September Surprises

By Rivki D. Rosenwald Esq., LMFT, CLC, SDS

Did you wish you had taken your watch off? Maybe even remembered to put lotion all over your face so that you don’t have to now look like a raccoon? Or taking off your sunglasses?

Did you think you’d be getting back to school, work or shul and be looking like you’ve got some unwanted stripes instead that gorgeous tan?

Yup, September brings with it some fun surprises!

How does it feel to know your neighbor is ready with her meals – literally done

right up to Simchas Torah?

And you’re still deciding your menu! Or deliberating whether to stay home for the holidays all together or go to your mom, in-laws, friends, etc.

Those people who are so organized and have everything cooked and frozen already are honestly not the people you want to resent. You actually want good friends like that. Because, then they’ll invite you for meals and cut down your need for prep. After all, what else are they doing while everybody else is preparing and shopping other than creating their guest lists?

Does your neighbor have their sukkah up already? Does that make you want to scream? Seriously, is she doing all this because she needs it done or just to drive you a little crazy?

What about those people who have their tickets and hotel reservations for

their trip to Israel? No cooking or building at all. Are you feeling left behind?

September can get you thinking.

How about the school buses blocking streets?

The homework keeping kids too busy to relax like they did in August.

Or even the weather possibly changing, and next summer seeming to feel far off in the distance.

But, how about the fact that we are alive and can embrace every day even with its stresses and challenges?

Another month. Another set of issues – but we’ve got this! It’s not always easy. But there is a lot of good stuff, too. Even with funny tan lines, too much work, and funny surprises in different areas of life – we still have a lot of blessings if we just stop, look and focus.

The end!

Because I’ve got to go and make some more friends, because I haven’t figured out what to do about putting up a sukkah!

After all, what else are they doing while everybody else is preparing and shopping other than creating their guest lists?
