I cannot emphasize strongly enough how Jewish the New Testament really is, and that’s why we’ve dedicated this issue of Jewish Voice Today to a central theme that may be contrary to today’s worldview, but facts are facts: Jesus was a Jew, and He is identified in the Old Testament as well as the New. During His life on earth, this Jewish man taught forcefully and with compassion about the nature and character of the God of Israel, the Kingdom of God, and God’s requirements for mankind. ost Jewish People and Christians alike have erroneously concluded that Yeshua (Jesus) doesn’t make His appearance in history until New Testament times. And because of this staunchly held belief, two things inevitably have happened. First, most Jews are waiting for Messiah to come; somehow God’s plan of salvation has been completely bypassed. If only they knew that their Messiah reigns in their Jewish Scriptures, what many of us know as the Old Testament. What a difference that could make to their eternal salvation! Second, God’s plan for redemption and His faithfulness to bring us eternal life loses its richness for those Christians who lack the understanding that Scripture points to Yeshua even from the very beginning of time. Types and Shadows of in the Old and New Covenants

he biblical symbolism of the Jewish Messiah and Redeemer of the world has been a mystery to mankind, but there is good news because God has given us the keys to understanding the things that are hidden (1 Corinthians 4:1). Revelation is reserved for those who have ears to hear and eyes to see what is concealed in the shadows that form the likeness of Yeshua ( Jesus). That privilege is given to the body of Messiah, and the time for these secrets to be unlocked is now (Roman 16:25-27). We are stewards of the mysteries of Messiah so we can co-labor together to hasten His return.

seed and the nations. He has always existed and was with God the Father before the foundation of the universe ( John 1:2). It is God’s glory to conceal and mankind’s glory to uncover, so it is our job to fit pieces together to discover the Son of Man’s likeness. Yeshua’s image is seen in the form of the Angel of the Lord (Genesis 22:15; Exodus 3:2) and King Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18-20). His shadow is evident in the fire by night and the cloud by day (Deuteronomy 1:33) as the Israelites wandered through the wilderness. He is the Temple not built with hands (Matthew 12:6; Mark 14:58), and His attributes appear in the articles of worship within God’s special place in the outer and inner courts and the Holy of Holies (Exodus 25:31-40; John 8:12).

Yeshua

The name in Hebrew means “salvation”or“God saves”and is mentioned more than 152 times in the Old Covenant. Born in Bethlehem, meaning “House of Bread” in Hebrew, Yeshua is seen in the symbol of the tallit, or Jewish prayer shawl (Numbers 15:37-40), representing the commandments of the Torah and a life consecrated to God. The Jewish Messiah became God’s Word in human form ( John 1:1-3). Yeshua fulfilled all the Law and commandments by His life offered to the will of the Father and for the love of mankind (Matthew 5:17). The name Yeshua in Hebrew means “salvation” or “God saves” and is mentioned more than 152 times in the Old Covenant. Paul even referred to the Tanakh when he taught about Yeshua: “They [the leaders of the Jews] arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger

numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God, and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets he tried to persuade them about Jesus” (Acts 28:23). Hebrews 10:1 is a very profound statement: “The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming— not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.” In Jewish culture, there are two moadim, or “appointed days,” of the Lord that I believe are the two greatest shadows of that which was to come. Passover is the first, from Exodus 12. As the story of deliverance evolves, the Egyptian Pharaoh refuses to release the Israelites to Moses and endures nine horrible plagues. The tenth plague brings the Angel of Death into the country; and as he passes, the first-born children die unless there is lamb’s blood on the doorposts of each home—both Israelite and Egyptian. Miraculously, the Israelites’ children were saved because they killed a lamb according to the instructions of Moses and swabbed the blood over the doors

to protect them. The lamb chosen and sacrificed was an animal without spot or blemish. It was roasted and eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. This was the landmark event for Israel and a shadow of the Gospel, the Good News. That lamb foreshadowed the spotless Lamb of God, Who without sin, carried in His body the transgressions of the whole world to a hill called Golgotha (Isaiah 53:5). This selfless act became the watershed event for all mankind. The other significant appointed time (mo'ed) I want to discuss is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. During this annual event, the priest represented the people before the Lord. Two goats were used. One was sacrificed for forgiveness; the other was used as a substitute for the sins of the people placed on it by the priest and released into the wilderness. The blameless animal became the scapegoat for the people’s righteousness. This Jewish holiday foreshadowed the forgiveness we receive from the atoning work of Messiah upon the cross (Leviticus 23:27-36). Passover and Yom Kippur stand as the bookends of the Lord’s prophetic Voice and foreshadowing through symbols and events seen in Scripture. That which falls between these bookends points to the Son of Man, Yeshua, Who is the “radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being” (Hebrews 1:3).

Rabbinical tradition says that the Law was given during Shavuot, which represents the Holy Spirit filling those who waited in Jerusalem with power and boldness. And through the Holy Spirit, the Law is written upon our hearts when we believe in Him and confess that He is Lord. Lastly, there are three fall feasts: Feast of Trumpets, or Rosh Hashanah—a picture of Yeshua returning to earth for those who believe. Then Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement. And then Tabernacles, or Sukkot, the time when God’s government will reign under the leadership of Messiah over the earth. The concept of Israel as a Bride is not new. The book of Hosea illustrates the story of sacrificial love that can only point to the one true Redeemer of mankind—Yeshua, unwaveringly faithful to His people.

Hosea demonstrates His enduring commitment to his bride Gomer by wooing her back—a picture of God’s covenant with Israel—although she’s become a prostitute and stained with sins of idolatry. Yeshua is woven through the entire fabric of the Bible, yet there is coming a day when all of Israel will mourn Him. They’ll regret that they didn’t recognize the shadow that testified and is testifying to the presence of God, in the form of Yeshua. “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and of supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son” (Zechariah 12:10).

Other examples of the foreshadowing of Yeshua emerge in each of the Jewish holidays. After Passover comes First Fruits, when Yeshua fulfills the first fruits of life from the dead. Fifty days later, the Holy Spirit is poured out. Then another shadow, Shavuot or Pentecost (the wheat harvest feast), points to the harvest of lost souls. Jewish Voice Today

The Torah Prophesied

In Matthew 11:13, Jesus made this profound, yet enigmatic statement: “All the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John” (NIV). Luke’s version of this declaration expanded what Jesus meant: “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the gospel of the kingdom of God had been preached” (Luke 16:16, NASB). The question that leaps off this page of Scripture is this, How did “the Law” prophesy? It is quite easy to understand how “the Prophets” prophesied, but how is it possible that “The Law” prophesied?

The Sacred Texts

irst of all, it is essential to understand the subdivisions of the Hebrew Scriptures that were already in place within the Jewish community by the time of Yeshua and probably as early as 200 B.C. The Bible of the Jews was described as the TaNaKh, with the three letters of that Hebrew word serving as an acronym: T for Torah or “Law,” N for Nevi'im or “Prophets,” and K for Ketuvim or “Writings.” The Torah was the five books of Moses. The Nevi‘im were the writings of the prophets. The Ketuvim began with the book of Psalms and included all of the hagiography, the sacred historical and poetic texts. Jesus demonstrated His understanding of the three parts of the Hebrew Scriptures when He

reminded the two disciples who walked with Him on the road to Emmaus following His resurrection that “everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets, and in the Psalms was destined to be fulfilled.” Then, using the biblical principle that “in the mouth of two or three witnesses, everything is established” (Deuteronomy 17:6; Matthew 18:16), He “opened their minds that they might comprehend the Scriptures” (Luke 24:44, NJB; 24:45, NKJV). Jesus’ use of this teaching methodology proved that He maintained continuity with the rest of His fellow Jews by using the three parts of the TaNaKh to substantiate His teachings. In this conversation, He made it clear that not only did the Torah and the Prophets prophesy of Him, but also the rest of the writings of the Hebrew Scriptures had been written to reveal Him.

The Dynamics of Messianic Prophecy

Prophetic Pictures of the Messiah

There is a scarlet thread that is woven into the very fabric of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. This is the ever-unfolding story of the Messiah who was to redeem the entire world from slavery to sin and to establish the dominion of God in a kingdom of universal shalom (the peace of God). Messianism, then, is at the very heart of Scripture. The very first promise in the Bible, the protoevangelium, is a Messianic prophecy in which God declared that Eve’s son would crush the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15). The very last promise in the Bible is also a Messianic prophecy wherein Jesus says to John, “The one who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon’” (Revelation 22:20, NRSV).

While the prophets were prolific in their predictions about the Messiah, the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures also prophesied of the coming Son of Man through the circumstances and events that transpired in the lives of God’s chosen people. The lives of the people were also prophetic. The Torah prophesied because it was a “shadow of good things to come” (Hebrews 10:1), though it “was not the very image” of what was coming. It presented pictures of what would happen. Its people and events were “shadows of things to come,” but “the reality is found in Christ” (Colossians 2:17, NJB). Under this predictive principle, the entire Tabernacle contained pictures of the Messiah in type and shadow, simile and metaphor, parable and allegory, as is demonstrated throughout the book of Hebrews. The Sabbath and all of God’s festivals (Leviticus 23) were also prophetic of the Messiah (Colossians 2:17). Likewise, the lives and ministries of Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15; Acts 3:22), Joshua (Hebrews 4:8), David (Psalm 22:16), Solomon (Matthew 12:42), and Zerubbabel (Haggai 2:3; Zechariah 4:6-10) also contained elements that prophesied of the Messiah.

Scores of Messianic prophecies are crystal clear because “prophets spoke as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21, NIV). These include such prophecies as “A virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14), “Unto us a child is born . . . and he shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6, NASB), “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5), and “Bethlehem Ephrathah . . . out of you will come for me the one who will be ruler over Israel” (Micah 5:2).

Discovering Ye Atoning Work Throughout the Bible Do you want to know a secret? No, I’m not talking about the Beatles’ song of the same name. I’m talking about a real, honest-to-goodness, bona fide secret. Ready? Okay, here goes: Yeshua’s existence did not begin in Matthew.

hocked? You shouldn’t be. In fact, He’s from the first word of the first chapter of the first book of Scripture, to the last word of the last chapter of the last book. And there is, perhaps, no better season to take note of that than right now. As we journey through the annual biblical festival cycle, we’re reminded of some wonderful parallels between the Old and New Testaments, and in particular, those of Passover and the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur.

Thanks not so much to the Bible but more so to Cecil B. DeMille, millions will continue to attribute the story of the Israelites' exodus from Egypt to none other than that great biblical figure Charlton Heston, who (aided by

God Himself, who played the starring role) parted the Sea of Reeds as Israel crossed over on dry ground. It was, however, a fact that their redemption came because an innocent, spotless, and blameless lamb was slain, and its blood smeared on the lintels and doorposts of Israelite homes. In the tenth and final plague God brought upon Egypt, this one act spared the Israelites from death. And that should come as no surprise, considering that Leviticus 17:11 tells us that the life of the flesh is in the blood, and that it is the blood that atones for the soul. And it shouldn’t go without notice that when you smear blood on a lintel and a doorpost, somewhere along the way, you’re making the shape of a cross, upon which another lamb, this

time the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the World, gave His own life for us on a similar Passover day nearly 2,000 years later. So, Passover is not simply a festival that recognizes that no matter what you do with it, matzah still tastes like cardboard—it is much more than that—it is a reminder that blood shed from a sacrifice spares our very lives and gives us the promise of redemption. When you come to understand that, you never read Psalm 22 the same way again. A well-known Messianic prophecy, the Psalm describes the act of a crucifixion in marked detail, at a time when crucifixion would be non-existent for another 900 years. Of particular note are verses 14-18:

“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.”

His blood shed on that executioner’s stake is just the first part of the redemption story. The idea of blood atonement goes further, connecting this spring feast of Passover (which has been fulfilled) to the fall feast of Yom Kippur, which has yet to be fulfilled. The imagery of Yom Kippur is quite similar—in ancient times, blood was required from a sacrifice as the vehicle to lead one to redemption from sin. And just as Yeshua was the fulfillment of the lamb’s blood leading to Israelite redemption at the first Passover, He too is the fulfillment of the blood of sacrificial animals, and is the only way possible for us to be redeemed and spared eternal death today. And the prophetic timeline couldn’t be clearer: In Zechariah 12:10 we’re told, “They shall look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.” I mentioned earlier that Yom Kippur has yet to be fulfilled. It will be an exciting event to look forward to, because it will mark Yeshua’s return, and with that, the fulfillment as well of His words in Matthew 23:39, “For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” And on that great day, friends, eyes will be opened, and the knowledge of where one’s true atonement comes will be revealed. Yeshua and the T

he Shema is the central prayer in the Jewish prayer book. It is generally one of the first prayers a Jewish child learns. The Shema defines what it means to be Jewish as it has since the days of Moses: Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad—“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4).

It is upon this central truth that Judaism was founded as the world's first uniquely monotheistic faith, surrounded as it was by a world of polytheistic paganism. The Bible declares emphatically that “there is no God besides Me” (Deuteronomy 32:39), “I am the LORD and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:18), together with similarly strong declarations in Isaiah 43:10, Isaiah 46:10, Exodus 3:14, and elsewhere.

Just as the Shema is the bedrock doctrine of Judaism, this truth is the bedrock doctrine of Christianity; "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). So to someone born into a Jewish family and then raised in the Jewish faith, the Christian understanding of the Trinity is pagan polytheism, as is the Christian understanding of Yeshua as both Son of God and God the Son. To a Jew, this sounds like another god, a different god than the God of the Shema. So to him, a call to follow Yeshua is a call to be unfaithful to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And if God has a Son, why didn't He mention Him in the Old Testament? As a matter of fact, He did. Read Psalm 2:12: “Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” Of Whom do you think the Psalmist is referring when he speaks of the “Son”? Among the Bible's unmistakeably monotheistic declarations are a number of perplexing assertions of plurality. It is perplexing because the Bible is most definite that there is only one God, but there is just as definitely a plurality about His Person. Of all the other names Moses might have made use of for God, he used Elohim, a plural invariably translated “us” as in Genesis 1:26—“Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness . . .” or Genesis 11:7—“Let us go down and confuse their language . . .” Moses had other, singular Names he could have chosen for God besides Elohim, but Moses used the plural form because it was the one that God inspired him to use. Other plural terms used for God in the Old Testament include panim (equivalent to the Greek prosopa, for “faces,”

“persons,” or “presence”), which is found in Exodus 33:14-15, Psalm 27:8-9, and Deuteronomy 4:37. The literal Hebrew for “Maker” in Job 35:10, Psalm 149:2, and Isaiah 54:5 is the plural, “Makers.” For “Creator” in Ecclesiastes 12:1, the literal Hebrew is “Creators.” The Bible teaches that no man has ever seen God or can ever see God, yet there are numerous references to visible appearances of God in the Old Testament. Some of these are clear references to the Son of God, as in Daniel 3:25. The King had ordered three men thrown into the furnace, but the captain of the guard reported there were four walking unhurt in the midst of the flames. “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God” (NKJV). That the Son is also the eternal God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is demonstrated by the fact that He allows Himself to be worshipped—blasphemy for anyone else except God. There were also the three men that appeared to Abraham. Two were angels, but one the Bible refers to repeatedly as “the Lord.” Joshua 5:13-15 records a nearconfrontation between Joshua and a man that stood before him holding a drawn sword. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” The Bible says that Joshua threw himself down before the man and worshipped and was instructed to take off his sandals, for the place where he now stood was holy ground.

This cannot be just an angel. Angels cannot accept worship. The commander of the Lord's Army is, in fact, the Lord Himself, since only the Lord can accept worship. The “Angel of the Lord” in Genesis 16:7, 13, Genesis 22:11-12, and Exodus 3:2-6 are similar examples of the pre-incarnate Redeemer that later stepped out of space and time to be born, fully God and fully man, to a Jewish virgin in Bethlehem. According to John 1:1-3, He was Yeshua of Nazareth, and simultaneously, God the Son, present at Creation and without Whom “nothing was made that has been made.” The Father and the Son are one God, but at the same time, two distinct Persons. Colossians 1:15 explains it this way: “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn over all Creation.” Just as the Shema is the bedrock doctrine of Judaism, this truth is the bedrock doctrine of Christianity; “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Only as God the Son could He be our Redeemer—unless God Himself redeems us, we cannot be redeemed. The law of God demands perfect obedience to the Law—Yeshua is the only One who ever lived who fulfilled that demand. The law demands just punishment for those who sin—He fulfilled that demand as well. The law has been upheld. It is satisfied. To deny the Son is to deny the Father Who promised our redemption: “if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins” ( John 8:24). Taking a Stand for G I

attended this year’s National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Once again, Israel had a big presence at the convention, which they have had since the 1980s. When you walk in the huge Exhibit Hall each year, the first booth you see is Israel’s Ministry of Tourism. The NRB leaders’ support of Israel has been very strong, but they haven’t taken a position on the Promised Land or the ongoing peace talks over Judea and Samaria due to political positions both in Israel and in the United States. The White House and Congress support a “two-state plan”—but only with guarantees of peace and security. Israel’s government supports a “two-state plan” with the same peace and security mandate. Last year, Israel’s Department of Tourism took the NRB’s Executive Committee to Israel. They had a very informative trip and were treated to the best of Israeli hospitality. We need to pray that one day soon the leaders of the National Religious Broadcasters would be interested in tours of Judea, Samaria, and East Jerusalem so they can fully understand the biblical and strategic importance of the Promised Land. In the meantime, we must continue to make bold public statements about the Promised Land of Israel so the world

will fully know the biblical importance of God’s plan and His commitment to Israel and the Jewish People. This is a great opportunity for all of us, since major Jewish and Christian organizations are reluctant to take a stand that could create political tidal waves inside and outside of Israel. Additionally, there is reluctance by Christian organizations to take a strong biblical stand for Israel’s Land. But we need to counter that repeatedly in all venues—radio, TV, newspapers, and online—by stating what the Bible says. We must repeatedly state the truth of Israel’s right to her Land— that it is not to be divided, and that there will continue to be consequences to those who try to divide it. We need to emphasize that Israel has been under intense pressure from the international community, which has forced them into their positions on Judea and Samaria. Moreover, some in the Church are fearful that showing interest in Israel could jeopardize evangelism opportunities with Arabs in the 10-40 Window. But Arabs need to know God’s truth about Israel and His redemptive plan for them and their countries. One way or another, we need to state that the Land of Israel is theirs—and that God gave much land to the offspring of Ishmael, but not the Land intended for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their descendants.

Unfortunately, the Arab Spring, an Islamic takeover of the governments of the Middle East, has left Israel more vulnerable than ever before and has led to an unprecedented level of persecution of Christians throughout the Middle East. Franklin Graham recently emphasized the significant amount of Christian persecution throughout the Middle East and in Northern Africa and called on President Barack Obama to speak out on this very serious situation. He said Obama has been much more interested in promoting the Arab Spring than the persecution of Christians in the region. Today, many lives are at risk in Israel, the Middle East, and throughout the world, so we must seize the moment for the Lord in truth.

What the children of Yis’rael would find in Mitz’rayim, Ya’akov did not know. Would they be the ones God spoke to Av’raham (Abraham) about—the ones who would be oppressed and enslaved for generations to come? All Ya’akov knew was that his long-lost son Yosef was found in that foreign land, and that HaEl told him to have no fear—that it was “for a great nation [that] I set you there.”

In total shock and terror, the sons of Yis’rael (Israel) finally knew the truth: their brother Yosef ( Joseph) was not only alive—he was their master . . .

We may not always know in advance how God is going to get us to where He wants us to be. We may sometimes even see the place He’s taking us and be afraid of where we’re inevitably headed. But as surely as He is going down with us to the place we are afraid to go, we can be confident that He will remember His promises to us and deliver us from death once again.

Though the end had been revealed from the beginning, no one could have guessed the path they would take to get there. That the brothers of Yosef would leave him for dead only to later find their fate in his hands was unimaginable. But Yosef comforted and assured his brothers, “You have not sent me here, but God . . . .”



The idea that ADONAI would use the suffering of one man to redeem and preserve life for all is beyond our comprehension. Allowing an innocent person to endure pain for even a moment screams of injustice—the sadistic cruelty of a wrathful God. And yet, this is exactly what the Lord did through Yosef, whose trials and affliction were not merely permitted by God, but orchestrated by Him “to preserve life . . . and to give life . . . by a great escape.”

Lord God of Av’raham and Ya’akov, Redeemer of Yis’rael, I praise Your great Name. Who is like You, ADONAI, who plans the end from the beginning, and uses the anguish and pain of One to accomplish the salvation of all? I bless You, Father, for sending Your humble servant, Yeshua, to preserve and give life by a great escape. Thank You, Lord, for using me as You see fit—may my use in Your kingdom be as selfless and honorable as that of Your Son. The Deeper Meaning of Pentecost

even weeks after Firstfruits comes Pentecost, a feast that marked the end of the barley harvest and the beginning of the wheat harvest. In Hebrew this feast is called Shavuot, meaning “weeks.” In Greek the feast is named for the fifty days of counting after Firstfruits and is called Pentecost.

But what if the “house” spoken of in the passage above was not the upper room as many of us have imagined but the temple itself, commonly referred to in Scripture as the “house of God”? Shavuot is one of the three major festivals (along with Passover and Tabernacles) for which attendance is required at the temple. At nine in the morning, Jesus’ followers would have been in the temple along with Jewish pilgrims from a host of other countries who had come to celebrate the feast, all speaking various languages from the lands of their origin. So it is likely that the sound of a mighty rushing wind and the vision of tongues of fire described in Acts took place not in an upper room but in front of thousands of people within the temple precincts. It was here that Peter would have had the opportunity to preach to the multitudes about Jesus.

Welcome to the Future  H aving been called by God at the age of 14 to bring the Good News of Yeshua to the Jewish People, I was now ready to step into the fulfillment of that calling. (Continued from page 23) Jeremiah prophesied: “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah . . . “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbors, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” ( Jeremiah 31:31, 33-34) On Sinai, God had given his people the covenant of the Torah, meaning “law” or “instruction.” On Pentecost he gave his Spirit to seal a new covenant of the forgiveness of sin. Like the Torah, the Spirit reveals God’s truth, instructs us, and convicts us of sin. But unlike the Torah, the Spirit empowers us to live in communion with God by changing our hearts from within, something that the law could not do (Romans 8:5-7). What a reason to celebrate! But that’s not all, because on the morning of Shavuot, the priests would read aloud a remarkable passage from the book of Ezekiel. The first two chapters of Ezekiel recount his Technicolor vision of a windstorm replete with lightning and fire. Overcome with fear, Ezekiel fell facedown until God commanded him to stand and the Spirit came into him. In this vision, God commissioned Ezekiel to be his prophet, empowering him to take his divine word to his people. A remarkable similarity exists between Ezekiel’s vision and the disciples’ experience at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came with wind, fire, and the gift of tongues, enabling Jesus’ disciples to speak God’s word to Jews from many nations, regardless of any language barriers. At Pentecost Christ’s followers were being commissioned to take God’s message of salvation to his people. The effect was immediate. Peter turned around and preached boldly, and three thousand people became believers. Once again, we see that the traditions of Shavuot shed new light on the events in Acts 2. Without understanding the context in which they took place, such events may simply seem strange — ghostly winds, floating flames, and ecstatic utterances. The ancient imagery of the feast of Shavuot, or Pentecost, however, sheds light on the birth of the church. 26 JewishVoiceToday.org | May/June 2012

Think about how God was using the ancient feasts to communicate with his people. Many centuries before, on Passover, God had redeemed them from Egypt. Fifty days after their departure, God enacted his covenant on Mount Sinai to form Israel into a nation. The death and resurrection of Christ on Passover brought redemption to all who believe in him. And fifty days later, God poured out his Spirit to seal a new covenant for the forgiveness of sins. Believers were commissioned to make disciples of all nations and empowered by the same Spirit who spoke through the prophets of long ago. Just as Passover and Firstfruits illuminated the meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection, Shavuot communicated what God was accomplishing on the birthday of the church. Knowing more about the early Jewish church can also help us understand what the gift of the Holy Spirit means to our own lives. Being Spirit-filled in the first century involved more than speaking in tongues, sharing the gospel, and doing miraculous healings, impressive as these were. Acts 2:44-45 tells us that “all the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.” In Hard Sayings of the Bible, Peter Davids comments that the Spirit of God “freed people from the spirit of Mammon so that they gave whenever they saw a need, selling property and belongings if necessary. There was no compulsion, no requirement. It was simply a natural response to the presence of the Spirit of the generous God within them.” Today some of our churches emphasize spiritual gifts, others evangelism, and still others caring for the poor.
