D-School This project challenged us to find a problem that our partner has related to gift giving. First we had to get to know our partner and identify a problem that they have. After we had to come up with multiple solutions for them and in the end we created one of our solutions. For me, the pace of this project seemed very rushed. Normally, I take my time with projects so this was very chaotic. I think it is important to have a quick rough draft and then after you can go back and make changes at a slower pace. If I could go back and pick up where I left off, I would definitely add more details to my prototype. It was hard to create something in such short time. When time was up I had to expain to my partner what I meant for it to look like which is frustrating to me because it was unfinished. Engaging with my partner helped me to further my direction of my prototype. I think it is important to bounce ideas off of peers because everyone has their own thought processes so you could learn new things by talking with other people.

In-Process Work For the in-process work, I was trying to come up with a way to help my partner solve their problem when it comes to gift giving. Some of my ideas did not seem plausable. For example, I said that my partner needs to spend more time on his giftwrapping which sometimes is not possible. 3

Personally, I do not like showing someone my unfinished artwork because I feel that there are still things that I can improve. However, I think that it is good to show people unfinished work because then you can get input on it and make changes instead of showing someone your final product and then having to go back and change different aspects. If I would restart the whole project again, I would focus more on a specific idea instead of trying to combine multiple ideas, especially given only 10 minutes again. The goal of my final composition was to help my partner with gift-wrapping. So I created a box what would have all of the essentials of gift-wrapping like wrapping paper, tape and a scissors.

Dot Line

For this project, we were given a list of words from which we would create an image that would abstractly describe the word using dots and lines. At first, it was difficult for me to represent the words especially only using one dot and one line. But after moving the dots and lines around, it became easier. I think it was smart to create 5 thumbnails for each word and then pick the one that we liked best and then draw 5 more. Even though it seemed tedious, I felt that it was helpful to see it in different ways and then I could decide if I thought it represented the word better.

This project introduced the idea of Gestalt which to me is looking at the picture as a whole instead of seeing all of the individual parts that make up the piece.

There are ideas that make up Gestalt. For example, in every art piece, there is positive and negative space. Gestalt is used in this type of project because as a whole the piece represents the word and the relationship between the dots and lines can be described using the gestalt principles. I am a detailed person so it is not difficult for me to make a well-crafted object. Normally on projects, I take my time to make sure that it turns out how I want it to. Even though I think that some good ideas can come from thinking quickly, I think that some of the best ideas are well thought out which take more time. Because of this project, I look at things with a different perspective and I hope to use abstraction in my pieces because it is not very common and I like how it can be interpreted many different ways.

Letterforms For this project, we had to pick a word and handprint it in four different ways. We were required to create two that showcase proper kerning and being able to print in a straight line. The last two had to represent the word.

In-Process Work Before this project, I had no experience with printing. The project was a lot more work than I expected it to be but in the end it was worth all of the frustrating times. To me, I like when everything looks “perfect so it was irritating when the letters did not turn out how I wanted them to.

7

Physically printing the letter gave me an appreciation for printmakers and everything they do. Also, the way that the letters are placed, it can be interpreted many different ways. Also it is helpful to have many variations of the word because it allows you to easily narrow it down. If I could continue my project, I would like to portray my word better. I think I played it safe with my work and I should’ve taken more risks. I liked the feedback that I got because it made me think of different ways that I could have done it.

Hand Lettering

I think that art and design share characteritics. Design requires some sort of goal and objective. Anyone can learn design, but I feel in art, you have to be more creative and there is no distinct process. People are inspired to do art. Art is meant to create emotions and thoughts and design solves a problem.

9

If I had to pick between art and design, I would pick design because I like to have order and a process to the pieces that I am creating. I also find it interesting that anyone is capable of design which shows how simple it could be. However, sometimes I do feel inclined to create art because something inspires me.

10

Object Iterations For this project, we had to pick an object and display it using different modes. We also had to mimic the work of two professional artists. Once we had all of our images, we edited them on Adobe Photoshop and built a page on Adobe InDesign to display our creations.

Paul Klee

Before this class, I did not have any experience in Photoshop. Photoshop allows the ability to create your vision. I think in the future, I will consider using Photoshop or Indesign for other classes. From doing this project, I learned all of the different aspects of a llama. Throughout the whole process, I learned the importance of asking for others’ opinions and what they think could be improved.

Continuous Line

The geometric llama type was most difficult for me. It was hard for me to give the llama its features that distinguish it differently than a horse. After talking with others, I feel that I captured it better than my first attempt. Collage

Out of all of my media, I enjoyed creating my llama based on Banksy. Although it was challenging to make a stencil, I feel that my outcome was very successful and rewarding for how much work I put into it. If I could continue this for a year, I would spend more time on photoshop and also add more effects to them. I would also add a touch of color to make it seem more lifelike. However, for the purpose of this book, I decided to keep everything black and white to emphasize that in this class we only worked with black and white.

PSA Poster For this project, everyone was a client and a designer. As clients, we would give our designer the exact words that we wanted on the poster. The designers created drafts and then would ask the client what they liked and what should be changed. It was very challenging to me to only use type because I am used to seeing posters with images so it was difficult for me to make a poster that really emphasized the importance of the text. In my opnion, to indicate important text, it should be larger and bolder compared to the other text. I think that posters should be symmetrical and the negative space should not be irregular.

From this project, I learned how important it is to create different drafts. For this project, I created over 12 different posters but in each one there is just one element that is different. Also I found that printing the poster and critiquing really helps because the printed out version of it looks different than on your computer screen.

Designer Presentation For this project, we had to create a presentation about an artist and showcase their work. By doing this, it makes us more aware of artists and how they have impacted society. I went through all of the names on the list and I came across Jessica Walsh. Her work really intrigued me because of how it was so different and out of the box. Jessica did work for companies like Baboon and Frooti. She also created a cover for the New York Times that was about the women’s march. I really admire Jessica Walsh because she is determined to get her voice heard through her work. I am not a very good public speaker and I get nervous presenting in front of people which I feel is normal for most people. But as the presentation went on, I got more relaxed and realized that I knew what I was talking about.

I think that it is possible for everyone to have a good life. Whether it be doing something that you love or being around people that make you happy. However, there are certain factors that go into having a significant life. In my opinion, the choices that we make can heavily impact our life. It can clearly been seen that Jessica has a good and significant life. All of the decisions that she has made so far have gotten her to where she is today. It is important to rememeber that we can control our own fate. 16
