Rise and Grind Ladies and Gentlemen!
a
s 2017 comes to a close, we look towards the future. New pathways and opportunities to greater prosperity sit on the horizon... we just have to be hungry enough to reach out and grab them. One of the first steps to even greater success is in your very hands right now. Because in this issue of Jetset you will find incredible business advice from our esteemed contributors like Ken McElroy, Barry LaBov, Dr. Demartini, and of course, yours truly. As for inspiration, we also have an assortment of incredible profiles of people in many different fields and lines of work. First up, Matt Damon. The talented actor has not one but two new movies coming out in Q4, and we learn about both of them and examine his stellar career. Then we sit down aboard a private jet with the newly crowned Miss Jetset, Adaliz Martinez, and discover who this impressive young woman is and how her life has changed (and will continue to change) with her new title. We also chat with jetsetting NASCAR champion Kurt Busch about where he likes to fire up his jet and journey to. We go in-depth with one of the great photographers of our time, Jeff Vespa (who’s also a pretty brilliant entrepreneur himself), and learn about his incredible career and the new movie he directed. And we talk to 2016 Miss Jetset runner-up Ashley Alexiss (who has about ten times as many Facebook followers as I do) and learn how she built her brand and travels the globe in style. On that note, with this being our big Travel Issue, in the pages ahead we take you around the world to many of the most desirable destinations to discover. We show you how to plan a five-star Disneyland vacation and to how to experience Vegas like a high roller. We explore the luxe ski resort of Telluride and help you discover the best luxury wellness resorts on the planet. We show you the ultimate luxury race car retreat and go inside the opulence of Paris’ most regal hotel. Oh, and because this is Jetset, we also have the latest from brands like Louis Vuitton, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and so much more to tantalize in our What’s New section and Luxury Holiday Buyers Guide. So here’s to closing out 2017 strong and ringing in the new year with a renewed purpose, focus, and of course, prosperity. Keep grinding,

AKG N60 NC Wireless Headphones Many audiophiles regard the AKG N60 NC as the best lightweight noisecanceling headphones on the market (they even won a GRAMMY award), and the N60 NC Wireless only improves upon them by cutting the cord. Q Sushi, Downtown LA Widely-heralded as the best sushi restaurant in LA (or perhaps even the best restaurant in LA, period) since its opening, Q Sushi has been attracting gourmands and fans of Japenese cuisine from across the globe. TRENDING ART CULTURE:
Beijing
Once only associated with stuffy ancient and traditional art, Beijing now sits at the forefront of the modern art world. Preeminent artists like Ai Weiwei are being featured on the cover of Time, and a growing network of underground galleries and artists have given birth to a massive underground subculture. The epicenter of this burgeoning movement is the 798 Art Zone, a halfmillion square meter complex of red brick at the rim of the Fourth Ring Road. Everywhere you turn in this thriving district is filled with avant-garde murals, sculptures, and vintage shops. Add this to the astounding number of modern galleries Beijing now possesses, and you have a true must-visit destination for art aficionados.
TRENDING PLACE:
The Highlight Room, Hollywood Consisting of places like Dream Hollywood, TAO Los Angeles, and Avenue LA, the new “TAO Block” on the corner of Cahuenga and Selma is completely revitalizing Hollywood dining and nightlife in 2017. 2018 Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster The Aventador is Lamborghini’s most beloved model, and for 2018 it has been given an elegant convertible facelift. This new topless S model features the Aventador’s iconic sleek lines and front fascia with new accents like arrow-shaped rear LEDs and large vents on either side to emphasize the car’s height. Under that rear hood of space-age material and lightweight glass, you’ll find a 6.5-liter V-12 delivering 730 horsepower at 8,400 rpm and 508 pound-feet of torque. It’s the same mighty engine found in the
coupe and can hit 62 mph in 2.9 seconds and tops out at 217 mph. Inside the Roadster is roughly the same lavish interior as the coupe. Buttery leather abounds, and the infotainment system and instrument cluster are both reliably state-of-the-art. As with any Lambo, the interior is customizable down to every last possible color option and detail. Perhaps the best feature though is the infinite headroom. Anyone 6ft and up will surely appreciate the ample head and neck freedom the Roadster provides. Add that to the new, customizable EGO driving mode, and you have what is perhaps the best driving Lamborghini yet
TRENDING COLLABORATION:
Supreme x Louis Vuitton What happens when you merge high fashion with street culture? The answer is Louis Vuitton and Supreme’s red-hot 2017 collaboration. Since debuting at Paris Fashion Week in January of this year, the predominantly crimson fashion line has sold out instantly and became one of the hottest fashion releases of the past century. Celebrities like Justin Bieber, Madonna, and David Beckham can’t get enough of the 65 piece collection. Want some? Pieces are fetching anywhere from two to 28 times their original price online — an $860 monogram box logo hoodie is currently selling for $22,750 — but there is truly no greater wearable status symbol on the planet right now.

THE 2018 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM By david haraldsen
f
or their latest masterpiece, world-renowned automaker Rolls-Royce has completely redesigned their flagship luxury sedan for 2018 with significant improvements to its already absurdly high levels of cloud-like comfort and sophistication. Recently unveiled at a special event in London, the eighth-generation Phantom is a substantial upgrade from previous versions, one that’s hand-built and delivered in the most subtle of refinements, beginning with a newly developed aluminum spaceframe elegantly dubbed “The Architecture of Luxury.” Other features and improvements include large C-pillars, an even taller grille, and an increase in acoustic insulation aimed at helping the model earn the title of “The Quietest Car in the World.” The new framework, aluminum suspension elements, and the latest cutting-edge technology — including electrically controlled

air springs and a road-scanning camera to anticipate bumps before they reach the wheels — add to what the brand is calling its “Magic Carpet Ride.” Basically this means even smoother ride capabilities than previously available, despite producing increased power (via a twin-turbocharged 6.75L V12 workhorse) to the model’s slightly smaller wheelbase. Rolls has even partnered with tire manufacturer Continental to develop its very own “Silent Seal” tires containing an extra layer of foam to reduce tire noise by an impressive nine decibels. The result is a vehicle so smooth you could write your next screenplay from the backseat while traveling down the rugged, pothole-laden streets of LA. Bottom line, if luxury is your automotive motivation, then the 2018 Phantom is clearly in a league of its own. Rolls-RoyceMotorCars.com

ocated in the heart of Ponte Verde, Florida, TPC Sawgrass is the key to luxuriating and playing like a PGA professional golfer. And with the opening of the Tour Performance Center, the course now allows its visitors to fully engage in the same experience as the seasoned pros whom they can watch compete in The Player's Championship every year... and routinely run into while playing its illustrious holes. For nearly 40 years, it has been an incredible course and resort, and now it is one of the best instructional schools in the nation. JETSETMAG.COM
If you've never been, everything about TPC Sawgrass is grand and elegant. Upon entering the clubhouse, my experience there begins in dramatic fashion, as I am greeted by a storyteller who graciously walks me through the intricate hallways, locker rooms, player dining/game rooms, and down the legendary player's tunnel. As I tour this hallowed venue, my guide goes in-depth to edify me as to the history of every magnificent piece of memorabilia and every story-filled painting that lines the walls. The moments become alive, the sensation of historical weight begins to stir deep inside me, fueling my desire to play the fabled course. With that motivation burning, I am ushered across the property to the gorgeous Tour Performance Center — a brand-new, 7,680-square foot state-of-the-art facility where one is given the full PGA training experience. It begins with a comprehensive physical assessment from Fitness Specialist Alex Bennett, a certified Athletics and Fitness Association of America Personal Trainer with a degree in Corrective Exercise Specialization from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and former professional golfer himself. Bennett assesses each athlete uniquely to create a dynamic warm-up plan with injury concentration and prevention in mind. Along with a robust training routine, Bennett's plans help to improve and strengthen any physical abilities that may be influencing or hindering a golfer's full swing mechanics. Once physically ready, the staff performs a complete assessment of the player's equipment. Because many players do not fully realize the importance of the technology they are using, the performance center provides a complete analysis from Josh Gumlia, who is among Golf Digest's list of “America's Best Clubfitters." Gumlia utilizes TrackMan, GCQuad-Foresight launch monitors, Quintic Ball Roll, SAM
PuttLab, and his own incomparable knowledge to provide the optimal club and ball data for each individual player. The performance center then offers up to 300 different shaft and club options, allowing each player to test and find their perfect set of clubs, including putters. As a professional golfer myself, I cannot express how much of a difference the right technology makes, as taking the surprisingly simple steps, allows you to remove an easily remediable potential hinderance in your game. Then, the real work begins. I meet with the course's Director of Instruction, Todd Anderson. Deemed one of the top golf instructors in the United States, Anderson has won 2010 National PGA Teacher of the Year, the 2009 Georgia Section Teacher of the Year, the South Florida Section PGA Teacher of the Year for 1999, and PGA Teacher of the Year award for Southeast Florida in 1995 and 1996. Brandt Snedeker, and Davis Love III and is a contributing teacher to Golf Digest and is featured prominently in GOLF magazine, with more than 50 of his instructional articles published. Needless to say, with Anderson at your side, you are in supremely good hands. Working with a complete analysis of your game via the center's leading-edge technology from names like BODITRAK, GCQuad Foresight Sports, K-Vest 3D, Swing Catalyst, TrackMan4’s Dual Radar Technology, and V1 Pro HD, he searches for each player's unique areas of improvement. Anderson is an uncanny master at pinpointing deficiencies in player's games, and he spends precious time with each student, patiently getting to know them and understanding the best way to help them better perform. I am also introduced to renowned guru Andrew Lanahan, who helps players succeed by building a stronger foundation of mechanics in their short game. Lanahan is one of the most skilled short game coaches I have ever met, and an invaluable asset to the club. The latter can also be said of Jordan Dempsey, who was mentored by Anderson for more than 12 years as both a player and an instructor, and whose current students you will see dominating myriad NCAA golf and WEB. com tour events. “Using the right technology allows you to remove an easily remediable potential hinderance in your game.” After the full spectrum analysis of fitness, technology, and swing, one can then utilize the practice facility to hone in on the changes made. Students can elect to work on the X-shaped fairway floor, allowing them to practice on many different terrains and lies, or practice on the many greens that surround the practice center. Then, when the time is right, you can take your game even further by putting all of your newfound knowledge to the test on one of the two spectacular TPC courses. Whether it’s the long bunkers lining the sides of the fairway or the infamous island green at 17, this is the perfect place to test one's game, and after a morning at the Tour Performance Center, you will have all the tools to take this invigorating challenge head on. After five years of expert trial and error, this October Croix will finally open the doors of a stunning new winery to a select few VIPs. Before the grand unveiling, Jetset had the distinct privilege of visiting and sampling some of their unique vintages. Long story short, it’s safe to say we were extremely impressed with what we experienced.

Croix limits their production to less than 1,000 combined cases of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Estate Zinfandel — in line with that of fellow acclaimed small-batch brands like Marcassin, Sea Smoke, Flowers, Costa Brown, and Williams-Selyem — and each bottle is a distinctive, alluring, and sumptuously aromatic experience. The Pinots are expansive-yet-focused: silky, robust, and flavorful with savory acidity and a smooth glide that finishes with substantial length on the palate. The Chardonnays are ridged with acid and layered with mouthwatering, elegant, and complex flavors of islandripe pineapple, sweet red apple, stone fruit, and crisp pear. The balance of fresh and savory draws you in for another taste, and each sip of each bottle is a joy.
Both varietals are produced from a unique blend of grapes from select vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. Croix is committed to ensuring a pesticide-free and sustainable environment for their harvests and describes their production style as “Narrow Gauge.” To them, this serves as an attempt to create wine that expresses the unique regional position in its entirety. Deriving from the French term meaning “Cross,” the Croix name itself speaks to Venge’s immense desire to “cross the regional divide” between Napa Valley and Sonoma County, and harmonize wine growing ideals both old and new. Croix Estate General Manager Jason Williams reminds me of a common saying in the wine industry: “There are no new ideas, just
different iterations on the same variety.” But to him, this is just “a lazy marketer’s concept” because it overlooks the grit and integrity found at the foundation of all great works of art. “Among the thousands of wines produced today, remarkable instances in tasting are truly rare,” he says. What separates 99 percent of wines with those that (by Williams standards) are truly “remarkable”? The way he tells it, it’s not the age or price tag or even the region. It’s simply the amount of effort and hard work placed into crafting the bottle. Croix’s wines were born from years of sweat and passion. “The initial concepts of Croix were a messy collage of random ideas and wines,” Williams says. “Shock art labels, unknown grape varieties, uncommon wine regions, stand-alone vintages…and on it went from idea to idea.” He describes their overarching goal as trying to bring
something new to a culture where so much is the same. The process was admittedly painstaking, but when you try these wines, you can practically taste their toil. Croix’s hard work has clearly paid off as these elegant bottles are destined to be treasured by both casual and seasoned wine aficionados alike. Meanwhile, the buzz surrounding the brand and the new winery has been swelling in the community for months (to use the classic wine parlance, it’s close to peaking). “By this time next year, we will have multiple-year waiting lists for some of our singlevineyard Pinot Noirs which are nearly 100 percent pre-allocated,” Williams tells me. “This comes before we even open the doors.” Cheers to that. Paris and the Four Seasons George V Hotel By Phyllis Lane & Kimberley Ashley Photography by Phyllis Lane
I
t’s a cool May evening. Just as the clock is about to strike midnight, I glance at the vivid, purple and gold journal lying at the edge of my desk. Beckoning for my attention is the page I had titled “Top Bucket List Moments” on a quiet New Year’s Eve. Scribbled across the page I see, “Go to Paris for the weekend and stay at the George V Hotel.” At the time, I made this note, I knew nothing about the Four Seasons George V Hotel. I had simply seen a picture of it online and felt as though it held the most romantic viewpoint of the Eiffel Tower I'd ever witnessed. As a professional photographer, images speak directly to me through my heart. It had been decades since I was last in Paris and that image was saying to me, “look no further.” I had found the most romantic spot in the City of Love and it was time to return.

I subsequently discovered that not only was the George located just steps away from the Champs-Elysées — the most fashionable street in Paris, lined with the best designer stores — it is also the hotel most preferred by the fashion industry during Couture Week. It is a place to see and be seen. As a fashion photographer keenly attuned to beauty, I can see why. Its elegant rooms possess private terraces with commanding views of the City of Light. The Georges’ romantic spirit of elegance, nestled in the arms of this magnificent city, was calling me. I have learned in life, you need not wait to say “yes” to what calls to you, so I said “oui” to Paris for the weekend, and from the moment my driver from the hotel greeted me with, “Bon Jour Phyllieeeees” (to my fresh glimpse of Gustave Eiffel's tower and the lovely trees lining the Tuileries), I knew in my heart I was “home.”

Pronounced zhorzhg sank, the hotel was built in 1928 in the 8th Arrondissement and contains eight stories, each with their own stories to tell. Like the street it sits upon, this property was named to honor the British sovereign who had helped France during the First World War, George V. King George the Fifth (as he was known in English) was the son of King Edward, and grandson of Queen Victoria. It seems fitting that this beacon of beauty is currently owned by an investment company controlled by the Prince of Saudi Arabia. Named after a sovereign, and now owned by a sovereign, this hotel treats every guest like royalty. Entering through the black framed revolving door, as my hand touched the brass bar, I felt like Dorothy arriving into the Technicolor of Oz. I walked into a dream come true. The lobby, drenched in light, soothed my heart with a warm greeting of rich, fresh colors and lush furnishings. Like a cathedral of sparkling crystal, a large chandelier cascaded overhead, while a breathless profusion of flowers unfurled their fragrance. This stunning symphony of symmetry was all accentuated by 18th Century tapestries. Before I could even set my luggage down, the gracious "femme" at the front desk had upgraded me to the Romantic Suite and I was whisked away into this landmark of 244 rooms and 59 suites. JETSETMAG.COM
Escorted to my suite, I was greeted by soft strains of classical music, which serenaded a large vase of lemon-yellow roses waiting for me on my nightstand, beautifully framed by golden-hued tapestries lining the walls. My private terrace was draped in a swath of pink roses, soaking up the sound of laughter which bellowed from the Golden Triangle below. I succumbed to its charm, and my love affair with Paris was in full swing. No time to settle into my room; I grabbed my Nikon d800, savored a chocolate-covered-strawberry, and finished my chilled glass of crisp champagne. It was time to take it all in. George V offers a heady list of distinct offerings and I was eager to imbibe. A small list of some of these signature experiences can make your head spin and your heart flutter — all signs of being in love. Spread before me like jewels in a crown were four signature experiences, each worthy of their own five stars award. I could descend the winding staircase underground to the legendary wine cave to explore the George V’s cool cache of treasures containing over 50,000 liquid gems. (Restaurant Director and Master Sommelier Eric Beaumard is directly responsible for creating that treasure trove.) Or I could choose, under the masterful skills of Gregory Hazac, to learn the art of “Le cocktail” and receive the honor of discovering

The 5.5mile trek would wind me thru the City of Light as it was becoming light, allowing me to encounter Paris’ monuments in relative seclusion. It would certainly be a nurturing way to gift myself with extra vitality and exquisite uncrowded views. I offer my compliments to the hotel as each of these exquisite offerings are complimentary to hotel guests. One amenity for which I never need to be asked is to be pampered in a luxury spa/salon. Located on the 4th Floor of the hotel, the Pop Up Spa by Leatham features an array of relaxing and rejuvenating treatments. It's worth noting that this exquisite space is both contemporary and temporary, as the spa itself is undergoing a beauty treatment — a renovation to be complete sometime in 2018. As someone who appreciates culinary perfection, dining at one of the three George V restaurants would provide me with reason enough to put a future visit on my to-do list. Also on my “must taste” list could be the second restaurant, Le George, which offers fresh, modern Mediterranean-style cuisine. At this Michelin star spot, I could sample the “Flavor Menu for Two.” And lastly, L’Orangerie is an extension of La Galerie and the third of George's restaurants to boast a Michelin star. Here, Chef David Bizet serves superb traditional French contemporary cuisine, as reflected in its superb ”Tasting Menu for Two.” Regardless of what I choose, the hotel offers so much to indulge, enrich, and enchant, that I cannot go wrong. A whirlwind of delights, the days in Paris seem to rapidly flow into the evening. My moments at the George and strolls through the city became fluid poetry in motion, as they were met with boughs of laughter and a deep-heart connection. It was the spirit of Paris that called to my heart and began to awaken me to a world of unborn feelings. So beautiful, it enchanted me. So empty, it has filled me. Paris became both the lover and the beloved I have been searching for. She was always in me waiting to become alive with passion and beauty. The Secret Lives of High Rollers By ty fahlman
L
ast year, a record 42.9 million people visited Las Vegas. To most of them, the fabled city offered an unparalleled escape from their daily lives, a chance to let loose and enjoy some of the finest accommodations, dining, and entertainment known to man. But to a select few, this special place is even more special. I am talking about the few hundredor-so ultra-VIP high rollers who frequent the city each year. To these select few elites who come for the highest-stakes gaming, the entire city is their oyster, with no lavish amenity or (legal) thrill off limits. When money is no object, Vegas becomes an even more extravagant paradise. This is how the highest of high rollers experience The Entertainment Capital of the World.
42
JETSETMAG.COM
Rob Gorodetsky is the definition of a true Las Vegas high roller. Renowned as the most successful sports bettor in the world, the man known in elite circles as “Big Rob” wagers nearly a half a million on games (mostly baseball) every single day, and various HNWIs and celebrities turn to him for his betting advice. His current residence? One of the over-the-top suites at Aria. Few people have experienced Vegas how Big Rob lives Vegas every day, so I figured he would be the perfect guide to learning more about the adrenaline-fueled high roller lifestyle.
Casino Hosts As Big Rob tells me, when you are a high roller, your Vegas experience is largely brokered by one person, your devoted casino host. This person’s sole responsibility is to ensure that visiting big shots have the best possible experience...and thus spend the most possible money at their casino. “Good hosts are invaluable,” Rob says. Real whales like him have hosts from all the major casinos competing for the right to manage their itineraries, and these hosts go to great lengths to ensure their stays are as epic as humanly possible. “Good hosts will do anything for their high rollers,” one premier casino host tells me. “Comped meals, shows, nightlife and spa experiences...you name it.” But as with a luxury concierge, it’s really all about the relationship. “I want a host that doesn’t make me feel like they are just milking me,” Rob says. “Major bettors value an honest rapport with their casino host.”
“Off-menu items, rare bottles of wine, special accommodations, you name it.”

Takeoff // VIP Transportation and Accommodations Unless you’re like Rob and live in Vegas year-round, the high roller experience begins when they touch down. If you are flying private into Las Vegas, then odds are you are landing at either Atlantic Aviation or Signature Flight Support. Both FBOs offer plush amenities and consistently reliable service. “They know me by name at the FBO,” Rob says, “and I love how my car is always waiting for me when I land.” Any serious high rollers flying into Vegas are sure to have their casino host dutifully waiting on the tarmac as well, but regardless of whether you are gaming or not, giving your tail number to the concierge at your hotel almost always guarantees a chauffeured car is waiting for you upon arrival. As a high roller in Vegas, the sky is quite literally the limit when it comes to where you wish to hang your hat. “High rollers are almost always sure to have one of the best suites in the casino comped for the duration of their stay,” the casino host tells me. No city in the world offers such a collection of lavish and inventive hotel suites this vast and impressive, and there are even some “secret suites” that are only available to high rollers. “We have one suite that we won’t even rent to Justin Bieber,” the host says, “strictly for high rollers.” As someone who literally lives in ridiculous hotel suites, Big Rob is certainly an authority on the subject. “I spent 30 consecutive nights at the Duplex Suite at the Wynn,” he says of Jetset’s favorite twostory suite with the elevator in it. “I am pretty sure that’s the record.” We’re also big fans of the collection of luxury suites at the Venetian and Palazzo. Palazzo’s Chairman Suite is a 6,367-square foot terraced wonder befitting of a Venetian prince containing its own private pool, spa, sauna, and steam room. (And yes, as with most ultra-premium suites, it has a butler.) Over at Caesars, the 9,500-square-foot Marcus Aurelius Villa is also a work of art, but our personal favorite is the 10,300-square-foot Nobu Villa. The hotel’s only rooftop villa, it typically fetches $35,000 a night and offers unparalleled Strip views, fire and water features, its own private Zen garden, and, of course, signature cuisine personally prepared by Nobu chefs on hand. Gaming, Dining, Shopping If you’ve ever stepped foot in one, then you know that high limit rooms are designed to be lavish and accommodating. Some of

the best include the Wynn Sky Casino, Bellagio Private Gaming Villa, and Talon Room at Cosmopolitan. The Aria High Limit Lounge where Big Rob can often be found is an elegant escape from the casino floor. And the casinos go absolutely out of their way to make sure that their high rollers are in complete comfort when visiting these opulent private rooms. That means catering food from any of the hotel’s elite restaurants, providing massage and spa amenities, and other at-table requests. Whenever they’re not gaming, casino hosts help ensure that their high rollers are having the best possible time. Vegas has some of the best restaurants in the world, and high rollers get

reservations and comps at all the best restaurants within the casino they’re playing at. Beyond that, restaurants tend to roll out the red carpet for visiting high rollers. “Off-menu items, rare bottles of wine, special accommodations, you name it,” Rob says. The indulgent MR CHOW at Caesars is one place notorious for going out of their way with splurging VIPs. That means setting them up in private dining room, whipping up vintage creations from the restaurant’s first location in London, and unearthing the rarest bottles of wine and spirits. From the in-hotel high-end selections like the Venetian’s Grand Canal Shoppes and Caesars’ Forum Shops to luxury malls on the

Strip like The Shops at Crystals, Las Vegas also boasts some of the best shopping in the world. But if you are a high roller, odds are you are not taking the time to do your own shopping while in town. Therefore your casino host will arrange a private shopper well versed in your sizes and proclivities to assemble a variety of luxury options while you relax or game. “They know I love the Louis Vuitton/Supreme stuff,” Big Rob says about the sold-out, red-hot collaboration featured on Page 24, “so they will go find pieces for me and text me pictures and prices.” For guys like Rob who don’t have the time to scour the strip for rare high-end threads, a personal shopper is a must. For entertainment off the Strip, the possibilities are numerous as well. Say a high roller wants a last-minute tee time at the wonderful Wolf Creek Golf Club in Mesquite? All they need to do is contact their host. Or if they need to teak a break from gaming in favor of a different sort of adrenaline rush, Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch allows you the thrilling opportunity to race exotic cars in an upscale, country club style setting, while the very-VIP “Heli and Horsepower Experience” from Sundance Helicopters involves getting picked up in a limo and taking a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon before racing exotics to Lake Mead and back.

As for nightlife, casinos want to make sure that their high rollers are having a great time at their premium clubs. I spoke with one of the premier VIP hosts in Vegas who was recently named one of Las Vegas’ “Power 35” top VIP hosts, he tells me that comfort and effort are essential when dealing with high rollers at these ultraluxe nightclubs. “We do everything we can to make sure that our VIPs have the best possible experience,” he says. “We want to ensure that their every desire is attended to.” For these elite hosts, these things range from placing them right in the DJ booth alongside redhot acts like Calvin Harris, and special treatments like arranging

In summation, after spending a weekend with Big Rob, I can faithfully conclude that high rollers in Vegas live a lifestyle that the average person — even the average affluent person — might have a hard time comprehending. The Magic of Telluride By McKenna Leiva

rigid winter temperatures evoke dread in many, but also bring one of the fondest times of the year for jetsetters...beloved ski season. For so many of us, it is a time of immense joy and a leisure-filled escape from our daily lives. But with so many options for quality skiing in North America, which destination separates itself from the pack? Which location rises above the level of merely “good to deliver an unparalleled synthesis of five-star skiing, amenities, and luxury? There are many great ones, but in our eyes one separates itself from even its most prestigious competitors, and if you can only visit one this winter, we think you should make Telluride it. So grab your skis, fire up the jet, and prepare to embark on your latest unforgettable winter ski adventure.

Telluride, Colorado Aspen. Vail. Whistler. Some North American destinations are world-renowned for their first-rate luxury and incomparable quality of skiing. Telluride is certainly one of them. In fact, to many affluent travelers, the year-round skiing town in Colorado is the premier ski destination in all of the world, eclipsing even those storied names. Located in the southern San Juan Mountains and part of the Rockies, Telluride is home to the highest concentration of 13,000 and 14,000foot peaks in North America. And in 2013, 2014, and 2015, it was voted the number one ski destination in the nation in Conde Nast Traveler's annual Reader’s Choice Survey. What exactly makes Telluride so alluring? It begins with the location itself. Only directly accessible via private jet and full of stunning natural beauty and colorful Victorian homes, Telluride contains over 2,000 acres of the best skiing known to man. Between the historic town of Telluride itself and the modern alpine community of Mountain Village, Telluride Ski Resort offers something for everyone. Although it's renowned for its advanced terrain, Telluride is evenly split between beginner and intermediate runs with wideopen slopes with spectacular views, and some of the most challenging in-bounds skiing on the planet.

Once the highest elevation commercial airport in the United States, few sensations compare to the thrill of landing at Telluride Regional Airport (TEX). As your jet descends amidst the forested mountains and cliffs, you will feel as though you are discovering the lost city of Atlantis. A former mining town, Telluride feels like a hidden wonder, a quaint escape packed with charm and beauty. Situated inside of an isolated box canyon — and enveloped by gorgeous scenery — one truly feels tucked away from the modern world when visiting this historic town. And with its population of just 2,325, Telluride is one of the most exclusive and intimate luxury communities out there. Due to its immense desirability, there aren't many homes available in Telluride, so naturally, it is not without its fair share of incredible resorts. Perhaps the most famous of all is The Hotel Telluride. This award-winning, pet-friendly resort is considered one of the top ski resorts in all of the nation and offers nothing but the finest in hospitality, convenience, and accommodations. Nestled right in the heart of historic Telluride, the location is prime for hitting the slopes of America's premier ski spot. Amenities like complimentary concierge service, gondola shuttle, and ski/snowboard valet and storage only add to its illustrious resume. ISSUE 4 . 2017

Takeoff // Escape The Hotel Telluride goes way beyond when it comes to caring for its VIPs. They offer complete white glove service, even having your skis waiting for you in the morning. As for accommodations, all of the rooms at the property are befitting of a Jetset reader, but our personal favorite is the 850-square foot Summit Suite. It offers a master bedroom with king size bed, two private balconies, a Jacuzzi, and ample living area for unwinding after a long day of intense skiing. And the Hotel's West End Bistro offers delicious American cuisine featuring fresh, local ingredients. As for other tremendous options in Telluride, the stately Lumière Hotel provides ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes and is located 1.3 miles from the center of Mountain Village. With its striking stone facade and a truly intimate feel, it is a captivating property. And if your excursion involves the entire family, the Exclusive Five Bedroom Penthouse is a lavish escape. The same can certainly be said about Fairmont Heritage Place, Franz Klammer Lodge. Located right near the gondola, it offers 24-hour concierge service, a sumptuous spa with an outdoor heated pool, hot tubs, and steam room, and all of the sophisticated service one expects to encounter at a Fairmont property. When you are not skiing its unbelievable terrain, there is still much to explore and discover while visiting Telluride. For further excitement, one can go on a unique guided snowmobiling tour of the Alta Lakes ghost town provided by Telluride Outfitters. There you

can learn about the history of this historic mountain town. If hiking is your forte, a visit to Bear Creek falls is a once-in-a-lifetime journey into Telluride's steep box canyon to bear witness to its majestic waterfalls. And then one can always take a stroll down Main Street, popping into the quirky shops that line its historic street. Of course, as soon as you work up an appetite, Telluride will not leave you unsatisfied. There are many excellent places to discover new cuisine in town, but a few truly leave a lasting impression. Allred's Restaurant is a dining experience one won't soon forget. Located in a panoramic space at the top of the gondola, it offers elegant atmosphere and sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The wine list is so good that Wine Spectator has named it one of the hundred best wine restaurants in America, and the menu features gourmet delights like juniper-bourbon marinated elk strip loin with sauce muscovite and Columbia River king salmon with baby bok choy. Located inside of an elegant refurbished home at the titular address, 221 South Oak offers a menu of French-American dishes prepared with care and craft. The ambiance is spectacular and all dishes — like Rocky Mountain trout with lemon brown butter ravioli — are made and developed entirely in-house. And since its name means “a person who enjoys a social and luxurious lifestyle,” we would probably want to include Bon Vivant regardless, but the stunning views and delectable French cuisine help it earn its mention in Jetset.

t Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona one has a plethora of wellness options available. You can simply rest and relax, enjoying any of the three luxurious pools and extensive and varied massage and skin care services. You can take leisurely strolls about the labyrinth, or enjoy a healthy dining experience at its multiple restaurants. On the other end of the spectrum, if you want a rigorous physical challenge, you’ll find Canyon Ranch’s fitness center jam-packed with an array of the latest cardio and strength training equipment that will accommodate any level of workout you could conceive, and combine exquisitely with daily hikes where you can enjoy stunning desert sights and sounds. However, for those of you who understand, appreciate, and prioritize the importance of self-care — of achieving a balance among your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, — you will experience the ultimate holistic, integrative care experience when visiting Canyon Ranch. The impeccable staff helped me formulate an intention for my stay and then guided me to make good on that intention via exceptional classes and services. I owe a special shout-out to Kasey, the nutritionist with whom I met during my visit. You see, chemotherapy had taken a toll on my digestion, and she deftly parried my numerous entreaties to simply recommend some supplements I could take to avoid having to change my eating habits. Kasey patiently and clearly explained to me the scientific reasons for her reluctance to acquiesce to my pleas for simplicity in the form of supplements. (Alas, supplements alone would not achieve the lasting results I was looking for.) This consultation was

The aforementioned fitness center has an array of classes that you can choose to participate in to achieve your physical peak, as well as massage and skin care services that are restorative, therapeutic, and oh so relaxing. And an integrative care facility is staffed with experienced physicians and other medical professionals who will craft a physical program for you based upon where you are today and where you wish to be. Even more impressive than the facilities themselves is the staff of Canyon Ranch, many of whom have been there in excess of 20 years. They embrace the philosophy and efficacy of integrative care and exude the utmost level of excitement and passion for their mission and for their guests’ care. It’s remarkably refreshing and speaks to the culture that Canyon Ranch’s founder, Mel Zuckerman,

ost people will agree that there is no greater family destination in America than Disneyland. The park Walt Disney created over 60 years ago attracts almost 20 million visitors each year from across the globe. Whether you are a child experiencing it for the first (or 15th) time, or an adult who just wants to feel like a kid again, there is an indescribable magic one feels when journeying to the Magic Kingdom. And for those in the affluent community, this magic place can be even more magical, with lavish resort accommodations, world-class dining, and special VIP tours available to enhance your stay.

The resort’s four presidential and vice-presidential Signature Suites are now even more majestic than ever. Each one honors both the Golden State and some of the preeminent 20th Century American architects. With crisp angles and lighter tones, the El Capitan and Arcadia suites pay homage to the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, while the Arroyo and Mount Whitney suites honor the design firm of Greene and Greene with their darker tones and natural elements that bring the outdoors into the space. Each is a unique architectural wonder with myriad fine details and five-star amenities. Of course, regardless of which room you choose, when staying at all Disneyland Resort hotels, you’ll enjoy convenient park access and the “Extra Magic Hour,” allowing you early entrance to select attractions. And when it’s time to unwind in luxury during your stay, nothing beats Disney’s Grand Californian Mandara Spa. Inspired by the island of Bali, it offers a variety of rejuvenating treatments and provides the finest in ambiance, privacy, and ultimate relaxation.

DINING Over the past decade, Disneyland has continued to exceed expectations in regards to fine dining. There are several fantastic upscale culinary options available at the resort. Headed by chef Andrew Sutton, the Grand Californian’s elegant Napa Rose features award-winning cuisine (like orange glazed duck breast with veal sweetbreads) and a tremendous selection of California wines. Over at the Disneyland Hotel, Steakhouse 55 offers up incredible cuts like their “SH55 Dry Rub Bone-In Rib-Eye” alongside tremendous service and grown-up ambiance. And for the kids, nothing compares to the unique experience of Storytellers Café. Also located at the Grand Californian, it allows you and your family the opportunity of dining alongside your favorite Disney characters. Where Outdoor Adventure Meets On-Track Adrenaline By darrin austin
A
s the CEO and Publisher of Jetset Magazine, I have been fortunate enough to take part in many of the world’s absolute most thrilling experiences and heart-racing adventures. I’ve had the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful destinations in the world and experience the very best in five-star resort accommodations and luxury amenities. As a result, I am left with somewhat higher expectations than the average jetsetter. But when our Automotive Editor returned from the renowned Primland Resort in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains with unbridled enthusiasm after their 2016 Primland Racing Experience, I knew it was one unique opportunity I could not miss, and I wasted no time registering for 2017. But even I wasn’t prepared for the level of luxury and excitement that lay ahead.

JETSETMAG.COM
As we boarded the jet to travel to the resort, my wife Tami and I were both in desperate need of a break from our hectic lives, and upon arriving at the resort’s 12,000-acre, breathtakingly lush mountainside property, Primland felt like the perfect place for a relaxing getaway. After checking-in, we were escorted to our very own private cottage, complete with all the amenities we’ve come to expect from a grand resort of Primland’s stature. Every detail was meticulously attended to, and we immediately felt an overwhelming and much-needed feeling of serenity set in after our day of travel. With help from the event’s official partner, Audi, the opening night dinner gala created the perfect introduction to not only the resort and staff but the other guests who had flown from across the globe to partake in this unique experience. The night’s guest of honor was Tom Kristensen, the nine-time Le Mans champion who also
happened to be celebrating his 50th Birthday. I took the opportunity to chat with this legendary professional driver who would be leading the racing experience alongside fellow championship racer Harold Primat the next day. We awoke early the following morning and headed down to Primland’s launchpad where four beautiful Bell helicopters were waiting to whisk us away to the historic Virginia International Raceway (VIR). Upon arrival, each guest had the pleasure of enjoying a full schedule of track events. These included everything from an autocross course and an obstacle course, high-speed laps around the world-renowned track in both an Audi R8 and Radical SR3 race car, and finally the chance to ride passenger with the pros for some notoriously heart-wrenching and adrenaline-pumping hot laps. As a former motocross racer and somewhat of an adrenaline junkie, I found these activities to be absolutely exhilarating and they truly satisfied my need for speed. The full day of events culminated in the annual kart race which has apparently become a crowd favorite and was probably one of the most entertaining and exciting events of the entire track experience. Racing alongside Kristensen and Primat certainly topped my list, and my only complaint was that I just couldn’t keep up and narrowly missed winning the prized award in the coveted kart race. As the day at the track finally came to a close, we boarded our helicopters to prepare for the flight back to the resort. Once we had a chance to freshen up, Tami and I were treated to an authentic Southern-style cookout complete with moonshine and a decadent full pig roast.

“The entire staff at Primland and VIR exhibits an incredible level of professionalism and Southern hospitality.” The next and final day of the experience was the much-talkedabout PRE golf tournament on Primland’s world-class Highland Course. While extremely challenging, the pristine, championshipquality course also offered perhaps one of the most unique golfing experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. With tons of elevation changes throughout the course and each hole requiring a new and pre-emptive strategy, the Highland Course is undoubtedly an avid golfer’s playground. After the final awards were presented, many of the event’s guests began to head back to their daily lives. Yet, thanks to the good folks at Primland, Tami and I were offered an additional night at the resort which we planned to take every opportunity to exploit. The vast variety of activities and services on site were just what we needed. Primland offers everything from ATVing, archery, paddle boarding, a stunning observation tower, and dozens of miles

of hiking trails, to name just a few. We took advantage of the extra time to experience Primland’s immaculate spa, as well as a chance to try the resort’s clay shooting class. It was Tami’s first attempt at shooting clays, and to my surprise, she was hitting targets within no time at all. Our trip was nearly over, and as if they hadn’t done enough to impress us already, we were once again given the Primland treatment with an exquisite chef’s table dinner in the company of our gracious host, Diana from the resort’s PR firm, Kemper Lesnik. (On that note, I must say that during my tenure at Jetset, I have worked hand-in-hand with a number of the premier global hospitality PR firms, but I have to give Diana and the folks at Kemper Lesnik a special thanks for continually going above and beyond to craft genuinely incredible experiences.) All in all, it was an entirely remarkable experience that I’ve already recommended to a number of my esteemed colleagues and friends. The entire staff at Primland and VIR exhibits an incredible level of professionalism and Southern hospitality that makes your stay even more incredible. And after my adventure, let’s just say that the Primland Racing Experience 2018 couldn’t get here fast enough. Forgive the pun, but I would recommend you race to reserve your position in next year’s version of this ultra-exclusive annual event.

e’s one of the most respected and accomplished photographers working today. For two decades, Jeff Vespa’s provocative and illuminating celebrity images have appeared in the pages of Vanity Fair, Vogue, and The New York Times. He’s published several books, was the Editor-at-Large for LIFE magazine’s LIFE.com, and the official photographer for both the Sundance and Toronto International Film Festival. Also, an innovator and self-made entrepreneur, Vespa helped found WireImage.com and is the founder and CEO of Verge, a digital magazine devoted to emerging talent. And in another milestone, he recently directed his first feature film, Paris Song, starring Abbie Cornish.

The film (which Vespa is currently editing) tells the true story of a small-town Kazakh singer (played by Sanjar Madi) who traveled to Paris for a signing competition at the 1925 Paris Expo. It was there he encountered legendary American songwriter George Gershwin and forged an unlikely friendship. It’s the kind of little-known story that makes for an intriguing historical picture, and Vespa’s keen eye and love for the time period and all its bold Art Deco architecture make him the perfect vessel to tell it. “There’s also a lot of social justice aspects and it’s about an artist who has had to make sacrifices for his art, so I felt there was a lot to connect with,” he says. Vespa’s passion for cinema actually predates his passion for photography. An artist since childhood, he began his career doing fine art photography and attended the School of Visual Arts in New York. While there, he worked as a PA at MTV during its golden era on pioneering shows like Remote Control and The Ben Stiller Show. Vespa can only imagine his future had he stayed (“a lot of incredible filmmakers came out of that place,” he says regretfully) but instead
he moved west, finishing his BA at the San Francisco Art Institute and then grad school at legendary AFI before finding himself working a desk job at Warner Brothers. “I hated it,” he confesses about his time at the studio, “it just wasn’t right for me at all.” He knew he wanted to make art, so he hopped on one of the few computers in his office that had the Internet (this was the mid-Nineties), and began searching Yahoo for photographer jobs. “I found this listing that said ‘Red Carpet Photographers Needed,’ and I thought it was a joke,” Vespa tells me, laughing, “I thought, ‘it can’t be this easy.’” But it was, and soon he had his first gig shooting the premiere of Warren Beatty’s 1998 satirical film Bulworth. Despite not having a requisite zoom lens, Vespa’s employer was impressed by his images, and he quickly had steady red carpet work. Vespa likens shooting red carpets to shooting sports. “You have a very tiny window to get your shots,” he says, “you really have to know what you’re doing.” Eventually, he capitalized on a lack of competition to hustle jobs as a “house photographer” for events.

Altitude // Artist Profile In no time, Vespa had built a flourishing business. “I created my career from scratch,” he says, “I didn’t really have anyone helping me do it.” In 2001, he banded with four fellow photographers to create WireImage, which became the top celebrity photo agency almost immediately. An incredible achievement, while most of his co-founders had been in the industry for decades, Vespa had only been shooting celebrity events for less than two years. (Six years later, WireImage’s parent company MediaVast sold to Getty for $207 million in an all-cash deal that netted Vespa millions.) Vespa’s hustle also brought him to the major film festivals where he would go set up shop and offer to shoot portraits of attending celebrities. Soon he was the official photographer for Sundance and the Toronto International film festivals, shooting the biggest stars in the world and seeing work in the most prestigious magazines. But perhaps his greatest artistic achievement is the 2014 Rizzoli book The Art of Discovery. It features 100 different images of prominent celebrities, each accompanied by a personal story of discovery. Vespa contacted every celebrity (most of them friends of his) and personally interviewed them for the book, learning a great deal from them in the process. The result is an exquisitely beautiful, refreshingly honest coffee table compendium. Aside from his unshakable drive, undeniable talent, and fierce business acumen, perhaps the most impressive thing about the man is his level-headed humility. Given his accomplishments, one would have every right to assume Vespa to be self-important and pretentious with his subject selection. But his subsequent book? A paean to America’s favorite fast food item entitled The World is Your Burger. Why? “I just love burgers,” he tells me unapologetically. When I ask for recommendations for a good burger in LA, he doesn’t

name some $45 truffle wagyu confection. “Shake Shack is now in LA,” he says enthusiastically. “And I mean, you can’t not love In-NOut, but Oinkster is probably the best burger in LA.” The future is objectively bright for Vespa. He has the very cool Verge magazine and (naturally) a hot dog follow-up book on the way. And if Paris Song leads to a full-time career directing films, then I get the sense he will embrace it wholeheartedly. Because as for celebrity photography, there isn’t much left to accomplish. Leo. Kidman. DeNiro. It’s hard to name an iconic actor that Vespa hasn’t shot. When I ask him who’s left on his dream list, he ponders for a while. “I really wanted to shoot Elizabeth Taylor before she passed away,” he says, “that would have been a dream…I also would love to do Clint Eastwood...or Obama.” “What about Obama eating a burger?” I ask. “It’s already been done,” he says, sounding somewhat dejected. Well I guess you can’t accomplish everything.

Racing’s Biggest Jetsetter By David Haraldsen
B
y his own account, NASCAR icon Kurt Busch is “collecting rings left and right.” In February, the Monster Energy brand ambassador and proud member of Stewart Haas’ legendary racing team finally won the fabled Daytona 500 for the first time... mere weeks after tying the knot with his “soulmate” Ashley in a picturesque St. Barts ceremony capped off by a performance from his buddy Steven Tyler. A few months later (as he awaits his next race at Bristol), we had the chance to catch up with Busch and delve deeper into what gets the globetrotting racer’s gears turning.

or Busch, travel has always been an inspiration. Looking back, he recalls fond childhood memories of family trips through the Rockies and visits to Phoenix and Southern California to watch big races with his father (a racer himself in Busch’s hometown of Las Vegas). And while the NASCAR circuit continually takes him around the nation 40 weeks out of the year, it was a sojourn to Nürburgring in Germany to visit its famed Grand Prix racetrack that really reignited the stock car champion’s passion for travel. “I was just in awe of the fun and intrigue of going to Europe,” he says. “It spurred all kinds of trips for me to go to Paris, London...all the way to Eastern Europe, to the Czech Republic, and on to Budapest to watch Formula One racing.” Today, Busch’s passport certainly has no shortage of stamps, and everywhere he goes, he immerses himself in the local culture. “I dressed like a college student when I went to Morocco just so I could walk through [the streets] and not have any attention,” he tells us. His favorite cultural destinations? Austria and the Swiss Alps. But back in this hemisphere, Cabo is a constant getaway, and he just returned from a “boy’s trip” to Montreal. When it came time to find a wedding locale, he and Ashley rightfully headed to the Caribbean to scout locations, and now the couple is preparing to charter a yacht to embark on a lavish “pre-honeymoon” across the Bahamas. Busch is also the longtime owner of a Learjet 31A. He tells us the light jet is the perfect size for getting in and out of the smaller airports often near the various racetracks he needs to travel to.
For all 12 years he’s owned the plane, he’s proudly entrusted his livelihood to the same lead pilot, James. The two have a tremendous rapport, but Busch admits he’s wisely “saved tens of thousands over the years” by outsourcing the rest of his flight crew. Speaking of toys, I am sure you’re wondering what kind of epic car collection is hiding behind the garage doors of the “Batcave” just five miles from Busch’s North Carolina home. We learn that his esteemed assemblage consists of a handful of classics, such as a ’65 Shelby Cobra, a ’69 Camaro, a pair of 1932 Fords, and his very first car, a ’64 VW Bug. But he says his favorite and literal “trophy car” would undoubtedly be the 2005 Ford GT presented to him by none other than Edsel Ford II. He’s racked up a grand total of just 97 miles on the GT, a milestone he plans to keep in honor of his former No. 97 racecar. As for the future, Busch tells us he wants to win Darlington, and his hometown of Vegas, and “perfect each of the tracks.” What about those whispers of retirement? “I would definitely tell you that the demographics are changing,” he says. “It’s a young man’s game right now...so we’ll see what the future holds.” One thing he can tell us is that he has a map of the world, with all the places he has visited marked - including a bold annotation that reads “future dream trip” for a one or two-month adventure in a luxury motorhome across the Australian outback. That trip will have to wait until after retirement, but regardless of where the world takes him, Busch’s future has never looked so bright.

odel. Entrepreneur. Influencer. Inspiration. 2016 Miss Jetset runnerup Ashley Alexiss is many things. A self-described “Jill of All Trades,” for years she has been using her tireless tenacity and stringent work ethic to propel her burgeoning brand. Alexiss has 5.3 million followers on Facebook alone — for perspective, that’s about twice as many as Kate Upton — and they gain strength from her positive bodyimage reinforcement and unguarded honesty. She’s also a shrewd marketer and businesswoman, turning her company Alexiss Swimwear into a global force, all while recently earning her MBA and contemplating a doctorate. But there is one title that she has proudly added to her resume recently. World Traveler.
“We are constantly learning new cultures, seeing new places, expanding our minds.” 74
JETSETMAG.COM
Alexiss’ assurgent modeling career and massive international popularity have given her the chance to travel the globe, absorbing the myriad civilizations she encounters along the way. “I want to do a different country a month,” she says, “I just want to immerse myself in as many places and cultures as I can.” Paris, Cape Town, Iceland, Santorini, Cabo, Maldives...her travels from 2017 alone would impress almost any jetsetter, but she’s quick to emphasize that it’s not all about five-star resorts and living in isolation. “We were in Thailand, and we met a couple that spoke 11 languages,” she says, “It inspired me to search for more in my travels and my education.” Alexiss has been searching for more since a very young age. She comes from humble means. Raised by a single mom in the rough city of Chelsea, Massachusetts, she was bullied as a kid and “constantly threatened and chased home with knives.” Soon she found the best way to protect herself was to work steadily. She took on after school programs and as many extracurricular activities as she could find. “It gave me purpose and kept me safe,” she says. As a teenager, she began doing beauty pageants. She quickly knew she wanted to be a model, but because of her height and figure (“I’ve always been thicker, I’ve always been vertically challenged,” she says), she had to get used to people telling her she would never make it. Not one to be deterred, while attending college, Alexiss took as many pictures as she could, working hard to not just build a portfolio, but teach herself the fundamentals of photography. Her big break came from a Playboy model contest that allowed her to leverage her
shrewd marketing and self-promoting prowess. She won with 2.2 million votes. The victory was a symbolic one for all plus-size models and helped launch Alexiss’ career and swimwear line, yet she is quick to point out that her success didn’t happen overnight. “I have failed many times,” she says, “I have been rejected many times...I was told I would never be a catalog model; now I am one of the top plus-size models in the world.” Perhaps the most remarkable fact about Alexiss is that despite her success, she still handles almost everything herself. She doesn’t have an agent, a manager, or a publicist. Despite having millions of followers, she still manages all of her social media accounts personally, always taking the time to engage with her fans. But the beautiful pictures you see on her Instagram page are taken by her fiancee and business partner Travis Yohe. Despite being over a year away, Alexiss has already meticulously plotted their wedding, right down to the penguins that will be attending. “It’s going to be pretty over-the-top,” she admits. In the meantime, she is determined to make the most of her hard-earned success. “I know that I am not going to look like this forever,” she tells me. “I don’t want to be old and wishing I’d done more.” She also plans to continue to travel the world alongside Yohe. “We are constantly learning new cultures, seeing new places, expanding our minds,” she tells me. When I ask her what advice she has to offer girls aspiring to make it in her industry, she says, “If I can do it, you can do it. It just takes a lot of work...but anything is possible with determination.” Alexiss is living proof.

Remembering to Hustle With Purpose By Daymond John 76

I
begin my new book with a quote from the Dalai Lama. In it, he says his biggest surprise about humanity is that we sacrifice our health to make money, and then spend our money to take care of our health. He goes on to say that as a result, “Man does not live in the present or the future. He lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” It is powerful stuff, and it really opened my eyes to the cruel reality that many successful people face. We work so hard to build an empire that we sacrifice our lives and health to get there.
Just look at Steve Jobs. Probably the most admired entrepreneur of the past century, anyone who’s read Walter Isaacson’s brilliant biography of him knows that he was notoriously obsessive and devoted to his work. The man often worked from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and would go without sleep altogether when he was locked into a groundbreaking project like the iPhone. He would demand things of his team that were deemed impossible, but somehow under his leadership, they found a way. As a result of his tireless efforts, he made Apple what it is today and left us with some of the most substantial innovations of our time...but he also wore himself down and died at the age of 56. Now as you may know, in April, I learned I had stage II thyroid cancer. Luckily after having surgery to remove the nodule on my neck, I am fine. But the incident put things into perspective for me. As anyone does when faced with their own mortality, I began to reflect. It took this giant wake-up call for me to realize that the reason I was put on this earth was to make life better for the people around me — not just the people I love and keep close, but the people all around me. So how do you change the world like Steve Jobs and still have time for your family or your health? Because if you think about it, time is the only thing we can’t get back in this world. Once we spend it, it’s gone, so you’ve got to make sure you’re investing it wisely. And whether we have a hundred dollars in the bank or a hundred million, we all get the same twenty-four hours a day. The key is learning how to put those hours to work for you so that you can make an impact while being as productive as possible.
“One common trait I notice in all the people I meet who are thriving and striving: every single one of them has got a killer work ethic.” ISSUE 4 . 2017

Altitude // Shark Talk Every day I get up — before the sun, some mornings — and start grinding at my goals, hard. I go to sleep—stupid-late, most nights — still grinding. Because when I hear people say there isn’t time enough in the day to do everything they need to do, it gets me upset. Yeah, I get that it sometimes feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day, but the feeling only hits me when I’m not using those hours wisely. When I’m not efficient, organized, on it. But if I’m on top of my game, in tireless pursuit, there’s always time. And if it starts looking like the clock is about to run out on me, I’ll work even harder. Now I’ve seen some things, met all kinds of interesting, ridiculously successful people. I’ve hung around with world leaders and game-changers. I’m always learning from these people, and one of the things I’ve learned is that there is no secret formula for success. However, there are specific essential ingredients that are always in the mix. One common trait I notice in all the people I meet who are thriving and striving: every single one of them has got a killer work ethic. Seriously, they are up and at it each and every day, and they are at it hard. You could call it drive. You could call it determination. You could call it oomph, grit, or hustle. I call it rising and grinding. And in my new book, Rise and Grind, l share a bunch of my day-to-day habits and routines to show how I make the best use of my 24/7. I also break down the rituals of some of the world’s most successful people, from all walks of life — people
who inspire me, who amaze me, who push me to be the very best I can be. I asked them what they do as soon as they get up in the morning, where they turn for inspiration, how they organize their days. I asked them some tougher questions, too — questions I’m asked almost every day by aspiring entrepreneurs who want to make something of themselves, and by corporate leaders who bring me in to motivate their employees and get them to start thinking outside the box. As a successful person yourself, I am sure you have your own set of rules and routines for maximizing productivity every day. I am sure you have your own specific guidelines for grinding. But my advice is never to forget that we grind to get and keep ahead, but that we also grind to make our world a better place for the people we love. For some of us, that might mean our world close to home. For others, we might keep a bigger picture in mind. At the very least, we always need to make time for our loved ones (and because we care about them, take the best possible care of our health) and be mindful of the impact we are leaving on the world. So keep grinding my friends...just make sure you’re doing it efficiently and never losing sight of what’s important.

HOW TO GAIN CUSTOMER LOYALTY FOR LIFE
BY BARRY LABOV
L
et’s say you go to a walk-in clinic because you’re ill. You see a doctor, get some medicine, and begin to feel better. A few days later, someone from the clinic calls to see how you’re feeling and asks if you have any questions for the doctor. It’s not a robocall, and not even your regular doctor. But, they still take the time to follow up with you. It’s not something you’d expect from a busy health clinic where, in general, you expect to be treated like one of the masses. That’s what you’d call a super-pleasing action. And it’s super-pleasing that will win customers for life, every time.

As the world gets busier and more impersonal, super-pleasing behaviors really stand out in customers’ minds. When a company or person goes out of their way to make sure you have what you need and more, it makes a big impression. And it’s usually an action that’s taken with no expectation of getting something in return other than the satisfaction that you did something nice, helpful or caring. You never know when an occasion to super-please will present itself. An opportunity came along just a few weeks ago at the Spanish Grand Prix when former F1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen crashed his Ferrari on the first corner. A young fan in the stands burst into tears after seeing his favorite driver was out of the race so soon. Ferrari took the opportunity to super-please someone who isn’t old enough to drive, let alone purchase one of their high-preformance vehicles. They escorted the fan into the private Ferrari garage where he got to watch the rest of the race alongside his idol, Raikkonen. It’s a memory that will remain with that boy for the rest of his life. Ritz-Carlton is another brand that’s been known to superplease. An occasion to super-please came along when a guest’s son forgot his favorite stuffed giraffe at one of the company’s hotels. The only way the child’s father could get him to sleep without the giraffe was to tell him that the animal was taking an extended vacation and would be home soon. Ritz-Carlton not only returned the giraffe safely to his owner, but took photos of him at the pool and other locations around the hotel and sent them and a few other gifts to the boy. It was a happy ending and showed the company’s willingness to go beyond the call of duty to please its customers. Part of super-pleasing is always keeping it top of mind and looking for opportunities to truly make a customer’s day. A Zappos

customer needed to return some shoes, but ended up not sending them back for a while because her mother had passed away. When Zappos contacted her about the status of the return, she explained why she hadn’t had a chance to mail them back yet. Zappos not only arranged for the shoes to be picked up, but sent the customer some flowers, expressing sympathy for her loss. The customer was overwhelmed by the kind act. Super-pleasing acts don’t have to be big, extravagant gestures to make an impact. It could be just taking the time to pick up the phone and make sure a customer is happy and satisfied. It might be a salesperson taking the time to call and wish a customer a happy birthday. It can be sending an article that might be of interest to a client, helping them stay on top of industry news. These kinds of actions stand out because customer service is often so poor, sterile, and rife with hassles. To be super-pleasing, a company must have a customer-centric culture. Employees need the right tools and the freedom to make decisions that help them go above and beyond in serving customers. Super-pleasing opportunities can happen in an instant, so if an employee has to check with a supervisor to get permission for something, the opportunity may have already passed. It also takes a keen sense of observation. Whether it’s noticing a customer’s facial expression or detecting a particular challenge someone is having, being overly observant is essential. Super-pleasing not only impacts the recipient, but those who hear about it as well. It’s uplifting to read stories of super-pleasing actions. And it can not only win a customer’s loyalty, but influence others to consider your product or services. The results can be remarkable.

HOW POPULATION CHANGES WILL AFFECT THE REAL ESTATE MARKET BY KEN MCELROY

he U.S. Population is approximately 325 million people and growing at approximately 2.3 million people per year. To put that into perspective, that means four new people are born each minute, and 6,107 are people born each day. Think about that for a minute. Our population is growing by almost 200,000 people every month. An increase of that magnitude puts severe pressure on an economy. Each city and state has its own economy, and if an economy is not growing at the same rate as the population, then it suffers demonstrably. But there’s always a silver lining. How this population growth is dispersed will help determine how you find your best real estate deals.

Altitude // Estates Most population estimates are based on the three most important metrics of the population: births, deaths, and net international migration. These details are significant when selecting a market and type of real estate, but I also want to portray the bigger picture. Of these three parameters, net immigration is the least predictable but most important for forecasting future population. This is because as the U.S. population continues to age our domestic death rates slowly approach our birth rates. We will continue to add net population at the rate of about 1.35 million people for 2017 and again in 2018, but the net immigration figure for 2017 will be 88 million. (The immigration figures for 2018 are still up for debate.) By 2023 and beyond, the rate of expected population growth from net migration exceeds that of births-minus-deaths. This moment is just five years away, which is why this current administration’s policies on immigration are so important for real estate. Immigration will be a major factor for the growth of the nation.
correlating immigration trends. But the impact of immigration on population growth estimates can vary widely. While border states first come to mind as areas that could be heavily reliant on immigration for population growth, many of these regions also attract a large U.S. migration, making immigration a small part of total growth (e.g., immigration accounted for only five percent of population growth in Texas and Arizona). This is one of the primary reasons why my company positioned itself in both Arizona and Texas, as these states have generally been characterized as pro-growth, which has attracted new businesses and jobs, and the net immigration numbers in these states are high. The high population and employment growth numbers have put significant upward pressure on demand for retail, single family homes, and rentals, for instance. In real estate — especially when investing your money and more importantly other people’s money (OPM) — you had better understand these numbers because each city and state in this nation is either moving forward or backward.
“If you want to be a great investor, spend not where the population growth is, but where it’s going to be.”
86
You can find this information freely from the U.S. Census as well as Pew Research Center and others. (See for example the recent Pew study “Immigration projected to drive growth in U.S. working-age population through at least 2035,” by Jeffrey S. Passel and D’Vera Cohn.) Now, I don’t want to get caught up in the politics of immigration; I just want you to understand the potential impact on our economy and specifically real estate as it relates to our country’s population growth, both positively and adversely. A lot can happen in the next 15 to 20 years regarding this issue, and it’s an important topic to follow. Now it’s critical to look at how each city and state will handle the nearly 200,000 new people per month being added to the country with the primary drivers of births, deaths, and immigration. The simple way would be to look at each state’s birth and death records — which is public information — and then examine at the JETSETMAG.COM
They all have their own economy, and population growth is the biggest driving factor. There is a multitude of indicators to determine which direction and state or city might be going, but the facts are easy to follow. Net population creates demand. As a result, such things as housing, goods, and services are needed in high-demand areas to keep up with that demand. If the demand continues to outpace the supply of these things, then you start to see rising service prices, rental rates, home prices, commercial office rent, and so on. A state’s net migration affects everything. Consider senior living needs like housing, medical campuses, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and employees such as doctors and nurses. On the other end of the life cycle, consider the same kind of pressures on housing, retail, and staff to support the influx of newborns or live births. It’s important to understand the numbers when you are investing.

I’ve written a lot in the past about how the millennials are changing the way we shop and live, and the millennial generation might grab all the headlines, but it won’t be long before Generation Z reaches the market. They’re teenagers now, but Gen Z is almost on the cusp of being able to buy homes, with the first Gen Zers reaching their 18th birthdays this year. According to the National Association of Realtors, Gen X is quite different from the preceding generation that came of age in the midst of the recession, war, terrorism, and stock-market collapse, and was burned by the housing downturn and crushing student-loan debt. Gen Z will come of age with low interest rates, better job prospects, and higher wages to help cushion the high costs of college education. As these Gen Zers hit the market, it will be important to watch how they impact the economy. The same holds true with the Millenials and the seniors. Where they move and why will have severe impacts on real estate. As the great Wayne Gretzky said, “A good hockey player plays where the puck is...a great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be.” The same is true in real estate investing. If you want to be a great investor, spend not where the population growth is, but where it’s going to be. Today, many real estate investors are chasing deals in markets that will have average or below-average results because they are not following these core principles. Again, stick with facts and the numbers, do your research. In our company — which is in the rental housing business — there are a few things that I believe may happen over the next 15 years (i.e., where the puck is going): 1. More than 100,000 new rental units will be needed by 2030 in states such as California, Georgia, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, New York, Texas, and Washington.
88
JETSETMAG.COM
2. The Western U.S., Texas, Florida and North Carolina are expected to have the greatest need for new rental housing through 2030, although all states will require more housing. The fastest economic and household growth will continue in low-cost, business friendly states, primarily in the Southeast and Mountain West.
3. The over-65 age cohort will account for a large part of population growth going forward across all states, especially Florida, Maine, W. Virginia, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Montana, Delaware, and Hawaii. Longer term, Arizona, and Nevada will also add more senior citizens than average. 4. U.S. metro markets will face different challenges during the next fifteen years. Some markets are facing serious affordability issues. Half or more of renters in Miami and Honolulu spend 35 percent or more of their income on rent with 45 percent or more of renters in Los Angeles, New Orleans, Orlando, San Diego, Sacramento, and New York spending 35 percent or more of income on rent.
These are summaries generated from a multitude of concrete facts. As you pick your investment category or consider career changes, it’s best to understand what industries and sectors will be growing positively. It’s always best to look at the bigger picture. When it doubt, just remember to follow the facts. Ken McElroy is the co-partner of MC Companies, a real estate investment, development and management company located in Scottsdale, Ariz. hose of us who have attained massive success know that regardless of how much we’ve achieved, there is always another brass ring dangling in the distance. It’s in our DNA. Somewhere inside of each of us lies a fierce, unwavering thirst for more. First, we want to become a millionaire. Then, we want to become a multi-millionaire. After that, we set our eyes on 100 million, and then...the Big B, a billion dollars. It is the ultimate monetary prize.

ccording to Forbes, there are currently a record 2,043 billionaires in the world (up from 1,810 last year). If you are already in this elite club, congrats. You’ve made it. You possess the kind of wealth that can change the world and you can probably stop reading now. But what about the rest of us on the outside looking in? How do we reach the Big B? My path to the Big B has been a long and strenuous one. As graduating valedictorian from the School of Hard Knocks, I once felt trapped inside of a maze. Every time I hit a wall, I had to change directions. It became infuriating. I would think to myself, How many damn walls do I have to hit before I finally reach the end?
Being the son of a mathematician and a biochemical engineer, people assume I lived a privileged childhood, but I grew up dirt poor. My parents emigrated to the United States to follow a private school movement called the Maharishi School. The only good thing about the school was that I received free tuition and family housing in a trailer park. I spent my spare time working in a youth shelter and had very little financial support. The owner of the shelter, my childhood mentor Rolland Wells, focused his entire life on educating those in impoverished cities across the globe. His idea was that even in the most desolate parts of the world, people’s drive, willingness to learn, and determination for a better life can still trump their environment.
“The daily noise in the market is a reflection of base human emotions like fear and greed, and these things exhibit clearly defined patterns.” I then knew in my heart that I had to do something to help give back. But I didn’t want to go down the conventional route. I saw the financial struggles Roland had to endure running a non-profit — constantly looking for grants and kissing asses to raise money. And yet I also saw first-hand what someone like him could accomplish with 100,000 dollars. So I imagined what he could do with a million... or better yet, the Big B. He could truly change the world. And so could I. First I just needed to find an industry where a mere sliver of the market share could equal the Big B and focus all my energy on it. What I discovered was Forex. If you’re unfamiliar, Forex is a market that trades nearly $5.3 trillion every single day. Its daily volume dwarfs that of all stocks, commodities, and bonds, and is equal to about 53 times that of the New York Stock Exchange. Some of the big banks allocate as much as twenty to thirty percent of their funds into the Forex market and generate between forty and sixty percent of their total profits through trading currencies. ISSUE 4 . 2017
91
Altitude // Trades If you’ve never heard of Forex, don’t worry. I hadn’t either. This is because as far back in the mid-Nineties, the market was exclusive to banks and corporations that could pull together over $40 to $50 million minimum in liquidity. Smart traders gravitated towards it because the more money you have on margin in the Forex market, the more money you can make, and the less risk you have. We follow a strict two percent risk management system which means, if you have 100k in the market, the most you can lose on a trade is 2k, and the most you could gain is 4k (we always go 2:1). Now take that 100k and multiply it by 10, or 100, or 500, and factor in that some successful traders win 70 percent of the time. This market indeed makes millionaires into billionaires. As my expertise in Forex grew, I met Richard Gardner. One of the most brilliant technologists I’ve ever encountered, Richard was a lead developer/architect for IBM Watson and built the largest global sentiment database in the world. He drastically changed the way I traded and made me start thinking in probabilities. I began looking at the world differently, paying attention to the mood (or sentiment) of our nation through reading various news apps and gauging investor’s risk appetite. What I discovered was life-changing. I had finally reached the center of the maze. Richard made me realize that the daily noise in the market is a reflection of base human emotions like fear and greed, and these things exhibit clearly defined patterns. Traders around the world use advanced trading systems to map exact turning points in the market. When these patterns point in the same direction as the economic fundamentals (investor risk appetite, natural disasters, and global health), one can shift the probabilities in their favor. After years of fine-tuning my theories and working on advisory boards for major hedge funds, prop funds, and some of the most successful Forex traders on the planet, I finally created a high
92
JETSETMAG.COM
probability system for retail traders. The system takes into account economic data and fundamental analysis, technical analysis, and US risk sentiment to help one make educated trading decisions based on specific criteria. Through these criteria, I sparked the interest of all those funds and trading schools, before settling with the most sophisticated new school that teaches people how to change their lives by trading Forex, the Trading Institute. Today I run the entire curriculum at the Trading Institute, living my lifelong dream of educating others while simultaneously helping them see some serious returns. And as I inch closer to the Big B, I am already able to make witness substantive change in the lives of those around me. I feel my sense of purpose grow each day as I near my one financial goal. Because, as I mentioned, 233 new billionaires were created last year. They all came from different backgrounds and industries; they all had their own unique path to get to the Big B. Forex is my path. What’s yours?

CENTERING YOURSELF TO ACHIEVE GREATER BUSINESS CERTAINTY BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI
T
hirty-one years ago, I opened my second office on the 52nd floor of what is now William’s Tower in Houston. At the time, I noticed that occasionally amidst a highly productive and profitable day at my practice, I would find myself feeling elevated, inflated, and self-absorbed. My pride would start soaring and my chest would begin to puff; I would imagine myself to be more important than I actually was.
94
But shortly after coming home following such a day, I would frequently experience a series of humbling, pride neutralizing circumstances that would soon return me from my unstable pedestal to my rightful place as an equal with my spouse. If I resisted her feedback, I sustained my delusion of grandeur into the later evening and experienced a disturbed sleep and distant relationship. My spouse was doing her job of helping me try to be more loving and authentic, but I was too ornery at times to appreciate it. Sometimes after a largely sleepless night, I would then return to the office the next morning to discover more humbling challenges to deflate and balance me out. I would then experience a challenging, less productive day filled with the complementary inverse feeling about myself. While I was never diagnosed with mania or depression, I definitely experienced cyclothymic mood swings, reflected in my practice statistics and economics and which often distracted me from my primary aim of providing caring quality service. Upon declining into a reciprocal emotional low and beating myself up for doing it, my deflating, devaluing, and depressing energy would follow me home at that day’s end and lead me to be more humble, introverted, receptive, and quiet. But, then my spouse could see the day’s challenge on my face and was then there to reliably lift, encourage, and support me to correct balance like a tempering thermostat. She was once again doing her often under-appreciated JETSETMAG.COM
job of returning me to my more authentic center in between my polar opposites. She was assisting me in reaching the golden mean where I could be less focused on how great or discouraged I was, and more focused on what was truly higher in priority — caring for my patients and loving and providing for my family. After experiencing a few of these frustrating, recurring cycles and watching my daily stats which revealed them, I finally realized that if I didn’t govern myself I would keep requiring governance from the outside. So I decided to create a centering method to assist me in honing in on my authentic self and stabilizing my perceptions, moods, and ultimately my practice and home life. I documented the psychological and physiological behaviors that I would demonstrate when I was either up or down and created a questionnaire to assist me in self-monitoring these swings so as to stabilize my practice statistics and life. What follows is a slightly edited and more generic version of the original daily questionnaire. When I get up and elated in my office, what do I do? My inflated and elated state arose when I had lopsided my perceptions and sensed more positives than negatives, or more gains than losses. It represented a distortion of my awareness. It provided me with an opportunity to self-govern and re-center. So whenever I found myself up and elated, I would simply ask myself the following questions.

“Focusing on my daily accomplishments and positive actions, I feel myself lifting back up to normal. This exercise was a great way to quickly restore balance.
96
Who did I not fully provide service to today? What action step or approach did not work today? What patient came in that I respectfully acknowledged today? What patients did I not complete my paperwork on today? What special needs did my patients require that I overlooked? What promises did I not keep with patients or staff today? What important facts did I omit or forget about today? Who did I forget to call and care about today? What important report or form did I miss filling out today? Who did I forget to stimulate referrals from today? What did I avoid doing in my office today? What patient or staff member did I take for granted today? Who did I not thank today? What skill did I slack off on today? What new idea or inspiration did I miss acting upon today? Who did I not confront or hold accountable today? Who did I not share important educational information with today? What skill did I let slide today? What higher-priority action step did I forget today? What possible person could have felt I cared less for them today? What am I not thankful for today? What am I emotionally charged about today? Where have I not given my full attention today? Where have I acted impulsively today? Which patient have I ignored today? Who did I not share my appreciation with today? What new business opportunity did I pass up on today? Where did I sway from a wise patient management today? Where/when did I not listen to my inner intuitive voice today? JETSETMAG.COM
Taking the time to answer these questions was a great way to help balance me out and bring me back to reality. Conversely, whenever I would feel the slip into depression or negativity, I would ask the inverse of these questions. Instead of asking who did I not fully provide service to, I would ask who I did. And soon after focusing on my daily accomplishments and positive actions, I feel myself lifting back up to normal. This exercise was a great way to quickly restore balance. My advice? Take this general questionnaire and tailor it to your business and tendencies. Then, at the end of each day, run through either a positive or negative version to bring you back up or down. Regardless of your general disposition, after doing this for a while, you should discover your business and personal life becoming more certain, stable, and fruitful. Because life is all about balance. Keep that in mind on your journey to greater success.

ven if you don’t know much about Matt Damon’s biography, you probably know where he was born. Just like his peers Mark Wahlberg and Ben Affleck (the latter of whom he will forever be linked to), the actor is proudly from Boston and exudes its quintessential down-to-earth toughness. There is something ineffably unmistakable about people from the city (especially South Boston), but their blissfully defiant, world-beating mindset is best encapsulated by Damon’s cohorts in the movie that changed his life forever twenty years ago: Good Will Hunting. But just like his character in that film, Damon seems more cerebral than one might first assume as if he’s quietly pondering life’s grander mysteries while carrying on as a charming everyman-turned-A-List movie star.
Determined, politically active, and never one to back down from a fight, the former Harvard student, and the five-time Oscar nominee has an air of subtle profundity to him. “He’s very sneaky how talented he is as an actor,” says George Clooney, Damon’s old friend and director of his latest film Suburbicon (out October 27). “You don’t see him sweat at all.” At 46 years of age, he has now been performing the vast majority of his life, giving subtly solid performances in over 60 films. As viewers, we tend to take his sneaky talent for granted, but it is likely why so many top directors like Clooney adore him. From Spielberg to Soderberg, Eastwood to Scorsese, the preeminent auteurs of our time can’t say enough about Damon’s talent, no-frills demeanor, and work ethic. He shows up and does reliably great work every time without any hassle or pretentiousness. Today we take Damon’s comforting screen presence for granted so much that we might overlook the painstaking work it took for him to get here. Of course, almost everyone knows the story of Good Will Hunting. It’s a practically mythological tale of how Damon and his fellow struggling actor buddy Affleck lived together off Kraft Mac-N-Cheese in a crummy apartment while writing the screenplay that would win them the Oscar and catapult them both into the realm of Hollywood royalty. Everyone loves the idea of a couple of average guys, “dreamers from Southie,” breaking into one of the most elite circles in the world. But people forget that the script was actually born from a writing exercise in one of Damon’s English classes while he was attending Harvard years earlier. That Damon ever got accepted into Harvard in the first place speaks to his intellectual and creative capacity. But just like Will Hunting, he always yearned for more. For him, acting was forever the ultimate prize, and as the story
goes, he would routinely skip his Harvard classes to take on auditions. Eventually, he dropped out entirely when he landed a role in 1993’s Geronimo: An American Legend, a film he thought would launch his career...but ended up going nowhere. Damon describes these early years as “fighting for table scraps,” and was constantly battling the actors who would eventually define his generation, guys like Edward Norton, for work. “You’d go in and fight each other,” Damon says, “and if you got hold of a role, you’d have to make enough of an impression to get another job.” When he lost a very juicy part in 1996’s Primal Fear to Norton, Damon says he “knew it was an instant career changer for whoever got it.” He was right, as Norton ended up landing an Oscar nomination for the performance, his first major film role. But Damon would get to make his impression soon when he landed a part in the Denzel Washington film Courage Under Fire that same year. To play the movie’s malnourished Army medic, Damon had to shed an astonishing 60 pounds in a short period. (“All I ate was chicken breast, he says. “It’s not like I had a chef or anything...I just made it up, and that was incredibly challenging.”) But his efforts and toil paid off, as the film got the attention of much of Hollywood. Before he knew it, he was shooting Good Will Hunting alongside the late, great Robin Williams. The film received nine Oscar nominations (including one for Best Actor for Damon), and the rest is history. If you ask the average American male what his favorite films from the late Nineties are, chances are they mention at least one of the three movies Damon made in the subsequent two years: Saving Private Ryan, Rounders, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. And by the turn of the century, the man had managed to gain respect as both a dramatic character actor and a traditional leading man. ISSUE 4 . 2017

Altitude // Feature Profile Then in 2002, The Bourne Identity made him a global action hero. (To remember how improbable this was at the time, go back and watch the brilliant scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin where Paul Rudd describes his incredulity about the matter.) Five years later, Forbes named him “Hollywood’s most bankable actor.” But Damon continued to avoid the typical path and make bold and interesting choices with films like Invictus, The Informant!, and Behind the Candelabra. By the time he received his third acting Oscar nomination last year for The Martian, one might have wondered what kind of role Matt Damon couldn’t pull off. But even he admits that both of the films he has coming out this year were challenging to just get off the ground. “I’m really proud they got made,” he says. “To be a part of [these two movies] and know that they came out of the Hollywood system is great because it means we’re not totally dead yet.” First up, Suburbicon. The film is a dark but humorous satirical look at a seemingly idyllic suburban community housing an insidious

underbelly. Damon plays Gardner Lodge, on the surface a loving husband and father who on a whim hatches a plan to stage a home invasion for the insurance money and run off with his sister-inlaw, played by Julianne Moore. The movie is full of plot twists and tonal shifts and weighty subject matter that make it one of the most ambitious projects its director and star have ever tackled. The film forced Damon to play a character who is both extraordinarily complex and difficult to empathize with (not unlike the now-iconic Tom Ripley). Very few actors would be willing to take on such a role, and even fewer could pull it off. In doing so, Damon only further endeared himself to his longtime friend and six-time collaborator Clooney. “I don’t know a better actor I’ve seen in my life,” Clooney says. “He’s... eminently watchable...and, quite honestly, he’s great to work with.” Damon is equally complimentary of his old friend and says that great directors are the one thing he looks for when searching for a role. “That’s all that matters in film,” he says. “A mediocre director will ruin a great piece of material.” JETSETMAG.COM
No one would ever call the director of Damon’s second film of the year mediocre. Out December 22, Downsizing is directed by universally respected two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants), and Damon is clearly a fan. “[My] job is so much easier with a director that’s so sure-handed,” Damon says of Payne, “Because you always know where you are; you always know exactly what it is that you need to convey.” The film has one of those brilliantly absurd high concepts we don’t get to see that often in grown-up films anymore. In it, Damon and the always enjoyable Kirstin Wiig play a couple that agrees to be shrunk down to about five inches tall so that they can live a much more Jetset lifestyle (you see, their $52,000 bank account equates to about $12.5 million in “Small World”). If this all sounds incredibly absurd, it’s because it is. But its also unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and Damon and Payne ground the film in just enough reality to sell the concept. Along with
Damon as Paul Safranek in Downsizing (Paramount Pictures)
Damon as Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity (Universal Pictures)
Subrubicon, it marks the fourth consecutive film Damon has made without a break (“Two solid years of work,” he says), and the actor admits to being both exhausted and anxious to spend more time with his wife Luciana and their four daughters. (“I have to be with my family,” he adds.) So aside from a bit part in the female-led Ocean’s Eleven spinoff, Ocean’s Eight, Damon currently has no acting roles on the horizon. (When asked about a fifth Bourne film, the actor says “maybe someday.”) But Damon does have four upcoming projects he’s producing (he now has 20 production credits to his name, including last year’s Oscar-winning Manchester By the Sea), and far more significant things than movies to focus on. As the co-founder of Water.org, he has been working to help people across the world get access to clean drinking water. The way he sees it, his efforts extend beyond a fundamental moral imperative. “It’s smart money,” Damon says, “I mean, for every dollar you’re putting in to the water sector, you’re getting back seven...it just makes sense.” Harvard is starting to make sense now too.

he has a megawatt smile, a heart of gold, and a confident and secure aura of elegance. And oh yeah, Adaliz Martinez has one more thing that is as impressive as she is and the road she’s traveled to get to this point — the title of Miss Jetset 2017.
While the sophisticated and proprietary computer algorithms Jetset uses to run the most exciting online competitions in the world noted that Martinez officially won the crown on August 2nd, the moment it hit home for our 33-year-old title-holder from Orlando came a little later. No, the real pinch-me moment for Martinez was on October 7th, when she began riding a tidal wave of over-the-top luxury lifestyle experiences, world-class pampering, and magical moments in traveling from her hometown to center stage at the 2017 Miss Jetset Party. Thanks to some friends of ours, her modes of transportation on the day were as luxury as possible, and included a Rolls-Royce Dawn convertible provided by Lion Heart Lifestyle, which transported Martinez to our favorite FBO, ACI Jet at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, where a private jet courtesy of Ion Jets was waiting on the
“I have been through a lot in my life, and I’m always sharing stories with others so they can learn from my successes as well as my failures.” tarmac. From there, she was whisked away to Jetset headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona, and it finally started to sink in just how big of a deal it was to win a global phenomenon like Miss Jetset. Martinez was one of over 10,000 hopefuls from around the world who started out when the competition commenced, and her goals at the beginning were modest. “In the beginning, I didn’t really have goals,” she tells me onboard the jet heading to Scottsdale, “but once I got further into the competition, and began to accept it might happen...I became a big advocate for the cause behind it, the B+ Foundation.” This incredible organization devoted to combating children’s cancer resonated particularly strongly with Martinez, who lost both of her parents and several loved ones to the disease. Martinez was properly motivated, and with the encouragement and support of her 12 and 15-year-old sons and loving boyfriend and motivating partner in business and life, Robert Mercado, she went to work. A successful professional in the fields of real estate and network marketing, she was strategic in her approach and lent a personal touch of gratitude and motivation to her numerous supporters and donors. As the competition progressed, Martinez’ confidence grew, as did her support, culminating in a victory that assured her a lifechanging prize of over $100,000 in cash and prizes, and everything that comes with being the face of an internationally recognized global lifestyle brand. “When the competition ended I thought to myself, ‘what do I do now?’” she says. She recalls a quote from one of her biggest inspirations in business and life, Robert Kiyosaki: “Winners are not afraid of losing. But losers are. Failure is part of the process of success.
Adaliz is what we call the “real deal” in the entertainment world. She’s authentic, beautiful inside and out, and a great representation of what it means to be Miss Jetset. And with no prior modeling experience, she believes that the fact that she was able to capture the crown should provide hope for others to follow their dreams. Pretty much everyone at Jetset who encountered Martinez was impressed with that. “I was so impressed as I watched Adaliz progress through the competition, and saw how disciplined she was in her approach,” Jetset Publisher and CEO Darrin Austin said. “She was even more impressive in person..we have found a truly deserving winner.” What has become a much-anticipated part of the Miss Jetset experience is the annual VIP red carpet party, and hundreds of people came out to celebrate in Scottsdale. It was a continuation of the whirlwind, dream-come-true weekend for Martinez, as the next day she enjoyed an exhilarating day of racing and spine-tingling
People who avoid failure also avoid success.” She says it’s “exactly” how she felt when she learned the news. “The unknown is a very scary thing to have to deal with,” she adds, “[but] you just have to let go and leave it in God’s hands and believe his plan is bigger than we could ever imagine.” As Martinez morphed from hard-working hopeful to hard-fought and humble Miss Jetset, she had time to contemplate what she would do with her newfound ability to reach people through a worldwide platform. Beyond modeling and commercial work — and she got some great practice after a glamorous photo shoot with renowned photographer Phyllis Lane — the devoted mother wants to make sure she uses her high-profile status to show other people what is possible, and provide new opportunities for her family and followers that may not have existed before. “I look forward to inspiring others to raise their belief levels on their true capabilities in life,” she says.
excitement at the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Phoenix. And then, the next day amidst her very first professional photo shoot, Miss Jetset received one last surprise, a visit from her personal hero and Jetset Executive Editor, Robert Kiyosaki. Kiyosaki gave her a signed copy of his book and offered a little extra inspiration before she flew back to Orlando. When we spoke later, she was more determined than ever. “I’d love to help others learn from my experiences and help them achieve higher success without having to go through the adversities I encountered,” she says. Martinez is committed to spreading cancer awareness and sharing her passion for alkalized water, something that led to her involvement with the company Revive H2. We know that regardless of where the world takes her, her future is going to be an exciting journey filled with a whole new set of intriguing and promising possibilities. Here’s to your success, Adaliz. AdalizMartinez.com

ACI Jet
PROVING THE IMPORTANCE OF IN-HOUSE FBO MAINTENANCE BY DOUGLAS WILSON
O
114
ne can be forgiven if the name ACI Jet doesn’t exactly conjure images of an aircraft maintenance company. Because, although maintenance is essential to safe and reliable air travel, it isn’t necessarily as glamorous as globetrotting on ACI Jet’s Gulfstream G650, or arriving in your own private aircraft to any one of their now four FBOs in California. Yet, one must keep in mind that the wheels of that Gulfstream would remain firmly on the ground if it weren’t for the extensive in-house maintenance capabilities of quality FBOs like ACI. And yet, as jet aircraft have become more sophisticated over the years, rather than embrace and specialize in it, FBOs have chosen to exit the maintenance business. The result today means many aircraft owners are left to rely on original equipment manufacturer (OEM) service centers. While its the equivalent of taking your Bentley to the Bentley dealer, OEM maintenance support for aircraft isn’t always on time or budget. Conversely, in the increasingly specialized world of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) — industry parlance for what most of us would refer to as aircraft maintenance — ACI Jet stands out not only as an FBO offering aircraft maintenance but one that does it exceedingly well. The statistics alone bear consideration. ACI Jet has some 22 Airframe and Powerplant Technicians, five Quality Control Inspectors, and a pair of Avionics Technicians supported by in-house parts JETSETMAG.COM
specialists and an experienced management team and led by VP of Aircraft Maintenance Dave Jensen (himself a former US Air Force Crew Chief on KC-10 Extender aircraft). This team is only enhanced by their facilities, like the state-of-the-art, 37,000-square foot maintenance hangar in San Luis Obispo, and the in-house wheel and tire shop, interior refurbishment center, and Mobile Service Unit (MSU) at their newest location in Santa Ana. In summation, this is clearly not some small FBO that happens to turn a wrench when they’re not busy flying planes. No, this is a fully certified, FAR Part 145 Repair Station maintaining a vast fleet of jets including Citations, Challengers, and large-cabin Gulfstream aircraft. Why those models? ACI Jet President William “Bill” Borgsmiller points out they specialize in maintaining the same airframe types they fly, adding a simple-yet-thoughtful musing for good measure:
“After all, would you take your car to a mechanic that didn’t own a car himself?”
In that one sentence, Borgsmiller summarizes his company’s maintenance philosophy effortlessly. Remind me to call my mechanic and ask if he owns a car.

or 2017, U.S. News and World Report ranks Austin as the number one city in America to live. Austin is also one of the healthiest and fittest cities according to Forbes and WalletHub. With 50 people moving to Austin every day, quality real estate is becoming a scarce commodity. The spectacular Winn Ranch — located on the north cliffs of beautiful Lake Travis and just minutes away from Austin — is one of the premier properties to come on the market in recent times. There are no other properties like it. It encompasses 514 acres high above the main body of the lake with over 4,000 feet of main body lake frontage and another 3,000 feet of cove frontage. A private boat ramp allows lake access even when the lake is at it’s lowest. Much of the property has been cleared of cedar and large, native oaks are abundant. For the discerning buyer, the possibilities are endless. Rather than buying someone else’s idea of a palatial mansion, the new owner could design and build their own special place. Several potential building sites afford high, unparalleled vistas of the lake. JETSETMAG.COM
The new owner would be the envy of friends and business associates. Or, the new owner might decide to develop the property as high-end estates. City water and utilities are available to half of the ranch and, if desired, the city could annex the remaining portion. The largest private dock on Lake Travis and a private, although currently inactive heliport and hangar, can be included for an additional price. By car, Austin, the Domain shopping center and Austin-Bergstrom airport are all within 30 to 60 minutes driving time. By helicopter, downtown Austin is only 11 minutes away. A property of this size, location, and beauty comes on the market once in a lifetime. The possibilities are endless. Property ID: 4264583

135 2017 MISS JETSET PARTY 136 ACI JET CELEBRATION 138 EVENTS CALENDAR
Jetset Celebrates and Donates BY MATTHEW VON DAVEN
o
n Saturday, October 11, 2017, hundreds of VIPs from around the world flocked to the private jet hangar at Jetset’s Scottsdale, Arizona headquarters for this exclusive party. The purpose of the evening was to give a sizable donation to the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation and celebrate the new Miss Jetset, Adaliz Martinez, and all the fantastic women who competed for the Miss Jetset crown. Hosted by Jetset, Ion Jets, and CrowVote, the event featured athletes, business luminaries, and celebrities, like best-selling author and longtime Jetset contributor Robert Kiyosaki. “I am honored to be a part of an organization that does their part to give back to such noble causes,” Kiyosaki said on the red carpet. Things kicked up a notch around 10 pm, as whispers in the crowd led to people gathering near the taxiway where soon — in a sight that indeed had to be seen to be believed — a private jet landed in the middle of the party. As the audience cheered, the plane rolled towards the hangar, a red carpet was extended, and none other than
Miss Jetset herself, Martinez, stepped off the plane and greeted our guests. She was then escorted through the crowd dramatically, swarms of guests trailing behind her, and made her way to the stage. There, Jetset CEO Darrin Austin thanked guests before presenting a check to the B+ Foundation for $74,048. “Let this be just another step in our battle towards ending pediatric cancer,” Austin said. The crowd was then greeted by Extra host Mario Lopez, who appeared onscreen live from the Universal Studios set of the show to personally congratulate Martinez. Lopez apologized for not being in attendance. “I wish I was there in Scottsdale with all you guys celebrating,” he said before extending “a big congratulations to everyone who competed this year, as well as my friends at Jetset Magazine for making it all happen.” After that, Martinez was officially crowned as Miss Jetset and presented with a check for $50,000. It was a triumphant moment, but the night was only beginning as guests then got to pose for pictures with Martinez and celebrate the rest of the evening in true Jetset style. ISSUE 4 . 2017

n July 31st, ACI Jet threw a lavish celebration at its newly opened FBO at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. Jetset was proud to be in attendance celebrating this significant event for California’s private aviation community. We make no secret that ACI Jet is one of our favorite FBOs in the world. In the last issue, I wrote about how in a true David and Goliath story, the company prevailed over the larger competition to become the newest FBO at John Wayne, and on Page 114, you can read all about the firstrate maintenance programs at their facilities. But it’s the other things the FBO does to give back that help distinguish it even more. The evening was a lavish affair made even more special by a $25,000 donation made to various funds in memory of fallen officer Keith Boyer. Boyer was a 27-year veteran of nearby city Whittier’s JETSETMAG.COM
police force and honoring him was a great demonstration of ACI’s commitment to its community. The money will go to benefit the Whittier Police Officer’s Association, which supports families of police officers and provides funding for community initiatives in Whittier, and the Keith Boyer Memorial Scholarship Fund, a charity devoted to providing funding for local high school students pursuing an education in music. (Boyer was a lifelong musician.) Other highlights of the evening came from the unveiling of new aircraft. During the RFQ process in 2016, ACI Jet President and Founder William “Bill” Borgsmiller promised that if they won the bid, ACI Jet would bring new aircraft to John Wayne Airport, helping boost fuel sales and the local tax base in Orange County. In a dramatic moment, he pointed to a brand-new G650 parked nearby
“[this] demonstrates what can come out of an education partnership between our schools and the aviation community.” and noted, “It’s not just important to keep one’s promises, it’s our culture.” The aircraft is part of ACI Jet’s charter fleet and according to ACI Jet, with special soundproofing and custom interior, it is the quietest G650 in existence. Added Borgsmiller, “The aircraft opens up destinations out of Santa Ana previously unreachable.” Another recent demonstration of ACI’s relationship with its community happened when two local sixth graders met on a field trip to the FBO. Young Gavin and Jake both had family ties to the aviation industry —one is the son of a manager at the FBO, the other the grandson of an aviation entrepreneur and operator of a Falcon 900 — and they bonded over their love of aircraft. Soon the two children began to negotiate a deal to get the Falcon 900 moved from Long Beach to John Wayne. Soon the negotiations kicked up,
and the parents became involved (yet through the entire remained devoted to honoring the boys’ deal points). Before you knew it, ACI Jet was holding a signing ceremony honoring the impending arrival of the Falcon at ACI Jet. “It’s inspiring and instructive,” says Former Second-District Orange County Supervisor Jim Silva, “it demonstrates what can come out of an education partnership between our schools and the aviation community.” The Falcon 900 joins ACI’s rapidly growing fleet of new based tenants at SNA which includes the aforementioned G650, two G550s, a Bombardier Challenger 604, and a third G550 on the way. ACI Jet estimates that some $150M has been added to the Orange County tax roll in the last four months alone. Now that’s why we love this incredible FBO. ACIJet.com ISSUE 4 . 2017

MERLE WOOD & ASSOCIATES Inviting You to Luxury Yacht Ownership
MERLE WOOD
KNOWS YACHTS. This fact is evidenced by a client list that reads like a “Who’s Who” of the world’s most highly successful individuals. Raised by a yacht broker father, Wood lived on a boat for several years as a child and sold his first one at 18 years old. Since launching his company in 1988, Merle Wood & Associates has surpassed expectations, amassing well over $30 billion in yacht deals to date, and has been a top global deal-producing yacht brokerage company for over 25 years. Leading a team of astute sales professionals, CEO Wood is a master of expertly navigating the yachting industry. His philosophy is simple: “It is important to sell a yacht knowing the client is going to be happy with it, so that he or she will return to me to sell what they have and purchase their next boat from me — and, equally important,
recommend Merle Wood & Associates to their friends.” Wood learned two important adages at a young age from two very influential clients that are at the foundation of his philosophy and focus: “The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten,” and, “It’s not what it costs to buy, but what it costs to sell that establishes true cost.” Wood uses these two philosophies to guide each client to the very best yacht for their personal requirements. Merle Wood largely attributes his company’s great success to the strength of the client relationships he and his team work to establish and maintain, which result in substantial repeat and referral business. “Give us a call,” he says. “Our yachts are showcased in ports all around the world, and many will be on display in yacht shows throughout the year.”
