THE J-BOAT ERA
IN THE BEGINNING... The Universal Rule for racing sailboats was originally proposed in 1905 by Nathanael G. Herreshoff and was officially adopted for the J-Class Boats in the 1930 Cup Series. The rule was created to allow headto-head match racing thus eliminating handicaps or time allowances for each competing yacht. Needless to say, the Universal Rule had much influence on America’s Cup competitions as well as yacht racing in general since 1930. The J-Class Period also saw significant developments in sails. In 1930, Enterprise, Weetamoe, Yankee as well as Whirlwind had triple head rigs. L. Francis Herreshoff, Whirlwind’s designer, had great foresight to design a rig that could use triple, double and single head rigs. Beginning with Shamrock V, built in 1930, ten J-Boats were built to the Universal Rule and nine of those became the Cup class for the 1930, 1934, and 1937 matches. Velsheda, was the only J-Boat never to sail in trial races or a Cup series. Resolute and Vanitie, the two rivals for the defending berth in the 1920 Cup match, were converted and re-commissioned as J-Boats. Harold Vanderbilt dominated the entire J-Class era by winning all three defenses in the 1930’s, although T.O.M. Sopwith did give him a run for his money in 1934 with the very fast Endeavor.
THE GLOBAL CHALLENGE
THE RETURN OF J-CLASS RACING The seven J-Class yachts in service today set a standard of excellence in the world of yachting that has not been seen since 30’s. Now, 80 years later, today’s yachting aficionados have re-energized the class and there are seven J-Class Yachts racing today and three more in the build process. Today’s owners will begin racing these thoroughbreds again with a crew of thirty on each boat in Newport, RI in June 2011. The site of the last international J-Class America’s Cup in 1937. In a five match series, a minimum of three J-Class yachts will vie for the Yachting Cup and accrue the first points for the Global Challenge Trophy to be awarded at the finale regatta at the Isle of Wight in July of 2012. Yacht Racing as it was meant to be is back where it belongs. Because of the size and nature of the boats, cable television contracts are in place to cover the events from beginning to end. We also anticipate dramatic press in marine and non-marine publications alike because of the amazing stature of the yachts.
THE REGATTAS
EACH REGATTA WILL SHOWCASE A MINIMUM OF THREE J-CLASS YACHTS We anticipate an on-water audience in Newport of 800 to 1200 boats per day. The private viewing area and race village will draw an additional 1000 spectators per day. In the United Kingdom, the three events in the Olympic summer of 2012 will draw at least 20,000 spectators per race with 50,000 expected for the final regatta. We invite you to use these exciting events to stimulate and grow your business in the most efficient and elegant way possible.
