THANK YOU FOR BEING THE START OF SOMETHING POWERFUL. Dear Friends, This note is a difficult one to write. On the one hand, I want to talk about the many accomplishments of the Federation this year. And I will. But everything that happened took place against a backdrop that created a challenging set of circumstances for our staff, our board, and certainly for me personally. After a year-and-a-half of balancing work and illness, the needs of the Jewish community against personal circumstances, Mark Goldstein, the Federation’s executive director for 16 years and my friend, died of cancer on October 11, 2018. His loss left a gaping hole in our Jewish community. But his leadership, mentorship and commitment to Jewish communal life endures. I am grateful to the staff and volunteers who took up the mantel to ensure that 2017-18 was a successful year for Federation. More successful than ever, in fact, as new project-based giving increased the donations that flowed into the Federation’s campaign. The community celebrated Israel’s 70th year in style, with a months-long series of events that culminated in a giant birthday party at the JCC. We sent our first group of women to Israel in partnership with the Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project, and that group continues to give back by becoming increasingly involved in our community. We celebrated an incredibly successful first year in the LIFE & LEGACY program, assuring Jewish tomorrows. It was all possible because of you. I want to thank you sincerely for being the start of something powerful. This community is made better every day because of your commitment and dedication to caring for the vulnerable and nurturing and sustaining Jewish life. I look forward to working with you in 2018-19. Sincerely,

Eva Levitt President 3

We are the hand that comforts the spirit that survived the unspeakable

HELPING EUROPEAN HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS IN NEED Oszkár, 94, vividly remembers his Budapest childhood. Passover seders with family, singing in the synagogue choir, studying at vocational school – and the Nazis storming in and destroying all of it. Though he had dreamed of one day becoming a bank officer, the new anti-Jewish legislation turned what should have been an attainable goal into an impossible fantasy. At 21, he was taken to two different labor camps, one run by a sadistic supervisor who forced each inmate to carry logs up a hill – logs so big each required two people to lift. Somehow he survived. Shortly after the war, Oszkár was fortunate to meet the love of his life, but since she passed away 20 years ago, he has lived alone in a small apartment in his hometown. His health declined in 2012 after a stroke left him with constant tremors, partial blindness and deafness, and limited mobility. But with Federation at his side, he’s never alone. Oszkár is one of the approximately 4,000 Nazi victims receiving life-saving assistance from Federation partner the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)’s Hungarian office. He depends on critical medical care and home supplies, while other Hungarian Holocaust survivors receive food packages, home care, medicines, visits from social workers and more.

OFFERING A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR OLDER ADULTS When Herb, 68, suddenly needed surgery for a serious heart condition, his sister, who lives in New Jersey, turned to Jewish Family Service for help. She was afraid that her brother would have a hard time managing in his home because, in addition to his heart condition, he was somewhat unsteady on his feet, depressed and socially isolated. The social worker first met Herb at a rehabilitation facility after surgery and talked to him about what he would require to return home independently. With the help of Federation, JFS was able to pay for a home health aide to come into Herb’s home two days a week for three months. The social worker set him up with an emergency call button in case he fell or had an accident. Since Herb was not driving, the social worker arranged for him to have volunteer drivers take him to medical appointments. She signed him up for Meals on Wheels. He also loved the special packages he received on Jewish holidays from JFS. When Herb started feeling better, he asked the JFS social worker to find a support group that he could attend to talk about his experiences. Herb expressed gratitude to his sister for reaching out to JFS.

We are the soup that warms the heart of someone in need 5

We are the dream that inspires the leaders as they shape the future

BUILDING A STRONGER JEWISH COMMUNITY “Growing up as a Jew in the capital of Christianity is not an easy thing. You always feel different. But you also feel a part of something.” For Shirel, Rome is not just history; it’s also her home. Jews have lived in the Eternal City for 21 centuries, through golden ages and ghettos, Fascism and freedom. But things are changing. And without ORT Liceo Renzo Levi — the city’s sole remaining Jewish high school, run by Federation partner World ORT — Rome’s Jewish future would be a lot less certain. Alumni of the Liceo Renzo Levi make up the heart of Rome’s 15,000-strong Jewish community. In fact, nearly every Jewish communal professional and lay leader in the city calls the school their alma mater. “Each time I go home, I find a new synagogue, new kosher restaurant, and more and more Jewish nonprofits,” says Shirel. “I think the school is playing an important role in this communal project.”

DEVELOPING LEADERS AND FORGING CONNECTIONS

A trip to Israel with the Jewish Federation kick-started a year of leadership training and community involvement for the participants of Israel Next Dor in 2017-18. The group participated in monthly programs and took the lead at the Federation’s Super Sunday mitzvah day. The twelve participants graduated from the program at the Federation’s Community Celebration & Annual Meeting in June and continue to bring their leadership and enthusiasm to the Lehigh Valley community.

A Year at Federation

SECURITY CONFERENCE BRINGS FAITHS TOGETHER

DISASTER RELIEF

In the early fall, Federation was at the ready when major hurricanes struck Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico and earthquakes shook Mexico City. Because of our comprehensive network of partners and ongoing support from our Annual Campaign, we were able to quickly raise funds and distribute them directly to where they were needed the most.

SUPPORT FOR VENEZUELA

Community members Israel and Valeska Zighelboim shared their story at a program presented by our Community Relations Council in November about growing up in Venezuela and the dire needs of the Jewish community there today. Our community responded, quickly raising $17,000 to help with this effort. 16

In August, the Federation brought Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith leaders together with experts from the Department of Homeland Security to discuss how to be prepared in the event of an emergency.

SPOTLIGHT ON: CAROL BUB FROMER & GARY FROMER Annual Campaign Co-Chairs

What brought you to the Lehigh Valley?

CAROL: My family emigrated from South Africa to Allentown in 1977 because they favored a vibrant and active Jewish community. For Gary and I, the Lehigh Valley offered an intimate community that was attracting young Jewish families like us, with many dynamic Jewish organizations. How did you get involved in the Jewish community and how have you been involved since?

GARY: Within a year of moving here, our first child was born and was immediately immersed in the JCC’s Early Childhood Education program. Both of our children attended the Jewish Day School through eighth grade, where each of us has served as active board members. We’ve participated at Sons of Israel, at Beth El and at other synagogues in the area. Carol also recently served on the board of Jewish Family Service. We are very grateful for the variety of opportunities we‘ve had to participate in and to help guide our Jewish organizations. Why did you take on this role in the campaign?

GARY: I’ve served on the Allocations Committee for the last several years and chaired it the last two, so I’ve become intimately familiar with the needs of our agencies locally and those of our agencies serving the needs of Jews abroad. The Annual Campaign is the vehicle for us to provide for the JCC, the JDS and JFS as well as educational series at our synagogues, Jewish films, Israeli shlichim in the summer and much else. When I considered how much our community and Jews in need around the world depend on the Annual Campaign, it was a difficult request to turn down.

CAROL: As a member of the Federation board for many years, one can definitely appreciate a sense of change and transition. We have a lot of seasoned and very generous philanthropic families that are getting older and we welcome the challenge of trying to reignite the campaign, reinvigorate our volunteers and engage our younger generations. 19

The second, called “Donor Advised Funds,” allow donors to make use of liberal distribution policies, including quarterly distributions. LIFE & LEGACY DONOR SPOTLIGHT

ARTHUR & BARBARA WEINRACH Through LIFE & LEGACY, a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation to promote after-lifetime giving brought to the Lehigh Valley by the Jewish Federation, Arthur and Barbara Weinrach have been able to support four community organizations that are meaningful to them. One of these organizations is the Federation itself.

“We believe that a wonderful legacy would be to help fund our community’s endowment. Federation serves us and others by making it unnecessary for donors to spend precious time as an individual allocations committee. Federation provides worthwhile programming to the Jewish community and outreach to the general community. We can think of nothing more worthwhile than endowing our annual pledge in perpetuity.”
