Letter from Leadership
Dear Friends,
As we look back on the past year, we recognize the critical juncture we find ourselves in. Amidst rising antisemitism –globally and here at home – and war in Israel, our community has shown extraordinary resilience and unity. It is through your unwavering support and generosity that we have been able to rise to these challenges and continue our mission to foster thriving Jewish life in San Diego, Israel, and beyond.
The concept of Meeting this Moment has been – and will continue to be – at the heart of everything we do. For many Jews in San Diego, this year tested our mental, spiritual, and emotional strength. Yet, in the face of adversity, we witnessed a powerful resurgence of Jewish identity and an increased desire for community connection. These factors contributed to our Federation’s most successful fundraising year to date, a testament to the trust and faith our community places in us.
October 7, 2023, stands as a defining moment for our generation. Our strong national Federation system, robust relationships with international and local partners, and our deep connection with Sha’ar HaNegev enabled us to respond quickly and compassionately, while our Community Security Initiative played a crucial role in safeguarding San Diego’s Jewish spaces. We also focused on programs that empower today’s Jewish leaders and increase community collaboration, while equipping young Jewish adults with the skills needed to lead our community into the future.
Meeting this Moment means addressing not only immediate needs but also the long-term challenges facing our people. It means fortifying our global connections while ensuring our community here at home remains safe, strong, and united. It means being proactive in our efforts to combat antisemitism, which we are thrilled to share will include a transformational approach to bring modern Holocaust education to learners of all ages across San Diego. It also means creating more opportunities for joyful, meaningful Jewish experiences – such as an exciting new opportunity for teens to travel to Israel, providing our youth with invaluable experiences that will shape their perspectives and commitments for years to come.
The dedication of our donors, lay leaders, and Federation staff has been instrumental in advancing our mission, ensuring the continuation of vital programs and services that support thriving Jewish life. As we reflect on our achievements, we are filled with pride and optimism for the journey ahead.
As we move forward, we remain dedicated to making Jewish life accessible, vibrant, and enduring, Meeting this Moment with initiatives that reflect our core values and address the evolving needs of our community.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and our entire Federation team, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your support. Together, we will ensure that Jewish life not only survives but thrives for generations to come.
With deepest appreciation,
Heidi Gantwerk, President & CEO

Events and Community
This past year, the San Diego Jewish community faced global challenges with courage and unity, steadfast in our shared resolve to or in partnership with other community organizations – we affirmed our heritage and fostered a sense of belonging that transcends Together, we achieved new records in engagement and participation,
Yom HaShoah
Over 600 attendees gathered for our Yom HaShoah Community Commemoration, making it one of the most well attended in San Diego's history. We stood in support of our local Holocaust Survivors, in solemn remembrance of those we lost in the prior year, and to reaffirm our commitment to "Never Again.”
Celebrate Israel: Now and Forever
Approximately 1,400 community members gathered to honor Israel's fallen heroes and remember the victims of the horrific October 7 attacks, including a poignant and deeply emotional tribute to those we lost in San Diego’s Israeli sister region, Sha’ar HaNegev.
Community Engagement
to embrace our rich Jewish identity. Through various celebrations, memorials, and gatherings – whether hosted by our Federation transcends generations. Each event was a testament to our strength and our refusal to succumb to the threat of antisemitism. participation, and solidified Federation's role in uniting our community.
Solidarity Vigil for Israel
Days after the events of October 7, San Diego came together for a Solidarity Vigil for Israel. Standing as one, more than 4,500 people gathered to mourn, reflect, and find strength in unity as we faced the reality of the conflict affecting our brothers and sisters overseas. Emotions ran deep as speakers shared heartfelt messages, calling for peace and reaffirming our unwavering support for Israel. The vigil was not only a time to grieve but also a powerful statement of our collective resolve against adversity.
DC March for Israel
Over 120 San Diego community members joined the historic DC March for Israel in November 2023, lending their voices to the largest pro-Israel gathering in U.S. history and reaffirming our dedication to Israel’s safety and sovereignty.
Jewish Community Days
Recognizing the challenges of this year and the need for a little levity, Federation found new ways to bring our community together for one simple purpose: fun. More than 700 people joined us for dedicated Jewish Community Day gatherings at the San Diego County Fair and Petco Park for a Padres game.
Caring for Jews in Need
Terrorism and war, economic hardship and instability, natural disasters... It was a year of unfathomable difficulty for many here in San Diego, in Israel, and around the world.
Caring for Jews in need – wherever they are and whenever they need us – is at the heart of what we do at Federation. Working alongside partners and supporters, we reach out to the most vulnerable among us – from low-income seniors and Holocaust Survivors to families in crisis and teens struggling with their mental health – making sure no one in our community is left behind. And when unforeseen crises impact our global community, we are there to offer support, resources, and hope when it’s needed most.
FY 2024 Highlights
$177K+ to support Holocaust Survivors and financially insecure community members
Disaster Relief
400 DIGNITY GROWS KITS were packed by 60 VOLUNTEERS
$9 MILLION raised following the attacks on Israel
In response to the devastating wildfires in Hawaii and earthquakes in Morocco, Federation helped ensure the distribution of food, medical resources, and other critical supplies to hundreds of thousands of victims, providing immediate relief and support during these crises.
Supporting Vulnerable Populations
We granted $177,500 to our partners at Jewish Family Service and the Kindness Initiative to ensure local Holocaust Survivors and financially insecure community members have access to the care and services they need, improving their quality of life and ensuring their safety and well-being.
Dignity Grows San Diego
Led by our Women’s Philanthropy Board, we launched a San Diego chapter of Dignity Grows to address hygiene poverty in the region. This initiative provides comprehensive hygiene kits, complete with a month's supply of essentials and period products, to be distributed for free by our partners at Jewish Family Service, Hillel of San Diego, Kindness Initiative, and Coastal Roots Farm as they come across individuals in need.
Response to Crisis in Israel
As Israel’s war with Hamas unfolded, San Diego's Jewish community made an invaluable impact on the relief and recovery efforts, particularly in the hardest-hit areas following the horrific terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023.
Our Federation quickly mobilized the San Diego community, raising over $9 million in a few short weeks. These funds were directed toward lifeline services, medical and trauma relief, economic recovery, and community resilience across the Jewish state.
A significant portion, over $4 million, has been directed to San Diego's Israeli sister region, Sha'ar HaNegev, which was at the epicenter of the attack. These funds have been used to purchase generators, relocate evacuees, renovate critical community spaces, and build youth resilience and trauma processing programs. An additional $1.3 million was allocated to Jewish Federations of North America's Israel Emergency Fund, supporting post-October 7 relief across the country.
Moving forward, we are committed to supporting Sha’ar HaNegev through people-to-people exchanges and new initiatives that will help restore it as a vibrant and resilient community. We are reserving some of our remaining Israel Emergency funds to address evolving needs and explore long-term investments, especially as the situation in the North escalates and additional support is needed for evacuees and victims of Hezbollah terror.
Our partners in Sha'ar HaNegev continue to be an important collaborator as we determine the most effective use of funds, leveraging government and philanthropic support for maximum impact.

Israeli Teens Come to San Diego to Escape War in Israel
In February 2024, in a poignant and heartfelt display of solidarity, the San Diego community welcomed 130 high school juniors and seniors from Sha’ar HaNegev, alongside 20 staff members, for 10 days of respite away from the throes of conflict in Israel.
This initiative’s success reflects the unparalleled collaboration and dedication within our community. The San Diego Jewish Academy, Lawrence Family JCC, Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, Jewish Family Service, and countless others worked to ensure the delegation’s experience was a well-balanced mix of fun, healing, and connection-building. It was a profound experience for everyone involved as we held these young souls close, formed lasting friendships, and offered the comfort of our community's warm embrace.
These moments of joy could only have been possible thanks to the generosity of our community, as most of the cost for the teens’ time here was funded by Federation’s Israel Emergency Fund.
During this visit, our San Diego community was introduced to brave and resilient teens like Peleg and Matan, as they shared their experiences of October 7 and what life has been like in Israel in the months since. Peleg said she could not have predicted what happened and has had many nights of nightmares since. Matan, who said he can see the Gaza border from his home, agreed it was a total shock and the worst nightmare. Both continue to process the events of October 7, as do so many of the other teens. But being in San Diego brought much needed relief. Matan said he really enjoyed celebrating Shabbat in San Diego, and compared it to spending Shabbat with his grandparents in Jerusalem.

Solidarity Missions to Israel
In November 2023 and then again in April 2024, dozens of Federation Board members, major donors, organizational leaders, and local rabbis participated in Solidarity Missions to Israel. These were intense, often emotional journeys as participants visited physical sites hit hardest on October 7, and met with families of the hostages, displaced refugees, first responders, trauma therapists, and IDF soldiers.
There were moments of hope, however, as participants saw firsthand the ways San Diego’s support is making an impact in our sister region, Sha’ar HaNegev.
The groups returned committed to sharing their experiences far and wide and continue to participate in a variety of panel discussions and forums throughout the community to ensure the truth of the atrocities that occurred is never forgotten.
“We visited the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council building, where we were greeted by a large poster memorializing Ofir Libstein, my friend and mayor, who was murdered in the first hours of the October 7th massacre. They had just finished rebuilding the Council building according to Ofir’s dream, making the structure itself a shelter from rocket attacks."

Building a Vibrant Jewish Future
Federation is deeply committed to investing in transformational experiences that ensure a brighter, stronger, and more connected Jewish community for generations to come. Our initiatives focus on inspiring a life-long love of Judaism, increasing community resilience, and deepening community bonds. And, understanding that a vibrant tomorrow depends on the cultivation of strong, insightful leadership today, we work to foster a robust pipeline of future leaders who share a commitment to Jewish values, leadership excellence, and the pursuit of a cohesive, dynamic community.
FY 2024 Highlights
Led by Federation and our partners at Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family Service, Lawrence Family JCC, and Leichtag Foundation, our community embarked on a journey of self-discovery through the release of “A Blueprint for Our Future,” a comprehensive study of the San Diego Jewish community. During special discovery events for local professionals and the community at large, we heard lively discussions on antisemitism, welcome and belonging, Jewish education and literacy, philanthropy and volunteerism, physical and financial well-being, and our connections with Israel –all underscoring the boundless opportunities that lie ahead, despite the challenges we face. See pages 18-20 for more details.
New cohorts of young adults, teens, and women participated in various Federation programs designed to deepen their interpersonal connections within the community and develop the knowledge and skills needed to become future Jewish leaders. In total, nearly 50 individuals in FY24 received leadership training through a Jewish lens across LEADS, the Teen Peer Leaders Fellowship, and the Pauline Foster Women's Leadership Institute.
For more information or to apply for our FY25 cohorts, scan here.
This year, our Federation awarded One Happy Camper (OHC) grants to 80 first-time campers to attend 11 Jewish summer camps across the country. Our Federation also supported San Diego's Camp Mountain Chai with a significant grant to cover both OHC first-timers and scholarships for additional campers as needed.
One Happy Camper grants go beyond the sun and fun - they ignite a lifelong connection to Jewish culture and identity. Studies show campers gain stronger ties to Jewish life, synagogues, and Israel. In addition to being an amazing summer, it's a path to lasting memories, friendships, and a vibrant Jewish journey.
Launching the Courageous Leadership Initiative
The Courageous Leadership Initiative is a new Federation leadership program launched in FY24 to strengthen discourse and relationships among the leaders and professionals shaping our community.
With sessions facilitated by experts from the Shalom Hartman Institute, this innovative leadership program encourages participants to wrestle with big questions, all through a Jewish lens.
Our first 60 participants – including some of our community's most prominent and respected leaders – addressed critical challenges and explored opportunities for partnership and collaboration.
We look forward to continuing this program in FY25 and empowering more Jewish professionals and lay leaders to effectively engage in complex discussions about Jewish identity, narratives around Israel, and existing in an increasingly polarized society.
San Diego’s First Jewish Youth & Teen Wellness Summit
Our inaugural Jewish Youth & Teen Wellness Summit marked a significant milestone in addressing the mental health and well-being of our young Jewish community members.
Nearly 80 community professionals, lay leaders, and parents gathered for engaging presentations and breakout sessions focused on the mental, emotional, spiritual, and social wellness of our youth and teens. This summit provided invaluable resources and best practices for supporting local parents and raising resilient youth, creating a healthier future for all. Each participating organization also received a grant from Federation to create or enhance their own teen wellness initiatives.
This summit is just the beginning of a broader conversation and commitment to our youth—ensuring they have the resources, support, and community backing to thrive emotionally and socially as they grow.
The summit will return in 2025 thanks to generous support from the Chortek Weisman Family Foundation.
“This was a really fulfilling day. I loved hearing from so many other Jewish organizations about what they're doing. Federation did an amazing job encompassing so many different groups that do so many different things for our community. I'm filled with so many ideas, and I look forward to talking to my group about how we can bring these ideas together to serve our teens better."
— Robin Spiegel, Congregation Beth-Israel, Executive Board and parent of a Jewish teen.
Connecting with Israel & Global Jewry
At Federation, we are dedicated to strengthening the bonds of the global Jewish community and fostering deep connections between San Diego and Israel. Through cultural exchanges, we facilitate meaningful relationships between San Diegans and Israelis – promoting understanding through travel, education, and communication.
By collaborating with global partners, we ensure the dignity and safety of at-risk Jewish populations by raising awareness and crucial funding in times of need, while also contributing to the growth and prosperity of emerging Jewish communities worldwide. And by underwriting travel opportunities to Israel for teens and young adults, we inspire the next generation to cultivate lasting connections to the Jewish homeland.
Much of this work is made possible through Federation’s ongoing, long-term partnerships with two highly experienced and trusted global organizations: the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI)
FY 2024 Highlights
Immersive Travel
We significantly increased our investment in immersive travel over the past year, organizing meaningful group trips to Israel, Mexico City, Cuba, Budapest, and more. These journeys exemplify our commitment to building lasting people-to-people connections and deepening Jewish identity. Looking ahead, we have an exciting travel calendar extending through 2027, filled with incredible opportunities to connect with global Jewry.
Teen Travel Grants
By underwriting teen travel to Israel and providing subsidies for other immersive Jewish experiences, Federation is inspiring the next generation to cultivate lasting connections to the Jewish homeland, explore their heritage, and engage with their peers. This year, Federation supported teen travel to Israel through dedicated grants to San Diego Hebrew Day School and San Diego Jewish Academy, and provided individual grants for teens participating in immersive programs with various local Jewish institutions, including trips to Poland and Costa Rica
ShinShinim Program
Each year, through our partnership with JAFI, Federation welcomes a new group of ShinShinim, Israeli high school graduates selected for a Year of Service Program, to share their love and knowledge of Israel with diaspora communities. This year, Federation brought 10 ShinShinim to San Diego to engage with our community and work with 20 local Jewish organizations, including synagogues, day schools, and senior centers. These young people also played integral roles in our largest community events, including Yom HaZikaron and Celebrate Israel: Now and Forever.
Exploring Jewish Budapest with JDC Entwine
JDC Entwine trips represent the pinnacle of our global engagement efforts. An unparalleled movement for young Jewish leaders, these experiences provide an avenue for hands-on impact on Jewish needs and issues worldwide. Through JDC Entwine, participants from San Diego connect with Jewish communities in varying circumstances, contributing to critical global work and fostering an environment of mutual understanding and shared responsibility.
In December 2023, 17 San Diego young adult professionals explored Jewish Budapest through this partnership. During the trip, the group immersed themselves in the city's Jewish history and learned about the enduring partnership between Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and JDC. The group also visited JDC-supported programs like JCC Budapest and heard from Camp Szarvas staff. Engaging with local Jewish professionals provided valuable insights into the current challenges facing Jews around the world.
Our next JDC Entwine trip is heading to experience Jewish Italy!

“Seeing
how Judaism continues to flourish despite the events happening around the world is so important to me and my family. Seeing the rich history coupled with the effort being put in by JDC and other organizations to help make Jewish life flourish in Budapest was moving. Seeing the old synagogues and new facilities so close together really drove that home for me.”

Creating a Resilient
We are dedicated to ensuring every member of our community can proudly and safely participate in Jewish life. We support and and welcoming for all. We also play a vital role in the global fight against antisemitism through partnerships with
Antisemitism: The Growing Challenge
Recent years have seen a troubling surge in antisemitic incidents, both nationally and within San Diego County. According to the Anti-Defamation League's 2024 report, there has been a marked escalation in antisemitic attitudes across America, reflecting a national trend that deeply concerns our community.
Locally, the numbers are even more troubling, with a staggering 200% increase in reported incidents in the past year alone, emphasizing the stark reality of the threat we face. These statistics are not merely numbers; they represent a call to action for all of us to stand against the spread of bigotry and safeguard our Jewish values and safety.
Response to Antisemitism and Security Efforts
In response to the growing challenge of antisemitism, we redoubled our commitment to enhancing the security and resilience of our community.
At the helm of our security efforts is Bill Ganley, our Community Security Director, who brings over 30 years of law enforcement experience to this critical role. Ganley works tirelessly alongside our local Jewish organizations, assessing and fortifying their premises, leading safety trainings, and serving as a vital liaison with law enforcement agencies.
Federation's proactive stance includes our partnership with the Secure Community Network (SCN), ensuring access to the highest standards of security expertise and resources. We actively assist Jewish organizations in navigating the complexities of acquiring crucial security grants that enable them to implement robust safety measures. Through these collective efforts, we are not just reacting to threats but preventing them, ensuring our Jewish institutions are places of safety and sanctuary.
Federation is a participating member of the Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC), which serves as the lead voice of California’s Jewish community to our State Capitol. In May 2024, our Federation team joined more than 500 others in Sacramento for JPAC's annual conference and lobbying day, supporting legislation that funds institutional security, addresses antisemitism in different ways, and supports victims of cyberbullying.
& Secure Community
invest in initiatives that combat rising antisemitism, and enhance security measures to ensure our community spaces remain safe with like-minded organizations, helping to amplify our impact and stand against hate on an international scale.
FY 2024 Highlights
Community Safety Trainings
Led by Bill Ganley, Community Security Director, we hosted several training sessions at which hundreds of community members learned about situational awareness, countering active threats, and Stop the Bleed. These trainings serve as important community tools as we navigate a more uncertain reality, and the level of interest demonstrates our community’s strong desire to take action and increase their personal preparedness.
Grant Assistance and Funding
We helped many local Jewish institutions secure state and federal security grants through Threat and Vulnerability Assessments and grant writing support. We also provided grants to the participating organizations of Federation's Jewish Community Security Institute to enhance their security plans and fund security improvements. And in response to heightened security needs post-October 7, we provided funding to Hillel of San Diego to ensure the safety of Jewish students on our local college campuses. In total, Federation provided $459,588 in security-related grants across San Diego County.
Antisemitism Roundtable
Federation's Antisemitism Roundtable continues to serve as a communal space for organizations addressing antisemitism to engage in information sharing, identify opportunities and challenges, and develop relationships that will strengthen our community's approach to combat antisemitism. As the challenges of this year grew, so did our work in this area.
Led and convened by our Federation, participating organizations include ADL San Diego, AJC San Diego, Hillel of San Diego, Jewish Family Service, Lawrence Family JCC, and Leichtag Foundation.
Uniting Against Hate
San Diego’s First Antisemitism Symposium
In February 2024, over 300 concerned San Diegans came together for a pivotal symposium co-hosted by Federation and the American Jewish Committee. This gathering was a powerful response to the rise in antisemitic incidents locally and nationally, providing a platform for education, dialogue, and community solidarity.
"Today's symposium represents a crucial step toward understanding the multifaceted nature of antisemitism and uniting to confront it," said one of the event's speakers.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear from various experts, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and leave equipped with actionable knowledge. Another participant reflected, "This isn't just about awareness; it's about taking that awareness and turning it into meaningful action that protects our community." The symposium underscored Federation's unwavering commitment to combating hate and our dedication to fostering a community that is informed and empowered to act.
Community Study Highlights
Over the past few years, the San Diego Jewish community has embarked on a journey of self-discovery through a comprehensive study published in December 2023 titled, “A Blueprint for Our Future.”
In partnership with the Maurice and Marilyn Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University and NORC at the University of Chicago, Federation and our partners at Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family Service, Lawrence Family JCC, and Leichtag Foundation completed a survey of 2,104 Jewish households across San Diego County and Temecula. The meticulous research and dedication of all parties involved have culminated in a profound understanding of our evolving community dynamics.
This study illuminates the diverse ways in which our community experiences and expresses Jewish life. The importance of gathering such data stretches far beyond the numbers; it captures the essence of our people's attitudes, behaviors, and needs. Each interview conducted and every statistic gleaned paves the way for informed decisions, ensuring that our resources, programs, and outreach efforts resonate deeply and effectively with every member of our vibrant, multifaceted Jewish community in San Diego.

What Comes Next
The “A Blueprint for Our Future” community study is meant to provide Jewish communal leaders and program developers with the empirical data necessary to make informed decisions, enhance the relevance and impact of existing programs, expand current initiatives, and identify new opportunities. This comprehensive resource ensures all efforts are data-driven and aligned with the actual needs and circumstances of our community.
We encourage our community organizations to use the findings from this study to support, validate, and reinforce their programs, ensuring they are responsive to our community’s needs. By examining the data, organizations can uncover new programming opportunities and areas requiring further inquiry or research, empowering them to adapt and evolve effectively.
Federation is committed to helping organizations leverage the study to its fullest potential. We are available to assist boards and staff in understanding and interpreting the data, facilitating active engagement with the study to meet both organizational and community needs. Together, we can ensure our community continues to thrive, guided by data and united in purpose.

A LOOK AHEAD
Here is a preview of some of the projects and initiatives we are most excited about as we work to Meet this Moment in FY 2025 and beyond.
Caring For Jews in Need
Community Guarantor Fund
Hebrew Free Loan San Diego provides interest-free loans at no cost to members of the San Diego Jewish community to support those who are facing serious financial challenges or investing in their life dreams. As loans are repaid, funds are recycled to make new loans. Hebrew Free Loan Societies around the world have proven the success of this model with a repayment rate of over 99%.
While this program is life-changing, some applicants struggle to obtain the 1-2 guarantors required to apply. We remain committed to supporting our community in times of need, which is why we are working to establish a Community Guarantor Fund, in which our Federation signs on as an applicant’s guarantor, should they need one.
Through this fund, applicants who are otherwise qualified but lacking a guarantor can still access much-needed funds for things like medical emergencies, unexpected housing expenses, small business funding and operations, and more.
Continued Care for Holocaust Survivors
Recent studies indicate that 38,400 Holocaust Survivors are living in the United States, and more than 30% are living near poverty. It is unconscionable and unacceptable that these courageous people, who have endured so much already, are living their remaining years struggling with day-to-day essential needs.
Each year, in partnership with KAVOD SHEF, Federation provides funding for Jewish Family Service in support of San Diego Holocaust Survivors. This funding provides urgent and critical emergency services to Survivors, including dental, vision, food, emergency medical support, emergency home care, emergency transportation, and urgent home services (such as utilities, repairs, and rent support).
We are proud to support this critical work.
38,400 Survivors in the US 30%+ near poverty
Building a Vibrant Jewish Future
Leading2gether
Each year, Federation empowers the next generation of young Jewish leaders through our Leadership, Education, and Discovery Series (LEADS). Participants engage in learning sessions focused on leadership through a Jewish lens and familiarizing themselves with San Diego’s many Jewish institutions.
These emerging leaders leave the program ready to spearhead their own community-building efforts and now have access to Federation’s Gather Grants to turn their ideas into unforgettable experiences. Whether it's a cozy Shabbat dinner, a lively game night, or a thought-provoking discussion, the possibilities are endless.
In FY25, we are expanding LEADS with a new concept known as Leading2gether, intended for married couples and long-term committed partners.
San Diego Jewish Community Conference
On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Federation will host the inaugural San Diego Jewish Community Conference for Jewish communal professionals and community leaders.
Building off the “Blueprint for Our Future” San Diego Jewish Community Study, this conference aims to surface and address the greatest challenges and opportunities facing our local Jewish community. Topics like Jewish literacy, belonging, financial insecurity, and attracting professional talent are examples of areas we may explore.
Attendees will benefit from the expertise and wisdom of local organizations and national field leaders.

Connecting with Israel
Discovering Our Roots: A New Annual Teen Trip to Israel
Thanks to the incredible support of a generous local donor, Federation is thrilled to announce plans for a new annual trip to Israel exclusively for San Diego Jewish teens. This immersive experience is intended to deepen participants’ understanding of their heritage by connecting them directly to the Jewish homeland. The trip will be a transformative experience, fostering a meaningful and lifelong relationship with Israel and the broader Jewish community.
Traveling to Israel exposes our teens to the rich tapestry of Jewish history and the vibrant realities of contemporary Israeli society. The opportunity to visit historic sites and engage with local communities, including Federation's sister region, Sha'ar HaNegev, broadens their horizons, offering a unique educational and personal growth experience. By seeing and touching the landmarks of our past and meeting the people shaping Israel's future, the bond with their Jewish identity is strengthened in a very real and tangible way.
This new initiative is rooted in the belief that firsthand experiences are pivotal in shaping our youth's perspectives and roles within the Jewish community. Our vision is that upon their return, these young travelers will be inspired to share their stories and insights, contributing a renewed sense of purpose and connection within our local community. The annual trip is more than just an excursion; it's a commitment to nurturing the next generation's relationship with Israel and their place within the global Jewish family.

Honeymoon Israel Returns!
We are excited to re-launch the very popular Honeymoon Israels program in FY25 after our last scheduled trip was postponed due to the conflict in Israel. We look forward to offering this transformative experience to couples in our community and helping them deepen their connections to the Jewish homeland.
Honeymoon Israel is a deeply subsidized and intimate journey to Israel for couples, enabling them to experience its culture, beauty, and society. More than a trip, it's a community-building endeavor that continues back in San Diego, creating enduring bonds and a sense of extended family through ongoing local events and programs.
Honeymoon Israel is open to couples of all cultural, racial, religious, gender, and sexual identities who are looking to create connections with each other and to Jewish life. HMI’s program is for couples with at least one Jewish partner (we define that broadly!), between the ages of 25 and 40, and who are within the first five years of marriage or early in their lifelong committed partnership.
Interviews are underway with our FY25 applicants, and we can’t wait to take them on this incredible journey.
Student to Student: Going Beyond the Classroom Creating a Resilient and
In preparation for the 2024-2025 school year, Federation recently launched a San Diego chapter of Student to Student (STS), a classroom-based experiential program that brings Jewish and nonJewish high school students together to learn about Judaism through personal storytelling.
We are excited about the impact this program will have as non-Jewish high school students engage with our STS Teen Ambassadors. The goal is to help students better understand Jews and Judaism, increase awareness of religious and cultural differences, and inspire students to challenge antisemitic comments and stereotypes both in and out of the school setting.
Originally created by Be the Narrative, a national nonprofit organization, STS has been operating for over 30 years and has been validated through independent research to change the lives of both Jewish and non-Jewish teens. By building bridges of understanding and appreciation between faiths, STS aims to disrupt patterns of ignorance and hatred that lead to antisemitism.
“Working with the Student to Student program was incredibly enriching not only because it was rewarding to become a source of knowledge and learning for others, but also because of the learning that I did throughout my time with the program. It was something that left a great impact on my life, including my college applications, as I was eager and able to share about it in my essays and interviews."

Bringing Modern Holocaust Education to San Diego
We are at a turning point. It is imperative that the lessons of the Holocaust are not relegated to the past but acted upon today to cultivate a culture of awareness and empathy. This urgency is matched by Federation’s largest-ever received gift, funding the creation of a dynamic, state-of-the-art mobile classroom that will bring modern Holocaust education to learners of all ages and backgrounds throughout San Diego County.
The mobile classroom initiative is not only about preserving the past but actively engaging with the present and fostering hope for the future. By delivering impactful programming and creating spaces for shared understanding, we are committed to combating the rising tide of antisemitism through education, advocacy, and community solidarity. It's a testament to our core values of remembrance and resilience, promising that from the ashes of history’s darkest period will rise a beacon of knowledge and light.
The mobile classroom is already in development and is projected to be in the field in 2026. In the meantime, Federation has developed a smaller unit (pictured left!) to be operational for the 2024-2025 school year. This classroom will offer curricula while serving as a makerspace for local partners and collaborators.
