JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF) began in 1901 as a dream and vision to reestablish a homeland in Israel for Jewish people everywhere. Jews the world over collected coins in iconic JNF Blue Boxes, purchasing land and planting trees until ultimately, their dream of a Jewish homeland was a reality. Today, JNF continues to give all generations a unique voice in building and ensuring the prosperity of the land of Israel through their generosity and partnership with the people of Israel.
JNF strives to bring an enhanced quality of life to all of Israel’s residents, and translate these advancements to the world beyond. JNF is greening the desert with millions of trees, building thousands of parks, creating new communities and cities for generations of Israelis to call home, bolstering Israel’s water supply, helping develop innovative arid-agriculture techniques, and educating both young and old about the founding and importance of Israel and Zionism.
JNF is a registered 501(c)(3) organization and United Nations NGO, which continuously earns top ratings from charity overseers.

A Message From Our First Lady
Campaign Update
Lauren Lizerbram Where Else But Jewish National Fund?
Myra Chack Fleischer President, Women For Israel
AT TIMES I take to social media to share my love of cooking, usually
whipping up a batch of chocolate rugelach and a weekly Shabbat challah. Baking these wonderful treats connects me to our sacred traditions and fond memories of family. What’s more, I enjoy doing this with my grandchildren or a group of women who may be exploring the delicious roots of our culture, with all of its sweet traditions, for the first time. In this special issue of B’Yachad—focusing on the impact the women of Jewish National Fund have on the land and people of Israel—I have the opportunity to ‘get out of the kitchen’ and share deeper thoughts on my personal connection to Israel through Jewish National Fund. It began over three decades ago when my husband, Sol, and I moved to California. Since then, I have been involved in our community, volunteering for many causes, serving as a founding member of Congregation Beth Am in San Diego, and appointed by the Governor to a state commission. But it is my work with Jewish National Fund that gives me a voice and the power to make a difference. Where else can you make such a philanthropic impact and help develop a nation and its people? With JNF, you can visit Israel (repeatedly) and see your investment grow as you meet the thousands of individuals who benefit from your involvement. Jewish National Fund provides a place for everyone, whether you’re a long-time donor or at the beginning of your philanthropic journey. I recently returned from the Queen of Sheba Mission, a women-only tour of Israel. Many of the women on the trip had never been to Israel; some had not visited in years. It was heartwarming to see the reactions on their faces as they saw the amazing accomplishments and work JNF is engaged in across Israel. Jewish National Fund builds, invests in people, cares for people with disabilities, educates, and more. We look to the future and mirroring Herzl, say, “If you will it, it is no dream,” and that anything is possible. As past president of the San Diego Board, and now as a National Board member, I know very well that it is only because of the combined dedication and generosity of our donors that Jewish National Fund achieves all that it does. Traveling with Sol this last year across the U.S. and Israel, I have had the privilege to meet many wonderful donors and hear how they connect to the land and people of Israel. Whether it was an elderly individual or a grandparent who shared with me their treasured pushke, the couple who chose to support a community center in one of our new communities in the Negev, or the teen who made it into their A-list college thanks to our semester abroad program at the Alexander Muss High School in Israel—each has a reason why they love Jewish National Fund. Sol and I were very proud to dedicate the C. Hugh Friedman Music Room and program at JNF’s Sderot Indoor Recreation Center so that young people can hear the sound of music more than the sirens of the Red Alert. This program has been life-altering for the region’s youth, and we may yet see a virtuoso appear from its ranks. That hope is what sustains me to continue to do whatever I can to support our brothers and sisters in Israel, and as a woman, a mother, a grandmother, and a longtime donor, I will always be a part of Jewish National Fund. Join me. You can reach me at llizerbram@jnf.org
WOMEN ARE A powerful force in
philanthropy and that power shapes our world. The impact of women in philanthropy continues to surge as more wealth becomes concentrated among women. It is estimated that by 2030, three-quarters of all wealth in the U.S. will be controlled by women. Today, 60 percent of wealth is already managed by women. Studies also show that women are the major influencers of charitable giving in their households, and for the last decade, women’s giving has outpaced that of their male counterparts. At Jewish National Fund in particular, women philanthropists comprise 50,000 donors to the Jewish National Fund annual campaign and $24 million in donations. That number represents individual women who make their own gifts through our Women for Israel campaign. The impact is even greater when we consider couples who give jointly. Jewish National Fund strives to engage young women through JNFuture, its community for young professionals ages 22–40, to teach about the impact philanthropy can make. It is our goal to nurture leaders who will go on to participate on Jewish National Fund Task Forces, Committees, and at the Board of Directors level. Women who make a generous contribution can become members of the Sapphire Society—the Major Donor society for women—which now numbers over 835. The Chai Society, our donor society for women beginning their philanthropic journey, now has over 500 members. This past November, almost 40 women joined the Queen of Sheba Mission to Israel, with half never having visited Israel and previously uninvolved in Jewish National Fund. Now that’s impact! Our Women for Israel members have had, and continue to have, a unique opportunity to build the land of Israel for future generations. Remember, it was JNF women who raised the dollars to build the town of Zuqim in the Arava, jumpstarting Jewish National Fund’s Blueprint Negev initiative back in 2000. We built a town in the desert, on a parcel of sand. Today, 400 hundred people call Zuqim home. Women for Israel are not just givers—we are the doers! Water Update
Campaign All-Star
By Talia Tzour Avner KKL-JNF Chief Israel Emissary
Lauren Roberts Inspiring Leadership Through Actions PRESIDENT JOHN QUINCY ADAMS once
AT A DATE grove at the Southern Arava Research and Development Station, a colossal lysimeter system has been installed to study the relationship between the crops, land, and water. A revolutionary innovation, the lysimeter is a unique tool used to measure water and salt balances. It was built thanks to the support of Meredith and Christina Asch of Philadelphia, who wanted to honor the legacy of Meredith’s beloved father, Karl, and contribute to the development of the Arava and those who call it home. The Arava—a desert on the Israeli-Jordanian border spanning from the Dead Sea to Eilat—is one of Israel’s most remote, arid, and isolated regions. Temperatures can soar above 115 degrees Fahrenheit and drop below freezing, and annual precipitation is a negligible 3/4 inch. Yet, surprisingly, date farming is the Arava’s main agricultural crop, along with peppers and tomatoes. It’s a primary source of income for local residents and the region is the largest exporter of dates to Europe. The lysimeter and its unique and efficient system of measuring water and salt balances is key to the continuing success of agricultural production in the Arava, and indeed for farmers around the world facing water scarcity. With the precise data the lysimeter receives and provides, farmers are able to significantly increase their yields while saving precious water resources. The data collected from the lysimeter also provides local farmers with essential information on recommended irrigation practices and management. In turn, this enables farmers to continue developing and cultivating the best date tree groves even in regions faced with low-quality groundwater and soil low in organic materials but rich in salts. Thanks to the generosity of the Karl Asch Foundation, the lysimeter at the Southern Arava Research and Development Station will enable the farmers and residents of the Arava to plan, develop, and increase their livelihoods, while honoring “The lysimeter... the legacy of Karl Asch and helping to is key to the realize David Ben Gurion’s vision of making continuing success the desert bloom.

said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” Lauren Roberts not only inspires young Jews on their path toward leadership, but also leads by example. A New Yorker and JNFuture member, Lauren’s dedication to Jewish National Fund and Israel is inspiring as she works tirelessly to raise awareness for projects she is passionate about. She is the embodiment of Adams’ quote. Lauren began her involvement with Jewish National Fund in 2012 after attending a local New York City JNFuture event. Soon after, her love for JNF grew. She became a JNFuture Root Society member (the Major Donor society for young adults and professionals ages 22-40) and began serving on various event committees before joining the JNFuture New York Board in 2015. In 2017, Lauren increased her involvement and impact and became a President’s Society member and Chair of the JNFuture New York Board. “Lauren is a hardworking and engaging JNFuture leader,” said Michael Feinman, Jewish National Fund Tri-State Executive Director. “Not only is she committed to JNF’s vision and programs, but she’s an ardent spokesperson and is able to directly relate to people and explain how JNF is there every day helping all Israelis. She is an invaluable member of the Tri-State leadership.” Lauren leads by example and is often the first one to step up and take on challenges in new and creative ways. With her leadership, warmth, and kindness, the JNFuture New York chapter continues to thrive and encourage young adults to take on greater roles in Jewish National Fund and their local Jewish community. “Lauren lives by the motto that we are a family at JNF,” said Esti Marcus, Jewish National Fund Tri-State Campaign Executive. “She cares deeply about supporting our brothers and sisters in Israel, as well as the young professionals involved in JNF. She makes sure that everyone who walks into a JNFuture event feels welcomed and valued.” Lauren has attracted many young professionals to get involved with Jewish National Fund. Her philanthropic spirit and compassionate leadership is at the heart of the JNFuture New York chapter. Her love of Israel, getting others involved, and making sure each voice is valued, is what makes her a Campaign All-Star. PLANNED GIVING
Is Your Estate Plan Up-To-Date? By Judy Feig, Executive Director, JNF Planned Giving IN THE Forbes 2018 list of billionaires, women numbered 256 out of 2,208. Forty percent of businesses in the U.S. are owned by women, and philanthropically, women give to charities almost twice as much as men. How did we get here? Simply by taking charge of our lives, and that’s why it is so important to have a will or trust to ensure that your personal and philanthropic needs are met, your beneficiaries are current, and changes in tax laws work for you. Over the years, Jewish National Fund has received memorable seven-figure gifts from women, which have provided funding for notable projects for the land and people of Israel. To name a few: Danielle A. & Irving J. Grossman funded the JNF-Arava Medical Center in Sapir and the Grossman Amphitheater at the Be’er Sheva River Park; Lily Liebman and her late husband Eric are funding the construction of the Be’er Sheva Lake; Shirley and Robert Levitt built a synagogue in the Negev community of Carmit; Galli S. Ascher provided funding for JNF’s Zionist
Education & Advocacy, and Disabilities & Special Needs program areas; Gloria and Hans Schott’s bequest funds the Research & Alternative Energy and Environmental Sciences Center in the Arava; Shirley W. & Jack S. Liebowitz funded housing for senior citizens in Be’er Sheva; and Raya Cowan’s legacy helped construct the beautiful Pipes Bridge in the Be’er Sheva River Park. After you have provided for your loved ones, your philanthropic legacy and recognition can live on in Israel when you name Jewish National Fund as a beneficiary in your will or trust. You can leave a bequest as: • Bequest of a sum—A bequest of a specific dollar amount • Specific bequest—Designate a specific asset to be donated • Residuary bequest—After all debts, taxes, and other bequests have been paid, you can designate the remainder or a percentage of your property to Jewish National Fund • Restricted Bequest—The gift can be used for any long term JNF project or program area, such as Water Solutions or Community Building
Here is a helpful planning tip: IRAs, 401(k)s, and similar retirement plans are among your estate’s heaviest taxed assets. By choosing to leave these assets to Jewish National Fund, you can save on taxes and increase the amount left to your heirs. Other assets you may consider donating are life insurance policies, certificates of deposit, bank accounts, or brokerage accounts. To make this gift, simply request a beneficiary form from the controlling institution and name Jewish National Fund as a beneficiary. A JNF Planned Giving Specialist can assist you in this simple process, and ensure your legacy continues in Israel.
For more information on leaving a bequest in your will, contact Jewish National Fund’s Planned Giving Department at 800.562.7526, visit jnflegacy.org, or email plannedgiving@jnf.org
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Honoring a Grandfather and Supporting Israel SELMA GOLD DANZ was born in 1918 in
what was then known as the Arizona Territory. She began her career in the arts at age nine when she won a citywide essay contest in Phoenix. By age 13, Danz was writing and performing her own scripts for a variety program on the local radio station, KTAR, and appeared in 50 theatrical productions by the time she graduated high school. Following high school, she studied performing arts at the University of Southern California and the University of Washington, where she performed in local productions, receiving rave reviews from Seattle theater critics. Throughout her life, Danz continued in her interest and support for the arts by working as a volunteer docent for the Seattle Asian Art Museum for 14 years. “Selma loved to travel and experience different cultures, customs, languages, antiquities, and traditional arts and crafts,” said Danz’s estate trustee. “She also came to appreciate and espouse Eastern medicine and techniques to improve her health.” Danz, the grandchild of Jewish immigrants, was proud of and embraced her Jewish heritage throughout her life. She was a generous supporter and advocate for many
causes directly affecting Israel, Jews in the Diaspora, and those who were displaced and in need. Among the organizations near to her heart was Jewish National Fund, and upon her passing in 2016, she bequeathed 25% of the residuary of her trust to support Jewish National Fund’s Water Solutions in honor of her grandfather, who emigrated from Poland to Palestine before the outbreak of WWI. Danz’s gift will allow JNF to build more reservoirs, recycle water for agricultural use, help support Rainwater Harvesting Programs which educate students throughout Israel about conservation, and fund research and development projects so that Israel reaches the goal of recycling 95% of its water. Through her bequest to Jewish National Fund, Danz’s legacy lives on and her name will be recognized at Jewish National Fund's American Independence Park in Jerusalem.

All Hail the Queen of Kosher Cooking Jamie Geller Talks Simple and Easy Cooking SHE’S KNOWN AS “The Queen of Kosher,” the publisher
of the No. 1 Jewish recipe website JamieGeller.com, and author of six bestselling cookbooks, but Jamie Geller will bubbly and energetically say, “I’m not a chef!” Geller, originally from Philadelphia and now living in Israel (and mother of six, ages 3–13), explains she wasn’t always a natural when it came to the kitchen. “When I lived in Manhattan, back when I was a TV producer and before meeting my husband, I used my oven as storage space for sweaters!” Little did Geller know that her life—and relationship with cooking—would change with motherhood and once she and her husband made aliyah in 2012 with Jewish National Fund partner Nefesh B’Nefesh. “My wake-up call was when I thought to myself, ‘I’m an accomplished woman; I can do this,’” she explains. “I started trying recipes shared with me from my neighbors, friends, and family—only I simplified them and made them my own, primarily by eliminating cumbersome steps, heavy machinery, and a few ingredients.” It was during a Shabbat meal Geller prepared for some friends and a little encouragement by her husband that she began writing her first cookbook, Quick & Kosher – Recipes From The Bride Who Knew Nothing. The cookbook became a bestseller (now in its 7th printing), Geller was named the “Jewish Rachael Ray” by The New York Times, and she’s made several television appearances, including the TODAY Show.

Geller won "Chop and Chat Face-Off" at JNF's 2018 National Conference
“My wake-up call was when I thought to myself, ‘I’m an accomplished woman; I can do this.’” Geller’s recipes are designed to be simple and easy to make. She knows people can’t spend all day in the kitchen and there’s a lot to do—because she has tons to do herself. What’s the most popular, simple recipe? “My motherin-law’s broccoli kugel!” Geller says affectionately. “It’s one of the most popular recipes, week after week, after 10 years on our website. It’s just 3–4 ingredients.” Check out the recipe below for Jamie Geller’s simple broccoli kugel. It’s guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser and get you out of the kitchen fast. Powerful Women Change
ewish National Fund is much more than a philanthropy working to build a bright future for the land and people of Israel. As past president of Women for Israel, and executive director of Jewish National Fund's National Affinity Groups and Community Campaigns, we know no other organization provides a unique place for women who share a passion and partnership for Israel and a place where they can connect with the common goal of changing lives and supporting the ongoing development of the Jewish homeland. The women of Jewish National Fund—from our societies to board presidents to donors— are all an integral part of this mission.
In the following pages, you will read “I believe in Israel because it is my about Jewish National Fund and homeland, and it is my responsibility its partners that have assisted three to ensure that no individual, regardless Israeli female entrepreneurs, each at of their level of ability, is left behind and different junctures in their lives. They talked about the vision “I believe in Israel because it is an intrinsic of Jewish National Fund and its work all part of me, it deepens my soul, and across the land of Israel; the tremendous makes the world a better place.” impact of women in and on philanthropy; – Sharon David the unparalleled opportunity Jewish Executive Director, National Affinity National Fund provides women to give Groups and Community Campaign back, to have an equal say; and why they believe in Israel. Hand-in-Hand In this issue, B’Yachad’s editor-in-chief held candid conversations with six pairs of women—an American lay leader who supports a JNF Task Force or project and her Israeli counterpart—where they discussed their unique relationship with each other, Jewish National Fund, and Israel. Read how these women help Jewish National Fund create a better Israel for all, and why they believe in Israel. To join or learn more about a task force, visit jnf.org/taskforces
As we speak, the Red Alert has been going off every few minutes. Michal, how did you come to know Jewish National Fund? I used to work at the Negev Development Authority and I was familiar and amazed with what Jewish National Fund is capable of. It was JNF that created a strategy for the Negev, Blueprint Negev. Be’er Sheva is going through a whole revolution, and it has a lot to do with Jewish National Fund. I was a shilcha [emissary] for the Federation in Colorado from 2011 to 2015, and when I returned to Israel the first thing I did was call [ JNF CEO] Russell Robinson, and said: “Russell, my community needs JNF.” He was just putting together the Gaza Envelope Task Force, and said, “Don’t worry. We will be there for you.” E Betsy, why did you decide to dedicate your passion and time to Jewish National Fund? My husband was president of JNF’s Southern New Jersey Board, but I wasn’t too involved until 2012, when I went on a President’s Society Mission and got my firsthand, up-close look. I had heard about JNF’s Sderot Indoor Recreation Center, saw it for myself and fell in love with it and what it stood for. Then, at a JNF National Conference, I heard the mayor of Sderot speak about the playground’s positive impact. I was very moved and told him to remember my name and that I would be coming to the playground one day to throw a party there, because I’m in the party business. E Michal, was there was a sense that someone was ready and willing to help and listen? M Yes. I partner with JNF because it’s more than philanthropy. It’s about strategizing, making us dream big, and asking us the right questions so we know what our goals are and how to achieve them.

BETSY
STEADFAST
RESILIENT
INTERVIEWED BY DANIEL PERI
Betsy, how did you become Chair of the Gaza Envelope Task Force? B I was thinking about retiring and wanted to donate more of my time to JNF, so I set up a meeting with Russell, and he said, “Well, what’s your passion? What do you love the most?” And I said, of course, the playground. I told him that I knew they don’t really need anything there, and he said, “Yes, we do. We’re going to form a task force and you’re going to be the head of it. You’re going to work to change the lives of people living on the border with Gaza.” E It happened just like that? B I walked out thinking, “What just happened?” In 2015, we had our first task force mission and that’s when I finally got to meet Michal. E Betsy, do you promote the Gaza Envelope and the task force in your community? B Yes, I do. I speak about the area and its needs, and always mention JNF in any and all conversations. What I love is the speed in which we get stuff done. When a need arises, JNF steps up. M This is why we work with JNF—it’s about the partnership. JNF is there with us the day before, during, and after the crisis. This is the real magic of Jewish National Fund. E
Sderot Indoor Recreation Center How would you describe your relationship? We are closely connected. As soon as I saw what was going on with Gaza this past summer—the kite terrorism and the rockets—and even with today's attacks, I sent Michal a message. I think about her, her family, and the thousands of others daily. M When I first met Betsy, I was told that there’s a wonderful leader who’s really into the Sderot playground, and she’s coming to visit with the task force. I met this amazing, powerful woman who is so passionate. Sometimes there’s this magic between a woman to woman, a mother to mother. E Ending our conversation, I want to ask both of you to please finish the following sentence any way you want. “I believe in Israel because…” B I believe in Israel because it’s the homeland of the Jewish people, period. No question. M I believe in Israel because I believe in love and hope. It is the love of so many around the world going back thousands of years. Israel’s hope is unbreakable, she is undefeated. E

RONI WOLK TASK FORCE ON DISABILITIES

GAYLEE SCHIF EDITOR RONI
GAYLEE
Do you feel that JNF empowers women? Women’s power is really big and JNF gives us a place to grow, and Women for Israel events promote it. Israel was established by women, and men, that fought shoulder to shoulder, equally showing their strength and resilience, and Israel is very aware and appreciative of the strength of women. I see it in the women of Jewish National Fund. R Gaylee sets a very good example of what a strong, smart, and independent woman can accomplish in Israel and in partnership with those of us in the U.S. G As Chair of the LOTEM Committee, Roni is building bridges and creating better lines of communication between us in Israel and the community in the U.S. The strongest thing that stays for years is the sisterhood of empowerment, compassion, and devotion. E Roni, do you speak or hold events about the task force? R I do talk about it and get others interested, and brought a bunch of volunteers on board who didn’t have the confidence to speak for JNF. It goes back to that notion of empowering women and how JNF encourages you to have your voice and to move forward and grow. E Ending our conversation, I want to ask both of you to please finish the following sentence any way you want. “I believe in Israel because…” R I believe in Israel because I have to. Because what’s the alternative in today’s anti-Semitic, anti-Israel world? It’s just that simple. G I believe in Israel because it’s a democratic country, and as a daughter of a family that perished in the Holocaust, Israel is my last stop. It is the present and the future for me and my children. Roni, why did you come to Jewish National Fund and what drew you to it? Were you looking to give back in a way that’s meaningful to you? My husband and I had both retired and we were looking for a way to give back, so we literally called the local JNF office and said, “Can we come in and talk to you? We’d like to get involved.” It was kind of like that. E How did you end up on the Task Force on Disabilities? R We were at National Conference one year and said, “Let’s sit in on the disabilities session.” That was our eye-opener. It spoke to our hearts when we heard about all the programs JNF runs for those with special needs in Israel. E It was just a natural progression to get involved? R Yes, it really was. E Gaylee, were you familiar with JNF and its work with special needs before joining the JNF family? Yeah, sure, but I did not know the interrelationship inside JNF and the significance of the lay leaders. It’s one of the unique things about Jewish National Fund. JNF lets the lay leaders be very involved. E What’s the level of communication between you? R We communicate regularly through WhatsApp, send photos, and talk about each other’s lives. Gaylee and I have developed a great relationship and we worked together on redoing LOTEM’s marketing. I think we have a great working relationship and we’ve also become friends. G My relationship with Roni is both personal and professional. I very much value her input and contributions, and we really work well together and see good results.

MAKOM TASK FORCE
SUE
The Makom Task Force combines Jewish National Fund Go North and Blueprint Negev initiatives with Makom’s mission to develop all sectors and communities in Israel’s Galilee and Negev regions
SUE ROTHBERG Chair of Makom Task Force (Phoenix, AZ)
SHOSH
PEOPLE
Sue, how did you get involved with Jewish National Fund? Was there something that introduced you or brought you to JNF? In 2014, I went to a JNF Breakfast for Israel in Austin, and I felt that it was a good place for me to get involved in, so I made a $5,000 donation. E That gift made you a major donor, right? SR Yes, I learned about the Sapphire Society and the Women's Campaign, and I became a member. Now I’m a lifetime Circle of Sapphire. E Shosh, in the simplest way, what is Makom? Makom is made up of young individuals— our young pioneers—whose mission is to develop society in Israel to a point where it is healthy, vibrant, and comprised of all sectors, whether religious or secular. Makom’s mission is to take these people and the communities they live in and help them thrive. Today we call these communities “Israel’s frontier,” and Makom is in parallel with JNF’s strategies to have a large scale impact in the Negev and Galilee. E What made you—and Makom—choose to work with JNF? SM In 2007, I moved from Israel to Cleveland for a master’s program in nonprofit management, and we had to choose a local nonprofit to analyze. I decided to focus on Jewish National Fund in Cleveland, so I really got to know JNF. There’s a very deep and historic connection between Makom and Jewish National Fund, because JNF supported the Jewish people by building the land of Israel. This is what Makom is doing on a people level. E Sue, how did you get involved with the Makom Task Force? SR [ JNF CEO] Russell Robinson came over to introduce himself to me, and before I could blink twice, I was assigned to ride along on a mission with a new task force. I went to Israel with them and had the opportunity to see the impact JNF is making. We went up north and I saw all these communities that had young people settling in them, in the periphery. I got excited and thought these people are modern day pioneers; they are the most courageous people. I also had the opportunity to see the lay leader model that Russell has deployed and how successful it is. E Sue, do you speak about Makom in your community? Is the distance between Arizona and Israel an issue?
SHOSH MITZMAN JNF-Makom Liaison (Golan Heights, Israel)
Conversation Key E – Editor SR – Sue Rothberg
SM – Shosh Mitzman
We get on conference calls and everyone is great with email and responsive. We’re adding new task force members—including young people—every week and every month. People joining the task force is the evidence and proof that the message is getting out. This is very much about the diversity of Israel and making sure it’s an inclusive society. Everybody needs to be included; it’s Israel. Makom’s goals dovetail so nicely with JNF’s Billion Dollar Road Map. SM These are people who want to live a meaningful life and want to make a difference. This is the way to do it—through Makom. E Shosh, how do you see the impact of JNF’s American women on the lives of Israelis? SM We could not have done it without the wonderful women of JNF. Sue is the Chair of the Makom Task Force and has been an incredible leader, single-handedly establishing the task force and continuing to raise awareness for Makom. SR I’m so proud to be part of JNF, especially this task force, and Shosh has been an amazing partner and leader on the ground. E Ending our conversation, I want to ask both of you to please finish the following sentence any way you want. “I believe in Israel because…” SR I believe in Israel because of its resilience, pioneering spirit, and innovation. SM I believe in Israel because there’s no country in the world like it and its people. That’s what makes Israel so unique. SR

DEB MICHAL
Jewish National Fund Western Galilee Tourist Information Center in Akko You’re JNF’s original Go North pioneer. I’m the original Go North! I saw this plan for industry, education, medicine, and new residences… I thought it was a dream, but it was all there and I had to be part of this. So I started partnering with JNF. JNF walks the walk and things are done quickly. E
M
Projects in Israel can take time to be completed but JNF gets things done fast. M People in the north don’t have the patience for long strategies and plans, but every single change is a game changer in this region. The way things are executed, the efficiency, the timing, the way everything is open, clear, and straightforward— these are what I love about JNF. E Deb, how did you learn about the Go North Task Force? D It was an opportunity to start with something at the ground level, which is exciting. Getting involved in the task force was in part because of my work in the tourism industry, and learning about this partnership with Michal and the goal of increasing tourism—I thought I could add some value here. M Yes, and I believe we met on the second Go North Mission, and since then, we have worked together to promote the Western Galilee. E Michal, do you collaborate with Deb on strategies to increase tourism? D Absolutely. M Of course, because Deb really lives tourism, she gets tourism in the Galilee. She understands that it's a game changer in the region’s economy. Tourism means employment. We’re talking about small family businesses, such as boutiques, B&Bs, and shops selling all-natural products and cosmetics. Their success has a ripple effect on so many people throughout the region. D Tourism is just the means. The big picture is entrepreneurship and developing these small businesses as part of the overall Go North strategy. There’s a woman who is one of the providers in Western Galilee Now, and she brings people into her home for workshops. JNF’s work is allowing her business to grow, and she was able to send her daughter to college to get an education that she might not have ordinarily received. E Ending our conversation, I want to ask both of you to please finish the following sentence any way you want. “I believe in Israel because…” D I believe in Israel because it’s a country filled with passionate people, and it’s perfectly imperfect. M I believe in Israel because it’s so dynamic, it’s easy to make changes here, and it’s easy to impact the lives of the people.
GO
Deb, there are dozens of Jewish and Zionist organizations across the U.S. How did you arrive to JNF? I came to JNF 20 years ago around the same time [ JNF Chief Development Officer] Rick Krosnick was starting, and he said, “Here’s a person who’s a Zionist and I want to get her involved.” It was a very young organization even though it’s been around forever. E Jewish National Fund was founded in 1901, but it’s young at heart. D In its current form it’s a young organization. When I really started seeing the amazing work JNF was doing—the depth and breadth of JNF’s work in Israel—I decided to get reengaged. JNF is Israel. E JNF definitely makes its mark on Israel. D Everything JNF does is to build the land and the people of Israel, in a very broad sense. Not just on a narrow and single issue…I felt that JNF gave me the greatest impact. E Michal, why did you and your consortium of small businesses—Western Galilee Now— partner up with JNF? I first came to know Jewish National Fund and [JNF CEO] Russell Robinson in 2012 on a President’s Society Mission. Russell sent me his Go North plan…and I was amazed! In 2006, I moved from Tel Aviv to the Galilee, so I knew how wide the gap is between the north and the center.

Let’s talk about a special part of Israel, the Arava. Beckie, tell us, how did you come to Jewish National Fund? I got involved in 2003 when somebody from JNF approached me to get involved in Makor [ JNF’s group of dedicated lay leaders who solicit and speak about JNF's work in Israel]. In 2004, I went on a mission to Israel and absolutely fell in love with JNF. It became clear that JNF is really the only on-the-ground organization most connected to Israel. Other organizations do tremendous work in the areas they raise money for, but none of them have the impact directly on the land and the people of Israel the way JNF does. E How did you learn about the Arava and the task force? B I went to the Arava with Makor, and in 2010 I got a call from [ JNF CEO] Russell Robinson asking me to come to New York for a meeting. When I got there, he started telling me about the need to build a new medical clinic, and would I please set up a task force, the first one ever, to look into the needs of the Central Arava. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. E Other lay leaders have also had this reaction. B I put together a group of 35 people with expertise in the various issues facing the Central Arava. In 2011, the minister of the Galilee and Negev gave us 2 million shekels to get started on the medical clinic, and JNF decided that we were going to invest in it and it was built in less than three years. Beckie, you were also very involved in the planning and the design. You brought in the doctors and experts to sit down with our medical teams to make sure the design would fit the needs of the community. E That’s important—the projects need to be suited for the needs of the community. N I think it’s an attribute of JNF and the task force that they don’t impose anything on the community. E Noa, is this what makes the Arava Regional Council’s relationship with JNF special? N What’s very special about our work with the task force—and my work with Beckie—is that we always think of the benefit of the community. We can disagree on some aspects, but we always think of the community. I also like the process of being grilled on some points because this is what makes you think and make sure that the end results will be exactly what you’re aiming for. E It sounds like a partnership rather than a “Big Brother” type of arrangement.

N We’ve never had the feeling that Uncle Sam is telling us what we should do. On the contrary, it’s like your family member asking you what they can do to help or what’s needed. E Is the distance an issue? N We know each other’s families! We're that close. B I think I’m speaking for both of us that we’re very close friends. E Noa, can you tell me about a project or program that resonates the most with visitors or donors? N I cannot think of a single person that has walked into and visited AICAT [Arava International Center for Agricultural Training] and wasn’t blown away and left in tears by the students. This amazing project teaches arid agricultural techniques to students from Africa, Asia, and all over the world. You see the impact with the new campus and you hear from new students who talk about how their friends want to come to Israel for the program. Once you see it, you get it.
ARAVA TASK FORCE
This Task Force supports several key projects in the Central Arava with the goal of developing the region Beckie, what about Jewish National Fund stands out to you? B The way we all work together seamlessly is unique to Jewish National Fund. This is really an organization where people are there for the sole purpose of improving the lives of people in Israel. We’re all in it together. N It’s a very family driven organization, you think about what’s best for the family, and everybody contributes their part for the sake of the family. E Ending our conversation, I want to ask both of you to please finish the following sentence any way you want. “I believe in Israel because…” B I believe in Israel because when I stand at the Kotel, when I walk the land, and when I’m standing in the Arava, I feel the history of the Jewish people and believe that’s where I ultimately belong. That is my homeland and the country of the Jewish people. N I believe in Israel because I believe in hope and I believe in people, and I think there’s nothing greater than this country; it’s a country that shows that you can do anything you set your mind to— even the resurrection of a people in their country after 2,000 years. I like organizing Shabbat dinners and getting people to know more about JNF …I honestly would never have seen myself in this position without AMHSI-JNF.
WAY
We teach open ideas and ways of thinking that don’t belong to a specific stream. E What are some of the changes since Jewish National Fund acquired the school in 2013? O [ JNF CEO] Russell Robinson’s and JNF’s philosophy is if you’re going to do something, do it the best, and under JNF’s leadership there’s no corner cutting, which allows us to achieve a higher level of excellence in every area. Having JNF’s backing is strength and JNF will make it a reality. O
THE
LEADING
AMHSI-JNF students at the Hod HaSharon Campus
Rachel, you’re a student at the University of Florida. Do you feel AMHSI-JNF prepared you for university and independent life? R The college experience in high school is really important because a lot of kids want to move out of state for school, and then they’re put in that position and they freak out. Going to a different country and being in a dorm setting is helpful. This is your permanent grounds so you make it your home. E What’s your relationship with JNF now that you’re a Campus Fellow? R I’m part of the JNF family and the Campus Fellowship. As a Campus Fellow, I support proIsrael students, recruit students to join JNF college programs, and more. I also attended National Conference in Arizona and visited JNF House in New York. It’s insane how much JNF does. E You’re holding Positively Israel events on campus? R Yes, I do a lot of JNF events, hold fundraisers, and have speakers come. I like organizing Shabbat dinners and getting people to know more about JNF and recruiting students for Alternative Break. I honestly would never have seen myself in this position without AMHSI-JNF. I would never be this involved because of where I came from. O It’s very rewarding for me to hear, “It’s because of AMHSI-JNF that I got accepted to the college of my choice” from students. R Definitely! My college admissions essay was all about my AMHSI-JNF experience. O A lot of students write about their experience because it shows independence and the ability to handle college. E JNF is building an AMHSI-JNF campus in Be’er Sheva. Orit, what changes do you see on the horizon? O We are going to become the global high school in Israel program. The Be’er Sheva campus will accommodate growth, and we’ll see the Israel Continuum, which begins from childhood and continues through adulthood, come together in one space. It will be the place for Jewish education and a home to anyone who wants to learn. E Perhaps Rachel will find herself at AMHSI-JNF once again very soon. Ending our conversation, I want to ask both of you to please finish the following sentence any way you want. “I believe in Israel because…” R I believe in Israel because its changed people for the better. O I believe in Israel because it’s the home of the Jewish people and for anyone who wants to take pride in what we do. It is the light unto nations. E
CONTINUUM
Orit, in a nutshell, can you tell us what Alexander Muss High School in Israel (AMHSI-JNF) is? For nearly 50 years, Alexander Muss High School in Israel has been shaping the Jewish future through study abroad programs with its signature experiential learning curriculum. We have 30,000 alumni that have gone on to attend top universities, remain involved in Jewish communal life, and, in many cases, progressed to leadership positions. E Rachel, what’s your relationship with Israel and Judaism, how did you hear about the school, and why did you decide to go? My parents are Israeli and that influenced me on a cultural level, but not religiously. I speak Hebrew and have always loved Israel. We went to Israel frequently, but I never had the tourist or spiritual experience. It was more to visit family; I heard about AMHSI-JNF from a close friend involved with JNF, and she told me about this program and said I’d love it. JNF helped me financially to ensure I attended. I decided to go because I wanted to do something for myself and to connect more with my Judaism. E Orit, how did you get started at AMHSI-JNF? O I started working at the school in 2005 as comptroller. Shortly after, I was promoted to CFO, and in 2013, with the merger with Jewish National Fund, I was promoted to co-CEO. It’s an honor and a privilege to work with teachers and deans who are super talented, and the lay leaders are an inspiration. E A great aspect of AMHSI-JNF is that it takes a pluralistic approach toward education.

The Strength of Israel’s Workforce Women realizing their career plans and ambitions with Jewish National Fund-supported partnerships
BY MEGAN E. TURNER
Women are an integral part of any modern nation’s workforce, and Jewish National Fund is taking steps to ensure their success. From prepping for that crucial first job interview after graduation, to restarting a career in a new environment, Jewish National Fund, together with its partners and programs across Israel, helps women realize their ambitions, hopes, and dreams every day. We recently sat down with three women—Adva, Inbal, and Shira—to hear their stories. Adva Tzabari ADVA TZABARI, 30, GREW UP IN KIBBUTZ MEFALSIM, A MERE KILOMETER FROM THE BORDER WITH GAZA. dva has lived in Southern Israel her whole life. “My friends and family are here. My bond to the Negev and desire to remain in the region is a spiritual connection,” she said. So while finding her way to studying Industry and Management at the Technological College of Be’er Sheva wasn’t a stretch, the road to landing her first professional job—as an Import and Export Coordinator at SodaStream International—and the assistance she received along the way, was an unexpected bonus. “I read about the Lauder Fellowship Program, and I didn’t expect to find a program like this,” said Adva. She applied, was accepted, and became one of the program’s star graduates. The Lauder Fellowship Program, sponsored by Jewish National Fund and hosted at the Lauder Employment Center in Be’er Sheva, is designed to guide students, once they’ve graduated from university or college, through the transition into the work force, helping them find their first job in their field of study. For three months, participants meet two to three times per week for workshops, lectures, and one-on-one meetings with professional mentors, learning how to navigate into professional
life. “They taught us how to approach a job interview, write résumés, and gave us insight into the first steps in our careers.” The program also helps foster professional and personal growth. “Through the program I was able to identify my weaknesses and turn them into positive aspects about myself,” she said, adding, “It helped me start out on my life and career path.” A persistent and hard worker, Adva believes she would have found a job after her studies even if she didn’t get accepted into the Lauder Fellowship Program, but with greater difficulty. “The program gave me the push I needed to break into the employment scene. I am very satisfied with where I am today. Getting accepted and completing the program was significant for me and for my career at SodaStream.” When asked what’s next, Adva said she sees herself staying in the Negev. “I very much believe in this place—it’s somewhere you can develop personally, as it, too, is developing and blossoming.” And about her impact as a woman in the job market? “I always look at men and women the same way when it comes to work—everyone is equal,” she said.
Inbal VortmanShoham INBAL VORTMAN-SHOHAM, 39, CHERISHES THE VALUES SHE LEARNED IN GREEN HORIZONS. All of my adolescence was spent in Green Horizons,” Inbal said. And that’s not all. She has held almost every possible position within the organization in her three decades of work with them. Her partner was also involved, and now, her three kids call Green Horizons a central part of their childhood as well. Green Horizons, a Jewish National Fund-supported program, is an initiative focused on fostering leadership and Zionism through educational outdoor activities throughout Israel. It provides 5th–12th grade students with the opportunity to learn about Israel’s history, geography, and environment, and develop survival skills through adventures and experiences in the outdoors. Participants enjoy weekly outdoor activities, monthly overnight hikes, and longer treks and camping trips during school vacations. “It is hard for me to distinguish between my values and those that I received through Green Horizons,” said Inbal as she described how intertwined her life experiences are with her time in the program. “When you’re on these trips together the masks people wear melt away, and
you’re left with who each person really is. You learn to look at that person, to look for strengths, and to work with them. You learn to look at things as challenges, not as problems.” It’s this philosophy that pushed her to take a deeper look into how Israeli society and social services take care of adults on the autistic spectrum. In 2010, she founded Milestones for Life, a governmentsubsidized organization with the goal of changing the way highfunctioning young adults on the autistic spectrum integrate into society following high school. The organization demonstrates the continued adherence to the values of social entrepreneurship fostered by Green Horizons and works to develop new and innovative services for the autistic community. Green Horizons, Inbal said, also taught her about the power of women and the importance of equality. “From a young age, you understand that men and women can equally meet the challenges of the outdoors and leadership, and bring different strengths and diversity to the experience,” she said. “We consistently succeeded in giving a voice to our female participants, and we learned and exemplified that women can be in nature and still be feminine.”
Shira Siegel BEFORE MOVING TO ISRAEL, SHIRA SIEGEL, 39, LIVED IN NEW YORK CITY WORKING AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANT.
ife changed when Shira began her MBA studies at the University of Haifa in 2014, and made aliyah at the end of the program with the help of Nefesh B’Nefesh (NBN), eventually settling in Tel Aviv. “Knowing that the industry that I come from and wanted to work in is not particularly strong in Israel was a challenge for me,” Shira said. “It really forced me to take a hard look at what I wanted to do and how I wanted to impact the world." Nefesh B’Nefesh, a Jewish National Fund partner, works to make the aliyah [immigration] and cultural integration processes smoother and more efficient for North American Jews in Israel. An integral part of the organization’s work is the career coaching and employment guidance it offers to new olim [immigrants]. The NBN TLV Hub is a multi-dimensional community co-work and event space designed to allow for collaboration and innovation among olim. It’s there that Shira found her niche, deciding to hone her skills as a business consultant and coach. “Nefesh B’Nefesh gave me the opportunity to connect with other olim through offering my consulting services for free. Every time I offer these sessions, I’m
totally booked, and I am really grateful to be able to share my talents and help others succeed here,” she said. In her work with olim, she specializes in helping people looking to shift out of their career and break into entrepreneurship or business ownership, and assisting those who may want to turn a passion project into a business. “I really saw the need for this type of consulting here,” she said. “There are so many talented and passionate people; they just don’t always know how to take their talents and turn them into a sustainable income. My approach has a business therapy aspect to it, helping people out of their mental block, and building confidence.” Shira also feels empowered by the strong women she meets and sees trying to break into Israel’s business landscape. “I hope that I’m helping them own their place and their power as independent contractors. If they connect with who they are—as strong women— and if they have the ability to take risks, they can be successful here.” What’s her next step? She’s looking to expand outside the olim bubble and connect with Israeli entrepreneurs to help them also fulfill their dreams.

Giving Back Spending vacation time helping the family EUROPE, SOUTH AMERICA, or the beaches of Tel Aviv are some of the places one might choose to spend their vacation time. Not so for Dr. Dana Sless and Nurse Annette Vaccaro. Instead, they chose Israel’s Central Arava, located between the Dead Sea and Eilat and home to 8,700 people, as the vacation destination of choice and spent a week last fall giving back to the region’s close-knit communities, giving lectures and seminars at Jewish National Fund’s Danielle A. and Irving J. Grossman Arava Medical Center in Sapir. It all began when Dr. Sless, who specializes in pediatric and adolescent health care in Atlantic City, NJ, came across an article published in the summer 2017 issue of B’Yachad featuring Dr. Rivki Ofir, one of the principal researchers at JNF’s Central Arava Research & Development Center, and immediately felt drawn to the Arava and its communities. At the center, biologists are focused on finding cures for cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. After sharing information about the groundbreaking scientific—and agricultural— advances happening in the desert with her friend and colleague Annette Vaccaro, a registered nurse from Troy, NY, the pair decided to go to Israel together to volunteer in the Arava’s communities. “I’ve always wanted to take time to give back to my

Takeaways from the Queen of Sheba Mission American women experience Israeli resilience JEWISH NATIONAL FUND has been a leader in women’s philanthropy for more than 20 years, providing American women with opportunities to engage and understand the role of women in Israeli society on a personal level. This past November, 40 women, Jewish and non-Jewish, visited Israel on the Queen of Sheba Mission. Although tensions were high as Southern Israel was faced with rocket and missile terror from Gaza, the women witnessed the everyday realities of living life on Israel’s frontiers and experienced the country through a woman’s lens.
Here are some takeaways from participants: “Women are capable of creating change because we get it. Women care and as a group we bring together the power we each possess to help Israel in any way we can.” Ann Zinman, Scottsdale, AZ “This was my first visit to Israel, so I kept a very open mind. I just wanted to come, learn, explore, and see what
the Jewish National Fund buzz was all about. Each day uncovered something that was just astonishing. From staying on a kibbutz to the Ayalon Institute, to the Western Wall, to the green houses in the Negev, I was shocked by the resourcefulness and technology of the people. Being so successful in such a small, new country is just amazing.” Victoria Peters, Palm Springs, CA “Although we could not go to the Sderot Indoor Recreation Center, we knew it was filled with the laughter of children who were safe. This is how Jewish National Fund secures Israel’s future, and a big part of JNF’s Women for Israel is the understanding that women have a voice, and we make decisions on what we want to do. JNF has tremendous recognition for the power of women’s giving, and we follow our passion to make a difference in Israel.” Rhonda Sheakley, Cincinnati, OH
“One of the most powerful things that I find on the Queen of Sheba Mission is the camaraderie of the women, and seeing Israel through the eyes of those who have never been to Israel before. Suddenly, they realize what Israel is. It is a beautiful cosmopolitan country, filled with a rich history. To see Israel through their eyes is the best experience for me.” Myra Chack Fleischer, Rancho Santa Fe, CA Learn about the November 2020 Queen of Sheba Mission. Transmitting the Power of Women Celebrating strong, creative, and smart women on IsraelCast we see Israeli women in all professional fields, in the military, and in the highest levels of government—a source of pride for the people who call it home. Israel has been a leader in this regard: in the 1970s Golda Meir was the first female prime minister at a time when it was uncommon to see women lead nations. Today, the internet is populated by memes of strong female IDF soldiers, tech-industry giants, and, of course, the Israeli-leading lady herself, Gal Gadot. At Jewish National Fund, women from all walks of life can be seen in the content we produce on our social media channels. From Noa Zer, a farmer in the Arava, to Michal Shiloah, the CEO of Western Galilee Now (a Jewish National Fund partner), to IDF Major Riki Golan, a remarkable army commander who doesn’t allow her disabilities to keep her from achieving her dreams, to Noa Gefen, who works tirelessly to keep Israel’s history alive through heritage site preservation. Jewish National Fund works with many amazing women who make us proud. For more in-depth profiles on strong, creative, and smart women, head to our podcast, IsraelCast. Celebrating 47 Years of Incredible and Accomplished Women in Every Phase of Life at Alexander Muss High School in Israel
Amazing Alumnae The AMHSI-JNF Impact Fellow “THERE ARE GOATS in
our classroom!” Moments like this are typical at Alexander Muss High School in Israel (AMHSI-JNF), where Israel is the classroom. Every few days, we embark on a tiyul. Hopping on the bus is like entering a time machine. I hiked Masada with zealots, traveled through Hezekiah’s tunnels under siege, and charged into a crusader fort with my shield and javelin. My notebook has come to life—I feel the struggles and celebrate the successes of my ancestors. I had been to Israel before on another AMHSI-JNF summer Talia Krausz, Fall 2018 Semester, 2018 Greater New York Impact program, Roots Israel. I loved the focus on community service Fellow, 2017 Roots Israel Alumna and agricultural sustainability, and every day I fell in love with the land and connected back to my roots (no pun intended!). Comparatively, AMHSI-JNF is a dorm experience where we have daily classes: Jewish history in the morning and General Studies in the evening. We bring the same subjects from home so we will be on track upon our return, and my teachers—who are brilliant and caring—taught me to love learning. Being an Impact Fellow grants me the opportunity to grow as a Jewish leader. I blog about my journeys, create podcasts, and take workshops from role models in the community. My knowledge of Israel advocacy, leadership, and personal Jewish identity has grown sensationally. Not only am I prepared for college, but I’m ready for the future. This once-in-alifetime opportunity has transformed my life in the best way, and I’m honored to share my story with the world. This was written during Talia's last week at AMHSI-JNF in December 2018

Ilana Cohen Spring 2015, USC Maya Fox Spring 2016, Buffalo State College Marnina Goldberg Spring 2016 CU Boulder, JNF Campus Fellow Maddie Levin Spring 2015, Union College, JNF Campus Fellow Ellie Schneider Summer 2016, USC
Ellie: I had the opportunity to participate in AMHSI-JNF’s 2016 Summer session. This unique program allowed me to learn about Israel from an academic perspective while visiting the sites we were learning about. The hands-on learning prepared me for college by teaching me how to apply my knowledge to real life. I am grateful to participate in JNF's Alternative Winter Break, to explore Israel through a new lens, and give back to a country that has provided me with so much joy! JNF has made all of these experiences possible. Maya: AMHSI-JNF set the foundation for the deepest love of Israel imaginable. AMHSIJNF set me on the path I chose to follow for my future, securing my decision to spend a year in Israel after high school, and spend my winter break this year volunteering with JNF. I owe my life and who I am today to the experiences in Israel JNF has given me! Ilana: AMHSI-JNF taught me so much about growth—personally and academically—and lifelong friendships that have helped me navigate my way through college.

The Professional and Lay Leader I LIVED IN Israel between my junior and senior years of high school. It was a time when the country’s roots were flourishing and a stark desert was being transformed into robust farmland. I enjoyed exploring the Jewish homeland, learning in every way possible, and found myself especially drawn to the ingenuity of the people. Fast forward 27 years, and today, Israel is the tech capital of the Alison Karp, Summer world, producing Intel chips, AI technology, advertising platforms, 1991, President of L’Equipe L’Oreal, AMHSI- and more. The same ingenuity I admired is driving global innovation. JNF Board of Directors I returned to Israel three years ago with my Israeli-born husband, and I appreciated the AMHSI-JNF program in an entirely new way. There wasn’t a corner of the land that I hadn’t learned about and visited in 1991, and I was now enjoying modern-day Israel with my incredibly robust foundational knowledge. Today, I’m beyond proud when colleagues reference superior Israeli technology. With my recent appointment to the AMHSI-JNF Board, I’m thrilled to encourage students to grow and learn in such a special place. This is easily the most meaningful effort I’ve been a part of, despite contributing to marketing campaigns for the largest U.S. brands. I can’t wait to see what another 27 years will bring!

Kim: I went to High School in Israel (HSI) in 1985, but it still feels like yesterday. I always say it was the single best thing I ever did for myself. I still keep in touch with the friends I made, and I still have all of my source books that I used to learn everything about Israel. I knew that I wanted to pass on the HSI legacy to my family. My daughters had heard me talk about HSI their whole lives. One of the greatest joys I had was visiting my daughter Paige on campus with her dad. The three of us standing in Wohl Dormitory, where Paige and I both lived, was such a touching moment in our lives. My sister also went to HSI (in 1987) and lived in Wohl too! The impact HSI had on my family and me is unending! Elana: AMHSI-JNF was an amazing experience. I loved every tiyul we went on. Exploring Israel was a great way to learn about my history and my religion. Israel has always been a part of me and I believe that part of the reason for my career path in Judaism is due to my experience at HSI. Paige: AMHSI-JNF is still something I talk about today. We travelled all over the country— it was exhausting, but we were exhausted together. Going to AMHSI-JNF truly helped me prepare for college by teaching me how to study and be independent. I loved being in Hod HaSharon and exploring the city, and, of course, the schnitzel on campus was the best.
