DISCOVERING SELF-LOVE
TO LOSE OVER 40KG Name: Jerri Herbet Age: 26 Local Club: Jetts Miranda
We first caught up with Jerri in 2013 to chat about her amazing transformation. Since then she’s lost another 10kg and completed her Cert III in Fitness. Jerri spoke to us about her journey so far, how her large social media following has helped her and what’s next for this inspirational member.
“WITHOUT A DOUBT MY MOTIVATION IS MY PERSONAL TRAINER JOEL TESORIERO.”
Describe your life before you started your health and fitness journey. I was like every other teenager; going out, partying with friends and enjoying myself. But when I looked in the mirror I hated what I saw looking back at me. It damaged my self-esteem and there were a lot of dark days that I rarely told anyone about. When I got tired of hating myself, I knew it was time to change my perspective. I needed to begin to love myself. How different do you feel now compared to then? On a scale of 1-10, definitely a strong 11! I feel so much healthier and happier! Back then the smiles were fake and now they are genuine! Since joining Jetts I have lost 42kg and I’ll never look back. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and I enjoy my training. What has been the most rewarding part of your transformation? Being a healthier person and making better decisions about my life. I’ve also met my best friend Adam through my transformation process. He’s one of the personal trainers and has supported me the whole way – he’s amazing! My transformation has also changed my career path as I’m now studying to become a personal trainer. Why Jetts? What do you love about your local club? Where do I even begin? The minute you walk in to Jetts Miranda you’re greeted with a smile and a ‘hello’ – without fail – from all staff and members. I love that you get treated as a person rather than just another number. I love the support from every personal trainer, regardless of whether you’re their client or not. They are always willing to help and give you advice. It’s an amazing place to be. Who is your motivation? This is an easy one! Without a doubt my motivation is my personal trainer Joel Tesoriero, who is also the club manager. Joel goes above and beyond his role to make sure I get my desired results. Not once has he ever let me down. He’s a tough trainer but I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. He’s the backbone of Jetts Miranda and I couldn’t begin to thank him enough.

What is the number one lesson you’ve learned about health and fitness through your training? Not to give up. Failure is not final unless you give up. I’ve learnt to pick myself up and keep going as you never know who you might be inspiring! What do you wish you knew about health and fitness when you first started? I wish I knew how enjoyable it could be. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore - make it fun and mix it up. Have you had any obstacles to overcome on your journey? My biggest obstacle is the thoughts in my own head, I just try to spin every situation in a positive way and it gets me through the tough times. You have quite a following on Instagram, has this helped motivate you? Yes! I have had a lot of people follow me on my fitness journey and they always have plenty of positive things to say. People also tell me I’ve motivated them to start their own fitness journey - it’s a great feeling!

Have you had any bullies on social media? How has this affected you? I think anyone with a large following on social media faces bullies from time to time. It’s so easy for someone to sit behind a computer and be a keyboard warrior. Just recently I did a 30-day shred program and when I posted my results I got a lot of negative comments, and they weren’t even about my progress! The experience only made me stronger and more determined to do my best and not worry about what other people say. The positive always outweighs the negative.
TRAINING PLAN MONDAY AM: PT – mainly resistance PM: Cardio – treadmill and bike; abs – crunches, sit-ups and Russian twists TUESDAY Cardio – treadmill and rower; legs – squats, lunges and leg press.
What advice can you give others that want to change their life? Always believe in yourself – you can do this! Your body can withstand almost anything you put it through – it’s your mind you need to convince! What’s the most important thing people need to remember when they start training? It’s not going to be easy, but it will be worth it. I promise you that you’ll look back and be glad you started.

LIVING THE DREAM with business owner Matt Price Jetts Club: Ferny Grove, QLD Tell us about yourself. I have been working in the fitness industry since 2007. I love playing sports and I’m trying AFL next season. I have recently become a Jetts business owner after spending four years in the network as a personal trainer and manager of various clubs. Like most Australians I enjoy watching the footy, socialising with my mates and relaxing on the weekends. How did you hear about Jetts? What made you want to get involved in the business? I was a foundation member at Jetts Ferny Grove and was using the club about five times a week. I became a personal trainer at Jetts four years ago thanks to my wife’s brightly coloured shoes. The manager approached us and commented on the shoes and we started talking and he offered me the opportunity to come on board as a PT. As time went on I worked my way up to assistant manager and then club manager at Kallangur. Whilst working there Jetts Ferny Grove came on the market and thought I would take the next step up as a business owner. What do you love about the Jetts network? I love the people, the members and the atmosphere. It’s great that we have the ability to talk directly to the senior team members at the national support office. It’s a great brand and a joy to come in to work every day. The network is so large and diverse and it’s great how many ideas are shared throughout the network to help improve Jetts as a whole. How does the Jetts model fit in with your lifestyle? Jetts offers flexibility and thanks to my amazing team of trainers I can rely on them to look after the club in the event I am unable to be present.

As it is a 24-hour club there is no need to have the club staffed for most of the weekend which allows me to enjoy my weekends and have a strong work-life balance. What is the most rewarding part of being a Jetts club owner? Knowing that I am directly inspiring people to improve themselves and their health. As an owner/operator I am on the front line every day and it gives me the opportunity to watch people change over time and reach their health and fitness goals whilst assisting them in the process. What has been the most challenging part of being a Jetts club owner and how did you overcome this? Before taking over I was very familiar with the operational side of Jetts; however, my understanding of the business side of things, including forecasting and bookkeeping was limited. I have been fortunate enough to have direct assistance with this from our business performance manager who taught me the basics. I am now looking at further formal education in this area. What is your most memorable moment since being a Jetts club owner? I have only been a Jetts club owner for a short period of time but it has been great to see the members being happy with the level of service we offer. The most memorable moment would have to be when
I walked into the club on the first day and was welcomed by nearly every member I met as well as being remembered by members who were still using the club from when I was a PT there. What advice would you give potential Jetts club owners? Everyone thinks a 24 gym will be successful even if you don’t put it any effort. With anything in life you only get out what you put in. If you are looking for a rewarding job or project and willing to work toward creating a strong business it is a very fun and enjoyable network to be a part of.

Tell us about yourself. I’m a bit of a sport fanatic; I grew up as a kid playing football and being involved in any other sport I could, plus supporting my AFL team the Adelaide Crows. I am also fortunate enough to be the current fitness director and rehabilitation coach of one of South Australia’s state netball squads, the Adelaide Cougars. When and why did you first get started in the health and fitness industry? I have always been involved in some form of sport along the way. After a couple of injury setbacks I decided to start my fitness qualifications in my final year of school in 2009. Helping others to achieve their goals has always been a passion of mine as well. There is nothing better than helping someone achieve their goals.
Why did you become a club manager?
How does the Jetts model fit in with your lifestyle?
I had been working with Jetts for over two years as a personal trainer when the opportunity came up. I thought I would see if I could take the step up and I haven’t looked back. There’s great support from upper management and business owners and I love being able to help members achieve their fitness goals on a daily basis. Working with such a highly energetic team of personal trainers means I always want to come to work.
It’s fantastic. Being a family gym I see most of mine on a daily basis when they come to work out. To be able to keep fit and work in a gym is amazing. I believe there is no other better job out there that has a work/ life balance like the Jetts’ model.
How did you hear about Jetts? What made you want to get involved in the business? I was finishing off my qualifications and Jetts had just opened their second club in South Australia around the corner so I thought I would go and have a look. I loved it from the get-go. The team and the gym were amazing. I did a bit of work experience and I pestered the owners and management. The day before my 18th birthday I received news that I had got the job with Jetts.
What keeps you motivated on those days when you just can’t be bothered getting out of bed? My members keep me motivated. I’m not only letting myself down if I don’t show up, I’m letting them down as well. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My grandfather said: “You might not agree with everything someone says to you but make sure you listen because there may be one thing that will improve yourself”.
What do you love about Jetts? I love having such an amazing team to work with. The club owner has provided fantastic opportunities for me to grow, not only as a person but within the company as well. I love that we can give members an opportunity to work out 24/7 and that our team is constantly on the floor and not hidden away in offices. What is your greatest achievement since being a part of the Jetts network? I was nominated for South Australian PT of the year in 2011 and in 2013. I was awarded South Australian Manager of the Year and our club received South Australian Club of the Year. I know I still have lots to learn so I’m sure my greatest achievement is yet to come.
