The meaning of art
By Dale Hackerman
What is appealing to one person may be abhorrent to another when it comes to artistic taste. However, sometimes a lack of knowledge about a work of art found to be unattractive by the viewer, may be directly related to the individual’s background in its meaning and significance. This is not to say that understanding a work that you originally disliked will change its appeal. It will, however, enhance your experience of its importance.
Not every art historian or critic necessarily has the same interpretation of art. That is why it is important to listen to many discussions about art and have an open mind when it comes to reflection upon its meaning.
Since the beginning of human existence, art has existed. It is the why and how it has existed and expanded at the pace of civilization that makes it fascinating and ever changing.
We will examine specific works of art that illustrate the important role that art has in our lives, from the past to the present. I look forward to a lively discussion after the presentation, which will take place on Zoom Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. (ET).
