WELCOME TO CHAI LIFE WITH TREMENDOUS PRIDE AND GRATITUDE Nearly two years ago, I stood before you at the 2014 Federation Annual Meeting and spoke about a “new era of possibilities” for our community. Now that my term as Chair is coming to a close, I am proud to report that we have made tremendous progress toward an “era of possibilities fulfilled.” Our Annual Campaign and Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation are on solid fiscal ground and growing. We continue to expand our safety net and forge new community partnerships, including many exciting synergies with local synagogues. Our “crown jewel” of a campus – the largest of its kind in the country – has seen the opening of the Sinai Residences of Boca Raton after eight years of hard work and planning, and the construction of the new Yeshiva High School is well underway. Federation has engaged a new cadre of bright young leaders, poised to take our community forward, and we have created what I called new “portals of entry” designed to attract a new generation of participants as our community continues to mature. There is a sense of excitement that is reminiscent of our early days nearly four decades ago when I joined with other founders of our Federation to set out on a mission now being fulfilled in ways we never imagined. In light of the many accomplishments of our community, I want to take this opportunity to thank our lay leadership for their time and talents in supporting our vital mission as well as the commitment and dedication of our exceptional Federation staff at all levels. Our partnership of lay and professional leadership is truly extraordinary and we would not be where we are today without all of you. But, if our history has taught us anything, there is always more work to be done. I look forward to continuing my involvement after I pass the gavel on to Anne Jacobson, our Chair Designate, who will take the helm in April with yet even more possibilities on the horizon. I thank each and every one of you who make up this incredibly vibrant and diverse community of ours for the opportunity to have served as Chair of the Federation during these exciting times. May we go from strength to strength,

YOUR IMPACT NOW A young mother in Boca Raton loses her husband, but gains a community... A young man afraid to wear his kippah in Paris starts a new life in Israel… A bedridden senior in Tblisi, Georgia looks at her welfare worker as her “angel.”

These are just a few of the faces and places impacted by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and its local, national and international agency partners. Whether they are around the corner or around the globe, our Federation is committed to taking care of our Jewish family in need. In these pages are six Stories of Hope – lives nurtured, protected, taught, inspired, saved and comforted with the help of Federation, its beneficiary agencies and generous donors.

For 15 years, Sarah enjoyed a “lovely, beautiful” life as a stay-at-home mom in Boca Raton, raising two boys and money for many local organizations. Five years ago, everything changed.

Dana doesn’t mince words when it comes to the financial assistance she received to keep her three girls in Donna Klein Jewish Academy after she went through several traumatic family events five years ago.

When Reuben finished his studies in Economics and Business in his native Paris, France, he opened a kosher Japanese-Chinese restaurant that was tailored to French customers.

SARAH: THE GIFT OF SELF-RESPECT

“My husband lost his job and I discovered major financial issues that had been happening for many, many years,” Sarah recalled. “He had no income. Our home went into foreclosure and the bills began to pile up. At that time, he became very verbally abusive,” she added. “I did everything in my power to meet the needs of my children, but it was getting harder and harder.” Sarah received therapy from the Counseling and Mental Health Services program of Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS), a beneficiary agency of Federation, and was eventually connected with an abuse counselor. JFS also helped Sarah’s sons attend summer camp and helped her sell and move from her home. Sarah can’t thank JFS and the Jewish Federation enough.

“I am so grateful for what they have done for me and my family,” she says. “My self-respect is back, and that, in itself, is quite a gift.” CHAILIFE 8

“The school literally saved our lives,” said Dana. Six weeks before she had her third daughter, Emma, Dana lost her mom. Her father had passed away a year earlier. Four weeks after Emma was born, Dana and her husband separated. Dana says DKJA, a beneficiary of Federation, has provided a stable environment for Samantha, 15, Rebekah, 11, and Emma, 5. In addition to being straight A students, all three have developed a strong Jewish identity. “Samantha went on the eighth grade trip to Israel and played in Maccabi for two summers. Rebekah is studying for her Bat Mitzvah and Emma is already speaking Hebrew,” says Dana, adding that the Levis JCC helped financially with Maccabi. “I am forever indebted to this community,” says Dana, who volunteers at DKJA regularly in an effort to give back.

“I hid the fact that I wear a kippah,” he recalls. “I felt safe enough to wear it only in my restaurant. I’d dreamed of aliyah all my life and the recent tragic events there made me realize it’s time.” After the attack at the Hyper Cacher [kosher market], where Jews were murdered in a place he used to shop, Reuben realized he needed to leave. “It could have happened to me, or someone in my family, and it was really frightening,” he recollects. With the help of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Reuben made Aliyah and is now studying Hebrew. “My dream is to open my own restaurant here in Jerusalem, where I can live, learn Torah, and work,” he says happily.

“I left behind Paris, but I wake up every morning happy, in Israel, knowing that I am safe and free to practice my Judaism without fear.”

COMFORT

In November 2011, Marci and Mark were busy young parents whose lives revolved around their kids. Then the unexpected happened; Mark suddenly passed away.

With a sick husband and no relatives nearby, life can get pretty lonely for Bella, a local Holocaust survivor. Thanks to a Federation-supported program, she is receiving extra care and support.

Larisa, 87, of Tblisi, Georgia, has lived in the same tiny dilapidated apartment since she was one-and-a-half years old, hoping someday she would live in normal conditions.

During this tragic time, Marci and her family fell back on the local community, including Federation and the Betty & Marvin Zale Early Childhood Learning Center of the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC, where the boys attended school. “I had an incredible outpouring of love and support,” recalls Marci, who was able to keep the boys in school, where they continued to receive the Jewish education she felt was so important.

“The community was there for me and my family and still is,” she says. Four years later, Marci’s family continues to receive summer camp scholarships to the Marleen Forkas Summer Camps of the Levis JCC. “I am so grateful that Federation raises funds to help families like mine,” says Marci, who volunteers on the Camp Committee. “As hard as it is to imagine what I’ve been through, it is also amazing to be the recipient of such an outpouring of community support.”

Building on the life-changing power of the March of the Living, From March to Miriam (FMTM) is matching survivors with students and adult March alumni. The program’s name recalls when Moses asked Miriam and the women to cross the Red Sea and the Israelites felt a sense of hopefulness, similar to the feeling FMTM teams give to survivors. Evan Wadler, 19, a West Boca High graduate who participated in the March last year, is teamed with “big sister” Francine Hande to comfort and check in on Bella. Evan says their visits and calls “make Bella feel like she has

someone she can count on.”

Francine, a 1996 student March alum, explains, “A lot of people underestimate how families and grandkids can help keep a person young. With no family here, Bella especially thrives on interaction with younger people. Our contacts once or twice a week energize her, make her happy—and that’s the whole purpose.”

A LIFE OF DIGNITY

Unfortunately, that day never came, but help did in the form of the Hesed Eliahu Welfare Center, operated by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) with funding from our Federation. Since 2002, Hesed has been a lifeline to Larisa, providing food, home care, medication, home repairs and winter relief. Most importantly, she receives a visit from a welfare worker seven days a week to relieve her loneliness. She affectionately refers to her as her “angel,” says Larry Feldman, Federation Campaign Chair, who visited Larissa on a recent mission to Tblisi and Israel. “I asked her, ‘If your angel was not here, if we were not able to provide what we do, where do you think you would be today?’” he said.

“She looked at us and she said quite clearly, ‘I don’t think I would have survived.’”

In Memoriam

Larry Phillips:

An Unpar alleled Legacy Upon moving to Boca Raton in 1993, Larry Phillips (z”l) immediately became a driving philanthropic force in our Federation community. With his passing on September 11, 2015, he has left an unparalleled legacy as one of Federation’s most significant donors as well as by endowing considerable gifts for the future of our Jewish community and our people. Among his acts of generosity that surround us, Larry spearheaded the effort to “burn” Federation’s Siemens Campus mortgage, named the Larry and Roxane Phillips Gymnasium at the Levis JCC, and helped launch our Jewish Women’s Foundation and the JFS Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center for seniors. Committed to the Jewish future, he also made possible the second Wexner Heritage Program class to prepare local leaders, supported Birthright and PJ Library®, sustained an orphanage in the Former Soviet Union and established a scholarship fund at Donna Klein Jewish Academy Hands-on, Larry took great joy in founding the sumptuous Annual Thanksgiving Banquet at Federation for primarily senior local residents unable to afford or prepare a festive meal. He served them with honor as he did in making deliveries for the Food Pantry. A member of Federation’s Ketubah Society and the national Star of David Society, Larry was also a beacon to many through his leadership roles with the Federation, Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, and the St. Andrews campaign. A champion among heroes, Larry’s unsurpassed efforts and contributions earned him the Federation’s Jim Nobil Community Leadership Award. Our Jewish community is and will remain immeasurably stronger, more benevolent and vibrant because he chose to call it home.

Toby Weinman Palchik: A Tr ailblazer in Life and Philanthropy

A consummate philanthropist, Toby Weinman Palchik (z”l) passed away on December 9, 2015, having proudly supported Jewish causes for 60 years. Deeply concerned with our people’s well-being and security, she was a member of our Federation’s Ketubah Society as well as the national Star of David Society, ensuring that her vital contributions continue into the Jewish future about which she so deeply cared. Toby is best known here for naming our Federation’s Center for Jewish Philanthropy (CJP) in 2007 with a $1 million gift. When she cut the ribbon on this first-of-a-kind Jewish philanthropic center, she was in familiar pioneer territory. A half century earlier, she was the first woman to become an electrical contractor in New York, at which she was extremely successful. Her vision and generosity in creating the CJP enabled us to be at the cutting edge of philanthropy, bringing together all aspects of charitable giving under the trusted Federation name to help donors fulfill their philanthropic goals while meeting the vital needs of our Jewish community and our people now and in the future. Toby and her husband, Mel (z”l), took great pride in our community and supported many Jewish organizations. Jewish South Palm Beach County is forever better as a result of their having moved here full-time from Lawrence, New York in 1989.

Holocaust Survivors Hardly Surviving? It’s true. One in four Holocaust survivors worldwide lives below the poverty line. Federation knows this challenge well with one of the largest local populations of survivors in the country right here in our backyard. Our Federation funds vital services here and around the world through our international agency partners. Help make sure all Holocaust survivors and seniors age in comfort and dignity by making YOUR impact now with a gift to the 2016 UJA/Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Annual Campaign.

Longtime Federation donors and members of the King David and Ketubah Societies, the Wolks have called South Palm Beach County their home for about sixteen years. Initially “snowflakes,” they gradually moved here from Boston. “We had been active with the Federation (Combined Jewish Philanthropies/CJP) in Boston, but quickly became more engaged here through The Polo Club,” said Barbara. Their local philanthropy has also included naming the therapy waiting room at the JFS Weisman Delray Community Center. The Wolks trace their philanthropic roots to their childhood homes, where their parents instilled the responsibility of caring for Jews in need. “Among our earliest memories are the tin tzedakah cans of different colors,” said Ted. “We are so grateful to be able to do what we can now,” said Barbara. “It’s a blessing to our family to give back to our community and our people.”

“SINAI RESIDENCES IS A MOMENTOUS SYMBOL FOR THE ENTIRE JEWISH COMMUNITY,” SAID TED. “IT NOT ONLY PROVIDES STATE-OF-THE-ART SENIOR LIVING FOR ITS RESIDENTS, BUT ALSO ENABLES THE FEDERATION TO MEET MORE VITAL NEEDS OF OUR NEIGHBORS AND OUR PEOPLE. Together they raised the ruach of our one-ofa-kind Jewish community to new levels. CAMPAIGN I am truly humbled by the opportunity to serve as your Campaign Chair and so proud to be part of an organization that does so much for so many. I often use the phrase “No gift goes farther” when talking about our Annual Campaign. If you want to explore the breadth and depth of Federation’s impact, all you have to do is set your GPS to our Federation campus, the largest of its kind in the U.S. at 100 acres.

It is with tremendous pride that I take up the mantle of Financial Resource Development Chair (FRD) at Federation. I have big shoes to fill, as the prior Chair, Annie Jacobson, did a terrific job. Fortunately for our Federation, Annie has moved on to become Chair Designate. Developing and expanding Federation’s financial portfolio is front and center to everything we do. We must continue to build our Annual Campaign to make an impact on those who need us today and further strengthen our Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) to make sure the Jewish institutions so many depend upon remain strong for generations to come. As we continue to grow and innovate, we also must promote new capital opportunities and initiatives to illustrate to donors that Federation is a worthwhile investment in our future. As past Chair of the Foundation and Vice Chair of Campaign, I look forward to broadening and strengthening the financial resources of our Federation and invite you to expand your portfolio as a stakeholder in this diverse and dynamic Jewish community that we call home. From strength to strength,

David Pratt Vice Chair, FRD

Our campus is home to a wide range of agencies, schools and services vital to sustaining and strengthening Jewish life every day in our community. Nearly 1,400 children learn here, close to 300 seniors live here and 100-plus developmentally disabled adults receive vocational training and other social services here. Federation’s caring reach also extends well beyond our campus to help feed, comfort, teach and protect our Jewish family in need throughout South Palm Beach County, in Israel and more than 70 countries around the world. There couldn’t be a better center-point than our Federation campus to see your dollars in action. I personally invite you to take a tour to see all the good that we do in our community – and beyond – and be part of our 2016 Federation Annual Campaign. Visit jewishboca.org to find out more.

FROM BROOKLYN TO BOCA

SUBWAY’S LARRY FELDMAN SERVES UP INSPIRATION AS FEDERATION’S CAMPAIGN CHAIR How did a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn rise to become a top entrepreneur and leading philanthropist in South Florida? Larry Feldman came from humble beginnings, but the seeds for success were planted early on, and he credits his family life and Jewish roots for helping him get there. “We were poor in terms of money, but we never knew that,” he recalled of his childhood in the projects. “My family life was deep and rich, with supportive parents who made sure we got a good education and taught us the value of tikkun olam – repairing the world. We understood what it was to give to others.” After graduating from law school, Feldman served in D.C. as Deputy Counsel to the House Banking Committee and, in 1977, purchased his first Subway franchise a few blocks from the House. After attending legal hearings, he worked at the sandwich counter, gradually making his way up the fledgling fast food chain. Today, Subway has 43,000 stores in 109 countries, and the company continues to grow, having reached its 50th anniversary. As CEO of Subway South Florida and Subway Development Corporation of Washington, DC, Feldman oversees franchises in those two regions, and also uses his business expertise to support many philanthropic endeavors. “Philanthropy is part of my DNA -- not in terms of dollars or money, but family values,” he said. “Now, I’m working on involving the younger donors so they can be on the giving side as well.” Feldman and his family were always active in charities on the financial side, and slowly began to do more as lay leaders. His wife, Diane, has been on the board of Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services – where they created the Feldman Family Diamond Club. “I became involved in day-to-day operations at Federation, and I’m so proud to be Annual Campaign Chair,” Feldman said. “As one of the largest Federations, we are a model for others, always striving to bring new and innovative approaches. I’m proud of who we are, and what we’ve done and continue to accomplish.” But Feldman views himself as more than a fundraiser. “I’m a storyteller,” he said. “It’s easy to tell these stories, after traveling on missions to see people who are being helped all over the world. I love visiting smaller Jewish communities and seeing how they’re thriving, thanks to Federation’s incredible array of programs. How blessed are we as a Jewish people to know that such an organization exists. And maybe you don’t need the services, but you know someone who does. I can’t imagine the world without Federation.” Reflecting on his legacy of giving, Feldman shared a profound insight: “Opening your heart in philanthropy will open your heart in business as well. Through giving, you get, and that’s a beautiful thing. Once you see the results of your giving, you want to give more. There is a deep feeling of satisfaction that comes from the joy of being able to help provide for others.”

Leadership Gifts Event

FORMER PRIME MINISTER EHUD BARAK KEYNOTES

An eagerly anticipated night of illumination, celebration and inspiration was in store for premier donors of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County at the Leadership Gifts Event on December 2. Nearly 150 distinguished members of the Federation’s Ketubah Society, Prime Minister’s Council and King David Society gathered at St. Andrews Country Club. The elegant evening began with warm reunions at a cocktail reception, surrounded by the Federation’s colorful Ketubah Society Hall of Fame banners. The reception was followed by dinner with an inspiring program keynoted by Ehud Barak, Former Prime Minister of Israel. “Not only do you support this community, you lead this community by example, standing with our Federation as our most dedicated contributors. Your commitment to improving the quality of life for fellow Jews is a powerful inspiration,” said Meryl Gallatin, who cochaired the night with her husband, Ron.

In welcoming Barak to the podium, Meryl Gallatin described him as, “a man who over a half-century career became Israel’s most decorated soldier and held the nation’s trifecta of top positions.” The former prime minister provided in-depth observations and analysis of an array of critical issues facing Israel and the world today, as well as his vision for Israel’s future. “I see Israel strong, self-confident, living in the lowest profile of animosity with neighbors, pushing itself to the cutting edge of human societies in science, technology, education, quality of life, acting in cooperation together with the Jewish diaspora on strengthening both of us,” Barak said. For more information about Major Gifts opportunities at the Federation, please contact Ida Novack at 561.852.3342 or idan@bocafed.org.

Ron raised the theme of investing in our community and our people through Federation, comparing Federation’s expertise and reputation with those of a highly trusted wealth manager with access to an array of other experts.

Sandler Family

Major Gifts Event An enthusiastic 350 of Federation’s top donors gathered at The Polo Club on January 6 to enjoy a cocktail reception, an elegant dinner, and riveting speakers at this season’s annual Sandler Family Major Gifts Event. Named for the consummate generosity and philanthropy of Phyllis & Harvey Sandler and their family, the evening celebrated Federation’s Major Donors, who contribute a minimum $10,000 to the local Annual Campaign. Co-chaired by Linda & Don Brodie, and Robin & Neil Baritz, the event’s camaraderie, compassion and commitment were palpable from the outset, and continued to build throughout the evening. The inclusion of major donors’ adult children and grandchildren through a new L’Dor V’Dor initiative added to the warmth and power of the event. Anne Jacobson, Chair Designate, welcomed Barbara & Ted Wolk, and Debra & Jerry Kramer to the prestigious ranks of Federation’s Ketubah Society, which recognizes donors who have cumulatively contributed $1 million or more to Federation. Larry Feldman, Campaign Chair, led a multimedia presentation conveying the transformational power of help and hope made possible through Federation. With poignancy, inspiration, humor and gratitude for support from the Jewish community, U.S. Humanitarian Aid worker Alan Gross shared his harrowing experience of five years in a Cuban prison, how he survived and was freed, and some life lessons learned. Gross was introduced by his cousin, a former Federation Board Chair and current Vice Chair, Etta Gross Zimmerman.

Following the program, a group of Federation’s younger major donors, our Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP), headed to a side room for an intimate “after party” with both speakers.

EXPLORING ART AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS Federation’s younger major donors, our Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP) enjoyed two outings to explore the area’s art offerings. Their season opener brought them to a private night at the Boca Raton Museum of Art with custom cocktails, where they heard from EJP Co-Chairs Michele & Larry Blair, EJP Campaign Chair Peter Wohlgemuth, Event Co-Chairs Ilana & Sami Dwek, and Dale & David Pratt. Another outing took EJP aboard a luxury party bus for a docent-led tour at Art Basel on Miami Beach where, over dinner, they discussed art, philanthropy and what being Jewish means to them. Following the Sandler Family Major Gifts Event, EJP members enjoyed “Drinks and Intimate Conversation” on the Middle East and Cuba with both event speakers, Ambassador Dennis Ross and Alan Gross.

What if a single gift could help feed local Jewish seniors with 17,000 hot meals every year? Build 5,000 bomb shelters to protect families in southern Israel? Inspire 2,000 individuals with special needs through local programs? One gift can do this and so much more through the 2016 Federation Annual Campaign. And, by giving today, you can also be part of “60 Days of Impact,” a rallying call to our entire Jewish community to come together like never before to make an impact on Jewish lives – every day, everywhere.

NFL ALL-PRO LEGEND JASON TAYLOR SCORES BIG AT MEN’S NIGHT OUT Men of all ages enthusiastically came together for Men’s Night Out on January 12 at Woodfield Country Club to hear four-time NFL All-Pro legend Jason Taylor share his journey from his roots to football to philanthropy. To start, Taylor posed for pictures and signed footballs at a VIP reception. At the main event, the men enjoyed gourmet food stations and an open bar. They were warmly welcomed by the evening’s CoChairs, Ken Lebersfeld and Robert Pick, and by Peter Wohlgemuth, who co-chairs the Men’s Division with Stu Ganslaw and Gary Rubin. With a moving multi-media presentation, Lebersfeld also shared the far-reaching impact of our Federation – locally, in Israel and throughout the world. Chuck Lichtman, Ira Holz and Greg Gefen spoke about upcoming activities, and ESPN Radio’s Josh Cohen served as energetic emcee. Taylor shared his Pittsburgh roots with his single mother, his early dreams of being a basketball player, his storied career in the NFL, most of which was spent with the Dolphins, the state of the game, and his approach to philanthropy, having grown up as a recipient. His Jason Taylor Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of children in South Florida. “When I was a kid on the receiving end, I didn’t really realize just how important it is to help,” he reflected. “But I wouldn’t be here today without that help, and I make sure to give back however I can. And it’s a blessing. We here tonight are all blessed to be able to make such a difference in so many lives.”

Lions T

Celebrate Power of Kindness with International Human Rights Activist

he Lion of Judah Luncheon drew nearly 400 women to The Polo Club on February 3, to enjoy an elegant lunch reception honoring their commitment to philanthropy. The theme of the afternoon was the power of kindness, which truly resonated with all the women as, with their Lion sisters they celebrated the impact of their generosity in helping those in need.

Guest speaker, human rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali, shared the incredible story of her courageous crusade to achieve basic rights after growing up as a Muslim in Somalia. She eventually fled to the Netherlands, serving as an elected member of the Dutch parliament and campaigning to raise awareness of violence against women. Today she is a fellow with the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Belfour Center for Science and International Affairs.

“This year’s Lion of Judah Luncheon celebrates more than 44 years of the Lion’s Pride,” said Robin Rubin, who co-chaired the event with Amy Ross, and Phyllis Sandler as Honorary Chair. “The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County boasts one of the largest groups of Lions in the country…44 years of spreading love and kindness throughout the community and our Jewish world.”

During the program, 54 new Lions of Judah were recognized, as well as 18 women who established new Lion of Judah Endowments. The luncheon also highlighted the Code of Kindness, a global project that strives to promote acts of kindness and spread them from one person to another. Each Lion received a kindness token, to continue to impact others through their philanthropy.

Through powerful video vignettes, the Lions learned about individuals locally and around the globe whose lives have been changed. “It’s great to see our dollars hard at work to support Jewish life and learning,” said Eydie Holz, Lion of Judah Vice Chair.

For more information about the Federation’s Lion of Judah program and other women’s activities, contact Susan Levine at 561.852.6034 or SusanL@bocafed.org.

WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY

ISRAEL ADVOCACY LEARNING OPENS WOMEN’S SEASON What can we do to combat the historical lies and double standards that Israel is subjected to in the media and on college campuses today? Linda Scherzer, former CNN Middle East correspondent, answered that question for more than 250 women of all ages at Women’s Education Day at The Polo Club on November 2.

campuses and the growing feelings of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism all around the world. She urged raising confident, empowered children who are prepared to defend Israel and with a strong sense of Jewish identity thanks to transformative experiences such as Birthright. The morning’s co-chairs, Janice Obuchowski and Karen Dern, warmly welcomed the crowd. Talia Lerner, President of Owls for Israel at FAU, shared her efforts in leading the growing pro-Israel contingent on campus.

Now the director of “Write on for Israel,” which trains top high school students to become defenders of Israel, Scherzer spoke about attempts to delegitimize Israel, the BDS (boycott, divest, sanction) movement on college

WOMEN OPEN A NEW CHAPTER TWO In September, the “class” of 2016 began to explore what’s next for them as Jewish women in Women’s Philanthropy’s second “Chapter Two” season. They’ve immersed themselves in monthly sessions and background reading, growing together as they learn about our community, our people, our philanthropic landscape and leadership roles. They’ve visited agencies, felt the power of personal stories, and explored issues from senior needs to preparing the next Jewish generation. Through a powerful mock allocations

exercise they experienced the difficult decisions required to apportion community dollars to the myriad vital programs and services provided by local and international agencies. Co-chaired again by Karen Dern and Janice Obuchowski, the next season will be led by “graduates” and program mentors, Alicia Spero and Teri Waitzer – and there’s already a waiting list! For more information, contact Susan Levine at 561-852-6034 or susanl@bocafed.org.

“Women’s Philanthropy is committed to providing for the growing, essential needs of our community and our people. Continually challenging ourselves to reach higher and do more, we place a high priority on our education at our Lion of Judah Luncheon, at our Lion Conferences, at Chapter Two and at every WP Board Meeting.” ~Judi Schuman, Women’s Philanthropy Chair CHAILIFE 34

YOUNG ADULT DIVISION (YAD)

YAD CARES – GIVING BACK TO CHILDREN IN NEED YAD’s evening of social action brought nearly 100 young Jewish adults and children to learn about Chai Lifeline, and create blankets, chemo care kits, “stained glass” dreidels, Chanukah bookmarks and menorahs to brighten the holiday season for clients of this organization that helps families experiencing serious pediatric illness.

YAD LEARNS –

More than 75 young Jewish professionals headed to the Boca Raton Museum of Art for Sunday brunch, an exclusive tour of the History Makes Memory Holocaust/WWII exhibit, a moving tribute to the human spirit and a reminder of the fundamental importance of freedom and tolerance. They also heard from Moti Farkas, a survivor of three labor camps and Dachau who became an IDF officer and fought in Israel’s War of Independence.

YOUNG ADULT DIVISION (YAD)

YAD CELEBRATES – RECORD-BREAKING BLUE & WHITE PARTY LIGHTS UP CHANUKAH ON THE AVE. Atlantic Avenue hotspot Honey was the place to be as more than 300 young adults came out to celebrate Chanukah at the Blue & White Party - the largest event in YAD History! The crowd enjoyed an amazing night with

a live DJ, dancing, food and socializing with old and new friends. They also donated over 250 toys to brighten the holiday for children served by JAFCO.

YAD CONNECTS – HAPPY HOURS Happy Hours throughout South Palm Beach County keep connecting hundreds of young Jewish adults through socializing, networking, and connecting to our community, our people and each other – at some of the area’s best spots. Just this season, they’ve gathered at Tap 42, Biergarten and Il Bacio. And while they’re connecting, they’ve learned about the Jewish community, heard from

young IDF soldiers, and collected toys for children at a Medical Center in Israel as well as food for the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS and gift cards for books at the Levis JCC’s Marleen Forkas Camp Kavod.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL DIVISION (B&P) FEDERATION NAMES BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL INDUSTRY ICON SERIES FOR LEWIS KATZ (Z”L) On December 16, the crowd gathered for the most recent Industry Icon event was deeply moved as Betty Kane announced the naming of the “Lewis Katz Industry Icon Series” for this preeminent icon of business and Jewish philanthropy, and her dear friend of more than 40 years.

NIGHT OF SMOOTH SAILING OPENS SEASON’S ICON SERIES B&P launched the latest season of its Industry Icon Series on October 15 at an evening with Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. After networking and socializing at a reception complete with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, B&P Chairs Kathy Green and Eric Lebersfeld, and Federation President & CEO Matt Levin welcomed the array of entrepreneurs and professionals, sharing the vital impact of Federation and our beneficiary agencies in the community. Fain captivated the crowd with stories of Royal Caribbean’s journey from beginning with just three ships to its current fleet of hundreds, as well as his own rise in the worlds of business and philanthropy.

A part-time local resident and a major donor to our Federation, Katz died in a plane crash just six months after headlining an Icon event. With an extraordinary career spanning the upper echelons of law, investment banking, business, sports and media, he also gained renown for changing the Jewish philanthropic landscape in New Jersey. Katz was becoming an important part of our community when he tragically passed away. Impressed with our Federation, he believed in the strength of our dynamic B&P Division to make a significant impact for the benefit of others as well as for its participants’ business and Jewish growth. When the Katz Foundation provided our Federation with a substantial gift in his memory, it seemed most fitting to apply it to the Industry Icon Series’ unique opportunities for learning and inspiration, where top industry leaders share their business acumen and philanthropic journeys from a close, personal perspective.

B&P HAPPY HOURS CONNECT FOR BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY B&P longtimers and newcomers enjoyed a great evening of networking and getting to know others who care about business as well as the community on September 9 at the

trendy Delray spot, Max’s Social House. More than 120 active Jewish professionals from a wide array of fields were on the move, meeting and making new connections.

WOMEN GO BUSINESS CASUAL WITH NETWORKING, FUN & LEARNING It’s always an incredible night of woman-powered networking at Business Casual, B&P’s annual series for busy entrepreneurs and professionals who want to make the most of their “time off” together. The inspiring Joanne Caras, author of the Holocaust Survivor Cookbook, kicked off their season at the Federation “In the Kitchen,” with dinner and powerful stories of women behind the recipes. “Improv Your Business” brought them to Center Stage Performing Arts in Boca Raton to practice their business and networking skills on stage – because in the business world, things can turn on a dime. Of course, they also enjoyed casual time with friends and contacts new and old over dinner and dessert. Next, on March 15, they’ll head to Barrel of Monks for a craft beer and wine tasting. Women are welcome to join one CHAILIFE 42

IMPACT TODAY. IMAGINE TOMORROW. 2015 Annual Report

VISION

Rooted in Jewish values, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County seeks to inspire and galvanize local residents and organizations to build and sustain a strong, caring, vibrant Jewish community for today and tomorrow.

MISSION

At the hub of the Jewish community, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County strategically engages donors, supporters and community partners in addressing and planning for current and future needs of the Jewish people locally, in Israel and around the world. The Federation accomplishes these goals by: building Jewish community and developing Jewish communal leadership; promoting Jewish identity, education and engagement; caring for the vulnerable; advocating for the well-being and security of the Jewish people and standing with Israel, their spiritual homeland.

IMPACT TODAY. IMAGINE TOMORROW. DEAR FEDERATION FAMILY: Impact Today. Imagine Tomorrow. It is our Federation’s call to action to care for our Jewish family in need today and build a strong and thriving Jewish community for tomorrow. We are proud to report that our Federation has not just aspired to the call this past year; we have answered it, with one of the strongest years of growth in our 37-year history. The 2015 fiscal year was unprecedented in terms of Financial Resource Development. Our Annual Campaign grew for the third year in a row by 7 percent to nearly $15 million with an increased number of donors at all levels. That means more people fed, comforted, educated and protected – locally, in Israel and throughout the world. And we are engaging more local, national and international agency partners in the process. The future looks brighter than ever as the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) continued to grow total assets from $75 million to almost $80 million and increase grants to the Annual Campaign from $1.1 million to $1.3 million. JJCF’s Create a Jewish Legacy program enjoyed tremendous success in its first year of participation in the Harold Grinspoon Foundation Life & Legacy initiative with more than 15 local institutions generating nearly $26 million in expectancies, far surpassing its initial goals. Adding to our expanding financial portfolio were three magnanimous gifts that will help strengthen our ability to serve the community at large and expand our reach to the unaffiliated – the largest unrestricted bequest ever made to the JJCF by the late Irving Eckhardt, the naming of the Ted and Barbara Wolk Spa and Fitness Center at the Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, and the launch of the Deborah and Larry D. Silver Center for Jewish Engagement (CJE). We are forever grateful to these generous donors for trusting Federation as a worthwhile investment in the future of our community. Eight years in the making, Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, a 23-acre state-of-the-art Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), opened its doors this past January. Federation’s largest capital project since the opening of our South Campus in 1991, Sinai will provide a significant income stream for the vital programs and services of our organization and its beneficiary agencies – for years to come. Our campus will also soon be home to the new Yeshiva High School facility, scheduled to open in January 2017. With another successful campaign in full stride, we are also proud to report that our Federation Divisions, Departments and Club Communities continue to grow and reach more local residents. And hundreds of people are touring our campus each year to discover the best-kept Jewish secret in Boca. As we look back, it is clear that our call to impact today and imagine tomorrow is no longer about hopes – it is about hopes fulfilled. And it is our sincere hope that you will join us to explore ways you can support and serve this vibrant and dynamic Jewish community of ours – and extend our caring reach even further to those we have yet to touch in ways we have never imagined. Warm Regards,

Albert W. Gortz Chair, Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Board of Directors

Richard Steinberg Chair, Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF)

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN Business & Professional Division (B&P). In its fourth year, a thriving B&P Division continued its successful Industry Icon events. The series was renamed The Lewis Katz Industry Icon Series in memory of this consummate icon. The B&P Cabinet increased to 61 members and grew “Business Casual,” its signature networking series for women. Country Club Communities and Neighborhoods. Committed leaders and volunteers once again showed their unwavering commitment. They educated and raised vital Annual Campaign funds from their friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Several clubs raised additional funds through the Adopt-a-Project program, and volunteered hands-on in mitzvah projects. Many also participated in and offered leadership development opportunities. Major Gifts. Our King David Society, Prime Minister’s Council, and Ketubah Society members were celebrated at our Leadership Gifts Event featuring Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. The Sandler Family Major Gifts Event featured U.S. Humanitarian Aid Worker Alan Gross, freed from Cuba, and Former Ambassador Dennis Ross, and welcomed adult children and grandchildren to the program through a new L’Dor V’Dor initiative. At the event, Debra & Jerry Kramer and Barbara & Ted Wolk were welcomed into the Ketubah Society, which received national JFNA “Fedovation” recognition as a successful, innovative program. Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP), enjoyed each other’s company at in-depth private receptions with top speakers, toured Art Basel in Miami as well as the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and enjoyed a Bruce Springsteen concert.

Men’s Division. The Men’s Division could not be more successful with sell-out events featuring sports celebrities to Middle East experts to fine whiskeys and cigars, and an expanding committee of engaged participants. Men of all ages are enjoying enriching experiences together while building a strong division of their own to benefit the world, educate others and create a brighter Jewish future. Women’s Philanthropy. With nearly 800 Lions of Judah, our pride is one of the largest in the country. Attendance at the annual Lion of Judah Luncheon neared 400. Women also heard speakers of substance at Education Day and the Pomegranate event. Chapter Two, a program designed for women seeking to connect with the community is completing its second year with great success, and there is a waiting list for the next class. There’s great energy in Women’s Philanthropy, with a place for everyone who wants to join in. Young Adult Division (YAD). Through YAD, young Jewish adults came together to mix, mingle and make a difference here at home, in Israel and around the world. They had a record-breaking Chanukah party, a phenomenal Comedy Night Live year-end event, helped package food for the needy, made holiday cards for IDF and American Jewish soldiers, tailgated and attended Dolphins games, heard IDF soldiers, helped Jewish children struggling with lifethreatening diseases, and packed local hot spots for happy hours with a philanthropic component. 60 Days of Impact. This initiative rallied the local Jewish community to GIVE, VOLUNTEER & GET ENGAGED like never before. More than 2,000 people contributed over $3 million dollars. Forty events culminated in Super Sunday, where more than 200 volunteers assembled over 20,000 kosher meal kits for those in need. More than 28,000 people were reached on Facebook, with numerous new Federation page likes. Highly successful, the initiative has headed into a second year.

JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Where Your Values Live On. Dedicated to growing permanent resources to secure a brighter future for our community, the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) now has assets approaching $80 million. During this past year, JJCF provided grants totaling almost $3.5 million to over 250 local, national and international organizations. More than $1.3 million in grants were distributed in support of our Federation’s Annual Campaign. Create a Jewish Legacy. Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) enjoyed tremendous success in its first year of participation in the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s LIFE & LEGACYTM initiative, a four-year partnership that features training, support and monetary incentives to help promote afterlifetime giving to benefit Jewish day schools, synagogues, social service organizations and other Jewish entities. Over the course of the year, teams from 15 Jewish organizations took part in five educational workshops, and every organization participating in LIFE & LEGACYTM benefitted from two in-depth consulting sessions with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. These efforts have resulted in 251 commitments from 206 donors to community organizations, with an estimated value of $26 million.

Professional Advisory Committee (PAC). Nearly 120 members strong, the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) plays a key role in the growth of the JJCF. PAC members have encouraged their clients to establish current and legacy charitable gifts through trusts, bequests, life insurance policies and donor advised funds, while maximizing networking and educational opportunities. Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF). As a forum for informed Jewish philanthropists and leaders, the Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF) raises and directly allocates their own funds to special programs for women and children. JWF celebrated its 13th anniversary and allocated to eleven projects locally and in Israel. During the past 12 years, JWF has granted nearly $1,000,000. Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE). During 2015, eighteen more women joined our Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) program. By becoming a LOJE, each woman ensures that a generous gift will be made to the Federation in her name, in perpetuity. With 289 women strong, our community continues to lead North America with the highest number of endowed “Lions Forever.”

Create a Jewish Legacy’s first year in the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s LIFE & LEGACYTM initiative resulted in 15 local synagogues, schools, agencies and organizations obtaining 251 commitments from 206 donors to community organizations, with an estimated value of $26 million.

PLANNING TO MEET NEEDS LOCALLY AND OVERSEAS Central to the well-being, growth and sustainability of our community is our Federation’s commitment to its historic role of convening the community in planning for the current and future needs of our Jewish neighbors and global family. Dedicated lay and professional leaders collaborate to address vital needs through careful funding of programs and services, developing revenue streams and partnerships,

and optimal use of our land and facilities. In the past year, our Federation structured, and is beginning to implement, a transformative, even more broad-based and strategic process of planning and determining both local and overseas allocations through the Committee for the Future and the Program Funding Council.

Planning & Allocations. P&A prioritizes and distributes funding to address current needs, and to sustain and enhance Jewish life for the future. Last year, P&A directed aid for local seniors, individuals with special needs, and Holocaust survivors; day school scholarships and innovative Jewish learning opportunities; outreach initiatives across the denominational spectrum; JCRC advocacy efforts and more. Israel & Overseas. Through our historic global partners, Federation touches thousands of those most vulnerable in our Jewish family worldwide. This past year, in the FSU, we fed the hungry and kept them warm, and funded Jewish Identity Summer Camps. In Israel, we helped Ethiopian-Israeli youth reach their potential and Haredi men enter the IDF and gain employment. We funded long-term Israel experiences for local youth, and strengthened relationships with our homeland through multiple exchange programs and our highly successful Spirit of Israel Community Mission.

FEDERATION PROGRAMS Engagement. Twenty-four lay leaders from local agencies and synagogues joined the second group of Federation’s Jewish Community Leadership Institute (JCLI), sharing intensive, expertled training sessions in preparation to further lead our Jewish community. Thanks to the couple’s great vision and generosity, Federation’s new Deborah and Larry D. Silver Center for Jewish Engagement (CJE) was launched. CJE’s Jewish Unity Day event, the largest in the nation, drew more than 500 people, and the second Night of Inspiration brought more than 600 to hear from nine women who lead our Jewish community. Jewish Community Relations Council. As Federation’s public policy, community relations and advocacy arm, the JCRC engaged in new and expanded programs to support the State of Israel and its people, and to encourage public officials’ support of aid to local social service agencies. JCRC advocated at the annual Legislative Sendoff and in the State Capitol, worked with nearby JCRCs in developing the Iran & Sudan Divestment Act, and created College Prep: Slice of Israel, for 200 high school students. More than 3,000 people and 39 Jewish organizations participated in IsraelFest 2015 at Mizner Park, and the interfaith March of Remembrance drew more than 700 to observe Yom HaShoah. Special Needs. Through generous support from the Naomi & Saul Meyers and Rose & Leon Barrows Endowment Fund, our Federation is supplementing existing special needs programming and has begun to convene an intensive planning process. After joining the Unicorn Foundation in conducting a special needs community survey, Federation is embarking on bringing together an array of stakeholders to assess the extent and efficacy of current services, determine and address gaps in coverage, and develop opportunities for collaboration. CHAILIFE 48

Birthright Israel Community Bus. Our third Birthright Israel community bus brought more than three dozen young, local Jewish adults to Israel for 10 days of exploring, learning and bonding. The 22- to 26-year-olds from South Palm Beach County were led by Federation professionals throughout their inspirational journey in our Jewish homeland. Once again, since their return, many Birthright travelers have become involved with our Jewish community. Department of Jewish Education. DJE’s School Educational Services convenes Professional Council meetings of all Day School Heads, Congregational School Education Directors and Early Childhood Directors, and offers an array of professional development programming for more than 500 teachers. Chesed Day once again brought more than 600 day school students to learn hands-on together on the Federation campus. Seventy students from South Palm Beach County traveled on the life-changing March of the Living, as did 39 adults on their own bus. From March to Miriam continues to create “families” of students and local adults with local Holocaust survivors to provide support to the survivors and enrichment to all. PJ Library®. More than 1,600 local families raising Jewish children have been receiving Jewish books for their youngsters through the PJ Library® - South Palm Beach County Partnership. This past year, more than 4,200 children, parents and grandparents enjoyed PJ Library activities around the community at over 55 venues. South Palm Beach County also became one of 34 pilot communities to launch PJ Our Way, the next chapter of PJ Library for children ages 9-11.

Federation Transportation Services (FTS). This past year, FTS provided 55,000 trips to over 300 seniors and clients with disabilities, who would otherwise not have free transportation to vital and life-sustaining activities. Their many destinations include doctors’ offices, grocery stores, pharmacies, hot meal sites, places of worship, and popular locations for a monthly field trip. FTS also transports Donna Klein Jewish Academy students to their homes and to offsite school activities, as well as Adolph and Rose Levis JCC campers to many activities.

Afraid to Wear a Jewish Star in Public? It’s true. From anti-Israel protests on U.S. college campuses to deadly acts against Jews in Europe, it is becoming increasingly difficult for many to express their Judaism freely. Our Federation supports advocacy programs in our local schools and addresses security needs world-wide. And when those in peril seek Aliyah, we are there. Help protect our Jewish family from persecution by making YOUR impact now with a gift to the 2016 UJA/Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Annual Campaign.

JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Ensuring a Sustainable Local Jewish Community There’s a lot of buzz about “local and sustainable” these days. That is, in fact, the mission of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation: ensuring a sustainable, local Jewish community by building permanent resources so that our Jewish community, here and in Israel, grows and thrives into the future. This past year, our assets under management climbed higher than ever, approaching $80 million dollars. Almost $ 3.5 million was granted to over 250 local, national and international organizations. In fact, over $1.3 million was distributed to support our Federation’s Annual Campaign. The success of our Create a Jewish Legacy initiative has been key toward ensuring our local community’s sustainability. This year alone, 206 donors committed to provide almost $26 million in legacy gifts to local Jewish organizations and synagogues in the future. Ultimately, our goal is a culture of endowed giving within each and every Jewish organization and synagogue so that “local and sustainable” becomes second nature.

Richard Steinberg, Chair

BUILDING LEGACIES ACROSS THE COMMUNITY JANE & ALAN CORNELL When Jane and Alan Cornell became immersed in Jewish life in their new home of Boca Raton twenty years ago, they arrived from New Jersey with a wealth of experience in Jewish leadership and philanthropy. Both children of Holocaust survivors, they have always shared a lifelong commitment to the Jewish people, traced to their families having to struggle to survive, start new lives, and give back. Jane’s grandfather escaped from Berlin to Palestine, then to New York where he began a small real estate business. As president of a synagogue, he used his personal property as collateral to obtain a mortgage for a much needed new building. Despite few resources, Alan’s parents contributed whatever they could; later the family left a legacy with Hadassah’s Cornell Family Gene Therapy Research Lab. Locally, the Cornells are King David Society members with service on the Federation Executive Committee and Board, boards of JJCF and JFS, the St. Andrews Country Club campaign and more. Jane is a Sapphire Lion of Judah. “Federation strengthens our Jewish community and gives people with similar values and passions a place to work together for common goals,” she says. “The heart and soul of our community, Federation reaches out to help our Jewish family here, in Israel and throughout the world.” To ensure that support for their beloved community and people will always be there, the Cornells have established their planned gift through our JJCF, including B’nai Torah Congregation, JFS and our Federation.

SUSAN & BARRY PODOLSKY Having met as teens at their Skokie youth group’s Mother’s Day Lox Box Fundraiser, it’s no surprise that Susan and Barry Podolsky are so dedicated to this Jewish community they’ve called their vibrant home since 1987. Already seasoned in Jewish leadership and aware of “the power to make a difference” here, they started out in YAD. Just two years later, Susan was directing the Russian Resettlement Program at JFS, eventually settling 60 families locally. A proud Lion of Judah, she went on to other leadership roles at JFS as well as at Temple Beth El, the couples’ synagogue home where they have shared “great joy, sorrow and strength” for almost 30 years, and where Barry now serves as President. A member of the first local Wexner Heritage class, at Federation Barry has raised funds, chaired B&P and Facilities Corp., served on the Executive Committee and Board as well as, for seven years, on the board that governs and oversees Sinai Residences, and more. Part of the Create a Jewish Legacy initiative, he encourages planned giving at the temple and hopes to serve as a role model. Committed to helping the programs and services to which they are dedicated today remain for those in need far into the future, the Podolskys have established legacy gifts for Temple Beth El, JFS and the Federation. “Imagine the impact if everyone left just 5% of their wealth to charity,” Barry says.

JJCF’S CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY BRINGS $26 MILLION IN COMMITMENTS FOR COMMUNITY IN TEN MONTHS

T

he Create a Jewish Legacy program at the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s LIFE & LEGACY™ initiative, has received almost $26 million in legacy commitments since the program officially started collecting declarations of intent in 2015. In the final quarter of the first year of what will be a four-year program, volunteer teams from 15 CJL organizations have secured 215 legacy commitments from 180 individual donors. Harold Grinspoon Foundation program officer Dena Kaufman told attendees at a recent event that South Palm Beach County’s $26 million in commitments to date has yielded the highest dollar amount of the 23 communities reporting from around the nation. LIFE & LEGACY™, which provides training, support and incentive grants to participating organizations, aims to assist communities in promoting afterlifetime giving to benefit local Jewish organizations. Since 2015, the Harold Grinspoon Foundation has led four educational events in South Palm Beach County. Upcoming programs include a session on formalizing legacy gifts on Tuesday, April 5, 8:30 am in Zinman Hall. A Community-Wide Celebration honoring legacy donors who have participated in the LIFE & LEGACY™ program is planned for Monday, May 23 at 6 pm in Zinman Hall.

PASSION FOR PHILANTHROPY: ELYSSA KUPFERBERG EARNS 2016 MITZVAH SOCIETY AWARD

E

lyssa Kupferberg knew something wasn’t right when she saw fewer than 10 family members from her father’s side at her Bat Mitzvah. “That was all that remained of his family from Poland. Everyone else was lost in the Holocaust. Fortunately, my father was able to escape to America on the last ship from Poland,” Elyssa recalls. “My first thought was, ‘How could this ever happen?’ My second thought was, ‘It can never happen again.’” This very personal story of survival was the first and perhaps most important lesson of a life that has since been driven by Elyssa’s signature mantra, “Find your passion.” That passion has propelled Elyssa to a highly successful 30-year career in banking and finance, a family life firmly grounded in Jewish values and a longstanding commitment to personal and corporate philanthropy that has earned her the 2016 Irving Eckhardt Mitzvah Society Award. “Elyssa is a tireless, highly skilled professional who has clearly demonstrated a powerful desire to ensure the future well-being and security of our community and our people,” says Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) Chair Rich Steinberg. “Personally, she has endowed her annual Lion of Judah gift. Professionally, she has introduced many wealth management clients to planned giving and has inspired and mentored numerous estate planning professionals to do the same.” Elyssa, along with her husband Barry, serve as role models for their two sons, Evan, 22, and Landon, 20, both of whom attend NYU, where they play for the university’s basketball team and are high scholastic achievers. Elyssa credits her late mother, a school teacher, for teaching her how to balance career, family and community involvement. “She worked hard, but we always had family dinners, then she was off to meetings at local organizations, holding many leadership positions,” she recalls. Elyssa earned dual degrees from the University of Pennsylvania – a BS from the Wharton School in Economics and a BA from the Annenberg School in Communications – and an MBA in Banking and Finance from Hofstra. For three decades, she has built a career in banking and finance, working for Chase Manhattan Bank, then BNY Mellon. In 2013, Elyssa joined Barclays, now Stifel, as a Director/ Investments. Along the way, her companies have been among Federation’s largest corporate sponsors. At Federation, Elyssa is currently Co-Chair of JJCF’s Create a Jewish Legacy program and a Women’s Philanthropy Board Member. She has served as JJCF Development Chair and PAC Chair, and received the 2013 National Endowment Achievement Award from Jewish Federations of North America. Among so many achievements, perhaps the greatest has been helping her clients make their philanthropic mark on the community. “In my professional life, it’s never been about generating revenues,” she says. “How do my clients want to leave their mark? How do they want to be remembered? There’s nothing more rewarding than helping them find their passion for philanthropy.”

PROFESSIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

PAC ENJOYS PRIME TIME AMID SERIOUS BUSINESS While our Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) members are known for their vital work of encouraging and guiding charitable giving through the establishment of new endowment funds, trusts, bequests, life insurance policies and IRAs on behalf of their clients, these legal, accounting, asset management, banking and insurance professionals have been sharing more than their commitment to the future of our community and our people. After kicking off their season with ocean views from atop the Waterstone Resort & Marina, the PAC just keeps raising the bar on spending prime time together. Chaired this year by Larry Blair, so far they’ve sampled fine bourbon and cigars at Prime Cigar and Wine Bar, gotten into the holiday spirit at Barrel of Monks Brewery (to which they brought hundreds of dollars in gift cards for JFS clients to purchase toys), and enjoyed a casual happy hour with premium networking at the Delray Beach hotspot, Salt 7.

THEY CAUGHT THE SPIRIT ON T HE SPIRIT OF ISRAEL COMMUNIT Y MISSION Our community’s day schools and on-campus agencies were well-represented, along with rabbis from different denominations. The missioneers varied by neighborhood and spanned multiple generations. Some were first-time visitors, and some had been to Israel a dozen times or more. Together, they made incredible memories and friends, growing closer as a community as they caught the spirit of heritage, history, After a year of imagining and planning

technology, adventure, Israeli culture

and democracy.

Dern and Adele & Herman Lebersfeld, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Spirit of Israel Mission took off full force and kept up the pace from November 13 to 19, with two full buses of friends and colleagues from throughout our vibrant, diverse South Palm Beach County Jewish community.

T E L A V I V, I S R A E L B O C A R AT O N , F L

With a first-rate, highly customized itinerary, they experienced the best of what Israel has to offer, seeing unforgettable sites, meeting people who are transforming the country and sharing the overall magic of our homeland - with access to key people and places unavailable on other trips. And all the while they got to know each other - as well as our Israeli brothers and sisters as they traveled and lodged, ate and drank, danced and prayed together, as one only can do in Israel.

“Planning the experience with our co-chairs Karen and Mark Dern and our Federation staff was a joy. They prepared a detailed hour-by-hour itinerary. Traveling with 75 of our neighbors, including seven Rabbis from our community added vitality and fun to our trip. Witnessing the resilience of the Israeli people was truly THE SPIRIT OF ISRAEL.” Adele & Herman Lebersfeld, Mission Co-chairs “We saw and learned as we could on no other mission. Seeing how important our Federation dollars are to those who need help made our gifts more real and vital. I will remember forever a woman in Sderot on the Gaza border thanking us for visiting when even her parents would not. We, too, are her community.” Mark Dern, Mission Co-chair with his wife, Karen

“We came together in strength and solidarity with our Israeli Jewish family. Our presence sent a loud, clear and critical message as they face their latest challenges, to our own community, and to the world — we proudly stand strong with the people and the state of Israel.”

Matt Levin, Federation President & CEO

“Not only were we deeply inspired by the extraordinary Israelis we met, but also by how each of us on the mission makes our own unique contribution to the Jewish people. We all could feel the holiness when, in our diversity, we come together to be one with each other.”

Rabbi Dan Levin, Temple Beth El

“The mission was memorable, heartwarming, joyful, fantastic. It’s hard to explain what it meant to travel with my son, but everyone felt like family. I’ll be on the next one!”

Norman Steinberg

“I feel very blessed and fortunate to be a part of a seismic shift of our community coming together. The mission has united us in the Spirit of Israel and, most importantly, to bring it back home and maintain that connection.”

Rabbi Ruvi New, Chabad of East Boca “New to Federation, the mission cemented the importance of giving back and being part of this community. Seeing those we help globally touched me deeply. My husband Jeff and I were so inspired, I became a Lion of Judah on our last night. The cherry on top was having a ball and making new friends!”

Alicia Spero

“Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and unaffiliated, each of us was passionate about Jewish life, whether security, the needy, the disabled, Holocaust survivors, Israel’s economy, Jewish unity, social justice or more. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by each individual on this mission”

Rabbi Jonathan Kroll, Yeshiva High School

“There were so many magical, inspirational moments on my first trip to Israel since high school. We made lasting friendships and visited important sites, but most touching was hearing from Israelis everywhere we went how appreciative they were of Federation’s support. Israel has forever changed me. As I said when checking out, I am ready to visit again.”

Karen Lazar

“I challenged myself to travel to Israel alone but found myself surrounded by wonderful Federation companions. Realizing the threats Israelis live with, I was deeply moved by a counselor who helps survivors of terror. I am proud to be part of this organization that helps so many people and makes it possible for this program to exist.”

Barbara Schwartz “Life has few moments of true beauty and meaning that leave an indelible mark on our consciousness. Celebrating Shabbat as a community overlooking the Kotel as the sun went down was one such moment for me and my wife, Jane, setting the tone for our entire Mission as we explored and grew together as a community.”

JCRC HOSTS BRIEFINGS AT LEGISLATIVE SENDOFF As part of its ongoing advocacy efforts on behalf of our community and our people, our Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) invited State Senators, Representatives and their staff to the Federation campus to meet with Jewish community leaders prior to the 2016 legislative session in Tallahassee. Joined by professional and lay leaders from the Federation, its beneficiary agencies and other local organizations as well as the Israeli Consulate and federal offices, they gathered for the annual Legislative Sendoff to learn about the needs of vulnerable local residents. In her welcome, Jill Rose, JCRC Co-Chair, stressed the vital role the legislators play in the growing partnerships among state government, the Federation and its beneficiary agencies. Neil Schiller, a lobbyist for the Florida Association of Jewish Federations, pointed to concerns of particular interest before the legislature, including: affirming the importance of the US-Israel relationship and condemning the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel; developing a Holocaust Memorial in the Capitol courtyard, and the success of Florida/Israel joint ventures through the space industry and technology enterprises. Presentations from the Federation beneficiary agencies, Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS) and Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC), highlighted local human needs and how much is at stake amid waiting lists and shortfalls in funding for services.

JFS President & CEO, Danielle Hartman, outlined the poignant needs for additional resources to address rapidly increasing senior hunger, to improve affordability and accessibility to mental health services, and to enable more Holocaust Survivor Assistance. JARC Executive Director, Dr. Deborah Hallow, and Director of Program Services, Nancy Freiwald focused on the need for supportive resources to enable those with disabilities to work, including pre-employment training and supervised experiences at community-based training locations that have been highly successful at JARC. JCRC Co-Chair Andrew Robins moderated supportive responses from elected officials and staff of elected offices. The group heard from State Senator Maria Sachs and Representative Dave Kerner. Also represented were the offices of members of Congress Alcee Hastings, Ted Deutch and Lois Frankel; State Senator Joseph Abruzzo; and State Representatives Bill Hager, Lori Berman and Irv Slosberg. JCRC Director Stuart Silver recognized the officials and their staff, who are instrumental to our work together on behalf of the community and the Jewish people. In February, local JCRC leaders joined those from Miami and Broward to visit officials in Tallahassee, where JCRC Director Stuart Silver, testified before the House State Affairs Committee in favor of a bill to fight BDS.

A SLICE OF ISRAEL PREPARES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO COUNTER ANTI-ISRAEL ACTIVITIES AT COLLEGE As the anti-Israel climate increases at colleges, more than 200 local high school juniors and seniors from public, private and day schools gathered for College Prep: A Slice of Israel on January 6. Together, on the Federation campus, they learned from student and professional advocates about addressing the challenges they are likely to encounter ahead.

Michelle Herman, Talia Lerner, Lindsey Sigal and Brandon Wolfe (FAU), and Jack Steinberg (Pinecrest) provided information and insights. Rayna Exelbierd, a Stand With Us Coordinator, also spoke. Among the issues addressed were false claims and myths against Israel as an apartheid state, its delegitimacy as a nation, and its efforts to defend its state and its people.

“Our Federation’s JCRC developed this program in response to requests from parents, grandparents and community leaders,” said Jill Rose, JCRC Co-Chair and chair of the event. “By reaching out to teens communitywide, we were able to draw an array of students, including those who might not be affiliated with a Jewish program, to learn from a variety of presenters.”

“Our students learned about challenges facing pro-Israel supporters at college, and gained a strong sense of the best ways to approach them,” said Rabbi Jonathan Kroll, Head of Yeshiva High School. “We are grateful to engage in a communal educational experience that deepens our shared commitment to Israel.”

Matt Weisbaum of Jerusalem U presented his organization’s riveting film, Crossing the Line 2: The New Face of Anti-Semitism on Campus. Tuvia Book shared how he made aliyah as a young IDF soldier, and encouraged the teens to visit Israel, learn and advocate. Dalia Perez (FIU) shared her experiences with campus-wide antiIsrael activities and personal harassment, and Tara Levy,

Financial support was provided by the JCRC, the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, Michael & Jill Rose and Warren & Robin Struhl. The JCRC convened the successful program with the support of Jerusalem U and Stand With Us, and the endorsement of: ADL, AJC, Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, JFNA’s Israel Action Network, AIPAC and The David Project.

CHESED DAY UNITES 600 STUDENTS FROM 5 LOCAL DAY SCHOOLS IN CARING More than 600 students from local Jewish day schools came together on January 13 for our annual Chesed Day. They learned about the Jewish value of chesed, the obligation to engage in deeds of kindness, and the responsibility to care for those around us and help people in need. Students in grades 1 through 5 from Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Katz Hillel Day School and Torah Academy were guided by 14 middle school students and 24 high school students. Students from Yeshiva High School and Yeshiva Tiferes Torah were also involved in planning the event.

DJE ETHICS INSTITUTE HOSTS HARVARD EXPERT Educators and parents spent an enlightening evening in Zinman Hall with Dr. Robert Brooks at the fourth annual Ethics Institute. A clinical psychologist on faculty at Harvard Medical School, Brooks is an international lecturer and author or co-author of 16 books. He offered strategies for nurturing motivation, learning, hope and resilience in students, as well as ways for parents to help children deal effectively with stress, pressure and other challenges. SOLD-OUT KRISTALLNACHT FILM FORUM HONORS TURNOFFS The 14th Annual Kristallnacht Film Forum showcased a powerful film on November 8. Full houses at two screenings in Zinman Hall were deeply moved by Defiant Requiem, the story of the creative rebellion led by Jews in Terezin, a Nazi concentration camp where thousands of scholars, musicians, actors and writers were imprisoned. Audiences also heard from Murry Sidlin, the film’s star, creator and inspiration. Presented by our Federation and March of the Living (MOL) each year, KFF raises funds to enable local high school students to join the MOL, the unique Holocaust and Israel education experience that culminates with travel to Poland and Israel.

Between screenings, a donor reception honored Ann and Byron Turnoff, who have supported the MOL in many ways for more than 20 years. The program, led by KFF Chair Ivy Dash and MOL Chairs Debbie Rudmann and Phyllis Gutmann, featured a candle-lighting ceremony, honored the survivors present and remembered those lost. Matt Levin, Federation President & CEO, described Federation’s increasing support for the March and profound commitment to our survivors. March alum Sarah Berger shared her life-changing experience. For more information about the March of the Living, visit molsouth.org or call 561.852.6013.

MARCH OF THE LIVING TO TRAVEL WITH RESCUED HOLOCAUST TORAHS Each year, our MOL students carry Torahs as they travel from the depths of the Holocaust in Poland to the jubilance of the modern State of Israel. But the Torahs they will carry this year were recently rescued after being stolen by Nazis 70 years ago. Students will experience the completion of the Torahs’ restoration and their ceremonial return to use in the Great Synagogue of Dabrowa Tarnowska, Poland. Thanks to a new relationship between MOL Southern Region and the Jewish Heritage Foundation the students will be the first to read from these Torahs since they were used by victims of the Holocaust.

The project was announced at a special ceremony that brought survivors, students and supporters to the Federation on January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The program included Sibyl Silver, founder of the Jewish Heritage Foundation, which is dedicated to restoring Torahs and Judaica plundered by the Nazis.

The first letter of the last word in one of the Torahs will be filled in by Yosef, son of Glen and Rosa Golish who have sponsored the Torah’s restoration in honor of his Bar Mitzvah. In Poland, the four survivors traveling with our MOL students will complete the last four letters, finalizing the Torah’s restoration. 73 CHAILIFE
