Great travel destinations abound in this issue, and I know you’ll love the special section we’ve compiled on the world’s greatest escapes, featuring astonishing properties in Italy, Thailand, Mexico, California, New Zealand and Lord Howe Island in Australia. And for all the oenophiles who love Bordeaux wines, you will enjoy our fascinating look at the Bordeaux tourism business, which is part of an $18.5 billion dollar global industry. With Valentine’s Day looming just around the corner, we’ll do everything we can to make it a memorable holiday for all who partake, and I can assure you that every item in our Valentine’s Day Gift Guide will make you very popular in the eyes of your significant other. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with finding the perfect gift for yourself, either, which is what our 2013 Luxury Car Preview section is designed to do. Every year, Jetset previews the latest dream cars designed by the international luxury car makers. After watching the new model trends being introduced at the 2012 Paris Mondial de L’Automobile Show last fall, we believe 2013 is going to be an exceptional vintage for luxury cars. We’ll show you nearly 50 of them in this section, and, in the process, prepare you for Barrett-Jackson 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona, which is just around the corner. Our esteemed and accomplished world-renowned contributing writers have all contributed fabulous pieces in this issue, and we’re excited to introduce a new writer, Scott Walchek, who is the CEO and Founder of Trov. Robert Kiyosaki has penned a fascinating story which highlights the telltale signs that someone might have an addiction to money. It’s all here for you to enjoy in the coming pages, without question, the biggest and best issue of Jetset Magazine to date. Please enjoy it all, and as you embark on all your endeavors both professional and personal in 2013, let me be one of the first to raise a glass of Château Mouton Rothschild Bordeaux and join you in a toast (with whatever your personal favorite spirit, wine or champagne may be) to say, “Cheers, to a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year to all of us.” Enjoy the issue!

hen the founder of a world renowned shipyard retires and commissions a yacht to be designed for the private use of his family, you know the results are going to be extraordinary. That’s exactly what happened when Frans Heesen, former owner and founder of the Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts, commissioned the eighth vessel in Heesen’s award-winning 47 meter class of yachts. The resulting masterpiece, MY Lady Petra, was christened in April. Mr. and Mrs. Heesen appointed Bannenberg & Rowell to design the interiors of their new yacht. “Designing a yacht for someone who has built his shipyard into an industry-leading force is an honor and, at the same

With a cruising range of more than 4,000 miles, Lady Petra has the largest possible volume while remaining under the 500 GT threshold. The design created by Omega Architects features spacious decks on three levels, a full-beam media lounge, and a luxurious master suite that occupies the entire aft half of the upper deck. Multiple guest cabins offer the Heesens plenty of space to take their numerous grandchildren along as they sail into a well-deserved retirement.

When it is time to dine, you are in extremely capable hands. In 2012, Eden Rock partnered with world-renowned culinary icon Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Their two restaurants on the property, On the Rocks and the Sand Bar, are a “must try” for anyone visiting St. Barths. Jean-Georges’ new menus feature French cooking ϐ Ǥ Ǧ garden grows organic herbs and tomatoes, and everything that can be created from scratch is done so each and every morning. Sand Bar, the more casual of the two, offers a delectable array ǡ ϐ Ǧ Ǥ ϐ one of my favorites, as was the St. Barths Lobster Salad which was enjoyed more than once with a crisp glass of Chardonnay. The more sophisticated On-The-Rocks Restaurant is an extremely romantic and soulful spot highlighting Jean-Georges at Ǥ ǡ ϐ establishment was a delightful place to gently let the night slip away, while indulging in extraordinary dishes, paired with elegant selections from the well-endowed wine list. If you are seeking the absolute pinnacle of opulence, choose one of the two estates the hotel added in 2009: Villa Nina (with an inhouse art gallery) and Villa Rockstar. I opted for Villa Rockstar and was easily won over by what is quite possibly the most extraordinary beach house in the Caribbean. Of particular interest to many, the villa is home to a fullyequipped recording studio, including amongst its gear, the actual 1973 Neve Music Recording Console used by John Lennon to record his timeless ballad “Imagine.” This is an absolute wonderland for family or friends and has been used as a relaxing creative enclave for the likes of Kenny Chesney, who recently used Villa Rockstar to ϐ Ǥ

After exploring a nice selection of the eclectic shops lining the streets of St. Jean, I decided to head over to Hôtel Le Toiny and experience Restaurant Le Gaïac. STAY: THE ST. REGIS ROME Italy’s extremely photogenic capital city of Rome has been called the world’s largest open-air museum, and it’s easy to see why. As visitors stroll along the city’s beautiful piazzas and past centuriesold architectural masterpieces, they are immersed in history at every turn. St. Peter’s Square and the Colosseum are just two prime examples. One of the most popular stops for visitors is the legendary Trevi Fountain, which dates back to 1762 and has starred in movies such as La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday. According to tradition, visitors who toss a coin into the fountain are guaranteed to return. If you do toss in a coin, you very well might want to return for the shopping. The area surrounding the famous Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna is home to some of Rome’s most prestigious boutiques, including Fendi, Prada, Valentino and Gucci. Of course, no description of Rome would be complete without paying tribute to the city’s tempting cuisine.

n a way, it hardly seems fair that a country that measures only about 1,000 miles long and 250 miles wide should be able to keep so much spectacular scenery to itself. But then again, it’s all the more reason to visit this unbelievably photogenic country. If New Zealand isn’t already on your “must visit” list, it should be. First, the basics. New Zealand encompasses two main islands that are named, simply enough, North Island and South Island. Auckland, the country’s largest city, is located on North Island and serves as the gatewwway for international travelers. Getting there is easy via non-stop service from Los Angeles and San Francisco on Air New Zealand. The airline’s Business Premier class promises “the ǡdz Ǧϐ beds equipped with memory foam mattresses, duvets and full-size pillows. hoosing the best time of year to visit New Zealand really depends on what you want to do when you get there. If skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports are on your agenda, then June through August is the time to go, since the seasons in New Zealand are the opposite of those in the U.S. That also means that when you tire of the winter weather back home, you can enjoy summer in New Zealand any time from December through February. North Island Auckland offers all of the world class dining, designer shops and luxury accommodations you’d expect from a large city. Known as the “City of Sails,â€? it is also a mecca for water-based activities, ‹Â?…Ž—†‹Â?‰ Šƒ”„‘” …”—‹•‡•ǥ Ď?‹•Š‹Â?‰ Â…ÂŠÂƒÂ”Â–Â‡Â”Â•ÇĄ ƒÂ?† ™ŠƒŽ‡ ƒÂ?† †‘Ž’Š‹Â? watching excursions. Auckland’s Viaduct Harbor is also the home port for Explore NZ’s America’s Cup Sailing Experience. It offers a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a crew member on an authentic America’s Cup yacht. If you prefer a land-based tour,

you can ride in style as Bularangi Motorbikes takes you to see the sights of Auckland — on the back of a chauffeur-driven Harley. And if that’s not enough of an adrenaline rush, you can go base jumping off of the observation deck of Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower. With SkyJump, you’ll be tethered by a wire, and after a breathtaking 11 second fall at about 50 mph, you’ll land in the Sky City Plaza, having earned your bragging rights. —•– ƒ ͜͡njÂ?‹Â?—–‡ Ď?Ž‹‰Š– ÂƒÂ™ÂƒÂ›ÇĄ ‘–‘”—ƒ ‹• ƒ •…‡Â?‹… ”‡‰‹‘Â? When one person like Madoff loses their fortune, there’s another person who has just made their fortune moving into his home.“ The Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antiques Show is the place to be for many dealers because it’s where their clients spend President’s Day Weekend. This year, they’ll be privy to the “Hope Designer Showcase,” curated by Scott Snyder. They’re important partners for all kinds of dealers in the Palm Beach art market. It’s Diament who transmitted the story, told to him by a dealer, about the client racing to the show to meet her designer. When they connected, the designer was holding swatches and excitedly led her to a booth. Animatedly — hands waving and pointing to the swatches — she said to the eager dealer standing besides a large, colorful painting, “Look how perfectly this painting matches. A LOVE AFFAIR

WITH LAND

Wise Investments Can Yield Benefits for Generations BY SHAWN M. SMITH

T

he desire to own land has captivated many, and is insatiable in some. I’m a land lover, and along with my family proudly call 1,296 acres of Vermont’s Green Mountains my home. I have a profound love for our land, which I admit began as infatuation. My passion for land inspired me to design a land-centric career, one that facilitated my interest in helping clients achieve thoughtful and intelligent land use and conservation decisions. After 15 years, I’ve come to believe that there are two questions even the most romantic landowner must eventually consider: “What is in the best interest of my property?” and “What is in the best interest of my wealth portfolio?” The moment I realized that my family’s land had a role to play in its own welfare and protection is the moment that my love affair with it began in earnest, and a whole new world of ownership ideas rose to the surface. Indeed, the challenges inherent in balancing ϐ measure have, as I’ve witnessed, stimulated a surprising level of creativity that has proven to yield the best outcome for land and wealth security. One important lesson learned is that for landscapes with productive histories or possibilities, their productivity is optimized when stewarded under management strategies that pro-

mote on-site as well as cultural resilience. If the things a land asset produces possess two key attributes — desirability by a worldwide market, and longevity — then its future well-being and value are virtually guaranteed regardless of shorter-term ϐ Ǥ My family is creating a design and management model for our two square miles of Vermont hill farm wilderness. We’re drawing on our combined 30 years of experience in agriculture and conservation planning to practice a type of regenerative land use that harnesses our property’s valuable nutrient and water attributes, mitigates and leverages incipient climatic changes, and produces commodities that enhance human well-being. The conservation element of our model is equally future-thinking, allowing for agricultural practices that can withstand the changes inherent in evolution, and by doing so guaranteeing that the value integrity of our land is timeless. Beyond the romantic reasons for owning land, why is land a smart investment? For one thing, unlike other investments, land is completely within its owner’s control. Being in control is far more appealing than being at the mercy of volatile market dynamics and money managers’ decisions. One can do things ϐ ǡ

manage it smartly. Land is also a smart investment because it’s a tangible asset that will hold its value, even appreciate over time. And, land can be enjoyed throughout one’s ownership. It is a place to build memories with family and friends. Many believe that in periods of national or international economic uncertainty, it’s best to hold on to one’s money. Predicting the Future Start by Studying the Present BY KEN MCELROY

D

emographic changes in the United States and elsewhere have major implications for all investment risks and returns. This is certainly no secret. The more information about demographics such as population, employment and age that business and investment decision makers can appropriately group together, the more valuable the data will be to them. For example, the combination of ever-declining birth rates and the ever-increasing numbers of pensioners could have disastrous consequences for pensions and wealth creation. Therefore, any business or investment should be constructed with rapidly and substantially aging populations in mind. Demographic trends are facts, and what we all need for these future uncertain times are facts that can lead to more certainty. It’s not really that hard to predict that the U.S. and the world is growing in age if you look at a chart that shows live births and just follow the numbers. This information is readily available all over the Internet, yet most don’t pay any attention. What I personally like about studying demographics is that I can reasonably predict the future outcomes of many businesses, economies and investments. There is still a bit of chance involved for sure, but if you know that in 1957 there were over 4.3 million births in the U.S., you can easily fast forward to 2017 and know that the ones that did not die will be 60 years old. That’s what I mean by certainty.

If you can match your businesses and investments to accommodate that group of people, well, then, you can look like a genius. Most 60 year-olds want the same types of things, so invest in those things. Simple. It’s your job to make sure your investment advisors are doing this. It’s also your job to know this information so you can discuss these things intelligently. If you knew that in periods of recession and high unemployment that college enrollment skyrocketed, would this information be valuable to you? No jobs on the horizon means that people will stay in or go back to school. It’s certainly better than living at your parent’s house, and if you can get a student loan to pay for it, then why wouldn’t you? Most did.

Issue 1 . 2013

CRUISING ALTITUDE ESTATES

In every recession, student enrollment increases, so it should be no surprise that demand for student loans would increase, college tuition increases and demand for student housing would also increase, which would drive up prices and rents. It’s a simple supply and demand issue. Today, student debt tops $1 trillion. It’s the highest ever and it’s not just weighing down the 37 million former students who owe it, but the whole economy. It’s higher than the $700 billion Americans owe in car loans and the more than $800 billion on our credit cards. Across all households, the average outstanding college debt has increased to $26,682. This is very important information. Entire industries can emerge when trends like this develop. If you knew that the government was printing money, which is commonly called quantitative easing, could this information be ϐ ǫ ǡ Ǥ If you follow the news, you would know that the U.S. government announced in September 2012 that they are increasing the money supply by at least 40 billion per month by purchasing bonds. It’s called QE3. More money in circulation, like QE1 and QE2, drives down the dollar value, increases bank savings and lowers interest Ǥ ϐ Ǥ that issue.

70

I

JetsetMag.com

What’s interesting is that in the announcement of QE3 in September, the Fed actually predicted a lower valued currency over time. As the amount of money in circulation in the economy increases, Ǥ ǫ liability to that bank because they have to pay you interest on your money. It is an expense to the bank when they deposit your money. This is why your bank charges you for your bank accounts. So here is my question. If this is not speculation, then why do ǫ you that your money will be worth less in the future, then why don’t ǫ Ǥ The goal of many central banks, publicly or not, is to devalue their currency to boost exports. This has happened time and time again over the course of history, as has the devaluation of every Ǥ ǡ ϐ ϐ ϐ and eventual collapse, of not only the currency, but of the economy ϐ ǡ Ǥ In 2011, the world’s population surpassed 7 billion. While the rate of population growth has slowed in most parts of the world, we still will increase by nearly 80 million people every year — the equivalent of adding another U.S. to the world every four years.

The number of people on the planet has doubled since 1960, and if current growth rates continue, the world’s population would hit between 9 and 11 billion by 2050, depending on who you ask. These are trends that economists cannot challenge. The world will have a different face very soon. But the population story is no longer about growth alone. It’s a story about slower growth, increasing decline, older people and more urban living. For development, it’s also about where each of those trends occurs, and how they affect each other. It may sound odd, but we are actually heading into a labor shortage. Despite a growing global population, the availability of skilled workers is actually shrinking, and no longer just in advanced, aging countries such as Japan and Italy. Now, some emerging markets, such as China and Russia, are also feeling a demographic pinch. This is only the beginning. A demographic split will soon arise between countries with younger skilled workers and those that face an aging, shrinking workforce. The war for talent will become increasingly acute in certain sectors, especially areas requiring high skill levels and more education. In the future, labor force demographics will shift profoundly. Your investments should follow these future trends. I was in Japan and Italy a couple of times this year and discovered that both of these countries already have more people

exiting the workforce than there are workers prepared to enter them. While in Europe, I also learned that in 2010, the European Žƒ„‘” Â?ƒ”Â?‡– Â?ƒ”Â?‡† –Š‡ Ď?‹”•– –‹Â?‡ –Šƒ– Â?‘”‡ ™‘”Â?‡”• ”‡–‹”‡† –ŠƒÂ? joined the workforce. This trend is expected to surge to 8.3 million by 2030. By the end of this decade, other large economies such as Russia, Canada, South Korea and China will also have more people at retirement age than are entering the workforce. Young countries •–ƒÂ?† –‘ ’”‘Ď?‹– ˆ”‘Â? –Š‘•‡ –”‡Â?†•ǥ Ž‹Â?‡ Â?†‹ƒ ™Š‡”‡ ‘Â?‡nj–Š‹”† ‘ˆ –Š‡ population is now under the age of 15. History does offer us a storehouse of information about how people and societies behave, but it will not completely predict the future. Past information can be very useful, and if you keep observing these trends, you will be prepared to act on them if necessary. ‡Â?‘‰”ƒ’Š‹…• ƒ”‡ ƒŽ™ƒ›• ‹Â? Ď?Ž—šǥ ƒÂ?† •‘ ƒ”‡ –Š‡ ‹Â?˜‡•–Â?‡Â?– opportunities associated with them. If you want a competitive advantage in the future, then think about and study the changing demographics as they relate to your investments. For most people, their investments are something that can often be easily forgotten or dismissed as unimportant if they are not in direct view. Out of sight, out of mind. People live in the present. They plan for and worry about the future. By studying the future trends, you will see that the dots do connect the past, and that the past causes the present, and so the future.

CRUISING ALTITUDE TECHNOLOGY

t was not the breakfast meeting I’d expected. Living in the same Northern California community for many years, Dr. Jim Gemmell and I had become nearly-good friends. Every so often we’d grab a coffee to get caught up on our lives and latest endeavors, and we enjoyed a mutual appreciation for one another’s contributions to the universe of software technologies and the various innovations that our respective careers had spawned over the past two-and-a-half decades. While I am every bit a serial tech entrepreneur (read: caution-adverse, more intuitive than logical, surrounding myself with people more capable than I to pursue a 1-in-12 chance of building something sustainable), for sixteen years, Jim was one of Microsoft’s leading research scientists (read: genius software architect, disciplined and contemplative, more solitary than not, hard core coder). Working alongside tech legends like Dr. Gordon Bell (“the father of the mini-computer” and a principal researcher at Microsoft), he was extraordinarily productive developing a sizable body of research, publishing ϐ ǡ libraries and methodologies that are being used in consumer and business products, universities and computer labs throughout the world.

So, regardless of whether or not you wear a camera on your clothes or actively log your acquisitive life, one thing is certain: you are a data-producing machine, churning at a rate that has outpaced the average human’s ability to consume and manage it. In these pages I will explore some of the considerations for high net worth individuals living at the intersection of lifelogging, tangible wealth management and technology. each sat in a wheelchair and tried to enter a van, to truly get them to understand what a customer goes through. In fact, we had a timed competition to see who could enter and exit in the shortest time — a lot of fun, but a lot of learning, too. We even had them use their creativity to help name a new system that VMI had developed — some of the ideas were brilliant and some were more entertaining, but nonetheless, the employees were engaged. Each of the employees drove the raceway track for chills and thrills. But the culmination was most amazing. Doug told the employees that two special VIPs were invited to give a closing message. Most of the employees were sure it would be a local dignitary or perhaps a member of VMI’s board. Instead, the VIPs were two of their long-time customers who had bought eight vans between the two of them. As they rode their wheelchairs to the stage, the customers received a standing ovation from the employees; there were tears streaming from many. The two customers shared their life stories. Both of them had been healthy men in their 20s until fate intervened — one from a baseball injury, the other from polio. As the employees listened to the stories, they couldn’t help but realize they were not just building a van, they were making sure people like these two men were able to live their lives to the fullest, every day. In turn, Doug, reported later that the experience was not only galvanizing for the employees, but in turn, it created extraordinary momentum for the launch, resulting in exceeding their sales goals. We all need meaning in our lives. It’s great to be a parent or a spouse, but we spend as much or more time at our jobs as we do anything else. If we can provide meaning and purpose for our employees, we can take them from the “whys” to realizing that they are making a difference and they have value. Now, that’s a “wow.”

CRUISING ALTITUDE FINANCE KIYOSAKI: My addiction is food. I have struggled with an eating addiction all my life. I eat when I am bored, frustrated, tired, busy and not hungry. While I know the answer to my addiction is self-discipline, so far my addiction is much stronger than my discipline. I have tried therapists, doctors, prayer and diet clinics, but up to this point my addiction is winning. I have not yet given up . . . but my food addiction is very strong. I have started many diets at breakfast and have fallen off the diet “wagon” by lunch. I am glad I can admit I have an addiction and take action. If I did not face my addiction, I know I would either be dead or a grotesque, 600-pound blimp. LANNONS: That’s because our bodies are designed to be addicted. It’s true: Our cells become addicted to (or crave) any chemical that is repeatedly released or put into our bodies. The brain seeks out the relationship to settle the craving of the body — a cup of coffee, food, candy, beer, sex, prescription drug, drama, excuses, fast cars, the next deal, money, whatever . . . In states of pain, boredom, stress, excitement, pleasure, etc., every cell in our bodies has a heightened sensitivity to chemical messengers that are released into the blood from the brain. These chemicals are so powerful that they set off a biochemical reaction that actually changes the nucleus (known as the control center) of the cell.

And let’s not forget the Zimbabwe dollar. Today it takes 100 trillion Zim dollars to buy an egg. A few years ago, Zimbabwe was known as Rhodesia, the “Breadbasket of Africa.” Today it is the basket case of Africa. That is the price of corrupt leaders, corrupt bankers and corrupt money. Sound familiar? Again, as Paul Harvey said, “In times like these, it helps to remember that there have always been times like these.” THE RICH DON’T WORK FOR MONEY KIYOSAKI: I was fortunate to have been spared from the addiction to money. LANNONS: When a child does well on a test, they get a gold star or a smiley face. The child feels good getting the reward, and certain chemicals are released into the body. In school, this process is repeated over and over, creating the biochemical addiction. Fast forward through life, and the reward is no longer a smiley face; it’s now the paycheck. VISIONARY LEADERS UNLEASHING THE POWER OF HUMAN POTENTIAL

ost individuals do not give themselves permission to clearly awaken and fully realize their grand inner vision. Nor do they allow themselves to be creatively inspired and masterfully driven to be able to lead their great causes to fruition, which in turn and in time could change the course of human history. Most individuals do not mentally prepare themselves for releasing to the world their profound inner missions, nor do they bring their great contributions to specialists who could assist them in bringing their endeavors of serving the greater world about. Most individuals simply subordinate themselves ϐ deep inside. And most individuals feel more comfortable following the herd than being the shepherd. They live behind in the safety and security of the known instead of taking the heat and pot shots upfront and creating a new or previously unknown way. Few individuals give themselves permission to do something extraordinary on planet Earth. Few individuals allow their inner talents to emerge and direct their own unique and visionary ways. Few individuals are willing to be unborrowed seers and blaze new trails with ingenious innovations and initiate creative new ventures. Few individuals ϐ are envious or jealous and then go on to pursue and pioneer their most adventurous new ways. True leaders are individuals with clear and insightful visions, who see the potential opportunities where others withdraw because of challenging uncertainties. True leaders are the individuals who see brightness ǡ ϐ ǡ transformations where others feel stagnation and even horror. What makes these few who are willing to stand out so high and empowered amongst the crowds of the wandering and lowly disarrayed?

These unborrowed visionaries are the individuals who have grown because of their responsibilities, strengthened because of their challenges and arisen because of their grasped opportunities. They are the individuals who know their highest values, live by their highest aspirations and serve with their mightiest talents. They are leaders who have embraced their own pairs of opposites that they have been forced to face along their way. It was just a place I had dreamed of going to. But I’ve kind of made my way to adjusting pretty well in 10 years. I had a contract situation come up and had to decide where I was going to play, and I just thought, I really became a man here. Since the day I got drafted, this city has opened their arms for me and anything that I’ve been through, they’ve been supportive of. It doesn’t hurt that it’s always sunny and it feels warm always down here. I can’t do the cold. Jetset: It is so rare that a sports star like yourself can have the opportunity to call one place home for their career. Peyton Manning didn’t do it. Shaq didn’t do it. Michael Jordan couldn’t do it. Magic Johnson did, and Kobe Bryant probably will, but how does it feel that you had the opportunity to put the Miami Heat on the map and make them a legitimate and championship •’‘”–• ˆ”ƒÂ?…Š‹•‡Ǎ DW: Well, knock on wood on that one. How important is style and do you pick ›‘—” ‘™Â? ™ƒ”†”‘„‡ ƒÂ?† †‘ ›‘—” ‘™Â? •Š‘’’‹Â?‰Ǎ DW: I’m not a shopper at all. I’ve got a great team. That made me look at him and say, ‘That’s how you go to work. That’s how you present yourself.’ So when I got older, I understood that the way I leave the house is the impression I leave on my kids. The Chicago Bulls were in our blood. Michael Jordan was a big role model for me on and off the court. He was such a sharp-dressed person. He handled himself so well in front of the camera. There’s just something about when you get to New York because when they turn off the lights and the court goes dark, it’s going to be like a movie. It’s like a show, a showcase, where you know this is where so many greats have been, on this stage. There’s nothing like playing in New York. Jetset: Are there some places in South Florida you can go where people leave you alone and you can have a nice dinner without distractions? DW: I’ve been here 10 years, so I’ve been to most places and people always treat me with an incredible amount of respect, but I’m at the time in my life where I like to be home a lot. I like to eat at home with my personal chef and take care of my body. Jetset: You are one of the most socially responsible pro athletes. hen families in Hong Kong, a region of seven million people, sit down for an evening meal, odds are that Banyon Wong has had a hand in providing food that’s put on the table. Wong is managing director of Wilson International Frozen Foods, one of Hong Kong’s leading importers and distributors of frozen meats, poultry products, seafood, processed foods, dairy products and beverages. Founded in 1977, Wilson International Frozen Foods offers a complete range of food for sale throughout Hong Kong, Macau and China. While the leading conglomerate has afforded Wong a good life with a healthy share of wealth and success, he admittedly comes from humble beginnings. “When I was just a young boy, times were tough in Hong Kong,â€? Wong remembers. “Everyone was poor, which meant that my parents were poor. The late 50s and 60s in Hong Kong were similar to the Great Depression in the United States during the 30s: We shared clothing with our siblings to the point where holes began to appear on them. There were times where there wasn’t any food to eat at all. Everyone had to struggle through life back in those days. “Working in my father’s butcher shop when I was young gave me the inspiration to start Wilson Foods,â€? he continues. “Everyone wanted a good decent meal if they could afford one. Back then, in terms of quality, Hong Kong’s foods were not good at all and whether rich or poor, everyone needed to eat. As I was growing up, I wanted to bring quality foods to people in Hong Kong so that everyone could have a good meal, and that is how Wilson Foods was born.â€? While the company has grown tremendously over 35 years, it has also had its share of lean times when it was affected by economic and social changes.â€?The company once came close to bankruptcy, especially during Hong ‘Â?‰ǯ• ”‡…‡••‹‘Â? ’‡”‹‘†ǥdz ‘Â?‰ •ƒ›•Ǥ Dz – –Šƒ– –‹Â?‡ǥ ‡˜‡”›‘Â?‡ •—ˆˆ‡”‡† Ď?‹Â?ƒÂ?…‹ƒŽŽ›Ǥ However, perhaps the heaviest blow this company has ever suffered was during the SARS epidemic period in 2003. of recreational activities. We live in a place with a moderate climate, and as a result, we experience fantastic weather. Hong Kong is like China’s New York City, the big apple of China. It’s a very liberal and multicultural city, there are no natural disasters and transportation is easy and affordable. Furthermore, technology, culture and business is thriving in Hong Kong. Therefore, to be able to live in Hong Kong would already be considered lucky. Hong Kong is a fully capitalized city to which people do their best to work hard and prosper each and every day.” Wong says he has never had a problem achieving balance in his life. When he’s not at work, he likes to spend time with his family and he rejuvenates himself by participating in a number of sporting activities. “I go out to sea on my boat on a weekly basis, as well as play a range of other sports like golf and tennis,” he explains. “I play sports mainly to maintain good health these days, plus golf helps me attain a sense of serenity, a sense of inner peace if you will. It also helps me with my strategy skills and enhances my calm and focus — an exercise to sharpen my mind. Tennis helps me improve the physical aspect of myself, helping me maintain my agility. As for going out to sea, that allows me to be closer with nature, which I love doing.” While Wong is intricately involved in providing food to his fellow citizens in Hong Kong, it is those who provided his own sustenance as a child that he admires the most and to whom he credits his success. “It has been my parents who have been my biggest inspiration,” he says. “Struggling through poverty, they never wavered. They just kept going every day so that they could put food on the table and take good care of the family. They were role models to me while I was growing up. They gave me the strong will and endurance to do what I do today. It makes things easier for me when I face a challenge, because whatever challenge I encounter today is nothing compared to the hardships that they had to endure.”

When asked if he could imagine any other kind of life had he not made the choices that he did, Wong decidedly says he can’t. However, from his station today, he is able to offer generous advice to others who might be putting their own dreams into action. “Always remember to have a direction in life, a path that you would like to walk on and be persistent on that path. Learn from your mistakes, learn from others and observe closely on the things you want to do in life more often, paying close attention to detail. Never give up or quit. “Also, never blame others for your own mistakes and be sure to own up to them if you make them,” he adds. “If not, you will begin to lose passion for the things you want to do in life. You also need to consider and predict how society will move and understand what they want and need and take a risk in that prediction. After all, risk is what business is all about.” Wong offered a few more insights.”Always remember to try not to make enemies. Also, if you ever get to the stage where you become a leader, you must always have an eye for talent so that you have the best working under you. In business, I believe a person does not need to win everything. Always leave a path open for others.” www.junziconsultants.com Joseph Manqueros is an independent Consultant, Fine Art Advisor and cofounder of Junzi Consultants. 2013 LUXURY AUTO PREVIEW BY EMMANUEL LUPE

E

very year, Jetset Magazine previews the latest dream cars designed and produced by the international luxury car makers. After watching the new model trends introduced at the 2012 Paris Mondial de L’Automobile show last fall, it is needless to say that 2013 will be an exceptional vintage for the luxury car segment. Nearly 50 vehicles debuted at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show ǡ ϐ experiencing its best annual sales rate since 2008, and this positive growth could clearly be seen in the number of debuts. The show

featured world debuts ranging from electric vehicles to performance and luxury designs from a global array of the world’s top automakers. The Show also played host to the highly anticipated North American debut of the Jaguar F-TYPE convertible sports car and the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, the Bentley Continental GT Speed, the new Aston Martin Vanquish and DB9 and the world debut of the new Porsche Cayman. Other high-end manufacturers like Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bugatti were not at the show this year, but they, too, recently unveiled new outstanding models featured in this 2013 luxury auto preview issue.

ASTON MARTIN DB9 The introduction of the 2013 model year DB9 gives the British luxury sports car maker the perfect opportunity to further enrich the appeal of its mainstay in the GT sector. The exterior design of the DB9 communicates a powerfully assertive yet elegant character. The surfaces display taut lines and subtle muscular forms that point to the underlying power of this renowned Sports GT. DB9 sits low and wide, visually “planting” the car on the road, communicating a clearly athletic stance. The car’s inherent width is accentuated by the “light catcher” feature, which runs from the lower front bumper and continues along the sill of the car, creating

a chiseled, determined look. A large lower front grille feeds air into the Carbon Ceramic Braking system while the front splitter also serves to visually widen the car. The new 510bhp 6.0-liter V12 takes some of the “Gen4” VH architecture hardware technology developed for Aston Martin’s forthcoming new super GT, the Vanquish, but has been tuned to suit the character of DB9. The result is an engine with effortless torque of up to 457lb.ft (620 Nm) and acceleration from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds with a speed of 183 mph. Inside, as out, the revised DB9 becomes yet more elegant and more luxurious. Unmistakably Aston Martin, the Sports GT’s opulently-appointed interior boasts authentic materials and the highest levels of attention to detail.

CRUISING ALTITUDE AUTO PREVIEW

2014 PORSCHE CAYMAN Porsche celebrated the world premiere of the new Cayman at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The third generation of the Cayman, which made its appearance before an international audience at the LA Convention Center, has been reengineered from the ground up.

ǡ ǡ ϐ powerful than ever. The two-seat sport coupe will be launched on the market in two versions: Cayman and Cayman S. A longer wheelbase, wider track and larger wheels enhance the driving performance of the mid-engine sports car to a level without equal in its competitive class. Delivering more power with even better fuel economy than ǡ ϐ ϐ Ǧ

The Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter engine with 275 hp; with the Sport Chrono package, it accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The 3.4-liter engine in the Cayman S produces 325 hp; with PDK and the Sport Chrono package, it sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The new Cayman will arrive at dealerships in Spring 2013.

2013 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPE For the ultimate in open-air opulence, look no further than the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. It combines old-fashioned elements like a hand-built interior with a fully modern power plant and the latest conveniences to create a truly unique convertible. This Rolls is capable of wafting its way from 0 to 60 mph in less than six seconds, thanks to a massive 6.75-liter V12. The mill puts out 453 horsepower and an impressive 531 pound-feet of torque. Sending all that power to the rear wheels is an eight-speed automatic, which is a new addition for the latest model year. While decidedly elegant, the Drophead Coupe’s oversized proportions give it a bit of a nautical feel. This appearance can be enhanced by an optional teak rear deck that looks like it was pulled

straight from a luxury yacht. Up front, a modern version of RollsRoyce’s traditional grille is inset in a fascia that was redesigned for the latest model year with rectangular LED running lights. A notable feature is a split trunk lid Rolls-Royce calls a picnic boot. It allows the vertical lid to which the license plate mounts to swing down, much like a pickup truck’s tailgate, while the horizontal lid is conventionally hinged. With wall-to-wall leather upholstery, ϐ ǡ is as coddling as one would expect. The driver faces a large, thinrimmed three-spoke steering wheel and a trio of simple, oldfashioned analog gauges, while rear-seat passengers are treated to an impressive amount of space.

CRUISING ALTITUDE FUEL

Unmistakably an Aston Martin, the design shows a clear and coherent lineage from its heritage while providing an equally clear pointer to the luxury car brand’s vibrant future. Closer inspection reveals details such as the stunning new Aero Duct on the rear boot lid. This elegantly devised passive engineering feature, which counteracts lift at the car’s rear when traveling at speed, is a triumph of both design and technical ability. Performance, presence, style and great British craftsmanship — the new Vanquish has all these traits in abundance. Vanquish is the ultimate expression of Aston Martin design ethos, engineering innovation and technical ability. It offers luxurious, continentcrossing capability and pure driving excitement without compromise. Bearing the same name as the iconic AM V12 Vanquish that did so much to cement Aston Martin’s reputation as a maker of great GT cars in the modern era, the car once again puts this great British brand at the top of its class. As happy on the streets of a bustling city as it is carving through the countryside or doing long distance motorway touring, the Vanquish offers a thoroughbred British luxury sports car that’s also suited to everyday use. ϐ ǡ 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine mated to the proven Touchtronic 2 sixspeed automatic gearbox, the Vanquish offers suitably impressive ϐ Ǥ ͳʹǯ ͷ͸ͷ ȋͷ͹͵

AWARD-WINNING LUXURY DESIGN When Anita Lang talks about design, she literally glows. A beautiful smile illuminates her entire being, and her passion radiates out. To anyone watching, it is clear that her natural talent and her daily work are in complete harmony. Anita Lang’s enthusiasm for creating uplifting and inspiring design has been the driving force in her career. She founded IMI Design, an upscale, full-service interior design studio in 1992 to serve her clients in their quests for the ultimate luxury and comfort. According to Anita, life should be full of nothing but spectacular. “There is no room for mediocrity in design, she says. In describing her work, Anita Lang becomes just as animated when she points out what she loves as when she talks about what upsets her. “I cannot stand a wasted opportunity, she says passionately. “In life and in design, every moment, every experience and every space should be used to its absolute fullest. Only then can we see and participate in its true potential and greatness. Lang and her team at IMI Design constantly stand up for their clients’ dreams, no matter how impossible they seem. With a sparkle in her eye, Anita Lang adds: “Just because something has not been done before does not mean it cannot be done. One simply does not say “no to Anita.

“Though totally dependent upon nature for line, gesture and coloration, it is worth noting the relationship between Ron Kent’s work and abstract painting,â€? says writer/curator Kevin Wallace. “The expanse of Kent’s bowls and his platters take full advantage of the natural formations that are often quite similar to the canvases of the abstract expressionists. In the case of Kent’s work, however, there is also line and form, which has been largely dictated by the natural abstraction found in a particular piece of timber.â€? Making his home in Hawaii since the 1970s, Kent has built upon a tradition of the islands that has involved the creation of koa wood bowls for generations. But it was Kent, along with fellow artists Dan Deluz and Jack Striata, that elevated it to a new art form and transformed the pieces from functional to ornamental. The decorative aspects of his work caught the eye of Architectural Digest when it selected him to participate in its annual Home Design Show in New York in 2008. At 81, Kent has never stopped pushing the boundaries of his medium, even as he has inspired others to try and replicate his work’s translucent properties. While his signature pieces are often claimed from pieces of Norfolk Island pine, he has tackled other materials, from bonded and pressurized marine plywood to copper and other metals. Using plywood that is stacked and glued until it reaches heights of seven or eight feet, Kent has created what he calls The Guardians series, monolithic sculptures that hark back to his early bottle shapes and weigh up to 160 pounds. When the Four Seasons Maui Resort at Wailea underwent a $50 million renovation a few years ago, Kent was one of 60 different Hawaiian artists whose works were selected to represent the state’s history from statehood to the present. “I glue a dozen or so together, and then hand-shape them,â€? Kent has said of the plywood pieces. “What I love is the personality that develops in HDFK RQH 6RPH DUH PRUH IRUFHIXO RWKHUV UHÂżQHG ´ Whether working with plywood or the remnant of a once living tree, the artist lets inherent shapes and grains guide him in his aesthetic. “My mission is to create and select the silhouette that best interacts with the natural characteristics of each log, highlighting the intrinsic beauties that nature had provided, seeking a harmonious blend,â€? Kent once said of his approach to integrating form and the wood’s natural beauty.

his work has landed in the hands of Presidents, Crowned heads and even his Holiness Pope John Paul II.

MARKETPLACE ART Along the way, Kent has kept his collectors and critics scratching their heads as he played with ideas of deconstructing the vessel, as he did with his Post-Nuclear Series, purposely cutting into his sacrosanct bowls then stitching them back together with pieces of patinated copper, pig gut and other materials. In his Pele Series, named for the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano, the grain and pattern of a wooden bowl is covered with heavy, dark acrylic paint on the outside, while the interior blazes in shades of red, yellow and orange that might be seen inside the cone of a volcano. Taking his experimentation with the medium one step further, the artist has even created an Apocalyptic 6HULHV ZRUNLQJ ZLWK ZRRG WKDW KDV EHHQ FRQVXPHG E\ ÀDPHV WKDW FUHDWH texture and patterns, which are further worked with a wire brush. Kent’s manipulation of his chosen medium continues to evolve, and in the process, fascinates the viewer into seeing something at once primordial and postmodern — more than just another piece of wood. A

timeless British icon, yours to own forever ... This is a rare opportunity to own an immaculately restored Tudor Crown London red telephone kiosk, converted into a bespoke and unique humidor worthy of the finest cigar aficionado. Introduced to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V, the K6 telephone kiosk has become a symbol of Great Britannia. Not to be confused with its 1952 successor, the King Edward Crown edition, the rarer 1935 Tudor Crown phone kiosk is a classic piece of the British Empire. Following the privatization of British Telecom in the

mid 1980s, the K6 kiosks were decommissioned due to high maintenance costs and removed for scrap metal. Fortunately, 2,000 booths were declared “protected buildings” and preserved in place. Some high-profile celebrities have acted quickly to secure their own pieces of British history by purchasing a K6 kiosk — owners include Elton John, Dudley Moore, Tom Jones, Piers Morgan and Madonna. The interior of the humidor will be crafted from the finest Spanish cedar to the buyer’s specifications, and will include box storage units, individual cigar trays, a self-contained water tank and digital control unit.

To make an offer on this collector’s item, please contact Samuel Terry:
