A YEAR IN CARTOONS

Our resident scribbler Paul Solomons reveals his funny picks of the year

I

’ve chosen the jokes that I’ve had the most fun with over the past year. Notably absent are the various Donald Trump and Brexitrelated cartoons that I’ve drawn. While I’ve enjoyed the plethora of

material that both of these subjects have provided, when it comes to farcical comedy situations, I’m just not in their league. To all those I have entertained, angered, amused or bemused over the last 12 months, I wish you a very happy and healthy new year.”

The day Social Services came to take away her four children was the worst day of Chava’s life. She was divorced, back living with her poverty-stricken mother in a house that had become dangerously dilapidated. A blockage in the drainage system caused rancid water to leak into the bathroom resulting in toxic mould spreading throughout the home. In those circumstances, Social Services felt they had no choice but to remove the children. Chava was contacted by JNF UK’s project Building Hope who sent in tradesmen to fix the problems in the home. In parallel, social workers supported Chava, helping her secure suitable employment and enhance her parenting skills. The children have now been granted weekend visits with the prospect of a permanent return in the near future. JNF UK is bringing this life-changing programme to hundreds more families in the Negev towns of Kiryat Gat and Kiryat Malachi, where unfortunately many people live below the poverty line. This work will be carried out alongside a host of other targeted JNF UK projects aimed at creating a lasting difference.

This Rosh Hashanah , help bring new hope to families like Chava’s.

Rosh Hashanah / New year greetings

NEW YEAR Communal and political leaders share their hopes and aspirations for a sweet and prosperous 5779 JONATHAN GOLDSTEIN Chairman, Jewish Leadership Council

THERESA MAY Prime Minister I would like to wish Jews across the United Kingdom and around the world a happy, peaceful and prosperous Rosh Hashanah. This special time of prayer and celebration is also an opportunity for many Jewish families to reflect on the challenges of the past year while looking to the months ahead with renewed hope. But it is also a time for all of us to celebrate the tremendous contribution that British Jews continue to make to their country. Whether in business, science, education, culture, or our armed forces, our Jewish community is an integral part of what makes Britain great. Sadly, the past year has also shown us that the shameful scourge of anti-Semitism remains in this country. It’s something I’m determined to stamp out: this should be a country where everyone can succeed in life, regardless of their faith or background, and nobody should ever face discrimination, abuse or violence because of who they are. So, as the Jewish New Year begins and the sound of the shofar is heard in synagogues around the UK, I want to renew my unwavering vow to stand by our Jewish community now and for the years to come. Happy new year.

MARK REGEV Israel’s Ambassador to the UK As we herald the New Year with our families and friends, this time of joy gives us an opportunity to celebrate our achievements and reflect upon the challenges we face. British Jewry has undergone one of the most difficult years in its recent history. Anti-Semitism has cast a dark shadow over public life, and the Community Security Trust’s recent report documented a record number of anti-Semitic incidents. These threats will not disappear suddenly, and must continue to be fought with vigour and vigilance. Israel’s 70th anniversary and the flourishing ties between our democracies offer us some good news. From the first official visit by a senior British Royal to the Jewish state by Prince William, to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trip to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration alongside Prime Minister Theresa May, the Israel-UK partnership is undoubtedly strong and growing stronger. I am proud that our countries’ ongoing cooperation in counterterrorism and intelligence is continuing to save British and Israeli lives, and that our bilateral trade has reached a record £6.9 billion. In fact, Israeli investment in the UK has increased by an astonishing 97 percent in the last year alone, creating hundreds of new jobs in Britain. In my two years as ambassador, I have been heartened by the Jewish community’s resilience in the face of strife, and encouraged by its optimism, ingenuity and dedication: qualities I know will serve us all well in the year to come. As we enter 5779, I wish you and your loved ones a shana tova.

Last year, my pre-Rosh Hashanah message to JLC members came on the heels of our annual meeting with the prime minister. Highlighting the partnership we have across government, I spoke of our community’s robust institutions, about the importance of political engagement to promote Jewish life in the UK and about how it has never been better to be Jewish in Britain. Unfortunately, the intervening months have caused tremendous concern and, as we approach Rosh Hashanah once more, there is only one issue on our minds: the antiSemitism prevalent in Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party. Our community is under attack. In March, for the first time in decades, we all took to the streets demanding that those who purportedly preach anti-racism stand up against Jew-hate. Alas, we have been left wanting. As I write, Labour has just adopted the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism in its entirety, but they only did so kicking and screaming. Moreover, adopting IHRA is not a panacea. Labour needs to root out the anti-Semites it has allowed to metastasise in its midst; and to ensure that Jews can be Jews in Labour as any other party member can be. When we met with Mr Corbyn in late April together with the Board of Deputies and the Community Security Trust, we put six reasonable requests to him. He has failed on every single point and, since then, his associations with terrorists and his own views have been exposed for all to see. It is incompatible to fight anti-Semitism while befriending for decades anti-Semites and those who wish to harm Jews. It is incompatible to fight anti-Semitism while one’s actions speak to a deep belief that Israel has no right to exist and that her supporters are illegitimate citizens, foreigners living in the UK. We are determined to stand up to hatred, the institutions I talked about last year have proven to be invaluable and the defence of our community is a reflection of our resilience. Despite this challenge, we should be proud that we live in a place and time in Jewish history when we have the ability to fight for ourselves and many friends who stand with us. We will continue working for our community to ensure a successful year ahead. We will not allow our wonderful vibrant community to be defined by those who do not have our interests at heart. Shana tova and gmar chatima tova.

RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER Senior Rabbi, Movement of Reform Judaism It would be too easy to say this year has been challenging. We all know there are worrying trends in our society and community. The continuing, disgraceful anti-Semitism within some sections of the Labour Party; our increasing polarisation and inability to communicate with ‘the other side’ concerning developments in Israel – we are all too aware of the struggles we continue to address into the new year of 5779. To focus only on these negatives would do our community a disservice. These problems, however serious, cannot monopolise our attention. This has also been a year in which some of our charities have reached new heights, where we have seen women make huge strides in communal leadership, and where we have come together as one to mark major anniversaries such as Balfour 100 and Israel 70. Even in facing the negatives, we have shown our strength and resolve. There are positives to build on in the year ahead. It is so well-known that it has become a joke: Jews love to focus on the negative. We are right to reach this Rosh Hashanah with a lot on our collective minds. It is right that we continue to take robust action in the face of adversity. It is also a time to celebrate the tremendous achievements we have accomplished together. For every challenge we face, we have been given countless blessings. I hope that this year we can cherish every one of them.

New year greetings / Rosh Hashanah

WISHES RABBI JOSEPH DWECK Senior Rabbi, The S&P Sephardi Community

One of the great highs of this year was the celebration of the Balfour Declaration centennial. It not only marked the dawning of the rebirth of Israel, but also the deep ties Britain had with its inception. The week of celebrations ended with a candlelit service in the hallowed sanctuary of Britain’s oldest synagogue, Bevis Marks, the crown jewel of my community. It was Britain that made the declaration in favour of a Jewish homeland, and Britain who fought to end the wicked tyranny of Nazi Germany. For a golden hour in world history, the glory of the world’s goodness and light were the British crown and the Union Jack. It is disheartening, however, to witness in Britain a growing darkness. The spectre of anti-Semitism returns to haunt us from within its Labour Party. The Jews of Britain are rightfully anxious and distraught. The country’s future teeters on a precipice. On one side, the firm ground of its historic strength and leadership towards freedom and justice and, on the other, the dark abyss of hatred prejudice from which it will not recover. We can and must vote against it. But as people in covenant with God, we must couple our political clout with our spiritual strength. This Rosh Hashanah, the call of our shofar in every synagogue must be coupled with the heartfelt pleas of those hearing it – the hearts of Britain’s Jews – to God, that Britain not fall to the evils against which she risked her best and brightest to defend. May the blast of the shofar herald hope for the future of Britain and the Jewish people.

MARIE VAN DER ZYL President, Board of Deputies 5778 will be remembered as the year the community came together to say ‘Enough is Enough’ to anti-Semitism. It was unprecedented to see so many from all parts of the community join like-minded non-Jews at Westminster in March to protest against the anti-Semitism that is tolerated in our country’s official party of opposition. I was gratified by the speed of the response from the 2,000 people who travelled to Westminster to stand with more than 30 MPs and friends from other faith communities. Never has our community made a more powerful statement. We will never agree on everything, but there is a right and a wrong way to disagree. While we must fight against prejudice, much of my work as Board president is promoting projects aiming for a positive outcome and I prioritise interfaith work, in particular, creating links with Muslim partners. For Israel’s 70th anniversary, we have been promoting a dialogue for peace through Invest in Peace with Christian communities. Prince William’s visit to Israel showed he is a man with a genuine warmth for the Jewish people and, going into 5779, amid all the political turmoil this year, the image of the Duke, both at the Western Wall, and playing football on the beach, gives me wonderful memories to take into the new year. May this Rosh Hashanah bring you, your families and all of Am Yisrael, health, strength and peace.

RABBI DANNY RICH Chief Executive, Liberal Judaism The Jewish community celebrates its highs: the inspirational work of Jewish Care, the transformative UJIA-sponsored Israel tours, the committed work of rabbis and congregants and the solid political work of the Board of Deputies – to name but a few. Nevertheless, the month of Elul and the coming Yamim Noraim are more suited to a time of introspection and an acknowledgement of what we have failed to do. And perhaps, for me, the saddest low in the Jewish community as we head into 5779 is our inability to tolerate difference within. We seem unable to hold passionate but civilised conversations about, for example, Israel and Zionism, the Labour Party and anti-Semitism. I was brought up in a Jewish home where difference and debate were welcomed to sharpen the minds of the interlocutors and perhaps teach something to one

or more participants. However heated or passionate the debate became, it never lowered itself to insult, anger and the questioning of the motives of any person who held a differing opinion. It is a cause of great sadness to me that in the past year the British Jewish community has appeared unable to model such civilised debate. Al Chet Shechatanu L’Fanecha: For the sin we have committed against You by insulting our opponents and resorting to anger instead of rational debate, forgive us. We can and must vote against it. But as people in covenant with God, we must couple our political clout with our spiritual strength. At this Rosh Hashanah, the call of our shofar in every prayer hall must be coupled with the heartfelt pleas of those hearing it – the hearts of Britain’s Jews – to God, that Britain not fall to the evils against which she risked her best and brightest to defend. May the blast of the shofar herald hope for the future of Britain and the Jewish people.

RABBI NICKY LISS Highgate Synagogue & Chair, Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue Preparing for the High Holy Days gives us an opportunity to reflect on the past year and, over the past 12 months, our community has enjoyed some memorable highlights, but faced a number of challenges. My highlight of the year was the long-awaited Royal visit to Israel as part of her 70th anniversary celebrations. The vision of Prince William standing at the Kotel with the Chief Rabbi was enormously significant and inspiring. Our wonderful charities have increased our care for and contribution to the Jewish community, wider British society and beyond. Interfaith initiatives are also growing in quantity and quality, one of which enabled me to fulfil a lifetime ambition of hitting a boundary at Lord’s during a multifaith cricket match in July! Unfortunately, this year has been dominated by the very real anti-Semitism crisis festering in the Labour Party, and I was saddened to have to help coordinate the communal letter that rocketed the issue back to the national debate. We have also seen a rise in hate speech (primarily on social media) at both extremes of the political spectrum. Because of this, it would be easy to overlook our communal achievements this year. Furthermore, the Jewish community has stood impressively resolute and united throughout. I would like to thank the Board of Deputies, Jewish Leadership Council and Community Security Trust for their strong leadership, and wish them and all other communal bodies, as well as the entire Jewish community, a year filled with only good health, success and tranquillity.

RABBI JONATHAN WITTENBERG Senior Rabbi, Masorti Judaism UK The connection between Gareth Southgate and Yom Kippur won’t seem obvious. I rarely watch football. All I saw of the World Cup were three-minute highlights. But I remember when Gareth Southgate missed his penalty in Euro ’96. I wondered how he could live with the failure, the public humiliation. It would haunt him forever. Then, 22 years later, he led England to the semi-finals with confidence and hope. Chet, the most used word on Yom Kippur for sin, means missing the target. We confess our misses and mistakes in order to learn and change. I know nothing about Gareth Southgate’s inner journey, but I wish our generation could learn from past errors like he has. This year has highlighted two vast wrongs. The first is racism and anti-Semitism. It’s not only the hurtful way the Labour leadership has failed to face its reality. It’s the growth of xenophobia, hate speech and violence worldwide. We will survive only if we confront our bigotry and create societies that uphold liberty, equality and justice for all. We must stand up and speak out for these ideals here, in Israel, and across the globe. The second is plastic and pollution. Rosh Hashanah is the world’s birthday. One doesn’t celebrate someone’s special day, then trash their home. The world belongs to God, and to our children and children’s children. We have no right to ruin it, and urgent reason to clean it up. It’s a basic question of survival. I pray that we, who have missed so many chances, learn well from our mistakes.

After suffering a life unimaginable by most of us, Avi came to live in Neveh Hadassah Youth Village in Israel. He enjoyed running and after hearing about an annual event to run up the 1144 steps of the Azrieli building in Tel-Aviv, he set up a Youth Village running club and achieved his dream of participating. Avi said, “The teachers told me, ‘If you can dream it you can do it’ and I did it, I made it happen!” Avi recently graduated and is poised to become a leader of his community, ready to serve as a role model for younger generations. Today more than 400,000 children in Israel have been deemed at-risk by welfare authorities. With decades of experience, we know how to take them from ‘survival to leadership’. Yet it was the unsung heroes of the community who commanded the limelight at the inaugural Jewish News-LABS’ Night of Heroes. Three years in the planning, the dinner attracted nearly 500 guests for a heady mixture of laughter and tears, as 21 videos beautifully produced by Inspired Films told the often moving stories of our fantastic finalists; from the young amputee defying the odds to pursue his dream of sporting triumph to the parents who set up a school for children with special educational needs and the teacher whose quick actions saved a collapsed pupil. Lifetime achievement recipient Lord Sacks’ offer to convert host David Walliams to Judaism provided one of the more unlikely moments of the night, but nothing better captured the selfless spirit of so many in the room than when retired surgeon Norman Rosenbaum handed over his award to young mum Kerry Rosenfield, who has collected millions for research into the disease afflicting her son. Prince William even managed to upstage Queen Netta, the Eurovision song contest winner during his historic visit to Israel

Prince William’s visit to Israel It may have taken 70 years for a senior royal to touch down in Israel on an official visit, but it was certainly worth the wait. Jewish News joined the royal press pack and Prince William on RAF Voyager for the historic trip to Jordan, Israel and the territories in June, reporting on his every move (right down to the King David Hotel’s plans to welcome him with scones and jam that was, somewhat amusingly, picked up by much of the national press) in a region previously deemed too hot to handle for British royalty. He was thanked by kindertransport evacuees for the refuge Britain gave them during a visit to Yad Vashem, played football with Arab and Jewish children at a UJIA-backed project and enjoyed a rock star’s reception in trips to Tel Aviv beach and Rothschild Boulevard, where calls of ‘William, William’ managed to outstrip even those for Israel’s current singing Queen Neta. There was certainly no shortage of memorable images for our 16-page souvenir supplement. But for many British Jews, it was the image of the future king, hand outstretched on the kotel, that provided the most moving moment of a tour widely seen as seminal in William’s growth on the world stage.

A Year at 70th anniversary celebration

Our 70th anniversary glossy magazine toasting Israel’s famous citizens

Take a brief stroll in Israel and you’d struggle to miss signs of the indelible mark left by Britons, Jewish and not, on the country. But never before has there been an exhaustive list of the olim from Britain who’ve made a telling contribution to the state; from politics to the media and the business to the arts. Until this year, that is. In November, Jewish News – with the Jewish Agency and UJIA – unveiled our Aliyah 100 list featuring 70 living figures such as Efraim Halevy and Daniel Taub and Fleur Hassan-Nahoum and 30 who have passed away including greats like Abba Eban and Chaim Herzog and David Landau. Many of those selected by our panel of judges, chaired by Andrew Gilbert, joined a landmark reception hosted by British Ambassador David Quarrey at which our number one, 91-year-old educator and social activist Alice Shalvi, stressed the importance of ensuring the next generation of olim pursue the ideals of Israel’s founding fathers. Natan Sharansky, in one of his last appearances as Jewish Agency chair, joked such

a list of luminaries was produced partly though “cheating”, as several top figures born in the Russian Empire should be on “our list”. The list was launched on the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, when Jewish News and BICOM hosted our latest policy conference in Parliament, in partnership with the Balfour 100 group.

The front page produced by three Jewish newspapers (left) and (above) the exclusive interview with Corbyn

Anti-Semitism and Labour

There’s no doubting which story dominated the headlines this year – and not just in the Jewish media. Non-stop revelations around the Labour party’s anti-Semitism crisis – and increasingly about the leader himself – are threatening to tear the party apart. Our exclusive interview with Jeremy Corbyn in March – the first time he’s sat down with any Jewish media outlet since winning the job – came in the week of the historic Enough is Enough rally in Parliament Square and his acknowledgement of ‘pockets’ of anti-Semitism. But instead of building relations, his answers were summed up in our front page headline: ‘Not Good Enough!’ He referred to the group who had staged a counter-demo to the one run by the Board of Deputies and JLC as ‘good people’ and failed to open up on how he personally feels to be accused of antiSemitism. His response when challenged about his repeated attendance at al Quds Day parades epitomised the frustrating encounter: CORBYN: There must be a just solution to the conflict. JN: But Hezbollah’s flag has a gun on it. You marched with that flag. CORBYN: I don’t support Hezbollah. JN: So you shouldn’t have been at the march? CORBYN: I’d rather the flag hadn’t been… JN: And you? CORBYN: I was on a march for the Palestinian

people. The settlement and the occupation must end. If a week is a long time in politics, the six months since then have seemed like an eon, with the Labour leader proving he has more political lives than a cat and frustration, anger and mistrust mounting by the day. As reflected in the unprecedented stand by the Jewish News, Jewish Chronicle and Jewish Telegraph in publishing the same front page editorial after Labour’s failure to adopt all examples accompanying the International Holocaust Remembrance definition of anti-Semitism.

Moving Forward

While there has been much to concern Anglo-Jewry in recent months, Jewish News is determined to celebrate all that is positive and vibrant in our midst. We will be unveiling our latest plans to do just that in the coming few weeks. Following a historic collaboration with British Muslim TV and Church Times, we will also publish our Twenty-one 21st century leaders list in November, profiling the young Christians, Muslims and Jews at the forefront of the enhancing interfaith understanding and cooperation in the UK. It is the first time anywhere in the world that media outlets from different faiths have collaborated in this way and there will be a reception at Lambeth Palace with those chosen by our expert panel.

CARD LUCK STORY Brigit Grant reflects on the demise of the new year greeting

C

hances are that any Rosh Hashanah greetings you get this year, will be in your inbox, along with the work emails, Amazon offers and discounts for Viagra.. A shana tova card in an envelope on the doormat has become a novelty and likely to have been sent by a distant aunt who thinks Wi-Fi has a husband. Yet there was a time when yom tov cards lined our mantelpiece, many of them embossed with gold doves and a personalised family message from Tzeitel and Motel. The earliest shana tova greeting appeared in the 14th century letter as a letter written by an Ashkenazi German rabbi known as the Maharil. But it took off in the 18th century, with the custom spreading beyond the German-speaking realm to the Jews in Eastern Europe who saw the appeal, but could care less about the design. Artistry only kicked in by the end of the century, when Rosh Hashanah cards began to take on distinct characteristics, such as special writing paper and this tradition continued throughout the Ashkenazi world during the 19th century. The arrival of a postal service in the 1880s was the cue for Jewish entrepreneurs to begin printing commercial new year greeting

cards featuring traditional symbols or illustrations depicting events in Jewish history and with the advent of the Zionist movement, new year cards became a platform for conveying ideological messages and Zionist perspectives. Alas this meant there were no jokes. but there were portraits of Theodor Herzl, the Ottoman Sultan and Captain Dreyfus. The cards were also for encouraging fundraising and included a calendar created by the JNF. In the years after the state of Israel was established, the cards featured pics of farms (happy) and the immigration struggle (sad). The image of a Jewish soldier was also very common, whether that soldier was in European uniform during the Franco-Prussian War, the First and Second World Wars or the struggle in Palestine. With the establishment of the Israel Defense Force during the War of Independence, it was the Israeli soldier dominating that generation’s Israeli new year cards, especially between the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. With the vast majority of Israelis not having telephones in their homes, mail was the standard method of communication and, as Rosh Hashanah approached, the volume of envelopes would peak, with postmen carrying enormous leather bags stuffed with mail. Sadly with the advent of mass communication, the new year card declined in popularity both in the Jewish world and in Israel. Today, a text with a thin emoji wishing one well over the fast is the most you can hope for, unless you have a technophobic relative who still sends a card. For the sake of nostalgia just one card would be nice.

The Australianborn rabbi who now lives in New York is taking the art world by storm with his Warholian-style graphic paintings that are all Jewish in theme, but relatable to anyone. “My parents were hippies,” explains the father of five who will be 40 “on the 20th of Elul” and he attributes this unconventional start in life to his artistic career. Yitzchok didn’t set out to be an artist, but he was an equally unlikely rabbinical candidate as there was very little Jewish presence in his birthplace of Darwin or what he calls “the capital of nowhere”. His mother, however, was spiritual and he recalls her meditating by a creek on Yom Kippur as an alternative to traditional prayers. A move to Melbourne because of his grandfather’s ailing health lead to Yitzchok’s mother going to synagogue and ultimately sending her only son to a Jewish school. That, together with the influence

of Chabad, was a religious turning point that almost took them to Israel. “My parents saved up with a view to moving to LA, then New York and, finally, Israel to live on a kibbutz, but we landed in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in time for Rosh Hashanah and after that we were advised by the Lubavitcher Rebbe to stay there for a while as we were at a cross-road in our life.” Those who regard a move from Edgware to Bushey as monumental will be baffled by the Moully exodus, particularly as his father did not go with them. But Yitzchok reflects on those 4 ½ years in an alien Chasidic community as “spiritually absorbing” and an affirmation of his faith. They returned to Melbourne, but by then Yitzchok knew he wanted to be a rabbi and he went to study in New York. Soon after, he met his wife Batsheva in Toronto ,and together they began their lives as youth directors at a Chabad centre in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Until this point, art – or even a paintbrush

– were notable by their absence, although Yitzchok liked to dabble in photography, but purely as a hobby. It was only when he was introduced to silk screening that something clicked and he became enamoured with the process, first as a way of translating his photos into art, and then as a medium for his imagination. As a committed Jew, it was faith itself that inspired him, firstly depicting iconic symbols such as Kiddush cups and scrolls, and then dancing Chasidim in bright bold colours.

“I was completely absorbed in my art, which I did at night after fulfilling my rabbinical duties during the day,” he says. “But when the painting became all-consuming, I thought I should stop.” Turning to his own rabbi and mentor for guidance, he asked if he should abandon the art. “He told me, ‘The question isn’t should you paint? The question is, how can you take the gift God has given you and impact the world?’ I realised then that my mission isn’t just to be a Chabad rabbi, but to create work inspired by my love of Judaism and convey it in my own voice.” Leaving paid employment to follow his craft was a big step, but he knew it had to be done. “Lots of people can, and should be, rabbis, but nobody else can do my art.” And Batsheva was supportive as he set out to make a name for himself. His art work, Orange Socks, depicts the silhouettes of Chasidic men walking behind each other, one sporting vivid orange socks. “That is my self-portrait,” he laughs. “The orange socks are me because under the black hat there is a wealth of vibrant, colorful energy waiting to be released.” He is actually better known for wearing a pink kippah and floral shirts, but it was the orange socks that got the attention he needed and it was commissioned in larger- than-life-size form as a mural in the Jerusalem Biennale. He has done

Cover Story / Rosh Hashanah many murals since, but his popularity grew when he came up with ‘Poptho-dox’, a fusion of orthodoxy and pop art. “I had gone to Crown Heights one Tishrei to buy a lulav and esrog. While I was there, I came across a few guys selling them out of a small space and asked if I could rent it after Succos ended. I opened an art gallery there and used Facebook to publicise the show and invite other artists to participate. “I titled it Chasidim with Colour,” says Yitzchok. “So if you were Chasid and had colour to share, you were invited.” Each artist was charged $50 to cover costs, but he never anticipated the huge response as artists of all ages and abilities took up the offer. Yitzchok sold a piece of his own artwork that covered all his costs and, although the gallery was one night only, it led to him opening the Creative Soul gallery for Orthodox artists. The gallery ran for three years and is sorely missed, but Yitzchok’s reputation continues to grow. “I want my work to be accessible to the general public, in message and price tag. Some think my work should be edgier and not so sweet. But I’m a positive guy, and that’s what I want to share. I’m also working on preliminary plans to do a tour of the UK.” If you are in NYC, Yitzchok Moully: The Pop Art Rabbi is at The Jewish Museum of New Jersey from 16 September until 21 October. His work is available to view at the Metal Art Studio, 576 Central Ave, Cedarhurst, NY 11516, or online at www.moullyart.com

Rosh Hashanah / New Year Dishes

SAVOURING Seventy years Israel’s birthday celebration is the inspiration for Denise Phillips’ new year dishes, which are not only appealing to look at but are also good for breaking the fast.

VADI RESTAURANT PARTIES

WEDDINGS

BIRTHDAYS

Hummus is an Arabic word meaning chickpea. The dish is made from cooked mashed chickpeas blended with tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and seasoning, and my version with beetroot provides a vibrant and extra healthy addition to the classic recipe. Legend speaks of hummus as one of the oldest known prepared foods, even going back to the 12th century. In Israel and many other Middle Eastern countries, it is a key part of any mezze meal and eaten as a starter, snack or accompaniment.

New Year Dishes / Rosh Hashanah

Chocolate cinnamon babka Although this is a traditional Ashkenazi recipe with Polish origins, it has now become one of the most popular pastries in Israel. The word babka in Polish means grandmother – it refers to the layers and shape of the old type of pleated skirts that grandmothers used to wear. This sweet dough is like brioche and it is twisted and baked in a loaf tin and often enhanced with a streusel topping. As with many classic recipes, there are lots of variations in both method and ingredients. Popular fillings include almond, cream cheese and chopped nuts, but I love the cinnamon and chocolate combination.

MAKES 2 medium sized loaves

PREPARATION 30 minutes, plus 2 hours 45 minutes rising time COOKING TIME 25 minutes

Ingredients

Filling:

Glaze:

2 sachets dried yeast

100g dark chocolate –

1 egg yolk – whisked

200ml lukewarm milk

coarsely grated

85g caster sugar

55g butter – melted

Sugar Syrup:

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

200g caster sugar 200ml water half an orange - juice and zest

85g butter 4 egg yolks

Streusel Topping:

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons plain flour

425g strong white flour

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon salt

20g butter

METHOD

1

Whisk the yeast into the lukewarm milk and set aside for about five minutes.

2

In a mixer, cream together the sugar and butter until smooth.

3

Add the yolks to the bowl, one at a time, mixing constantly for 30 seconds between each addition. Add the vanilla and mix until light and fluffy.

4

Add the flour and salt and continue to mix until it all comes together.

5

Now add the milk and yeast mixture and let it mix until it forms a soft dough.

6

Knead by hand for another two to three minutes until the dough is soft and smooth.

7

Let this rise for about two hours.

8

Line and grease 2 x 1kg loaf tins with baking parchment.

9

For the filling: mix the chocolate, butter and cinnamon together in a bowl.

10 Once the dough has risen, cut it in half. Roll each half out on to a floured surface into a long rectangle of about 40cm with a thickness of 1-2cm. Spread the chocolate mixture on to each.

11

Pinch the seams to seal it, then roll it up like a swiss roll.

12

For the gorgeous twisty shape, cut the log down the middle lengthwise, making sure to keep the top end attached. Twist over each other to get the braided look.

13

Combine the streusel topping in the food processor until you have a breadcrumb mixture. Glaze the babka with egg yolk.

14

Add the streusel topping to the top of the twisted babka. Cover and prove for 45 minutes or until double in size. Transfer to a lined loaf tin.

15

Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 350°F and bake for 30-35 minutes.

16

Make the sugar syrup by bringing all the ingredients to the boil and simmering for about five minutes.

17

When the babka comes out of the oven, pour some syrup over it to give it a beautiful shine.

18

Cool on a rack before slicing.

The bread stays good for two to three days in an airtight box.

Kosher delivery/ Rosh Hashanah

KOSHER to the Door Debbie Colton has found an easier way to kashrut shop

N

ever let it be said that kashrut is a thorny issue but let’s be frank – it couldn’t be more thorny if you grew it on a tree with tons of thorns attached to it. But the fact remains, that many of us look to replicate what we know or teach what we believe to the next generation as part of the survival of our people and our customs. Sounds simple right – and yet somehow we have ended up with numerous boards telling us what is kosher, what is not and dependent on where you live/work/pray or eat you are likely to follow a different path. So as we head towards the biggies, Rosh Hashanah and Yom kippor the question of will we live or will we die is often usurped by the really big question – what will we eat? It is here that a true miracle seems to have occurred in the form of GoKo, the first serious online kosher mart in the UK aimed at bringing good quality kosher food to the market at reasonable (no one expects it to be cheap, let’s be frank) cost and even more amazingly with a simple, clear website and strategy for reaching out to those who want it. In some-ways it’s surprising it’s taken this long considering much of the technology comes from the brethren in the first place. Yet now it genuinely looks as though there is a real offer on the market. GoKo started life as koshernet, set up by Jeremy Teller in 1995 to meet the needs of the local community. It remains a reasonably priced kosher supermarket , with parking and hours to suit the needs of the Stamford Hill Jewish community. In 2016, Uriel Biton and Esti Levy realised there was a major hole in the kosher shopping world and with their campaign management and design backgrounds launched GOKO with koshernet at the hub. Bringing SAP technology on board they started to think country-wide. Currently GoKo have over 100 deliveries a day going out all across the UK. With local delivery at £3.99 and anywhere in the UK within 24 hours for £6.99. They are working fast towards building their own fleet of vans which will bring the UK wide delivery cost down and cut out the need for courier services resulting in faster turnaround too. The website is simple and totally transparent about each kashrut board, so you can pick and choose as suits. Impressively, the products are kept at the same prices you would buy at source, achieved by working closely with local suppliers to enable GoKO to offer excellent value whilst also providing a much needed and wanted service. The site also offers Judaica including a good range of Rosh Hashannah cards/napkins and a rather nice looking honey jar at prices that will

make gift buying for the high holy days rather less painful than usual! With a minimum order of £30, and let’s be fair you will never leave a kosher shop having spent any less than that so it’s unlikely to be a barrier to entry for anyone looking to keep a kosher home stocked and fed. Uriel Biton summed it up - “At GoKo we pride ourselves of being the one stop shop for all your household goods, saving you time and money by conveniently having it all under one roof”. Along with his business partner they have their sights set on building the business throughout Europe and continuing to promise no online price hikes ‘ever’! In the meantime while I will be getting online to save the dreaded Yom Tov shopping outing; Uriel will be spending his time ensuring all deliveries are made in time for it to be a truly sweet and happy New Year. ADVERTORIAL

Plan for perfection!

Deborah Cicurel speaks to the founder of Letizia Events about creating beautiful bespoke parties for her clients From watching the sun set over the sea to vast desert landscapes and enchanted forests, there are few places where Letizia Piatelli hasn’t worked her magic to create perfect bespoke events for her clients. Letizia started her boutique planning company, Letizia Events, 20 years ago and has since arranged everything from intimate celebrations for 60 guests to spectacular weddings for 800. “Planning parties in Israel is influenced by people coming from abroad,” she says. “Each client brings up a new idea or a new inspiration from his or her own country. There wasn’t much when I started, but now there have been so many ideas and we are able to produce very high-level events, from creating a venue in the middle of the desert to planning a wedding in Caesarea or Masada.” With clients coming from all over the world, including France, Gibraltar and the UK, as well as Panama, the USA and Brazil, Letizia works with a range of influences, and can create beautiful weddings, bar- and batmitzvahs and parties in Israel, as well as her native country, Italy.

She takes pride in her company providing a level of personalisation that makes its events stand out. “I don’t just want my guests to come to Israel and party,” she says. “It’s not just about the main event: I want to bring in meaning. “For example, if I have a barmitzvah, I will arrange for the guests to meet Israeli soldiers to help them to understand Israeli and Jewish values. “Another time, I arranged an event at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and I made sure guests could do tours related to their origins. It’s not just about making a party, it’s about bringing meaning to the celebrations.” Letizia is also very hands-on with her clients, whether they are a couple getting married or parents organising a barmitzvah. “I am very dedicated,” she says. “Once we start working together, I have a full relationship with the clients, meaning they can call me, consult with me and get very involved in the planning.” While planning events can present its challenges, Letizia has real passion for her work. “I love bringing it all together,” she says. “It usually takes six months to organise an event. You invest energy, stress, pressure, thought and money, and the most beautiful part of it is seeing the scene and elements all coming together.” www.letizia-events.com

Wine / Rosh Hashanah

Wine of

GOOD HOPE Louisa Walters uncorks a bottle of the kindest

H

ow things have changed. Not so long ago, Israel was not on any gourmet’s list for great food and wine, but now it is the hottest ticket on the planet for the former and evolving at a rate of knots with the latter. There are now more than 250 wineries in Israel, many of them boutique, and they are making wines of an exceptional quality. Dismiss with those preconceptions that Israeli wines are just of the sweet red variety. From the Negev in the south, to the Golan Heights in the north, there’s an impressive string of vineyards and an even more impressive range of wines. There are family-owned wineries, organic vineyards, wineries offering wining and dining experiences… And then there’s the Maia winery, which is very special indeed. Founded in 2012 by Roy Itzhaki, the Maia winery is situated in Kfar Tikvah – Israel’s Village of Hope. This was the first village in the world for people with disabilities, established in 1964 by Dr Siegfried Hirsch, who was dissatisfied with the available options for his developmentally disabled stepdaughter. He created a place where people with special needs could lead active, productive lives. This is the village from which Maia, sister label to the longer-stablished Tulip winery, employs the majority of its staff. The employees of these wineries have

a wide range of mental health issues. But don’t think for a minute that this makes anything but a positive contribution to the output. This is top quality winemaking combined with a humanitarian role in the community and has won many international awards. Maia employs 45 staff from the village and hopes to increase this, and up to 50 percent of the profits from some of the Maia wines are given to the village to help support it. This boutique winery produces kosher wines that are created to perfectly compliment the Israeli-Mediterranean spirit, climate and culture, fragrance and flavours. The production process is meticulous, from the hand picking and hand sorting of the grapes from top quality, well-established vineyards, right through to the bottling and the application of the artistic labels. To fully realise its vision and guarantee the quality of its creation, the winery sought two expert winemakers from Greece to join their team. Professor Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Professor Costas Bakiastas, who specialises in Mediterranean grape varietals and vines, combined their Mediterranean expertise with winemaker David Bar-Ilan’s Israeli roots to found this very special label. Maia Wines are available from 32°-34° Wines, specialist importers of boutique Israeli wines. http://32-34wines.co.uk

Once upon a COOKBOOK

Honey & Co: At Home: Middle Eastern Recipes from Our Kitchen by Sarit Packer & Itamar Srulovich

(Pavilion Books, £26)

Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich – affectionately known as The Honeys – the award-winning chefs behind the beloved Honey & Co. brand, recently published their third book, At Home, allowing readers to pull up a chair at their kitchen table and get a glimpse of their culinary lives at home. Organised into chapters For Us Two, For

Friends, For the Weekend, For a Crowd and The Kitchen, recipes include some of the couple’s favourites from their weekly FT column, some of their genuine home staples and a few of their most requested dishes. These include barbecued aubergine with jewelled rice salad, Royal Mansaf – slow-cooked lamb with saffron rice, almonds and golden raisins – and cherry and pistachio bakewell. I’m personally looking forward to making their chicken with plums, crisp salad with saffronpoached pears with walnut tahini, and the fig and feta pide.

popular around the world. Divided by region, Divine Food is a food lover’s guide to Israel, with information on the history of the immigrants from around the world who made the country their home and contributed to making its cuisine eclectic. Alongside the 103 recipes – which include Sephardic stuffed pastries, slow-roasted beef shoulder with onions, leek confit and fig and mascarpone tart as well as the more familiar ones – the book contains striking photographs of the food and culture. SIMPLE offers “standout recipes that will suit whatever type of cooking you find easy”. The 130 new recipes are categorised by the SIMPLE key: S – short on time: less than 30 minutes, I – 10 ingredients or less, M – make ahead, P – pantry, L – lazy and E – easier than you think. With vegan eating on the rise, this book by Estee Raviv will surely do well among the millennial generation – as well as those of any age who want to reduce their meat intake. Estee Raviv, who was born in Israel to a Romanian mother (whom she describes as an incredible cook and hostess),

by Susan Cohen (IMM Lifestyle Books, £9.99)

What better way to enjoy London than by taking afternoon tea in one of its sumptuous hotels or cafés? In this revised and expanded edition, academic historian Susan Cohen takes us into 50 of the best places to enjoy the famous British tradition in the capital. The pretty coffee-table book, which contains 38 new venues added to this new hardback edition, includes classics such as Claridge’s and The Wolseley as well as unexpected venues such as the Balthazar and Cadogan Gardens. Happily, Susan advises that there’s a tea to suit all budgets. And the bakers among us can recreate some of the famous recipes at home – why not try the classic buttermilk scones from the Intercontinental on Park Lane, or The Lanesborough’s Rocher praline?

SHANA TOVA TRE

Brigit Grant has suggestions for new-season style

CLUELESS Who doesn’t love a trend that reinstates the iconic Cher Horowitz? In sunshine plaid, Alicia Silverstone won the hearts and minds of young girls with her kooky fashion sense and Versace had her in mind with their 90s take on tweed. Zara has some great separates (I love Zara) but Prince of Wales heritage or tartan is available in many forms.

Forgive me for saying this, but hasn’t Rosh Hashanah always been the signal for a new fashion season? That first tekiyah heralds the countdown to British Fashion Week (an unfortunate collision for those of the faith who make clothes) and the arrival of new styles for autumn/winter on the high street. When I was small, my mum took me to Jennifer’s in Hendon for that special shul outfit, but as an adult one is forced to deal with those chagim dressing dilemmas alone. I’m not sure the trends for the season will provide you with the look required for prayers at West London or Kinloss, but those who like to model something of the moment may be daring enough to give these looks a go. You may even have them in your wardrobe as there are not many seasonal surprises. MODESTY ABLAZE #ME TOO and Time’s Up is a difficult concept to convey on the runway, but covering the female silhouette has been achieved by the likes of Max Mara and Balenciaga. Erdem has even put prim shirts under an evening dress while others have kept hemlines low and necklines high. The most shocking trend is the knitted balaclava, which will keep you warm but could alert security when worn in a store. Calvin Klein put them on his models , but I still prefer Zara’s hoodie anorak.

Faux leather mini with pockets £19.99 Zara

BEYOND THE FRINGE Fringing is more refined this season and once again Zara meets the challenge with simple dresses and knitwear. Skirts with trailing ties layered over boots will be a big hit. Tweed coat £29.99 Zara

Dress £65 Oliver Bonas

Printed blouse with bow £29.99 Zara

TETHER THE LEATHER The tough fabric dominates as the nights draw in, so you’ll be wanting a skirt, trousers and trench coat. To lighten the mood, go for something in green or sable. Long as it’s leather or faux.

SADDLE UP Prairie dresses and cowboy boots may just pass the test as a synagogue combo and work if the weather is warm. You probably have the boots, but there are some stylish ankle offerings and they even work with a big coat.

Embroidered leather cowboy boots £99.99 Zara

Rosh Hashanah / Health

Important test for cancer genes In May 2013, Angelina Jolie shared with the world that she had inherited from her mother a harmful gene, which was a mutation called BRCA1. In Angelina’s family history, there had been significant numbers of women over several generations who had been affected by breast cancer. She had taken the decision to undergo bilateral risk-reducing mastectomies together with reconstructive breast surgery, to reduce her otherwise elevated breast cancer risk by more than 90 percent. Multiple cancers in a family tree, particularly occurring at a young age, are highly suggestive of inherited predisposing gene mutation. Professor Andrew Baildam, consultant breast surgeon at King Edward VII’s Hospital, explains more about BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations and what this means for women in the Jewish community: What are BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations? The structure and functions of the body are controlled and

determined by the genes that are expressed within individual cells. It is thought that 25 percent of breast cancers that occur at a young age are due to mutations in the high-risk genes BRCA1, BRCA2 and TP53. There are families where it is possible to be certain of a dominant inherited susceptibility gene mutation. How much does having a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer, particularly within the Jewish community? Family and population based scientific studies have found that 70-85 percent of individuals who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation develop breast cancer at some time over their lifespan. This risk is similar for all individuals who carry these genes, regardless of ethnicity; however the Ashkenazi Jewish heritage has a significant incidence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers. The background risk in the overall female UK population of developing breast cancer is about one in nine, or 11 percent, so the risk to a gene mutation carrier is seven to eight times higher than that in the general population. Who should consider genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations? In families where over several generations there have been four or more individuals affected by breast cancer at an early age, or with bilateral breast cancers, the risk of any unaffected woman in that family inheriting a breast cancer related gene mutation is

around one in two. Any woman with a significant family history may consider gene testing, as well as any woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age. Testing, though, should not be undertaken without a fully informed discussion with a medical professional on at least two occasions, to examine both the possible benefits as well as harms that could arise from a test result.  Professor Baildam runs The Breast Health Centre at King Edward VII’s Hospital. Faster treatment – and peace of mind.

Prioritise your health and get back to doing the things you love...

Spire Bushey Hospital has, over the past year, seen a marked increase in patients paying for their own treatment, as more and more people chose to prioritise their health and ‘fast track’ their healthcare journey. For some it may be that the waiting times are just too long, while others have found their required treatment is no longer available on the NHS. For those without private medical insurance, ‘self pay’ can be the route to faster treatment and a quicker return to normal life.

If paying for your treatment is the pathway you decide on, at Spire Bushey Hospital you will receive fast access to consultant appointments and diagnostics, at a time that suits you. Should you require treatment, you will be given a fixed ’all inclusive’ price, with the reassurance that there will be no hidden costs or unexpected bills along the way. With our fixed-price packages you can rest assured that the only thing on your mind during your hospital stay will be getting back to full health and doing the things you love.

PURE APPLES Brigit Grant beauty shops for new year ingredients Valmont have a super deluxe range, Essence of Bees, which includes royal jelly and honey, sourced from Switzerland. It is very pricey, but the research that extends to them cultivating their own bees justifies the cost. Its Cure Majestueuse (£242) anti-ageing beauty serum feels amazing upon application, and it releases powerful omegas, along with the honey, propolis, and royal jelly. It is particularly beneficial for damaged, dry or mature skin as it boosts elasticity and firmness. Vakmont also makes Sérum Majestueux Vos Yeux (£275), which lifts the upper eyelid, firms the area and plumps out the lines and creases. boutiquevalmont.com

Dip the apple in the honey, make a bracha loud and clear could almost be skincare instructions. Both are used for their natural properties in face products and a lot of women pray the creams will work. For the record, apples contain skin brightening vitamin A, in the form of retinoids, which helps to build healthy skin, and they reduce the risk of cancer. Honey is naturally antibacterial, so it’s great for preventing and treating acne and it’s is full of antioxidants that slow down ageing and it moisturises skin. Now you know the science, here are the new products containing them to try as part of your new year regime.

Manuka Honey Enhancing Whitening Cream (£16) is a concentrated crème containing premium certified Manuka Honey 80+. The high grade honey sorts out uneven skin tone and rehydrates it at the same time. THE HONEY MAN One of the great joys of this job is finding out that someone unexpected is Jewish, and Burt Shavitz beats them all. It turns out the eponymous founder of Burt’s Bees was one of us and that makes all the years I’ve used his lip salve even more special. The company, which now produces every kind of skin care and make-up products (the gloss lip product is sublime), was started by Burt the beekeeper and hitchhiker Roxanne Quimby, whose earth mother instincts led her to making candles from Burt’s beeswax. The rest is history and although the duo parted ways professionally, the company was eventually sold for $925 million. Although he was thought of as a hippie from the backwaters, Shavitz was born in New York, served in the army and shot photos for Time Life magazine. Despite the sale, Shavitz lived in a small cluttered house in Maine with no running water until he died aged 80 in 2015. Puts a new perspective on the lip salve.

I KNOW I SAY IT EVERY YEAR as one of my Rosh Hashanah resolutions, but this year I will go to the Pilates balancing ball. And the step machine and the bench press. Another summer on the beach feeling more like Rosanne Barr than Bar Rafaeli has left me tanned but still desperately in need of trimming and toning. So once again I’m heading to The Laboratory in Mill Hill (millhill.labspa.co.uk) and, after the fast, I will start my post-chagim diet and sign up for three of its fabulous classes each week. Then I’ll rely on the trainers to explain (again) where the handles on the machines and which equipment targets muffin tops and inner thighs. In a single morning at The Lab in Mill Hill you can BodyPump, Zumba, group cycle and ultimate condition before heading for a swim in the fabulous pool. Get there on the right day and you may even see boxing champ Anthony Joshua stretching his muscles. I can’t promise he’ll be there, but you will see me!

S.O.S. – Save Our Skin After tanning, skin needs a big drink. The effort to be the brownest one on the Broadway has left your dermis parched, and so you will need:

Green People’s Hydrating After Sun (£10.50) is a cooling and moisture-binding aftersun lotion rich in aloe vera and calendula. It minimises peeling, prolongs your tan and makes you smell deliciously of peppermint. greenpeople.co.uk Also worth a try is Green People’s Beauty Boost Skin Restore (£20), which plumps and recharges the skin like a mini facial with green marine algae, wakame, seaweed and everlasting flower. Available through greenpeople.co.uk as well as Waitrose, Ocado and Whole Foods. Writing about beauty, I get to try many products and Radara (£199) is one of the revolutionary kinds, as it rejuvenates skin around the eyes with ‘micro-needling’ but no needles. Instead there are 60 angular eye-shaped microchannelling patches (a month’s supply) that are placed initially to create a ‘channel’ and then reapplied with a high purity natural hyalu-

ronic acid serum that hydrates the deep areas beneath the crows’ feet and kickstarts collagen formation, which is much needed after roasting in the sun. See radara.co.uk for stockists. Embryolisse Smoothing Eye Contour Care Cream (£24.99) is really impressive. I used it day and night through my holiday and saw a visible change in the lines and puffiness around my eyes. The cream contains a combination of vitamins and hyaluronic acid, which helps

to retain moisture and plant stem cells that help skin cells regenerate themselves. I can’t recommend it enough and this is also true of the Embryolisse Intense Anti-Fatigue Cream (£39.99), which made me look brighter and less haggard weeks before my hols. It’s a really lush cream and a little goes a long way with this cocktail of more hyaluronic acid and natural sugars. boots.com/search/embryolisse And finally …. don’t give up the tan too easily – give Green People’s Certified organic Gradual Tan Moisturiser (£16.50) a go. With prebiotics and antioxidants, it will give you a light glow until that next holiday.

A very happy

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School Advertorial / Rosh Hashanah

Nurturing EXCELLENCE Introducing the new headmaster of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School

It’s always exciting when a new headteacher joins a school – and even more so when that school is an established one such as Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School. Gus Lock starts at the beginning of this autumn term and is an Old Haberdasher (1994). He studied ancient and modern history at Exeter College, Oxford and, more recently, was head at Warwick School for five years. He succeeds Peter Hamilton, who is retiring as after 16 years of outstanding service. The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School’s philosophy to nurture excellence in all areas of school life is clearly evident in 2018. The academic success of this year’s group of boys sits alongside successes in sport, drama, music, art and community service. The 2018 A-level results were outstanding across the board: 42 percent of all grades were awarded A*, 80 percent between A*- A and 38 pupils (25 percent) gained three

or more A* grades. Once again, 20 percent of pupils have been offered Oxbridge places, something we are proud to achieve year in, year out. Our programme blends academic and co-curricular activities in an environment that truly allows the boys to thrive. The quality, inclusivity and variety of our programme is second to none, and at Habs we believe there is a direct correlation between academic success and achievement in other areas. Nowhere is this more evident than in our four captains of sport, who all excelled academically in addition to their significant contributions to their chosen sport. Michael Miller, captain of rugby and school vice-captain, achieved A*A*A and will read natural sciences at Cambridge; Ricky Thake, captain of football, was awarded A*A*A* and will read theology at Nottingham; Naresh Rasakulasuriar, captain of cricket, achieved A*A*A*A* and will study engineering at Cambridge;

Dillon Kurani, captain of hockey, was awarded A*A*A*A and will study economics at LSE. “The support from Habs was incredible,” said Dillon Kurani, captain of hockey. “Thanks must go to my teachers at Habs for going above and beyond,” enthused Max Goldstone, school captain, who will read medicine at Bristol after achieving straight A*s. This year’s GCSE results were also exceptional, and even better

than last year. The new examination system has produced a much more rigorous evaluation, but the boys have accepted this challenge, which has only allowed them to shine further. More than 93 percent of all the results were between A*- A (grades 9-7). These impressive results include 97 percent gaining an A* in maths; 84 percent achieving A* in all three sciences; 96 percent in theology, and all three boys taking

Russian earned an A*. An amazing 22 percent achieved straight A*s. There is much to celebrate and these results are very promising for the future of the school. Congratulating the boys, staff and parents on their hard work, Mr Lock said: “These outstanding GCSE results demonstrate, at the very highest level, the breadth and depth of skills which will enable these young men to thrive in an increasingly complex future.”

Rosh Hashanah / Charity

A YEAR AT CAMP SIMCHA The charity that gives parents respite offers even more help

N

ew services have been at the forefront of Camp Simcha’s activities this year with a focus on extending respite care provision; support groups for specific conditions and services for premature and seriously ill newborns. The charity’s new Evie’s Night Owls respite project was launched in October by Sam and Lee Bladon in memory of their three-year-old daughter Evie, who sadly passed away in 2015. The couple have fundraised tirelessly to enable Camp Simcha to provide regular, ongoing night-time respite service to families who need it. To date, they and their supporters have raised £45,000. New support groups were created for parents of children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and those with diabetes. “With cystic fibrosis, the service we provide has to be slightly

different,” explains Camp Simcha’s head of services. “Our medical panel have advised that there can be a serious health risk associated with cross infection – children with cystic fibrosis are vulnerable to different bacteria, which grow in their lungs. While these bugs are usually harmless to people who don’t have cystic fibrosis, they can be easily transmitted from one person with CF to another and very harmful. “So, while our other families mix together at outings, parties and retreats, our CF families cannot come to these. We try to fill the gap by organising special outings and treats for them as a family, but it does mean that parents miss out on that opportunity to talk to others in a similar situation. With this in mind, we set up a support group for CF parents. “With diabetes, families are with us for a shorter time and we can make a difference in that initial period after diagnosis – supporting families while

Fundraiser Adam Pollock and team on their sponsored digital detox and, right, Sam and Lee Bladon of Evie’s Night Owls

they learn to manage the condition. “However, with this condition, often the same issues and questions arise – from brands of pumps to the impact of hormone changes. The support group is a great way for parents to connect and share advice.” Another service having an impact in terms of short-term emergency support is the premature baby service. Caroline Dux, a nurse in the

neonatal unit at University College Hospital is using her expertise to deliver this for Camp Simcha. Initially, the charity offers help to families who are in hospital with premature or seriously ill newborns, and then Caroline offers hands-on support when needed at home. On the fundraising front, Camp Simcha’s biggest ever Manchester

dinner raised a record £240,000, while former corsetiere to the Queen, June Kenton, entertained guests at the charity’s Ladies’ Brunch, which raised £65,000. A new fundraising initiative came from former Camp Simcha service user Adam Pollock, whose family was supported by the charity after he was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL), aged five. To mark his barmitzvah this year, Adam came up with a 24-hour sponsored digital detox which got 13-yearolds ditching their screens for community work and this is now part of the b’nei mitvah programme, raising £6,500 to date. This year’s Ladies’ Brunch is on 6 November, and the biennial London dinner on 4 March 2019.  For more information about Camp Simcha services or events, see campsimcha.org.uk or call 020 8202 9297

Honey Bunny / Rosh Hashanah

TAKING THE HONEY OUT OF THE CAKE Along with dipping apples into yummy honey, Alex Galbinski finds other uses for the sweet stuff BAKING So the bakers among us will know this, but the reason honey is used in baking (Rosh Hashanah honey cake, anyone?) is because it is sweeter than sugar, so less of it can be used. But did you know that honey cake is also traditional in Russia, where it’s called medovik? With its biscuit base and cream layers, it is very different from the Jewish version, but looks equally delicious. A spokeswoman for Beyond Bread, a gluten-free bakery in London that sells the cake based on a secret family recipe (it also sells challah), told me honey is widely celebrated in Russian folklore and was once regarded as a sacred treat. Their version is topped with thick sour cream icing. Mmmm. TO MAKE PAINTS Honey is used in some watercolour paints – whether home-made or shop-bought (such as these ones by M. Graham & Co) – to lock in moisture, create stronger colours and make the paint easier to work with.

AS A POSSIBLE PREVENTATIVE FOR HAY FEVER Many people swear by eating local honey ahead of the pollen season, in a bid to reduce or cure symptoms such us a runny nose, sneezing, puffy eyes and an itchy throat. However, doctors say there isn’t enough evidence to prove that honey does alleviate symptoms – and it might also depend on the type of honey and how long it is taken before the pollen season. AS A BEAUTY PRODUCT OR CLEANSER Honey is feted for its nourishing and hydrating properties, and is therefore used in a large number of skincare products, from face and body creams to shampoos. Many people recommend it as a homemade and natural facial cleanser when mixed with coconut oil and even use it to make their own shampoo (it’s also said to be good for dandruff ).

TO PROTECT PETS’ PAWS Just as honey is used to treat human maladies, it can also be used to help protect animals. For example, the Pet Bee paw protector balm (£10.95) from Honey Bee Beautiful, helps treat dry or sore skin on their pads, nose or elbows. IN ALCOHOLIC DRINKS Honey is used in both soft and alcoholic drinks. Perfect for Rosh Hashanah gifting is Batch Apple and Honey Gin, a new and limited edition gin that is certified kosher. It is described as delicate and sweet with initial honey notes that give way to a burst of apple (£35.99. from artisandrinks.co.uk). ( Mead is another alcoholic drink made of fermented honey and water. Tom Gosnell, founder of Gosnells, is a massive fan of honey, and is trying to increase mead’s popularity in the UK with the introduction of his ‘gently sparkling’ 5.5% ABV mead that is made in London using different blossom honeys. L’chaim!

TO TREAT WOUNDS Honey was used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians as a way to treat burns and sores, and some people still swear by medicinalgrade honey thanks to its natural antibiotic and antimicrobial properties, says Gina Smithson, of Traidcraft, who is also a keen beekeeper. “Just smear honey onto the affected area and leave in place for a little while, covered by a clean cloth or tissue to prevent making everything around you sticky. The burning sensation is quickly reduced and healing time is much faster than other home remedies.” But perhaps check with your doctor first.

TO HELP ALLEVIATE A COLD OR COUGH According to the NHS, hot water with lemon and honey is as good a treatment for a cough as are cough medicines. Honey is a humectant (retains moisture) and therefore soothes irritated areas such as sore throats (but don’t give it to babies under one because of the risk of botulism).

Cartoon kid / Rosh Hashanah

The adventures of

a boy called Oy Where do you go to school? I go to Yavneh Primary and I will be going into year two this month. How did you come up with the idea of Oy Boy? During carpet time at school. Me and my friend Noa decided to do a book together. But then I came up with the name Oy Boy and started writing.

It’s never too early to try your hand at becoming an author, as six-year-old Mason Jacobs proved when he created Oy Boy!

You write the books in a Hebrew style from left to right. What made you do that? At first I did not know which way to write the book, but I thought doing it left to right would be more interesting. What will be Oy Boy’s next big adventure? I’ve started writing Oy Boy’s big holiday. I think readers will enjoy it.

Is he based on you, your two brothers or anyone in particular? Oy Boy is not about anybody I know. He comes from my imagination. What do you think Oy Boy likes best about Rosh Hashanah? Oy Boy loves Rosh Hashanah because he gets to meet his friends at shul and he likes listening to the shofar. It’s very hard to blow it. Do you think Oy Boy is smart? Oy Boy is not clever as all he wants to do is watch his favourite things on the TV, but Mr and Mrs Oy keep on saying you must learn and do your homework.

It’s too soon to think about next year’s film and TV productions when you’ve barely caught up with the best of 5778. But the schedule is out and Brigit Grant has checked the credits to spot the Jewish names that will be on screens big and small in 5779

The BBC has adapted John Le Carre’s novel The little Drummer Girl starring Alexander Skarsgård and Florence Pugh who plays an English actress turned Israeli agent who infiltrates a Palestinian network in an attempt to stop an elusive bomber. Fans of Netflix’s The Crown can rejoice at the promise of a new series that has Golders Greenborn actress Helena Bonham Carter playing Princess Margaret alongside Olivia Colman’s Queen Elizabeth II, and then there is nice Jewish A-lister Jake Gyllenhaal, who will play Leonard Bernstein in a biopic called The American. The screenplay by Michael Mitnick, is based on the biography Leonard Bernstein by Humphrey Burton and it documents the composer’s life from the age of 15. Miracle Workers is a heaven-set workplace

comedy based on Simon Rich’s book What in God’s Name. Rich is the Jewish son of infamous New York theatre critic Frank Rich and his seven-episode anthology series stars Daniel Radcliffe as Craig, a low-level angel responsible for handling all of humanity’s prayers, and Steve Buscemi as his boss – God. Israeli writer and director Gideon Raff, who wrote Prisoners of War, which became Homeland, has now come up with The Spy. This tells the astonishing true story of Israel’s most prominent spy, Eli Cohen, who infiltrated the Syrian government in the 1960s. Sacha Baron Cohen is the star fresh out of playing spoof Israelis in his latest comedy series. Adam Driver is not Jewish, but his discovery by Lena Dunham of Girls’ fame has led to others thinking he is. Hence Spike Lee casting him as a Jewish detective in BlacKKKlansman who goes undercover as a white sheet wearer. While we’re on the subject of Lena Dunham, the writer/actress has produced a new series for HBO. Camping, which is based on the British series of the same name, stars Jennifer Garner and David Tennant as a couple trying to make the best of his 45th birthday by going ‘camping’ with family and friends. Another revered TV show creator from the tribe is Mad Men’s Matthew Weiner, who has written and directed every episode of his new Amazon Prime anthology series The Romanoffs. This is a contemporary drama about people who are believed to be the descendants of the Romanoff family that ruled Russia.

British Jewish director Paul Greengrass, whose credits include United 93, The Bourne Supremacy and Captain Phillips, is bringing the story of the aftermath of Norway’s deadliest terrorist attack to Netflix with a short theatrical release too. The film will focus on a survivor of the massacre of 77 young people on the island of Utøya by far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik. Keep an eye out for the Coen Brothers’ first go at TV with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a six-part Western anthology starring, among many others, the handsome Jewish actor James Franco. Finally, the two musts: Maniac, which has the deliciously choochie Jonah Hill alongside La La Land’s Emma Stone as two drug trial volunteers, and Disenchantment, which is the animated work of The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening, set in a medieval world of wizards, fairies and the plague. The drunk Princess Bean is voiced by Comedy Central’s Abbi Jacobson, who is the one to watch for the next 10 years. And somewhere on the horizon, there is Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, a story set during the Second World War about a young boy who longs to be part of the Hitler Youth movement and has an imaginary friend – Adolph Hitler. When he discovers a Jewish girl living in his attic, he tries to find ways to get rid of her but eventually sees her as a human being. With Scarlert Johansson as Jojo’s mother and Sam Rockwell as a Nazi captain, it sounds like our sort of movie. Disenchantment

Rosh Hashanah / Little Books

TODAY A READER, TOMORROW

A LEADER

PJ Library brings the chagim alive for the little ones A megillah, the Haggadah and, of course, the Torah – Jews love a good religious book. If you’re an English Lit grad, you may appreciate the beautiful poetry in Psalms. For the rest of us, it can be challenging to find meaning, especially for younger members of the community. PJ Library, an organisation that gifts books to more than 5,500 children across the UK, celebrates Jewish values and traditions through colourful and creative stories. This September, it is distributing these

titles, which feature high-quality illustrations and informative inside covers to inspire both children and parents alike. “Most kids love finishing the day with a story – whether it’s the chance to step into another world, learn something new, or just have five minutes with a parent, in an otherwise hectic day,” says Lauren Hamburger, director of PJ Library in the UK. “We hope our stories spark Jewish conversations in the home and make bedtime meaningful for everyone, whatever their age!”

The Books

And There Was Evening When God created the world, each day began in the evening – just as days in the Jewish calendar do today. This book’s beautiful, highconcept design gives new life to the words of an ancient story while simultaneously teaching children (and adults!) simple Hebrew words.

Engineer Ari and the Sukkah Express The familiar and much-loved Engineer Ari stops to see all his friends as he drives his train to Jerusalem, and gather his sukkah supplies en route. But when Sukkot arrives, his friends surprise him back at the train station. Is It Rosh Hashanah Yet? Summer has ended, apples are on the trees, and families are getting ready for a big holiday. This book talks about the different symbols and rituals to look out for so children know the Jewish New Year is coming.

How It Works PJ Library works with synagogues and organisations, and suggests these top tips to strengthen Jewish identity in the home: Speak their language! If your child knows more about swiping than synagogue, download Jewish content on their screens. Jewish Interactive, a London-based global charity creates Jewish apps for children. Its Hebrew reading series, Learning the AlefBet, invites children to make their own games and puzzles.

HAPPY ROSH HASHANA TO ALL!

Bring books to life Instead of reading about Judaism, why not bring the stories to life? One PJ parent took her children to a local garden centre on Tu B’Shvat to plant seeds and read a story. Another family used the PJ Library book Ella’s Trip To Israel to inspire their holiday itinerary in Israel.

Shani’s Shoebox When Shani gets new shoes for Rosh Hashanah, she reuses the shoebox for the different festivals throughout the Jewish year. This story is a lovely way to talk to children about the calendar, discussing when each festival falls and how we make them meaningful.

L’dor v’dor Grandparents have great stories about how they celebrated Jewish festivals when they were young, often in different countries. PJ Library stories, such as Tea with Zayde, emphasise the importance of intergenerational connections. Food glorious food! We are part of a religion that has a colourful and meaningful food history. Make the festival dishes and talk about them. Lead by example Make Friday night Shabbat dinner a no-phone time for a family catch-up and, if your child attends a non-Jewish school, read a festival story. If you know a child aged eight or under, sign them up to PJ Library, if you haven’t yet done so, at pjlibrary.org.uk

BEST KOSHER RESTAURANT WINNER: Sami’s, Hendon There’s been a slew of new kosher restaurants opening in recent months, but Sami’s in Hendon remains the firm favourite with its distinct note of 21st century Tel Aviv – modern and lively with gorgeous looking people, exciting menus and great food. BEST FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS WINNER: 34 Mayfair No matter how many times people ask on the group ‘what’s the best place for a special occasion?’ this is always mentioned in the responses. This beautiful, intimate restaurant, with a live pianist, white tablecloths and silver service, manages to be ‘fancy’ without being formal,

BEST FOR SHARING

For tea: Mabel’s Vintage Tea Rooms

BEST FOR KIDS WINNER: Quartieri, Kilburn You can tell yourself that pizza is for kids, but at this buzzy, warm, softly lit restaurant smelling of freshly-baked dough and truffle oil, you will absolutely be going for it yourself. There are classics such as margherita, and ‘different’ ones featuring things like black truffle salsa and pistachio pesto (not together, but you could probably ask!). There are pasta dishes, risottos, and a couple of salads, plus zucchini fries, bruschetta, arancini

For sharing: Fayre Share

WINNER: Fayre Share, Hackney The sharing plates concept seems here to stay, but the truth of the matter is that no one actually likes sharing their food. At Fayre Share, every dish is available for one, two or four people, meaning that a table could all share the same dish, as they would at home. There’s an emphasis on British pies and other British favourites such as Arctic roll with jelly. G&Ts are served in teapots for sharing. RUNNER UP: La Lluna, Muswell Hill

MOST ANTICIPATED NEW OPENING WINNER: Hudsons, Borehamwood After resounding success in Whetstone and Mill Hill, this popular American-style brasserie will

be bringing its exciting dishes (and the best onion loaf in town) to the former Delisserie unit in Borehamwood later this year. RUNNER UP: Corbin & King’s new venture, St John’s Wood

THE BEST OF THE REST(AURANTS) The Restaurant Club Facebook group has more than 22,000 members with strong, informed opinions on restaurants all over the world, but mainly in London. If you want to know about new openings, local gems, where to go for a special occasion, a good place to take your mother-in-law, your kids, or even your dog, this is the group to join. Simcha Settings / Rosh Hashanah

New Year, New Venue Pick a fresh place to party in 5779 With a new year comes new plans, notably exciting ones for weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs. The competition to keep up with the Bernsteins has never been more fierce, but isn’t it more fun to break from the pack, do something different and choose an original venue? South Farm is that venue because it is distinctly different and based in Royston on the Cambridgeshire borders, which

is only 30 plus miles from north London, thus a lot closer than Marbs or Florence. Allowing guests to come to a wedding without incurring the cost of a plane ticket is a gift in itself, and so is partying at South Farm. The farmhouse itself is picture box pretty and ceremonies can be held indoors in the Old Dairy, Tudor Barn

or Drawing Room, as well as outside in the Summerhouse. With formal seating for 146 and party capacity for 200, along with accommodation for 24 and unlimited camping or ‘glamping’ inside spectacular Romany caravans, this is the perfect place for all sorts of big events and special birthdays. And in perfect time for Rosh Hashanah, there are apples on the trees at South Farm, but the small holding and herb gardens are always a source for the freshest seasonal produce and perfect for a wedding or barmitzvah feast in the age of nutritional enlightenment. For the record, they can accommodate kosher guests, which is another reason to try somewhere new in the new year. ď ľ South-farm.co.uk Tel: 01223 207581

NORWOOD CALENDAR A lot can happen for a charity in 365 days. This is what happened to Norwood MAY Norwood’s residential accommodation service at 30 Old Church Lane was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It is home to eight adults with learning disabilities, and first achieved the accolade in January 2016 and has maintained its exceptionally high level since, meaning it stays in the top two percent of services (or top 100 homes out of 4,500) in the country. SEPTEMBER More than 200 guests enjoyed a night of celebration at Norwood’s fifth annual Volunteer Recognition Awards at Allianz Park in Hendon. An impressive nine awards were given to the deserving winners.

ability skills, learn the expectations that are important in the workplace, and widen their skills base through providing work placement opportunities. FEBRUARY Norwood opens Sara’s Kitchen, a working café and training kitchen at its Kennedy Leigh Family Centre in Hendon.

OCTOBER Over 200 cyclists and trekkers, accompanied by 11 inspirational people Norwood support, completed an ‘unforgettable’ week in Israel to celebrate 25 years of Norwood Challenges. They took part in a spectacular series of three cycles and one trek, converging on the coastal resort of Eilat in southern Israel for a weekend of celebrations. NOVEMBER At Norwood’s Annual Dinner, the most prestigious fundraising event in the charity’s calendar, generous supporters raised £3.2 million. Former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner FW de Klerk spoke in front of more than 1,300 guests to CNBC journalist and broadcaster Tania Bryer about his hopes for the youth of South Africa and beyond. DECEMBER Norwood’s Golders Green and Stanmore charity shops held late-night designer shopping events, helping to raise more than £4,000 in just six hours, selling items that were generously donated by guests at Norwood’s Annual Dinner. JANUARY Norwood launched a new project, funded by a successful bid to the Big Lottery Awards for All, to help young people with learning disabilities to identify and recognise their employ-

MARCH Nicola Mendelsohn led a panel of executives from four of the world’s most recognisable brands – Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Google – in a discussion on the role technology platforms play in shaping media and society at Norwood’s Business Breakfast event, held on 6 March – raising more than £100,000 for Norwood’s services. APRIL A team of 20 runners competed in the London Marathon on Sunday, 22 April, in aid of Norwood. Leading the way was Lawrence Glass, a great supporter of Norwood, who describes the charity as “extremely close to my heart”.

JUNE Norwood’s head music therapist, Lisa Margetts PhD GRNCM, uses research from PhD to inform and enhance her work with people supported by music therapy at Norwood.

JULY Norwood’s Kennedy Leigh Family Centre hosted the 10th anniversary launch of Mitzvah Day.

AUGUST Following an inspection in May, the CQC found the quality of care provided by Norwood’s Tager Centre care home in Crowthorne, Berkshire, to be ‘Outstanding’, citing in the report that Tager “was extraordinarily person-centred and people were seen and responded to as individuals”. Wishing everyone who made 365 days count at Norwood shana tova!

Charity / Rosh Hashanah

PAWS for thought What a year it’s been for the Israel Guide Dog Centre. With the opening in April of the new Puppy Development and Training Campus, about 250 of the charity’s closest friends and supporters turned up to celebrate the momentous occasion, which marks the beginning of a new era for the centre as it takes operations to the next level and prepares to help even more people. The new campus will help to increase the number of dogs produced as it features the EGL Puppy Development building with six state-of-the-art whelping rooms, which is where the mothers give birth. Additionally, new indoor areas form part of the puppy kindergarten, where they are exposed to various stimuli with lights, sounds and textures – all mixed in with a generous amount of love and encouragement from the dedicated staff. A new kennel building has also been added and doubled the capacity to house dogs in training. The new kennels are specially designed to provide the dogs with a comfortable, clean

and safe environment, and adjacent to the new buildings are wonderful outdoor training yards, a new obstacle course, maze, and other permanent training obstacles. “Those who have visited will see the difference, and for those who have yet to visit the centre, there has never been a better time,” says Martin Segal, UK executive director of the charity’s UK fundraising. “We are grateful to everyone who helped make this dream a reality and I’d like to ‘congratulate’ all our wonderful ‘breeding mothers’ who produced 107 puppies for us in 2017. I am also very proud to say that as of June, we have placed 622 trained guide dogs with blind and visually-impaired clients.” Another new launch in 2018 was the service companion programme (SCP) led by Israeli-born Yariv Melamed, who learnt to be a guide dog mobility instructor with Guide Dogs Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. The SCP was initiated as a result of the centre deciding that dogs that were not accepted into the guide dog training programme were still amazing animals with the potential to help people with other ‘needs’. “So we ‘allowed’ these dogs to ‘change careers’.Like humans do sometimes,” says Martin. “And that is how the SCP came to help people with ‘special needs’. “The group that stands out as most in need of this programme is that of children with autism, but we also wanted to take into consideration the evergrowing number of IDF veterans

suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We will also look to place SCP-trained dogs with children who are blind and other people with special needs.” The role of an SCP-trained dog working with a person with PTSD is to detect when that person is feeling stressed or anxious, to interrupt that process and distract them and offer comfort by hugging them (jumping with two or four paws) and licking their face. An example of this would be if the person was having a nightmare – the dog is trained to wake them and offer them comfort. “There is so much more to achieve,” says Martin who, on behalf of the Israel Guide Dog Centre, wishes everyone who helps the charity shana tova.  For more information, or to donate, call 020 8090 3455 or email martin@bfigdcb.org

Travel / Rosh Hashanah

MAJESTIC SAILING Keith Sanford believes there’s only one way to take a holiday and it isn’t on dry land...

A

rriving dockside in Southampton, we were in awe of the sheer size and majesty of Cunard’s newest vessel, Queen Elizabeth. Launched in 2010 and weighing in at 91,000 tonnes, the ship can carry 2,000 guests and almost 1,000 crew, which makes you wonder how it stays afloat! But this is an impressive piece of transportation and those who are cruise newbies need to know what lies in store. The pierside check-in was swift and efficient, and the warm welcome we received was enhanced by a glass of cold champagne. Then we saw our room, or should I say our stateroom, which was home for the next four nights. Full marks go to its architects, as it has ample storage with many drawers and wardrobes, along with a large flat-screen TV, minibar and an ensuite bathroom (shower, no bath), plus our own balcony. Confident that our luggage would be delivered directly to our stateroom, we took the opportunity to explore the ship. Set over 12 decks, with an ornate grand staircase leading from the central lobby area, there are a number of restaurants, the Queens

Check into the finest stateroom

Room, a large and impressive ballroom where the white glove silver service afternoon tea is served, the Royal Court Theatre for entertainment, the Commodore Club, The Golden Lion Pub, Grills Lounge for live music, an ample selection of retail therapy outlets, a casino for those who fancy their chances, a full-facility spa, a comprehensively equipped gym, three swimming pools (one indoor) and various outdoor facilities, including a running track, bars and multi-level sun decks. Suffice it to say this is one busy ship! Having departed Southampton, and with the emergency procedures drill complete, we returned to our stateroom to relax before dinner, a show and a walk on the poop deck

One of Queen Elizabeth’s expansive pools

under a starlit sky. Every evening passengers receive a copy of a newsletter, informing them of the times and details of numerous activities for the following day. There would be shore excursions (if we’re in a port), group card, or deck games, guest lectures, cookery demonstrations, Q&A sessions hosted by crew members and all of this would revolve around breakfast, lunch and dinner (food is a major part of a cruise, trust me). The service on board was at another level and, along with ensuring passenger safety, the crew assisted constantly in order to make their stay as rewarding as possible. Breakfast and lunch is buffet style in the Lido restaurant, offering a vast array of both hot and cold foods catering to all tastes, with a silver-service dinner in the two-tier Britannia restaurant in the evening. Speciality dining is also available (for a surcharge), which is something we treated ourselves to one evening, enjoying first hand the reputation of Cunard’s six-star Verandah restaurant. The presentation was immaculate, the quality of the food stunning and the service nothing short of outstanding. Mention must also be made of the excellent evening entertainment in the 900-seat theatre twice nightly. Led by a cast of singers and dancers in a production that would not look out of place in London’s West End, it was all the more remarkable we were at sea. For those who haven’t cruised before, we strongly suggest booking a short voyage as a taster. Only then will you appreciate what it’s like to stay in 5* luxury and watch different destinations come to you. Call 0843 374 2224. or visit cunard.co.uk

HOME AGAIN IN PORTUGAL Brie Bailey discovers the only Jewish B&B in Lisbon

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF JEWS lived in Portugal before 1536 – then suddenly they didn’t. When the church and royal house decided to join the Spanish campaign of expulsion, executions and forced conversions, the Inquisition put paid to Jewish plans for the future. But that was then, and in recent years, Portugal and Spain have done their best to atone for the bad decisions by allowing some 5,000 descendants of Sephardic families to obtain passports. With this positive move has come others, including a push for kosher food in Portugal, which is arriving gradually. The Braz Queijos cheese factory in Covilha was among the first to obtain a kosher certificate, and in 2010, the town of Belmonte began hosting an annual kosher market ahead of Rosh Hashanah. This year, the market will be held in October and it

is there that the Cabralinha Brewery will debut its first kosher beer, which is made from Israeli honey. Cabralinha which means ‘little goat’ is also located in Belmonte, one of three municipalities with rabbis and synagogues. With this new-found interest – and reclaiming of its Jewish roots, a stay with Patricia and Joseph Lustigman in Lisbon is essential. They run the only kosher B&B in town, and visitors never fail to be charmed by their hospitality and expertly-devised Jewish tour of the city. The French couple have lived in Lisbon for 30 years and, as dedicated members of the Jewish community, wanted to welcome those who keep kosher and combine it with a colourful historical experience. “We are as passionate about Lisbon as we are about our faith,” says Patricia, who describes their tour as one of a kind. “With us, you will

pursue a road less travelled by tourists and learn facts and unfamiliar stories about the Portuguese Jewish community.” Guests at the couple’s B&B, which is minutes from the synagogue, get to enjoy a Friday night dinner and Shabbat lunch, as well as gourmet takeaway kosher meals on request. The Lustigman tour, which happens at strolling pace, is a delicious balance of history and anecdotes that begins in the 12th century. From the expulsion of Jews from Portugal by the Visigoths, through to the days of the Inquisition and beyond. “You will gain incredible insight into the role the remarkable courageous and humble Jewish community of Lisbon played

during the Second World War and rediscover the daily life of Jewish refugees in the city,” adds Patricia, who always takes visitors to the magnificent synagogue of Lisbon and to other parts of the city Jews called home. Israel / Rosh Hashanah

The seven-bedroom Elysee villa is pefect if you want a holiday with all your family

Vacation

ROYALTY

These are the places to stay if you want to feel like a prince in Israel

I

n the land of King David, it is fitting to want to vacation like royalty, and that’s possible if you stay at one of the dream villas created by Hayokra. Properties this magnificent don’t come cheap, but their size allows for groups of family and friends to enjoy the residences together while spreading the cost. Take the Aqua Boutique Villa. Situated between a lake and the sky in the Kinneret landscape, it overlooks the Galilee, Golan and Hermon, and has been designed to offer a holiday experience beyond imagination. Spacious enough to accommodate five families, each of them will have their own suite and private bathroom as well as a spacious central space (living room, kitchen, dining room and garden) along with an additional guest house on the lower floor. The villa’s kitchen is so well equipped it is worthy of the talents of Nigella or Gordon, but it’s worth noting there are two ovens (milk and meat), a huge refrigerator that is useful if you choose to use the 20-seat dining room. There is also an option to book a private chef or organise a cooking workshop, although you may prefer one dedicated to chocolate, wine or laughter. With so much to keep you at the villa – BBQ, Jacuzzi, outdoor pools with benches in the

water – getting out and about takes willpower, but it is worth the effort. The Sea of Galilee is a 30-minute drive, and closer still is the Hula Valley lake and nature reserve (touristisrael. com/hula-valley) which is home to thousands of migratory birds. Hermon also has many public parks, restaurants and cafés and you can do a Jeep safari or horse ride before heading back to the palatial villa for an evening in the starlit garden. With additional facilities such as baby cots, showers and children’s beds and an active synagogue within walking distance, it won’t be hard to persuade your family to join you. Should you need more space, Hayokra also has the Don Refaelo Estate in the western Galilee area of the new Moshav Peki’in, which is 20 minutes from the city of Nahariya. The attractions around the estate include Monfort Lake in Ma’alot, horseriding and nature trails. Each suite on the

estate spreads over 70 metres and is surrounded by gardens, thriving lawns and a huge swimming pool. This villa has eight luxurious bedrooms, but if it’s a real castle you want, opt for the sevenbedroom Elysee and four-bedroom Versace villas in the centre of the settlement of Sadot Micha. Also available for bar/batmitzvah and events, it is built in the shape of a castle. Pools, marble and pizzazz of the kind one only sees in presidential suites, this is a royal location befitting King David’s ancestors. • hayokra.co.il or call 00972 073-2158329

Welsh hidden gem

Zuzana Kasparova visited the green hotel in the valleys that Johnny Depp loves

After settling in, we enjoyed While my friend and I weren’t at a luxurious afternoon tea in Llangoed Hall to discuss politics, the hotel’s morning room. The the likely former home of the first mouth-watering selection of Welsh Parliament is where we home-made fruitcake, scones, spent an unforgettable weekend sandwiches and fresh cream being pampered – but, thankfully, pastries were served on goldnot at the taxpayers’ expense. leaf china and, after we filled The historic country house our bellies, we went to explore is located in the Wye Valley, the hotel and its surroundings mid Wales, north of the Brecon Chef Nick Brodie’s magic – all 20 acres and a garden that Beacons, and is one of the finest in provides 45 percent of the vegetables, fruit and Britain. Formerly owned by Sir Bernard Ashley herbs that the chefs use for the award-winning and his fashion designer wife, the late Laura restaurant in winter. However, it is during the Ashley was responsible for the elegant décor. summer that the gardens truly come alive with The understated charm of the house is juxtablooms and in autumn the different hues must posed with a collection of paintings that would be a truly wonderful sight. The hotel enjoys be the envy of many a gallery and I particularly liked the photographs of the Ashley family, which are proudly displayed around the hotel, lending it a cosy touch. We were ushered into our very spacious master bedroom, with four-poster bed, and told it had recently been occupied by Johnny Depp. This thrilled us as much as the magical views of the Wye Valley and Black Mountains. Llangoed Hall is not very far from the market town of Hay-on-Wye, which is famous for its annual book festivals, so look out for famous authors. Johnny Depp slept here – as did I

some 95 percent sustainability with its own smoke house and bee hive that produces its own delicious honey you can buy to take home (which I did, a perfect Rosh Hashanah gift). The elegant country house, originally known as Lllangoed Castle, has a rich history dating back to 560 CE when it was believed to have been the legendary White Palace, home of the first Welsh parliament. It only became a hotel in 1990 and is a perfect venue for weddings, bar and batmitzvahs. The next morning we woke to a chorus of birds and a delicious and hearty breakfast before picking up some leaflets about suggested walks in the direction of the River Wye. This part of Wales deserves so much more publicity. A stroll by the crystal-clear river that was full of fish and a climb up the hill for breath-taking views of the Brecon Beacons is so rejuvenating. After spending the whole day outdoors, we had built up quite an appetite and turned up at the hotel’s restaurant, which was

rated highly in the Waitrose Good Food Guide Top 50 Restaurants last year. Head chef Nick Brodie astonished even us vegetarians with his extraordinary inventive taster menu of mouthwatering dishes. What I loved about this luxury hotel was its sustainable policy. Not content with growing its own produce for use in the kitchens, they have implemented innovative measures to reduce their energy and water usage as well as food miles. The hotel employs local people and reinvests in green practices all of the time, making Llangoed Hall one of the UK’s greenest weekend retreats. Llangoed Hall is an enviromental treasure and I’m sure Johnny Depp would agree. ZUZANA’S TRAVEL TIPS A night at Llangoed Hall is priced from £150 B&B based on two sharing. llangoedhall.co.uk or call 01874 754525.

Daring Dorking / Rosh Hashanah

The hills are

ALIVE…

Keen to fill her lungs with fresh air, Alex Galbinski checked into a historic coaching inn in Dorking

T

he Charles Dickens tomes left on the bedside table were a lovely touch, but there was too much to see and do to read in the room. My friend and I had taken the train to Dorking – less than one hour from Waterloo – to recharge our batteries while exploring the area’s renowned countryside. Our home for the night was The White Horse on Dorking High Street, a lovely former hitching post for those who, like us – and Dickens, Daniel Defoe and Benjamin Disraeli – made their way south from London. Part of Bespoke Hotels, the UK’s largest independent hotel group, the 18th century coaching inn – which was once a manor and listed in the Domesday Book as belonging to William the Conqueror – underwent a £4 million refurb last year to restore it to its former Dickensian glory. Sympathetically made over, the result is that the 56-room hotel has a cosy feel, with brightlycoloured velvet armchairs and dark leather sofas in the lounge areas and saddle-shaped bar

stools. We also appreciated the on-trend grey walls, wooden features and quirky details such as the old-fashioned phone (there is also Wi-Fi). We wanted to make the most of the day, so had a quick lunch at the Courtyard Café Bar in Old Kings Head Court, where there is a gallery and gift shop, before taking the bus (Oyster cards work here) to a footpath leading to the National Trust’s Box Hill, which is part of the North Downs. Box Hill Fort was built in the late 1800s as part of the London Defence Scheme, literally a last-ditch attempt to save London, which would then, it was believed, be followed

by the rest of the empire. There is also a twomile natural play trail full of trees and structures suitable for toddlers to climb, and walks of various difficulty. We were rewarded by stunning views of the Surrey Hills and stopped off at the café for a reviving tea. While we were obviously on foot, the area is also perfect for cyclists (the Box Hill Route is 16km). Dinner was in the 100-seater destination restaurant, The Dozen – so called because baked goods are sold in the hotel deli. I enjoyed the delicate and fresh grilled lemon sole and my friend’s sirloin steak – served rare – was just right. Had we not wanted to wake up bright eyed, we would have enjoyed Dickensian and countryside-themed cocktails, but the warm chocolate brownie and Eton mess did the trick. The next morning we explored the nearby streets, noting that, alongside the ubiquitous retailers, there are many specialist stores,

such as those selling hunting and fishing ware, antiques and interiors and cycles. There are many other areas and attractions nearby worthy of a visit, for example the Deepdene Trail – around a 15-minute walk from the town centre – and the Denbies Estate and Vineyards. Unlike Dickens, who spent months at the inn composing The Pickwick Papers, ours was a brief stay – but a charming one. Travel tips: Alex was a guest of The White Horse, where a standard double room starts from £50 per night. For details, visit whitehorsedorking.com
