Water is a transitory medium, able to carry people to and from their destinations, able to wash away masks, facades, preconceptions, and able to erode away sharp edges until all are equalized. Where the Ship of Fools had carried the mad away from society, the asylum had brought them back, but kept them in secondary, other spaces, while attempting to heal with hydrotherapy. This project combines the natatorium with a halfway house, and hopes to use water and its associated programs, not to heal, but to reintegrate the mentally ill back into society. There are three pools, the cold diving pool, the hot bath, and the warm lap pool. Upon entering the natatorium, the visitor first encounters the diving pool; the cold water acts as the threshold which grants passage to the rest of the building by the main circulation, which winds around the building, before eventually reaching the outdoor lap pool.

Decay is inevitable. Everything that is capable of experiencing time will also experience decomposition. This project is an examination of how architecture can be shaped by time and attempts to take the unattractive process of decay and use it to reveal something beautiful. The form of the bathroom is derived through studies of decay and decomposition. There are two parts to the bathroom; the exterior mass, which is meant to decay away, and the inner shell, which is revealed over time. The exterior face of the inner shell is covered in LEDs, and at night, the bathroom becomes a lantern, activating the space and creating a safer atmosphere. The necessary bathroom fixtures, like the toilet and sink, are incorporated directly into the shell and become part of the structure.

Creation myths are common throughout the world. As an inverse, the desruction myth has just as many interpretations. The “end of the world can occur at multiple scales, whether through economic collapse, interplanetary collision, or death of a loved one. This project is a manifestation of a particular social response to the concept of the apocalypse. The monastery is a self sufficient retreat from the rest of society, located next to the Charlottesville reservoir in the Shenandoah Mountains.

This project began with an analysis of the snail as precedent for compact, temporary, housing units. These indiviual pods were then aggregated to form a hotel located at a site next to the High Line. Manual methods of sketching, rendering, drafting, and modeling were employed.

The space of the bank is deteriorating. As banking moves into the digital realm, physical space and interactions become more and more obsolete. Preservation of this space can only be achieved by attaching the bank program to a thriving, site specific program. Long Island City is a major art hub, with institutions such as the Sculpture Center, 5Pointz, Noguchi Sculpture Museum, and MOMA PS1 all located nearby. This project attempts to mesh the bank program with gallery spaces for new, upcoming, artists. The building experiments with the concept of “coreless,“ in that the core is deconstructed and incorporated into thickened, structural, walls, which also serve to serperate program within the buidling. This project is in progress.
