the election. We’d like to point out that there was another one that took place in 2016 that was a lot more fun, and certainly a life-changer for not only our winner, but countless children across the country who really needed assistance. Yes, we are talking of course about the second-annual Miss Jetset competition, and we’re celebrating our new Miss Jetset, Australia native Laura Lydall, and her great accomplishment in this issue and online at Jetsetmag.com. Here’s a couple numbers we wanted to share from our search for Miss Jetset that are truly impressive: We started the competition with nearly 12,000 women from around the world vying for the crown who had a collective social media reach of over 1,000,000,000 people. Once again, our winner received $100,000 in cash and prizes and we flew her out in a private jet for a glamorous photo shoot, but this year we also threw one epic party to celebrate her and all of the incredible women who competed. But here’s our favorite number: $237,000. That was the amount of the check that, because of the contest, Jetset CEO and Publisher Darrin Austin was able to present to the incredible Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation which provides financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer nationwide. In summary, it was an election that featured some tremendous contestants and in the process helped out a large group of people and was hailed as an inspiration and success worldwide. It would have been nice if we were able to have more of those in 2016, but we’re extremely proud to be responsible for at least one.

FINALLY, A BENTLEY WITH SOUL. BY LOGAN KUGLER AND AJAY SHAH
T
he 2016 GT3-R is fantastically unlike any road car you’ve ever seen from Bentley. We know Bentleys as luxury sedans that go wicked fast, soak up all the bumps in the road, and are incredibly quiet. But your entire perspective of Bentley will get rocked with the GT3-R, a very limited production model — only 99 are being produced for the United States (300 total worldwide) — that is as exciting as it is luxurious. It starts as soon as you get in. You’re greeted by one of the most elegantly-designed interiors you’ll find in an automobile. The vibrant, lizard green stitching and diamond-quilted seats are delightful, but what really gets your attention is the sheer amount of carbon fiber. There’s more carbon fiber in the cockpit than in any other car I’ve ever seen, price no object. Even the engine bay is loaded with carbon fiber. Close the door and the seatbelt arm generously extends the clasp suggesting that “You’ll probably want to buckle up for this ride.”
18
JETSETMAG.COM
Then you turn the key and put your foot down. It’s a 3.3 second 0-60 mph launch on paper, but in reality (and thanks to allwheel drive), it feels even quicker than that. Launches are brutally, ludicrously fast and will delight your passengers at every stoplight. And on throttle lift-off, you’re rewarded with glorious burbles and pops from the exhaust that is unlike any sound a Bentley’s made before. The company seems to have taken a page from the magnificent-sounding Jaguar F-Type’s playbook. Sometimes it’s a 21gun salute, other times it’s just one big field cannon boom. And these sounds get louder and more frequent in a beautiful crescendo the longer you drive and the hotter the exhaust tubes become. It’s like the most well-orchestrated symphony in the world and you are the conductor. The acceleration, braking, and exhaust sound are all so sublimely harmonious that you’ll find yourself addicted to stop signs and red lights — normally a driver’s nemeses — just so you can stop, accelerate to 60, and do it all over again. The Audisourced, twin-turbo V8 is rated at 572 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, but an overboost function pumps power up to 592 hp for 15 seconds, to get you up to 135 mph in a hurry. As hinted at, braking is exceptional. Gargantuan, 16.5-inch eight-piston carbon ceramic calipers bring the nearly 5,000-pound machine from 70 mph to a dead stop in just 159 feet. That’s only four feet more than it takes for a McLaren 650S to stop, and that weighs
“It’s like the most well-orchestrated symphony in the world and you are the conductor.” a ton less. The GT3-R’s all-wheel drive system sends 60 percent of power to the rear wheels under normal driving, but during performance driving it will automatically transfer up to 85 percent of power to the rear. Drawbacks? There aren’t many, but the car only seats two, as there’s no real backseat. The consolation prize is the massive trunk — possibly the largest in any vehicle that can reach 60 mph this side of three and a half seconds. Also, the infotainment system is in desperate need of an update; it’s slow and a little cumbersome, while the absence of a USB port in a $341,000 car is unconscionable in this day and age. (Perhaps you can plunk down a few grand to have a custom car audio shop rip it out and install an iPad mini in its place, as I once did inside of a Porsche.) Nevertheless, don’t let a few minor setbacks prevent you from experiencing one of the most exhilarating and elegant vehicles ever assembled, as this is one exceptional, soulful piece of machinery.

HODGDON YACHTS 10.5 METER CUSTOM LIMOUSINE TENDER BY MATTHEW VON DAVEN
F
or 200 years now, Hodgdon Yachts has built their sterling reputation by designing breathtaking (water) works-of-art. Their Custom Tenders division adeptly blends tradition and technology and is world-renowned for their innovative design methods, meticulous craftsmanship, enviable performance — all of which are on proud display in their striking new 10.5m Limousine Tender. With its eye-catching design, dramatic paint scheme, and chic leather and specialty wood veneer interior, this beauty is built to elegantly stand out. A vast majority of the tender’s stainless steel exterior — including Hodgdon’s signature flush anchor — are custom-built. And the way they combine handcrafted woodworking with modern composite materials and ingenious hull design results in a lightning-fast ride that is still somehow silky smooth, quiet, and comfortable.
20
JETSETMAG.COM
“As a superyacht builder ourselves, Hodgdon is uniquely positioned to bring superyacht building standards to the tender world,” said Timothy Hodgdon, President of Hodgdon Yachts. This is apparent as soon as you step aboard their latest creation. It has all the little elegant luxury accents, amenities, and refinements that yacht owners have come to expect when at sea. The 10.5m Limousine Tender is designed to comfortably seat up to 11 guests. The port and starboard side windows power down to allow easy access in and out of the boat, and a hydraulic salon hardtop lifts for full-height headroom and 360 degrees of visibility. Once inside, you and your privileged guests will enjoy a Rolls-Royceesque smooth and quiet ride, high definition entertainment system, and comprehensive climate control. Orders available now.

Takeoff // Cruise
Yachting Minus the Hassle BY greg fahlman
J
ust one voyage aboard a Crystal Cruises’ new Esprit yacht and it is easy to see why the company is the world’s most awarded luxury cruise line. Everything — and I do mean everything — from the food to the entertainment to the butler service, is opulent down to the last detail. Being aboard the Crystal Espirit is less like being on a traditional cruise (with their massive crowds of noisy tourists and barely four-star cuisine) and more like private yachting aboard the most well-appointed luxury vessel you have stepped foot on.
22
JETSETMAG.COM
Crystal Espirit houses just 62 very fortunate guests, providing a most intimate luxury seafaring experience. The focus of the ship is carefully curated, seven-day adventures on either the Mediterranean or Adriatic coasts. These journeys allow travelers to venture places that most giant cruise ships cannot travel, and each itinerary is designed to create the most memorable and exciting experience imaginable. I was privileged enough to embark on this majestic ship for an incredible, seven-night tour of the Adriatic — starting in Game of Thrones locale Dubrovnik and commencing in resplendent Venice — and (even as an admittedly-jaded Jetset staffer), I was impressed at almost every turn. I never expect much from cruise ship rooms (even the suites), but this was actually a quite inspired lodging. The décor feels modern, and the beds offer fine linens and elegant, tufted leather headboards. Beside them you’ll find an iPad with a digital directory, and there are two large, custom-designed closets with integrated lighting. The bathroom features a glass-enclosed rain-shower, striking backlit mirrors over double vanity sinks, natural stone flooring, and bath and shower amenities from Italian fashion house ETRO. But while the standard rooms are more than fine, as a Jetset reader, you may want

to opt for the stately Owner’s Suite. With twice the size as a standard suite — 515 square feet — it provides ample space to entertain, with a four-seat dining table, sofa, bar, fridge, and more. Yet as decent as the rooms are, what really elevates the living experience aboard the ship to ultra-luxury territory are the butler and concierge services. While the ship boasts almost fifty percent more staff than guests — and each is deeply devoted to making your experience as blissful as possible — no one will make your stay richer than your devoted butler. Come back from a day of invigorating activities to find your room immaculate and your evening’s attire laid out atop the pressed sheets. Pick up the phone and they are there in mere moments to make whatever request you may have a reality. It is lavish service like this that really elevates the Crystal Yacht experience. Nevertheless, you really won’t be spending much of your time aboard the vessel in your suite. Aside from the well-thought activities at each port (each designed to give you the best possible insight into each diverse city’s unique local culture), the ship also boasts a vast array of water activities and amenities for you to try out. These include a submarine for two (plus pilot), two 10-passenger zodiacs, a 12-passenger Wider 32-foot sport yacht, jet skis, water skis, ocean kayaks, a wakeboard, snorkel equipment, and more. The staff will work with you to devise an itinerary that is as adventurous as possible. Rather stay on the ship to get your exercise? The stateJETSETMAG.COM
of-the-art Technogym is very well-appointed and offers yoga, meditation, and pilates classes. As for dining, Crystal claims “Michelin Star-level” quality, and I am proud to say that is no hyperbole. The main dining room, The Yacht Club, is simply exquisite. There you’ll find both modern and classic specialties for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; bespoke tasting menus imagined by Crystal’s award-winning chefs; and the finest and freshest local ingredients available. For a quicker, less formal option, The Terrace and Patio Café has freshly-prepared, regionally-inspired, presentations of small plates, creative salads, gourmet charcuterie, and pastries. The Grill features a simple menu of burgers, wraps and – whenever possible – tapas-style “global street food” reflective of the places you’ve visited. Furthermore, all the bars and lounges offer high-end spirits and solid wine selections. The Pantry is a fine, 24-hour, self-service bistro and wine bar, The Cove is a great place to grab a cocktail any time of day, and the al fresco Sunset Bar and Grill on the ship’s top deck has utterly spectacular sunset views. Unlike with most cruises, by the end of your trip, you will still be craving the ship’s cuisine, and never tiring of soaking in the on-ship atmosphere. In fact, the highest compliment one could pay to cruise line is to say they wished they could stay aboard the ship after their journey’s conclusion. And in the case of Crystal Espirit, you will most certainly be saying just that.

Known for its Michael Graves-designed winery, Clos Pegase’s “Hommage” series are tributes to different artists, and the wonderful 2010 features the work of abstract artist Maria Elena Vieira da Silva. This rich, complex, age-worthy Napa Cabernet is available in 1.5 magnums perfect for large gatherings this holiday season. ClosPegase.com
Miner Family’s signature bottle is this unique, mysterious, silky wonder. This full-bodied, Bordeaux-style blend (its mostly Cab) is tantalizing down to the last drop. Floral layers and hints of decadent chocolate interplay harmoniously with raspberry and dark cherry creating a true experience for your palette. Minerwines.com
Simply put, the best sparkling rosé on the planet. Armand de Brignac’s tantalizing, fullflavored, and aromatic bouquet puts so many other acclaimed, smaller-batch rosés to shame and is the reason why a Nebuchadnezzar (15L) fetches up to $100,000 at the hottest nightclubs. There is simply never a wrong time to crack one of these magnificent pink bottles. ReserveBar.com

The Estate Villa Lifestyle at The Tryall Club
T
here’s no shortage of reasons to plan a tropical getaway to Jamaica. After all, there are those mesmerizing turquoise seas. The great golf. The pristine beaches. And that mouthwatering Caribbean cuisine. But did you know you can also find inspiration here? Author Ian Fleming was living in Jamaica when he created his larger-than-life character James Bond, so just imagine what you could be inspired to do when you visit here. Of course, you’ll need an inspiring place to stay, and we highly recommend The Tryall Club, a collection of private estate villas nestled on 2,200 acres on the northwestern tip of the island. The Club is located just 30 minutes from Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, and the airport offers a full range of FBO facilities and services.
44
JETSETMAG.COM
When you arrive at The Tryall Club, you can expect to be greeted with gracious hospitality, luxurious accommodations, and the kind of tranquil, postcard-perfect beauty that is mandatory for any successful Caribbean vacation. One of your options is Point of View, a sixbedroom estate villa set on the summit of Barnes Hill complete with sweeping panoramic vistas. Even the master bath has a stunning view. The bathtub — which also has an outdoor shower — takes the simple act of bathing to a whole new level, and is set in front of louvered doors that can be opened to reveal the valley below. You might find it impossible to resist the villa’s spacious veranda that overlooks the infinity pool, lawns, lush gardens, and ocean beyond. It’s the ideal place to sit back and relax, and you won’t have to lift a finger. Your experience at Point of View will include the services of two housekeepers, a chef, a laundress, two butlers, and
four gardeners. And this is just one of many estate villas you’ll have to choose from. And when you’re not relaxing, you’ll find plenty to do at The Club. The 18-hole, 6,800 yard Tryall Golf Club winds through the estate, and will challenge you with natural hazards like the tradewinds that you’ll have to compensate for. The nine-court Tennis Club has been ranked amongst the finest in the Caribbean, and features both Agile Turf and Nova Cushion surfaces along with skilled, certified pros on hand to give you pointers. You just might need them, if only to distract you from the spectacular hilltop views. And since the ideal island vacation should include plenty of water sports, you’ll have Hobie Cats, kayaks, parasailing, wakeboarding, water skiing, tubing, and paddle boarding to choose from (not to mention a full PADI scuba diving program). And should you have a
day when those activities sound like they might just take too much effort, you can always enjoy a relaxing ride in a glass-bottom boat. Naturally, all of this activity (or inactivity, as the case may be) will help you work up an tremendous appetite. Set in the resort’s 18th century Great House, The Great House Restaurant offers the Club’s signature dining experience, thanks to the Jamaicaninfluenced, international cuisine of Executive Chef Ansel Beason. With starters like Sandy Bay roasted pumpkin bisque and entrees such as Charbroiled Aged Angus Ribeye Steak Flamed with Appleton Reserved Gold Rum or Plantain-Crusted Red Snapper, you certainly won’t lack for sustenance. And if you love dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients, you’re in luck, as The Club has its own organic garden, which you
can even arrange to have a private dinner at. And that’s just one of several private dining experiences The Club offers. And when you’re ready to mingle, you won’t want to miss the Monday night beach barbecues with live Jamaican entertainment or the Reggae nights every Thursday. Of course, it takes no small effort to preserve the pristine natural beauty and wildlife of this treasured location on the Jamaican coast. The Tryall Club is so committed to protecting the environment that it has earned Green Globe certification every year since 2010 for meeting the exacting standards of sustainable tourism. Ian Fleming was definitely on to something when he came to Jamaica. Now it’s time to experience this island for yourself — at the estate villa of your choice at The Tryall Club. Tryallclub.com

When most of us hear about overwater bungalows, they’re located at resorts in tucked-away destinations like Bora Bora. Typically, getting to these locales from the US requires hours upon hours of travel time. So when the opportunity presented itself to experience this very rare luxury concept while cutting the travel time in half by flying just a few hours direct to Cancun, I simply couldn’t resist. And after experiencing this remarkable getaway, I can tell you with sincerity that if the opportunity presented itself again, I wouldn’t miss the chance to recharge at this magical beachfront paradise. Upon arrival at El Dorado Maroma, I instantly found the staff to be warm and welcoming, while the check-in was seamless. Immediately I felt as though all levels of my senses were engaged. The grounds were meticulously manicured with coconut-bordered walkways, lush tropical plants, indigenous flowers, giant palm trees, and come-lie-onme hammocks so enticing, I couldn’t resist lying down for a moment to savor the perfect vantage of white sand beachfront and pictureperfect water elegantly shimmering in the distance beyond the gentlyswaying palm trees. I soon noticed a clear demonstration that this was a far cry from those prototypical overpopulated family vacation resorts, as there were no shortage of adult beverage stations around, and no sounds of children crying in the background — just the sweet symphony JETSETMAG.COM
of paradise. As time progressed, my senses became engulfed in its alluring concerto: The soothing sensation of water trickling all around. The subtle, rhythmic beat of tropical music from afar. The calming sea breeze. The crisp, rejuvenating ocean air. All these things coalesced elegantly to entrance me. Just then, I looked beyond the vast pools with swim-up bars to see the word “hola” crafted from coconuts on the ground. As I continued down the charming resort walkway, smiling faces of the amenable staff were eager to say their native hello and welcome guests to this unique paradise. It was then that I realized I was right where I needed to be. The bungalows themselves are surreal dwellings from another time. They sit nestled in rows atop a vast dock, the crystalline turquoise waters of Maroma Beach glittering beneath them. In the distance there is nothing but paradise and breathtaking, 360-degree views and majestic sunsets as far as the eye can see. The dock itself was like a regal red carpet inviting me to the bungalows. Designed with the utmost privacy and relaxation in mind, each bungalow is equipped with a fully-functional layout: There’s a foyer-like entry and dining area, walkway of glass floors to admire the radiant movement of the ocean, and a luxurious beach bed overlooking a private oversized balcony equipped with a deck so you can soak up sun in admiration of those spectacular, shimmering ocean views.
“Every meal exceeded my expectations; each was truly delectable, and I was simply blown away by the elegant presentations.” With direct access to the ocean from your balcony, at any time of day you can enjoy a dip in the Caribbean waters and return to your bungalow in complete privacy. An indoor jacuzzi, indoor/outdoor showers, your own personal outdoor spa, soft, ambient lighting, flatscreen TVs, and Bose sound systems are all on hand to further elevate your supreme level of relaxation. With inviting seating areas and ample closet, drawer, and vanity space, the bungalows contain everything you need to remain blissfully comfortable during your stay. And with your own personal butler and gourmet dining at your fingertips twenty-four hours a day, you might feel tempted to remain in your own private hideaway for the duration of your time in paradise. But if you do manage to make it out of your bungalow, the resort contains three majestic pools, four bars, and six premier restaurants. El Dorado Maroma carefully selected Chef Julio Gomez, a visionary culinary mind to spearhead their team in the kitchen. His efforts are felt
in sublime and savory dishes such as gourmet tuna toro, consommé, risotto, tagliatelle, sea bass, short rib, and vanilla cheesecake. Every meal exceeded my expectations; each was truly delectable, and I was simply blown away by the elegant presentations. As for on-site activities, the resort offers everything from dance lessons to cooking classes, yoga to pilates, bocce to beach volleyball. And if you’re in the mood for something more exhilarating, just ask your personal butler to book an activity like ATVing, speed boating, or horseback riding through the resort’s tremendous Maroma Adventures program. I was also very impressed with the live entertainment every night and the exceptional spa located just steps from my bungalow with treatment rooms overlooking the pristine ocean (indoor or more private settings are also available). In summation, the Palafitos Overwater Bungalows at El Dorado Maroma is unlike any other resort experience I’ve had. While its à la carte dining, adults-only edict, premium alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, full-service concierge, and 24-hour room service are all fantastic, what truly sets the resort apart is it’s setting — how often do you get to sleep above the ocean in such an idyllic locale? And with the relatively close location and rates starting at just $950 per person, per night, living in paradise has never been more accessible. Karismahotels.com ISSUE 4 . 2016

The same can be said about the resort’s unbelievable Plantation Course. Consistently ranked as the number one golf course in all of Hawaii, it is sure to be on any golfer’s bucket list, and (as its name might imply) unfurls graciously across the resort’s natural geographic formations and pineapple plantation fields — offering dramatic views of jungle foliage, ocean vistas, and rugged rolling terrain from virtually every hole. Designed on a grand scale by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore to embrace its location along the slopes of the West Maui Mountains, the course features 400-yard drives, strong trade winds, downhill approach shots, bump and runs, and the widest fairways I’ve ever played.
The Plantation Course - Hole #18
Home of the PGA Tour each January, the Plantation has played host to the likes of Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, and Vijay Singh. Its lengthy, 7,411-yard Par-73 layout challenges even the most seasoned pros, and yet its wide fairways and generous greens make it accessible for the novice golfer. With dramatic elevation changes, this course offers plenty of downhill tee shots. A perfect example is the aggressively-sloping 18th where (regardless of skill set) you’ll
feel like a pro when hitting one of the longest drives of your life. It remains the course’s signature hole and the iconic view down its fairway and out to the shimmering ocean has been famous since the PGA Tour started kicking off its season at Kapalua. When you’re not playing like a pro, you’ll feel well accomidated at the Ritz. The hotel’s 463 rooms and suites are spaciously appointed and feature hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, and vibrant islandinspired décor. There are six dining experiences on-site, many featuring local ingredients from the resort’s sustainable organic garden. I was particularly impressed by The Banyan Tree, a spectacular, open-air, ocean-view restaurant featuring fresh fish and innovative cocktails. And of course the resort’s luxurious, 17,500-square-foot spa offers impeccable service, private outdoor gardens, spacious couples’ cabanas, and a vast array of rejuvenating treatments. Other on-property and nearby recreational activities include tennis, basketball, swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, sailing, kayaking, outrigger canoeing, stand-up paddling, whale watching, snorkeling, and hiking. And if that’s not enough, the resort’s revolutionary new Jean-Michel Cousteau-sponsored Ambassadors of the Environment program offers an experience unlike any other. The “Cities Under the Sea” excursion allows you to swim amongst majestic sea turtles and schools of neon-colored yellow tang and zebra fish while exploring vast living communities of fish, coral, under the guidance of a seasoned “naturalists.” They even provide you with underwater digital cameras to capture your experience and create memories to last a lifetime. Another gorgeous luxury golf community on the Big Island, Mauna Lani Resort offers two very different, but equally stunning courses. The North Course rests on a lava bed south of a 230-acre, protected archaeological reserve and is full of rolling terrain adorned with lovely, towering mesquite (or “kiawe”) forests. The highlight of this championship course is its 17th hole, a challenging Par 3 tucked into a natural lava amphitheater. Meanwhile, the breathtaking South Course (home to the prestigious Hawaii State Open) is perhaps even more famous and features one of the most photographed golf holes in the world, the Par 3 15th hole. If you wish to play either course you have a few options. There are homes for sale in the area, while the first-rate Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows is a wonderful, luxurious place to stay for any duration of time.

THE RISE AND RISE OF AN EPIC POWDER TOWN

rom its perfectly groomed runs to its smashing culinary scene, Vail takes its hedonistic delights very seriously. Slopeside lunch spots are littered with robust, rosy-cheeked athletes feasting on hearty slow-cooked fare. It’s indubitably a posh scene, but one without the airs of Aspen. I spot hand-knit Himalayan hats being adjusted Moncler mitts; it’s a democracy of outerwear that you certainly wouldn’t see in Gstaad. With sporting spirit and thriving restaurants, Vail doesn’t need a cluster of misbehaving celebrities to confirm its appeal. ISSUE 4 . 2016

Takeoff // Adventure On my recent trip to Vail, the mountains glistened with idyllic snow while the village crackled with cozy comforts and a cool community. What is better than spending the day skiing with others at your level, and then reuniting with more or less-advanced friends for lunch? The best part of any ski holiday — besides the powder — is the social high. Evenings spent in convivial splendor, tucking into copious amounts of recovery proteins and decadent carbohydrates. A Colorado holiday doesn’t have to mean parting with a small fortune for a memorable experience — especially considering the copious benefits of EpicPass. The legendary pass has become the ski equivalent of an all-in-one access card to Coachella, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Bonaroo, and Burning Man. Imagine one pass that pays for itself in five days, giving you unlimited access to Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, and Keystone in Colorado; Park City in Utah; Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood in the Lake Tahoe area of California and Nevada; Perisher in Australia; Afton Alps in Minnesota; Mt. Brighton in Michigan; and Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin. Best of all? No blackout dates. EpicPass is just that, epic in scope and spellbinding opportunities.

Vail Resorts is the world’s leading mountain resort operator; the company holds nine world-class mountain resorts and three urban ski areas. If you are more keen on Breckenridge, you can’t get more central than Crystal Peak Lodge. Nestled at the base of Peak 7, this dashing lodge offers guests sweeping views of the majestic Rockies, and convenient ski-in access mere steps from the BreckConnect Gondola and Independence Superchair. Choose between one, two, three, and four-bedroom condominium suites with full kitchens and living rooms with fireplaces. How special is Crystal Peak? Olympic snowboarder Shaun White has been known to bunk down here from time to time. My intermediate snowboarding skills got considerably sharper after of two days of private coaching from Vail instructor Jen McCreery. Looking like a flamingo trying to bowl a strike in stilettos, I took on the challenging Whistle Pig run with vim and vigor. McCreery’s mindful manner is fresh in my mind as I make necessary stance adjustments to compensate for the demanding terrain. She honed my technique over two days, taking advantage of the flawless conditions.

When snow clouds did gather, we seized the window to tackle Simba before a complete whiteout took over. It’s only a blue diamond, but its sheer length — plus the fact that it is a rather narrow catwalk in some places — made it feel like a real coup. With more snow than you can shake a snowcat at and an average of 250 days of sunshine per year, Vail is one of the more reliable destinations for powder hounds. After all, the season is far too short to ski in slush. With seven of America’s 10 most popular resorts, Colorado is the alpha force of US skiing. Vail and Breckenridge each draw more than a million skiers each season with immaculately groomed runs. Vail offers the freshest, fluffiest bowls and most carvable chutes in the state, making it a beacon to those who prefer to make tracks rather than follow them. Of Vail’s various festivals, SKADI is the latest innovation to court ambitious, upwardly-mobile female athletes. Inspired by the titular Norse goddess of winter, Vail Mountain hosted their inaugural women’s ski festival last January. From film premieres to culinary presentations and wine tastings, SKADI presents the full Vail lifestyle experience, both on and off mountain. After a brisk day on the slopes, a massage at the Spa at Arrabelle is a welcome reprieve. A deep massage releases oxytocin and other happiness-inducing hormones. The Arrabelle Hotel as a whole offers a gateway to enlightenment and physical vibrancy. The first thing to note about uploading selfies shot at The Arrabelle is that everyone — even those who like you — will secretly hate you for it. Reason enough to go straight away. Donnie Yen in his most famous role as “Ip Man” (Mandarin Films)
By Ty Fahlman
A 66
fter Samuel L. Jackson met his co-star Donnie Yen on the set of the new xXx movie, he quickly took to Instagram. “Hanging with @donnieyenofficial, I can finally say I worked with Da Man!!!” Jackson wrote, beaming. “I’m officially Geeking Out!” “Geeking out” is what happens when fervent martial arts fans encounter the legendary actor, producer, director, and choreographer — whether they’re an average joe, or the highest-grossing actor of all time. When I told people I was interviewing Yen, they gave either one of two responses: “Who?” or something quite similar to Jackson’s unbridled superlative. There is no middle ground. Either you know who he is and adore him, or you’ve never heard of him. JETSETMAG.COM
But with two major American films on the horizon — the aforementioned Vin Diesel sequel, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, early next year, and what could quite possibly be the biggest movie of this year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, on December 16th — it seems like the category of people who don’t know Yen’s name could soon been rapidly diminishing. In China, it’s already a much different story. Arguably the country’s biggest action star, Yen made over $28 million there in 2013 and is a borderline cultural icon. The consensus is that now is his time to follow in the footsteps of his forbearers like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li and crossover and become a superstar in the States. I first meet him in the lobby of his Beverly Hills hotel. He is over an hour late. It isn’t his fault — his photo shoot ran late — but he apologizes profusely nevertheless. From the moment I shake his hand, he is humble, articulate, and introspective; I find him

company he founded in 1997 and manages Yen’s breathless schedule. To use a tired cliché, she seems like the perfect left-brain yin to Yen’s right-brain yang, and she is capable of not only wrangling his restless artistic spirit, but also promoting his brand (she’s the one who showed me Sam Jackson’s Instagram post and mentions Robert Downey Jr.’s reaching out to express his impassioned admiration for her husband). She is personable, savvy, and doesn’t mind enthusiastically touting her very humble husband’s accomplishments. “Look at this,” she says, proudly showing me a Youtube video of his virtuoso piano playing: “Here he is playing Chopin. I mean, people don’t even know he is a musician!” I soon get the sense that Yen and Wang have very strong and symbiotic personal and professional relationships, and perhaps she was the driving force behind his ostensible upcoming American crossover attempt. But when I broach the latter subject, he just bushes it off. “The truth is I’ve worked on American films [Yen had small roles in Early Aughts action movies like Blade II and Shanghai Knights], but 10 years ago, they really didn’t understand how to direct martial arts, nor did they get how I work, Yen says. “When you hire me, you’re not just getting an actor; you are getting a

immediately captivating. He’s 5′ 8″, but like most true movie stars, feels larger, and with his stunner shades and form-fitting designer graphic tee, he looks every bit the part. We quickly make our way to a quiet booth in the back of the hotel restaurant and Yen requests a drink menu. “You want champagne?” he asks me in a polite but assertive way. “Sure.” How can I say no to Donnie Yen? It turns out not too many people do. Yen — whose mother was a Tai Chi grandmaster — is credited for both popularizing the martial arts style known as Wing Chun and bringing MMA to the Chinese mainstream. There are many (almost mythical) tales from when he was a young, self-described “rebel,” the most famous of which involves Yen allegedly sending eight gang members to the hospital (“that was blown out of proportion,” he says nonchalantly). But when Mike Tyson was cast alongside Yen in the third film in his beloved Ip Man series (about the man who trained Bruce Lee), people were publicly concerned that the former heavyweight champ might injure the comparatively diminutive Yen. Yet it was Tyson who landed in the hospital with a broken finger. “I felt bad about that,” Yen says earnestly, “it was just an accident.” Soon we are joined by Yen’s beautiful wife, Cissy Wang, a former model whom he married in 2003. Wang now heads the production JETSETMAG.COM

choreographer, a director.” He likens it to watching Michael Jackson rehearse in the documentary This Is It: “He was singing, and at the same time he would stop and say, ‘no, the beat comes in here,’ or ‘you need to be faster,’ or ‘you are one step off.’ Because if you want Michael Jackson, you’re not just getting a performer, you’re getting the whole package.” The truth is, Yen was initially reluctant to do Star Wars (something 99% of actors not named Harrison Ford couldn’t fathom). “Honestly,
I didn’t want to spend five months apart from my family, filming in London,” he tells me. But then, he mentioned the prospect to his three children. “I asked them ‘how do you feel about daddy doing Star Wars?’ and they flipped out,” he says, laughing. The film’s young director, Gareth Edwards definitely knew he was getting the whole package when he brought on Yen, and allowed him to flesh out his Forcesensitive character as he saw fit (“it was my idea to make him blind,” Yen says proudly). Today, Yen is pleased with his contribution to the film and even embraces the fact that he will forever be immortalized as a Lego (“I think I might give them out as gifts,” he jokes). And if the film leads to more offers from American studios, then great. But Yen really just wants to be inspired. “I just take it one movie at a time,” he says. “I just look for the types of films that I am passionate about and challenge me and are refreshing…I think mainly about the character.” As we are finishing lunch, he takes out his phone and shows me pictures of a makeup test from an upcoming passion project he has been developing about the life of notorious gangster Limpy Ho, whom Yen describes as “Hong Kong’s Pablo Escobar.” In heavy prosthetics and glasses, Yen looks utterly unrecognizable, and he wells up with enthusiasm when discussing the film. “This is what I want to do,” he tells me, “I just want to be inspired.”

hen Jesse Dittmar learned he had only 10 minutes to photograph Tom Hanks for the photos in our last issue, he knew he had to use his time wisely. Any time wasted fiddling with lights or struggling to articulate his vision could mean that he wouldn’t get the shots he needed and Hanks would be off to his next endeavor. So he got there early. He sat and absorbed his location, pondering each and every artistic possibility. He slowly set up, making sure everything was just right. And when the legendary actor finally arrived, you would have expected the photog to start snapping frantically. Instead, he talked. ISSUE 4 . 2016

Billy Joel - Photo by Jesse Dittmar
72
“I spent the first few minutes just talking to him,” Dittmar tells me, “that was like 25% of my photo shoot...but what I was doing was making him comfortable, settling him into the shoot.” His rationale is that it is always best to first connect on a human level, to treat your subject less like an object or a tool in your art, and instead foster a relationship. Dittmar likes to show his subjects past images he has shot, chat with them about different concepts, and slowly build their trust. In the case of Hanks, after a few minutes he felt they had developed enough of a rapport to begin shooting. Luckily for all parties involved, he was right. In just a few minutes, he was able to compile a stunning series of images that adroitly encapsulated the iconic actor’s humor, dignity, and range. But that’s what Jesse Dittmar does. He captures his subjects’ souls. One of the preeminent celebrity portrait photographers in the world, he has an uncanny ability to distill a performer’s essence into a single image. From young ingenues (Shailene Woodley) to aging rock stars (Sting), from British satirists (John Oliver) to American screen gods (Hanks), Dittmar finds the truth in every subject under his lens. His uncanny penchant for capturing celebrities is on full display in his new book, Two. But it isn’t just celebrities; from his work with The New York Times to the dozens of civilians who’ve enlisted his talents for personal portraits, many have been fortunate enough to have their image captured by the sinewy Brooklynite. JETSETMAG.COM
Yet there was a time not too long ago when Dittmar’s phone was not ringing off the hook with people begging him to shoot their portrait. Just four years ago, the photographer found himself at a major crossroads. For years he had worked his way up in the industry as an assistant, eventually reaching the highest plateau imaginable, assisting legendary photographers like Annie Leibovitz (“my hero,” Dittmar says, definitively) and Ben Baker (whom Dittmar assisted on shoots at the White House with the President and First Lady). He could have continued, making a comfortable living working alongside his idols. But he wanted more. Dittmar’s dream had always been one of being a photographer, not an assistant: Batman, not Robin. “I had what you might describe as an unconventional childhood,” he tells me. His father was an agent for Oasis and some of the other defining rock groups of the Nineties, and Dittmar grew up backstage at epic concerts his dad would drag him to. It was there his father imparted upon him a very fortuitous piece of wisdom. “He taught me to treat them like they are normal people,” Dittmar says. “Look them in the eye, shake their hands, and talk to them honestly.” And thus, young Jesse would spend hours chatting with rock gods, and while it demystified and humanized them, it was also simultaneously preparing him for later in his career. He tells me he has “no doubt” that those many interactions made it easier down the
road when he was adjusting lights in the Oval Office or asking more than one multiple Oscar winner to pose for him (Hanks, Jodie Foster). And they also may have inspired him throughout his career to distill seemingly out of touch entertainment icons into their most honest and human representations — like the stunning portraits found in his book — as if in an attempt to say, “Celebrities are regular people too; just look.” But whatever his creative rationale, in 2012 Dittmar came to the conclusion that he would play second fiddle no more. He walked away from his lucrative assistant career to establish himself on his own. “It was never the goal,” he says about assisting, “and so I sat down with my wife — girlfriend at the time — and told her what I had to do. And she was supportive.” What ensued was a period of over a year where Dittmar struggled to both make his name and keep the lights on. “It was tough, living in New York, barely getting by on bartending jobs I couldn’t keep because I was always running off to shoot whatever I could, building my portfolio.” But then, after 14 agonizing months, the phone finally rang. On the other end was the former photo editor of The Washington Post who had seen Dittmar’s ever-evolving portfolio and offered
an opportunity to shoot broadway icon Idina Menzel for a story. Dittmar seized this one chance to finally showcase his talents with an actual celebrity shoot. The result was a stunning series of images, and before he knew it, he was shooting musician Sharron Jones for a series that got published in a number of magazines, not the least of which was Rolling Stone. “And then I went from maybe three shoots in 14 months to 85 in the next 12,” he says. “Finally I was there.” Three years later, Dittmar’s reputation is that of one of the most skilled in his industry, and glancing through the striking portraits in Two, it is easy to see why. Each image grasps the viewer with its naked truth and heart-rending depth. But for him it’s not just about capturing people, it’s about capturing the times. “When it’s all said and done,” I hope I took pictures that helped define people in a certain era,” he says. “My job is as an image taker, so if I get remembered for capturing images that define people, and the time period, and have an impact on the public at large, then I will feel like I have certainly accomplished something.” It might be too soon to judge, but glancing at his portraits, I say mission accomplished. Millionaire Mentor By ty fahlman
L
ast year, Chinese investment in the United States hit a record high $15 billion. And with that number expected to balloon to at least twice as much for 2016, this recent influx shows no apparent signs of slowing down. Increasingly, more and more deeppocketed Chinese investors are looking to North America as they invest their hard-earned cash, and right at the forefront of this movement is Dan “The Man” Lok. Already a legendary rainmaker amongst the Chinese affluent elite for years, the entrepreneur, business mentor, and internet marketing authority has now become a global celebrity beyond his native Canada for both his memorable motivational tactics and undisputed business prowess.
74
By any measure, Dan’s output has been prolific. He has authored 12 books, owns 10 companies, and is involved in at least a dozen other businesses. With nearly 1,500 members, he operates one of the largest entrepreneurial community in Canada: the Vancouver Entrepreneurs Group. Simply typing his name in Google yields almost a million hits. And each year he attends countless speaking engagements where people literally line up to see Dan tell his inspirational tale of how he went from “minimum wage to multi-millionaire” seemingly overnight. People leave these seminars empowered to either go out and start a successful business or turn their lives or businesses around. Countless success stories can be clearly traced back to Dan Lok’s expertise, guidance, and mentorship. JETSETMAG.COM

“My life was never easy but today I can say I’m blessed enough to have attained a lot of my goals and now I strive to assist in helping others that are dealing with their own life struggles realize their dreams.” - Dan Lok Mr. Lok, opening speaker at TEDx Stanley Park
76
After talking to Dan, it’s easy to see why so many people over the years have turned to him for advice. He is funny, articulate, engaging, and caries a strong, overriding sense of calm. But after hearing his full story, I understand just how unbelievable it is that the once-shy Dan Lok has become renowned as a motivational speaker. “My family and I immigrated to Vancouver when I was 14,” he tells me. “I came to Canada as a teenager with no money, no contacts, and no knowledge of English.” Dan was tasked with daunting dual challenges of learning English and fitting in as both an immigrant and a teenager (neither a small feat in its own right). Soon he was getting bullied every day. But Dan was determined not to take the harassment lying down. He learned English fast, and (in order to defend himself) learned martial arts even faster. He gave every ounce of effort he could summon to making himself the most successful person he could possibly be. When he wasn’t studying or training, he was devoting himself to making money. He started his first business — a lawnmowing empire — in high school, and quickly learned that he had the prowess to succeed in business. He knew how he was going to get back at the kids who picked on him. And after working tirelessly (and being fortunate enough to have some brilliant mentors, like the “50 Billion Dollar Man,” Dan Peña), Dan found himself a millionaire in his twenties. He was living the lavish lifestyle of his dreams — “new cars, constant traveling, $3,000 on dinner and I don’t even drink...” he tells me — but something was missing. He describes the person he had become as a “selfish prick,” and says, “I looked around and saw I had all these friends, but they weren’t my real friends; I was doing all these extravagant things, but they weren’t making me happy.” So he walked away from the lifestyle he had worked so hard to attain. “In my search for purpose, I turned to religion, I turned to charity, I turned to find real achievement,” he tells me. “I learned that I needed to stop focusing on helping myself and actually focus on helping others.” And thus, the birth of Dan Lok the Mentor began. “As JETSETMAG.COM
soon as I shifted to helping others with their lives and businesses, and stopped being so selfish, I instantly started feeling better,” he says, “it was like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.” Ironically, it also lead to more financial success. When Chinese investors started coming to North America in droves, Dan saw an opportunity to help a very skeptical demographic that he had a unique window into. As someone who fluently spoke Mandarin, Cantonese, and English — and because of his heritage gave him specialized knowledge of Hong Kong, Chinese, and Taiwanese cultures — Dan was best suited to guide this burgeoning investment demographic. Dan knew exactly how the Chinese affluent made major purchase decisions, their likes and dislikes, and the dos and don’ts of doing business with them. “If you try and sell Chinese people like Caucasians, you will fail, because you aren’t accounting for their culture,” Dan says. “You have to understand how they think; everything is different...in China, they are getting scammed every day.” Because of this, Dan says, there is an inherent distrust among the Chinese when it comes to investments. As he tells it, “It takes a while to build their trust, but once you have it, they will only do business with you.” Today Dan is the most highly-regarded and sought-after authority on marketing and selling to high net worth individuals from China. And he continues to focus on helping empower others every chance he gets. “My life was never easy, but today I can say I’m blessed enough to have attained a lot of my goals and now I strive to assist in helping others that are dealing with their own life struggles realize their dreams,” he says. With the countless people he mentors seeing major success in business and two more books to be released by the end of the year, Dan shows no signs of slowing down. His stated mission is to empower one million entrepreneurs across the globe, and he won’t stop until his lofty goal is accomplished. here has been a lot of financial attention paid to the Baby Boomer generation (those born between 1946-1964), who are between the ages of 52 to 70 as of this writing. And rightfully so. Nearly 50,000 Baby Boomers are retiring every day and will continue to do so over the next 20 years. It is easy to measure the Baby Boomers’ economic impact by today’s standards as we watch the massive rush toward accommodating this demographic. Medical campuses, hospitals, doctor’s offices, and pharmaceutical companies all have the Baby Boomers firmly in their sights. We are already seeing investors raising pools of capital to invest in locally-based developers around the country that are focused on age-restricted, assistive care, and congregate care facilities. This is a thriving industry that will see massive consolidation over the next 20 years. Wall Street will definitely figure out a way to be much more involved at some point and soon everyone will be able to invest in the Baby Boomer boom.
But a more interesting investment demographic that has yet to emerge is that of Millennials, or Generation Y — those 87 million people born between 1977 and 1996. Millennials are now between the ages of 19 and 38, and soon all of them will be entering adulthood. In 2015, they comprised about 36% of the workforce, and by 2020 that percentage will be up to 50. So it would be wise to take note. When a demographic emerges that comprises half of the workforce that will be consuming, producing, and investing, it is vitally important to understand what they are all about, what they like, and what they might be doing. Millennials are a byproduct of the shifting lifestyles of the Baby Boomer generation. Like the Greatest Generation, they have been shaped by historical circumstances within their age cohort, and they have been impacted deeply by social and technological breakthroughs. They are connected 24/7 and approximately 85% of them own a smartphone. This demographic has been the most studied, coached, pampered, over-scheduled, and protected generation in our lifetime. Millennials are multitasking experts, never far from their precious technology, who viscerally care about personal branding.

80% of them sleep with the cell phone next to their beds. They cherish a balanced life and are not as motivated to get to the top as their Baby Boomer parents. They grew up with more but saw many of their parents’ wealth come crashing down during the Great Recession. As a result, they are questioning the 60-80 hour a work week and this slow economic recovery. They are upset with the lack of career options post-college, global uncertainty, and the unprecedented rise in the national debt (which they will have to pay). These are all things that will shape this generation. As I said, the Millennials cherish a balanced life. They eat, shop, and learn collaboratively using the frequent feedback that is now normal via constant online connection. They possess a transactional relationship with almost everything, including education, and they will be among the most entrepreneurial in recent history. This demographic was told by their parents that they can do anything they want to and be anything they want to be; yet they have been burdened with student loans, auto, and credit card debt as they moved into very rough economic times and an even tougher job and career market.

Altitude // Estates Under this demographic unrest, the crime rate and entitlements will decline. This is a social-based generation, with grand aspirations of saving the world. Breaking the perceived cycles of despair and poverty may just be accomplished. Furthermore, Millennials want to be (and already feel) entrepreneurial mostly because they did not immediately fall into careers and they grew up on technology. They seek ways to express their creativity and rely on digital technologies to guide and govern their lives. With respect to Millennials and the real estate industry, the ensuing opportunities will pose both opportunities and challenges. The tsunami of real estate possibilities has already begun to show its impact and enormity. From the mercurial rise in the multifamily assets and revitalized retail sector to new workplace environments, the causation impacts have arrived. It is imperative that the top
get on its feet, pay off some debt, and build for the future, you can be sure that they will be renting for a very long time. From apartments to condos to single family residences, most Millennials rent first. Ironically, this is the best option for them, as it gives them both freedom and mobility. Urban and suburban mixed use will appeal to this generation the most, and they will sacrifice size for location, and pay more if the amenities and services allow them to recapture lost time while working or in transit. The long-term outlook is rosy for the residential rental market and the Millennials (and the succeeding generation) will sustain the multifamily industry for years to come. The sector that will be in the most flux will definitely be retail. As I have discussed before, we are now in a cashless society, and Millennials prefer to interact with brands via digital channels. This is

brass of the various real estate organizations completely understand this generation and be flexible in the change that will be required to accommodate the soon-to-be most dominant generation in the United States. As of today, at least 50% of Millennials rent, and 25-to-35% live with their parents (there are various conflicting studies on this, but regardless, it is a huge number). The primary reason is that this generation has been burdened largely with both student loan and credit card debt. The average student loan debt is about $45,000, and of the combined $1.2 trillion in student loan debt, only 37% is paid on time. Thusly, Millennials are falling behind financially. So it’s not surprising that they are delaying starting families or postponing major expenditures, like home-ownership. Until this generation can JETSETMAG.COM
rather obvious today, but much like the demise of the newspaper, the travel agent, and the record store, many local retailers will go the way of the dinosaur unless they “adjust,” like Apple. Millennials feel very comfortable shopping online; they love to browse and prefer to do it from a cell phone, tablet, or computer. The online presence of retailers will have a continued negative and undermining effect on mall and store traffic. Grocery stores and pharmacies will do well, discounters will be successful, restaurants/food service will flourish, and themed centers will still attract shoppers. However, thousands of retail centers around the country will not survive. Over the next decade, Millennials will redefine shopping, more than any other generation in our history. Millennials are not and will not personally invested in traditional office space. The challenge for the owners and operators

of office buildings will be tied directly to their tenants. Millennials do not want traditional cubes or dedicated rooms; they want creative, open space where they can collaborate and socialize, as well as build relationships and careers. As a result, a new industry for office space is beginning to gain momentum: places like WeWork, Nextspace, Liquid Space, Hera Hub, co-Merge, Urban Hive, and others are forms of communal capitalism and are all growing rapidly. The office of the future will be a place to grow, not a place to simply work and store paper and files. Digital hubs and co-working spaces will become commonplace. Remember, in just 10-15 years, Millennials will be in charge of leasing decisions. For landlords of core office buildings, many of these properties will be too costly to replace, and the combination of a lack of new office construction and more workers in less space will mean higher rent in the near future. More simply put, Millennials will transform the office sector in the next decade. So if you are a real estate professional, there are a couple things that you need to embrace within the next five years. The first is that we will have a serious talent shortage in real estate. Millennials who would typically fill this gap are just not ready (due to lack of experience and the interruption of their career paths). While Boomers are preparing for retirement, Millennials are still slowly preparing for adulthood. Millennials are not yet entirely independent and have relied on others (namely parents and technology) to solve their day-to-day problems and challenges.

“Millennials do not want traditional cubes or dedicated rooms; they want creative, open space where they can collaborate and socialize.” Again, technology is key. It will be the big equalizer here, yet Millennials will also suffer due to their hyper-connectivity and digitally-dependent lives. They are very smart, yet easily distracted and will need to allocate and balance their attention and emotions effectively. And don’t forget, by 2020, “Generation Z,” now barely 18 years old, will account for 40% of all consumers. As the great Peter Drucker said, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” My suggestion to you is to just follow the numbers (Boomers, Millennials, Generation Z) and plan accordingly.

“Just remember to strive for balance and keep in mind that every once in a while, some procrastination isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”
THE KEYS TO FINDING A BALANCE IN YOUR TIME MANAGEMENT
W
e all procrastinate at one time or another in our work and personal lives. Whether it’s with a presentation or report we need to prepare for work, or cleaning out the garage or having a serious talk with your children or spouse at home, procrastination can creep in before we know it. It is easy to fall into the trap of “I’ll deal with it tomorrow.” But is that really such a bad thing? Not necessarily, it turns out according to behavioral and organizational psychologists. In fact, it’s been found that procrastination can lead to greater creativity.
BY BARRY LABOV
Just consider a few of the world’s most famous procrastinators. Leonardo Da Vinci took 16 years to paint the Mona Lisa. He was such a procrastinator, his benefactor had to threaten him with bankruptcy to get him to finish a commissioned work. Visionary French author Victor Hugo was another legendary procrastinator. Resorting to extremes to break his most severe bouts of procrastination, he had his servant take away all of his clothes, leaving him naked in his study until he began writing again. (How’s that for a motivational tool?) ISSUE 4 . 2016

Altitude // Industry
By its definition, procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing something. But during that inaction, ideas can incubate in the back of one’s mind. Even though physical action isn’t being taken to complete the task, subconsciously you may be thinking about the best way to tackle a project or coming up with different ideas that will make it great. This is why they always tell you to “sleep on” a major decision; while you rest, your subconscious is doing the heavy lifting. Procrastination also helps weed out what’s really important. After procrastinating on something for a while, you may realize it’s not that important or it’s not the right thing you should be working on. It gives you time to evaluate your priorities and determine what’s really essential. The benefit of procrastination was tested in a study conducted by professor of management and psychology at Wharton, Adam Grant, and his former student, assistant professor of management and human resources at the University of Wisconsin, Jihae Shin. They asked participants to develop new business ideas. One group was told to start right away, while the other group was told to spend five minutes playing computer games before creating their ideas. The results showed the people who were told to play games developed ideas that were 28 percent more creative, as determined by independent judges.
88
JETSETMAG.COM
What that shows is that waiting, or even “procrastinating,” can lead to greater creativity. However, the study also evaluated ideas from a group of people who were told to wait until the last minute to begin their idea generation. The results showed this group’s ideas weren’t as creative. The conclusion is that while a certain amount of controlled procrastination can be beneficial, don’t push it to the point where there is little time left to devote the requisite attention and effort needed to do a good job. Now the opposite of procrastination is “precrastination,” a term that refers to the tendency to complete or at least begin a task as soon as possible. While it may feel better to get work started right away and even finish ahead of time — getting it off your mental to-do list — this can decrease the overall quality of performance. Rushing into a project removes valuable time that could be spent mulling over ideas. Whether you call this “sleeping on it” or “letting something percolate,” there is value in putting off the actual work of a project to allow time for cognitive processing. Then there’s the risk of a project’s direction changing. If you’re a precrastinator and have most if not all of a project done, you run the risk of investing time only to have the customer change his or her mind. Precrastination can also mean you spend more time on trivial things instead of devoting solid time to generating ideas and creative work. For example, a precrastinator is more likely to answer emails as
they arrive, instead of putting them off in order to focus on a project. It’s the tradeoff people make in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed. No one likes the thought of tacking an overflowing inbox. And with all the technology available to us — smartphones, computers, tablets, even our vehicles — the temptation to precrastinate is stronger than it’s ever been. While it feels good to check things off your list and get a sense of achievement when accomplishing tasks, precrastination can use up your energy and creativity on the wrong things. There’s also the fact that, try as you might, clearing off all the incidentals that come your way throughout the day is nearly impossible. There’s always something else that begs your attention. This can lead to increased stress and anxiety. It comes down to the fact that a moderate level of procrastination can be beneficial, but it really depends on the individual. Some find it difficult to focus on the big picture when there are so many smaller tasks waiting to be done. They have to clear the little things away first. Others are expert procrastinators and put it to work for them when developing the most creative ideas. And then you have those who are a mix of the two. Wherever you fall, just remember to strive for balance and keep in mind that every once in a while, some procrastination isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A GLOBAL BREXIT BY ROBERT KIYOSAKI
ISSUE 4 . 2016

O
ver the past quarter century, in surveys by both the Library of Congress and Christian Science Monitor, readers of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged commented that the book “transformed” their lives. Many believe the novel is second only to The Bible as a work that most influenced readers lives. The book was published in 1957, and by 1984, five million copies had been sold. At the very least, Rand set off an “international shock wave” still felt today.

“There is no algorithm to predict when revolution happens, but if current trends continue, the consequences for society in terms of social unrest and economic upheaval could be terrifying.” - Thomas Piketty, French Economist
If you are among the few who haven’t read it, Atlas Shrugged describes how a genius named John Galt grows weary of supporting a society of ungrateful parasites — aka the political, academic, and financial elites who rip off the producers of the world and turn democracies into kleptocracies. So one day, Galt simply walks away and goes into hiding. And thus he becomes an inspiration to likeminded men and women who eventually follow his example.
from the Middle East and Africa and mass murders by terrorists into the equation, and Brexit was inevitable. And it’s likely that it will grow into a contagious political disease. Will France and Spain be next? Who knows. Even China has had to put down rebellions in Hong Kong. I believe that the Brexit was just the beginning. I believe that the populists who supported candidates like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump will get more vocal and more active...like the Brits.
Today, many people are becoming modern-day John Galts… they’re going into hiding. On June 23, 2016, the British voted to leave the European Union in a historic event known as “Brexit.” In a close referendum vote, 52% of voters rejected the arrogant rule of the EU superstate run by unelected bureaucrats, courts, and commissioners. Much more than just an issue between the British people and the European Union, Brexit was a global issue — a referendum on the growing gap between the rich and everyone else. Eight years from the biggest market meltdown since the Great Depression, the key lessons of the 2008 banking crisis still remain unlearned and our financial system is just as vulnerable as ever. Furthermore, people are angry. Rather than completely fix the problem, the government and central banks bailed out the elite that caused and profited from the crash. Add mass migrations of refugees
And where is John Galt hiding in all of this? The truth is, modernday John Galts are hiding all over the world. French actor Gerard Depardieu moved to Russia to escape the parasites running France. (Things are pretty bad if a Frenchman has to hide from French moochers in Russia.) Speaking of Russia, Russian John Galts are buying expensive condos in Manhattan...next door to Chelsea Clinton. Asian John Galts are buying second residences in Hawaii, California, Australia, and Canada. Miami is very popular with John Galts from South America and Puerto Rico. And African John Galts left their country a long time ago. American John Galts? They now have dual passports, dual residences, and overseas bank accounts. My wife and I considered acquiring another passport, but decided against it. (If things get worse, we may change our minds.) For now, we just purchased three John Galt hideaways in America.

Our primary residence is an older, affluent Phoenix neighborhood. The problem with that one is that it’s not gated. (We do have a private “rent-a-cop” service, but they are as competent as Sgt. Schultz from Hogan’s Heroes.) Our second John Galt hideaway is in Hawaii. If airports are closed and we are stuck there, we have a sailboat with fishing gear for food, water purifier for water, sails and a diesel engine for power. — not too shabby. But our primary John Galt getaway is on Brays Island in South Carolina. Why? For starters, it is a remote and secluded island with its own armed security force and two Marine Corps bases 30 minutes away. Secondly, while its inhabitants are as affluent as any Beverly Hills or Manhattan residents, they don’t flaunt their wealth with gaudy extravagancies (and many of them are armed). Also, the island has no debt nor is it subject to economic crashes or market volatility. And if push came to shove, the island could easily become self-sustaining with enough vegetable gardens, fresh water, fish, and game for residents and staff. But most important to Kim and I is the fact that Brays is only 45 minutes from the home of Gulfstream Jets if public airports are jammed, we can get to Brays by private jet from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Arizona. You think we’re being paranoid? I read Atlas Shrugged as a teenager. Less than 10 years later, I was a Marine Corps pilot at the tail end of Vietnam’s own decades-long Brexit, rotating home just before the fall of Saigon. At a squadron reunion years later, three fellow pilots who were there told those of us who missed the

evacuation about the last days of a collapsing South Vietnam. One said, “I saw human beings turning into animals, stepping on friends and family for a seat on the helicopter.” French economist Thomas Piketty told Time’s Rana Foroohar that “There is no algorithm to predict when revolution happens, but if current trends continue, the consequences for society in terms of social unrest and economic upheaval could be terrifying.” PIMCO co-founder Mohamed El-Erian said we have less than three years left before the economy hits a T-junction. (If you don’t know what a T-junction is, it’s basically “the end of the road.”) In Atlas Shrugged, Rand had John Galt come out of hiding when political parasites are gone and producers are once again respected. But when will that be? The people have voted, but the Brexit is just the beginning. Now of course, the financial, academic, and political elite will not give up without a fight. The central bankers and their compatriots at the EU, IMF, White House, Treasury, G-8, Wall Street, and the rest of the financial bubble machine will fight for survival. They will defend their greed and their disregard for the laws of sound markets, sound money, and capitalism, and it may be years before producers are once again respected — and John Galt can come out of hiding. Until then, plan accordingly… Robert Kiyosaki is an entrepreneur, educator, investor, author of the international bestseller Rich Dad Poor Dad and a global advocate for financial education.

Are Video Games Really That Bad? If you don’t fill your day or life with challenges that inspire you, it will fill up with challenges that don’t. Challenges that inspire you can be the source of eustress, achievement, and wellness; whereas challenges that don’t can be the source of distress, aging, and illness. Leaders with great wisdom pursue challenging, inspiring, meaningful, and contributive endeavors.

ideo games are often seen as mindless dalliances, rotting our kids brains. But when your 12 year-old boy, whose highest values revolve around conquering the most popular multiplayer video game, does so, he immediately innately yearns to expand his dexterity and creative skills once again and tackle the next challenging game. He does not require any extrinsic motivation, reminders, or incentives from you to arise each morning and work intently and enthusiastically on this primary aim; he simply naturally yearns to become the video game master he envisions. He may have to be reminded to do his uninspiring school homework, or chores, and thereby feel momentarily impeded, but he remains inspired from within to do what he loves most. He has a built-in desire to master what he focuses on most with enthusiasm and tackle the seemingly ever-greater challenges that accompany his inspiring pursuit along the way. And as that boy matures and as his highest values evolve, his most inspiring pursuits naturally evolve along with them. If he has become used to pursuing his video game dreams and tackling those virtual challenges, he will have a greater probability of growing in confidence in conquering other areas of life to become master of his fate. He is more likely to become master of his destiny more than victim of his history. His growth naturally becomes accelerated with every new game, problem, or challenge that he conquers. He repeatedly excels in what his is inspired by most. The executive center in his developing forebrain becomes more and more awake with increased blood, glucose, and oxygen as he discovers his next inspired vision and strategically plans, executes, and masterfully selfgoverns his highly-prioritized actions. Of course, you as his parent — and a member of a previous generation — may tend to project your more conventional set of values and well-meaning intentions onto your son in an attempt to moderate (or in some cases impede) your child’s natural desire for tackling ever greater challenges or problems. But you are not realizing that those new games that seem meaningless to you are but temporary sources of meaning and empowerment along the way for your son and act as a catalyst for future leadership development in his later, more socially contributive endeavors. As new values evolve and emerge within your child — as he eventually becomes an independent young man — his new (yet similar) natural yearnings can fulfill the same outcomes of developing his inner governance and self-mastery with new and more expanded objectives. If he discovers what is truly most important to him and learns the vital skill of seeing how whatever comes along his way can be perceived as on the way more than in the way, he will embrace the many challenges that emerge as catalysts for accelerated and hormonally-driven growth, development, and achievement. When he learns to ask himself: “How specifically is whatever I am experiencing at present helping me fulfill my highest values and chief aim?” he will then awaken his executive center and empower his natural innate and emerging leader from within. disordered and scattered death physics. When your developing young man brings order into his life by strategically pursuing what truly inspires him, he is less vulnerable to the outer forces of disordering entropy that result from the scattering influences of others. When his voice and vision on the inside become greater and more profound than all opinions on his outside, he naturally begins to master his life. As with your son, whether or not you are still a young man at heart, if you do not fill your day with high priority actions that inspire you, it will automatically fill up with low priority actions that won’t. And, as I have said before, if you do not fill your day with meaningful challenges that inspire you and that serve others, it will fill up with challenges that create distress and desperation to warn you. These less-fulfilling feelings are nothing more than essential feedback mechanisms to assure that you eventually return to pursuing what is truly inspiring and meaningful in your life. Nature has a way of honing you in over time to be authentic with who you truly are. You and your son are leaders deep within waiting to emerge. You are not here to live in the shadows of anyone. You are here to live upon the shoulders of giants through tackling ever greater challenges that inspire you. With every new challenge that you conquer, you will be provided the next opportunity to make an ever greater difference within society and in your life. May your son’s video games remind you of your own inner vision games.

Tending to Your Most Important Investment… Are You Worth It?
M LINDA HENLEY-SMITH
ost people are concerned with where their money goes, and that’s understandable. Sometimes it seems as if my money often goes places without me because it isn’t always there when I go to look for it. People ride the stock market roller coaster which offers both exhilaration and panic. They do this because they feel it’s worth the investment of time and money. But often, they don’t invest in their most valuable and potentially profitable asset…themselves. Obviously, if you don’t want to end up living in a large cardboard box, you need to invest wisely and be prudent about your finances. However, it’s just as important to invest in your own well being. We need money to take care of our basic needs and those of our families and we also want to be able to fully experience life and do the things that give us joy. But no matter how much financial wealth we accrue, it won’t do us any good if we aren’t around to reap the benefits. Also, we can’t take care of anyone else if we don’t take care of ourselves! Investing in yourself is not only beneficial to you, but it also makes things better for the people around you. When you take the time to be the healthiest and most balanced person you can be, everyone benefits. You may as well be a good friend to yourself because wherever you go…there you are!

Don’t mess with stress because no matter who you are, eventually you will lose. What good is all your money if you are six feet under?
How do you go about investing in yourself? Here is a starter list:
Nurture yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally. A truly successful person doesn’t adopt the motto; “I am strong. I am invincible. I am pooped!” You can work yourself to the point of exhaustion and tell yourself and others that you’re doing it for all the right reasons, but when you are nothing but a puddle on the floor, you won’t be very convincing. It’s better to set boundaries for yourself. Get proper rest and exercise. Step away from your phone and take time to quiet your mind and empty your brain of earthly woes. That’s not being lazy or irresponsible; it’s being wise. Those who care about you will be glad that you are still able to function rather than becoming a zombie. No matter how wealthy or well dressed they are, zombies aren’t good company and they are definitely no fun at parties. Besides, after you’ve worked yourself to death, people won’t praise you for your martyrdom. They will just say you should have taken better care of yourself. Don’t stress for success. When you learn to take yourself lightly while taking your work seriously, you will be better able to choose your battles, come up with creative solutions and turn negatives into positives. Laughter may not make everything better for you, but it will certainly make you better for everything. If you don’t think you have anything about which to laugh, just look around because the world is a virtual laugh laboratory. Consider the sign in an airport by the lost luggage department which reads: Please make sure your plane has landed before you report your baggage lost. Even if you’ve lost your bags, that’s funny. The only investment that is guaranteed to always provide you with positive returns is the one you make in yourself. If you don’t do it, who will?

n our first issue of the year, we wrote that the 2015 Miss Jetset competition was something of a “phenomenon.” That may have been true, but it left us in somewhat of a bind when describing this year’s competition. How do we adequately characterize the scope of 2016’s contest? Well for starters, the nearly 12,000 women who entered had a combined social media reach of over a billion people. And through the massive global competition, Jetset was able to raise and donate nearly a quarter million dollars to the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation which provides financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer nationwide. To state it plainly, Jetset could not be more proud of this unbelievable competition which empowered women across the globe of all shapes, sizes, and colors, while at the same time raising money for a tremendous cause.

We also couldn’t be more proud of the new Miss Jetset, Laura Lydall. Already a celebrity in her native Australia — where she has frequently appeared on television and on the cover of magazines such as Maxim — Lydall is truly a star on the rise. And as a seasoned traveler who has already traversed the globe several times and knows the affluent lifestyle well (she does drive a Ferrari, after all), we couldn’t think of a more perfect ambassador for our brand for the next year. As is now customary, we flew Lydall out on a private jet to our hometown of Scottsdale, AZ for her inaugural photo shoot for the magazine. (Her few days here were eventful to say the least, as we also flew her down to Inde Motorsports to be amongst the first to partake in an incredible new track experience Jetset is doing with Ion Jets.) After chatting with Lydall during her stay, it’s easy to see that she is worldly, driven, and extremely passionate about her career
Warriors. Bettina Bathe is a retired commercial airline pilot and an accomplished children’s author. And professional model Ashley Alexiss has nearly a million Instagram followers and her own very successful swimwear line. Each of these women are unique and extremely accomplished, and so we felt it was necessary to also fly all of them (minus Lee, who couldn’t make it, and plus last year’s winner, the incomparable Becca Tepper) out to our headquarters for a massive celebration to honor Lydall, B+, and all the women who competed. The party (coverage on page 157) was a rousing success, as hundreds of VIPs, business luminaries, and close friends of Jetset came out to meet the girls and watch as we presented each of them with a check, before handing our largest one, for $237,000, to Bob and Julia Helland who represented B+. Upon accepting the check, Bob gave a tearful speech about losing his daughter Taylor to colon cancer last year

and taking the next step. She is already the brand ambassador for 3G Safety Watch as well as the face of Ultra Tune, Australia’s leading provider of after-sales automotive service and tuning. The Ultra Tune gig is a perfect one for an avid car enthusiast like Laura, but being Miss Jetset provides a unique opportunity in that she now represents an American brand. “I am so honored to be Miss Jetset because Jetset is such an established and respected brand and this will allow me to get my message out to so many incredibly successful people across the world,” she tells me. In winning her title, Lydall beat out a truly exceptional group of women. On page 108 you can see all of our unbelievable finalists, but something must be said about our diverse Final Five. First you have our runner-up Jaime Lee, a very intelligent, competitive fitness bikini athlete who pledged to “contribute in any way” to the B+ Foundation beyond the contest. And then there’s professional golfer and philanthropist Sydney Cox, who throughout her career has raised money for groups like the March of Dimes and Wounded
and reminded everyone in attendance about the true importance of this competition. A few days later, Laura (living up to her new title) is about to board another jet for Vegas for some much needed R&R with some old friends. “Some people collect stamps, I collect friends,” she tells me of her travels. She even collected a few throughout the competition. “So many girls would get eliminated and then message me telling me that they believed in me and I had their support,” she says. “It was truly humbling.” Growing up in Brisbane, Lydall dreamed of one day leaving her mark on the world. “I believe in working hard, being persistent, and never giving up on your goals,” she adds. “And being a part of this contest, standing onstage with Bob and Julia and knowing that what we did will make an impact in the lives of families like theirs, I now feel like I have accomplished a major goal.” She says goodbye and boards the plane, but before taking off, pops her head out again: “But there still is so much to do.” Safe travels, Laura. We know you’ll represent us well. ISSUE 4 . 2016

A Wingman for Human Kind By Lou Raiola
P
rior to his inevitable rise as a solo artist, songwriter and chart-topping Nashville hit-maker Lee Brice achieved strong acclaim when his songs were picked up by the likes of Jason Aldean and Garth Brooks and turned into chart topping singles. Even at the early age of 10, the CMA and ACM award-winning artist was already writing and signing his own tunes. As is the case with virtually any great artist, every note, chord, and lyric of Brice’s music has carried deep personal meaning and intent. Amongst countless rave reviews, the New York Times hailed Brice as “a sensitive macho man,” the perfect description for the man beyond the music.
110
JETSETMAG.COM
On the fateful evening of June 25, 2015 in Minnesota, that sensitive macho man performed a private benefit concert at a residence on the shores of Lake Minnetonka. The concert was for Folds of Honor, a non-profit which provides scholarships and assistance to the spouses and children of those killed or disabled in service to America. As he completed his set with his mega hit “I Drive Your Truck,” next to the stage was Ginger Gilbert Ravella: the amazingly kind and courageous widow of Major Troy Gilbert, an F-16 pilot killed in 2006 while defending our country. Ginger Ravella is also the mother of five wonderful children, all under the age of 10 when they lost their father. With Brice standing stage side, she took to the mic to share the incredible impact that Folds of Honor had on hers and the families of countless others. And then an emotional Ravella revealed to Brice what his closing song truly meant to her and her family. “As fallen families, we cling to the pieces left behind by those we love,” she said. “Troy traded in his old beloved truck for a new one months before his last deployment to Iraq. Things were starting to break and we needed a reliable replacement.” To anyone else, it was just an old, broken-down truck. But to Ravella, it was so much more than that. It was Troy’s 1992 Chevy Silverado — a third-generation family heirloom passed down by his grandfather and father — and from the moment she heard Brice’s song, she knew he was singing directly to her.

concert for Folds of Honor. This time, on stage with Brice beside a completely-refurbished version of Troy’s 1992 truck was 16-year-old Greyson Gilbert, who now will become the fourth generation of his family to drive that storied automobile. The evening also marked the start of a new chapter for Brice. The former Clemson University lineman announced a new commitment to expand his partnership with Folds of Honor to form and lead a Nashville chapter. Brice will become the organization’s long-term music curator, working to further integrate the music industry with this amazing, young non-profit. He follows an impressive history of country stars, PGA professionals, NASCAR drivers, and other celebrities supporting the cause. Remarking on the creation of his music, Brice once said, “Sometimes you gotta go to a lot of the wrong places to get to the right places, and that’s not wasted time. It takes that trip to get where you’re going.” That may be true. But for Ginger Ravella and her family, Brice was in the right place at the right time, doing what he so passionately and genuinely loves — creating and performing music with deep personal meaning, intent, and purpose. Stay tuned, as this tour of service has only just begun…
Lee Brice and Major Ed Pulido of Folds of Honor
And in that instant, before the hushed crowd, Brice turned to his manager, Enzo DeVincenzo, and declared that they would find that truck. So alongside many amazing patriots — including the concert’s hosts, Perry and Anne Schmidt, and purple heart recipient and Folds of Honor senior vice president Major Ed Pulido — Brice and DeVincenzo scoured the country, and after an exhausting search, discovered the beloved truck in Arizona. And thus, a new mission was set in motion. Along with her five children and new husband, Ravella was invited to the 2016 American Country Music Awards to partake in a check presentation on behalf of Folds of Honor. But she had no idea what would happen next. “I thought I was going on stage to accept a donation from the ACM for Folds of Honor,” Ravella declared. “To my complete surprise, however, Lee pulled all of us up on stage, told the story of the previous summer in Minnesota and, then, turned to me to say, ‘We’ve found Troy’s old truck.’” As she stood there in complete disbelief, Brice handed her the keys. The the crowd erupted in patriotic chanting. And then on August 12, 2016, Brice returned to the Schmidt’s beautiful Minnesota home to perform a second annual benefit

THE GAYLORD TEXAN RESORT RINGS IN THE HOLIDAYS IN A VERY BIG WAY BY KAREN BROST
A
120
s the saying goes, everything is bigger in Texas, and that also applies to Christmas celebrations, especially at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, the official Christmas Capital of Texas, located northwest of Dallas. If you want your kids to enjoy a magical Christmas experience (or you just want to feel like a kid again yourself), it’s a holiday destination well worth considering. The resort overlooks Grapevine Lake and contains acres of lush gardens set in an atrium so large that it includes replicas of the Alamo, San Antonio’s River Walk and Palo Duro Canyon. At Christmastime, the resort transforms these gardens into a winter wonderland for its annual Lone Star Christmas event that truly has to be seen to be believed. Naturally, everything is done on a Texas-sized scale, like the décor that features two million holiday lights, thousands of festive ornaments and wreaths, Nutcrackers that tower 25 feet tall and a 54-foot Christmas tree. And what would a holiday celebration be without snow? The resort has that covered, too. Each morning, the JETSETMAG.COM
“elves” at the Gaylord Texan make enough real Texas snow to cover the resort’s giant, 12-lane Santa’s Wild Workshop snow tubing hill. The resort also brings in 40 master ice artisans from China to carve two million pounds of ice into magical holiday scenes and five ice slides inspired by the holiday classic, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town. The 14,000-square-foot attraction is kept at a chilly nine degrees, so the resort thoughtfully provides parkas for kids and adults. There’s also a 6,000 square-foot outdoor ice rink and even an “On the Rocks” ice bar that serves up adult beverages. You’ll never have to worry about the kids getting bored. Santa, toy soldiers and elves will be on hand, and the resort also hosts an Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt, milk and cookies with Mrs. Claus, gingerbread decorating and breakfast with Rudolph himself (complete with reindeer games). Kids can also create their own furry friend to take home at the Build-A-Bear Workshop. To learn more about Gaylord Texan’s Lone Star Christmas, which runs from November 10, 2016 to January 1, 2017, visit Christmasatgaylordtexan.com.

and can be outfitted with the options of the owner’s choice, such as a top-of-the-line Alpine Audio system, a custom center console and/ or wraparound LED light bars. The Rhino GX has received such an overwhelming response in the marketplace that US Specialty Vehicles is now taking pre-orders for its newest all-terrain vehicle, the Rhino XT, which is scheduled to go into production in November of 2016. To create the Rhino XT, the USSV designers and engineers started with a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited platform and drivetrain, then gave the vehicle an aggressive look with riveted flared fenders, removable solid and glass roofs, reinforced body panels and a redesigned roll cage. The vehicle’s sophisticated interior features premium leather seats, leather-trimmed door panels, a one-of-akind designer 3D-look digital instrument cluster, Alpine navigation system and a back-up camera. “I FINALLY FOUND A LEATHER BRIEFCASE THAT’S RUGGED, DURABLE AND GREAT LOOKING.” BY KAREN BROST
T

he briefcase a man carries says a lot about his character, work ethic, and the level of success he has achieved. When Ted Christensen — who is not only President of Texasbased Government Capital Securities Corporation, but also a commercial airline captain and former fighter pilot — searched for a new briefcase, he wanted one that was rugged and durable, yet also professional looking. He found exactly what he was looking for at Saddleback Leather Co. “I saw a Saddleback briefcase in a magazine article and then I discovered the company’s website,” he says. “I’ve been addicted to their products ever since.” Ted found that Saddleback’s Large Front Pocket Briefcase was ideal for his needs. “When I first received it, I thought it smelled great and I could see how sturdy it was. I also thought it was great looking,” he says. But the real test came when he started using it. “I couldn’t believe how much stuff I could get in it!” Ted adds. JETSETMAG.COM
The folks at Saddleback seem to have thought of everything when they designed this briefcase. It’s roomy enough to carry most 17 inch laptops, and it’s packed with plenty of storage compartments. On the outside, there are two spacious front pockets with a separate space for maps, two side water bottle pockets, a hidden front pen/cigar pocket and a wide newspaper pocket. Inside, there are two more pen pockets, a key strap, and a divider. Best of all, the briefcase is made of tough, fullgrain leather that just keeps getting better with age. In fact, the company is so committed to standing behind its products that it warranties them against defects in materials and workmanship for 100 years. Ted also has high praise for the company’s “awesome customer service.” He should know, since he also owns Saddleback notepad holders, cable bags, iPad sleeves, and even a dog collar. He uses his Saddleback briefcase every single day. “I expect to keep it until they bury me,” he says. For more information, visit Saddlebackleather.com.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN TOP QUALITY BINOCULARS BY KAREN BROST
A
126
pair of high-powered binoculars can bring your world into sharper focus, whether you’re viewing wildlife in its natural habitat, the celestial wonders of the night skies or the spectacular views from your deck, living room, office or favorite vacation spot. Since the quality of the binoculars you use can have a significant impact on how much you can enjoy these views, here are a few key features to look for. First, you’ll want to consider the number of eyepieces the binoculars come with and their ocular power. For example, binoculars that come with a single 25x lens will allow you to see items 25 times closer, but it’s better to have more than one option. Choosing binoculars that include multiple eyepieces will give you the flexibility to choose the magnification that’s best for each viewing situation. Comfort features like angled eyepieces are also important. When choosing a tripod for your binoculars, look for one that includes leveling bubbles and can be adjusted vertically so it can be adapted for people of different heights. Also make sure the tripod JETSETMAG.COM
is mounted on wheels so you can easily position it and move your binoculars indoors or outdoors as often as you wish. Once you (and your guests) experience the enjoyment of viewing the world through a pair of top-quality binoculars, you’ll very likely want to take them with you when you travel. That means that the weight of the binoculars and tripod should be a consideration as well as the availability of a sturdy case to pack them in. The SkyHawk Model 9600 100mm Ultra High-Powered Binocular set comes with features designed for maximum viewing enjoyment: two 45-degree angled eyepieces (25x and 40x) and an adjustable, anodized aluminum tripod with fluid panhead and swiveling stainless steel wheels. At just 17 pounds, the SkyHawk 9600 binoculars weigh nearly 10 pounds less than other models in their class, making them easy to transport. Custom cases for the binoculars, tripod and wheels are included in the complete set. For more information, visit SkyHawkOptics.com.

Buyer’s Guide // Design
A
s a Jetset reader, odds are you’ve spent a pretty penny on your automobile collection. Over the years you have amassed an admirable assortment of automobiles that embodies your tastes and desires, while building a garage that is a reflection of yourself. If this sounds like you, then you probably want to make sure that that garage is as well-appointed as possible. That definitely means procuring the proper flooring. Earning their reputation as “The World’s Finest Modular Flooring” (and the admiration of fervent car collectors like Jay Leno), Swisstrax is the leading name in modern alternatives to standard concrete or epoxy flooring.
128
Not just built for garages, Swisstrax makes exceptional quality tiles for your airplane hangar, gym, athletic court, office, mancave, or showroom. These modular tiles are easy to set up and maintain, can withstand up top 70,000 pounds, are silent, chemically resistant, nonslip, self-draining, recyclable, and UV-resistant. Backed by a full 15-year warranty and a 30-day money back guarantee, Swisstrax tiles easily interlock and cover cracks, stains, damaged epoxy, or concrete in your garage or elsewhere. The company began when its president and CEO Randy Nelson moved to Switzerland over a decade ago. While overseas, he carefully absorbed all he could about fine Swiss craftsmanship and engineering, and when he returned to the States in 2005, he applied all of his knowledge into founding Swisstrax. The idea was “Swiss craftsmanshipmeets-American engineering,” and almost overnight, the company took off. Over the past 11-plus years, Swisstrax has partnered with such esteemed brands as Barrett-Jackson, Ford, Dodge, Shelby, John Deere, GM, and Mercedes-Benz. Aside from their exceptional craftsmanship, part of what separates Swisstrax is their unique injection process. While most of their competitors use a one-point injection to fill their flooring, Swisstrax boasts a four-point injection process, leaving its engineers to craft a tile with a level of precision (and material-per-tile) that their competitors cannot claim. As soon as you unpack your Swisstrax tiles, you will immediately notice both their thickness and density; these are clearly very substantial (and stylish) tiles. Another thing that elevates Swisstrax beyond the competition is their devoted commitment to customer service. After visiting their website (Swisstrax.com) or giving them a quick call, you will quickly see why they are so highly respected in their industry. They make sure that the entire process of selecting tile and designing your ultimate garage, gym, or jet hangar, is as easy as possible. There are a vast assortment of colors, a brilliant “Floor Designer” application on their site helps you easily visualize your final product, and their support staff is friendly, helpful, and responsive. Swisstrax also offers a number of different styled tiles for any location. For a garage, hangar, or professional workshop, I would recommend their new Diamondtrax. These tiles are billed as being “bigger and bolder” than the traditional Swisstrax, and they boast a “diamond tread” solid surface design which gives them a very cool metallic, industrial look. But regardless of which Swisstrax you choose, you are guaranteed the best possible flooring to protect what you have worked so hard to achieve...and that is something that cannot be overlooked. ELEVATE YOUR NEXT BIG PARTY OR EVENT WITH HELP FROM THE COUNTRY’S MOST ESTEEMED TOBACCONIST

ou want your event to be special, right? Memorable, right? It’s a celebration, right? Well one of the world’s oldest professions is the preparation of tobacco for the purposes of celebrating, commemorating, and enjoying any special moment, and enlisting a skillful tobacco expert will help elevate your next big event to another level. Meet Maria. Maria was born, raised, and educated in the Dominican Republic — a country renowned for its production of sugar, tropical fruits, coffee, and of course, tobacco (arguably the best tobacco on earth). She was accepted at the University of Minnesota, where she earned her degree. A few years later, she went back to her homeland and worked with her abuelo to learn the fine craft of understanding tobacco and rolling cigars. “I loved my time with my grandfather,” she says, “and I hope to pass on what I learned from him.” She may hold a degree from the University of Minnesota, but she has an education in this centuries-old family tradition. For nearly two decades now, Maria has been working on perfecting her craft. Her clients include US senators and congresspeople, celebrities, and professional athletes. She is in high demand during the golf season in Minnesota — she was the most sought-after tobacconist for visiting dignitaries during the last Ryder Cup Tournament — and has become an icon in cigar circles for numerous companies JETSETMAG.COM
“I’m looking forward to meeting you and helping to make sure your event or celebration is something that will be remembered for the rest of your life.” - Maria

ALPINE MOBILE PHYSICIANS MAKES HOUSE CALLS AT COLORADO’S SKI RESORTS BY KAREN BROST

henever your travels take you to spectacular ski resorts set high in the Colorado Rockies — like Aspen, Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, and Keystone — there’s something you may want to pack right along with your skis, snowboards, hiking boots, and other gear: the phone number of Alpine Mobile Physicians. That’s because in the event that you or a member of your family or business group experience an illness or injury during your visit, a board-certified physician from Alpine Mobile Physicians will come to you — right to your vacation home or hotel — so you won’t have to travel to the emergency room. They’re on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide urgent/emergency care. And if any x-rays are required, they can expedite the process to eliminate waiting times. The company also serves as a mobile pharmacy, bringing any needed medications right to you. While the physicians at Alpine Mobile Physicians are experienced at treating a wide variety of injuries or illnesses, since ski resorts are located at such high elevations, they also specialize in the prevention JETSETMAG.COM

and treatment of altitude sickness. “One out of every four visitors that comes to our ski resorts is affected by altitude sickness,” explains Douglas Mayeda, MD, president and COO of Alpine Mobile Physicians, who is known by his patients as Dr. Doug. “Left untreated, altitude sickness can lead to serious, life-threatening conditions.” But you don’t have to travel to a lower altitude to find relief. As Dr. Doug says, “Alpine Mobile Physicians’ Research Center is the only facility in the area to offer a state-of-the-art altitude simulation chamber that can accurately simulate conditions at lower elevations and provide a safe medical environment for the patient’s recovery.” The center can replicate conditions from slightly above sea level all the way to 18,000 feet, which also makes it a popular choice for athletes who need to adapt to different environments in order to compete. It’s nice to know that house calls do still exist — at least when you’re visiting Colorado’s ski resorts.

New Ultra-Luxury Home Development Anticipates 22-25% Investor Returns

“A
golden opportunity to generate significant, reliable investment returns” is how PCH Exclusive Homes CEO Joe Medeiros describes his company’s plans to build an ultra-luxury modern home with magnificent panoramic ocean views in Newport Coast. The site’s views are unobstructed and protected in perpetuity, making them that much more desirable. Constructed with the highest levels of craftsmanship and adorned with the finest finishes, the home PCH is developing will have all the amenities that Ultra High Net Worth Individuals [UHNWIs] who are seeking residences in the area crave, “yet are currently unable to find,” Medeiros says.
investor returns annually with no stock market or bond market risk or fluctuation.” He goes on to say that “Investors also have the opportunity to work with an all-star development team that has more than 100 years of real-estate and construction management experience between them.” Between vetting team members through multiple interviews to determine their experience levels, methodologies, and internal controls and conducting extensive research to identify the most fruitful development opportunity in Southern California, Medeiros has invested thousands of hours into maximizing this project’s potential for success.
After eleven months of extensive research, PCH has specifically identified Newport Coast — the neighborhood with the third highest sales growth in the country last year for homes priced at $10 million or more — as one of the best areas in which to generate substantial profits. It’s densely populated with celebrities, heads of Fortune 500 companies, professional athletes, the ultra-affluent, and even royalty. And the fact that there is a scarcity of ultra modern homes in the $20+ million range presents an incredible opportunity for savvy real estate investors. “This is an ideal place to build,” says Medeiros, “and it’s an even more ideal place to generate profits.” To create attractive returns for investors, every part of the development process is based on extensive research about the market, price point, and profitability of the property using PCH’s proprietary, highly-selective methodology and practices. “This project is ideal for those who want a stable realestate investment as part of their portfolio and are seeking higher returns,” says Medeiros. “12 percent is a pretty good return in today’s market, but we’re anticipating approximately 22-25 percent
Medeiros boasts more than 20 years of elite management experience, most of which was spent working for premier financial institutions where he handled thousands of residential and commercial real-estate transactions collectively valued at over $3 billion. Expertise in real-estate capital finance and residential and commercial lending has made him the go-to professional for advice on project viability and deal structuring. He has trained hundreds of employees at prominent banks on various topics such as risk management, market analysis, comparable sales, appraisals, property types, construction management, regulatory compliance, and formal credit training. PCH Exclusive Homes is his latest venture. For the project, the company is looking to raise a minimum of $8.5 million and maximum of $18.5 million. “It shouldn’t be difficult once UHNWIs become aware of what we’re doing and the rate of return we anticipate generating,” Medeiros says. “The high-end in this particular market is not letting up anytime soon.” For more information and to request a copy of the prospectus, call 949-750-6700 or visit pchexclusivehomes.com. JETSET PRESENTS THE B+ FOUNDATION WITH A CHECK FOR $237,000
H
BY MATTHEW VON DAVEN
undreds of VIPs walked the red carpet on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the private jet hangar at Jetset’s Scottsdale, Arizona headquarters for an exclusive party celebrating the new Miss Jetset, Laura Lydall, the B+ Foundation, and all the wonderful women who competed in the 2016 Miss Jetset competition. The event was a lively and star-studded evening hosted by Jetset, Ion Jets, and revolutionary new crowd voting platform, CrowVote, featuring live music, gaming, delectable cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Volanti Jet Catering and Hangar Events. In attendance were a number of former athletes, business luminaries, and celebrities, including three of the five finalists from the Miss Jetset competition (Sydney Cox, Bettina Bathe, and Ashley Alexiss), as well as Miss Jetset 2015, Becca Tepper. The rousing evening was highlighted by two very memorable moments. The first occurred around 9:35 p.m., when the massive crowd quickly formed outside, and hundreds gathered to witness a jet land on the adjacent runway. Once it arrived at Jetset headquarters, the door opened,
and Lydall — looking absolutely stunning in a shimmering black sequined dress — stepped out to greet the screaming crowd and be properly coronated as Miss Jetset. The second major highlight of the night came as checks were presented onstage to each of the runners up from the competition, followed by a check to Lydall for $50,000. This culminated with Jetset CEO Darrin Austin presenting a check for $237,000 to the B+ Foundation. Bob and Julia Helland (who lost their daughter Taylor to cancer last year) were on hand to accept the check on behalf of B+, and Bob gave a stirring speech about Taylor’s life and how this money could potentially help prevent future families from enduring such terrible heartache. The event was capped off with an epic after-party up the street at newly-opened live music venue BLK Live where Jetset guests were able to enjoy private cabanas, more live music, and a late-night dip in the massive, lagoon-like pool. All in all, the event was a tremendous success and Jetset could not be more proud of the competition, its contestants, and our contribution to the B+ Foundation. ISSUE 4 . 2016

A High-Speed, Heart-Racing Adventure for the Record Books
W
By David Haraldsen Photography by Jeff Colquhoun
hen it comes to the very best in luxury destination resorts, Primland sits firmly atop the list. The breathtaking views and stunning design of this ecoconscious, five-star Virginia resort make it one of the premier vacation destinations. Perfectly nestled across 12,000 pristine acres of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Primland offers guests an unprecedented taste of five-star service and hospitality. And so it should come as no surprise that a high-speed performance driving experience hosted by this world-class hotel would be no different. Recently, I had the privilege of attending 2016’s Primland Driving Experience, and it was truly an adrenaline-fueled adventure, even for an ardent racing enthusiast like myself.
158
JETSETMAG.COM
Things got off to a pretty epic start, as the ride from the airport to Primland was spent alongside legendary Le Mans champion and PDE special guest, Tom Kristensen. Once he and I arrived and settled into our spacious suites, opening evening got underway with an extravagant gala and sumptuous, five-course dinner in the resort’s gourmet restaurant, Elements, hosted by Primland president and the event’s other professional driver, Harold Primat. The next morning, four beautiful Bell helicopters awaited to transport us to a hallowed racing locale, Virginia International Raceway. Arguably one of the best racing facilities in United States (if not the entire planet), VIR’s world-class road course is second to none and provided the perfect backdrop for the PDE. Upon arrival, guests were broken into groups of four and the heart-racing adventure ensued. First up, three high-speed laps in an Audi R8 at speeds in excess of 140 mph. Next we were timed as we took laps navigating a series of cones in an Audi TTS before coming to a complete stop within a set of markers. That was followed by an exhilarating, highspeed ride in one of today’s most popular spec cars, the Radical SR3. As if those three track experiences weren’t enough, next we headed out for a full-speed ride in an official Audi R8 LMS race car with “Le Man” himself, Kristensen, behind the wheel. My heart rate steadily increased as adrenaline coursed through my veins with each hair-raising turn as Kristensen rounded the course at speeds of nearly 200 mph. Shortly thereafter, I was given the chance to ride along with another champion driver, Primat, in the Radical
RXC Coupe, and he did not hold back as we charged down the straightaway and entered each apex at breakneck speeds. The day culminated in a final session in the Audi S3 on VIR’s Patriot Course — truthfully I think my co-pilot may have become a little nauseous with all the fast cornering I was doing (it probably didn’t help that we had spent a majority of our day at over 100 mph) — and then the infamous PDE Kart Race, where we raced right alongside Kristensen and Primat. Back at the resort we were treated to a beautiful outdoor dinner buffet — which (in very Southern fashion) included a full pig-roast, moonshine cocktails, and a talented bluegrass band — and the next day there was a splendid golf tournament at Primland’s critically-acclaimed Highland Course, which made for the perfect successor to a full day of racing with the pros. In the end, I had only been at Primland for three days and it was certainly all too brief. When taking into account the opportunity to reach speeds of over 180 mph alongside legendary racing professionals, the five-star accommodations, tremendous cuisine, breathtaking landscape, and seemingly endless list of activities and terrain to explore, the entire Primland Driving Experience can only be described by one word: Unforgettable. As a Jetset reader, we know your choices in experiences are vast. But take our word for it, this is one you do not want to miss. Space is extremely limited. eep in the heart of the Sonoran Desert lies what has remained until now a fairly clandestine and ultra-exclusive paradise created specifically with the diehard automotive enthusiast in mind: Inde Motorsports Ranch. This private, members-only race track offers an unparalleled experience for even the most discerning of professional drivers.
