Brighton facing anti-Israel onslaught – BEFORE Labour holds its conference there by Jenni Frazer jenni@jennifrazer.com @Jennifrazer
Brighton’s Jewish community is holding fast in the face of an unprecedented onslaught of virulent anti-Israel speakers and events, ahead of the Labour Party conference in the seaside resort. Almost every well-known anti-Zionist activist is scheduled to make an appearance at conference fringe events at the Brighton conference They include people who have resigned before being expelled from the party, such as former London mayor Ken Livingstone, or those expelled such as former Momentum vice-chair Jackie Walker. platforms to, among others, the former Israeli Knesset member Haneen Zouabi, who believes Tel Aviv to be “occupied territory” and Asa Winstanley, who runs the fiercely anti-Israel website the Electronic Intifada, and describes the Community Security Trust as “Mossad-linked” and “anti-Palestinian”. Jenny Manson, chair of Jewish Voice for Labour, will be speaking as will antiZionist Israeli academic Ilan Pappe and, it is rumoured, controversial Israeli Miko Peled, who galvanised Labour’s 2017 conference by suggesting at a meeting of “Free Speech on Israel” that the Holocaust was a matter of historical debate. Suspended Labour MP Chris Williamson, who claims that the party is “too apologetic” about allegations of antisemitism, is also believed to be taking part in some of the events. Labour Against the Witchhunt, which campaigns on behalf of those it believes have been wrongly expelled from the Labour Party over antisemitism, is currently promising on its Continued on page 2

Brighton on front line of anti-Israel hysteria Continued from page 1 website a parade of Palestinian flags and several “secret stunts” during the Brighton conference. Both the Brighton Jewish community and the CST have expressed serious concerns about the content of some of the fringe events planned for Labour’s conference. Mark Gardner, communications director of the CST, told Jewish News that it had been “planning for weeks as to what can best be done to support our Brighton CST team, the local community and police in order to ensure that communal life continues as normal during the Labour conference period”. Gardner said there was concern about “the fringe events and the far-left activists they attract, many of whom treat mainstream British Jews with suspicion and hostility due to the current controversy surrounding Labour and antisemitism.” CST also believed the far-right could use the opportunity of the Labour conference “to stir upset and fear.” Fiona Sharpe, communities consultant to the Brighton Jewish community and a leading activist for the Sussex Jewish Representative
Council, said: “Of course we do not want those who seek to taunt and offend our community in our city — no one wants racists and bigots on their doorsteps. That those who are suspended, or have been expelled from the party, for antisemitism, to be allowed to speak at the
conference Fringe, is totally disrespectful and would not be tolerated by any other minority community”. Nevertheless, despite reports of fear and discomfort among Brighton’s Jews, Sharpe insisted the community “will not be intimidated by those spreading hatred under the guise of anti-Zionism. Nor will we be dragged down to the levels that we have witnessed on social media recently”. She added: “We hope that one day hosting Labour in Brighton will be something that our community can look forward to and play a role in. However, this year, we just hope that it comes and goes quickly without

There was dismay among Brighton’s Jews this week at the leniency of a sentence meted out to a man who racially abused a member of the community at a pro-Israel demonstration in the city centre last month. On 8 August, Bahar Arar pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court to an offence of racial or religiously aggravated intentional harassment. He had released a volley of swearing and abuse at one of the Jewish demonstrators, Simon Cobbs, and had been detained by Sussex Police. But Arar’s sentence disappointed the community. For despite the offence, magistrates sentenced him to 24 months conditional discharge — and a fine of just £21. No conditions, in fact, were attached to the discharge. Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust said: “We regret the need for security and policing precautions, but Brighton has a relatively active far left anti-Israel and antiZionist scene, which can lead to street confrontations and anger, bringing the risk of blatant antisemitism as occurred not so long ago
and led to a conviction”. A spokesperson for Sussex Police, who at one point were believed to have been considering challenging the sentence, would only tell Jewish News: “Sentencing is not a matter for police”.

Left-wing group claims Williamson support A new movement that describes antisemitism in Labour as “unfounded smears” is due to launch with the apparent backing of a left-wing group whose honorary president is Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, writes Mathilde Frot. The Labour Left Alliance (LLA) says it was “initiated” by the Labour Representative Committee and Labour Against the WitchHunt, with support from suspended MP Chris Williamson. LLA claims more than 900 supporters have signed up since it appealed for members on Sunday, including Jackie Walker, the journalist Asa Winstanley, and Bromley Momentum. A leaflet published on LLA’s website accuses the grassroots group

Momentum of supporting “the witch-hunt against Jeremy Corbyn”. It criticises its
Jewish founder Jon Lansman for comments made in June about Jewish Voice for Labour, a group set up in 2017 as an alternative to the Jewish Labour Movement. “Lansman’s attack on Jewish Voice for Labour as ‘not being part of the Jewish community’ and his demand that Chris Williamson MP should be expelled from the Labour Party are indefensible,” the leaflet reads. “Of the numerous unfounded smears thrown at Corbyn – being too scruffy, not bowing deep enough, being a Czech spy etc – those around antisemitism have been one of the most consistent avenues of attack,” it stated. Williamson and the Labour Representative Committee have been contacted for comment.
Meanwhile, it has been alleged Williamson “found it hard” to sever ties with an ex-party member expelled over antisemitic tweet. Former aide Sayed Umaar Kazmi, who worked as a communications officer, claimed the MP was “reluctant” to distance himself from Scott Nelson due to his support for him. Nelson, who ran the Twitter account @SocialistVoice, was expelled over antisemitic tweets, for which he apologised. Among them was an image of an Israel flag peeling away to reveal a swastika. Williamson was suspended in June for remarks about Labour’s handling of antisemitism allegations – two days after being readmitted. He is taking legal steps against the party in a bid to overturn the decision.
FRENCH BAN CHABLOZ Death threat tweet Party lost 46k members The French embassy in the UK has confirmed that convicted Shoah denier Alison Chabloz has been barred from entering France for 40 years. The 55-year-old from Derbyshire was denied entry after attempting to board a Eurostar train to Paris on Monday in a post on Gab, a social media network. Chabloz said she was stopped at St Pancras International. A spokesperson for the Met Police confirmed they
stopped a 55-year-old woman at the train station on Monday under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, adding: “The woman was not arrested and no further action was taken.” The musician has written antisemitic songs posted to YouTube, mocking the Holocaust. A French embassy spokesperson said: “From a public order and security point of view Chabloz constitutes a particularly serious threat.”
Police are investigating after an antisemitism campaigner was targeted on Twitter with a message warning “Tick tock. Karma is coming” along with bomb and wrist watch emojis. Fiona Sharpe, spokesperson for the group Labour Against Antisemitism (LAA), said she read the tweet on Monday morning and immediately contacted the Community Security Trust and police. Police confirmed officers received a report on Monday relating to a tweet, adding: “The matter is being investigated.” The Twitter account behind the tweet, @Lucy_Loobie, rejected claims it had threatened Sharpe, telling another user: “It was about time running out not a bomb you silly people. I never threatened any such thing. Some misunderstood I was ref to,” the account wrote in another tweet.
Labour lost nearly 46,000 members last year amid mounting concerns about the party’s handling of Brexit and the antisemitism row. Official figures show membership dropped from 564,443 in 2017 to 518,659 members on December 31. Concerns over the leadership’s approach to Brexit, plus the continuing row over the handling of antisemitism allegations, have been ongoing

But the party continued to have by far the largest membership of UK political parties, compared with 180,000 Conservative party members, and 106,000 Liberal Democrat party members. Labour has also raised the most income, £45.6m, and spent the most funds, £46.3m, last year, according to the financial accounts of political parties.

Peer accuses Board of memorial ‘slur’ A Jewish peer who opposes a new Holocaust memorial next to Parliament this week accused the president of the Board of Deputies of a “slur” in branding critics of the plans “anti-Jewish”, writes Adam Decker. Baroness Ruth Deech, one of eight Jewish peers who have argued that the £100million should be spent on Holocaust education instead, hit out at the Board’s Marie van der Zyl this week in an increasingly tense war of words. “It’s such a slur to accuse anyone who opposes that design and that location of being anti-Jewish and opposing remembrance of the Holocaust,” said Deech. It comes just days after Westminster Council officers were revealed to be “heading towards” recommending that the planning application in the Grade-II listed park be rejected, after a Freedom of Information request revealed fraught correspondence. The planned memorial, which will include an underground learning centre, is completely unneces-
ISRAEL TOUR NUMBERS HIT A SIX-YEAR HIGH The summer of 2019 is set to see the highest number of teenage Jewish participants on Israel Tour since 2013, an increase of 10 percent on last year. A total of 1,209 British Jewish 16 year olds from 11 different youth movements and organisations will have taken the UJIA-supported tours by the time term starts, said Israel Tour organisers, who have filled 29 tour buses with the help of 71 of madrichim (tour leaders). JoJo Moss, who led an Israel Tour for Noam, the Zionist youth movement of Masorti Judaism, said it was “one of the greatest hadracha (leadership) experiences.” Israel Tour is offered through various youth groups including Bnei
Akiva, BBYO, Ezra, FSY, Habonim Dror, JLGB, Klal Chazon, LJYNetzer, Noam, RSY-Netzer, Sinai and Tribe. It comprised about half of all those sent on Israel programmes by UJIA last year.
The planned memorial is at the centre of a tense war of words
sary, argues Deech and others, but former ministers Ed Balls and Lord (Eric) Pickles, who chair the memorial foundation, argue otherwise. In a statement, the Board president called the memorial at Victoria Tower Gardens “vital” and said Westminster Council’s rejection of the planning applicaBaroness Deech
tion at a time of rising antisemitism “would send entirely the wrong signal to society”. But Deech gave the Board’s “ridiculous” position short shrift. She said: “Holocaust memorials, sadly, do not appear to do anything to hold back the spread of antisemitism. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have another one in the UK, but you’ve got to stop and think what it’s supposed to achieve.”

Missing dad of two found at Heathrow A father-of-two who went missing last week has been found by Shomrim volunteers near Heathrow Airport following a search effort involving hundreds of people, writes Mathilde Frot. Jeremy Rabinovitch, 42, from Elstree, left the family home in the middle of the night last Monday and did not leave a note. Wife Amanda was concerned for her husband’s welfare. The couple have a son aged six and a daughter aged 11 and had a stillborn child in 2012. Rabinovitch’s brother-in-law Ronnie King told Jewish News: “It’s a massive weight off and knowing that he’s safe now is the main thing. He is fine. He was, I think, sleeping in Terminal Five for one or two of the nights. He was inside. He wasn’t out in the street. Rabinovitch has not yet given a reason for his disappearance but needs a few days to recover, King said. “He’s not in a great way so he needs to get some help, he added. Shromrim was in constant contact with the Metropolitan Police and Hertfordshire Constabulary and set up a centre in Brent Street where they monitored hundreds of phone calls and gave out geographic coordinates to search to volunteers. “Searching in these circumstances is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, said Nochum Dewhurst, Shomrim search

BABY HELL OF THRONES STAR A British-Israeli actress who appeared in Games of Thrones is “devastated and heartbroken after Israel’s social services seized her baby in the middle of the night last week. Josephine Gillan, who played the part of the prostitute Marei in the HBO series, says authorities took her eight-month-old daughter Gloria from the family caring for her while she received therapy for postnatal depression. Gillan published a video of the moment on Twitter, showing police taking Gloria away at night, and is raising money on the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe to pay for a legal challenge. “I’m not allowed to see her or have contact, she wrote on the
crowdfunding page, accusing social services of “kidnapping her daughter. “What Israeli social services have done is illegal and I’m fighting to get her back, she wrote. “I have not done anything wrong and neither has my friend. The child has been placed in foster care – a move authorities say is in Gloria’s best interest, the Jewish Chronicle reported. A spokesman for Israel’s Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Social Services told the newspaper “cases such as this are under complete confidentiality by law, therefore it is impossible to identify details. Josephine Gillan

REUBENS HINTS AT GRAND REOPENING A beloved kosher deli in Baker Street which closed its doors earlier this year could reopen in the coming weeks. Reubens, which opened on Baker Street in 1973, announced it was unexpectedly closing down in May after 46 years in business following a family bereavement. The kosher institution this week teased its reopening on social media, with a series of cryptic posts, including lines like “Coming Soon” and “Stay tuned for more details.”
WARM TRIBUTES TO RABBI HAMMER A British rabbi has paid heartfelt tribute to his “friend, mentor and predecessor” who died this week at the age of 86. Israeli Rabbi Reuven Hammer was diagnosed with a brain tumour this year and passed away in Jerusalem on Monday. Posting on Facebook, Rabbi Jeremy Gordon of New London Synagogue on Abbey Road said: “Reuven gave his community confidence in the future. I think of him often. I value the time spent with him dearly and mourn his passing.”
‘Proper send off’ for artist buried in unmarked grave The family of a Jewish sculptor buried in a unmarked grave in Liverpool is honouring him after discovering his final resting place over a century after his death, writes Mathilde Frot. Robert Blackburn’s grave remained unmarked after he died from a heart infection at the age of 30 in 1910, and it is believed his family could not afford a gravestone at the time. His grandson Keith Blackburn, 70, an artist and decorator living in north London, aims to give him a “proper send off ” with a stone setting ceremony in Liverpool on Sunday. Keith said kaddish for his grandfather for the first time after visiting the grave in March, with help from local archivist Arnold Lewis who discovered the site. “Having gone from knowing entirely nothing to that point was very emotional,” Keith told Jewish News. His grandfather was educated at The University Department of Applied Arts and exhibited at several galleries in Liverpool, before working on the city’s Queen Victoria Monument. Exhibit recalls Skeet House A kosher retreat in the Kent countryside is to host a new photo exhibition charting the life and times of the Brady Club, which once shaped Jewish life in the East End of London, writes David Legmann. Skeet Hill House, a seven-acre retreat in rural Chelsfield, was where the Brady Club once met and ran its activities, and this month those memories go on show after past members came together to pool photos for the gallery launch next month. In its heyday it had thousands of members, but changing demographics led to it shutting in the 1970s. “I joined when I was 14,” said Michael Yershon, 76, who helped organise the new permanent exhibit. “I still passionately about the Brady Club, as do all of my peers. It helped to shape the local Jewish community.” • Tickets cost £5. Call 0168 983 4355 to book.

The eye-catching painting of Wilhelm Holitscher
The portrait was bought in 2016 by London’s Ben Uri Gallery, which profiles Jewish and immigrant artists, but which had no idea that the subject was Hodge’s grandfather, until her sister saw it. Wilhelm was the chief engineer of the Danube Steamboat Shipping Company and was interned in Liverpool as an “enemy alien” shortly after arriving in the UK, despite his age and poor health. “It is a horrible story,” Hodge told the Guardian. “His wife was 55 and she thought they [Nazis] wouldn’t touch people who were really old.” Hodge said she had read her grandfather’s diaries and learnt of a man who loved music and politics, but who was deeply unhappy in the UK. “He didn’t speak the language so he felt very isolated and depressed,” she said. Wilhem’s portrait is on display at “Art-exit 1939 – A Very Different Europe,” staged by the Ben Uri Gallery at the 12 Star Gallery in Westminster.

Fun in fundraising / Special Report
The youngsters coming of age by scaling new heights “With the Jacksons, we came up with this idea to take 30 kids celebrating their barand batmitzvah up a mountain and get them either to receive sponsorship or pledge to donate some of their gift money to a charity”. Soon, what began as a loose grouping of Jewish parents evolved into the Bnei Mitzvah Charity Challenge, whose 84 young hikers to date have raised more than £110,000 for good causes, including Norwood, Kisharon, and Camp Simcha. Since 2017, the trio have organised a hike every summer. The first was at Helvellyn in the Lake District, followed by two hikes in Snowdonia. On that first trip, Evie Sultman raised funds for charity 4ocean, which aims to clear plastic pollution from oceans and coasts. “It was the weekend that had everything: stunning views, great company, delicious JGT Advert 165x260mm v5.qxp_JN advert 165x260mm food, fun 07/08/2019 walks,
Who wouldn’t want to go the extra mile for their child’s bar or batmitzvah? Three Mill Hill parents literally did just that and more, by organising a fundraising mountain climb up to mark their family’s coming of age celebrations, writes David Legmann. Keen hiker Sarah Sultman, from Mill Hill, came up with the idea alongside friends Matthew and Natalie Jackson, as her daughter, Evie, approached her batmitzvah three years ago. “I thought it would be really nice to do something for [Evie’s] batmitzvah that involved a hike or a physical challenge” explained Sarah, a co-director of Gesher Primary School, in Willesden.
parent-child bonding and thousands of pounds raised for charities”, said parent Simon Bernholt of his recent trip. Sarah Sultman recalls “a really special Friday night experience”, following a challenging “six or seven hour-long hike” on the first day. “Every child tells us what charity they’re raising for and why. It’s really moving, because there are some children who have been touched by an experience in their life. “We had a girl raising for Great Ormond Street last year, because they saved her life as a baby. ” Everyone takes a break from hiking on the second day, during Shabbat. “We bring lots of games, and we discourage 14:11 Page 1 mobile phones or electronic
equipment”. During the hikes, “fun and camaraderie” prevails, with kids and parents bonding with each other as they scramble up the mountains together. Sarah says: “We tell the children they can raise money for whatever means something to them. I think that’s part of coming of age, that you give the kids the option to think about causes close to their heart”. Two bursary places are available for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. All food provided is kosher, cooked on site by three volunteer Scouts. For details of next year’s trip, you can email at: bneimitzvahcc@ gmail.com or Facebook: BneiMitzvahCC

Franklin goes to Mars A Mars rover being built by British engineers and named after a Jewish scientist is nearly ready, ahead of a projected 2021 Mars landing. The “Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover,” a joint European-Russian mission, is in its final stages of construction, with just the solar panels, mast and camera system left to fit. If it lands successfully, the rover will look for signs of life on the Red Planet, such as tiny microbes, or evi-

As part of this, it will drill into Mars’s surface. “Rosalind Franklin is looking like the real rover now,” said Chris Draper, flight model operations manager at Airbus UK. “We started assembly in December and we thought we might deliver the rover in late July… We’ve performed well.” Born in Notting Hill to Jewish parents in 1920, Franklin was a British biophysicist and X-ray crys-

A blueprint of the £60m Ultrasat
Israeli has announced a new mini-satellite with no less than the universe in its sights. The £60 million Ultrasat, due to launch in 2023, sees in ultraviolet (UV) light, and scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute said: “This unique configuration will help us answer some of the big questions in astrophysics”. Professor Eli Waxman and his team have set Ultrasat the task of gathering data to shed new light on the formation of neutron stars, the emission of gravitational waves and the behaviour of supermassive black holes. News of the venture follows Israel’s disappointment in April, after the crashlanding of moon-bound Beresheet, a privately-funded lunar lander. “Ultrasat puts Israel, and its scientists and engineers, at the forefront of a global movement to explore the universe,” said Israel Space Agency director Avi Blasberger.

World /Israeli elections / Trump protests / News briefs
Bibi rules out unity bid Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week made his political vision for Israel crystal clear, promising to establish “a strong right-wing government.” “This is my commitment to Likud voters. There will be no unity government,” he wrote in an op-ed published in the right-wing Israel Hayom newspaper. Netanyahu is pushing back on demands that he form a unity government with the centrist Blue and White party. “The citizens of Israel face a single choice in the upcoming election: who will
be the next prime minister of the state of Israel? Will a weak and inexperienced leftwing government led by Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz be established; or rather a strong right-wing government headed by the Likud under my leadership?” he wrote. “Voters from the nationalist camp must shed their apathy.” Netanyahu’s comments came after Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman said he would only
support a candidate for prime minister who was willing to push for a national unity government. Lieberman scuttled coalition talks in May and prevented Netanyahu from forming a government, and polls show him gaining strength. However most of the Israeli public opposes a unity government, with more than half of those surveyed against a coalition of Blue and White and Likud, Times of Israel reported.
‘1,000 RABBIS’ CRITICISE TRUMP DEMOS Right-wing American rabbis have criticised “shofarblowing justice warriors” for “trivialising the Holocaust” by protesting Donald Trump’s immigration policies. The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), which claims to represent more than 1,000 “traditional rabbis” in matters of public policy, has consistently supported Trump on a range of issues and lodged its latest objections on Sunday. A CJV statement condemned Monday’s ‘Never Again Action Noise Rally’ to
protest against federal contractors who detain undocumented immigrants. “The event announcement refers to ‘Never Again’ and ‘deportation,’ a combination designed to evoke images of Jews shipped in cattle cars to the murderous death camps of the Nazi era,” said the CJV. It called the event “a trivialisation of the Holocaust and utterly contrary to authentic Jewish values”. In recent weeks hundreds of Jews, immigrants
and activists have worked together to bring cities to a standstill, protesting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) methods of separating parents and children in huge camps at the border. A Jewish group called Never Again Action has been driving the protests, which have been held outside detention centres as well as ICE buildings. Demonstrators have sung in Hebrew, English and Spanish, while many have worn yellow
T-shirts reading ‘Never Again Para Nadie’ (Never Again For Anyone). “It’s offensive in so many ways that one loses count,” said CJV’s Rabbi Steven Pruzanski. “It maligns the targeted company, defames ICE agents, displays woeful ignorance of history, trivialises and distorts the Holocaust, and is a vulgar insult to six million murdered Jews. The fact that many protesters are Jewish themselves merely makes it worse.”

100 TYRES SLASHED IN JEWISH AREA More than 100 car tyres were slashed in the heavily Jewish town of Lakewood, New Jersey, this week. All the cars involved were reported to belong to or be used by Jews, according to local media. Security footage showed a person in a hoodie using a knife to slash tyres. Lakewood, which is known as a centre of Charedi life in the United States, has seen its population boom in recent decades, from around 60,000 in 2000 to more than 100,000 as of 2017.

A 92-year-old German will go on trial in October charged with helping to kill hundreds of Jews at the Stutthof death camp towards the end of the war. The man, identified only as Bruno D, is accused of being an SS guard at Stutthof and of having been involved in the killing of 5,230 prisoners – many Jewish – between August 1944 and April 1945. He has acknowledged being there, knowing that people were pushed into gas chambers, and seeing bodies being burned in the crematorium, but is arguing that this does not make him guilty. An estimated 65,000 people, including many Jews, died at Stutthof.

Holocaust centre on National Lottery list

A Holocaust education centre in Yorkshire dedicated to telling the stories of survivors has been shortlisted to win £10,000 from the National Lottery. The Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre at Huddersfield University faced competition from more than 700 entries in the best heritage project category. To secure the award, which marks the National Lottery’s 25th anniversary, the centre must now win a public vote held on nationallottery.co.uk until 21 August. The £1.1m centre opened last year with lottery funding has received more than 5,000 visitors, including school-pupils. As the only resource of its kind in the north of England, it delivers learning programmes on the consequences of prejudice, extremism and intolerance.
Its interactive exhibition, titled Through Our Eyes, tells the stories of 16 survivors and refugees and features photographs, digital testimony, artefacts and film. Lilian Black, chair of the centre and the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association, is the daughter of Eugene Black, who survived Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora. “Although my father didn’t live to see the centre built, he saw all the plans and I know he would feel we did justice to the memory of all families who were murdered in the Holocaust,” she said. “He felt education about it was just so important for today, so he would be thrilled to know about our programmes with schools.” Vote for the Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre at www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk

Special Report / Trump’s cheerleader
Model citizen? An Orthodox pin-up is trying to persuade American Jews to vote Republican in 2020 Jewish Americans historically vote overwhelmingly in favour of the Democratic Party. Elizabeth Pipko is looking to change that, writes Joseph Wolkin. The model and figure skater is the face of the Exodus Movement, a group that started as “Jexodus” to spread a right-wing message in an attempt to sway Jewish voters towards voting red in 2020. The 24-year-old said: “I’ve always been a proud Jew, very involved in American politics and I’m really excited that people are responding so well to what I’m trying to do. I have the platform to do it. To be in your early 20s and doing something like this is overwhelming. But obviously, Donald Trump (pictured) has changed a lot, and there’s a need for this since people are responding so well.” Pipko says people are often stymied by her, asking if she has been brainwashed and why she would support Trump so staunchly. At a time when Jewish voters are disappointed in the Republican response to antisemitism, the Exodus Movement is not an easy sell.
A recent poll claims that an unprecedented number of Jewish voters feel less secure with Trump at the helm, with 59 percent of the community saying they blame the commander-inchief for the country’s sudden reported rise in antisemitism. Further complicating things for conservatives looking to capture the Jewish vote, the survey also found that issues concerning Israel were the lowest priority among Jewish voters in 2020. It is questionable whether Pipko’s movement will be able to change established voting patterns: Trump received less than 30 percent of the Jewish vote in the 2016 presidential election, while his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton received 71 percent. “Whether or not I can help change the number in 2020, I think there’s a need based on what’s going on. Apart from my movement and apart from Donald Trump, the Conservative Jews and Reform Jews are shrinking in number, versus the Orthodox Jews, who vote overwhelmingly Republican. We’re going to see change in the coming

years, whether it’s 10 or 20 [years]. Donald Trump has made it very easy to support him, as a Jew.” The political arena is not always a pleasant one, and Pipko already faces a backlash. Some people even question her Judaism. Likewise, Pipko, who keeps kosher and observes Shabbat, said she is constantly asked how she could be an observant Jew while pursuing a modelling career. “They think that because I’m modelling in a swimsuit, I don’t believe in Hashem,” she said. “People like to criticise in general when someone starts a new movement, especially if it’s a younger person. “To come from modelling and say I’m going to make an impact on politics, I don’t blame them
for treating me a certain way. I wish it was different. However, I’m totally fine proving myself.” It does not dampen her determination. Pipko is often vocal when politicians on either side of the aisle make antisemitic comments. Of late, she has made national headlines by weighing in on accusations that Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar is antisemitic, along with other controversial topics about Israel and Judaism. Above all, Pipko says she is out to challenge misconceptions. “One is that I don’t care about Judaism. A lot of people don’t think I keep kosher or go to synagogue. It’s not true. I pray every single day. I have a kosher house. I go to synagogue every Shabbat. All of these things matter to me.”

WORSHIPPERS CLASH AT HOLY SITE Muslim worshippers and Israeli police clashed at a major Jerusalem holy site during prayers marking the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha. Palestinian medics said at least 14 people were wounded, one seriously, in the skirmishes with police at the site, which Muslims refer to as the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and Jews refer to as the Temple Mount. Police said at least four officers were wounded. Witnesses claim at least two people were arrested.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
The beach front
We all sense it. The calm before the storm. Before you can say ‘Facilitated customs arrangement’, Westminster will reconvene to face down its greatest challenge of the 21st century. The prime minister, his majority hanging by a gossamer thin thread, refuses to rule out suspending Parliament to get the UK out of Europe without a deal. Legal challenges are afoot, a no confidence motion looms and a snap election hangs in the air like a grey Corbynite rain cloud. If we are to be burdened by a third general election in five years, September’s conferences are where the parties mould their manifestos. As we report this week, the chosen setting for this year’s Labour shindig has become the beach head in the battle against a uniquely bitter breed of anti-Zionist activist whose binary bigotry is reserved for the Jewish state, alone among all 194 others. The English riviera resort loved for its diversity is now infamous for the opposite, with bus-loads of one-eyed anti-Israel agitators set to head down the M23 (belting out that classic Village People sing-a-long, ‘It’s fun to pray on the IHRA, It’s fun to pray on the IHRA…”). In the back row, where all the vape-smoking, chewing-gum-under-the-seat trouble makers lurk, is Ken ‘Hitler supported Zionism’ Livingstone, Jackie ‘Jews financed the slave trade’ Walker and Jew-baiting Chris ‘We’re too apologetic’ Williamson. Joining them for the ride are former MK Haneen ‘Tel Aviv is occupied territory’ Zouabi and Asa ‘the CST is linked to Mossad’ Winstanley. These people, like the Labour leader, are ideologues surrounded by ideologues who would sell their own grandma if it raised a few quid for Iranian TV or a Gaza flotilla. They will never be reasoned out of a position it doesn’t seem they were ever reasoned into in the first place. The surreal sea of Palestinian flags at last year’s Labour conference bore witness to a party fuelled by a virulent tribalism that binds together those who hate Israel and, often by transparent extension, Jews. Its leader could be prime minister in weeks. Hold on to your hats. It’s going to be a bumpy, ugly autumn.

How best to put our case The organisation We Believe in Israel has been highly effective in supporting pro-Israel activism in our community since 2012. Its core idea is building groups of active and confident Israel communicators across civil society, to put forward Israel’s merits, and to defeat the arguments of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) and vocal anti-Zionism campaigners. If one reads its many useful guides, We Believe advises against using vitriolic language, even when one vehemently disagrees with the statements of another person – because it alienates the ordinary, decent members of society

who we are ultimately alerting to our message. Our community has rightly called for antisemitic language to be rooted out of debates around Israel, Zionism and the Middle East. It is obviously vital that our own behaviour does not fall short of general standards of decency — whether in relation to online abuse and harassment, or civil disorder offences. Perhaps it is time for another We Believe in Israel conference, to provide further guidance on how the community should communicate about Israel.
“B-but it’s my face!”
Jeremy Havardi’s thorough analysis of Boris Johnson’s approach to the Jewish community and the Middle East (“A trusted ally, despite the occasional wobble”, Jewish News, 8 August) is most welcome. The Jewish media in recent weeks has often lacked balance when commenting on this subject. Understandably, however, it begs the question as to our new prime minister’s future policy, assuming that he can successfully negotiate Brexit in the next few months and then win any subsequent election. Boris is a realist, and if Brexit is coupled with much closer business relations with the United States, this is likely to
lead a clear alignment of his approach with that of Donald Trump’s government at the expense of the policies of the mandarins of our own Foreign Office. Gary Mond NW7

When can I challenge a Will? Unsurprising, a Will can be challenged on the basis that it appears to be a forgery or that it has not been validly executed. ‘AsAJews’ do like to be beside the seaside JENNI FRAZER
F
or some time now I have been aware that I am “the wrong kind of Jew”. I am, you see, the kind of Jew who takes pride and pleasure in Judaism and (most of ) the Jewish community. The kind of Jew despised by the stormtroopers of Momentum and, doubtless, parts of the inner circle of the Labour leader’s office. And yes, I used the word “stormtroopers” quite deliberately. Because, horrifyingly, nothing but an allusion to Nazi ideology will do when it comes to considering last week’s extraordinary goings-on in Brighton. Brighton, bizarrely, has become the litmus test for antisemitism in 21st century Britain, where routinely, week in and week out, the forces of light are obliged to challenge the forces of darkness. It seems only appropriate that the city will once again be the venue for this year’s Labour Party conference. This time the battleground was to do with the repellent Chris Williamson, the Derby North MP (aka Jewish communitybaiter-in-chief ) doing his best to become reinstated into the party. For those who have been living in caves
❝
SUCH LANGUAGE IS CHILLING BUT, OF COURSE, EMBRACED BY WILLIAMSON FANS for the past couple of years, a quick recap: Williamson was suspended in February for, among other things, claiming Labour had been too apologetic in the antisemitism row. He was later readmitted, only to be hastily re-suspended in June. Williamson decided to team up with Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell, one of whose cartoons was recently rejected by the paper, to his great fury. In this cartoon Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson is depicted as the “antisemite-finder general”, whose horse neighs “Tro-o-ope”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also appears in the strip. Bell and Williamson planned to auction the cartoon at a meeting they wanted to hold in Brighton. Sadly for the pair, they were not greeted with open arms by potential venues. Three
separate places refused their booking, and thus Williamson — sans Bell —was obliged to hold his rant/speech outdoors in the city’s Regency Square. And here is where things got really troubling. After Williamson had spoken, a woman clutching a poster took the microphone to call for those in the crowd who were “members of the Jewish race”, to come to the front and line up alongside the MP to have their picture taken with him to express support. Such language is chilling, but of course was embraced by Williamson supporters, who claimed that the as yet unidentified woman is herself the daughter of Holocaust survivors, which apparently makes it just fine and dandy to single out the “AsAJews” in the motley audience. Since Williamson has also expressed support for Labour Against The Witch-hunt, which campaigns for the reinstatement of members expelled over antisemitism, it was no surprise to see ex-Labour member and Witchhunt front-man Tony Greenstein shambling forward, eager to line up with the MP. Williamson himself did not appear to have any problem with this stirring call to arms, instead sitting on a rock, relaxed
and laughing with his friends as several people appeared for their photo opportunity. Were I of a conspiratorial frame of mind, I might imagine that the next such set of pictures would feature the “AsAJews” complete with pretty and shiny yellow stars, while a spot of discreet bookburning — books written by the wrong kind of Jew, naturally — goes on in the background. But that would be an extreme reaction. Wouldn’t it?

Sorry to the schoolboy who called me a ‘Yid’ EDITOR, JEWISH NEWS
I
’d like to apologise to the schoolboy who called me a ‘Yid’ on a Northern Line train at Camden Town station in 1987. My reaction, a terrifying mix of shock and anger, was unforgivable. I told my parents, who told my school, who told pupils to take extra care on public transport. In hindsight, it all got way out of hand. If I’d only known in my formative years what I know now – that Tottenham fans have victoriously reclaimed the antisemitic slur ‘Yid’ as a defence AGAINST antisemitism, I wouldn’t have caused such a fuss. That teenager on the High Barnet train probably hadn’t even noticed my Jewish school uniform. He’d simply mistaken me for a fellow Spurs fan and wanted to ask if I’d seen Hoddle and

But with the season starting this weekend, Spurs sent out an email asking supporters for their thoughts on a range of quotes from prominent figures and organisations, both for and against its use. It included an editorial from this newspaper calling for a crackdown on the “deeply offensive term of abuse”. Continued on page 6
Waddle on Top Of The Pops. This week, as Tottenham concludes its consultation with fans on the wisdom
of calling themselves Yids, I’ve been wondering how I’d got it so wrong for so long. Yes, the German word ‘Yid’ had been contemptuously used since the 19th century, chanted by Oswald Mosely’s Blackshirts (“Get rid of Yids!”) and daubed on synagogues and gravestones. Last month I saw it scrawled on a supermarket toilet door. But, mercifully, all that silliness is behind us now fans of a sports team have made it a ‘badge of honour’. Their feat is all the more remarkable for being achieved without the backing of their beloved club.
❝
No official Spurs merchandise carries the term ‘Yid Army’, there’s no mention of it in the new stadium or match day programme and no player or official utters it, despite it being a positive badge of honour. Anyone would think the club is thoroughly ashamed of the association. So, apologies once again to the innocent teen on the train and thank you Yid Army for liberating a racist word from its tragic history. Forget about respect and education. It turns out shoving an antisemitic insult into the fiery, testosterone-fuelled cauldron of a football stadium is the solution to centuries of fear and hate.

Ethiopian Jews in Israel have had to face racism SHMUEL YOSEF UJIA EDUCATOR
I
was nine when my family braved the dangerous route from Ethiopia and through Sudan, to Israel. We arrived there in November 1984, fulfilling the ancient dream of Ethiopian Jews of living in our homeland. Yet in Israel, Ethiopian Jews have faced numerous challenges. We face racism. As immigrants to a very different society to that of our parents and grandparents we also face the daily struggle to get by and the challenge of educating our children to thrive in our new society. We have therefore come up against a glass ceiling. Some have broken through it and made a tremendous contribution to Israel’s society, providing Ethiopian-Israeli role models in the army, politics, high-tech, media and elsewhere. But there is much more work to be done. Our challenges have often been in the public eye, most recently after Solomon Teka, 18, was shot dead by an off-duty police officer. Too many young Ethiopians have died in such circum-
stances without police officers facing justice. Our youth feel treated in a racist and arbitrary way by police. Some have committed suicide and, unfortunately, this has occurred in the army. We have also faced discrimination from the ultraOrthodox Rabbinate and in the workplace. This is why Solomon’s death released so much storedup anger in the demonstrations that followed. Many of our youth have not been successfully integrated into the educational system, resulting in young Ethiopians on the street and friction with the police. Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has promoted credible solutions, working with members of the community to launch a new policy on Ethiopian integration in September 2016. By that time, however, much damage had already been done. Our youth already felt humiliated and alienated by racism and prejudice. It will take a major investment of time and effort to earn their confidence. It was against this background that UJIA’s Ethiopian Bar and Bat Mitzvah programme took place this year. As an educator, I have been involved in the programme since it began 15 years ago. It takes British Jewish children of Bar

FOR ETHIOPIANS, BONDING WITH THEIR BRITISH ‘TWINS’ STRENGTHENS THEIR TIES WITH JEWS Mitzvah age and twins them with EthiopianIsraeli children the same age from Kiryat Bialik in northern Israel. Last month, the British children and their families joined their Ethiopian “twins” in Israel for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. The impact is profound. For the Ethiopian children, bonding with their British twins strengthens their sense of belonging to the Jewish people. Programme graduates have gone on to become young leaders within our community. One of this year’s participants, Osher, expressed his joy at hosting Charlie, from London. “I’m glad I got a wonderful, lovely, and
friendly twin,” said Osher. “I was privileged to host him in my home. I couldn’t have asked for a better Bar Mitzvah celebration.” Osher has not had an easy life and is being brought up by his 24year-old sister. Being twinned with Charlie gave him a positive, life-affirming Jewish experience. Young Ethiopian-Israelis need to know they are a valued and integral part of Israeli society. They need more opportunities to develop the pride, confidence and leadership skills that come from appreciating their Ethiopian-Jewish heritage and their ties with the Jewish people. Overcoming our challenges will take longterm cooperation between the state and the community. There is no quick fix. But through UJIA’s programme, described by the mayor of Kiryat Bialik as “a model of success”, UK Jews are having a positive impact. I hope you continue to find ways to deepen the ties between our community and yours, bring our branches of the Jewish family closer together and make a difference to the lives of young Ethiopian-Israelis. My invaluable day on the front line of care CHIEF EXECUTIVE, JEWISH CARE
A
year into my role at Jewish Care, I’ve just completed my third shift (to be truthful it was actually half a shift) in one of our 10 care homes for older people, something I made a commitment to doing as I prepared to take up the post. Despite working in the organisation for 23 years, there’s no substitute for joining colleagues who deliver services our community relies on. This was not just a courtesy visit. It was a genuine attempt to work with our care staff, understand their challenges and help to inform how we are planning for the future. I reported for duty at 7.45am, in time for the handover from night staff – most of our staff work 12-hour shifts. This home is organised in households of 12 residents, so each household has its own
kitchen, enabling the team to offer breakfast in a bespoke manner. One might expect that early in the morning the team would be busy supporting residents to wake up and get dressed ready for the day. However, several residents wake early and the team had already ensured that they could start their day when they wish – a truly person-centred approach. My job was to make tea and coffee and talk with residents. Amazingly, one had worked at Downing Street for a number of prime ministers and had fascinating stories to share. It reminded me that when we recruit and induct new colleagues, we talk about how residents in our homes are not just service users, not just receivers of care and support. They are people with rich and interesting histories who have much to continue to offer. Apart from seeing first-hand the amazing jobs our teams perform, I could see the benefit of our new electronic care planning system in action. It is hugely challenging for our care teams

who have a lot of detail to recall about each person and these systems really do ensure continuity of care. I know this is just the beginning of the journey to utilise technology to support our work and it will be important to invest further as we plan for the future. Breakfast seemed to glide into lunch – by which time I was already feeling exhausted. My day as a chief executive is often 12 hours long but pales into insignificance compared to the days of our teams, where the physical and emotional demands of caring are phenomenal. Yet, despite feeling tired, I also felt an immense sense of pride in our staff, which was matched by the gratitude of the relatives I had the chance to talk to as well. In a quirk of timing, we are about to launch our strategy for the next few years
and I literally finished my (half ) shift and went into a meeting reviewing our communications plan for the strategy. It reminded me of the importance of taking a genuinely inclusive approach to thinking about the future. I have spent much of my first year talking to colleagues at the front line and their views are shaping mine and our organisation’s thinking. Something that won’t change is our continued reliance on our community to support our work – be it with money or even joining our workforce, not to mention the thousands of volunteers who bring the Yiddishkeit to our work. Maybe the next time I spend time on the front line, I’ll see you there too, supporting our dedicated teams who care for our spouses, parents, siblings and grandparents.

Children in Year 7 participating to Tribe’s Camp Barak had the honour of meeting Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis who visited the camp site in Scotland. The event was one of several run by the United Synagogue across the UK and abroad as part of a programme to encourage learning and inspire young Jews through group activities. Mirvis said: “To see so many young people of outstanding calibre, celebrating their Judaism with such enthusiasm, confirms to me we have a great future.”
Borehamwood and Elstree shul’s Kaytana camp was a big hit with campers, who got their hands on exotic animals and creepy crawlies. The popular summer camp for children aged four to 10 ran nature-themed activities, with a spider, snake and chameleon coming to visit, as well as a treasure hunt, bouncy castle, inflatable slide and bungee run. Joel Sager, who led the camp, said: “The children enjoyed a wide range of fun activities. Families come back year after year.”

All money raised during the event held at Hartsbourne Golf Club will go towards WIZO’s vocational secondary school in Jerusalem, which supports at-risk teenagers. WIZO chair Ronit Ribak Madari said: “Not only were the players able to enjoy a fantastic day of golf and hospitality, but they played in the knowledge that they were changing the game for vulnerable and disadvantaged teenagers for whom, without WIZO, there would be no hope of becoming winners.” Madari is pictured fourth from the right, with Janine Berg, Caron Julius, Leslie Rose, Joy Shapiro, Anne Orman, Maureen Fisher, and Lydia Drukarz.

First there was an almighty roar. Then floors trembled, smoke ascended and the mighty marble columns looked as though they might collapse. It took a moment to realise we weren’t experiencing an earthquake, but rather the impending doom of some terrible creature. Before I knew it, a Ukranian Ironbelly dragon was blasting out flames and vaulting at terrifying speed towards us. Thankfully it was all just exceptional Top: Inside Bellatrix Lestrange’s vault; special effects trickery from the newest Below: Silicon goblin masks extension to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour: The Making of Harry Potter in Leavesden. The Gringotts Wizarding Bank, unveiled in April, is the latest addition to this thrilling behind-the-scenes tour of eight Harry Potter films made over 10 years. Aside from being almost eaten alive by a dragon, visitors can gasp at the lavish banking hall, replete with ornate crystal chandeliers and towering marble columns – all made from just glass, plaster and copious amounts of artistic talent – as well as learn about the laborious, yet awe-making process involved in turning 60 actors into goblins with silicon masks. There’s even the chance to get up close to Bellatrix Lestrange’s bank vault, teeming with magical treasures and an impressive 210,000 galleons, knuts and sickles (pounds and pence for the Muggles out there). It’s hard not to walk around this gargantuan homage to J K Rowling’s favourite boy wizard with the lightning scar without being astounded at every turn and shaking your head in sheer amazement at the skill involved behind the camera, from sets, props and special effects to costumes, design and animatronics. Taking my eight-year-old daughter along for the tour (who really needed little persuading), we smiled in wonder at the Great Hall of Hogwarts, marvelled at the potions classroom and happily delved into Dumbledore’s office, before sneaking into the Gryffindor common room. Then it was time for a quick broomstick ride over London – thanks to some awesome green screen special effects – before braving a trek into the Forbidden Forest, where we caught a glimpse of Buckbeak the Hippogriff and came all-too-close to Aragog, a ginormous spider with a leg span measuring more than 18 feet. That’s one spider I wouldn’t want crawling out my bath. We hot-footed it over to Platform 9 ¾ just in time to catch the Hogwarts Express, before finding ourselves in the middle of Diagon Alley. Taking just over three hours to gape, gasp and gawk at all there was to see, our legs ached a little and my wallet was lighter - but we came away feeling truly spellbound. www.wbstudiotour.co.uk Francine Wolfisz

OCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Nowhere is this more important than your hotel on a city break. But the closer to the centre, the more you pay – and even if you were to afford it, can you justify such prices when your time is spent outside the hotel? I had just this dilemma on my recent trip to Vienna. Of course, I wanted to stay at the sumptuous Sacher hotel, as richly decadent as the iconic cake that shares its name and located in the centre of the city, but then I discovered Motel One, a short way away on foot and a long way away on price. For around £75 per night, you can stay in a beautiful old building that has been beautifully renovated and fitted with all the mod-cons that today’s traveller needs. My advice is to book room-only and have breakfast at one of the many tea salons for which Vienna is famous. Demel, well-known for its apple strudel, is just a short walk away, but we preferred Gerstner, with its grandiose former ballroom on the first floor. Who says you can’t have apple strudel for breakfast? Vienna is rich in imperial grandeur with grand palaces, gothic churches, wide boulevards,

SEDRA Vaetchanan BY RABBI SHAUL ROSENBLATT This week’s sedra starts with Moses saying “...and I prayed to God at that time”. The word used for prayer is not the usual one; its root is from the word chanan, which means “grace”, so translates as “I asked God for His grace at that time”. The rabbis make a striking point. “Righteous”people, they say, do not ask God for something based on their good deeds. They simply ask Him for a free gift. One would think if anyone is going to mention the good deeds they have done and ask God for something based on that, it would be “righteous” people. But the rabbis tell us that part of the Jewish definition of a righteous person is understanding that this world is nothing more than a free gift — and hence feeling deep gratitude in seeing the world that way. Can anyone tell me what they did to “deserve” this gorgeous world? How did you help God out? In Jewish thinking, every precious moment of our lives is simply a free, generous, open-hearted gift from a loving Father in Heaven. There is nothing that He needs from us. We are simply the lucky recipients of His incredible love. And if we want to ask for more, via prayer, He’s very open to listening — but equally we should not have expectations. “Righteous” people, the rabbis say, pray for a free gift. They appreciate that nothing is coming to them. It’s all a bonus. So, if they get it, they are deeply grateful. If they do not, they will be equally grateful for all that they have.

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about: Protesting in a holy place BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Protesting against the segregation of men and women in shul, Shani Tzoref was forcibly removed from a synagogue in Berlin, which adhered to this separation. So, what does the Torah say about protests and responses to them? Under the Ecclesiastical Courts Jurisdiction Act 1860, protesting in a holy place, if it disturbs the synagogue service, is a criminal offence in the UK. This may have its roots in the Torah injunction against a person who is liable for a capital offence: “From my altar you must take him…” Although the concept of “sanctuary” is recognised in the Torah, when Joab sought to take refuge from David at the Tent of the Tabernacle, he was not able to. If the matter for which the protest is
made is not for justice, but to challenge the way in which holy offices are conducted, it is reasonable to take steps to remove that person if, according to custom at

that place of worship, their behaviour is considered sacrilegious. Another basis to test this matter is that of the Talmudic injunction: “Who are you to come into my home and rule over me?” If you go into someone’s premises, you should obey the house rules – or leave. Our sages teach: “All that your host asks of you, you must do, except leave”. But if one’s behaviour causes others to be upset, then the conduct of one cannot trump the right of all the others. Another Talmudic principle: “Is your blood thicker (literally: redder) than mine?!” This rhetorical statement is applied to saving lives: that one may not save his or her own life at the expense of the life of another. The same surely applies to rights to protest: no matter how dear a principle is to one’s own heart, it does not trump the rights of others. The Bible Says What? ‘Babies will be dashed against the rocks’ BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS In the Polish town of Jedwabne in 1941, about 1,600 Jewish men, women, and children were massacred. A witness described it: “Beards of old Jews were burned, babies were killed at their mothers’ breasts, people were beaten murderously and forced to sing and dance.” Their non-Jewish neighbours forced the bloodied and wounded Jews into a barn, which was then doused with kerosene and lit. Set against that terrible example is this passage from Psalm 137:3 and 9: “For there they that carried us away captive… required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion… Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us — he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.” The imagery is not only horrific, but it is also incredibly similar to the horrors suffered in Jedwabne. The truth is there are parts of Tanakh that inhabit a world of violence
that is beyond acceptable today. But we do not live in a world in which such violence is unknown. For Jews it exists within living memory. It is also possible that it was within the living memory of those exiled in Babylon, weeping by the river, that such violence had been committed. The Psalm becomes, therefore, a revenge fantasy, in which a completely disempowered, exiled community goes perhaps too far in imagining their oppressors receiving a taste of their own medicine. Last month we lost Eva Kor, a Holocaust survivor who advocated for forgiveness, despite what she and her twin suffered at the hands of Josef Mengele. Her response shows our own answer to the the Shoah doesn’t have to be akin to the Psalmist and that of violent revenge.

Progressively Speaking In light of American mass shootings, what does Judaism say about the right to protect oneself ? BY RABBI DANNY RICH Two more tragic mass shootings in America inevitably raise questions over what’s appropriate when it comes to self-defence. Judaism sanctifies human life, as Mishnah Sanhedrin affirms: “Whoever destroys a single human life is considered by Scripture as if they had destroyed the whole world, and who saves a single life is considered as if they had saved the whole world.” Guns, of course, are a relatively modern invention, but weapons might not be here forever, as reflected in the hope of Isaiah (2:4): “They shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” Nevertheless, the Jewish tradition is not a pacifist one and our scriptures are replete with examples relating to the taking of a human life — and yet is still not considered murder. Putting aside the concept of war
itself (which may or may not be defensive), a Jew is permitted to kill another who intends to kill — and is obligated to go to the defence of another, in accord with Leviticus 19: 16, that one should not “stand idly by”. There is a brief discussion in the Babylonian Talmud (Shabbat 63a) which prohibits the carrying of weapons on Shabbat. In the debate, the issue is raised about that which is necessary and that which is merely ornamental. In modern times, we should consider whether the owning and/
or carrying of a gun has become a symbolic demonstration of the right to do so, or whether there is a real threat to which the bearer could be required to respond. Modern democratic states require an amount of firearm power to counter genuine threats of terrorism and crime. But perhaps the Government and people of the United States might engage in an honest debate over whether “the right to bear arms” is now too costly, given the number of individual and mass shootings that have occurred. Micah (4:4) speaks of a time when everyone “will all sit under the vine and the fig tree and no one will make them afraid”. How best could we achieve such a society? DARREN RICH ISRAEL PROPERTY EXPERT
HOME IN ISRAEL REAL ESTATE GROUP Dear Darren Why do I need an agent ? Jeff Dear Jeff The thought of buying a property in a foreign country can be a daunting task for many reasons. Working with a local agent that speaks your language and understands the local
culture and has a wealth of knowledge and experience is a huge advantage to a local buyer and especially a nonlocal resident. For many people, a home purchase can be the largest single purchase in a lifetime. It is therefore important to give your trust to the correct person that will look after your interests, give you the best advice and avoid any potential mistakes. When a non-Israeli purchases from a building contractor and then returns to the UK, there is a lot of communication necessary between the client and the contractor. A good agent will be your eyes and ears throughout the whole purchase process, however long it takes.
sealed envelope marked “to be opened after my death”, especially if your Will is deposited with a professional organisation. It is important to review and update the list regularly. In this digital age, people have an increasing number of online accounts, not just for banking and investments, but also on sites such as eBay and Amazon, or funds in a PayPal account. Consider including password and account details in your list, as long as you are satisfied with secure storage arrangements for the list and remember to update it. When the inevitable happens, your executors need to access all your assets and liabilities, both hard copy and digital. Postal redirection helps with the former by ‘capturing’ any missing assets. The latter will need forward thinking on your part by putting digital access in place now for your executors to use only after your death.
This includes ensuring updating the client on any changes and decisions needed during the building process. On the other side of the process, there is so much more to selling an apartment than the actual sale. Upon completion of a purchase, an agent can help a client who is impeded by a language barrier or lack of local knowledge, and can even help with transferring all the utilities. An agent can also arrange direct debits from the client’s bank to ensure that the purchasing experience is simple and without pitfalls. Using an agent for all these things, means the purchasing experience is nothing short of a simple and enjoyable process.

frequencies between 30GHz and 300GHz, it can only travel over short distances. This means it needs a different infrastructure to 4G to operate. In particular, it requires a much larger number of smaller antennas (with a clear line of sight to each other). It is also faster. Currently, 4G has a maximum download speed of 300Mps (Megabits per second), although in reality, you would probably get a much slower rate than that. 5G is expected to provide download speeds of 10 and 50 Gps (Gigabits per second – Gps is 1,000 faster than Mps). Because of this much faster download (and upload) speed and an increased network capacity, it will give you greater benefits than existing 4G, including:
• The ability to download and upload files, movies and music much faster • No lag with things like video conferencing and gaming • More stable network connections when you are moving around • A wider coverage It is anticipated that it will also turbo-charge the adoption of IOT (internet of things) getting more devices likes cars, fridges etc connected. 5G is currently being rolled out by the major operators, so availability varies: • Vodafone is planning to roll out in 16 UK cities by the end of 2019 • O2 will have 3 cities ready by the end of 2019 • EE will also have 16 UK cities by the end of 2019 and another 10 by the end of 2020
