Opening

You have already been asked to identify a starting point relating to a form of pleasure seeking related to the British seaside and an extreme equivalent of that pleasure. Our architectures will be extreme versions of the conditions that we encounter in Blackpool. Each student will describe their experience of Blackpool, and the pleasure they are becoming interested in, in the form of a souvenir. The souvenir will become the anchor point for a narrative about Blackpool, and the pursuit of pleasure, unique to the student: “...we need and desire souvenirs of events that are reportable, events whose materiality has escaped us, events that thereby exist only through the invention of narrative.� - Stewart 1993 The souvenir can be constructed out of a range of materials and media. It has only two physical requisites: it must be small enough to fit in the hand, and it must be beautifully and precisely constructed. Other than this, it must describe through narrative a particular pleasure pursuit and its relationship to Blackpool. This narrative can be partly invented, inspired by the town but not necessarily an honest reflection of it.

Development

Following the reviews, students will develop their souvenirs, narratives and pleasure modes into architectural propositions located along the Blackpool seaside. Appropriate sites and scales of operation will be reached depending on the earlier stage of each project. At this stage the projects will be translated into a series of drawings carefully constructed from studies of the souvenir and collage image and their relation to Blackpool. Students will produce three A2 portrait axonometric drawings. These will situate and spatialise the earlier study. These drawings will be re-translated into a detailed architectural model that describes the form of the new structure and begins to show the programmatic arrangement of its elements, as well as describing the context of Blackpool. The models should feel part-way between the earlier souvenir and more typical architectural scale models.

Elaboration

Following the development reviews students will begin to make detailed architectural drawings of their proposals. At this point the programme along with an internal organisational strategy will be defined through highly worked architectural plans and sections. The atmosphere and impact of the proposal will be explored through carefully constructed internal and external collages. Particular attention should be paid to the drama of the proposals function when constructing the internal view, and conversely the impact of the proposal on the site must be carefully visualised.

Consolidation

In the consolidation phase students will elaborate on and compose the key drawings, images and models that describes their project in the most compelling way possible. The Easter review should be seen as a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the final crit taking place a week later, this will give you a chance to consolidate and resolve any project issues. Students will be asked at this point to show a re-worked version of their original panels from the pre-Easter review in conjunction with new panels describing the technical study. Following the final crit we will review the entire body of work at individual tutorials, at this point students should also bring a plan of how they would like to exhibit their work for the final exhibition assessment. The tutorial will also focus on the requirements for the portfolio submission.

FL_ACTUATE BEACH HUT

Fl_actuate is a small project situated on the edge of minimalist architecture and art installation. Conceived as a physical representation of the seaside experience, it asks the question of whether a prerequisite is required to establish a meaningful connection with the natural environment. As an extension of native landscape, it provides functionality in the form of the shelter from elements. Further function can be introduced through user interaction and adaptation of what is essentially a free-standing timber framework.

OBJECT LIGHT TREE

Light Tree is a product design project which came to life as a result of experimentation with parametric tools and practices. Initial concept stemmed from the process itself, in the course of working with and researching complex data arrays representing 3D geometry. Final product materialised as a decorative light fitting with a careful consideration of permittivity and translucency of it’s individual elements.

Data / Stream

Created from a combination of three algorithms, it gives an opportunity to alter the form, transparency, and perforation types resulting an infinite number of unique iterations.

24H COMPETITION

This project was conceived and fully developed in the course of 24 hours as a competition entry. The response is a 10x10x10m cube (competition requirement), a pop up experimental structure in London aiming to provide a shape shifting space suited for both work (day) and leisure (night). Internally, it offers a single continuous layout switching between the start up incubator (day) and performance space (night). Dynamic faรงades blend the building into the natural environment while creating a framework for natural inhabitation.
