A wedding is a perfect storm for hair worries. Since childhood, many women have been bombarded with the message that their wedding is the most important day of their lives, and once they begin planning their ceremony and reception, the force of that message is magnified exponentially. Certainly their wedding may be the most photographed day of their lives, beginning with their getting dressed and then continuing until the last guest leaves. No wonder that a bride’s expectations that her hair style be perfect are so monumental. To meet those expectations, wedding hair professionals recommend a trial run: a hair styling about four weeks before the wedding. Caroline Kesselring, the wedding hairstyle go-to stylist at Studio 1612 in Mt. Washington, has been working with brides for the past eight years. With a laugh, she said, “Every haircut with every type of client can almost turn into a therapy session — the wedding hairstyling even more so.

“I always tell the brides I work with that they should not want to have a completely different look; they should look like the best version of themselves, not like somebody else. “At the trial run I take photos of the finished look from many angles and take notes about any modifications I should make on the wedding day.� Most brides come to the trial run knowing exactly what they want, but sometimes that is not the most flattering choice. That was the experience of Carla Kallman Cooper, when she went to her first trial run with Jamie Halcott of Baltimore Bridal Hair. Recalls Carla, “I ended up with two trial runs. After looking at so many pictures of hair styles, I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted, and Jamie styled my hair that way in the first trial run. But my family members and I were not so happy with it. “So I went back for another trial run and told Jamie just to do what she thought best, and it was perfect.� Jamie styled Carla’s long hair (to

hair pulled up or back, and with flowing curls and waves,� noted Ms. Kesselring. Ms. Halcott agreed, noting, “I am finding that more and more brides are wanting an all-over curly style, with waves and curls from the roots. “I am also seeing a greater use of accessories in the hair. Not only the traditional veils and tiaras, but also fresh flowers, jeweled pieces and even feathers, which I recently used in a hair style.� Both Ms. Kesselring and Ms. Halcott will do the day-of-wedding hair styling either in the bride’s home or at the wedding site. If requested, they will even stay through the wedding to do one-the-spot touch-ups.
