od has given Jewish Voice a mandate to proclaim Messiah wherever there are Jewish People, bringing them the message of God’s love, hope, and salvation. Together, you and I have trekked through some of the most rugged terrain in the most remote regions of the world to reach His Precious Remnant with a practical demonstration of God’s love in Yeshua, ministering health and humanitarian care to the most impoverished Jews. We have seen unprecedented numbers of Jewish People come to faith in this generation through glorious International Festivals of Jewish Music & Dance announcing the Good News from the former Soviet Union to India to South America. But what about our neighbors right here in the United States? Historically, the American Jewish community has been largely hardened to the Gospel message. However, I can speak like Paul, and say, “I ask then: Did God reject His people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham...” (Romans 11:1) and indeed there are tens of thousands of Jewish Believers in the U.S., and around 300 Messianic congregations, which is extremely significant in that all came to be within the last fifty years. Yes, God is doing something among the Jews—even in the United States!

Jewish Voice has exciting projects underway that you will be able to be involved with in the near future to reach the Jewish community here in the United States. And we have dedicated this issue to exploring this timely topic to encourage and equip you to answer the call, however God may open the door for you, to take the Good News “to the Jew first.” This is the cry of Paul’s heart to the Believers in Rome. More importantly, it is the cry of God’s own heart. “As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’” (Romans 10:15)

Generally speaking, American Jews are not as open to the Gospel as poor Jewish communities in Ethiopia or India. The Western Jew may be put off by Christian terminology, which harkens back to a two thousand year legacy of persecution in the Name of Christ and Christianity. The Western Jew may not see their need for a savior or have an entirely different expectation of Messiah, if any at all. Yet, the biblical call remains the same: “to the Jew first” (Romans 1:16). And so God will make a way—and has made a way with great numbers who come to embrace Yeshua as their Messiah! But, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Romans 10:14) We must be willing to answer the call and take the Good News not only to the Jews scattered around the world, but to those here in America as well.

omething unusual is going on in the American Jewish community. They are “outraged ... frenzied ... invoking the name of Hitler in the same sentence with one of their own...” What’s it all about? It seems Rabbi Shmuley Boteach— one of America’s most popular Orthodox rabbis, has discovered that Jesus is thoroughly Jewish, and so has published a book entitled Kosher Jesus, attempting to correct the two thousand year misconception that He started a new anti-Jewish religion. He’s asking Jews to reclaim their long lost brother for Judaism! To say Boteach has stirred up a hornet’s nest is a gross understatement.

His wholly Hebraic context, hopefully leading to productive dialogue and ultimately revelation.

Dear Brother Jonathan, Greetings and shalom to you in the name of Yeshua. I am originally from India and am currently a pastor of an Indian church in Atlanta, GA. Why American Jews Tend to Be LIBERAL

“The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.” —Proverbs 29:7

T

he predilection of American Jews to embrace liberalism both vexes and perplexes. We want our modern Chosen People to exemplify the “kingdom of priests and holy nation.”¹ God called them to do just that, yet we often find the majority of American Jews on the frontline of liberal social issues that compromise biblical morality. Why? Let’s take a look.

Judeo-Christian ethics have deeply impacted the Western world as well, the essence of which is based on the Torah. Into a barbaric world the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob introduced elemental concepts of civilization: “love your neighbor,”² “care for the poor,”³ and “establish justice.”4 Not all American Jews are liberal. Approximately ten percent of the American Jewish community is Orthodox—meaning they believe the Torah (Genesis through Deuteronomy) to be the Word of God. Many have a vibrant faith and believe prayer touches the heart of God. Generally speaking, the Orthodox and a small percentage of Conservative Jews hold to conservative values and biblical morality.

On the other hand, most American Jews are aligned with Reform or Conservative Judaism, while holding liberal views. While traditionally not Torah observant, many of the values and ethics that quicken the liberal heart surprisingly spring from a biblical heritage of social consciousness. The Hebraic heritage subconsciously inspires most Jewish People to “do good.” And, indeed, the Jewish People have blessed the world in multitudinous ways. Far disproportionate for their small numbers, the Jewish People have been world leaders in major scientific and medical research and development breakthroughs, have founded medical relief societies, world class hospitals, human rights organizations, and are often among the first on site offering aid when a natural disaster hits a third world country. You’re Not Alone

The entwined history of Jews and Christians has, as a part of its chronicle, remarkable high points and destructive low points in its 2000 years. In fact, the low points in this uneasy relationship far outweigh the best of times for the Jews, as they have lived among the greater Christian populations in Europe and America. This raises a profoundly important question: Why would Christianity, based on the teaching of love and forgiveness, inculcate the values of hatred and discrimination toward the Jewish People, as evidenced by perpetual anti-Semitism? The answer may well lie in the history of “the Church.”

The Trifecta

I

n 325 A.D. a body of Christian bishops convened in Nicaea in Bithynia (present-day Turkey) by the Roman Emperor Constantine. This ecumenical council was the first effort to attain consensus in Christendom on key theological doctrines, namely the settlement of the Christological issue of the relationship of Jesus to God the Father, among other theological issues of the day.

In the years that followed, the Catholic Church, with the Bishop of Rome as the “head of the Church,” emerged as the dominant religion of Christianity. For the first time in three centuries, after the death and resurrection of the Messiah, spiritual power had been consolidated and the Christian message of good news, organically transmitted from one Believer to the next, was transformed into an institution of religion. Central to the emerging religion was this question: Who represented

God’s elect or His Chosen People? Historically and biblically, the Jews had carried this title. However, this was now the Gentile age, as the Catholic Church defined it, and if a new religion was to be birthed, a new “elect” must be chosen. So, the Catholic Church leaders turned their attention to the critical issue of bloodline. Who could legally lay claim to the title? If it were to be the Gentiles, then the Jewish line would have to be cut off. Therefore, they legally sought to adjudicate the question: Who killed the Messiah?


In the end, the Catholic Church deemed the Jews “Christ killers.” From this point forward, this decree became the license for every European king, tyrant, mayor, and “village idiot” to inflict retribution on the Jewish People. Wave upon wave of anti-Semitism swept over Europe, all in the name of "Christ," with the explicit use of the Cross as its signature symbol. Thus, the first step in the trifecta was completed: The Jews killed Jesus, singularly, and were, therefore, disinherited. The second step was to move the spiritual capital from Jerusalem to Rome. Then, the final step was in the form of papal art depicting Yeshua as a European Anglo. It would be a great deal easier to arouse the European masses to commit to wholesale antiSemitism if Jesus did not have the physical characteristics of a Middle Eastern Jew. The objective was quite simple when power was usurped through a coup. In the case of a political or military coup, and in the deposing of a king, you must kill off all heirs to the throne. As a result, the “elder Jewish” brother of Christianity must be removed, at all costs. For the next 17 centuries, the theological essence of the “Jew as Christ Killer” was not only codified into law,

but also the lexicon of every European language. As the Catholic Church merged its power with the secular kings of Europe, the various forms of antiSemitism were quite lethal. The result was a great divide between Christian and Jew, which remains until this day. And, more particularly, the Jew will view all of Christianity through this historical prism.

The ‘New’ Promised Land During the great scourge of the Jewish People in England, many Jews were forced to leave the island they called home. Other Jews, to protect their families and modest

wealth, took Christian names and “converted to Christianity.” Norman Podhoretz, the Jewish scholar of the 20th and 21st centuries, researched in his book Why Are Jews Liberal? a profoundly interesting piece of history, related to the English Reformation, as practiced by the Puritans. During this wholly unique period in the English Reformation history, the Puritans had welcomed the Jews as brothers, even to the point that they “regarded the ‘old’ dispensation as binding and even reverted to its practices,” according to Cecil Roth. Podhoretz defined the characteristics of the Puritans who came to America this way: “it is true beyond question that, in sharp contrast to the [Catholic] Christians of Europe, who downplayed the Old Testament and concentrated mainly on the New, the Puritans tended to be more attracted to— and even fixated on—the Old rather than the New.” To prove the extent to which these Pu.ritans were committed to a fully integrated Bible and structure for society, they enacted half of the statues in the Code of 1655 from the Old Testament, while only three percent were from the New Testament—according to historians Max Baker and Paul Masserman. Today, if you travel to the New England states, you will find many towns named directly from the Old Testament. This

Promise Kept: Irrefutable Proof of

W

hen it comes to proving the existence of God and the truthfulness of His Word, it’s easy to come up short. As Believers in Yeshua, we often present subjective or debatable evidence, such as personal experience, miracles, and fulfillment of Bible prophecy. But demonstrations of power and foreknowledge aren’t necessarily measures of truthfulness. Rather, we trust what someone says when we believe he is true to his word, when we believe he will keep all his promises.

God

So why should we trust that God’s Word is true, that He exists, and that He is who He says He is? Because He has faithfully kept one objective, verifiable, and undebatable promise: He has continued to preserve the Remnant of Israel from antiquity; He endures as the eternal Guardian of the Jewish People. As we fix our eyes on Yeshua—the ultimate fulfillment of all God’s promises—we often fail to see the whole plan of salvation. While the Master Yeshua is clearly the central and

climactic figure of this story, the Jewish People are primary characters, without whom the entire plot unravels. God’s plan for reconciling all people-groups to Himself hinges on His promise to the People of Israel. From beginning to end, this promise is thoroughly embedded in the Scriptures. Despite Israel’s inevitable, repeated disobedience, the LORD nevertheless vows, “I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely, breaking my


covenant with them” (Leviticus 26:44). Mosheh (Moses) characterizes God as being “faithful” to His covenant (see Deuteronomy 7:9), declaring to Israel that “he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:8). Specifically of the tribe of Judah, 2 Kings 8:19 proclaims, “Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the LORD was not willing to destroy Judah. ISRAEL:

A Real Course in

Miracles

T

he modern state of Israel stands as a living monument to the unbreakable Word of God; vibrant and living evidence of God's existence and His continued involvement in the affairs of mankind. The nation of Israel serves as a mile marker on the road to the conclusion of human history. The manner of its restoration is both overtly miraculous and historically fortuitous. By every conventional historical standard, it should not exist. It's continued existence has been under threat every day since it first declared independence.

But in order for Bible prophecy concerning the Last Days to have any contemporary context, it must exist. Without the existence of a literal, politically viable Jewish State known as “Israel,” none of the prophecies concerning the Last Days and the coming judgment of the nations find any historical context. Whatever is happening on the global stage would then serve no particular prophetic outline and we could draw no particular confidence from seeing it unfold. Allow yourself to dwell, for a moment, on what a monumentally important fact that actually is. Remove the existence of a modern, Jewish state called “Israel” from contemporary history and no other event could have any prophetic relevance. The Arab Spring, the developing conflict with Iran, the collapse of Turkish-Israeli relations, the Russian naval presence off the coast of Syria; these events would be far more terrifying devoid of any prophetic context. But since there is such an entity as Israel, a nation ‘born in a day’ as a Jewish State, against all the odds, we can know that the events that are unfolding in our lifetimes are following a particular script. A script so clearly outlined that we can actually follow along with it as it unfolds. Beginning with the miraculous restoration of the Jewish People to the exact piece of real estate predicted by Scripture, tens of centuries beforehand! Twenty-five hundred years ago, the Prophet Isaiah asked four specific questions: “Who has ever heard of such things? Who has ever seen things like this? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment?” (Isaiah 66:8a) These are straightforward questions, and, if they are to be relevant to our understanding, then we should be able to come up with straightforward answers.

Of all those generations across the ages, only you and I can say that we have seen such things as a nation born at once; “yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children” (Isaiah 66:8b). We witnessed within our lifetime “a country born in a day”— that day being December 25, 2001 on the occasion of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Note the precise nature of Isaiah's prophecy of Israel's miraculous restoration. “Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 43:5-6). Now let's compare Isaiah's vision to the history of modern Israel: • “Brought” from the East: The first wave of Jewish immigration came with the rise of Arab nationalism in the 1920s when entire Jewish communities fled Islamic persecution. • “Gathered” from the West: It was closely followed in the 1930s by Jews fleeing European anti-Semitism and in the 1940s by the influx of survivors of the European Holocaust. • “Given up” by the North: Wholesale Jewish emigration from the extreme north of Israel was restricted by the Soviets until the fall of the USSR in the 1990s. The Russians then gave up their Jews and opened Jewish emigration quotas to the Holy Land. • To the South, “Brought from Afar”: In the early 1990s, growing persecution of Jews, particularly the Ethiopian ‘Lost Tribe,’ resulted in Operation Joshua, a secret airlift of Ethiopian Jews from the Sudan, despite opposition from the rest of the Arab world.

On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. he Passover Exodus is the watershed event in Jewish history. Indeed, it is a momentous event for all mankind. However, many Believers may not fully comprehend the relevance of Passover within the context of the majestic atoning work of God. In grasping the profound truths embodied in the familiar Passover story, one can more deeply and fully appreciate the redemption in Messiah Yeshua—Jesus, the Lamb of God. The first Believers observed Passover. The Apostle Paul took the Feast to a deeper level, exhorting believers to grasp its symbolism. As we eat the unleavened bread, we must recognize that leaven, or yeast, symbolizes sin. Sin has a cost—it was because of our sin that Messiah was sacrificed. You are a new creation in Messiah! Therefore, rid yourselves of sin, “for Messiah [Christ], our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7).

The word Passover in Hebrew is Pesach, which means “to pass over.” On that last night in Egypt, death passed over the homes covered by the blood of the lamb. The Aramaic word for lamb is talya, which can mean either “lamb” or “servant.” Isaiah 53 is one of the most succinct prophetic descriptions of Yeshua, depicting Messiah as a Lamb led to the slaughter. In the New Testament, Yeshua is referred to as “the Lamb” approximately 34 times. Let’s look at some of the extraordinary parallels between Yeshua and the Passover Lamb.

An Unblemished Lamb

“The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect . . .” (Exodus 12:5). The Passover lamb was to be in the prime of life and without blemish. Blemish also symbolizes sin. Yeshua, our final and perfect atonement, lived a sinless life.

We have been redeemed out of sin— not with corruptible things such as silver and gold, “but with the precious blood of Messiah, a lamb without blemish or defect” (1 Peter 1:19). We have been bought with a price, and the spotless Lamb of God made our redemption sure. According to 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Hallelujah!

A Lamb for Each Household

“. . . each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household” (Exodus 12:3). The Word of God is explicit in the Prophets and in the New Covenant that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Just as each household required a lamb, every individual needs atonement, a sacrifice for his or her sin.

“ . . . when I see the blood, I will pass over you” (Exodus 12:13).

I never learned these things growing up celebrating Passover. Although I was taught about the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, I never understood that God is alive, and I am a sinner in need of atonement. I never grasped deliverance in a meaningful way. The Church often lacks that appreciation. If we don’t appreciate the Old Covenant Scriptures, then we have missed the deep understanding of God’s character as Deliverer and Provider. This is the heart of what the Passover teaches us, taking us through the story of the deliverance of the Hebrew children by the hand and grace of God— deliverance not only out of Egypt, but also from sin and death—by the blood of the Passover Lamb. Without the shedding of blood, there is no atonement (Leviticus 17:11). God recognized that no man could keep His Law perfectly. But at the center of His Law is His gracious provision: Life for life. Here again is a fundamental principle of the Good News—all have sinned and are guilty. God has pronounced judgment on all, making no distinction between Jew and Gentile. The wages of sin is death. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son” (Zechariah 12:10).

2. The White House and the U.S. State Department have ordered federal government offices to scrub Israel from Jerusalem. 3. The Muslim Brotherhood deputy head, Rashad Bayoumi, told the Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat that the Muslim Brotherhood would not recognize Israel and will work to cancel the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

7. Jewish financier George Soros has a plot to collapse the Netanyahu government through funding the J Street lobby and anti-Israel NGOs (non-governmental organizations). 8. The European Union said in December that Israel has no legitimate claim to the land of Judea and Samaria. 9. The Vatican, the World Council of Churches, and the National Council of Churches continue to call on Obama and the world community to pressure Israel to leave Arab land.

Areas for Prayer Israel is facing the most dangerous time in history because of the following: 1. Hillary Clinton called Israeli settlements “illegitimate” shortly before the United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning continued Israeli settlement expansion as illegal.

4. There has been fallout from the harsh rhetoric of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and fanatical Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad—whose country is determined to develop a nuclear weapon. 5. Some of Israel’s worst enemies are secular leftist Jews in media and politics in Israel and in the media in the United States. 6. There is an ever-increasing international attempt— headquartered in London, England—to delegitimize Israel.

We must follow Psalm 122:6 by continuing to pray for the salvation of the people of Israel and for the peace of Jerusalem. I

t was a hot summer night in Arizona, which means you stay indoors and watch TV. Going outside would be an exercise in futility, in this, the only U.S. state where your car overheats even before you start it up! It was on such a night that I was watching a Christian TV show, and the televangelists expressed excitement over discovering that the roots of their faith were, amazingly, Jewish. At one point, as they spoke in depth about the prayer shawl, they took what must have been about 20 of those shawls, placed them on the stage floor, and wiped or “waved” the floor with them as a “holy ritual” unto the Lord. I wonder if they even considered what Jewish People would think if they were watching this. I will tell you. Many Jewish People would have been offended by seeing what they deem a sacred garment being unfurled on a floor where people walk. While the Church today is beginning to explore the Jewish roots, it has not yet also fully come to recognize the importance of sharing the Good News with the very people who gave them those roots in the first place—the Jews. There are a number of reasons for this.


1. Jews need Yeshua; who knew?

There are two popular schools of thought—either the Jews are God’s Chosen People who therefore don’t need Yeshua to receive salvation, or the Jews are God’s cursed people who therefore don’t merit salvation. The Bible discredits both heresies, as Yeshua tells us in John 14:6 that no one comes to the Father except through Him.

2. Share the Good News with Jewish People; but how?

In a recent conversation I had with a pastor of a large church, he echoed the sentiments of many church leaders I’ve spoken with on this subject. They know that Jewish People need Yeshua just like everyone else, but they also know that Jewish People oftentimes need to hear the Gospel presentation from an Old Testament perspective, and they’re not entirely sure how to do that, because no one’s ever come to teach them and their congregation how to go about it. 3. There’s a price to pay for excess baggage.

And it doesn’t only apply to the airlines, folks. Let’s be honest: 2,000 years of anti-Jewish sentiment on the part of the Church hasn’t done much for the cause of bringing Jewish People to Yeshua. I applaud the ever-increasing numbers of churches that are trying to heal the wounds of the past and that make it a point to convey the fact that those who were responsible for Jewish persecution do not fit the definition of a Christian in the first place. But reversing the trend takes time.

4. Jews? What Jews?

I always enjoy sharing the story of a time several years back when I was speaking in a rural town in Washington State, and a well-meaning Christian woman came up to me and asked if I were Jewish. When I replied, “yes,” she said, “Can I touch you?” After pondering this for about five seconds, I said, “I have two questions for you: First, why? . . . and second, where?” It was the first time in her life that she had ever met a Jewish Person! Considering that the vast majority of communities have little or no Jewish population, churches may not see the relevance of trying to reach a people group who don’t even have a presence in their local area. But think about this: Do you notice how there are many churches that post photos of their missionaries who are serving different people groups in different parts of the world? Most of those people groups are not in the church’s immediate community either, yet the church has correctly deduced that those people are in need of hearing the Good News proclaimed. Indeed, when we take a broader look at the Great Commission, we see that Yeshua encouraged His

disciples not only to share the message of salvation within their own communities, but to also go out into all the world to do so.

5. Evangelism? Hey, we got that!

From a reading of Romans 9:1-3, one thing you notice is how ironic it is that the only group Paul mentioned specifically by name as being in the most desperate need of evangelism is the only group that churches somehow manage to avoid evangelizing. Thankfully, there are the exceptions—I’d like to express my profound gratitude here to those denominations who see the need to develop evangelism programs to all people, and that includes the Jews. One such denomination that comes to mind is the Anglican Church of North America. This denomination has made it a priority to share the Good News with Jewish People. They understand that since the Word of God is the same yesterday, today, and always, when God said yesterday He would bless those who bless Israel, the greatest way to bless Israel and her people is by sharing the message of eternal life with Jewish People. If you think the Anglican Church’s idea is a new concept, think again. I leave you with the words of Arthur Glasser, Dean Emeritus of Fuller Seminary, one of the foremost centers of Christian education in the world. He got it. He recognized that the need to share the Good News with Jewish People is a necessary mandate to all of God’s people, as you will read in the following quote: We wish to charge the Church, as a whole, to do more than merely include the Jewish people in their evangelistic outreach. We would encourage an active response to the mandate of Romans 1:16 calling for evangelism “to the Jew first.” For this we have the precedent of a great Jewish missionary, the Apostle Paul. Though sent to the Gentile world, he never relinquished his burden for his own kinsmen after the flesh. Wherever he traveled, he first visited the synagogue before presenting Christ to the Gentiles. So it must be in every generation. We must provide a priority opportunity for our Jewish friends to respond to the Messiah . . . . More; we feel it incumbent on Christians in all traditions to reinstate the work of Jewish evangelism in their missionary obedience. Jewish-oriented programs should be developed. Appropriate agencies for Jewish evangelism should be formed. And churches everywhere should support those existing institutions which are faithfully and lovingly bearing a Christian witness to the Jewish people. Supersessionism! F

irst century Messianic Jewish relations with both the Jewish and new Gentile Christian communities were soundly established upon the obvious realization that New Covenant Messianic faith was divinely poured forth through a Jewish vessel. The Messianic/Christian debt to Hebrew Scripture, Jewish exegesis, and divine revelation were evident to all Believers. In fact, Jewish-Christian relations, in spite of second and third century Christian elitist assaults upon all things Jewish, continued with good rhythm and solid relationship till late in the fourth century. But the “beginning of the end” of the conviction that Jewish and Christian camps had been birthed from a common spiritual fount took on catastrophic setback from the second century. Students of the history of interfaith relations between Jews and Christians will recall that Justin Martyr crafted his “Dialogue with Trypho the Jew” on the heels of the Bar Kochba uprising in Roman Palestine in 135 C.E. The “Dialogue” was finally published in 150 C.E. some 15 years before Justin’s martyrdom. Here Justin made his strong case for a “New Israel,” a “True Israel,” in replacement of biblical Israel.

Although we find traces of potential insipient warnings against “replacement theology” (Supersessionism) in the Book of Romans, it seems Paul attacks it at its roots and eradicates the problem at least in Rome until well into the second century. But from Justin’s time and forward, an increasingly hostile Christian disposition developed toward not only the Jewish People, the God of the Hebrew Bible (the demiurge), and Jewish cultural expression of any variety, but even Christian antagonism toward the Torah itself. The Hebrew Bible was the only sound historical and theological foundation for Christianity as Paul makes plain. Yet an anti-Hebrew Bible sentiment was deliberately fostered by Marcion, a brilliant businessman and the son of a Christian bishop who chose to castigate all things Jewish on principle. He contended that the New Testament was a revelation of the real God and Father of Yeshua, the loving God of spirit and grace, as opposed to the Jewish God of the Hebrew Bible, a lesser and hateful deity who was quite willing to preoccupy Himself with material creation. Anything associated with Jewish earthly concerns and life on the planet was considered vastly inferior to all things spiritual and heavenly. Jews, Jewish

religion and culture, even Jewish natural affinity with the Promised Land and patriotism were regarded as carnal, this worldly, inferior, and “Jewish.” Unfortunately, while Marcion and his Gnostic-informed condemnation of the Hebrew Bible was considered heretical and he himself and his doctrines were condemned by church authorities, many Christians and Christian leaders have been seriously impacted by this anti-Hebrew Bible, anti-Jewish practice, and anti-Torah sentiment. Scholars and preachers guilty of iso-gesis (reading things INTO the Scripture that are not there) over the centuries have

(Continued from page 11) demonstrates the love and reverence the Puritans had for Jewish history. In contrast to Jews’ historical relationship to Catholic Europe, this was a seismic shift. Building on this foundation, Constitutional framers like Thomas Jefferson fought and won the battle to separate the State from the Church. The effect was a new right—a right to the freedom of religion from the tyranny practiced in the preceding centuries in Europe. The net effect, for the Jewish People, was more freedom and prosperity than they had ever known in Europe. This is not to suggest that America was free from its own unique forms of anti-Semitism. However, in contrast to the centuries of a perfected art of European anti-Semitism, this was the “new” Promised Land for Jewish People.

The Evangelicals and the Jewish People Over the past 30 years, I have had the privilege of traveling to Israel some 68 times. Many of these trips were for the filming of various projects. As a result of the airing of some of our programs on the BBC, Fox Television, and distributed to the PBS audiences, I have been asked to speak to Jewish groups. One such event took place several years ago in the uber-wealthy community of Brentwood, California. I was there to address a group of several hundred Jewish leaders. In the Q & A session following my lecture, I was asked the quintessential pejorative question, from a Jewish perspective: “Do the Evangelicals support Israel just so they can convert them to Christianity?” Needless to say, I took a long and deep breath. I fully understood the implication behind the question. Furthermore, I knew from my years of building deep friendships with American Jews and

Israelis that the Jewish People did not differentiate between Catholic and Protestant. Catholics, and every stripe of the Protestant Reformation, were collectively responsible for the sum of all forms of anti-Semitism of the past 17 centuries.

teaching of St. Paul. This acceptance of Jews, and the teachings of the Old Testament as central to Evangelical theology, is a direct result of the English Reformation and right for common men to read the entire Bible, Old and New, in English.

After several long moments, as I studied the faces in the audience, I decided to answer the question with a question. “Allow me to ask you this: As the Jewish People, you have faced down bloodthirsty tyrants like Haman. You have survived the savagery of the Czars and Cossacks. You found a way to live through and survive the greatest threat to the Jews in all of history by outliving the demonic hatred of Hitler and his minions . . . Now, tell me this: If some little old lady from Alabama comes up to you and tells you that Jesus loves you, in a Southern drawl, are you going to be intimidated and offended that she has attempted to proselytize you? In my opinion, you are well educated, well traveled, and an extraordinarily sophisticated people, and for that matter, tough enough to deal with the words ‘Jesus loves you.’ You said no to Hitler, you said no to the Czars. My sense is that if some kindhearted Christian goes out of his way to share the Gospel, you can say no, as well.”

At the end of the day, Evangelicals welcome all the peoples of the earth, along with Jews, to follow the Messiah. They do not discriminate by race. Furthermore, when it comes to Israel, Evangelicals have not and will not make their support conditioned upon the Jews accepting Jesus as Messiah. From an Evangelical perspective, Israel is the result of a divine and unconditional promise to Abraham and cannot be broken. To put a fine point on it, the Jews of the Old Testament period and the Jews of the 21st century are the Chosen People.

After several seconds of quiet tension, the audience broke into laughter and applause. As I have told countless Jews in my various public appearances and one on one, the Evangelicals support Israel and the Jewish People because of their deep reverence for the Bible. They take the Bible literally as the Word of God. Thus, Christians are commanded to “bless” the Jews. Additionally, Evangelicals, unlike the Catholics of the third century, have no desire to displace the “Elder Brother.” In fact, they wholeheartedly embrace the “Elder Brother” and the teaching that Christianity is a mere branch grafted into the Jewish Olive Tree, per the

Never in all of recorded history has there been an event more clearly prophesied nor literally fulfilled than the restoration of the Jews to the same piece of geographic real estate from which they had been evicted—not once, but twice. For twenty-five centuries, the prophecies were locked away in a sort of “box” by divine decree. Israel is the key that unlocks the box. When the Prophet Daniel was shown his vision of events concerning the Antichrist and the Last Days, Daniel was stunned at what he saw: “I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, ‘My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?’ He replied, ‘Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end’” (Daniel 12:8-9). Israel's national redemption process began with its national restoration. It is a process that continues until the fulfillment of Zechariah 12:10 at His Second Advent. “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.”
