What British-based American Jews think about the nailbiting battle for the White House P10

Brits turn their backs on biased Israel boycotts Survey reveals more than half now oppose ‘singling out’ the country for sanctions A dramatic rise in opposition to boycotts of Israel among the British public is revealed in a new survey published today. A Populus opinion poll, commissioned by Israel and Middle East think tank BICOM, shows more than half of the 2,050 respondents are against “singling out” Israel with boycotts. The numbers show that 51 percent of respondents “do not boycott Israeli goods,” an eight percent rise when compared to figures from a similar poll in October 2015. Similarly, 56 percent thought that Israel boycotts “hurt both Palestinians and Israelis” – nine percent more than 2015. “Our poll shows a very significant shift against the idea of boycotting Israel,” said BICOM chief executive James Sorene. “The British sense of fair play is

a clear theme in the poll as time and again respondents reject singling out Israel, given everything else going on in the world.” Of those surveyed, 48 percent felt that “hating Israel and questioning its right to exist” was “anti-Semitic,” with 45 percent of Muslim respondents agreeing with that statement, while only 20 percent thought otherwise.

Elsewhere, some 57 percent said simply criticising Israel was not in itself anti-Semitic. Interestingly, in the week of the 99th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, 43 percent also said they agreed with Britain’s then-foreign secretary Lord Balfour, who wrote in support of a Jewish homeland in historic Palestine in 1917. This figure was up from 40 percent last year. In addition, 57 percent of respondents felt that Israel was Britain’s ally, the highest percentage for any Middle Eastern country. Again, this figure was higher than in 2015, with a five percent increase. “The judgement of the British people is stark,” said Sorene. “They understand that hating Israel and questioning its right to exist is pure anti-Semitism.”

Members of the Goldsmiths University rugby team, who are ‘excited’ to display support for Israel boycotts on their new team shirts

…But nobody told these scrumbags A rugby team at a top London university has unveiled a new kit featuring a Palestinian flag in a show of support for the boycott Israel movement. A group picture was posted on the Goldsmiths University team’s Facebook page showing the flag on the shirt sleeves. The post said: “We’re excited to reveal our new kit which features the Palestinian flag on the as part of our SU’s continued commitment to supporting BDS. We’re hoping through our work with Goldsmiths Palestine Society we can encourage more societies and clubs to endorse and raise awareness about BDS.” A Union of Jewish Students

spokesperson told Jewish News: “The Goldsmiths Israel Society have been promoting a scheme called ‘Bridges Not Boycotts’, but Goldsmiths RFC seems to only be interested in creating further divisions.” A spokesperson for Goldsmiths said: “The team is independent to the university. This decision was taken by Goldsmiths RFC. Sport should be unifying and should be played without borders and by all. No one should feel alienated or excluded. It is disappointing that the club has taken this decision. We are working across campus to ensure all groups feel safe and supported at Goldsmiths.”

News / Anti-extremist boss apology

Muslim anti-extremist chief sorry for Sandy Hook post By Justin Cohen justinc@thejngroup.com @JewishNewsUK

A co-founder of a government-supported women’s network praised by Theresa May for tackling extremism has profusely apologised after it was revealed she and a colleague in the organisation had posted conspiracy theories about Israel on social media. Odara, based in the West Midlands, runs workshops on personal and educational development and provides a “safe environment for discussion on issues like domestic violence, mental health and extremism”, according to a press release produced following a visit last summer by May, then Home Secretary. She praised the organisation at the time for working “to stand up against the extremists who seek to divide us”. But Jewish News has learnt of social media entries promoting conspiracy theories about Israel, including by cofounder Aysha Iqbal, who posted a link on Facebook in 2013

to a video in which it is claimed Israel was responsible for one of America’s worst mass shootings at Sandy Hook primary school in America. Above the link she wrote: “Check this out!! Truth be told! @:” The video shows a US news show in which the interviewee claims the fatal attack was “revenge” for Israel’s failure to thwart the recognition of Palestine at the UN and that a cover-up would ensue because politicians are “bought by the Israel lobby”. He says it is “Zionist controlled Hollywood, a Zionist controlled news media that is the conduit of all this violence. It brings this imagery into every home in America.” But Iqbal has now issued a full apology after the material was highlighted by Jewish News. “The post was meant to be ‘tongue in cheek’, poking fun at the conspiracy theory nature of it as there was a lot of it around at the time,” she said. “Looking back, and given the work we now do challenging such conspiracies, I can see how offensive it appears without the context. I sincerely apologise for my extreme naivety and the fact I had not picked up on this and removed it once we engaged in work challenging such views. Many people will be rightfully appalled.” Describing the video as “shocking and a huge distortion of the reality of the terrorism we face,” she added: “Such irresponsible posts and theories help add to the grievance culture that exists which, in turn, fuels extremism and is precisely what I and Odara work to challenge.” Tasmiyah Bint Naeem, described on her own Facebook page as Odara’s outreach and engagement officer, shared a post late last year that included a number of links including one entitled “Israel did 9/11 – all the proof in the world”. She also shared an image purporting to show a young boy outside a police station in search of his mother who is alleged to have been detained by Israel, adding the words: “May Allah distory (sic) Zionists”. In response, Iqbal said the “volunteer” feels “very upset with herself for not having removed the posts earlier and regrets having posted them in the first place”. She described her as “an example of someone we have engaged with since our work to challenge extremism and hate crime of all forms. The volunteer in her youthful activism fell for such conspiracies and is an example of the impact such posts have on the vulnerable.” Iqbal insisted the volunteer began engaging with Odara only this year, since when she has “reflected on her views... She immediately recognised the inappropriateness of the tweets and has begun removing all similar past content.” Odara is backed by the Building a Stronger Britain Together scheme, launched by the government this year to help projects countering extremism to expand their reach. Its website expresses gratitude for “capacity building support” in social media training and campaigns. Iqbal said: “Not everyone immediately goes back to recheck previous posts that may be inappropriate and misleading. It is something we will correct and ensure forms part of our work to challenge such views.” Organisations supported by government are expected to share values including respect for different faiths and to carry out due diligence. Jewish News understands the Home Office is looking into the matter. A spokesperson said: “We support Odara and other civil society groups that seek to counter extremism. Odara has received in-kind support and funding for an outreach project in Birmingham which aims to develop women’s resilience to radicalisation.”

MPs: ‘Wipe out this scourge’

by Stephen Oryszczuk stepheno@thejngroup.com @JewishNewsUK

Universities Minister Jo Johnson and former Secretary of State for Communities Sir Eric Pickles have roundly condemned an anti-Israel protest that disrupted a University College London (UCL) event with Jewish students last week as “simply unacceptable in 2016”. Conservative Friends of Israel chairman Pickles said in a statement: “There is a deep-rooted problem in our universities that must be wiped out.” It follows a fracas outside a Friends of Israel society event at UCL last Thursday night, organised by media watchdog CAMERA, at which former IDF soldier Hen Mazzig was due to speak. Mazzig now works for

grassroots group StandWithUs. The university’s Friends of Palestine Society president Yahya Abu Seido was this week referred to police by the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism (CAA), which said the protest “resulted in three female students being assaulted”. Student Tamara Berens said: “From the outset, the protest was consumed with screams full of blind hate, which quickly blurred into physical aggression and violence… We ran from room to room, made to feel like fugitives.” A CAA statement read: “At one point, protesters jumped through a window to confront a terrified audience of predominantly Jewish students.” Johnson said it was a “troubling incident,” adding: “Universities have

a clear responsibility under the 2010 Equality Act to ensure they protect their staff and students and act swiftly to investigate and address hate crime, including anti-Semitic related incidents reported to them.” While acknowledging the importance of free speech and debate, he said: “There is no place for students that use intimidation or violence to attempt to shut down the free and open exchange of ideas – even ones they disagree with.” Pickles said the UCL protest was “shocking,” adding: “The growing problem of anti-Semitism on university campuses is a serious challenge facing the Jewish community and the UK as a whole.” Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted an event at King’s College, London, in January, throwing chairs

PRC makes legal threat The Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) has said it will sue for wrongful reporting following its launch event of the Balfour Apology Campaign at the House of Lords last week, hosted by Baroness Tonge. The event was reported to have featured an anti-Semitic “speaker” who likened Israel to Islamic State and blamed Jews for the Holocaust, but the PRC said it was not made clear the “speaker” was a Jewish audience

member from anti-Zionist group Neturei Karta. In a three-page statement, the PRC said it “demands that those media publications correct the erroneous facts presented and provide an accurate account of the events”, adding: “We also intend to seek legal action for the false accusations and defamatory allegations directed against the centre.” It criticised “lazy” and “poor” journalism from news outlets

including The Guardian, The Times, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express and The Daily Telegraph, as well as Sky News. Tonge, who was later suspended and then resigned from the Liberal Democrats, did not respond to or refute the points raised by the audience member. A PRC spokesman said: “We completely disagree with the audience member’s comments and do not tolerate anti-Semitism.”

ANTI-SEMITISM COMPENSATION Sheffield Hallam University has been told to pay a disabled Jewish student thousands of pounds in compensation for not properly considering his complaint about offensive social media posts from the University’s Palestine Society. The recent graduate, who has not been named, was told that his complaints were unfounded when he first raised concerns of anti-Semitism with the Student’s Union. However, the Office of the Independent Adjudicator has ruled that the university “failed to properly turn its mind to the question of whether [he] had experienced harassment as a result of certain aspects of PalSoc’s social media activity”.

Britain’s fourth largest university was told to pay the student £3,000, comprising £2,500 for the main complaint plus £250 for a nine-month delay and £250 for “the manner in which the University questioned [the student’s] ownership of the complaint”. The complaint was made after the student saw posts by the PalSoc highlighting Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, which he deemed offensive. However, the OIA said: “We have not reached a finding that aspects of PalSoc’s social media were anti-Semitic or that Mr Parker was racially or religiously harassed.” It added: “It is not for the OIA to determine the issues in the debate about where criticism of Israel crosses into anti-Semitism.”

and setting off fire alarms to derail a talk by the former head of Israel’s secret service. Pickles said: “As a result of the current climate and increasing reports of anti-Semitism on campuses, both Israeli students and Anglo-Jewish students are wary of pursuing higher education in the UK. This should be a concern to us all.”

Universities UK, which has recently investigated anti-Semitism on campus, said it will prioritise the topic. A statement from UCL said: “We have received allegations of violence and intimidation which, if confirmed, we condemn in the strongest possible terms.” It had earlier said: “We regret protesters took measures to try to prevent the event from happening.”

The UCL protest resembled a scene from a horror movie HEN MAZZIG

FORMER IDF SOLDIER

At 7.30pm last Thursday, I was inside the classroom together with about 25 people, mostly Jewish students. Four students suddenly broke into the room, jumping through a window. The noise from outside was incessant: “Intifada, intifada!” I was almost killed when I was 12, during the Second Intifada – and traumatic memories flood back. “Where is Hen? Where is Hen? War criminal! Murderer! Shame!” Although it sounds like a scene from a horror movie, this was just a simple event arranged by Jewish students with CAMERA – a group on campus committed to combating libels about the Jewish state at university campuses across the world. England was my last stop on an international speaking tour – and while my events in north America were a huge success, I knew London would be different. Finally, at 7.45pm, I began my talk. The activists were furious – and chanted even louder. “Intifada, Intifada, Intifada!” Rap music was being played on a booming sound system. The police were outside, haplessly impotent. They were simply watching on the sidelines. I was determined to continue, to not let them stop me from speaking. I told my story: about my Mizrahi heritage; how my family was expelled

from the Middle East; my humanitarian work in COGAT; surviving a suicide bomb as a child. I struggled to speak above the noise of the protesters – but more than ever, of the thousands of talks I’ve given across the world, I poured out my soul. I finished my talk – and reassured the crowd I would be glad to return. I will not be silenced- and they should not be silenced. “We won tonight,” I assured them. I asked everyone to stand tall. We all stood up and started singing Hatikvah. I was soon rushed out of the campus, in a police coat by the police. They kept telling me: “Don’t look back, keep running.” It was as if I were escaping a war zone. That night has strengthened my resolve more than ever. The hateful mob reaffirmed my conviction that anti-Semitism remains alive – in Europe, North America and beyond. In 21st century Britain, Jews leaving a room to screams of “Shame! Shame! Shame!” is utterly horrifying. I couldn’t sleep all night. I kept on thinking: how do we fight such hate speech? We fight bigotry and fanaticism by standing tall – but never being afraid. They must see that we are unbreakable.  Hen Mazzig is a former lieutenant in the Coordination of Government Activities in the Terrorities. News / Anti-Israel priest, Mental health award, firework attack NEWS IN BRIEF

MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGNER WINS TOPLAND AWARD Mental health campaigner Jonny Benjamin has revealed he “suffered in silence for so many years”, but has now found a purpose in helping others “break the taboo” of their illness. Benjamin, 29, made the heartfelt comments after receiving Jewish Care’s Topland Business Luncheon Award yesterday afternoon. The event, at Grosvenor House Hotel, in Park Lane, helped raise more than £250,000 for the charity’s residential homes for people with mental health needs and featured guest speaker Nick Robinson, former political editor and presenter of Radio 4’s Today programme. Benjamin, who has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, revealed how he had struggled since a child with hearing voices, depression, psychosis and eventually suicidal thoughts. Aged 20, the former JFS pupil prepared to throw himself off Waterloo Bridge before a stranger, whom he later found out was called Neil Laybourn, came forward and convinced him not take his own life. He said: “I want to do what I can to break [the] taboo, as mental health is still such a taboo for so many.”

Vicar ‘flouts promise’ Anti-Israel priest Dr Stephen Sizer has been told he may be removed from his parish post before his planned leaving date next year, after he breached his employment terms by attending an event with Baroness Jenny Tonge last week. Bishop of Guildford Andrew Watson said he was “disappointed” at Sizer’s appearance at the controversial House of Lords event and subsequent social media commentary, adding that the vicar was now walking a tightrope. Both actions breached the terms of an agreement between Sizer and the Diocese of Guildford, under which he prom-

ised to refrain from writing or speaking on themes relating to the Middle East.

Sizer said he did not believe the terms of the agreement still applied, since he had already given notice of his resignation as vicar of Virginia Water from Easter 2017. However, following their meeting this week, the bishop said: “I have spoken with Dr Sizer to make clear that I am disappointed by his actions and to clarify that our agreement categorically must run until the end of his tenure of office.” Bishop Watson added: “Dr Sizer has been warned that any further breach of the agreement must result in his tenure of office ending with immediate effect.”

IDF releases Brit An Israeli military court has ordered the release of a British citizen who was “shackled and threatened” for three weeks by the Shin Bet security service, after a confession his ruled to have been extracted under physical and psychological pressure. Faiz Mahmoud Ahmed Sherari, 49, a dual UK-Lebanese national who has lived in Britain for the last 23 years, was accused of being a courier for Hamas during a four-day visit to the West Bank in September, when he was arrested. However, a judge sitting in an Israeli military court ordered his release after finding that “prolonged painful shackling [and] threats” were used between 15 September and 6 October to “exploit the [man’s] weaknesses”.

DIVORCE AID FOR MUSLIM WOMEN An Islamic academic has cited British laws that “pressurise” Jewish men to grant their wives a religious divorce in a parliamentary submission on Sharia courts. Dr Amin Al-Astewani told the Home Affairs Select Committee that the English legal system gives “exceptional avenues” for Shariah Councils to accrue legal force, citing those that benefit Jewish women in the UK. It comes as campaigners warn that disbanding Sharia Councils could leave thousands of Muslim women trapped in abusive marriages.

Barrister disbarred / Tonge quits / News

Anti-Semitic barrister is disbarred for hate tweets UK Lawyers for Israel has described the unprecedented disbarring of a barrister for anti-Semitic and racist comments on social media as “a significant victory” – and warned that further cases may be in the pipeline. Barrister Ian Millard (pictured), who tweets under his own name, was thrown out of the profession last week after an independent disciplinary tribunal found he had made “seriously offensive” comments. They include Nazi propaganda images, attacks on Jews, Muslims and ethnic minorities and repeated racist tweets. Sara Jagger, the Bar Standards Board’s director of professional conduct, said: “The use of such offensive language is incompatible with the standards expected of barristers. The tribunal rightly found that such behaviour diminishes the trust and confidence (which) the public places in the pro-

Barnet diamond dealer laundered £30m for crooks A Barnet diamond trader and his beautician partner have been jailed for 11 and 10 years respectively for their role in laundering at least £30million. The Old Bailey heard how “greedy” Danny Koort, 52, and Jeanette Rosen, 49, used Koort’s business Kosher Diamonds as a front to launder “dirty money,” with Rosen regularly transporting tens of thousands of pounds in cash around London. Police found £300,000 stashed in Koort’s Fitzrovia offices when they finally swooped on the couple in 2014, after months of surveillance work. Investigators later deciphered codenames

Israel, where he is a director, told Jewish News: “We regard this as a significant victory for two reasons. First, it has stripped this particular vile prating Nazi of his cloak of professional respectability as a barrister. “Second, it has opened our eyes to a possible new route of bringing justice to other anti-Semites who are members of otherwise honourable professions.”

to reveal the huge amounts changing hands. Sentencing Koort to 11 years, Judge Worsley told him it was greed and nothing else that led him into a life of organised crime, as he Jailed: Danny Koort had been well-off beforehand. “You were a successful dealer in diamonds and precious metals in Amsterdam, but that was a front for money laundering, a means of explaining large amounts of cash going through your premises,” he said on Monday. “You were to all intents and purposes an honourable man with a legitimate and profitable business. But it was greed that turned you in this direction.”

New eruv plans for ShabbatUK Large swathes of north London will fall within two new Jewish religious boundaries – or eruvim – under proposals being launched in time for ShabbatUK. One will stretch from Barnet in the north to Finchley Central in the south, incorporating Totteridge, Oakleigh Park, Whetstone, West Finchley, the new Millbrook estate and Woodside Park. It will link up with existing eruvim, in Mill Hill and north west London, and with the other eruv proposed, in Barnet. The two shuls involved – Woodside Park and Barnet – are hoping to host pre-launch events on 31 October and 1 November respectively,

with support from leading members of the London Beth Din. Rabbi Barry Lerer of Barnet United said: “We have been working very hard on the eruv, which will have a huge impact on our community, for a number of years. After all our hard work, it is great to know that we will be able to launch on ShabbatUK.” Woodside Park Synagogue vice-chair Naomi Cohen said: “The creation of the eruv has been a dream to enable the community to push wheelchairs and buggies and carry Shabbat essentials. It is extremely rewarding and gratifying that after more than 10 years, we will be able to launch the eruv on ShabbatUK.”

Tonge quits Lib Dems following suspension Controversial peer Baroness Tonge has quit the Liberal Democrats following the party’s decision to suspend her. Her departure came after calls for Britain to apologise to Israel and the Jewish people following “outrageous” comments at an event hosted in Parliament by Tonge. One audience member compared Israel to Islamic State while Jews were blamed for the Holocaust. Cabinet minister David Lidington told MPs he was “genuinely horrified” by reports of the remarks. Tonge, who sits as an independent in the Lords, chaired the meeting. Gavin Stollar from Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel said: “Baroness Tonge has reaped what she has sown. She is an anti-Israel zealot who can now espouse her offensive views outside our party.” Simon Johnson, chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council, said:

Resignation: Tonge

“Baroness Tonge’s antiIsrael hatred is there for all to see and I trust that the Liberal Democrats will continue to take steps to counter anti-Israel hatred within their party.” Jonathan Arkush, president of the Board of Deputies, called the suspension “the right decision.” He said: “She is a repeat offender, propagating the worst antiSemitic tropes over and over again.” The Israeli embassy in the UK simply said: “AntiSemitism should never be tolerated.”  Opinion, page 16

News / Balfour anniversary, JVN awards, shuls merge

Balfour 100 plans revealed Plans to commemorate the centenary of the Balfour Declaration have been unveiled one year before the historic landmark anniversary – as a new poll revealed twice as many Britons back the 1917 move as oppose it, writes Justin Cohen. Politicians, diplomats, university students and schoolchildren will have an opportunity to mark the issuing of a letter by then foreign secretary Arthur Balfour pledging support for the establishment of a home for the Jewish people in Palestine – described as “67 words that led to the creation of Israel”. Simon Schama will deliver the annual Balfour Lecture on the eve of the centenary (1 November) next year, while synagogue movements across the religious spectrum will take part in a national Balfour Shabbat the following weekend. A Balfour 100 steering committee – which comprises 23 communal and Israel organisations, including the Board of Deputies, Jewish Leadership Council, Zionist Federation and all the shul movements – are also planning a series of events for the day itself. “As a community, we are proud of the fact it was the British government that took the first step to recognise Zionist aspirations of any kind,” said JLC chief executive Simon Johnson. “The current government supports Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and supports its right to defend itself. This is an opportu-

nity to express pride and commemorate what was a really important step on the way to the creation of Israel. We hope when there are diplomatic and political events, people will accept this is an important part, not just of Jewish history, but of this country’s history.” The Declaration – passed by Lord Balfour to ZF chief Lord Rothschild on 2 November 1917 – said the government would do all in its power to pursue a home for the Jewish people while “it being understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the rights of existing nonJewish communities in Palestine or the rights enjoyed by Jews in other countries”. The Balfour Committee is chaired by Lord Jonathan Kestenbaum on behalf of the Rothschild Foundation Europe, with the current Lord Rothschild, a driving force behind the commemorations, hosting its first meeting in the same room as his ancestor received the historic document. It will coordinate events and encourage participation across the community. The Union of Jewish Students, which has a seat around the table, will coordinate activities on campus. A new website, balfour100.com, has also been launched to offer detailed information about the Declaration and what led to it, providing an insight into the key players involved and a timeline with more than 550 key moments. Johnson said the “authoritative” resource was not meant

pened. I would hope that people who go to the site will understand why the Declaration was issued, the impact, what was going on at the time and what happened after it was issued.”

VOLUNTEERS HONOURED Nominate your top teacher AT JVN AWARDS EVENING Inspirational organisations and individuals who dedicate their time to charity were honoured at the Wohl JVN volunteering awards on Tuesday night. Shortlisted nominees, selected from a pool of 60, were in the audience at artsdepot in North Finchley as the winners were announced across 10 categories including overseas volunteer, innovation, volunteer of the year and team of the year, plus the prestigious lifetime achievement in volunteering award, which was handed to Alan Lazarus. Marsha Gladstone, who won volunteer of the year, said in her acceptance speech: “I wonder how many people are really aware of the huge role volunteers play in making that great success of these organisations possible.” JVN chairman David Lazarus said: “These awards collectively show that volunteers are truly valued.” The night was compèred by Lord Daniel Finkelstein and music was provided by acapella group The Four Sons. The awards were media sponsored by Jewish News.

Inspirational teaching at Jewish schools across the UK will be celebrated for a second time at an awards ceremony in February, in a joint initiative between Jewish News and Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS). At this year’s inaugural event, teachers were

recognised in four categories. Organisers have confirmed that the 2017 awards will feature four more, covering primary and secondary education. PaJeS’ executive director Rabbi David Meyer said the awards were “an opportunity to recognise the exceptional efforts of the teachers and staff in our schools” because “it is thanks to their dedication that our schools are effectively educating the next generation”. This year’s awards will be for Best Emerging Teachers, in their first three years of teaching; Modern Hebrew; Special Needs Education and Assistant or Deputy Headteachers. The deadline for nominations is 13 November.

Liberal shuls agree to merge Liberal Judaism has welcomed the merger of two synagogues into a new community serving East London and West Essex. Members of Bet Tikvah and Woodford Liberal Synagogues voted in favour of forming a new single congregation led by Rabbis Richard Jacobi and David Hulbert. Rabbi Danny Rich, senior rabbi of Liberal Judaism, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to bring together the strengths and resources of Bet Tikvah and Woodford Liberal Synagogues. “This new 700 member Liberal community is a statement of our confidence in, and desire to serve the Jewish community of Redbridge, Essex and beyond.”

Bet Tikvah Synagogue

Eighty-six percent of Bet Tikvah members and 81 percent of Woodford Liberal Synagogue members voted in favour of unification. Woodford Liberal Synagogue chairman Jonny Hurst said: “The whole will be greater than the sum of its parts – creating a stronger and more secure community, without losing the identity and values which we have both developed and cherished over many decades.”

Balfour Declaration anniversary/ World News

10 things you may not know about Balfour To mark this week’s 99th anniversary of the Balour Declaration, we reveal some fascinating facts about the most famous proclamation since the Ten Commandments

1

The Balfour Declaration is in the form of a letter dated 2 November 2017 from Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild. It comprises just 67 words.

2

Lord Rothschild was asked to convey the letter’s contents to the Zionist Federation. This was because the letter could not be addressed to Chaim Weizmann, the main driver behind the Declaration, as Weizmann was not the most senior member of the Zionist hierarchy. Therefore, Lord Rothschild, as de facto head of the British Jewish community, was asked to pass the contents of the Declaration to the ZF.

8

In May 1918, Chaim Weizmann met the Emir Feisal – the single recognised Arab leader at the time – in Aqaba where they exchanged letters of mutual support. With T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) as a middleman, the two continued with a series of meetings that led to a 3 January 1919 memorandum in which Feisal endorsed the Balfour Declaration. However, he was unable to deliver the memorandum due to Arab hostility. Imagine how the course of history would have changed had he been able to do so.

9

The Balfour Declaration was given legal effect and became part of international law at the 1920 San Remo conference where Britain was given a Mandate to administer Palestine and was required to implement the Balfour Declaration.

3

The final letter, which was sent on 2 November, was the fifth draft of the historic Declaration. You can see the text of all five drafts at www.balfour100.com

4

A month before issuing the Declaration, the War Cabinet asked for the views of eight Jews, four anti-Zionists and four Zionists. Letters of support were submitted by Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz, Lord Walter Rothschild and Zionist leaders Nahum Sokolow and Chaim Weizmann.

5

Chaim Weizmann was known to the British Government for his scientific work for the war effort from Manchester University, inventing a method to produce the synthetic acetone used to create cordite, a military propellant.

6

Arthur Balfour and Chaim Weizmann had first met in Manchester in 1906. They reacquainted their friendship in 1914 through Weizmanns work in the war effort.

7

The legendary editor of the Manchester Guardian, CP Scott, after the whom the Scott Trust is named, did more than anybody else to open doors for Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann in his quest for British support for the Zionist enterprise.

10

W i n s t o n Churchill (pictured) told the House of Commons in May 1939: “Either there will be a Britain which knows how to keep its word on the Balfour Declaration and is not afraid to do so, or believe me, we shall find ourselves relieved of many overseas responsibilities other than those comprised within the Palestine Mandate.”

11

In honour of the community coming together for this special anniversary, here’s a bonus fact... The Declaration was not published in the press until 9 November – a week after it was issued. The government intended that it should not be made public “until a favourable military situation had been brought about”. This was known by 8 November. However, since this was a Thursday, the news was delayed until the next day, a Friday, when it could be revealed in the Jewish Chronicle (a popular newspaper of the time).

News / US presidential election, world briefs

American Jews over here, voting over there There are 380,000 US expats in the UK. Ahead of the Presidential election, we speak to British-based voters to find out why they are unanimously backing Hillary Clinton Jews living in London gave a thumbs-up for Hillary Clinton this week, ahead of an election that has polarised opinion like never before, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. For Holly Kal-Weiss, 51, a “lifelong Democrat” from Illinois and Clinton voter, her decision is a matter of principle. “I wouldn’t vote Republican,” she says. “I admire the Greens, but I wouldn’t waste my vote, especially as it might give Trump a way in. There is no choice in this election. Only Hillary can do the job.” Kal-Weiss says the candidates’ views on Israel and/or Jewish issues had no bearing on her considerations. By far her bigger concern is Trump who, she says, is not the ‘friend of Jews’ he purports to be. “He’s a danger to democracy,” she says. “He’s a bigot and a pig. Anyone who wants to ban Muslims, who calls Mexicans ‘rapists,’ is not fit for office. If Jews think he wouldn’t turn on them, they are foolish.” President Trump would be “an embarrassment,” Kal-Weiss argues, adding: “His

close relationship with Russia is also a worry, but the real concern is the Supreme Court justice appointments [over which he would have power, as president]. He could turn the clock back on women’s and minority rights by appointing someone who would overturn all the gains made in the last 50 years.” Bristol University’s David Tiedemann, 25, a “stalwart Democrat” born in California, agrees and says “a sense of decency” swayed his vote towards Clinton. “Trump simply lacks the moral fibre,” says the London-based PhD student. “His anti-Hispanic racism, questioning the legitimacy of American democracy, misogyny, the unconstitutional attack on Muslims – it all makes him unfit for the highest office of state,” he says. Likewise, Israel and/or Jewish issues are not a factor in his decision. Trump’s statements, and the way he has divided opinion, appears to have galvanised American Jews such as Tiedemann in a manner

Meet the ‘Juslim’ superheroes When best friends Yasmin Idris and Casey Pearlman decided to embrace each other’s cultural background for Halloween, they probably didn’t think it would make them famous. But that’s exactly what happened. The Californian pair, both 13, created their own heroes by merging Casey’s Jewish ethnicity with Yasmin’s Muslim identity, creating ‘The Juslims’.

not seen in past elections. “I have never before felt such a necessity that a brand of politics has to be refuted,” he adds. “Trump has to lose, and lose badly. The American people must reject his destructive political style or else his ideological successors will poison US politics for a generation to come.” Is Trump worrying for Jews? “It is worrying for any Jew when a political figure proposes open religious discrimination against whatever group,” Tiedemann says. “Trump’s open embrace of anti-Muslim repression evokes some obvious strong historical memories so, yes, the rise of rightwing or ‘alt-right’ anti-Semitism associated with the Trump campaign is concerning. I would hope that particular element of Trump’s support would disqualify him for any American Jew.” New York media consultant Carol Bronze said: “There was never any question for me, it had to be Hillary. She’s the only sensible nominee. She’s conducted herself with dignity and intelligence, as a respected statesperson.” When asked about the prospect of a President Trump, Bronze asks: “How can you believe in a country that elects probably the worst candidate America has ever seen in Trump? It would reflect how deeply the US is out of touch with everything that matters. If Trump gets elected, I’ll arrange to meet my US relatives in Israel or the UK, rather than popping back. It won’t feel like ‘home’ again until many years after his reign of terror.” For Heidi Schwartz, 55, a Philadelphia-born content editor at Jewish Care in London, the bigger issues are corporate influence on politics, gun control, employment, education, health and the

Photos of them in their yellow tops, striped tights and capes quickly took off online – with 80,000 hits in a matter of hours. The girls even created their own logo: a glittery ‘JM’, which stands for JewishMuslim. Casey’s father Jeff, who helped the girls coin the phrase ‘Juslim’ during a car ride, said: “I’ve rarely been more proud, truly.”

The annual memorial ceremony to mark the assassination of late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin has been scrapped owing to lack of funding. Organisers announced it will not be held for the first time since Rabin was murdered 21 years ago. Although the artists and other celebrities who participate in the memorial appear for free, funds are needed to cover expenses such as security.

environment. Schwartz, a fan of left-wing Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders and now a “reluctant Clinton supporter,” says she is “embarrassed by what has happened to the country” and that Trump is “totally unqualified for the office”, but understands his support. “People are angry,” she says.

“They want someone who is not part of the mainstream. I completely understand that, but Trump is not the answer. “He has no idea how government works, only how to get around it. He is not in this for America or the American people. He is in it entirely for himself, his empire and his own ego.”

Ugly infatuation Another British university event has been disrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters chanting to silence an Israeli speaker. This week saw Universities UK and the National Union of Students defer responsibility to the host venue University College London (UCL), which is investigating. Next week will see it all but forgotten. That’s nowhere near good enough. UCL must be held fully accountable to ensure it takes firm, swift and appropriate action. Of course, universities should – must – facilitate free expression and free exchange of ideas, including views some find repugnant. One such view is that Israel acts illegally and discriminates against Palestinians. This is not a “radical” view held by half-a-dozen online neo-Nazis. It is a broader view, alongside another mainstream view (our view) which is that Israeli policy is designed to protect Israelis, and that Israel acts accordingly. Both views can be genuinely-held, and it is only by bringing Israeli speakers to the UK, listening to them and learning from them that we understand the reality of life in the Middle East’s only free society. To not do so is to be wilfully ignorant, and that is the only indefensible position we know of. But all this is to assume that these views can be heard without threat or aggression, without Jewish students having to run the gauntlet of an angry mob telling them they’re terrorists. Jewish parents worried about their sons and daughters have long known that campuses are hotbeds of student politics, but Israel-Palestine at times seems to be today’s one and only infatuation. Universities have been late to recognise this, and to realise that – while protests are fine – safety must be the priority. Jews and/or Israelis will not be driven underground, and stand ready to engage. But this should be with measured words, not raised voices and pointed fingers.

LESSONS FROM THE 1930S REFUGEE CRISIS What would British people have said in the late 1930s if Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany had refused asylum in France, Holland, Argentina Kenya or India, but had insisted on coming only to the UK? As for children, there was no government funding in the UK

for the kindertransport. Unaccompanied Jewish children were allowed into the UK (in limited numbers) only if UK foster parents undertook to pay for all their needs. M Jay NW11

Rosyln Pine (Letters, 20 October) is greatly mistaken to assert we may criticise Israel only if we actually live there. Because we are affected directly by Israel’s actions, we all have a stake in Israeli politics, like it or not. There is a reason our schools and synagogues resemble fortified prisons. Ms Pines’ Israel activism may not at present “undermine the democratic will of the Israeli electorate”, but that is only because she shares the views and aims of the ruling party. Did she stay silent when the Oslo accords were being ratified? How would she comport herself if the left wing took power and began relinquishing the territories

and Jerusalem? It would no doubt trigger a flurry of “dishonourable” letters by Finchley’s loyal Zionist. She expects citizens of Israel begrudgingly to accept the will of the majority, yet she, as a citizen of Britain, does not flinch from dissenting publicly from our own government’s view regarding the illegality of settlements. Instead of holding our Foreign Office in contempt, she should consider moving to the country whose interests she really has at heart. Jews in this country are British, not Israeli, and, like the anti-Semites among us, she must learn to stop conflating the two. Joseph Cohen Edgware

Editorial comment and letters

Just stop whingeing I was born in London but have spent most of my adult life in Israel. I returned to the UK due to family obligations and it astounds me to find once-feisty English Jews continually whining about anti-Semitism. Where is the Cable Street spirit? Consider the black population. Any racism, anti-black treatment or prejudice is dealt with speedily by direct action. Remember the Tottenham riots? Today, Tottenham is a much better area for its black citizens. Proof direct action brings results. Too many mealy-mouthed, whingeing AngloJews are afraid to say “Boo” in case

they light the fires of anti-Semitism. These foolish people don’t realise how they are seen as cowards and easy targets for those who hate us.

It is surprising with so many articles dedicated to anti-Semitism you should seek to describe a Jewish person so divisively in a story that had nothing to do with religious beliefs – unless you are trying to make a point.

I was listening recently to a programme on religions which was broadcast on the BBC World Service. I was shocked but perhaps not surprised when the presenter volunteered the information that “Of course Jesus spoke Aramaic and Arabic’’. Arabic? Really? The Bible of course was written in Aramaic and Arabic and the Hebrew language? Oh yes, that was born in 1948! Was the presenter just ignorant of history or just another deliberate denier of Jewish history? As far as I know, nobody corrected him – not the BBC editors nor any representatives of the church. Are these people too timid to speak out?

AN UNNECESSARY PREFIX You recently ran two stories depicting Jewish people. One you described as a “Jewish special-needs teacher” which was quite correct. Underneath, you described the person involved in an accident as “an Orthodox jeweller”. What does the prefix “Orthodox” add or in any way help the story or the reader?

ARE THESE PEOPLE JUST TOO AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT?

MAKE IT REAL, PEOPLE The ‘Kumbaya’ model of interfaith is, quite rightly, slammed by Fiyaz Mughal (Jewish News, 20 October) as interfaith leaders peering into iPhones together. Involving leaders does make interfaith more ‘kosher’, but the only way forward is through real people doing real things together to break down prejudice and hatred, which are thriving in uncharted post-Brexit Britain. With Mitzvah Day four weeks away, I urge everyone, not just leaders, to contact their local churches, mosques, temples or gudwara to share not just the social-action project itself but, ultimately, the challenges facing society today.

Opinion

Israel is riddled with high-profile sex pests OPINION: JENNI FRAZER

A

s we enter the dying days of the US presidential race it is instructive to look at an unexpected side- effect of the allegations of sexual misconduct committed by the Republican nominee, Donald Trump. It’s been a matter of record for years that Israeli society is riddled with the sort of misogynist attitudes apparently held by Trump, that assumption that by virtue of being a man, that person can have anything — or anyone —he wants. Two of the most egregious examples: Moshe Dayan and the former president, Moshe Katzav. Dayan could never have got away with his behaviour in today’s climate; Katzav is serving seven years for rape and sexual harassment. It’s not confined, this sort of thing, to Israeli society. Jewish community life was riddled with it when I was a young reporter. One man, now long dead, actually chased

me round a couch in his office; another, now disgraced for a different kind of unethical behaviour, took exception to something I had written and complained to my editor that I had made advances towards him. I will be forever grateful to that editor for treating the approach with the contempt it deserved. Young women, when I was starting out, didn’t have many options about confronting these attitudes. As the Savile victims will confirm, most women had to grin and bear it — or take themselves out of harm’s way wherever possible. But many men continue to believe they can behave with impunity, as the depressing tale of Danielle Berrin and the Israeli journalist Ari Shavit illustrates. Berrin, who is, not to put too fine a point on it, strikingly gorgeous, waited for two and a half years to take her revenge on Shavit, who, she says, sexually assaulted her when she went to interview him for the Los Angeles Jewish Journal while he was in America publicising his critically acclaimed book, My Promised

ARI SHAVIT IS NOW RUINED – ALL HIS MORAL AUTHORITY AND CREDIBILITY ARE GONE

Land. In her damning cover story, Berrin recounts how she went to an unnamed Israeli journalist’s hotel at 10pm to get her interview. Instead, things went very pear-shaped: the Israeli lunged and grabbed at her, claimed that he and his wife had “an arrangement” and speculated on what might happen if Berrin became his mistress. Five minutes after publication, the whole of Israel had figured out that the grabber was Ari Shavit, the “moral voice” of the peace

camp, whose articulate denunciation of the right-wing has made a whole slew of society feel better about itself. In short order, Shavit outed himself and apologised to Berrin for what he characterised as “flirtation”, which I imagine is what he told himself (and possibly his wife) to make himself feel better. Berrin doesn’t buy his apology. Three days later and another American Jewish woman, this time anonymously, complained that Shavit had hit on her. She was 26 at the time; Shavit is 58. Now he has had to resign from Ha’aretz, where he has been a long-time columnist and a member of its editorial board, and from Israel’s Channel 10 TV, where he presents a political show. Thus Shavit is, effectively, ruined, though he has only himself to blame. All moral authority and credibility are gone. Full disclosure: I interviewed Shavit and he was a perfect gentleman. Lucky me, huh?

The ‘hate’ is among us once again – and it’s terrifying OPINION: SAMANTHA SIMMONDS

JOURNALIST & TV PRESENTER

W

hen I was young my parents taught me the word ‘hate’ is a very strong word and should not be used lightly. Those words always stuck with me and they are words I now repeat to my children. But the reality is my children are growing up in a world where they will learn the word ‘hate’ could be applied to them – because of their religion. The Holocaust ended just 27 years before I was born. But growing up in Leeds the Shoah and pernicious anti-Semitism that accompanied it was history – the history of the Jewish people and a small part of my own family’s past. My great aunt Ruth’s family had hosted kindertransport children in Bradford. Great uncle Heinz fled Nazi Czechoslovakia and eventually ended up in

MY OLDEST CHILD DOESN’T YET KNOW ANTI-SEMITISM, BUT IT WON’T BE LONG BEFORE HE LOSES HIS INNOCENCE

Yorkshire. The terrible history of our people becomes for many of us, myself included, part of our DNA. But what do we say to our children now that it’s not just history? Of course there has always been antiSemitism. However ,in my lifetime it has never been at this level and on the rise. I don’t want to be alarmist – I’m not predicting or anticipating a resurgence of fascism the likes of which nearly destroyed the Jewish people.

But the hate is among us and it frightens me. My oldest child is only eight and doesn’t yet know about anti-Semitism. But it won’t be long before he loses his innocence. As he attends a Jewish school he will be learning about this hatred – I suspect almost subliminally. He hasn’t asked me yet why there are four security guards at the gates. But he will. He hasn’t asked me about why children at Jewish schools have to practice hiding under their desks or running inside if there is a lock down – but he will. And what will I say? Will I tell him that anti-Semitic incidents in London rose by 62 percent between the first six months of 2015 and 2016? Will I tell him that a recent survey found one-in-10 voters believe Jewish people have too much influence in the UK? Will I tell him that last week a speaker at a parliamentary event compared Israel to Islamic State and suggested Jews were to

blame for the Holocaust? Will I tell him the Archbishop of Canterbury believes the “virus” of antiSemitism is “deeply entrenched “ in British society? It’s one thing growing up with antiSemitism as part of your cultural and family history – but what will it mean growing up with it very much in your present. What impact will it have on my children? Will they grow up in fear? Will they grow up feeling ostracised, threatened and unwelcome, becoming ever more segregated from the rest of society? Perhaps it won’t mean any of these things. Perhaps I hope this is all a blip and I am worrying for no good reason. But the worry fills me alternately with fear and with sadness. Fear of course of any future attacks on our community and sadness that this is the reality for Jewish children – my children – growing up in 21st-century Britain. I teach my children to treat everyone with equal respect and tolerance and that no one should be pre-judged by their looks or beliefs.

Opinion

For Tonge, anti-Semitism is hate with good reason DAVID HIRSH

FOUNDER OF ENGAGE – CAMPAIGN AGAINST ACADEMIC BOYCOTTS OF ISRAEL

F

ormer Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Jenny Tonge chaired an event in the House of Lords last week in favour of a boycott of Israel. A man made a speech from the floor saying that it was a Jewish boycott of Germany which had “antagonised Hitler over the edge to want to systematically kill Jews wherever he could find them”. The man was saying that Zionist Jews, and their campaign against Nazi Germany, were responsible for causing the Holocaust. Jenny Tonge sat respectfully through this speech and thanked the man warmly. It was as if she had heard only one word that he had said, and that was the word “boycott”. She replied by saying that the campaign for a boycott of Israel is “very, very important”, but she said nothing about his anti-Semitic argument. The whole episode was followed by warm applause from around the room.

All the evidence over the past 10 years shows that the boycott campaign – the campaign to single out only Israel for exclusion from the human community – brings with it anti-Semitic rhetoric and it fosters a culture of tolerance for anti-Semitism. Jenny Tonge herself made a similar point last week in response to the Home Affairs Select Committee report on anti-Semitism. She wrote that it is difficult to believe that the rise in antiSemitism could be explained by people hating Jews for no reason. She wrote that anti-Semitism is on the rise because of the “disgust among the general public” for “the way the government of Israel treats Palestinians”. For her, anti-Semitism is not a case of hating Jews for no reason; it is hating Jews for good reasons. And she went on to indulge in anti-Semitic conspiracy theory herself, saying that antiSemitism was also caused by people’s disgust at the way Israel “manipulates the USA and ourselves” – as though little Israel was stronger than the great western powers, and also

disgracefully manipulative. You can read the full text of Tonge’s letter on her own Facebook page. At the Liberal Democrat party conference in September 2006, she said: ‘The pro-Israeli lobby has got its grips on the western world.” She went on to explain exactly what sort of grips she was referring to: “Its financial grips.” Tonge employed the ostensibly anti-racist language of the “pro-Israel lobby” to articulate anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. Both major political parties in Britain are currently in crisis. Labour is moving away from democratic and rational politics into a populism in which left-wing anti-Semitism is becoming more and more prominent. For their part, the Conservatives are moving away from

democratic and rational politics into a xenophobic populism. It is a change in direction that threatens to harm the economy of the UK and to bring down the democratic institutions by which Europe has kept the peace since the fall of Nazism and communism. The Liberal Democrats, who are in the position of being seen as a separate force, have the opportunity to hold the democratic and rational centre of UK politics. It is to the party’s credit that it finally moved to suspend Tonge last week, a decision that prompted her to quit the party. But as long as anti-Zionist anti-Semitism is tolerated within its organisation, it will be considered by many to be little more than a Corbyn-lite party.

I have two children, Sheila and David, and four grandchildren. What is your happiest memory? Name: Rosalie Naydorf Date of birth: 05/10/1912 Place of birth: Paris Where do you live? How long have you lived there? Where did you live before?

I currently live in Nightingale House, and have been there since April 2006. Before that, I was in Putney.

When my son David, who was very sick, made a great recovery. What do you consider to be your greatest/proudest achievements?

That my children turned out okay and are good people. Who are your heroes of today and yesteryear?

I was a civil servant in the Income Tax Department.

Lily H Montagu, who was a founder member of Liberal Judaism and established the West Central Jewish Girls’ Club in the 19th century – she helped so many girls to develop themselves and put them on the right path.

To see my children remain healthy and content with life.

It was very difficult times growing up because we were so short of money, but if I could live my life again, I would talk and mix with many different kinds of people – you can learn a lot from listening to people. Do today’s young people have it easy compared to when you were growing up?

Yes, I lived in the West End off Berwick Street in one room and would walk a mile home to save a penny. If you could offer a piece of advice to today’s youngsters, what would it be?

Have self -respect and never let yourself down – you should always keep your dignity.

It all depends on where you are.

The Holocaust – it affected my family; I had an aunt in one of the camps and my husband had also been taken prisoner of war and sent to Siberia. The secret to a long life is ….

That Friday feeling! Join Jewish News and ShabbatUK in marking the Great Friday Night Light on 11 November, which will see around 50,000 candlesticks distributed across the country to encourage people to bring in Shabbat together. We asked our readers to tell us what lighting candles means to them: CHIEF RABBI EPHRAIM MIRVIS:

“Separation from mundane work and empty distraction is necessary to reinvigorate one’s soul; to find space for meaningful engagement with our friends and families in a noisy world of media and communications which constantly demand our attention. “Shabbat bonds families together, it bonds communities together and it reminds us that we must have control over our environments and not the other way around.”

RABBI BENTZI SUDAK, CEO, CHABAD LUBAVITCH UK:

REBBETZIN ABI KURZER, EDGWARE UNITED SYNAGOGUE:

RABBI ALAN GARBER, SHENLEY UNITED SYNAGOGUE:

DANIEL EDER, CONTENT MANAGER, STANMORE:

“The holiness of Shabbat is ushered in especially by the Jewish woman through her lighting of the Shabbat candles. Each light adds another element of holiness and peace to one’s home and, collectively, to the entire world. This symbolises how each one of us plays a crucial and irreplaceable role in God’s world, bringing it to its perfection.”

“Lighting Shabbat candles is a sigh of relief – it is knowing I can do no more and a symbol of my time just to be. It focuses me to stop running around and get on the floor to play hungry hippos with my three-year-old. It is warmth, it is light, it is the start of my quality time with Hashem, my family and myself.”

“The significance of the Shabbat candles for me is moving towards a sense of calm, peace and purpose. They signal a destination in closeness to family, community and Hashem.”

“Shabbat is the one time of the week to stop, pause everyday stresses and reflect on the past week. Lighting Shabbat candles starts this process, bringing light into our lives, allowing an opportunity to pray for good health and blessings. Growing up watching my mother light shabbat candles every week, for me, it’s not Shabbat without lighting the candles.”

REBBETZIN JOANNE DOVE, SEED:

ALEX FENTON, YOUTH DIRECTOR, COCKFOSTERS & NORTH SOUTHGATE AND MUSWELL HILL SYNAGOGUES:

“Candle-lighting time is a special time I look forward to. At that moment when I light the first of my 10 candles, a custom of lighting an extra candle for each child, I leave behind the rush, the cooking, the mobile phone and the front door, and all goes quiet for a short while. There is an immediate change of the week going into Shabbat and, as I kindle each light, a special prayer goes to our children, to our home, to our extended family and to all the Jewish people trusting that they will be looked after by the One above.”

“Shabbat candle lighting is a special time for me, because it means that I am disconnecting from the physical world to reconnect to the spiritual world.”

 Visit shabbatuk.org/the-great -friday-night-light to see how you can get involved

REBBETZIN ILANA EPSTEIN OF COCKFOSTERS & NORTH SOUTHGATE SYNAGOGUE: “When I light the Shabbat candles each Friday, the work week falls away and, for 25 hours, the world outside is put on hold and a sense of inner peace lights up my home, family and community.”

MADELINE GOTTLIEB, PUBLISHER, HGS: “When I light my Shabbat candles, I savour the feeling of switching off from the daily bustle of life. Cooking and preparations are over. I smile and look forward to precious time with my family and friends.”

ANTHONY RENTON, ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE, HGS: “Lighting candles for Shabbat is special because it signifies the separation from the working week to a time of self-reflection and time to spend with family and my community.”

EMMA ALLWEIS, TEACHER, BOREHAMWOOD: “Lighting Shabbat candles signals the opportunity to switch off from the daily grind of the working week and a chance to spend family time with my husband and two lovely daughters.”

Lifestyle / Radio reflections

Now here’s a thought... With more than six million listeners, BBC Radio 2’s Pause For Thought provides a place to discuss modern life. Here, we publish three reflections from a new book on the broadcast CHIEF RABBI EPHRAIM MIRVIS BROADCAST 27 NOVEMBER 2013 One of my favourite songs is Who Am I? from Les Misérables. For the ex-convict Jean Valjean, the song is a question of personal identity. His answer, ‘24601’, reflects the limitations that others have placed upon him. Like most people, when I first meet somebody, my instinct is to find a personal connection. So, who am I? I am a husband, son, brother, father and grandfather. I was born in South Africa. I have lived in Israel, Ireland and now the United Kingdom. I am Jewish and I support Tottenham Hotspur. These multiple aspects of my identity provide a basis on which to find common ground with others and to begin to establish meaningful connections. Tonight, we Jewish people around the world will light a candle for the first night of Chanukah, which celebrates identity and belonging. In doing so, we will remember how, nearly 2,200 years ago, the Greek Empire sought to force the Jews of ancient Israel to give up their faith and long-held traditions. In a small outpost in the Holy Land, a band of Jews led by Judah Maccabee wrote themselves into history by defeating the Greek armies — at least temporarily. Greater than their military defeat, though, was what they were fighting for: the right to determine their own identity and to give their own answer to the question “Who am I?” On Chanukah, we reflect on how we define ourselves and the value of shared identity. Whether as part of a family, a community or a nation, we each have multiple and overlapping identities at our core. This complex tapestry is hugely significant, adding richness and meaning to our lives; and the more identities we share, the more we find we have in common. However, at the same time there is strength in diversity. Attempts to impose one’s identity on others is counter-productive. If, as individuals, we can appreciate the equal value of those who share our identity and those who don’t, then our combined future will be all the brighter. So, who am I? Just like you, I’m someone who delights in what we share and who takes great pleasure in what makes us unique.

Pause For Thought is available now from Watkins Publishing, priced £12.99

RABBI BARONESS JULIA NEUBERGER, SENIOR RABBI TO THE WEST LONDON SYNAGOGUE BROADCAST 27 APRIL 2015 During the depths of winter, I always bring in the amaryllis bulbs that have been languishing outside on the windowsill since last year, clean their pots and give them a bit of water and fertiliser. Just this last week, they’ve been rewarding me with the most spectacular display of salmon-pink blooms, and they make me smile as I walk into my kitchen. The bulbs

IF WE ARE ABLE TO APPRECIATE THE EQUAL VALUE OF THOSE WHO SHARE OUR IDENTITY AND THOSE WHO DON’T, OUR COMBINED FUTURE WILL BE ALL THE BRIGHTER were given to me some seven or eight years ago, and yet back they come every year. My flowers give me enormous pleasure. My children tell me, as I talk to them about my few gardening successes: “Mum, you’re just getting old.” But it’s not just an older person’s pleasure. The emphasis on planting gardens goes back to the Bible. The prophet Jeremiah told the Israelite exiles in Babylon to “Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce.” The prophet Isaiah used the metaphor of a vineyard that God had nurtured but which failed to reward its owner with lavish grapes. Faced with only wild, bitter fruit, the owner threatened to uproot the vineyard. King Ahab took Naboth’s vineyard and used it as a vegetable garden, even though Naboth had refused to sell it. Gardens are everywhere in the Bible and ancient literature. They’re deeply rooted in our way of thinking, whether we’re young or old. And at this time of year they make us all smile, with the feeling that everything is going to be plentiful once again. I think we should remind ourselves to delight in burgeoning nature, for we need that sense of renewal each year. It gives us hope and a cause for gratitude, which we don’t acknowledge often enough. My flowering bulbs make me say thank you. And each year, as everything

starts flowering once again, I am just grateful to be alive. We could all share that gratitude, and perhaps even show it, by gardening more, giving each other more plants and celebrating life. RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS RABBI AND COMMUNITY EDUCATOR AT THE MOVEMENT FOR REFORM JUDAISM BROADCAST 13 MARCH 2015 I remember very clearly one of the first times my mum taught me something that would remain with me for life. I was seven years old and my mum was a supply teacher assigned to my form. As my sister had an inset day from her school, she came with her. That afternoon one of my classmates asked me what was wrong with my sister. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know there was anything wrong with her. She was just my sister. After some tears, when we were safely home, I asked my mum the same question: what WAS wrong with my sister? Rather than her trying to explain it to me, she asked my sister to tell me. And Sara took up the challenge and explained that when she was born, the water travelling around her head had become stuck, causing some brain damage and making her head misshapen — something my classmate had obviously spotted rather quicker than me. My mum gave my sister the dignity of speaking herself, rather than talking about it without her as if it were a bad thing or a secret. Sara could own her challenges and I knew I could speak directly to her about them. This episode has repeatedly reminded me to allow people the dignity of speaking for themselves rather than speaking about them or around them. Even when we might assume people don’t have the ability to speak for themselves or might be uncomfortable doing so, we actually give them a huge gift when we invite them to own their story and tell it themselves.

Lifestyle / Electric bike menace

Riding into danger A father is hoping his Facebook campaign against the ‘growing menace’ of electric bikes in Israel will finally persuade the authorities to take urgent action, writes Lisa Sanders

I

sraeli parents are at last waking up to the dangers of electric bicycles and scooters, thanks to a father’s furious post on Facebook addressed to “the morons whose child I nearly murdered this morning”. Raziel Peer, from Jerusalem, was collecting his eight-year-old son from school. “Suddenly there was a boy aged eight or nine that just came straight out in front of me, without stopping or looking. And without a helmet… “My own son was sitting in the car with me. He’s the same age. I can still hear his scream – Abbaaaa! Lo! [Dad! No!]” Afterwards, says Peer, the little boy he hit simply ran off, leaving his bike laying crushed on the road. “As a father, it made me so furious,” Peer told Israel’s Channel Two TV. In his post, which garnered 52,000 “likes” he rages against the parents of the young cyclist: “Did your son bring children into the world? Did he get his degree after becoming an outstanding officer in the army? No! ..What were you two fools thinking before you sent him out into my path?” Electrically-assisted bikes are growing in popularity across Europe. Globally, 35 million “E-bikes” were sold in 2015. In the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, they are marketed as an

Left, Raziel Peer; right, two girls, one on the phone, riding an electric bike in Netanya

environmentally-friendly way to allow everyone to enjoy cycling, irrespective of age or fitness level. In Israel, however, they have been embraced by a much younger clientele. Israeli children commonly travel to and from school independently, on foot or by bike. The E-bikes have fast become a must-have accessory for children and teenagers, and a deadly danger on

roads and pavements. The bikes are designed to reach a top speed of 25 kilometres an hour (15.5 mph), but many Israeli teens are adapting the motors to go much faster than this. They zip silently along roads and pavements, often with two or even three riders piled on to the seat. Despite E-bikes being involved in hundreds of traffic accidents each year, the government has been slow to legislate and to enforce the rules. Back in 2014, a lowest age limit of 14 was set by the Ministry of Transport. In mid-2016, this was raised to 16. Bikes are not to be ridden on the pavements,

and each one must have a horn or a bell, lights and reflectors. In practice, however, these rules are simply not being enforced. In two separate incidents in Beersheva, three teenagers were left severely injured and one was killed as a result of riding electric bikes in the city in the dark, reportedly without lights or helmets. Shmuel Abuav, director general of Or Yarok (Green Light), the road safety organisation, says: “Electric bicycles have been proven as life-threatening to both cyclists and other road-users. Accordingly, the police and local authorities have a responsibility to take care of full enforcement of regulations and not to allow children to go on this dangerous tool.” Senior doctors at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv have published their own campaign to try to get the message across. “Parents must understand that you don’t give an 11-year-old an electric bicycle because of peer pressure,” says Dr. Oren Tavor, head of Paediatric Orthopaedics. “It’s a weapon.” Every week, according to the orthopaedic doctors, they are carrying out operations on riders of electric bikes, as well as treating those who have been knocked down by the machines. In Jerusalem, Raziel Peer hopes that his outburst will finally have brought the message home to parents not to buy these expensive gadgets for their children. “I got a lot of reactions from parents who said they’re taking away electric scooters and bikes from their kids,” he said. “And I got a call from a mother whose son is still in hospital. “This is the reality. I think parents aren’t doing enough to say no to their children. And this is the result.”

Oven-roasted pumpkin and chestnuts

Denise Phillips

PREPARATION TIME 15 MINS

This is a colourful side dish that adds texture to a roast dinner. When pumpkin is not in season substitute with butternut squash and for a short cut, buy ready peeled, vacuum packed chestnuts. Unlike other nuts and seeds, chestnuts are relatively low in calories. They contain less fat, but are rich in minerals, vitamins and nutrients that benefit health. They are chiefly made of starch rather than fat, similar to sweet potatoes, sweet corn and plantain. To cook fresh chestnuts, boil and then simmer for 20 minutes. Leave to cool and then peel. This method is best if you are mashing them as they will tend to fall apart. Alternatively, roast them at 200°C/ 400°F for 20 minutes; make cuts horizontally or an ‘x’ along the side, otherwise they can potentially explode from internal pressure if not pierced!

The latest buzz about HONEY G! We catch up on what the Jewish answer to Snoop Dogg and Kanye West – real name Anna Georgette Gilford – has been up to on the latest X Factor show!

THE THEME: What else could the “randomly chosen” theme be other than Fright Night (in the run up to Halloween)? THE SONG: Honey G shunned ghouls, ghosts and werewolves and opted instead for something truly out of this world with her cover of Men In Black. THE LOOK: The performer explored her dark side with a black leather baseball cap, studded black jacket and cool holographic pumps, as well as the obligatory shades and glittering dollar sign medallion.

THE BLUNDER: Talking to the camera before her performance, Honey G confessed she had been working hard to “learn her ad-libs”. Viewers were quick to pick up on her mistake. One wrote: “When you have to ‘learn an ad lib’ then it’s not an ad lib. Duh! #HoneyG #XFactor. Another tweeted: “Learning all the ad-libs. That’s literally the opposite of an ad-lib.” LOOK WHO’S TALKING RAP: From one white rapper to another, Professor Green waded into the debate by saying Honey G was “taking the mickey out of rap”.

THE RAZZMATAZZ: Backing dancers dressed as MIBs, pyrotechnics, smoke machines and laser lights – plus flying saucers! What more could the audience possibly ask for?

THE VERDICT: Viewers were quick to question again why Honey G has been voted through while Gifty had to exit the competition. One wrote: “After the #brexit vote I knew the #UK was stupid, but keeping #HoneyG confirms it.

WHAT DID THE JUDGES THINK? Sharon and Louis leapt to their feet, Nicole did a little celebratory dance while Simon gushed: “G stands for the greatest.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Boyband vs Girlband is the theme. Could It Be Magic for Honey G’s fifth week in the talent show, or will it be a case of Who Do You Think You Are?

The Wight stuff Jenni Frazer finds much to enjoy on a ‘bijou island paradise’ conveniently close to home

Main picture: Part of the Isle of Wight’s rugged coastline, a must-see along with the Steam Railway’s historic rolling stock; below, Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s summer palace and the scene of her death

E

ven the shortest trip to the Isle of Wight gives a holiday atmosphere, as drivers and foot passengers alike throng one of the majestic Red Funnel ferries for the quick 45-minute trip from Southampton to East Cowes. Make sure you nip up straight away to the top deck, to enjoy the sea breezes and the astonishing range of shipping in the Solent — we saw one of the huge Princess Line cruise ships, complete with hundreds of waving passengers — and, in complete contrast, a fishing boat surrounded by thousands of hungry gulls as the lone sailor threw fish heads into the sea. If, like us, you are staying on the east coast, your first challenge on leaving the ferry will be arguing with the satnav as it directs you to “get on the ferry”. In this case, the satnav is right. You are being directed to the tiny but efficient chain ferry, built in 1859, which links one part of Cowes to the other across the River Medina. If you don’t use the chain ferry, which takes you over in a rapid 15 minutes, you instead face a 10-mile trip to the island’s centre and capital, Newport, before making your way to the coast. You are treading, of course, in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, whose summer palace, Osborne House, made the island a must-visit tourist destination from the 1880s onwards. But the monarch, who died at Osborne House, wasn’t the first to discover the pleasures of this bijou island paradise, as a Roman villa archaeological site testifies. Henry VIII fortified the island and Charles I

THE YEAR-ROUND MICRO-CLIMATE OFFERS BETTER WEATHER THAN ON THE MAINLAND

was imprisoned there. The poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, had a holiday home and, to his wife’s great annoyance, used to sneak out to the back garden and into the house of pioneer photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, great-aunt of the novelist Virginia Woolf, where he would pose for pictures in her garden. Cameron’s house, Dimbola Lodge, is now a photography museum at Freshwater Bay, and well worth a visit. The island’s main income comes from tourism, no surprise given that the place has a year-round micro-climate that offers reassuringly better weather than on the mainland. In the summer, the Isle of Wight is sunnier than most parts of the UK, while in some years there is rarely snow in the winter and only a few days of hard frost. So many of the island’s attractions, from the Dinosaur Activity Centre to the Alpaca Farm, are aimed at children, not forgetting the fabulous slew of bucket-and-spade beaches. It’s easy to overlook guilty pleasures such as the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. But the lovingly recreated stations and puffing billy trains have the power to charm everyone, young and old, and the railway is truly not to be missed. The deeply-patient station staff, heroic in their waistcoats and red-banded caps, seem happy to pose for endless pictures, as is the engineer, who deftly turns round the engine at the end of the line.

Restored train carriages from Victorian and Edwardian times whisk oldies back to their childhoods and children are lost in wonder. Havenstreet, the central station, decorated with evocative signage, has a lovely train museum and what tastes like real old-fashioned ice cream. Food is also a large part of this holiday destination. Besides the ice-cream — the late film director, Anthony Minghella, came from the family of Isle of Wight ice-cream makers — the island is famous for apricots, tomatoes, delicious dairy produce, glorious fresh eggs, super tart apple juices and ciders, edible lavender and, of course, fabulous garlic. The owners of the Garlic Farm in Newchurch have gone in for the foodie experience in a big way, offering products you never knew could have garlic in them, from the very mildest to the truly fierce Vampire jars.

When they warn you about the latter by the way, do take them seriously and not as an invitation to show how tough you are. Products such as roast garlic jam are divine for putting on a slowly-roasted chicken, and garlic mayo will pep up the most tired of salads. Driving round Wight is easy. It’s almost impossible to get lost and everything is well signposted, although it is slightly unnerving to emerge from a single-track B-road covered in misty foliage, to drive into a suburban street full of neat houses. But you get used to it. There is a Reform Jewish community on the island at Wroxall, looked after by the Bournemouth Reform Congregation. Here on the Isle of Wight your mission is simple: relinquish the day-to-day responsibilities, escape to the island, and you can’t fail to have a good time.

WHERE TO STAY... Jenni Frazer travelled with Red Funnel Isle of Wight Ferries. Red Funnel offers day-return crossings for foot passengers from £9.40 and short-break return vehicle crossings from £51, together with ferry-inclusive holiday accommodation, attraction tickets, festival and event tickets and activity packages for visitors to the Isle of Wight. Sedra: Noah, Torah For Today / Orthodox Judaism

SEDRA - Noah

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about: Political mudslinging

RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF The second sedra of the Torah opens with a description of the corruption of mankind. Rashi explains this moral degradation expressed itself through the perversion of interpersonal relationships. The world becomes filled with selfish people intent on using others for their personal and financial gratification. As a result, Hashem hit the “restore factory settings” button on the world, leaving Noah and his family to create the prototype version 2.0. The ark was far more than a floating zoo. He and his family had to work selflessly for a year to sustain the animals. The rabbis explain he was punished for being late with the lion’s food; had the lion died, that would have been the end of the lion kingdom. The sin of selfishness is rectified with unlimited giving of self to create a healthier world order. The rabbis teach us the new world order was so obsessed by the construction they would be more upset about the loss of a brick than the death of a worker. The sedra that starts with the primacy of the individual changes direction to emphasise importance of the collective, but neither seems to hit the mark. Our sedra therefore concludes by introducing a new character, Abraham, a revolutionary who seeks to introduce a new social order, one based on “keeping the way of Hashem, doing charity and justice” (Bereishit 18:19). Abraham dedicates his life to humanity and, in doing so, fulfils his potential. Abraham’s revolution is enduring as it begins with the genuine fulfilment of self on the path to selfless giving to others.

 Naftali Schiff is CEO of Jewish Futures Trust

RABBI ARIEL ABEL Recent weeks have seen the TrumpClinton debate descend into insults on character and professional practice. What is the Torah view on mudslinging? The Torah forbids three types of slander: where a rumour is true, untrue or causes hatred or pain. Mudslinging almost always causes pain. Painful words are compared in Proverbs as arrows, shot carelessly by a mocker who does not care if he insults his victim. There can be a mitigating circumstance. Where mudslinging is a sport or a game show, it could be argued no real harm is intended and the theatrics are harmless. However, as with bullying, it is hard to tell what is really going on in someone’s

65 BRITISH AND 121 AMERICAN POLITICIANS COMMITTED SUICIDE

mind. In British politics, uncomplimentary words are traded liberally across the house floor. Should the “thin skull” rule apply? Should we take the victim as we find him, and rule out any form of rudeness out of political debate? Or can we subscribe to more objective standards of what is admissible? A politician without thick skin is in certain danger of mental ill health. James Paul, an early 19th century Scottish MP and son of a tailor, took on Westminster and failed to gain a seat. He was mocked in the cartoon press for being a tailor’s son. He lost two elections. The pressure deranged him and he committed suicide, as have 65 British and 121 American politicians in modern history. When Jacob met his father-in-law Laban after fleeing his home, they exchanged angry words over the accusation Jacob had stolen his idols. Beyond this, they made a pact never to harm each other and formally made peace. This agreement prevented either from holding a grudge against the other in the future. The historic mudslinging between Samaritans and Jews did not serve either

camp. The Jews were mostly exiled from the Holy Land for almost 2,000 years and the Samaritans reduced to fewer than 800 today. Interfaith relations and educating about the “other” is crucial to the stability of society. Blame culture is particularly dangerous for communal well-being. If we see our leaders tearing each other apart instead of debating the real issues in a dignified way, the danger is they are setting us up for societal failure. Rhetoric about refugees and foreigners has imperilled further the fragile state of affairs in Britain. Let us hope the postBrexit reality is not worsened by an American political outcome that will polarise society even further.

Progressive Judaism / Jewish Hero, Progressively Speaking

Jewish Hero

Progressively Speaking

Zoe Jacobs, RSY-Netzer community youth worker, chooses Daniel Radcliffe I get it – he’s no Theodore Herzl, Moses or Rabbi Akiva. But Daniel Radcliffe has defied expectations, and that’s pretty great you-can-do-ittoo kind of heroism. Daniel Radcliffe is clever, funny, eloquent, and incredibly determined. He admits he was a “Christmas tree Jew” at home, but his heritage remains important to him. He identifies as an atheist, but one “very proud” to be Jewish. If Judaism offers a sense of living life to your best ability, respecting others and supporting family, he certainly embodies those ideals. Since Harry Potter, he has secured 19 roles – one every six months. He’s pushed himself into theatre, overcome dyspraxia to star in a musical, and flexed his comic muscles in rom-coms and dark TV comedies. And all the while gently persuading the public,

who might believe the name Daniel Radcliffe will only ever mean Harry Potter, he’s not a one-trick pony. Of course, he also has his flaws and admits to having an alcohol addiction in his early 20s. What kind of hero is that? Well, a hero who, while battling to be accepted as a serious actor, put his hand up and said: “I went down a dangerous path, and fought my way back out of it. And now I’m telling you about it”. That takes serious bravery.

The last couple of weeks seem miraculous. It was early September when I helped to welcome the 50th teenage refugee to Britain under clause III of the Dublin Agreement, which gives unaccompanied children the right to join family members here. These early arrivals came because of the award-winning work of the charity Safe Passage UK, whose team of lawyers, translators and social workers have done the work the Government should have been doing all along. But now, in the last two weeks, around 300 unaccompanied minors have come to the UK safely and legally, including the first ever under the terms

of the Dubs Amendment to the Immigration Act. What a change! Imagine the joy of a boy who has not seen his brother in 11 years, and now has seen him, hugged him and knows he is safe. Or the uncle welcoming his nephew, who, aside from his wife and children here, is the only family member he has who is still alive. The tabloid press though, in complete disregard for any safeguarding protocol, published full face shots of the first arrivals, making them fodder for hatred and potentially putting family members elsewhere in jeopardy too. To get this far has been a team effort – many in the Jewish community have raised money to support this work and have volunteered and campaigned to-

And we’ve been joined by people of all faiths, and none. Inside Lunar House in Croydon, teams of volunteers from Citizens UK – including Jews, Muslims and Christians – have been acting as accompanying adults for child refugees arriving. It is a rollercoaster. As of last week, with the French government reporting the Calais camp was cleared, a number of unaccompanied minors had not been registered were sleeping rough under the bridge, while others were taken by volunteers to a school. So we must carry on doing all we can to ensure that the British Government acts in a more organised and timely fashion, to offer these children safe passage and keep them out of the hands of traffickers.

Dear Bayla My husband Leo and I live in a council flat in Lambeth. He is in his mid-80s, suffers from Parkinson’s disease and is registered disabled. English is not my mother tongue, so I have difficulty dealing with his forms and paperwork. Leo can no longer write. I used to be very meticulous in keeping everything up-todate, but running around looking after him leaves me with no energy and our personal documents are now a complete mess. Can Paperweight help? Theresa

Dear Theresa What’s first needed is a simple way of identifying and filing incoming post and then dealing with any responses that paperwork demands. We can certainly help you go through Leo’s papers to determine what is important now, what needs to be kept and, just as important, what can be thrown away. Once that is achieved, we can set about assisting you both in completing the whole array of forms that arise from being a council tenant, of pensionable age and registered disabled. Please give us a call and we will arrange for a caseworker to visit you and to assess the priorities.

LESLEY TRENNER CAREER ADVISER, RESOURCE THE JEWISH EMPLOYMENT ADVICE CENTRE See full profile on pages 32-33

Dear Lesley I gave up work to look after my elderly mother. She is now in a care home and I need to return to work. But I feel old and ‘out of the loop’ with out-of-date skills. Where do I start? Brian

Dear Brian First of all you need the right mindset. The UK no longer has an obligatory retirement age and older workers are often sought after to fill skills gaps. Recognise that you have experience, wisdom and, probably, a better work ethic than many younger people. So forget about your age and develop a forward-looking attitude and willingness to learn new things. Next, do a realistic audit of your skills and strengths, including those gained while being a carer, such as people skills, persistence, planning and organising. Start updating rusty skills, especially computer-related ones. Then think about the kind of work you want and are best qualified for.

Update your CV, highlighting skills and achievements, rather than listing all your previous employment chronologically. CVs don’t need to include your date of birth. There are many ways to find a job nowadays, mostly online. However, research shows that the best way is through networking, especially in the Jewish community. Talk to as many people as possible, be specific about what you are looking for and focus on your strengths. Go to your first interview looking smart and impress the interviewer with everything you have to offer. Resource has helped many older clients back to work, so that could be a very good place to start.

STEVE WAYNE ESTATE AGENT, BENJAMIN STEVENS ESTATE AGENTS See full profile on pages 32-33

Dear Steve What’s the real impact of Brexit? Is now a good time to buy property? James Dear James In my opinion, Brexit has hit the property market, but perhaps this was needed. What Brexit has really

done is brought a bit of realism into a market that was starting to get out of control. If you are a firsttime buyer, or someone who is moving up the ladder, this is probably the best time to think about moving. For example, you may now only achieve £250,000 on a flat that pre-Brexit you may have achieved £275,000 on. However, that next house up the ladder, which was previously £500,000 may now be £450,000, meaning that both properties have dropped by the same percentage; however when it comes to actual monetary value, you would be better off by £25,000. For first-time buyers, this is also a great time to get onto the ladder, as prices

are now down by around five to seven percent (less than they were before June) and, with interest rates expected to stay low over the next 12-18 months, money is cheap. However, lending criteria may be getting tougher – so if you can get a mortgage, now is a great time to get onto the ladder. My advice to young people is to get onto that ladder as quickly as possible. Once you are on, you can then move again in a few years to something bigger. One of the issues over the past few years is the fact that first-time buyers have had to fight with investors for smaller properties and so, while they are procrastinating, now is your time to buy.

Jewish News has teamed up with Drumond Park, one of the UK’s leading games companies, to give four lucky readers the chance to win a wonderful pair of board games worth more than £50! In the beautifully designed, brand new Pickin’ Chickens game (rrp £19.99, ages four and over) children spin the green pasture and select chicken coops, then add different coloured model chicks to their collection. The ultra-popular, best-selling LOGO picture board game (rrp £32.99, ages 12 to adult) tests how clever you are at recognising famous brands, alongside questions based on hundreds of the UK’s best loved products – from Aero Bubbles, Bird’s Eye, BMW and Chelsea FC to Walkers crisps and Wrigley’s gum. Cat burglars! Smash-and-grab sees Catford sneak two late goals in thrilling 4-4 draw By Andrew Sherwood andrews@thejngroup.com @JewishNewsUK

Catford & Bromley playermanager Jeff Gotch said his side will be fighting for the Division Two title after he saw them score twice in the last five minutes to salvage a 4-4 draw against Temple Fortune. Leading by example, the striker scored a hat-trick, though it was snatching

a draw in the last minute which left him with a smile on his face. Gotch (pictured) said: “I’m pleased with how we responded and finished, although not so pleased with how we performed in the first 70 minutes, but I take a lot of positives out of the game. Trailing 0-1, 1-3 and then 2-4, Danny Yeshua’s last-gasp strike earned them an unlikely point, with Gotch saying: “It wasn’t our best performance and credit to Fortune, they looked a decent team. But four wins, one draw and one defeat is a great start for us and trust me, we’ll be fighting till the end, I can promise that!” Jordan Sharifia’s first half double, along with strikes from Brett Stead and Rob Jay seemed to have earned Fortune the win. Assistant manager Lee Fegan said: “It hurts [to not win] but there are positives we can take away from the game. We played very well

Fans arrested over Grant attack plot Egyptian Security Forces have arrested football supporters who were plotting to attack Israeli coach Avram Grant during his Ghana team’s trip to Egypt for a World Cup qualifer. A member of the Egyption Football Association said supporters had “planned to hurt him with several attacks of chants”, adding: “They don’t want him to come to Egypt because people don’t like him around.” However, they did deny they had agreed with their Ghanaian counterparts to increase security for the game, which is being held at the 75,000-capacity Borg Al Arab Stadium in Alexandria on 13 November. Egyptian Football Association executive director, Tharwat Sweilam, said: “Ghana is a normal team just like any other opponents that visit Egypt. “We don’t care about the nationality of their manager [Avram Grant] or any other thing. We know well the capabilities of our security forces and their ability to guard any national team. “We don’t want to dispel our concentration, we know what Ghana are attempting to do, but we don’t want to keep

for large parts of the game and looked very much in control, but unfortunately we just didn’t capitalise on the clear-cut chances we created which came back to haunt us.” Manager Simon Linden, who wasn’t at the game, admitted he was ‘gutted’ when he heard how the game panned out, but was more positive on the start his side have made to the season. He said: “I think it’s been a good start on the whole. We’ve only lost one from six and the fixtures haven’t been that kind. I’m confident there is a lot more to come from us. If you look at both the RC UK and Catford games, we have unfortunately let a two-goal lead slip twice against two title challengers – we could be sitting at the top of the pack.”
